We’re not a zoo

  • Port Lympne Reserve is a breeding sanctuary for rare and endangered animals and wherever possible we aim to send animals born here to protected areas of their natural habitat where they can live free – just as they should be.
  • We always make sure that the animals come first, from enclosure design to diet, no expense is spared. We grow our own herbs and vegetables and source our meat from trustworthy suppliers.
  • We design our enclosures with the animals in mind, so there’s lots of natural foliage and furniture to provide shelter and camouflage.
  • We never lock our animals into viewing areas, so, just like in the wild, it may take some time to spot certain animals.
  • We do our best to provide a fantastic visitor experience, whilst not forgetting the primary reason we’re here – to ensure the survival of endangered animals.
TRIPADVISOR Wonderful Day Out An excellent place to visit - see the animals close up and enjoy excellent food at Baby Dolls restaurant. Friendly helpful staff everywhere around the huge park. The Safari ride is a must do. A great day out at a great price. Ken S. Written August 26, 2021
TRIPADVISOR Super Safari The reserve is large and offers a lovely day out. I highly recommend booking the safari as this was the best part of our visit. Amy Rogers. Written August 6, 2021
TRIPADVISOR An unbelievable experience We were all amazed at just how good this place is. We stayed in the hotel for two nights so got two full days in the park. Everything is so well organised and the safari drives are brilliant. You get to see so many animals close up. We have been to a South African safari and we saw more animals here than we did there. We were very luck with the weather which added to the experience. You have to give this place a try, you will love it and the kids will too. Gary F. Written October 6, 2020

Explore the UK's first safari park at Longleat

Longleat, wiltshire.

Whatsapp

Feed giraffes by hand and walk on the wildside with lemurs at this popular safari park, found in the picturesque grounds of historic Longleat House.

First opened in 1966, Longleat Safari Park was the first drive-through attraction of its kind outside Africa, and it's still running strong today. With countless species of animals and attractions like Penguin Island, Stingray Bay, Jungle Cruise and an adventure castle, it's a great day out for the entire family. Explore the animal habitats on a road tour through the park, before stepping onto the Main Square and venturing into koala habitats, outdoor playgrounds and hedge mazes.

Special events run throughout the year, including the ever-popular Festival of Lights over the Christmas period; this large display of illuminated Chinese lanterns adorns the entire parkland and adds a touch of festivity to everything. And, of course, visitors can also extend their stay in the area with a tour through Longleat House and its surrounding pleasure gardens.

Longleat Safari Park is due to re-open on Monday 15 June - make sure to check the website through the link below for availability and opening times.

All these animal and more are waiting for you! But if you’re torn about where to see them, here’s a guide! Welcome to The Dig For Kids! Today, we’re bringing you the top 10 safari parks in the UK!

Table of Contents

Longleat Safari Park

“Wind up your windows. Hide all the sandwiches. You’re going on a safari tour that’s wilder, furrier, and growlier than you ever dared imagine” is the iconic motto Longleat Safari Park goes by.

Located in the South West of England, this top-tier park is a memorable experience. An entire animal kingdom awaits you: a wolf pack, herds of rhinos, prowling cheetahs, territorial tigers, frolicking lions, a rescued circus elephant, and more!

Longleat Safari Park is most known for its famous Elizabethan house, an adventure castle, hedge maze, and of course– what all visitors rave about– a magnificent gorilla colony

Blair Drummond Safari Park

Home to more than 350 animals, most of them roaming freely, Blair Drummond Safari Park is an unforgettable attraction.

Here’s a sneak peek inside: lions, elephants, giraffes, meerkats are just a few of the majestic residents. Are you ready to take your chances with “the cheeky monkeys in the park’s famous Macque Drive-thru, walk with free roaming lemurs in Lemur Land, catch the popular sea lion and bird of prey shows, and take a boat ride to Chimp Island,” as the park advertises?

Since this safari opened its doors in 1970, it’s been one of the top parks in the UK as it takes visitors through a picturesque look at thriving wildlife populations. Lions, lemurs, and chimps aren’t the only animals here. Antelopes, camels, zebras, rhinos, and more will happily greet you.

Port Lympne Wild Animal Park

Ready to safely come face to face with one of Africa’s ferocious “big five?” Then look no further than Port Lympne Wild Animal Park in Lympne in Hythe. Here, more than 700 animals, over 90 species are thriving across 600 giant acres.

You’ll find the single largest herd of black rhinos, which are critically endangered species. Kent’s only giraffe lives here as well. But if you have your eyes out on a larger adventure, then the Dinosaur Forest may catch your attention. It will feel like you’re strolling through Jurassic Park.

Knowsley Safari Park

UK’s longest safari drive is right here at Knowsley Safari Park, clocking in at a whopping five miles stretch.

What are some to die for attractions here? The stars of the park live in the Amur Tiger Trail– two tigers by the names of Bira and Sinda. However, there is no shortage of things to see. Knowsley Safari Park stands out by its plethora of peculiar animals such as ratites, bats, and rodents.

There is also an incredibly magnificent wet safari on the park’s boating lake, which will take you rowing and allow you to see all the amazing species that call Knowsley Safari Park their home. As you explore, you’ll see everything from cheeky meerkats, formidable buffaloes, graceful wildebeest and zebra, to the majestic lion pride. If you’re lucky enough that your trip coincides with the school holidays, the park offers a Baboon Bus.

www.knowsleysafariexperience.co.uk

Woburn Safari Park

Want to step out of the car and the “Baboon Bus” as the previous park offered? At Woburn Safari Park in Bedfordshire, your adventure is on foot. And you can do more than walking on the wild side of nature, you can ride the “Great Woburn Railway” or take a ride in one of their swan boats.

It will feel like you have left the UK and stepped into the Savannah Grasslands. Visit the African Forest, the Northern Plains, the Kingdom of the Carnivores, and the Giraffe Junction to observe monkeys, rhinos, zebras, giraffes, bison, and lions in their natural habitat. On foot, you can witness first hand the magnificence and the grandeur of giant elephants walking in front of you, as well as walk among deers, wave back to meerkats, and feed the sea lions.

Right from the comfort of your car, start by viewing bison and zebras grazing at the Northern Plains, then drive to the Savannah Grasslands and see rhinos living the good life, head to the African Forest to laugh at the antics of the energetic monkeys who are known to be mischievous in the woodlands, and finally, see tigers prowl in the Kingdom of the Carnivores.

Cotswold Wildlife Park

We have one word for you…ostriches!

At Cotswold Wildlife Park, located in Oxfordshire, you’ll get a front row to see ostriches roaming freely, but that’s not all you should focus on. Every day, the park hosts penguin talks. And every month, you’ll find plenty of monthly events. Offering no shortage of activities, the park offers annual competitions.

Dive deep enough in the park and you’ll find their mischievous lion pride, lazing around in the sun. Just like your average cat, only a lot bigger and more ferocious.

Knepp Wildland Safari

Spread out across an impressive 3,500 acres of Sussex, Knepp Wildland Safari, one of the largest rewilding projects in lowland Europe is one unforgettable experience.

Herds of animals, birds, mammals, butterflies, reptiles, and beetles, and even entire gardens of plants and fungi await. Whether you’re there to take courses on photography, looking to check out the animals, want to do some tree reading, or to take a boat that will take you on a scenic ride

https://www.kneppsafaris.co.uk/

Wingham Wildlife Park

Wingham Wildlife Park offers anything from raccoons to dinosaurs, and it’s right here in the UK for all to see. What can you expect to see? A long way from its opening in 1986 when the park just had a small collection of aviary birds, waterfowl, and a tea room, today, there are hundreds of species roaming around.

Now, you’ll find a big cat row, where the likes of pumas, jaguars, cheetahs, caracals, and unique, smaller species of cat such as Scottish wildcats roam. Here for the tigers? You’ll find them a little deeper in the tiger enclosure.

When you have your fill of watching majestic cats, head to the wolf enclosure, or is the Chimp House more your taste? Other attractions include the Reptile House where you can view the likes of rhinoceros iguanas or check out the Penguin Pool, which speaks for itself.

Animals aren’t the only guests here after hours– you can be too! Wingham offers a unique experience where you can be a keeper for a day. There are VIP tours where keepers walk you through the park and take you through each animal’s history, arrival, and relationships.

https://winghamwildlifepark.co.uk/

Shepreth Wildlife Park

Ever fed a ring-tailed lemur by hands? Came face to face with a tiger? Pet an alpaca?

In 1984, Shepreth Wildlife Park opened its doors as a much needed refuge for injured and orphaned animals. Now, there are more than 100 species thriving there. From alpacas to lemurs, Shepreth Wildlife Park has them!

The natural grounds offer warm tropical exhibits, animal encounter sessions, outdoor play zones, demonstrations, and keeper talks. Throughout the day, you won’t be able to go through the large number of talks the park offers, each focusing on a different animal. Throughout the month, keep up with their superb events such as hedgehog day. And if you’re looking to take something home from the park, stop by the gift shop or talk to one of the keepers about the animals available for adoption!

https://sheprethwildlifepark.co.uk/

West Midland Safari Park

Located in Bewdley, Worcestershire, West Midland Safari Park roared its way into becoming one of the leading safari parks in all of the UK. This is the spot to head to when you’re looking to stand face to face with some of the world’s most famous elusive animals.

The drive-through isn’t the only attraction. The park offers a myriad of discovery trails, a theme park, and plenty of fun areas. Check out adorable penguins at the Discovery Trail, marvel at the beauty of the sea creatures that call West Midland Safari Park home, check out the reptiles and arachnids exhibits, and finally, stop by the Sea Lion Theatre to round off your amazing experience with some wholesome sea lions.

Ready For A Wild Day Out? 6 Of The Best Safari Parks In The UK

Sharing is caring!

Looking for something a little different to do this weekend or in the upcoming school holidays ?

Once in a while, you may be craving an escape from the capital.

Whether that’s a fun day out or a staycation, there are some fantastic safari parks in the UK, many of them near London , accessible by train, coach and car.

What are Safari Parks?

Safari parks are drive-through attractions rather than traditional zoo experiences. They mimic that of a wild safari in exotic destinations like Africa.

At some parks, you drive your car around the safari; some have trucks provided for you, and others have larger vehicles with a driver where you can sit back, relax and enjoy the safari.

Often, it’s best to bring your car because many UK safari parks are drive-around only. Many UK safari parks also have on-site accommodation if you’re travelling further afield.

We’ve taken the kids to a few over the years and we find a day trip to a safari park a great way to blend education and entertainment.

Best places to go in safari in the world

When thinking about the best place to go on safari, many of us conjure up images of the Serengeti, Kenya or Botswana and sunrise jeep tours spotting the Big Five (lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants and buffalos).

Safari tours are a bucket-list experience, allowing tourists to get close to animals in their natural habitat and enjoy truly awe-inspiring scenery. Local guides will not only enrich your understanding of the animals and their habits but will also often be able to give unique insights into local culture.

From taking in the awe-inspiring surroundings of Serengeti National Park in Africa to exotic bird-watching Kaziranga National Park and tiger-spotting in India's Satpura Tiger Reserve, these are the 32 best places to go on safari in Africa, India and beyond...

Best places to go on safari around the world

Kruger national park, south africa.

Kruger National Park, South Africa

Perhaps the most famous safari park in the world, Kruger National Park has wide appeal. It's home to all of the Big Five with roads that are easy to navigate, making it a good choice for families and those with less safari experience. The landscape is rich and diverse, with impressive mountains, bush plains and lush, tropical forests making up its varied terrain.

Yala National Park, Sri Lanka

Yala National Park, Sri Lanka

Yala National Park is a vast area of forest, grassy plains and lagoons in southwest Sri Lanka and is home to 44 varieties of mammals and 215 bird species. Organising a tour from the nearby towns of Kataragama or Tissamaharama is easy, with hotels and hostels offering packages at sunrise and sunset. Spot leopards, elephants, water buffalo and vibrant exotic birds as you crawl around the huge National Park on a guided tour.

Chobe National Park, Botswana

Chobe National Park, Botswana

Botswana is another popular safari destination thanks to its incredible natural wildlife, high-quality camps and the opportunities for some of the most stunning water-based safari trips in the world, including the Chobe River. Chobe Natural Park has the world's largest concentration of elephants, as well as buffaloes, giraffes, zebras and big cats. Take a  mokoro  (a dugout canoe) through the wetlands to see the area from a different perspective and take in the myriad of plant species, birds, fish and reptiles that inhabit the swaps.

Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

Another safari park often associated with the Big Five - lions, leopards, rhinoceros, elephants and buffalos - is the Serengeti on Tanzania’s northern circuit. The area is particularly known for its lion population and all-around incredible wildlife.

Calimani Park, Romania

Calimani Park, Romania

European safari destinations are a lot less well-known, but that doesn't mean you can't have some incredible experiences without leaving the continent. Calimani Park in Romania is considered one of Europe's last great wildernesses, its mountainous terrain filled with dense forest and incredible wildlife. Visit at dawn or dusk and you're likely to spot wolves, stags, eagles and even the elusive wild cat, the Eurasian lynx.

Etosha National Park, Africa

Etosha National Park, Africa

Etosha National Park is situated in northwestern Namibia and is one of the biggest national parks in Africa. The name 'Etosha' closely translates to 'Great White Place' and offers something different from the usual African safari, with the park largely consisting of dried-out clay pans. Here, wildlife including elephants, giraffes, zebras, pangolins, and rhinos gather around the vast watering holes.

Hemis National Park, India

Hemis National Park, India

Hemis National Park is an incredibly unique national park, situated at a high altitude, north of the Himalayas on the banks of the Indus River. The largely unspoilt area houses some unusual wildlife, such as the Tibetan wolf and blue sheep, and majestic and colourful birds of prey. It's also home to the highest amount of snow leopards compared to any other area in the world.

Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya

Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya

Kenya’s Masai Mara National Reserve is the endpoint for the 'Great Migration', which sees millions of wild animals cross the Mara River from the Serengeti annually in an incredible natural spectacle. The local Maasai communities play a big role in tourism, offering guided bush walks to learn about local culture and wildlife.

Satpura National Park, India

Satpura National Park, India

Satpura National Park is also known as Satpura Tiger Reserve thanks to its large concentration of Bengal tigers. Located in Madhya Pradesh, it's home to 52 different mammal species and 31 reptiles - but what makes this densely populated national park so attractive is that it's off the tourist trail, so you're more likely to get a more authentic experience without the constant flash of cameras.

Madikwe Game Reserve, South Africa

Madikwe Game Reserve, South Africa

Touted as a popular alternative to the Krueger National Park in South Africa, Madikwe Game Reserve still has rich biodiversity and is a popular place to spot the Big Five. Uluru and the Outback, Australia

Uluru and the Outback, Australia

Australia has an almost otherworldly feel thanks to its vast, arid landscapes and unique plant and wildlife conditions (almost looking like a film location spot ). The Uluru, also known as Ayers Rock, is a sandstone monolith in the heart of the Northern Territory’s Red Centre, where you'll find its typical, arid landscapes. Although some of the Uluru National Park is off-limits, the area around Uluru is a great way to experience the Outback, with guided tours that see the famous rock at sunrise or sunset. Spot dingos, incredible reptiles like thorny devils and red kangaroos.

Ranthambore National Park, India

Sasan Gir National Park, India

Ranthambore is one of the most famous national parks in India, with visitors travelling from far and wide to catch a glimpse of its Royal Bengal tigers. There are also over 320 species of birds, with some of the most vibrant in the world. Sunset at Ranthambore Fort is also a spectacle in its own right.

Maria Island National Park, Tasmania

Tasmania

Tasmania is home to 19 national parks full of wildlife enjoying the vastly unspoiled landscapes. Maria Island National Park is a quick ferry ride away from the coastal town of Triabunna and boasts incredible scenery as well as wildlife like Tasmanian devils, Cape Barren geese, kangaroos and wallabies - and the beauty of this small island is that there are no natural predators, meaning the animals are less likely to hide.

Kakadu National Park, Australia

Kakadu National Park, Australia

Another beautiful safari destination to put on your list is Kakadu National Park, situated in Australia’s Northern Territory. Close to the small city of Darwin, this enormous natural park is filled with wildlife, ancient ruins, incredible rock formations and lush plants. Local companies run safari tours throughout the year, often ending with a traditional campfire bush food cook-up at sunset.

Pench National Park, India

Pench National Park, India

Knowing that Pench National Park is the inspiration for  The Jungle Book is all the convincing we need to visit, with a huge range of wildlife to discover, including real-life Baloo, Akela and Rashka - the sloth bear, Indian wolf and female Indian wolf. Situated at the foot of the Satpura Hills, the wild landscapes encompass dense jungle, scenic rivers and peaceful forests. Turia Gate is the usual starting point for safari tours of the wildlife reserve.

Queen Elizabeth National Park, Uganda

Queen Elizabeth National Park, Uganda

Celebrated for its diversity, the Queen Elizabeth National Park is made up of forests, lakes and savannas. Expect to see a diverse range of animals including elephants, gorillas and chimpanzees. It's best known, however, for its lions that are often spotted climbing trees - not a sight for the faint-hearted (and maybe not one of the most relaxing holiday destinations ).

Kangaroo Island, Australia

Kangaroo Island, Australia

Kangaroo Island is a wildlife sanctuary that wasn't inhabited until the 19th century. Nowadays you can stay in one of the island's sustainable hotels and enjoy incredible wildlife on your doorstep, including possums, platypuses and kangaroos enjoying the diverse landscape.

Bandhavgarh National Park, India

Bandhavgarh National Park, India

Bandhavgarh National Park is spread over the Vindhya hills in Madhya Pradesh and is one of the most popular national parks in the country. Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe

Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe

Mana Pools National Park, Zimbabwe

Mana Pools National Park, Zimbabwe

Laikipia Higlands, Kenya

Laikipia, Kenya

Located in central Kenya, the Laikipia highlands are 250 kilometres north-west of Nairobi and offer a quieter alternative to some of the more well-known safari parks in Kenya. This area is also home to the Big Five and is particularly famous for its black rhinos.

Sasan Gir National Park, India

You'll also see rare animals like chital deer and Gir foxes, as well as the Egyptian vulture in this peaceful and colourful national park.

Madikwe Game Reserve, South Africa

Characterised by its rust-orange sand and epic hills, Madikwe Game Reserve is a great option for families. Not only is it malaria-free but its landscapes are also easy to navigate and there's a good chance of seeing the Big Five.

Longleat Safari Park, Bath

Bergslagen Forest, Sweden

Bergslagen Forest, Sweden

Bergslagen Forest in central Sweden offers total escapism with guided tours where you'll hike, canoe and camp in the wild. During a guided tour of the woods and the Bergslagen lakes, you'll spot moose, lynx, beavers and wolves in the wild. These animals are considered passive and shy, so they pose less of a threat to humans, though it's worth adding tours should be carried out with the help of a trained guide.

Zimbabwe - a world of wonders.

Zimbabwe is a landlocked country in southern Africa lying between the Limpopo and Zambezi Rivers and known for its dramatic landscape and diverse wildlife, much of it within parks, reserves and safari areas. The wonders of the landscape are matched by a variety and density of wildlife comparable with the world’s best, and this safari explores some of Zimbabwe’s safari hot spots.

Hwange National Park , where The Hide is located, is the largest wildlife reserve in Zimbabwe, occupying roughly 14,650 sq. km. Visitors to Hwange are guaranteed to see an incredible range of wildlife, with over 100 species of mammals and nearly 400 bird species recorded.

Mana Pools National Park is a beautiful 2,196 sq. km wildlife conservation area in northern Zimbabwe. Mana means “four” in Shona, (one of the main vernacular languages in Zimbabwe) and it refers to the number of large permanent pools left by the Zambezi River as it flows into the flood plain, and it is here that you will find John’s Camp.

Itinerary of Wild Zimbabwe day by day

safari parks south uk

Day 1 - 3: The Hide

The Hide is situated on its own private concession, a 5 km square area in Zimbabwe’s largest national park Hwange, meaning the range of activities on offer is wider and more exciting. During the course of your stay, you can do as much or as little as you like! A walking safari in the bush with your guide where you’ll discover it’s less about the Big Five and more about making a connection that’s personal. A game drive into the evening after a well-deserved sundowner gives one the chance to experience wild nocturnal activity that you don’t get the chance to see elsewhere. The scope and scale of Hwange’s wildlife is such that there is generally always something to see. There is no limit on the number of activities you can do, so if you can’t sit still, you could do an early morning walk followed by a morning drive after breakfast. In the afternoon you could head out again, stopping off for a sundowner, followed by a night-drive back to camp.

Day 4 - 7: John’s Camp

John's Camp, Mana Pools National Park is next on the Ultimate Zimbabwe Safari. A typical day on safari at John's Camp starts with a wakeup call just before sunrise for a quick light breakfast before heading out for your activity, either a walking safari, exploring the magical wonders of Mana Pools or game drive into the wilderness. Once back in camp, and after a hearty meal, you can choose to have a siesta before the next game drive. Head out again for an afternoon of game viewing as the day cools down, giving you a chance to see the animals unwind as well as the opportunity to see some nocturnal wildlife before your return. Sundowners are always a must and can be enjoyed while out on your afternoon game drive or back in camp. No visit to Zimbabwe would be complete without a trip to Mana Pools!
