Behold Burbank’s Iconic Safari Inn!

Living in Los Angeles, it’s easy to take for granted some of the iconic locations in Southern California – but, as we have lost a number of them in recent years, I wanted to eyeball one of the coolest locations in “beautiful downtown Burbank”, the legendary Safari Inn!

This photo is from “San Fernando Valley Blog” – a classic shot of the Inn from years ago:

I love this shot – and I love the look of The Safari Inn, and am so glad to see it alive and well!

According to their website:

“The Safari Inn is one of Burbank’s best kept historical landmarks! This famous little Inn was built in 1955 and has managed to maintain the same style essence since its original construction. It is one of the only properties left in the city with a 1950’s retro décor and a neon sign that lights up Olive Avenue.”

You may not have ever stayed here, but you’ve no doubt seen it in lots of movies and TV shows, like “True Romance”:

As their website points out:

“The Safari Inn is well known throughout the entertainment industry as a preferred location for several scenes in films that have included Blockbuster movie titles such as “True Romance,” “Coach Carter,” “Apollo 13,” along with numerous appearances in breakthrough series such as “Six Feet Under,” “CSI: Vegas,” “Prison Break,” “Desperate Housewives” and “Monk.” The exterior of the Safari Inn has also been used in album covers for famous rock bands such as “The Wallflowers.”

Here is that album cover:

My Film Encounter!

The other day I was in the area so I drove by, always drawn by the classic neon sign:

This time, however, I notice some unusual activity going on – and a glimpse of yellow police tape:

A look up at their raised pool deck confirmed that I had wandered into a movie scene! It’s one of the best things about living in SoCal – movie cameras and palm trees!

Who knows what they were filming – at some point in the future I will see this scene and say “hey! I was there!”

If you are interested in knowing more about the Safari Inn, here is a link to more pics, history and info:

If you like Hollywood history, and cool movie locations, then you will love this one:

The Hollywood Hightower!

This unique tower has been used in a number of movies as well, such as Robert Altman’s 70’s classic “The Long Goodbye”.

Dropping by from Susie’s blog party! Love this kind of place! I am all about the retro-style.They don’t make places like this anymore and it’s sad they are all disappearing nowadays. Great pics. Retro-cool indeed.

Thanks! I love shiny new buildings, but we don’t have to destroy ALL of the retro charm in LA in order to build them…thanks for your comment!

Thanks for sharing John, a great looking hotel and of course I loved the hightower in The Long Goodbye. The kind of place I would love to live in.

Yes indeed, live in a bit of Hollywood AND movie history!

Susie sent me, and glad she did! Adding the Safari Hotel to my travel list, when in the area. So cool!

Thanks for your comment! I you click on the travel section of my blog you will see many more stories about cool places in LA and elsewhere – thanks for visiting!

I’ll note that for future travel! 🙂

I came over via Susie. I’m a norcal girl myself now (originally east coast), so it was fun to see some of those iconic pictures and read some of the history behind the visual stereotypes we have of L.A.

I’ve got a few more coming as well…I like to mix up my blog with travel, food, movies, music and general “this interest me” – so there will be things you may not be interested in, but I hope you stop by again! Thanks for your note!

Hi John, I wonder what happened to Elliot Gould. You still hear about Barbara Streisand frequently but not her ex husband. I also live in California not too far from Burbank. Thank you for letting people who live far from us learn about these movie locations. Susie sent me! Maybe you can check out my blog if you need any blogging tips. I write about how bloggers can be more successful. I also have blog parties like Susie. Janice

Thanks for your comment, and I will definitely check out your blog…Elliot Gould was on Ray Donovan a few seasons back so he is acting!

Hi John, 1. Thanks for your reply and the update on Elliiot Gould. I don’t watch that show so I didn’t know. I’m glad to hear he’s still acting. I was a fan. 2. Someone from Susie’s party ended up following me to a blog I published on 3 years ago! Here is link to the blog party I’m having this weekend. https://www.mostlyblogging.com/blog-party-mlk/ 3. Thanks for saying you’ll check out my blog. If you click the link, you can party and check out the right blog! Janice

Ann Margaret also turned up in Ray Donovan. That woman still beautiful and a powerhouse as far as I’m concerned.

Yes and in “Going In Style” – so good to see her still acting!

That was a nice scene with Alan Arkin too.

Susie sent me. That is some building. I thought I’d seen all of Altman’s films, but sure missed that one. Thanks for the heads up. Interesting blog.

Thanks, Altman’s very modern take on Raymond Chandler is fascinating to see, and world-weary Elliot Gould is terrific! Thanks for the comment!

' src=

My son lives nearby and I usually rent an Airbnb or a VRBO. I’ll have to look into staying here instead!

It might be retro fun!

As long as the beds aren’t from the 1950’s.

John: Oh, yes. This is one of those iconic “L.A.” locations. Been by there many a time.

“That MI6 building is an iconic structure. It is very close to the new US embassy too. I doubt that’s a coincidence! 🙂”

Pete: Truer words. IIRC, a former-CIA analyst made the statement I always recall, “There is no such thing as a foreign intelligence service.” Even allies, long-term or new, spy on each other.

' src=

I recall that motel from scenes in films. Very cool to live so close to it. Then again, I lived in the centre of London for most of my life, and that place is a permanent film set! Best wishes, Pete.

Yes indeed, Pete! I particularly like the Bond film “Skyfall” when they destroyed your spy headquarters on the Thames…anything for art!

That MI6 building is an iconic structure. It is very close to the new US embassy too. I doubt that’s a coincidence! 🙂 Best wishes, Pete.

Yes indeed! As you point out, so many times the city was used for filming – I even shot TV there several times, including the opening of Planet Hollywood London, which I posted about to commemorate my very unpleasant Mel Gibson encounter! – https://johnrieber.com/2013/08/14/heaven-and-mel-shocking-mel-gibson-book-my-mel-encounter/

I recall that post. I have never eaten at PH in London, but worked close by. I think Gibson was badly affected by the ‘celebrity madness’! Best wishes, Pete.

Very special FX in this surprisingly gripping account of the ill-fated 1970 moonflight. There’s far less location filming than you might imagine, since the gigantic Saturn V rockets, which carried the moon missions from Cape Kennedy, have long since been replaced by recyclable shuttles – which now too are history. As a consequence, much of the movie was tricked up in Hollywood .

The Saturn V launched in the movie is a one-twentieth scale model, while most of the sequence is computer generated. Mission Control, too, was filmed in the studios at Universal.

To achieve the authentic feeling of weightlessness, director Ron Howard filmed the Apollo capsule scenes on a set built inside a KC-135 cargo plane used for NASA training flights. The jet followed a 30,000 feet parabolic trajectory before going into a roller-coaster dive, giving 23 seconds of weightlessness to get a shot in the can.

The effect on stomach contents of ten days filming under these conditions earned the KC-135 the nickname the ‘Vomit Comet’. The plane flew from Ellington Airport (formerly Ellington Field), about 15 miles south of Houston , Texas .

Rather like some enormous dinosaur, NASA’s moving parts are a long, long way from its brain though, fortunately for space buffs who’ll doubtless want to explore the real thing, both sites can be visited.

The launch site, which provided backgrounds for the faked take-off, is of course the Kennedy Space Center , Merritt Island , Florida .

Merritt Island , most of which is a wildlife reserve, is reached by I-405 from Titusville , on the coast 50 miles east of Orlando, or Route 3 north on Bennett Causeway from the town of Cocoa . The Visitor Complex is located between Range Road and East Avenue SW.

The basic Complex tour takes in IMAX® space films, exhibits and shows – including the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame with interactive spaceflight simulators. There are extra add-on goodies, too.

The 52-storey Vehicle Assembly Building , where the Saturn rockets were built, is seen in the movie, but the open door is another piece of computer generated trickery.

Even if NASA had been persuaded to open the 400-foot-high doors for filming, there wouldn’t have been a Saturn inside. Sophisticated motion-control techniques were used to add the rocket to a genuine helicopter shot. You can see one of the old Saturn rockets on the Space Center tour, though.

Apollo 13: a Saturn V rocket in the Rocket Park at the Johnson Space Center, Houston

The other place to see a Saturn V is in the Rocket Park at the Johnson Space Center , about 20 miles south of Houston on I-45, Texas , site of the real Mission Control. Space Center Houston is the visitor center. The behind-the-scenes NASA Tram Tour takes you through the center, where you can visit the Historic Mission Control Center, the Space Vehicle Mockup Facility or the current Mission Control Center.

Apollo 13 location: the Safari Inn, Olive Boulevard, Burbank, San Fernando Valley

You can also visit the ‘Florida’ motel with an ocean view where Marilyn Lovell ( Kathleen Quinlan ) spends the night before the launch, and where she ominously loses her wedding ring in the shower. It’s actually in Los Angeles : the Safari Inn, 1911 Olive Boulevard , near Buena Vista , just north of the Disney Studios in Burbank .

This Sixties-themed motel with illuminated ‘African’ sign can also be seen as Clarence and Alabama’s hideaway in Tony Scott ’s film of Quentin Tarantino ’s True Romance .

The apartments of astronauts Jack Swigert ( Kevin Bacon ) and Ken Mattingly ( Gary Sinise ) were in the old Ambassador Hotel, which stood at 3400 Wilshire Boulevard , midtown Los Angeles , a regular movie star – seen in The Graduate , Oliver Stone ’s The Doors , True Romance , S.W.A.T. , Rocky and Se7en among many others – until being demolished in 2006.

Best Things to Do in Burbank California – A Tour of Burbank Filming Locations

  • In the City / Los Angeles / USA

Having lived in LA for a year, we only scratched the surface of everything to explore in town. Because we lived in NoHo, we regularly spent time in Burbank for Porto’s Bakery and movie theater, but we didn’t realize all the things we were passing by on the way.

Besides being home to giant studios like Warner Bros. Studios & The Walt Disney Company, there are plenty of film locations that you can visit on your own. You can walk the streets, dine at, or play at some of the same places your favorite movies and TV shows were filmed. There were even a few places we had been to and never realized that they were filming locations. We loved getting a look behind the filmmaking process and had some fun recreating some of the shots from the movies too!

To help you get started, we’ve put together a guide so that you can do a self-guided tour of the area.

Besides doing a self-guided tour, you can check out the Warner Bros Studio Tour Hollywood and try to catch a live taping of one of your favorite shows ( we saw Conan back in the day). Also, don’t forget to check out the four major neighborhoods in Burbank.

  • Downtown Burbank  is full of shopping, bars, restaurants, and the largest AMC in the nation.
  • Magnolia Park is a hip and quirky district where you can shop at boutiques and find small cafes and eats.
  • Media District is where the Walt Disney Company and Warner Bros studios are.
  • Airport District is a convenient travel hub with plenty of shopping and conference hotels.

PRO TIPS FOR FIRST TIME VISITORS

  • Book your hotel directly from Visit Burbank  and receive a $50 gift card just for booking!
  • Burbank has its own airport, which is much easier to deal with than the massive LAX. You can get in and out of town without dealing with all the crowds and traffic.
  • If you love the outdoors, there are great hikes in the city.
  • Burbank is a great place to stay if you’re planning on going the Universal Hollywood. It’s just down the street and you’ll be surrounded by a ton of great shopping and food.
  • During our weekend in Burbank, we stayed at the Tangerine Hotel , which is within walking distance to a bunch of eateries. If any of the places are too busy, you can even take food to go and enjoy it poolside.

Have you seen any of these movies/shows? Which of these filming locations would you want to see most?

ET was filmed up in the foothills of Burbank and Pulp Fiction and several other movies were filmed at Bobs Big Boy on Riverside Drive, also check out the Grifith Observatory. Rebel With Out a Cause (James Dean & Natily Wood), Charlie’s Angels ( Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz, Demi Moore) and countless others have been shot there

Thanks! Will definitely have to check it out next time we go.

I loved the Warner Brothers Tour. I think it was the best “touristy” money we spent in LA and every time I recognize it on TV in some capacity I get excited.

OOOOOOH I love this list!!! (I really love that Back to the Future shot you were able to recreate!)

Thanks, Starr!! :) Jacob had a lot of fun with that one haha

I love this idea – it’s always a blast seeing places you know from movies. When my sister lived in LA, they’d shoot segments outside her apartment all the time, and we’d have fun trying to guess what they were filming.

What did they shoot outside their apartment? We didn’t see anything shoot outside of ours, but we always found it funny when they referenced our streets in 24 where all the crimes where happening. haha it wasn’t thaaaat ghetto. :P

"Perfect Fit!" Great location. Not too far from universal studios. Our room was clean and staff were wonderful. Very helpful, kind and prompt to our needs. We stayed two nights and really enjoyed having a 1st floor room. It made unpacking/packing a family of 5 so much easier. Added bonus, we were able to park our vehicle by our room and NO parking fee! We used the shuttle service, the driver was prompt and kind. Overall great stay! If we’re in the area again this will be our choice to stay. Full Review

‘The Morning Show’ A Look at Filming Locations

The Morning Show: A Behind-the-Scenes Look at Filming Locations

The Morning Show: More Than Just Morning News

“The Morning Show,” an Apple TV+ drama, has been captivating audiences with its intricate blend of real-world topics like politics, the #MeToo movement, and the COVID-19 pandemic, all while unraveling the lives of the characters involved in a popular network broadcast morning news program in New York City, known as The Morning Show (TMS).

The Morning Show: A Behind-the-Scenes Look at Filming Locations

A Star-Studded Ensemble Cast

The series boasts a stellar ensemble cast including Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, Billy Crudup, and Steve Carell, who have garnered numerous accolades for their compelling performances. However, while the series is set in the bustling city of New York, most of its filming occurs elsewhere, primarily in California.

The Illusion of New York City: Filming in California

The Morning Show: A Behind-the-Scenes Look at Filming Locations

Despite the series’ New York setting, the majority of the scenes, even those supposedly occurring in New York City, are filmed in Los Angeles, California. Iconic locations like the Safari Inn in Burbank and 611 Place in downtown Los Angeles have doubled as New York locales, providing the perfect backdrop to this intricately woven narrative.

Safari Inn, Burbank: A Popular Filming Destination

The Safari Inn in Burbank, California, served as the location for a pivotal scene in season 1, where Jennifer Aniston’s character, Alex, stays while reporting on the Los Angeles fires. This hotel is no stranger to the camera, having been featured in numerous films and other television series, making it a recognizable spot for avid movie and TV show fans.

611 Place, Los Angeles: The Stand-In Skyscraper

Another significant location is 611 Place, a 42-story building in downtown Los Angeles, which doubles as the home to the UBA network in the series. This building has been a popular choice for various productions, serving as a convincing substitute for a New York City skyscraper, allowing the city of angels to masquerade as the city that never sleeps.

The Morning Show: A Behind-the-Scenes Look at Filming Locations

Sony Pictures Studios: Crafting the World of The Morning Show

When locations in and around Los Angeles and New York City couldn’t meet the production’s needs, the crew turned to Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City, California. Here, multiple sets were constructed to bring to life the interiors of the UBA network building and the characters’ residences, providing a controlled environment to capture the essence of the series.

Los Angeles: The Central Filming Hub

The Morning Show: A Behind-the-Scenes Look at Filming Locations

Los Angeles, with its versatile landscapes and iconic locations, has been the central filming location for all three seasons of “The Morning Show.” The production team, constrained by the pandemic, showcased their creativity by transforming various spots in Los Angeles to represent different locations, from New Orleans’ French Quarter to a train station in Wuhan, China.

A Glimpse of the Real New York City

While Los Angeles serves as the primary filming location, some scenes required the authentic New York City backdrop. Iconic landmarks like Times Square and Central Park have been featured, providing viewers with glimpses of the real city where the series is set, adding an extra layer of realism to the show.

The Morning Show: A Behind-the-Scenes Look at Filming Locations

Coney Island Excursion: A Unique Filming Experience

In the third season, Jon Hamm’s character, Paul Marks, and Jennifer Aniston’ s Alex, find themselves in Coney Island, Brooklyn, New York. The unique and iconic nature of Coney Island necessitated actual filming on location, offering a distinct visual experience that couldn’t be replicated elsewhere.

Conclusion: A Cinematic Journey

“The Morning Show” has taken its viewers on a cinematic journey, blending real-world locations and meticulously crafted sets to bring its narrative to life. The series, while set in New York City, utilizes the diverse landscapes of Los Angeles and the iconic spots in various cities to create a visually rich experience, all while maintaining the illusion of a singular setting.

The Morning Show: A Behind-the-Scenes Look at Filming Locations

New Episodes and Continuation

The series continues to weave in contemporary issues, maintaining its relevance and appeal. New episodes of “The Morning Show” are available on Apple TV+, offering more intriguing narratives and a closer look at the characters navigating their lives in the fast-paced world of broadcast news.

This behind-the-scenes look at the filming locations of “The Morning Show” provides a deeper appreciation for the series, showcasing the meticulous attention to detail and the creative solutions employed to bring this compelling drama to our screens. Whether it’s the bustling streets of New York City or the iconic landmarks of Los Angeles, each location adds a unique flavor to this critically acclaimed series.

The safari inn from “true romance”.

Safari Inn (6 of 24)

One oft-filmed-at locale that I had known about for ages, but had never gotten around to stalking was the historic Safari Inn on West Olive Avenue in Burbank. I had driven by the motel countless times over the years – I get my hair done right across the street, in fact – and, even though I knew of the site’s prestigious filming pedigree, for some odd reason, I never thought to stalk it. Then, a couple of weeks ago, my hair stylist happened to be running late, so I decided to pop on over to the decades-old inn to finally do some proper stalking of the place.

The Safari Inn was originally constructed in 1955 and, amazingly enough, still looks almost exactly the same today as it did then.

Safari Inn (2 of 24)

The site is most famous for its iconic neon sign, which has stood as a beacon on Olive Avenue, beckoning passersby and road-trippers alike, since the day the motel was founded.

Safari Inn (15 of 24)

Today, the boutique hotel, which was just recently renovated, boasts 55 rooms and suites, most with their own kitchen or kitchenette, a fitness center, laundry facilities, free parking, and complimentary shuttle service to and from the Burbank Airport. Not bad for around $100 a night. And the traveler reviews on TripAdvisor all look to be pretty favorable, to boot.

Safari Inn (13 of 24)

The Safari Inn also features a large, second-story patio deck . . .

Safari Inn (10 of 24)

. . . which overlooks a pool.

Safari Inn (18 of 24)

I absolutely love the pool’s feather-shaped cut-out, which you can see in the bottom left of the photograph below and which matches the feather on the inn’s famous signage. So cute!

Safari Inn (23 of 24)

The Safari Inn’s most notable onscreen appearance was in 1993’s True Romance , where it masqueraded as the supposed Hollywood-area motel where Clarence Worley (Christian Slater) and Alabama Whitman (Patricia Arquette) stayed while visiting L.A. Some camera trickery and crafty editing was used to make the hotel appear as if it was located on Sunset Boulevard in the movie, though, and not in the heart of suburban Burbank.

ScreenShot7255

The interior of Clarence and Alabama’s room was just a set and not an actual Safari Inn room. You can see what one of the hotel’s real life rooms looks like here . Despite this fact, a girl in one of my former acting classes booked the “ True Romance room” for her True Romance -loving boyfriend’s birthday one year.

ScreenShot7257

Because Clarence and Alabama’s door is never actually shown in the movie, I was not able to figure out what room was used for the exterior shots.

ScreenShot7297

All I was able to ascertain was that it was a second floor room, located in the northwest corner of the property, in the vicinity of the area denoted with a pink arrow in the photograph below.

Safari Inn- True Romance room

True Romance is hardly the first production to utilize the Safari Inn, though. Thanks to the L.A. Bizarro website , I learned that way back in 1970 the property masqueraded as the Sunshine Motor Inn where Shirley Renfrew Partridge (Shirley Jones) and her family stopped to take a shower after being sprayed by a skunk in the Season 1 episode of The Partridge Family titled “But the Memory Lingers On.”

ScreenShot7293

In 1995’s Apollo 13 , the Safari Inn stood in for the supposed Florida-area motel where Marilyn Lovell (Kathleen Quinlan) stayed the night before her husband, Jim Lovell (Tom Hanks), embarked on his mission to the moon.

ScreenShot7252

In 2000, the motel was featured on the The Wallflowers’ sampler CD for (Breach).

ScreenShot7247

In the Season 4 episode of Six Feet Under titled “Can I Come Up Now?”, which aired in 2004, the Safari Inn was where George Sibley (James Cromwell) and Ruth Fisher (Frances Conroy) visited George’s estranged son, Kyle, (James Waterston). In the episode, the exterior of the hotel is shown only very briefly.,

ScreenShot7290

Thanks to fellow stalker Dal, I learned that the Safari Inn served as the finishing point for The Law Enforcement Desert Relay in the Season 4 episode of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation titled “Dead Ringer,” which also aired in 2004.

safari inn burbank film location

In the 2005 movie Coach Carter , the Safari Inn was where the Richmond High School basketball team stayed – and snuck out to go party – during the Bayhill Tournament Championship.

ScreenShot7272

The real life interior of two of the Safari’s room were also used in the filming.

ScreenShot7274

The Safari Inn also popped up in the Season 4 episode of Prison Break titled “The Price”, which aired in 2008, as the motel where Dr. Sara Tancredi (Sarah Wayne Callies) had a run in with Gretchen Morgan (Jodi Lyn O’Keefe – whom I did not even recognize in the role!).

ScreenShot7281

One of the hotel’s real life rooms also appeared in the episode.

ScreenShot7283

In 2009, the Safari Inn was where former child star Christine Rapp (Elizabeth Perkins) tried to hide out and wound up killing someone in the Season 8 episode of Monk titled “Mr. Monk’s Favorite Show.”

ScreenShot7276

In the Season 7 episode of Desperate Housewives titled “Pleasant Little Kingdom”, which aired in 2010, the Safari Inn was where Gabrielle Solis (Eva Longoria) said goodbye to her switched-at-birth daughter, Grace Sanchez (Cecilia Balagot).

ScreenShot7248

In 2012, the Safari Inn stood in for Sunset Boulevard’s Crystal Motel, where Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson (Kyra Sedgwick) discovered the body of Gwyneth Adler in the Season 7 episode of The Closer titled “Hostile Witness.” Only the interior of one of the Safari’s rooms appeared in the episode.

ScreenShot7262

According to IMDB , both the Season 3 episode of T.J. Hooker titled “Undercover Affair” and the Season 7 episode of Falcon Crest titled “Legacies” were filmed at the Safari Inn, but I could not find copies of either with which to verify that information.

Safari Inn (9 of 24)

And while IMDB also states that the Season 1 episode of Southland titled “Mozambique” was filmed at the Safari Inn, that information is incorrect. “Mozambique” was actually filmed at the Saharan Motor Hotel located at 7212 Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood – a site I am going to have to stalk in the near future as it is where Patrick Swayze and his wife, Lisa Nieme, lived upon first moving to Los Angeles.

ScreenShot7299

You can find me on Facebook here and on Twitter at @IAMNOTASTALKER . And be sure to check out my latest post – I FINALLY wrote a new one – about mozzarella-stuffed meatballs on my other blog, The Well-Heeled Diabetic .
