How to Search a Webpage for Specific Text in Safari on iPhone and iPad

On iPhone and iPad , the way you search within a webpage in Safari isn't so obvious. There are two different methods you can use in Apple's browser, both of which are described below. Once you've given them a shot, they'll become second nature.

How to Search Within a Webpage Using Safari's Smart Search Bar

Launch Safari browser on your ‌iPhone‌ or ‌iPad‌
Navigate to the page that you want to search.

Scroll down the Smart Search results for the section called On This Page . Alongside it you'll see the number of matches for your search term. Tap the Find [your search term] option below it.
Safari will jump to the first instance of the word or phrase you search for on the webpage and highlight it in yellow. You will also see the matching result above the onscreen keyboard. Use the up/down arrow buttons to jump to each successive instance of your search term on the current page.

How to Search Within a Webpage Using Safari's Share Sheet

Launch Safari browser on your ‌iPhone‌ or ‌iPad‌.

Scroll past the Share options to the Action menu and select Find on Page .
Type the word or phrase you're looking for in the search field and tap Search . Safari will jump to the first instance of your search term on the webpage and highlight it in yellow. You will also see the matching result above the onscreen keyboard. Use the up/down arrow buttons to jump to each successive instance of your search term on the current page.

To much scams…please READ!

So whenever I use this app/ Safari it get these trackers and scammers to get my location and this is making me nervous. I installed ad blocker I think it’s called and I blocked some trackers which made me feel better. Every time you search something you usually get a scam or tracker. I do not like when people track me down. I rarely use this app because of the scams and risks. I think it is an OK app in general because it’s the people making these small BAD websites. The reason I gave it 4 stars is because it could use work but it is pretty much like google. I use google way more because I feel like it is much safer than safari. I could be wrong… Safari could use some work with all these BAD websites. Can you block these bad websites? I would love to block these websites cause they are scary. Also watch out for nine anime/ 9anime websites… I searched up 9anime on safari and clicked a link. It looked safe but then these inappropriate pop ups kept coming. I immediately got off. I checked my ‘ How much trackers we have prevented’ or whatever it’s called it said that it had prevented 14 trackers from getting my IP address. This was good and bad news. I’m glad that safari and google can prevent these trackers but it is bad because this is dangerous. BE CAREFUL ON SAFARI!!!

Your Underrated Prince, Safari

In my humble opinion, Safari is the underrated king among multiple web browsers on the market. I was a PC devotee from ‘95 to ‘16, since then, it’s been all Tim Cook 🍎 all the time. My only regret is not purchasing a smartphone back in ‘07 from Steve Jobs. Presently, I own an iPhone 6s Plus in rose gold (2016), iPad Mini (2016), iPad Pro (2019) & MacBook (2018) in rose gold with matching Beats By Dre headphones. All four are set up with Safari, not Chrome, TOR, Brave, Edge, or DDGo. I love the ability to quickly save favorites, add to reading list & share content to other platforms. My favorites are alphabetized for quick reference & the reading list keeps all articles & pages in chronological order for quick recall. Also, I learned Safari quickly because it’s extremely user friendly. The browser helped my navigation of Apple when switching from PC. I’ll admit, learning MacBook isn’t easy, but, Safari keeps things familiar for me on the desktop. When lost, just go back to Safari & start over. It’s surprising no one in tech media mentions Safari more often as a go to source for navigating the internet. Chrome is the reigning king of, Land Of Browsers, without an heir apparent. I nominate Safari as the prince with future king potential. Citizens of Land Of Browsers don’t like their chrome-plated dirty laundry aired, sold or tracked.

I have been using this for years and had no problems with it. I ran over my phone with my lawn mower and was without my phone for over a year due to having to fight with the insurance company. However when I finally got a lawyer involved the insurance company finally replaced it for me. I DID not lose anything and I mean anything. I like the cards better because they are easier to clear out. You have to back everything up to your cloud every day or every other day so that you don’t have to worry about losing anything. As I always make sure that I back everything up just in case. It is not apples fault if you lose your any of your information it is yours for not backing up your phone to your cloud. So most of the people who write bad reviews either don’t back up or they just don’t or they just don’t care. Apple doesn’t charge a lot to add more space to your cloud so there is no reason why you can’t back you things. This is better than anything that google has. By far. If you want your information used by third parties then use google’s and quit complaining. You can change your browser in safari so that you don’t have to use them get with it you bad reviews and learn how to use safari.

How to search website content from within Safari

You can quickly find all occurrences of a search term on the current web page

So Google has just returned a list of websites, and underneath the top one you can see precisely the information you want. Or rather, you can see the start of it and have to click to get to the page to find the rest.

But then you're on the page and for the life of you, you simply cannot find the same text that Google just showed you on the results page. Unfortunately, one possibility is that it isn't there — Google may have shown you a cache of an older version of the page.

Even when it is there, though, it can be hard to spot because of the design of the page or because of the sheer tonnage of text to scroll through. That's where the simplest and probably most overlooked Safari feature comes in.

As it happens, it's mostly overlooked on the Mac . If there were an iOS feature we'd appreciate seeing borrowed by macOS , it would be On This Page .

Using On This Page on iOS

Go to any site in Safari on iPhone or iPad
Tap in the address bar as if you were about to go somewhere else
Type a search term, but do not press Enter
Swipe up from about midway down the screen to dismiss the keyboard
Scroll down to the On This Page heading

If the search term you're looking for is anywhere on that site's current page, it will be listed along with how many times it's there. If it isn't on the page, the heading changes to On This Page (no matches) , and you know to move on with your life.

How to search through the results on iOS

When there are one or more occurrences of your search term, you can tap on the line under the heading to go to the first of them. If you searched for the word "banana," for instance, that line will read Find "bananas" and you can just tap on it.

Tapping this find line dismisses all the other search results, such as Bookmarks, and displays the page unfettered by anything but the title bar — and a new search bar. Plus the page will have been scrolled to where the first occurrence is.

What's more, that first occurrence will be highlighted in yellow. Whether it's the only one or there are many, though, there's a bar at the foot of the screen giving you quick access to any others.

Left to right, this bottom bar begins with a Done button for when you're finished. It then shows a magnifying glass, your search term, and a count of how many occurrences you've looked at.

Then there are also up and down arrows to step you through each occurrence. Each time you tap on an arrow, the page jumps to the next spot where your search term is, and again highlights it in yellow.

It's fast and simple, but it gets missed because On This Page is usually hidden by the on-screen keyboard. Then when you're using it, it's spectacularly easy to tap in just the wrong place and dismiss the entire search.

To be fair, the Mac's equivalent doesn't go away quite so readily. It's just otherwise exactly the same functionality — in a completely different place.

How to search within a site on the Mac

In Safari on your Mac, go to a website
Click Command-F , or
Choose Edit , Find , Find... from the menus
Type in a search term

On the Mac, the moment you've typed something that can be found on the page, the Mac highlights it immediately. It doesn't wait.

It highlights the first occurrence in yellow — and all other occurrences in white. So you can scroll and see where they all are, or you can read the first and step through the rest one by one.

To step through, you use the arrow buttons on the search bar that you've just entered text into. Where the iPhone has those as up and down arrows, the Mac has them as left and right.

One oddity is that sometimes, depending on the website, Safari can get confused over which is the "first" occurrence of a search term. It will always highlight them all, but it can jump first to one that's toward the end of the page.

Reading many search results

Since you are so clearly shown where each search result is, it would be great to be able to tab through them, but you can't. Either you click the tiny arrows, or you scroll the page and read the white labels.

As soon as you click on any one of those labels, it and all others vanish immediately. So if, say, you want to select and copy multiple sections of the website page, you will have to repeat the search over and over.

The search bar remains on screen — in the current tab, not any of the others — so repeating the search means clicking back in it. The search term you typed will be highlighted, ready for you to replace it with something else, but you can just hit Return and Safari will re-highlight all the results.

Where the Mac wins

The Mac does react when you click in the address bar and it does offer you options, they just don't include the On This Page feature. It would be great if it did, or if you could set it so that you saw search results as well as Favorites, or Frequently Visited, pages.

However, the Mac version of in-Safari searches does offer one more feature than the iOS one. On iOS, Safari shows you all occurrences of whatever you look for, wherever it is on the page — even if it's within another word.

On the Mac, the same thing is the default, but you can change it at any time. Right next to where you type the search term, there's a drop down menu. It defaults to Contains , but you can change it to Begins with .

Searching on Safari

It's not as if there is an incredibly powerful regex-style search feature in Safari on either iOS or macOS. But the search feature is as simple as it is obscure.

Once you know it's there, you will find yourself using it repeatedly. Although speaking of which, it would be handy to have a Unix- or Terminal-style ability to tap a key and be searching for the previous item you looked for, or the one before that, or before that.

How to use Safari on a Mac

Safari is the web browser app bundled with all Macs as part of macOS. You don’t have to use it – if you prefer to use Chrome or Firefox, for example, you can install those apps for your web surfing needs. But in our experience, Safari is a good option – and as you can see from our round-up of best web browser apps for the Mac , it’s pretty much the best you can get.

If you are new to Safari this article will help you find your way around the app. And if you are a seasoned Safari user we will reveal a few Safari tips and tricks that you might not know, including some of the fab new features in Safari 11, the latest version of Safari for Mac.

How to get the latest version of Safari for Mac

First things first. You will want to make sure you have the latest version of Safari. At the time of writing the most up-to-date version is Safari 11.1.

Here’s how to find out which version of Safari you are running:

Open Safari.
Click on Safari > About Safari in the menu.
The resulting window will reveal the version number.

As long as your copy of MacOS – the Mac operating system – is up to date your copy of Safari should be because Safari is bundled as part of an operating system update.

However, you don’t have to be using the latest version of macOS to have the latest version of Safari. Apple is bundling Safari 11 with High Sierra, Sierra and El Capitan versions of the Mac OS. Now that you have the latest version of Safari you can start enjoying some of the new features that we will discuss below.

Safari basics

If you are a surfing novice you might want to familiarise yourself with these tips.

We’ll start off with the basics, such as how to get into Safari, how to search, and other useful pointers. You can skip this bit if you aren’t a Safari beginner, there are plenty of tips below that you might find useful.

You can find Safari in the Dock at the bottom of your Mac’s screen. Its icon looks like a compass.

How to use Safari

The big bar at the top of the Safari window is where you can enter a website URL or a search term to either take you directly to a website, or to a list of pages that match your query.

It will automatically search in Google (but you can change it so it defaults to another search engine).

You rarely have to enter a complete URL for a website. Once you have visited a site once you only need to type a few letters of its name and it will autofill the rest of the URL.

For example, type: ‘Face’ and it will autofill the rest of the URL and when you press enter it will take you straight to Facebook.

How to make it easy to find your favourite sites in Safari

There are lots of ways of making it easy to get to websites you frequently visit.

When you open a new tab (see below for details of how to do that) you will see your Favourites view including Frequently Visited Sites. You could also choose to see a Top Sites view, set a Homepage, just see an empty page, or have the Same Page show up. These are all options you can access in Safari > Preferences > General. Just click on the menu beside New tabs open with.

If you choose the Top Sites view you can adjust it to show 6, 12 or 24 sites. To add and remove Top Sites hover over the preview until you see an x and a pin icon. Pin those sites you wish to keep and click x on those you don’t image you will want to find again. The sites that appear in Top Sites tend to be those you visit most frequently.

You can choose one of these views for every time you open a new Safari window.

How to Pin a site in Safari

In Safari you can also ‘Pin’ favourite sites to the menu bar – a simple way of adding a shortcut to Facebook, YouTube or any site you visit frequently.

When you Pin a site you will see a small icon representing that site on the left of your tabs.

To Pin a particular web page right- or control-click on the tab and choose Pin Tab. Then it’s very easy to go straight to that site.

Using tabs in Safari

Back to tabs. You can open multiple tabs in a Safari window, this means that rather than having a different Safari window open for every website you are on, you can just have one Safari window open and multiple pages accessible through that.

To open a new tab press Command + T.

There are two ways that you can see a preview of the different tabs you have open:

You can see a short summary of the name of the web page on the tabs themselves. This might be sufficient if you only have one or two tabs open, but once you have more than eight you’ll probably find the summary is too short to be useful.
Or, you can click on the icon that looks like two boxes on the right of the search/URL box. This will show a thumbnail view of all the web pages you have open.

While we’re on the subject of Tabs, you can close a single tab just by hovering over the tab and clicking on the x that shows up in the corner of that tab.

It’s also possible to close all but one tab. Just hold down the Option/Alt key when you click on the x to get rid of all the other tabs that are open, except for the page on that tab.

How to tell which Safari tabs are playing audio

Not everyone wants to surf the web in silence though. There is lots of very worthy audio and video content available on the web and no doubt many surfers wouldn’t want to miss out on that.

The problem is when you have multiple web pages open and more than one of them is blaring out audio.

Luckily there is another Safari tip to fix that.

You can identify which of your open tabs is playing audio by the speaker symbol that appears in the far right of the Safari tab associated with that web page.

It’s possible to mute the audio with a single click on the speaker symbol without even opening the tab.

And if more than one Safari webpage is playing audio you can choose to mute them all at once. Just click on the speaker symbol in the URL bar and choose Mute all Tabs.

Alternatively, you can Option/Alt-click on the speaker icon of the tab you do wish to listen to and mute the audio on all the other tabs.

How to reopen all windows from the last session

Here’s another useful tip. You can easily reopen all the tabs you had open last time you were using Safari.

Click History > Reopen All Windows from Last Session to quickly recover all the windows you were recently looking at. You might also find this helpful: How to export bookmarks from Chrome to Safari

How to show the full URL in Safari

Another handy Safari tip. In Yosemite Safari stopped showing the whole URL – a feature designed to help avoid users being taken in by phishing scams, wherein the URL is obfuscated. In other words, if you’re visiting https://macworld.co.uk/this/page/that/page then all you’ll see in the address bar is macworld.co.uk.

If this isn’t what you want, perhaps you want to see the full URL of the article you are reading, you can change things so that the whole URL is shown.

Open Safari’s preferences dialog box (Cmd+,) then click the Advanced icon and put a check alongside Show Full Website Address.

How to change how you view websites in Safari

One of our favourite features in Safari 11 is the extra control we have over the web. You can tweak the settings of specific websites so that they suit you for example.

How to change the font size on a website

You can tweak your settings so that when you visit a specific site the images and text are bigger – perfect if you are frustrated to find that the text on a favourite website is a bit too small for your eyes.

Here’s how to enlarge (or reduce) the font size on a particular website so that it stays that size whether you visit:

Go to Safari > Preferences.
Click on the Websites tab.
Click on Page Zoom.
Find the site you want to customise (any site you have open or have recently visited will be listed here).
Choose a number bigger or smaller than 100% depending on how large you want the text and images to be.

You can do this on a per website basis, or if you frequently find that the text on websites is too small for you, you can choose to default to the percentage that suits you wherever you go on the web. Note that not all websites are created the same so some will naturally have larger type than others.

To choose the zoom percentage for all websites, click in the drop down box beside “When visiting other websites”.

Another benefit of having access to these controls that allow you to change the way you view the web is that it enables you to stop seeing ads and auto-playing videos. We’ll look at that below.

How to stop ads and auto-playing videos in Safari

Another enticing feature of Safari is the way you can choose to adjust the settings so that you never see another ad or auto-playing video again. We’ll look at how to do that next.

How to stop autoplay audio and video in Safari

Perhaps you are frustrated by auto-playing video blaring out every time you visit a website.

With Safari 11 you can disable autoplay video, so you will never again have to hear voices while you are browsing the web. Here’s what to do:

Open the offending website.
Click on Safari > Settings for This Website (or right-click the URL box and select Settings for This Website).
Allow All Auto-Play
Stop Media with Sound
Never Auto-Play

Stop Media with Sounds is the default option, and it will essentially stop any video from starting if the sound is set to be on. If the video is set to play silently it will still run but you won’t hear it, unless you choose to.

If you would rather not let auto-playing video play, you can choose Never Auto-Play.

Remember that if you adjust the settings this way it will only apply to autoplay videos on that website. If you’d like to never see an autoplaying video again follow these steps:

Go to Safari > Preferences and click on Websites.

And there is an option below to choose the same settings “When visiting other websites”.

How to stop seeing ads on websites in Safari

While ads pay a part of our wage, we realise that some ads can really reduce the enjoyment of web browsing. Usually these are ads that have something wrong with the way they have been coded and aren’t behaving as intended, or even worse they are spam ads that have crept onto the ad networks. We are honestly as frustrated as you are!

One of the big changes Apple bought to Safari 11 was the ability to really manage the ads that you see – this was part of Apple’s effort to make the web work better. Effectively, if Apple can remove ads that aren’t behaving as intended and are jamming up page loading times and the like, then Safari will perform quicker, which means that the surfer has a better time surfing.

There are a few ways you can take advantage of these anti-ad related features in Safari 11.

One way is to choose to surf the web – or certain pages – in Reader mode.

Reader mode is a way of viewing webpages that Apple introduced back in 2010 in Safari 5. Reader displays just the text and images from a webpage, without any of the other page furniture. We think it is a bit like reading a Word document or a PDF. The feature hasn’t changed much over the years, but in Safari 11 it’s became possible to choose for a site to always be viewed in Reader Mode.

First, here’s how to view a site in Reader mode:

Click on the stack of lines to the left of the URL bar.
This will automatically change the webpage to Reader view.
Click on the stack of lines to turn Reader view off.

It’s worth checking how a site appears in this mode before switching over to it because not all sites implement it particularly well (sometimes you will find that an article stops abruptly because only one page has been carried into Reader view). Some sites don’t have a Reader view at all (such as Apple, for example).

And here is how to customise your settings so that whenever you visit that site the pages are viewed in Reader mode:

Click on Reader.
Find the site you want to customise (any site you have open, or have recently visited will be listed here).
Toggle the drop-down menu beside that site to On.

A quicker way to do this is to right-click or control-click on the stack of lines beside the URL and choose Use Reader Automatically.

Or, as long as you are on the website you wish to change the setting for, you can click on Safari > Settings for this Website, and choose Use Reader When Available.

How to surf in private using Safari

Another useful feature in Safari is the option to use a private browsing window. This doesn’t just keep your browsing habits private from someone else who has access to your Mac, it also means that you are incognito – in other words even the websites you are visiting don’t have any information about you.

Go to Safari > File > New Private Window (or shift-cmd-n). You can tell if a window is private because the search bar will be grey. Any new tabs you open in this window will be private.

Alternatively, to open a Private Browsing window you can click shift, command and N.

You can tell it’s a private window because the URL field will be greyed out.

Hold down Option/Alt while picking Private Browsing to quickly switch it on and bypass the ‘Do you want to switch on Private Browsing?’ alert window if you happen to see it frequently. We have a complete guide to private browsing on Safari here .

For even more privacy, you can choose to always search with privacy-obsessed DuckDuckGo as your default search engine. Go to Safari > Preferences > Search, and click on the Search Engine. Then select Duck Duck Go from the Search Engine dropdown list. You can choose from Google, Bing, Yahoo or DuckDuckGo.

How to delete your histroy in Safari

If you didn’t search using a private browsing window you can still delete your history and evidence of what you were up to.

Click on History.
Scroll down and click on Clear History.
You can choose to clear history for Today, the last hour, today and yesterday, or all history.
You’ll see a warning that Clearing history will remove related cookies and other website data. Basically this is warning you that if you go ahead and Clear History you may find that you have to log onto websites, or shopping cart information may disappear.
If you are happy with that then click on Clear history.

How to delete cookies in Safari

Another new feature that came in Safari 11 was the introduction of privacy protection, a feature that’ll stop those annoying Amazon adverts showing you products after you’ve bought them.

Safari actively tries to block the cross-site tracking data that powers targeted adverts. While it won’t completely stop it, it should have a noticeable effect when using the browser.

According to Apple this isn’t an attempt to block ads, but rather to protect your privacy.

This means that you should no longer need to delete cookies if you want to stop seeing targeted ads (cookies have also been known to affect the price for goods if you have previously shown an interest in a product so deleting cookies could avoid such practices).

If you want to go a step further regarding cookies in Safari 11 there are some preferences changes you can make.

Beside Website tracking click on Ask websites not to track me.
Beside Cookies and website data click on Block all cookies.

If you aren’t using Safari 11 you can still delete cookies.

Click on the Privacy tab.
Click on Remove All Website Data…

If you have an iPhone or other iOS device with iOS 14 or 13, follow these steps to use Safari Find on Page:

Begin by opening Safari and browsing to a website.

Tap the action box at the bottom center of the screen (the box with the arrow coming out of it).

Swipe up on the pop-up sheet.

Tap Find on Page .

In the search bar, type the text you want to find.

If the text you entered is on the page, the first use of it is highlighted.
Use the arrow keys above the keyboard to move forward and backward through every instance of your search term on the page.

Tap the X in the search bar to search for a new word or phrase.

Tap Done when you're finished.

How to Use Safari Find on Page in iOS 9 - iOS 12

For an iPhone or other iOS device running iOS 9 through iOS 12, follow these steps:

Open Safari and browse to a website.

Swipe through the second row of icons. Tap Find on Page .

Type the text you want to find in the search bar.

If the text you searched for is found, its first use is highlighted.

Use the arrow keys next to the search box to move through every use of the search term on the page.

Tap the X in the search bar to enter a new word or phrase.

How to Use Safari Find on Page in iOS 7 and 8

The following steps work are the only way to use Safari's Find on Page feature on iOS 7 and 8 :

Begin by opening the Safari app and browsing to a website

Once the site is loaded in Safari, tap the address bar at the top of the Safari window.

In that address bar, type the text you want to search for on the page.

When you do that, a number of things happen:

In the address bar, URLs may be suggested based on your browsing history .
Beneath that, the Top Hits section offers additional suggestions.
The Suggested Website is delivered by Apple based on your Safari settings (you can tweak these in Settings > Safari > Search ).
After that are a set of suggested searches from Google (or your default search engine), followed by matching sites from your bookmarks and search history.

But where's Find on Page? In most cases, it's hidden off the bottom of the screen, either by the onscreen keyboard or by the list of suggested results and searches. Swipe all the way to the end of the screen and you'll see a section titled On This Page . The number next to the header indicates how many times the text you searched for appears on this page.

Tap Find to see all uses of your search word on the page.

The arrow keys move you through the uses of the word on the page. The X icon lets you clear the current search and perform a new one.

Tap Done when you're finished searching.

How to Use Safari Find on Page in iOS 4-6

In these earlier versions of the iOS, the process is a bit different:

Use Safari to browse to a website.

Tap the search bar in the top right-hand corner of the Safari window (if Google is your default search engine, the window will read Google until you tap it).

Type in the text you're trying to find on the page.

In the list of search results, you'll first see suggested search terms from Google. In a grouping below that, you'll see On This Page . Tap that to find the text you want on the page.

You'll see the text you searched for highlighted on the page. Move between instances of the text you searched for with the Previous and Next buttons.

When visiting a web page in the Safari app, select the Share button (it looks like a square with an upward-facing arrow in it). Scroll through the Share menu and select Find on Page, then type in the word or phrase you want to search for and select Search .

Navigate to the web page in the Chrome app and select More ... > Find in Page . Enter your search word or phrase in the text field in the top-left, and Chrome will highlight matching words or phrases in yellow on the web page.

Sometimes it's tough to find specific information within a web page in Safari for iPhone or iPad. Luckily, Safari allows you to search for text on any currently open web page using either the touch screen or an attached keyboard. Here's how.

If you don't have a keyboard hooked up to your iPhone or iPad, you can search for text within the current page using the touchscreen, although the feature is tucked away in a non-obvious place. This technique works both on iPhone and iPad.

First, open Safari and navigate to the page you’d like to find text in. Once the page is loaded, tap on the address bar at the top of the screen.

An on-screen keyboard will appear at the bottom of the screen, and the current web page address will highlight. If you want, you can clear the address bar by tapping the backspace key on the keyboard (or tap on the small "X" in a circle beside the address).

Type in what you'd like to find on the page. Locate the "On This Page" section at the bottom of the search pop-up. Tap on the line just below it that starts with "Find."

The pop-up will close and you will see the web page again with a search bar at the very bottom. Safari will highlight all occurrences of your search query on the current page.

You can cycle through the results, up and down the page, with the arrows beside the search bar.

When you're finished searching, tap "Done" in the lower-left corner of the screen. The "Find in page" mode will close.

If you have a keyboard connected to your iPhone or iPad , you can use a quick keyboard shortcut to search within a web page. Press Command+F and a search bar will appear across the bottom of the screen.

Once you see the search bar, click in the text input field and type in a word or phrase. The browser will highlight all occurrences of what you're looking for on the page, and you can cycle through them, up and down the page, with the arrows beside the search bar.

iOS 18 Safari — biggest new features for your iPhone

Highlights and a redesigned Reader add some smarts to Safari on your iPhone

Safari, Apple's built-in web browser across its different devices, won't get a radical overhaul as part of iOS 18 . But even just two big changes to the iPhone's default browser hint at Apple's larger strategy of leaning into machine learning and artificial intelligence.

Both major additions to Safari in iOS 18 promise to skim web pages and pull out the details you need. The idea, explains Beth Dakin, Apple's senior manager of Safari software engineering, in Apple's WWDC 2024 video is to offer "easier ways to discover content and streamline your browsing."

Even better, while the new Safari features do turn to machine learning, they're not part of the Apple Intelligence capabilities being introduced across Apple devices later this year. That means Safari's improvements will be available on more phones than just the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max , plus whatever iPhone 16 models come out later this fall.

With that in mind, here's what to expect from iOS 18 Safari once you upgrade to the new iPhone software, whether that's when the full version comes out later this year or Apple makes the iOS 18 public beta available in July.

iOS 18 Safari: Highlights

Think of Highlights, the biggest of the two improvements to iOS 18 Safari, as a kind of hyper-focused summary tool. Instead of merely summarizing what's on the page, though, Highlights uses machine intelligence to identify the key bits on information on a particular page and calls them out in a pop-up window as you browse.

An example Apple uses throughout its iOS 18 preview shows a web page for a hotel where Highlights has called up a window showing the hotel's location on a map, plus quick links for driving directions or placing a call to the hotel. Other examples of Highlights include Wikipedia summaries of a person, playback links for songs, or summarized reviews for a movie or TV show.

It's unclear from Apple's demo whether Highlights appear automatically in Safari, or if you need to tap a button to get the Highlights window to pop-up. Footnotes on Apple's iOS 18 summary page indicate that the feature will only work with U.S. English sites, at least initially.

iOS 18 Safari: Reader

The Reader tool in iOS 18 Safari also picks up some summarization skills, giving you the opportunity to read a quick overview of a web page when you switch to Reader mode. Reader takes things a step further by generating a table of contents for a web article that lets you see how a page is organized. Presumably, you'll also be able to jump to specific sections of the article.

Galaxy AI tools on board the best Samsung phones add summarization features, so it's good to see them get baked into iOS 18 as well. A concise summary of a web page that you've stumbled upon can give you a better idea of what an article is about, while a table of contents can help you more easily drill down to the parts of a topic that interest you.

The summarization tools in Reader appear to be limited to English in the initial iOS 18 release, though regional support is far more extensive. Besides the U.S., Apple promises availability in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa and the U.K.

Other Safari changes beyond the iPhone

Safari is available across Apple's different platforms, and there are some improvements coming to the web browser that are available for Safari on other devices. Specifically, Mac users who upgrade to macOS Sequoia will get a new way of watching web-based videos with a new Video Viewer that automatically detects when there's video on a page. Video Viewer breaks that out into a separate window with its own playback controls; click away, and the viewer becomes a separate picture-in-picture window.

Along with the Highlights and Reader additions, Safari on macOS Sequoia also promises performance improvements. In fact, Apple says the updated Mac version will be the world's fastest browser, with up to four hours more battery life than Google's Chrome browser on streaming video.

iOS 18 Safari outlook

Safari's seen more substantial changes in previous iOS updates, but that's not to dismiss the importance of what Apple's doing in iOS 18. With both Highlights and Reader leaning heavily on machine learning to power their new summary tools, iOS 18 Safari offers a taste of what Apple hopes to deliver throughout the iPhone, only without the stringent system requirements that the Apple Intelligence features demand.

No Ads, No AI: How to Get Only Links in Google Search Results

If you're tired of AI Overviews or sponsored Google search results, this quick hack could be for you.

After Google Search launched in 1998, it quickly became the most popular internet search engine.

In one of the biggest changes ever for the search giant, Google shook up its search results this spring with a new feature called AI Overviews . For many search queries asking questions, users will now see an AI summary of an answer at the top of their Google results.

Not all users are thrilled by the new AI Overviews , however, especially those who are searching for links, not answers to questions. Luckily, Google also introduced a new "Web" search filter that gives you nothing but text-based links -- no ads, no AI, no images and no videos.

Even better, you can get those link-based results on Google just by searching from your browser address bar. We'll show you how to do it on Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari or Microsoft Edge.

What is the Google Search Web filter?

Google's new Web filter is similar to its filters for results like News, Images, Videos or Shopping. When the Web filter is selected, your search results will return only text-based links, with no advertisements, AI summaries or knowledge panels like "Top Stories" or "People Always Ask."

The new filter should appear below the search box on the Google Search results page, among other filters like News, Images and Videos. You'll usually have to click the three-dot "More" menu to see it as an option.

The Web filter for Google Search will usually be placed in the menu for More filters underneath the search box.

Clicking the Web filter link will give you Google Search results composed entirely of text-based links, with no answers, ads, AI or anything else. "Web" will now be underlined and highlighted in blue under the search query box.

As with AI Overviews, we're currently only seeing the Web filter on the Chrome browser when logged into our Google accounts, but it seems to show up on other browsers regardless of logged-in status.

How do I get Google Search Web filter results for my address bar searches?

Depending on your browser, it's fairly easy to customize your browser settings so that your address bar searches go straight to the Google Web filter results. You'll need to create a custom site search shortcut in your browser and then trigger that search option with a keyword or make it your default for all searches.

The critical URL that you need to remember is https://www.google.com/search?q=%s&udm=14 . The "%s" represents your search query, and the "udm=14" tag limits your results to the new Web filter.

Here's how to add the necessary custom site search for Google's Web filter in the four most popular web desktop browsers -- Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox and Apple Safari.

Google Chrome

Open up a Google Chrome browser window, then click on the three-dot menu in the upper-right corner, next to your Google account profile. Click Settings near the bottom of that menu. You can also get to your Chrome settings by entering chrome://settings in the browser address bar.

Select Search engine from the left-hand column, then click "Manage search engines and site search" in the middle of the browser window. Next, scroll down to "Site search" and click the blue Add button.

In the resultant pop-up window, create a name for the new search shortcut and a keyword for triggering it. We chose "Old Google" and "og." For the last field -- "URL with %s in place of query" -- enter that URL we mentioned above: https://www.google.com/search?q=%s&udm=14 . Then click the blue Add button.

Now when you search your address bar using "og" + your search term, you'll get results using Google's Web filter.

If you'd like to make it your default search option, click the three-dot menu next to your new site search and select "Make default." After you make the new search shortcut your default search, all of your address-bar searches will use the Web filter -- no keyword needed.

After you create the site search shortcut for Google's Web filter, you can make it your default search engine.

Microsoft Edge

The Windows browser is based on the Chromium codebase, so the steps for adding a Google Search Web filter shortcut are similar to Google Chrome. Navigate into Settings by clicking the three-dot menu in the upper-right corner, then select Privacy, search, and services .

Near the bottom of the following screen, select Address bar and search , then Manage search engines . Alternatively, you can navigate directly to that screen by entering edge://settings/searchEngines in your Edge address bar.

Click the Add button to create your new site search shortcut. The Search engine is your name for the shortcut (I used "Old Google"), the Shortcut is the term that triggers that specific site search (I used "og"), and the URL template is the string that triggers the Google Search Web filter: https://www.google.com/search?q=%s&udm=14 .

Search engines in Microsoft Edge work very similarly to Google Chrome.

To make that new Google URL your default search, go back to the Address bar and search settings page and click on the drop-down menu next to Search engine used in the address bar . Select your new custom site search, and your address bar searches will default to the Google Search Web filter.

Mozilla Firefox

Firefox works a little bit differently for setting up search shortcuts. Instead of using the search settings, you'll create a new bookmark with a keyword shortcut, then use that keyword in the address bar to trigger the Web filter results for Google Search. Unfortunately, Firefox doesn't let you add new search engines in its desktop version.

From the Bookmarks drop-down in Firefox, select Manage Bookmarks . On the following screen, right-click on the folder in your Bookmarks where you'd like to place the shortcut, then select "Add Bookmark." (Since you'll be triggering it from the address bar, it doesn't matter where the bookmark lives.)

In the following pop-up window, enter a Name (for example, "Old Google"), the URL https://www.google.com/search?q=%s&udm=14 and a Keyword (such as "og") to save the search filter as a bookmark. Hit the "Save" button, and the Google Web filter results will be available by entering your keyword before any address-bar searches.

To search Google's Web filter with Mozilla Firefox, you'll need to use a bookmark with a keyword shortcut.

Apple Safari

Safari doesn't enable custom site shortcuts by default. The only way we were able to add the Google Web filter search was by installing the free Safari extension Smart Keyword Search , which enables site search shortcuts.

After installing Smart Keyword Search, the first thing you'll need to do is enable it to adjust your Google search results. Go into Settings , click Extensions at the top of the window, select Smart Keyword Search , then click on the "Edit Websites" button. On the following page, click the drop-down menu next to google.com and select "Allow."

You'll need to allow the Smart Keyword Search extension the permission to adjust Google searches.

Now close the Settings window, and click the icon for Smart Keyword Search that appears next to the Safari address bar. You'll see a pop-up window with the various "rules" the extension uses to modify searches. Click the "compose" button to start a new rule, then enter a name (such as. "Old Google"), prefix (for example, "og") and a familiar URL for the Web filter search shortcut.

The Smart Keyword Search extension for Safari uses slightly different syntax.

Smart Keyword Search uses the variable "{search}" instead of "%s" to indicate a search query, so you'll need to enter a slightly different URL: https://google.com/search?q={search}&utm=14 . Hit the "submit" button. Now entering "og" (or your selected prefix) before any searches in your address bar will return results restricted by Google's Web filter.

How to restrict your Google Web searches to 'verbatim' results

You can further customize your searches on Google so that the search engine only returns results based on the exact terms that you use -- not synonyms or related terms. The "verbatim" option was introduced back in 2011 and is usually accessed via the "Tools" link under most Google searches.

To add a "verbatim" restriction to your Web filter shortcut, append the attribute "&tbs=li:1" to the end of your custom search URL: https://www.google.com/search?q=%s&udm=14&tbs=li:1

Any searches that you make using that new URL will now only return text-based web links for your exact search queries.

The Safari Cat isn’t your ordinary feline. These cats are hybrid animals that are a cross of the domestic cat with the South American Geoffroy’s cat. Thus, this animal has characteristics of both species. However, traits vary with the generation of the cat. The first generation (F1) is very much in touch with its wild side, born with many of these traits. Subsequent generations are called F2, F3, and so forth.

The national cat registries do not recognize the Safari Cat. Some states, such as Idaho, Indiana, and Ohio, outright ban the Geoffroy’s cat, making the hybrid an issue. The problem rests with the fact that they are wild cats. They are superior hunters versus domestic cats, making them an ecological threat to birds and other wildlife. However, there is still a lot to learn and love about this breed.

There’s no denying that the Safari Cat is a beautiful animal. That’s part of their allure because they resemble their wild counterparts. They are more athletic and stealthier than domestic cats, but that can make them challenging for pet owners, so keep reading to see if one could be a potentially good fit for your home and lifestyle.

Safari Cat Characteristics

Getting a Safari Cat is difficult and risky on many fronts. First, there is the rarity of the animals. It’s a relatively new hybrid, which can make the cost of obtaining one exorbitant to get an exotic-looking pet. Second, genetics work against these felines because the domestic cat and Geoffroy’s cat have a different number of chromosomes. Consequently, many F4 males are often sterile, adding to their scarcity.

The varying genetics may increase the offspring’s risk of hereditary and congenital conditions. Marechal Safari Cats reports a wide disparity in the sizes of the kittens depending on the generation. F1 males may get up to 20 pounds or more. The other concern is getting a true hybrid. Only DNA testing can confirm the pedigree of the animal; a visual exam isn’t sufficient to make this determination.

Unsurprisingly, many scams exist. Our research found anecdotal accounts of the prices of kittens in four figures. Suffice it to say that a pet costing less sound should raise red flags about the authenticity of the animal’s parentage.

Safari Cat Origin & History

Some people like the idea of owning an exotic pet. That’s part of the reason you may see unusual animal companions. Hence why there are laws and regulations governing their ownership. The Safari Cat’s story began differently. Some wild species are resistant to feline leukemia (FeLV), which led scientists to consider using them for cancer studies in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Researchers have also investigated the disease’s prevalence in the animal’s native land of Brazil and the potential consequences of FeLV spreading in wild populations despite negative sampling in local populations.

The Safari Cat isn’t the only example of wild-domestic hybrids. The Bengal is a cross between domestic animals and the Asian Leopard Cat. There’s also the Savannah Cat and the breed’s heritage with the African Serval. The International Cat Association (TICA) recognizes both breeds, with the animals’ DNA not an issue like it is with the Safari Cat.

Temperament & Intelligence of the Safari Cat

Felines are intelligent, especially as predators. They must be keenly aware of their surroundings to be successful hunters. Our domestic cats have retained these traits. After all, it was one factor that undoubtedly played a role in domestication, with cats proving themselves to be excellent mousers. The Safari Cat is no exception.

This kitty has the characteristics of their wild counterpart. That’s problematic, considering the impact feral cats have on wildlife populations. The difference in this case is bringing a novel wild feline someplace where it didn’t naturally exist. That puts potential prey at a disadvantage. It also raises concerns about public safety. With that said, the American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP) opposes breeding hybrids.

The AAFP cites a valid point about keeping non-domestic animals in captivity. The temperament and intelligence of the animal may make it a welfare issue with the Safari Cat, particularly in felines of the first few generations.

Are These Cats Good for Families? 👪

We don’t recommend the Safari Cat for families for the reasons we’ve discussed. The animal may be unpredictable, posing a serious risk for young children and the elderly. Remember that our feline companions are the product of roughly 12,000 years of domestication. Meanwhile, the Safari Cat has only been around for about 60 years.

Does This Breed Get Along With Other Pets?

The Safari Cat has a strong prey drive. Keeping one in a home with small animals is a disaster waiting to happen. Again, these cats aren’t as domesticated as your average tabby cat, so predation is likely going to be a big part of this cat’s temperament, and that’s a big no-no if you’ve got other animals in the house.

Things to Know When Owning a Safari Cat:

As you’ve probably surmised, there’s a lot to know before getting a Safari Cat. We strongly urge you to contact your state about the legality of owning one. Some areas may prohibit ownership of exotic or hybrid animals, and others may require a permit or other restrictions. For example, Oregon doesn’t allow non-indigenous felines.

We also recommend verifying the pedigree of the cat before you commit to the purchase. Don’t get a pet from a seller who hasn’t done DNA testing on their animals. You should also refrain from bringing home a kitten under 8 weeks old. They need time with their littermates and mother. Wait until the kitty is closer to 12 weeks old.

Food & Diet Requirements 🐡

You should feed your kitten three to four times daily with a commercial diet suitable for their life stage to support their growth and development. Make sure fresh water is always available for your new pet. The food should contain a minimum of 30% protein and 9% fat based on dry matter weight. You can cut back to twice daily once your cat reaches adulthood.

You should slowly transition your kitty to an adult food to avoid digestive upset. A 10-pound cat should get about 180 to 200 calories daily. You can adjust the amount based on your pet’s weight and activity. If you have any concerns, please discuss your cat’s diet with your vet. We recommend limiting treats to training aids or for use in an interactive toy for mental stimulation and enrichment.

We recommend keeping your Safari Cat indoors because of the animal’s prey drive and wanderlust potential. That means monitoring your pet’s weight to prevent obesity. You must also provide mental stimulation for your kitty. Remember that this breed is energetic and intelligent. That makes boredom and the risk of unwanted behavior a concern.

The Geoffroy’s Cat hunts mainly on the ground. The animal can climb, but it’s not typical. You’ll likely find that your Safari Cat will show similar behavior during play.

Felines are food-motivated, but training must be on their terms. You can use treats as a potent motivator for positive reinforcement. You may find using rubber bands or other locking mechanisms helpful if your kitty gets into the cabinets. While you may find training challenging, you can at least redirect your pet’s behavior toward something you want them to do or avoid.

Grooming ✂️

We recommend getting your Safari Cat used to handling when young. Touch their paws and ears to make grooming less of an ordeal. You should also pick up your kitty to get them used to it.

Felines are self-sufficient for the most part. You can use pet wipes to keep your pet smelling clean . Note that we don’t ever recommend declawing your pet, although you should keep their nails trimmed to spare your furniture.

Health and Conditions 🏥

The Safari Cat is a wild card. One concern is finding a vet who will treat your pet. Some clinics may not accept hybrids. We mentioned the risk of hereditary and congenital conditions because of the mismatched DNA. It’s difficult to determine what that may mean for your pet because of the lack of information and scientific scrutiny.

However, some data suggest that the Geoffroy’s Cat, and consequently the Safari Cat, is susceptible to similar internal and external parasites. We strongly urge you to discuss prevention and vaccinations with your vet. A rabies vaccination may not be valid for a hybrid animal.

Male vs. Female

The size difference between males and females is dramatic, with the former sometimes twofold or more the bulk of the latter. Scent marking will likely be an issue in intact males. However, the question of neutering or spaying your cat has pros and cons. We suggest discussing the procedure with your vet to determine what’s best for your Safari Cat.

A woman who went for a jog in a driving-only safari section of a zoo park to the west of Paris was attacked by wolves Sunday and left with serious injuries.

The incident took place at the Thoiry zoo, 25 miles west of Paris, according to French media reports.

The 37-year-old woman from Paris, who has not been identified, was mauled by three wolves and bitten in the back, calf and neck, French broadcaster TF1 reported. She was rushed to hospital but her condition has stabilized, the broadcaster added.

The mauling victim spent the night prior to the attack at the zoo’s visitor accommodation and appears to have been attacked when she entered an area of the reserve only accessible by car and off-limits to pedestrians, the local channel reported. She was found by the zoo keepers, who heard her screams.

An investigation into the accident has been launched, according to the French media.

Christelle Bercheny, President of the Wow Safari Thoiry group, said in a news briefing Sunday that the woman entered a zone where electrical barriers prevent animals from leaving, but don’t impede humans from getting in, according to reporting from the Le Parisien newspaper.

Visitors have “all the information” on the dangerousness of this area, and are given constant reminders, Bercheny added, noting that an internal investigation has also been launched.

The woman was staying at the safari park with her mother and baby, Le Parisien said. NBC News has reached out to the zoo and national police for comment about the incident, but has not heard back.

On its website, the zoo says that it offers a safari “40 minutes from the Parisian jungle,” covering 90 hectares (around 222 acres) and is home to more than 750 animals, including Arctic wolves , native to northern Canada.

The reserve offers open-air dining surrounded by wild animals and “immersive” experiences where people can stay overnight. That includes lodges where visitors have “the opportunity to relax and live a unique experience in complete privacy with the Arctic wolves that you can observe night and day from your living room.”

Customize your Safari settings on iPhone

Customize your start page

When you open a new tab, you begin on your start page. You can customize your start page with new background images and options.

The start page in Safari, which shows favorite websites, websites saved to the Reading List, and websites open on your other Apple device. At the bottom of the screen is the Edit button.

Scroll to the bottom of the page, then tap Edit.

Choose the options you want to appear on your start page:

Favorites: Display shortcuts to your favorite bookmarked websites. See Bookmark a favorite website .

Frequently Visited: Go straight to the websites you visit most.

Shared with You: See links shared with you in Messages, Mail, and more. See Find links shared with you .

Privacy Report: Stay updated on how many trackers and websites Safari blocked from tracking you. See View the Privacy Report .

Siri Suggestions: As you search, allow websites shared in Calendar and other apps to appear.

Reading List: Show webpages currently in your Reading List. See Add the current webpage to your Reading List .

Recently Closed Tabs: Go back to tabs you previously closed.

iCloud Tabs: Show open tabs from other Apple devices where you’re signed in with the same Apple ID and Safari is turned on in iCloud settings or preferences. See Organize your tabs with Tab Groups .

Note: Your custom start page settings are updated on all your Apple devices where you have Use Start Page on All Devices turned on, and you’re signed in with the same Apple ID using two-factor authentication .

Change the text size for a website on Safari

Use the Page Settings button to increase or decrease the text size.

Tap the large A to increase the font size or the small A to decrease it.

Change the display controls for a website on Safari

You can hide the search field, switch to Reader, and more.

Hide the search field: Tap Hide Toolbar (tap the bottom of the screen to get it back).

See a streamlined view of the webpage: Tap Show Reader (if available).

To return to the normal view, tap Hide Reader.

See what the webpage looks like on a desktop computer: Tap Request Desktop Website (if available).

You can also adjust Safari settings in Accessibility settings. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Per-App Settings. Tap Add App, choose Safari, then tap Safari to adjust the settings.

Choose where to save downloads

When you download a file in Safari, you can choose whether to save it to iCloud or on your iPhone.

iCloud Drive: Select this option to save downloads to the Downloads folder in iCloud Drive. This allows you to access the downloaded file on any iPhone, iPad, or Mac where you’re signed in with the same Apple ID .

On My iPhone: Select this option to save downloads to the Downloads folder on your iPhone.

Share website passwords with a group

You can create a group of trusted contacts and share a set of passwords. Passwords stay up to date for everyone in the group, and you can remove someone at any time.

You can choose what privacy settings you want across Safari, and create individual exceptions for websites. See Browse privately .
