Will I experience symptoms of altitude sickness in the Sacred Valley?

40-50% of travelers experience minor symptoms of altitude sickness, also known as Acute Mountain Sickness, like shortness of breath, fatigue, and dizziness when traveling in high altitude destinations in Peru such as on the Inca Trail, Arequipa, and the Sacred Valley. Symptoms of altitude sickness generally alleviate after 24-48 hours in altitude. Best practices for minimizing its impact on your trip include taking the time to acclimate, drinking lots of water, resting, avoiding alcohol, and eating light non-fatty foods upon arrival at altitude.

Consult with your doctor before traveling to high altitude destinations.

What is the elevation of the Sacred Valley compared to Cusco?

The altitude in the Sacred Valley is approximately 8,000 feet (2,400 meters) above sea level while Cusco city sits at 11,150 feet (3,399 meters) above sea level. Giving a difference of 3,150 feet (960 meters) between the two destinations with Cusco being higher in altitude than the Sacred Valley.

How long should I spend in the Sacred Valley?

1-2 days. As you make your way from Cusco to Machu Picchu, you’ll pass through the Sacred Valley. We recommend an overnight stay in the Sacred Valley to take advantage of the breathtaking mountain scenery from one of the top Sacred Valley hotels. Many wish they had even more time here.

What is there to see in the Sacred Valley?

Apart from the incredible natural vistas of the Urubamba River and mountain range, the Sacred Valley is home to many unmissable sites. Top-sites in the Sacred Valley include the enigmatic concentric circles of Moray, the Maras Salt Flats, Ollantaytambo Ruins, Pisac Ruins, and Pisac Market.

Where should I stay in the Sacred Valley? In Ollantaytambo town or a Sacred Valley resort hotel?

Ollantaytambo town is a small Andean town without any 5-star accommodations. It’s perfect for those looking for fewer amenities and more authenticity, those who want to wander Ollantaytambo town and market on their off-time, and those who don’t plan to spend more than one night.

A short drive outside of Ollantaytambo town are magazine-worthy hotels on large-scale properties that house all the amenities you would need for your stay without even needing to leave the hotel property. From beautiful to down-right luxurious, your Inca Expert travel advisor is likely to recommend a night in one of these properties.

How far is the Sacred Valley from Machu Picchu?

Sometimes included in definitions of the Sacred Valley, the ruins of Machu Picchu are located 33 miles (53 km) west of what is generally considered its center.

How long is the train from the Sacred Valley to Machu Picchu?

The train journey from Ollantaytambo train station in the Sacred Valley to Machu Picchu is ~1 hour and 50 minutes.

How far is the Sacred Valley from Cusco?

The Sacred Valley is 45-miles (72km) outside of Cusco. The train journey from Cusco train station to Ollantaytambo train station is ~1 hour and 30 minutes. A private transfer will take ~1 hour and 30 minutes (depending on traffic). Your private Sacred Valley tour with Inca Expert will take ~6 hours from pick up in Cusco to drop-off at your Sacred Valley hotel.

Should I go directly to the Sacred Valley after arriving at the Cusco airport?

The Sacred Valley is the perfect stop for those who are concerned about the effects of altitude sickness. At only 8,000 feet above sea level (compared to Cusco’s 11,150 feet) acclimatizing your body in the Sacred Valley upon arrival will be more gradual, though some minor symptoms of altitude sickness are still possible.

If you prefer to have ample culinary, shopping, and nightlife options, the city of Cusco would be the better place to stay upon arrival. Consult with your doctor about whether altitude medicine may work for you if you’d prefer to stay in bustling Cusco.

What to expect impressive views, mild to hot temperatures although kind of windy at some places in the afternoons; mostly sunny days during the months of may, june, july, and august; stops at scenic spots en route; friendly english-speaking tour guide; your journey your way frequently asked questions, is the sacred valley worth visiting .

Yes Definitely!  The Sacred Valley is definitely worth visiting. Its stunning natural beauty, rich cultural history, and impressive archaeological sites make it a must-see destination in Peru. Travelers can explore the ruins of Pisac and Ollantaytambo, admire the amazing salt pans of Maras, and experience the traditional way of life in the local communities. The valley also offers a range of outdoor activities such as hiking, rafting, and zip-lining, making it a perfect destination for adventure enthusiasts. Even if it’s just to relax, enjoy the beauty and acclimate at a Sacred Valley hotel, it is definitely worth visiting.  Overall, the Sacred Valley is a unique and fascinating destination that should not be missed.

What is the Tour cancellation policy ?

  • If cancellation is made  with more than 3 days  minimum notice , we will refund the full amount of your deposit minus the 20% admin fees
  • If cancellation is made within less than 3-day notice, no refund can be given.
  • The strikes and natural disasters are unlikely events that are beyond our control which may force us to change the tour dates or in the worst scenario and if that represents a risk to the safety of our clients, cancel the tour. The strikes are normally announced a couple of weeks in advance so we will let you know in advance in case one is scheduled for that specific tour date and provide alternatives to either change or cancel the tour.

Is this a private or shared Tour ?

Our guided tours, including the Sacred Valley Tours, are private, which means that you will have a dedicated local tour Guide and transportation exclusively for your group.

What is the "Boleto Turistico" or Tourist Ticket / Pass ?

The Cusco Tourist Ticket , also known as the “Boleto Turistico” is a pass that allows visitors access to various archaeological sites, museums, and other cultural attractions in and around the city of Cusco, including the Sacred Valley. The ticket can be purchased at the entrance gate of the sites and they only accept cash in PEN SOL.

There are different types of tickets available, with the most popular being the “General Tourist Ticket” or “Boleto Turistico General,” which allows access to 16 different sites in and around Cusco, including the famous Inca ruins in the Sacred Valley, such as Pisac, Moray, Chinchero, and Ollantaytambo. If you plan to visit multiple attractions in both Cusco and the Sacred Valley, purchasing the General or Full Cusco Tourist Ticket can be a cost-effective way to gain access to these sites.

Alternatively, the “Partial Tourist Ticket” or “Boleto Turistico Parcial” is another ticket option. Unlike the General Tourist Ticket, this ticket only provides access to a limited number of sites. This ticket may be a good choice for visitors with limited time or those who are primarily interested in specific tourist attractions in the region.

So, if you’re wondering which ticket to purchase for a Sacred Valley Tour, the Partial Tourist Ticket will suit you best for visiting the Sacred Valley sites unless you also plan to visit the sites in Cusco. In that case, it would be best to get the Full Ticket.

At the end of the tour, can you drop us off at Ollantaytambo train station ?

Yes of course! Our guided tours are private so we are able to drop you off at the train station in Ollantaytambo so you can catch your train to Machu Picchu town.

What should I pack for this day trip ?

  • Daypack with personal belongings
  • Sunblock and sunhat
  • Comfortable shoes (running or hiking shoes)
  • Cash in PEN SOL for your Entrance Tickets, souvenirs or any other expenditures
  • Rain gear or rain plastic “poncho”, especially for the rain season (November to April) They can be purchased locally

Ollantaytambo Ruins

The Ollantaytambo ruins are a unique archaeological site. This is the only place where the Incas took a stand against the Spanish conquerors. After putting up a fight, the Spanish gathered more forces and took it over as a fortress. Perfectly carved into the mountainside, with Inca terraces that overlook the Urubamba river you’ll understand why it was once an Incan estate as you gaze out into the scenic Sacred Valley.

Maras Salt Mines

While most mines are underground, the Maras Salt Mines are above-ground terraced pools that fill with natural saltwater. As the water evaporates, the salt solidifies and has been harvested for centuries by the nearby communities.

The Moray ruins are believed to have been an experimental farm. Archaeological evidence suggests that the concentric circles of terraces were used to test how altitudes affected the different growth rates and crop productions.

Chinchero is where to go in the Sacred Valley if you’re wanting to visit a traditional Andean town. Get a glimpse into the contemporary Andean culture and visit nearby Inca ruins and historical sites.

Peru Highlights

Peru is filled with archaeological ruins, scenic landscapes, and delicious flavors. Must-see places in Peru include:

Hike the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in four or two days. The Inca Trail is a 500-year old pathway where the elite Incas once entered into the “Lost City of the Incas”. Plan with your Peru for Less travel advisor in advance, Inca Trail permits tend to sell out even 6-months in advance.

Amazon Rainforest

Step into the lush Peruvian Amazon Rainforest and witness a spectacular array of wildlife in its natural habitat. Lodges in Puerto Maldonado are ideal for excursions and daily activities. Those looking for a more luxurious Amazon experience would love an Iquitos Amazon River cruise. Colorful macaws, giant tarantulas, and playful river otters are among the sights you’ll behold.

Cusco city has it all, archaeological ruins, colonial buildings, top-rated restaurants, and countless places to explore. Your Cusco City Tour will take you to the top highlights like Sacsayhuaman, Q’enko, the Cusco Cathedral, and more.

Arequipa is a picturesque town and also the second-largest city in Peru. Local markets, beautifully built colonial architecture, and El Misti volcano are among the things you’ll see while walking the cobblestone streets of the white city.

Lake Titicaca

Sail on the deep blue waters of Lake Titicaca and step on the reed Uros and Taquile floating islands. Some of the best weavers are found in this area so pick up some Peruvian textiles here for unique souvenirs.

Nazca Lines

The Nazca Lines are mysterious geoglyphs and geometric shapes drawn onto the desert floor hundreds of years ago by the Nazca culture. Little is known about them nevertheless, the Nazca Lines inspire awe in those who take a flight over them.

Lima is a mixture of modern city living and historical significance. Here you’ll find Central restaurant (ranked #6 by 50 Worlds Best), UNESCO World Heritage sites like Historic City Center with the San Francisco Convent, and the best shopping in Peru.

Option A - Cusco to Cusco (Code CSV1-A)

We head out of Cusco around 8am towards the high mountain village of Chinchero, famous for its weaving and spectacularly sited at a high altitude (3800m / 12,500 ft). On this version of the Sacred Valley Tour, we are traveling in the opposite direction as most agencies in order to avoid the crowds.

In Chinchero, we will visit a weaving center and be treated to a demonstration of traditional weaving and dyeing techniques. If we’re there on a Sunday, we’ll also visit the famous Chinchero market!

From Chinchero, we’ll enjoy jaw-dropping vistas as we descend into the Sacred Valley, continuing on towards Ollantaytambo. This quaint Inca city is the only existing town that is laid out according to an Inca plan, and it features an impressive set of terraces leading from the village center.

We will have a buffet lunch in Urubamba before heading to Pisac, our final stop for the day. In Pisac we will first visit the attractive ruins, built with breathtaking audacity by the Incas high above the town, and then descend to the artisan market, one of the biggest in all of South America! After this, we head back to Cusco, and transfer to your hotel.

Option B - Cusco to Ollantaytambo (Code CSV1-B)

This is the “standard” Sacred Valley Tour itinerary. We will start out early, leaving Cusco to Pisac where we will begin by exploring that city’s ruins.

The Pisac ruins are some of the finest and largest in the entire valley. Despite the excellent condition of many of the structures, little is conclusively known about the site’s actual purpose. It appears to have been part city, part ceremonial center, and part military complex. It might even have been a royal estate of the Inca emperor Pachacutec. It was certainly a religious temple, and although it was reinforced with the ramparts of a massive citadel, the Incas never retreated here to defend their empire against the Spaniards (and Pisac was, unlike Machu Picchu, known to Spanish forces).

After visiting the ruins, we will descend to the village of Pisac itself, famous for its tourist market where hundreds of stalls crowd the central square. The square is marked by a small church, San Pedro el Apóstolo, and massive  pisonay  trees.

Leaving Pisac, we head towards Urubamba where we will visit a traditional ceramics factory where we can purchase beautiful earthenware. After visiting the ceramic factory we will have lunch in Urubamba, then continue on to Ollantaytambo with the impressive Inca terraces of resistance (to avoid landslides). The archaeological site consists of a series of superimposed terraces of carved stones accessed by long staircases.

The design of Ollantaytambo village and the majority of its foundations date from the Inca era when it was a strategic military, religious, and agricultural center. You will have time to stroll in the picturesque streets after settling in at your accommodations.

End of services.

Everything You Need to Know About Visiting Peru’s Sacred Valley

The Sacred Valley is located to the north in the direction of Machu Picchu, 2 hours from Cusco by car. In the last 10 years it has become the favorite place for the people of Cusco and for tourists who quickly fall in love with its warm and agreeable climate and its tourist attractions

One of the closest places to the Sacred Valley is Pisac, located only 40 minutes by car from Cusco, or you could also go to the town of Chinchero which is approximately 1 hour from Cusco. Both routes connect you to the Sacred Valley and reach Ollantaytambo which is the last place to visit in the Sacred Valley before traveling to Machu Picchu.

if you love adventure and hikings we recommend visiting Pisac ruins, from where you will hike up to the summit where you will get one of the best views over the Sacred Valley then hike down through an Inca Trail to Pisac town, this route is also quite recommended for those who wish to warm up before starting the 4 day classic Inca Trail.

The Sacred Valley has countless places to see, even if you’re tired of seeing the stone ruins, the Maras salt flats can look white, brown, beige or red depending on the angle and light. Created and fed by a nearby spring, the salt is harvested by local families who own the place, most salt pools are handed down genrations keeping the tradition alive.

Moray is a place out of the ordinary that almost nobody expects to see, the ruins of Moray form circles exactly built and oriented to catch the sunlight during the day which makes each terrace create its own microclimate thus initiating the adjustment of different species of plants at different heights.

During your visit to the Sacred Valley buying the tourist ticket is essential since it will allow you access to all the ruins in the Sacred Valley, you should know that there are 2 types of tourist tickets; the full ticket costs 130 soles or 40 US dollars, and the 70 soles ticket which is only valid for two days and allows you to only visit the ruins in the Sacred Valley but not in Cusco. this tickets can be bought in any place you are going to visit, remember that before you make your trip to the Sacred Valley you must bring cash so you can avoid inconvenients.

Sacred Valley Tour Day Tour | Sacred Valley tour from Cusco

Description

The Sacred Valley of the Incas was undoubtedly a key area of settlement for the Incas. Its agreeable climate and fertile plains make a rare and fruitful combination for the high Andes. It was also the route to the jungle and therefore an area with access to fruits and plants of tropical lowlands. The Sacred Valley also served as a buffer zone, protecting Cusco from invasions of the Antis, fierce jungle tribes raided the Andean highlands from time to time. It is called like this because of its vast territory which is between Pisac and Ollantaytambo located at a short distance from the city of Cusco where the Incas had their agricultural areas and beautiful towns. This valley is well-known for having very special conditions such as excellent weather, fertile lands and the waters of the sacred Incas river named Vilcanota which changes its name in the town of Urumbamba where its named after this town. The Sacred Valley  of the Incas has breathtaking Andean landscapes where inhabitants who are native quechua speakers keep lots of the traditions of their ancestors. You can also see the technological development that the Incas reached in agriculture by using shed systems that are still used today accompanied by the most sofisticated designs of hydraulic engineering. Pachamama rituals also stand out nowadays, this is a ritual done to ask blessings and permission to Mother Earth to have excellent crops or to go through specific areas. Nowadays, each Sacred Valley town has a merger of Incan and Spanish architectural styles, the richness of its people with folklore and handicrafts with its inhabitants clothing styles, amaze tourists from all over the world.

Stretching for more than 60 miles east to west, the Sacred Valley encompasses some of the most stunning scenery in all of Peru. There is so much history, culture, and natural beauty to be found there that it should rank at the top of the list for any world traveler. Here's what you need to know before you go.

Geography of the Sacred Valley

Surrounded by the high Andes on all sides, the Sacred Valley sits at an elevation that never falls below 6,700 feet and routinely rises well above 9,500 feet. At that altitude, the air is thin and can create challenges for those who aren't fully acclimated. Taller still are the twin peaks of Sahuasiray and Veronica, both of which stand well over 19,000 feet and dominate the horizon.

The valley itself has been carved over hundreds of millennia by the Urubamba River, which is fed by mountain streams created by melting snow high above. In the language of the Quechua people, Urubamba means "sacred river," which helps give the valley its name. The banks of that river are lined by lush, rolling meadows that serve as a sanctuary from the harsh and demanding Andes and the hot and humid Amazon.

History of the Sacred Valley

Archeologists and historians believe that the Sacred Valley has been continuously inhabited for more than 3,000 years. First with the arrival of the Chanapata people in approximately 800-900 BCE and later by the Qotacalla the Killke civilizations that came 1,200 years later. These groups were attracted to the rich, fertile land that was found there, allowing them to more easily grow crops that could sustain their populations.

Around 1,000 CE, the Inca began to rise in prominence throughout the region, using their capital city of Cusco as a seat of power. Using a combination of diplomacy, military strength, and administrative control, the Inca took command of the Sacred Valley with its empire eventually stretching well beyond. They used the lush, fertile area to grow corn and other vegetables, which allowed their culture to thrive and grow. As it did, stone cities and fortresses—such as Machu Picchu—were built throughout the area, becoming lasting monuments to their civilization.

The Inca would rule this part of the world for more than 400 years. The arrival of the Spanish, seeking gold, gems, and slaves, broke their hold on the Sacred Valley. Still, Cusco remains the most prominent city in the region to this day, continuing a lasting legacy of the Incan civilization.

How to Get There

Your Journey to the Sacred Valley begins with first getting to Peru. The vast majority of international flights come and go from Lima, the country's capital city with more than 8.8 million inhabitants. Founded in 1535, the city is rich in culture and history, with plenty for visitors to see and do. It also serves as a gateway to the rest of the country, with domestic flights to all major cities, including Cusco.

There are a number of airlines that provide service from Lima to Cusco on a daily basis, including LATAM, Sky, and Iberia. Of those, LATAM offers the most regular service–up to 16 flights per day—and inexpensive fares. No matter which airline you choose, however, the plane ride is only about an hour in length. If you can, wrangle a window seat, as the view of the Andes along the way is well worth it.

It is possible to drive or take a bus from Lima to Cusco, but the journey is a long one. The route covers 685 miles through increasingly remote and rugged terrain. If you go by bus, expect a journey of about 21 hours in length, with a few stops along the way.

Exploring Cusco

Upon arriving in Cusco, it is wise to take a few days to rest and acclimate to the higher altitude. The city itself sits at an elevation of 11,152 feet, which is actually higher than the Sacred Valley itself. The thin air in the city can cause shortness of breath, dizziness, and even headaches, so take your time and move slowly while letting your body adjust.

Thankfully, there is plenty to see and do in Cusco while you are getting settled. Just wandering the city streets is quite a treat as there are plenty of old colonial buildings to take in. You'll also discover markets to wander through and a surprising amount of wide open spaces to just sit and relax.

Other options include visiting the golden temple of Kornicancha, one of the most revered sites in the entire Incan Empire, and strolling through San Blas, a funky art district with shops and eclectic goods to peruse. Of course, no traveler has truly explored Cusco without visiting the Plaza de Armas, which is a busy hub of the city at nearly every hour of the day. Here, you'll also find the UNESCO Heritage Site of the Cusco Cathedral and the equally impressive Church de La Compañia de Jesus.

Entering the Sacred Valley

Once you've become acclimated to the altitude, you'll be more than ready to travel to the Sacred Valley itself. While the entrance to the valley is just a mere 12 miles from Cusco, the road to get there is a twisty, winding affair that can be a bit disconcerting for first-time visitors. It's all part of the adventure and if you make the trip a time or two, you'll soon find it to be in exhilarating ride.

For most travelers, the route to the Sacred Valley passes through the village of Pisac, followed by Urubamba, before eventually reaching the charming town of Ollantaytambo. It is there that you can purchase a ticket to ride the train to Machu Picchu, making it one of the more busier tourist hubs in the area. Expect an additional three hours and 20 minutes aboard that train before approaching the ancient fortress itself.

There are multiple ways for travelers to reach the Sacred Valley. Most visitors get there as part of a tour group that they've organized prior to arrival. Independent adventurers can hop the bus, which sets off from Cusco for Ollantaytambo every 15 minutes, with several stops en route. This the most inexpensive way to reach the valley, although it requires a bit more awareness of your surroundings to know when and where you want to get off.

It is also possible to hire a taxi or share a ride with other travelers heading in the same direction. A number of locals living in Cusco offer up a car share service that is more personal and comfortable than riding the bus for not a lot more money.

Things to See and Do in the Sacred Valley

The most obvious thing to see in the Sacred Valley is Machu Picchu of course. But with an average of 2,500 visitors a day, the site can get crowded quickly. So once you've had a chance to take in the Inca monument, you may be ready to venture out a bit further and see what else the valley has to offer. Here are a few suggestions:

Pisac: Just outside the town of Pisac you'll find a completely different set of Inca ruins, including an ancient observatory and the remnants of Inca farms. The local "Indian Market" is also a weekly gathering that is good spot to pick up handcrafted jewelry, textiles, glass, and other unique items.

Ollantaytambo: Incan engineering and architecture is on display in Ollantaytambo, where visitors will find another stone monument that rivals Machu Picchu in terms of size and scope. Travelers pass through an arched gate made of jade and stone on their way to the site, which is one of the best preserved ruins in the entire country. But the town itself is also quite intriguing, as it was built by the Inca more than 500 years ago, with families still occupying some of the stone houses found there.

Urubamba: If you're an active traveler, you'll find plenty to love in Urubamba. From here, you can go on guided hikes in the Andes, hop on a mountain bike for a fun ride, or go whitewater rafting on class III and IV water.

Calca: While Inca ruins can be found in Calca, the real reason to visit is the stunning views. Here, the Andes Mountains take center stage, with some of the most breathtaking scenery imaginable. The perpetually snow peaks of Sahuasiray and Pitusira make a stunning backdrop while wandering the archeological site of Huchuy Cusco.

Yucay and Moray: These two locations played a central role in Inca agricultural production. In order to produce large amounts of grain and maize, the Incan people had to create stepped terraces to take advance of the fertile ground found along the steep slopes. Those terraces took a monumental effort to create and they still stand in place to this day.

Maras: The salt mines found near the town of Maras were in use all the way back to the age of the Inca. Once an important part of trade and commerce for the empire, those mines remain a popular destination for visitors to the region even today. The village still has plenty of leftover signs from the colonial period too, blending architecture from across history into one unique location.

Cinchero: Another quaint town to add to your places to visit. This village has yet more signs of Spanish colonialism, including a wonderful church from that era in history. Visitors will also discover terraced slopes used in Inca agriculture, local craftsman weaving unique apparel, and a Sunday market that is bustling with goods, local delicacies, charm, and character.

When to Go to the Sacred Valley

Despite its alpine setting, the Sacred Valley offers surprisingly stable temperatures throughout the year. The same can not be said about precipitation, however. The rainy season runs from November through March, with frequent rain showers, dark clouds, and damp conditions. Unsurprisingly, this is when the valley is at its most quiet and empty, although the weather makes the least enjoyable time to be there as well.

For the warmest, driest, and most consistent weather, plan on visiting between June and August. Naturally, this is also the tourist high season, which means crowds will be larger, lines will be longer, and the popular tourist sites—particularly Machu Picchu—will be filled to capacity. Still, if you want to maximize your possibility of enjoying your time outdoors, these are the best months to plan your trip.

Opportunistic travelers will find that the shoulder seasons of April and May, as well as September and October, offer an acceptable balance of smaller crowds and good weather. Yes, it can rain or snow during those months, but you'll also find days of sunshine and warm temperatures too. Just be sure to pack for a variety of conditions and you won't be disappointed.
