Euro 2024: Albania score fastest-ever Euros goal against Italy

DORTMUND -- Albania 's Nedim Bajrami scored the quickest goal in men's European Championship history when he opened the scoring after just 23 seconds against defending champions Italy on Saturday.

The match was being played at Borussia Dortmund's stadium, with Albania's supporters comfortably outnumbering their Italian counterparts.

With as many as 50,000 Albanians travelling to the Euros to support their country, the stadium erupted when Bajrami scored inside the opening minute.

Albania were underdogs for the match, but made a lightning-quick start as Bajrami pounced on an Italian error at the back. Federico Dimarco had a throw-in on the left side, and threw the ball back towards Alessandro Bastoni . But it was a tame throw-in, and Bajrami pounced and lashed the ball past Gianluigi Donnarumma .

Bajrami's strike broke the record set by Dmitri Kirichenko who scored after 1 minute 5 seconds for Russia against Greece in Euro 2004.

It was also Italy's earliest-ever goal conceded at a major tournament and their second 1st-minute goal at a major tournament, after Bernard Lacombe scored against them for France after 31 seconds in the 1978 World Cup.

Euro 2024: Spalletti praises Italy response after early scare

DORTMUND, Germany -- Italy manager Luciano Spalletti said his team "switched off" for Albania's record-setting early goal, but praised the way his team bounced back to get a 2-1 win in their Euro 2024 opener in Dortmund on Saturday.

Italy came into the match as defending champions, and Spalletti says his team must be far more clinical in front of goal if they are to repeat the feat, but also said his team are building their Euros defence off playing "good football." In the end, goals from Alessandro Bastoni and Nicolò Barella were enough to earn Italy the three points after an early scare.

Albania , buoyed by at least two-thirds of the support inside the stadium, made Euros history when Nedim Bajrami scored the quickest goal in tournament history after 23 seconds. The goal came off the back of an Italian error: Federico Dimarco took a throw-in on the left side, but Italy were slow to react, Bajrami pounced and powered an effort past Gianluigi Donnarumma .

"These things can happen because we switched off," Spalletti said in his post-match news conference. "But we need to appreciate the desire to try and go and play football even when the going got tough.

"We simply needed to keep things nice and tidy there, as we were boxed in."

Federico Chiesa said the intimidating atmosphere did not play a role in Italy starting slowly.

"From my vantage point on the pitch, there were fewer Italians and lots of Albanians but that's wonderful," Chiesa said. "It's nice to play 'away from home.' That didn't influence on us conceding the opening goal, that came from a throw-in, but we showed we wanted to keep the ball rather than launching it long."

Spalletti was delighted with the way his team responded, and how the team rallied around Dimarco. From there, Italy were dominant. Spalletti said he believed "the scoreline doesn't reflect the difference between the two teams" but also sounded a note of caution to his team after Albania's Rey Manaj went close to scoring a late equaliser.

"We have to improve -- we thought we were better than we were in certain situations," Spalletti said. "We need to be meaner -- we are neat and tidy in building things up -- but we need to hurt the opposition. We thought we were brilliant at keeping possession but that's something we need to do better."

Spalletti's Albania counterpart, Sylvinho, was hesitant to criticise his players for not holding their early lead against the champions from 2021.

"Yes, we could've managed it better, absolutely," he said. "But we mustn't forget that we were up against a very good team, Italy quickened the tempo a great deal. Italy moved the ball quickly.

"It's a shame we couldn't resist. It's not easy because they're a good side. If we hadn't conceded the second goal, then it'd been a good match for us. Unfortunately, we couldn't withstand Italy's attacks and it was a hard 25 minutes for us."

Spalletti praised Barella's showing, after the Inter Milan midfielder was an injury doubt heading into the match.

"I picked him even though he hasn't trained much as that's what he's about," he said. "If he drops deep and gets out of the congested areas, he's better. He keeps things ticking over in front of the defence in terms of quality. He gets us moving. He had a wonderful performance."

Spalletti said Italy will play in a different way when they face Spain next up, and Chiesa is anticipating a fierce task when the two meet on Thursday in Gelsenkirchen.

"It will be a great match, Spain showed tonight and in the past what a great side they are," Chiesa said. "We're no worse than they are. We'll go out there and compete for every ball. The head coach wants tough players who'll battle for every ball, as that's what we'll need to win the competition."

Albania, meanwhile, will look to pick up their first points against Croatia in Hamburg on Wednesday but admitted they were sorry for not giving their fans more to cheer in Dortmund.

"I was disappointed by the result," Sylvinho said. "When you prepare a match and come up against a team like Italy who are such a good side, we worked for 10 days straight to try and win this match, or get a draw.

"The crowd was incredible -- we said two days ago the stadium would be red, and I saw so many proud Albanians. It's a shame we weren't able to equalise in the final minute -- but these things happen."

7 tips for visiting bourbon distilleries and traveling the Kentucky Bourbon Trail

So you’ve caught the bourbon itch, and you’re eager to travel the Kentucky Bourbon Trail .

Cool — but so have hundreds of thousands of other people, too.

The Kentucky Distillers Association reported 2.55 million visits to Kentucky’s distilleries in 2023, and visitors came from 48 states, 20 countries, and six continents. Kentucky bourbon’s popularity has boomed over the past decade, and craft distilling and the tourism industry has blossomed alongside it. The demand means walk-in tours and tastings aren’t always available and reservations for lodging, experiences, and dining are often encouraged.

If you plan to travel the Kentucky Bourbon Trail , come prepared.

Ahead of the summer travel season, The Courier Journal reached out to tourism officials in Louisville, Bardstown and Frankfort to distill down just how far in advance you should hammer down your plans.

Is there a time of year when Kentucky Bourbon Trail is less busy?

The end of winter, generally, tends to be the least busy time to visit Kentucky, but in recent years, many distilleries have seen an uptick around the winter holiday season and even in January, February and early March.

When should you book a tour at a Kentucky bourbon distillery?

Tourism officials recommend booking tours at least a month in advance, but this largely depends on the distillery you want to go to. Distilleries individually release calendars for booking dates, some distilleries, like the ever-popular Buffalo Trace Distillery (which is not on the official Kentucky Bourbon Trail), opens bookings two months in advance and offer a waitlist. Other distilleries have calendars that extend out three months or more in advance.

Officials suggest researching the distilleries you know you want to visit first, figuring out when those calendars will be released, and booking those must-see experiences as soon as possible. Set calendar reminders in your phone, so that you can circle back when the time comes.

When should I book a hotel or Airbnb for a trip along the Kentucky Bourbon Trail?

If you're planning a trip for a weekend in April, early May, September, or October book ahead as much as possible. In most cases, you can find accommodations in Frankfort with about two weeks' advanced notice. Bardstown officials recommended booking at least 1-2 months in advance. For major events, such as Bardstown's Kentucky Bourbon Festival in September, some people secure rooms a full year ahead of time.

When should I make a reservation at a Kentucky bourbon distillery restaurant?

In general, officials recommend booking a dining reservation at least two weeks ahead of time. Distillery restaurants, typically, operate fewer hours than traditional restaurants, so their reservations will be scarcer. If you’ve already secured a bourbon experience at a distillery, try to book a reservation that coincides with it.

When should I book a tour company to help me travel the Kentucky Bourbon Trail?

Again, officials recommend locking this down as soon as possible. Many tour companies open up their calendars for booking as much as a year in advance.

How many Kentucky bourbon distilleries can you visit in a single day?

Tours typically range from 30 to 90 minutes. As you're planning your calendar, make sure you’re watching how closely you stack them and what your travel time between distilleries may be. Many distilleries have cocktail bars and gift shops, so even if you have some lag time in between, you will almost certainly have somewhere interesting to linger.

The closer the distilleries are to each other, the more you can visit in a day. Louisville, for example, has several distilleries within walking distance of each other, and in Lexington, you can hit three distilleries back-to-back at the Distillery District . Travelers will need a car or tour bus to get around distilleries in Bardstown or Frankfort. 

A leisurely traveler can hit about three in a single day, whereas a more thorough planner might go to five.

What are the hidden gems along the Kentucky Bourbon Trail?

Smaller craft distilleries tend to be easier to book a tour with than internationally known brands. Distilleries on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail Craft Tour may have more availability than the traditional Kentucky Bourbon Trail.

For example, Whiskey Thief Distilling Company in Frankfort still offers walk-in tours, but they recommend you call ahead.

Many newer or smaller distilleries are not on the official Kentucky Bourbon Trail such as J. Mattingly 1845 Distillery in Frankfort as well as Louisville's Buzzards Roost and NuLu Whiskey Company .

Bardstown Bourbon Company and Castle & Key also operate tasting rooms in downtown Louisville.

En ce 75e anniversaire du Championnat du Monde, le Britannique nous parle de quelques figures marquantes de l'histoire de la discipline

Les pilotes qui se sont alignés sur la route de Glencrutchery étaient loin de se douter de ce qui les attendait non seulement dans leur lutte au cours des sept tours tortueux des 60,721 km du circuit de TT de montagne, mais aussi pour les 75 années qui aillaient suivre. C'est par une matinée agréable, heureusement sèche et claire sur l'île de Man que le drapeau mannois est tombé à 11 heures précises le lundi 13 juin 1949. Le Championnat du Monde de moto est né. 447 kilomètres plus tard, Freddie Frith prend le drapeau à damier au guidon de sa Velocette 350cc et devient le premier vainqueur d'une course en Championnat du Monde. 75 ans et 3 392 Grands Prix plus tard, ce championnat continue de se développer dans un monde très différent.

Quatre ans seulement après la fin de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, la FIM lance la toute première série de Championnats du Monde de sport mécanique. Celui-ci comporte six manches et est ouvert aux motos solo ainsi qu'aux side-cars de 125, 250, 350 et 500cc. Les six circuits européens sélectionnés sont l'île de Man, Berne (Suisse), Assen (Pays-Bas), Spa-Francorchamps (Belgique), Clady (Ulster), l'Irlande du Nord et Monza (Italie). Il s'agit d'un projet incroyablement courageux à entreprendre si peu de temps après la fin de la guerre, mais il jète les bases très solides de ce dont nous sommes témoins aujourd'hui. Trois quarts de siècle plus tard, le Championnat du Monde MotoGP™ compte 20 manches réparties dans 16 pays et quatre continents.

Un total de 31 pays ont organisé des Grands Prix sur pas moins de 75 circuits au cours de cette période. Certains, comme Brno, le Sachsenring et le Nürburgring, sont passés de circuits de route à de véritables tracés. Assen, aux Pays-Bas, est le seul circuit qui reste de ce programme original de 1949 et qui accueille des Grands Prix chaque saison, à l'exception de 2020 en raison de la Covid.

Plus de 6 000 pilotes ont participé au Championnat du Monde jusqu'à présent. Ils ont représenté 62 nations différentes dans un championnat qui englobe véritablement le monde entier. Sur ces 6 000 coureurs, seuls 399 sont montés sur la plus haute marche du podium d'une course. 126 ont été couronnés Champion du Monde en solo, représentant 21 nations différentes.

Le plus jeune pilote à avoir participé à un Grand Prix a fini par remporter cinq Championnats du Monde, dont trois en MotoGP™. Jorge Lorenzo n'avait que 15 ans et un jour lorsqu'il a fait ses débuts en 125cc à Jerez en 2002. Il a dû manquer la première journée d'essais du Grand Prix d'Espagne parce qu'il n'avait encore que 14 ans. Le pilote le plus âgé à avoir participé à un Grand Prix est Frank Cope, qui a roulé jusqu'à 62 ans.

Giacomo Agostini reste le roi et le pilote le plus titré de l'histoire du championnat. En effet, l'Italien a remporté 15 titres mondiaux et 122 victoires en Grands Prix dans les Championnats du Monde 350 et 500cc, ce qui ne pourra jamais être éclipsé.

Enfin, repensez à cette matinée sur l'île de Man, il y a 75 ans. Freddie Frith n'a peut-être jamais réalisé l'importance de cette victoire en 350cc, mais le Néo-Zélandais Sid Jensen, lui, en était certainement conscient. Il était déterminé à devenir le premier pilote à prendre la piste lors des essais d'une course du Championnat du Monde. Dans l'obscurité, cinq ou six heures avant le début de la première séance d'essais du matin à cinq heures, il s'est rendu sur la ligne de départ avec son AJS 350cc. Ses amis ont gardé sa machine toute la nuit pour qu'il puisse entrer dans l'histoire au moment où le soleil se leverait sur la baie de Douglas. Tragiquement, cette première course a également été marquée par le premier décès en Championnat du Monde après la chute de Ben Drinkwater au quatrième tour.

Ce matin, alors que nous célébrons ces 75 années de Championnat du Monde, nous nous souvenons et rendons hommage à ces coureurs qui ont perdu la vie en vivant et en poursuivant un rêve.
