Whaley House: San Diego, California

Built in 1856, the Whaley House was once home to the Whaley family, as well as a granary and San Diego’s first commercial theater. Today it is a California historic landmark and a must-see for ghost seekers. The ghost sightings at the Whaley House go way back—Thomas Whaley and his youngest daughter Lillian were said to have frequently heard the steps of "Yankee Jim," who was a man executed on the property before the house was built. After the last member of the Whaley family died and the home was turned into a museum, three members of the Whaley family remained behind and frequently appear to guides and visitors. Even TV personality Regis Philbin reported seeing the ghost of Anna Whaley during his visit.

Visiting the Whaley House

Located right in the historic Old Town of San Diego , the Whaley House offers ghost enthusiasts age 12 and up the chance to take a 90-minute ghost hunting tour of the house and learn about paranormal investigative tools and techniques. October is a great month to visit. The museum runs spooky events all month and stays open until midnight on Halloween .

More Old Town

Once you’ve had your fill of ghosts, Old Town San Diego is a great place to explore with restaurants, shopping, and the Old Town San Diego State Historic Park . If you want to see it all, the city offers a two-hour trolley tour that will show you the sites while teaching you the history of the area. If you're looking for a place to stay , consider the Old Town Inn , which is conveniently located across the street from Old Town's transit center.

Eastern State Penitentiary: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Opened in 1829, Eastern State Penitentiary was the most expensive building in America at the time and famous for its sprawling layout. The first ghosts were reported by inmates and officers in the 1940s, and have been seen by historians and tourists ever since—dozens of paranormal investigation teams study the site each year working to capture evidence of ghosts. The 11-acre abandoned prison is now home to " Terror Behind the Walls ," a small ghost-themed attraction that is designed to thrill.

Visiting the Prison

Visitors who want both the history of the prison and a chance to see the spookier side must buy separate tickets for the historical museum and the Terror Behind the Walls attraction.

More Philadelphia

The prison is in Philadelphia’s Parkway museum district and surrounded by other cool spots like the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the aquarium.

Some Philadelphia-area hotels offer special deals for prison-bound guests. Try the nearby Cornerstone Bed and Breakfast and choose the "prison package" for complimentary breakfast, street parking, and two daytime prison tickets.

Avalon: Santa Catalina Island, California

Tan Yilmaz / Getty Images

Built on ancient Native American burial grounds, the city of Avalon is said to be full of the spirits of people who have died since the city’s founding in the 1890s. It used to be a go-to place for celebrities looking for a break from the paparazzi of Los Angeles—famous people such as actress Natalie Wood and author Zane Gray both died on the island and are said to remain today.

Visiting Catalina Island

The easiest way to get to Catalina Island is via the ferry that runs out of four different Southern California ports. It's an hour ride, and Avalon itself is only about one square mile, so a day trip from the mainland is definitely doable. Ghost tours run nightly and take you throughout Avalon and all of its secret history-filled spots. It is a walking tour and lasts about an hour, so make sure to wear comfortable walking shoes.

More Catalina Island

If you choose to stay for a night or two, Catalina Island has tons of activities for every traveler. Try hiking the trail from the Catalina Conservancy up to the summit of Mount Orizaba. You’ll get to see the native plants in the conservancy and beautiful views of the whole island in one venture. For the less adventurous, there are multiple spas, beaches, and shops that are a relaxing way to pass the time.

Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop and Bar: New Orleans, Louisiana

Built between 1722 and 1732, Lafitte's is thought to be the oldest structure used as a bar in America. French pirate Jean Lafitte used it as a front for his smuggling operation in his day and now supposedly haunts the premises. It is rumored his stolen treasures are hidden somewhere within the walls.

Visiting Lafitte's

Lafitte's sits right in New Orlean's  French Quarter on the famous Bourbon Street . The Ghost City Tour makes it a stop on its walking tour and offers a 21-and-older haunted pub crawl that includes Lafitte's.

More New Orleans

If you can, be sure to plan for a few days stay in New Orleans once you’ve been thoroughly spooked by its ghosts. The city is famous for its food . It is worth your time to sit down for a bowl of gumbo at the Commander's Palace or grab a beignet at Café Du Monde, a New Orleans staple since 1862.

The Stanley Hotel: Estes Park, Colorado

gregobagel / Getty Images

The setting and inspiration for "The Shining," the Stanley Hotel , stands today as an operating hotel with, according to the employees, "only happy ghosts." Storied novelist Stephen King was inspired to write the book that the movie was later based on after a one-night stay here. He slept in room 217, where the ghost of a housekeeper who was electrocuted there in 1911 supposedly lurks. The deceased founders of the hotel, Freeman and Flora Stanley, are also said to prowl the grounds, running operations as per usual and frequently appearing to guests and staff.

Visiting the Stanley Hotel

The hotel is surrounded by the towering peaks of the Rocky Mountain National Park in the small town of Estes Park . Nighttime ghost tours are discounted for hotel guests, but the public is welcome to tour the hotel for a chance of spotting Freeman and Flora.

More Estes Park

For those not wanting to spend their nights even with "happy ghosts," the town has many other lodging options, including campgrounds and home rentals. A two-hour drive from Denver , Estes Park offers every activity an outdoor enthusiast could ask for, from wildlife watching to hiking and biking, and even golf for the adventurer in need of a day off.

Fort Mifflin: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Jim Bowen / Flickr / CC BY 2.0

Fort Mifflin is a national historic landmark and one of the few remaining battlefields from the Revolutionary War. It was also used as a prison for captured Confederate soldiers and Unio deserters during the Civil War. Today it is a tourist site and hot spot for paranormal investigations. The ghosts of soldiers and prisoners killed during the wars are said to roam the fields along with a particularly vocal spirit dubbed "the screaming woman." She is frequently heard howling into the night in eternal grief and regret over the daughter she disowned after she took up with an officer, and who later died of dysentery at the site.

Visiting Fort Mifflin

The fort is roughly a 25-minute drive from downtown Philadelphia . Hours change with the season so be sure to call ahead of time to check. The site offers many shiver-inducing experiences for visitors and a series of special events throughout October. For the easily spooked, there are also three-hour candlelight tours.

When in old town Philadelphia you can take a walking tour to see such sites as the  City Tavern Restaurant , Philadelphia Merchants Exchange, and the First Bank of the United States. One of the main attractions is the Independence National Historical Park that preserves several sites associated with the American Revolution and the founding of the United States.

Robert the Doll: Key West, Florida

Cayobo / Flickr / CC BY 2.0

Robert the Doll is a 40-inch straw-stuffed doll that has been causing mischief since the 20th century. He originally belonged to a little boy named Robert Eugene Otto, fondly called Gene. When he got him, Gene named the doll after himself and they became constant companions. When weird things started happening in the Otto family home, Gene would always blame it on Robert.

According to family legend, Gene would wake up screaming in bed in the middle of the night with all of the furniture in his room overturned. According to Gene, it was all Robert. The doll was moved to the attic as Gene grew up and was left behind after the Otto family moved out. Later tenants reported hearing footsteps in the attic and objects moving around in rooms when their backs were turned.

Visiting the Museum

Today Robert lives in the Fort East Martello Museum in Key West . Be cautious if you go; Robert is said to cast curses on unsuspecting guests and is surrounded by notes asking for forgiveness from people who think they are hexed by him. The museum is open daily.

More Key West

Key West is the southernmost island in the Florida Keys and is a great October destination for those who aren't ready to give up warm summer-like temperatures quite yet. A hot tourist destination, Key West has its own airport 10 minutes from the downtown area and is accessible by car via the Overseas Highway . It takes roughly three hours to drive from Miami to downtown Key West.

Myrtles Plantation: St. Francisville, Louisiana

Shanna Riley / Flickr / CC BY-SA 2.0

A 45-minute drive from Baton Rouge, the Myrtles Plantation is a beautiful mansion from the 1790s with a haunted past. The first resident was "Whiskey Dave," also known as General David Bradford. He was a local lawyer and the leader of The Whiskey Rebellion. He was a leader without a plan and after the failure of the rebellion, he was forced to flee the United States to Bayou Sara, a Spanish colony that today is St. Francisville . Bradford bought 650 acres there in the hopes of starting a new life. In 1820, it was sold to a local man named Judge Clarke Woodruff and this is where the haunted history of Chloe, the plantation’s most famous ghost, begins.

Chloe was a slave on the plantation who was involved in an affair with Judge Woodruff. She feared she would be kicked out of the house once the judge took up with another girl, so she devised a plan to make his children sick so she could nurse them back to health. Her plan took a disastrous turn when she accidentally killed the children instead. She was hung on the plantation, but her spirit managed to stay in the house. She was first spotted in a 1992 photo and has been appearing in guests' and visitors' shots ever since.

Visiting the Plantation

The plantation offers mystery tours on Friday and Saturday evenings. Reservations are strongly recommended as space is limited and the tours are popular. You can also take a private mystery tour. If you want more time to try and get a shot of Chloe, the plantation is an operating bed and breakfast. Stay in the General David Bradford suite for a true taste of history.

More Haunted Louisiana

New Orleans , a little over an hour away from Baton Rouge, is a paranormal hot spot, with famous cemeteries, haunted homes, and the most haunted house in New Orleans,  the Lalaurie Mansion , with a gruesome history of experimentation on enslaved people.

Wood Island Lighthouse: Biddeford, Maine

David Lounsbury / Flickr / CC BY-SA 2.0

The eight acres that the haunted Wood Island Lighthouse sits on was purchased in 1808 by the U.S. government to guide fishermen in and out of Winter Harbor. Its haunted history begins in 1896 when the lone resident of the island killed his tenant and then himself. The spirits of the two men still haunt the island according to local lore and draw many a paranormal investigator.

Visiting the Lighthouse

Visitors can take a boat out of the town of Biddeford to reach the lighthouse. Knowledgable volunteers guide the journey and share the haunted history of the lighthouse. Those age 12 and older can even climb the lighthouse tower if they'd like.

More Portland, Maine

Biddeford is a 25-minute drive from Portland , which is worth a visit if you have the time. Take a walk along the Eastern Promenade Trail for beautiful coastal views or browse the local produce at Portland's year-round farmers market.

Moss Beach Distillery: Moss Beach, California

Krista / Flick / CC BY 2.0

Built in 1927, the current day Moss Beach Distillery restaurant was a successful speakeasy during the prohibition. Celebrities and politicians would drive down the coast from San Francisco and enjoy the beautiful views and booze. At the end of prohibition, it was officially opened as a restaurant and bar.

The establishment’s most famous guest during its speakeasy days was "The Blue Lady." According to legend, she was a married woman who struck up an affair with the shady bar piano player who, once he found out about her husband, murdered her on the beach below the distillery. She lingers at the spot, playing tricks on visitors and staff at the restaurant.

Visiting Moss Beach Distillery

Moss Beach Distillery is located 35 minutes from San Francisco, between Half Moon Bay and Pacifica. It is a beautiful area, with endless beaches and forests to explore.

More Along Highway One

The Stanley Hotel is most notably known for being the eerie setting in Stephen King's book, The Shining. In fact, they even host an event that revolves around Stanly Kubrick's movie. Did you think the star-studded Hollywood, California wouldn't have a place to add to your creepy crawl? The Museum of Death has an extensive collection of crime scene photos, belongings from the Manson family , and much more (that are not for the faint of heart). The clown theme isn't the only freaky thing about this place, though. It's close to the Old Tonopah Cemetery, which you can take a walking tour of. Stay a night if you dare, but don't say I didn't warn you.

October is all about the thrill. It's the one month out of the year when you're hesitant to blame those unexplained chills on the air conditioning.

10 Best Spooky Places to Visit in October

Most people associate November with Halloween. In reality, October is actually the best month to explore the spookiest places around. This is because many places become extra spooky in the fall months, with their dramatic foliage and mysterious atmosphere.

Not sure where to take your family and friends next? The following are some of the best destinations for a fun-fill season of spice and horror:

Hotel Haya, Tampa, Florida

Introducing Hotel Haya: the region’s first independent, full-service accommodation. This hotel is one of the most haunted places in Tampa. It was known to have paranormal activity, such as strange noises, doors opening and closing on their own, and ghostly figures.

This remarkable 178-room, six-story hotel honors Ignacio Haya from Ybor City’s tobacco industry. It was created by the Aparium Hotel Group. They specialize in transforming historic buildings into vibrant hospitality spaces for their communities to enjoy!

Several Ybor locals have reported an abundance of paranormal sightings within the city’s walls for years. Many curious tourists traverse its vibrant streets, searching for these unearthly apparitions and haunting tales. If exploring a city’s dark past appeals to you, get lost in a ghost tour that reveals all about the spine-chilling apparitions roaming around town.

Whaley House: San Diego, California

This was constructed in 1856 for the Whaley family. These days, the iconic California landmark is a must-visit for those looking for an exciting experience with spirits. This is surely not for the faint heart, as ghost sightings are common there.

The house was featured in the Travel Channel’s America’s Most Haunted series in 2003. Reportedly, it is home to the ghosts of Thomas Whaley and his family, as well as that of Yankee Jim Robinson. Even after the last Whaley family member passed away and their home was transformed into a museum, three members of the dearly-departed clan remained on site to haunt visitors and tour guides alike.

Sleepy Hollow, New York

Sleepy Hollow

Do you know the short story titled The Legend of Sleepy Hollow? You should! It’s a classic story of Ichabod Crane, the schoolmaster at a small village in New York. It has been said that he was chased by the Headless Horseman and never seen again.

Its legend lives on two centuries after Irving’s spine-tingling tale was first published. October is still awash with activities and storytelling events that evoke goosebumps. Take a walking tour of the village, visit landmarks, or hear tales of hauntings said to plague locals.

And if you’re spending fall in NYC , don’t forget to join the Halloween Parade!

As a testament to its infamy in the horror movie industry, it’s not surprising that many fans of the genre often request Room 217. This is the same room where Jack Torrance, the protagonist in “The Shining,” stayed. It is also a great destination for ghost hunters due to the many reports of paranormal activity.

Since the 1940s, reports of ghosts have been heard from inmates and officers at this site. To date, scores of paranormal teams come annually intent on uncovering evidence of hauntings. Historians and visitors alike can attest that these supernatural sightings persist even today.

Ensure you buy separate tickets for the museum tour and Terror Behind the Walls attraction. This is if you’re after the historic legacy and spine-tingling thrills of a prison.

In 1876, Bodie saw a dramatic influx of miners and businesses when gold was discovered nearby. Just three years later, the population had skyrocketed to 10 000 people! Many establishments popped up. However, as the dawn of the 20th century arrived, fortune gradually faded alongside the gold. By the 1940s, Bryson was all but deserted.

Bodie continues to astound visitors as it has become a treasured National Historic Landmark. It provides an authentically Wild West atmosphere free of any tacky tourist elements. On the less scary side, Frederick has strong German roots and this is clear in the Frederick Oktoberfest . Located on the Frederick Fairgrounds, Oktoberfest offers over a dozen different types of beers, including some from local breweries, along with several food tents that serve up brats, strudel, pretzels, and schnitzel.  Visitors will also take part in music and dancing, children’s events, and a sports tent.

For those that are looking for thrills,  6th Sense World Savannah Ghost Tours cover paranormal and haunted story topics of poltergeists, hags, exorcism, missing cemeteries, disembodies spirit forms, and haunted hotels.

9. St. Augustine, Florida

St. Augustine ghost tour guide

Located in Florida’s northeastern “Historic Coast”, St. Augustine is the oldest continuously occupied city in the U.S. and home to quite a few ghost stories and haunts. Learn a few of them on a St. Augustine Ghosts & Gravestones tour in the historic downtown, which was founded in 1565 by Spanish explorers.

You can even stay in a “haunted” hotel. Dating back to 1791, the St. Francis Inn is on the Select Registry of luxury inns and each room and suite is unique. If you don’t mind sharing with a ghost, request Lily’s room. Of course, if you want the opposite of death, visit the Fountain of Youth .

For more non-spooky fall fun, the Sykes Family Farms’ award-winning Crop Mazes are an annual treat in St. Augustine in October. Creepy crawly fun can be had at the Creatures of the Night events throughout October at the St. Augustine Alligator Farm.

Where to stay: St. Francis Inn

10. Orlando, Florida

Hogwarts Castle at Universal Orlando

Yes, the “happiest place on earth” can also be a great place for Halloween. While Walt Disney World keeps Halloween tame with Mickey’s Not-so-Scary Halloween Party . Just keep in mind that this is a special ticketed event not included in your entrance ticket/reservation and need to be booked in advance (and yes, they do sell out early!)

For the real thrills, head to Universal Orlando for Halloween Horror Nights. My friend Bryanna has a full guide to Halloween Horror Nights , but this event includes 10 haunted houses, five Scare Zones, themed shows, and decked-out rides and attractions. Guests can come in full costume, just be sure to buy your ticket to the event as it isn’t included in admission.

Even SeaWorld gets into the action with Howl-o-Scream , with 5 haunted houses, 7 scare zones, 3 terrifying live shows, roaming hoards, and pulse-pounding coasters in the dark, or Halloween Spooktacular for younger kids.

Legoland Florida also hosts a Monster Party as part of its Brick-or-Treat celebration during late September and October weekends. There you will find tons of candy, new shows, never-before-seen exclusive LEGO® characters, and a costume parade.

Where to stay: Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress

I’m not a big fan of spooky stuff but the Jack-o-lantern festival looks fun!

I’m with you!

This is a great collection of spooky activities! I wish we were closer because there is nowhere more beautiful than the northeast U.S. in the fall, but thankfully, we have some fun Halloween events in the west as well.

We have to have a nice fall since winter is so brutal

Tamara, great list! another suggestion is the Ghost Tour at the Mount estate of Edith Wharton in our favorite Berkshires in Western Mass:)http://www.edithwharton.org/programs-and-events/ghosts/

Great to know, thanks for suggesting it!

Great suggestion! Thank you for adding it.

Love this – so MANY great places to explore!

This Haunted Trail in New York State Is the Perfect October Road Trip

Come for the fall foliage, stay for the unsolved mysteries and stories of UFO sightings.

Evie Carrick is a writer and editor who’s lived in five countries and visited well over 50. She now splits her time between Colorado and Paris, ensuring she doesn't have to live without skiing or L'As du Fallafel.

Beneath the sparkling lakes and colorful fall foliage of New York's Adirondack Mountains lurks a surprisingly dark past. Unsolved murders, missing persons, and ghost sightings are more common than you’d think, and to help seekers of the paranormal discover these places emitting strange energies, many have been documented and mapped out in a spine-tingling itinerary.

Curated by Adirondack Wayfinder, the Haunted Adirondack Trail passes by nine truly spooky stops over more than 230 miles. You can even plug your home address into the tool and add specific historical sites and hotels to make the route your own. After you've decided on your stops, share the trail to your phone to have an on-the-go guide on hand for each site.

The order of attractions will change depending on where you set your starting point, but generally the first stop on the haunted trail is the shores of Big Moose Lake, home to the wandering spirit of Grace Brown . Grace fell in love with a man named Chester and became pregnant. Shortly after, Chester took her on a “romantic” trip to Big Moose Lake, rented a rowboat, and murdered her.

To continue the story, you'll travel next to Inlet, the tiny town where Chester was arrested. Inlet, population 300, is also the site of another haunting — that of Jasper Day , a hermit who lived deep in the woods and is said to haunt the bridge that connects the town's two lakes. The hiking trail leads to the eerie remains of Jasper’s shack.

After two spooky rural encounters, head north to Saranac Lake. In the early 1900s, the village was devoted to curing tuberculosis and many of those who were lost are said to still wander the area. Much of the action revolves around Hotel Saranac , which was built in 1927. In addition to mysterious figures who disappear at will, the ghost of a cat is said to roam the halls and many guests have reported feeling the cat brush up against them.

From Saranac Lake, continue to the town of Lake Placid, which is home to three notorious hauntings. The first story you'll hear is “ The Lady in the Lake .” Campers and boaters have continued to spot the ghostly figure of Mabel Smith Douglass, the first dean of the New Jersey College for Women, who disappeared in 1933 and was found at the bottom of the lake 30 years later, her body impressively preserved by the cold waters. Nearby, the historic Palace Theater is home to an extremely noisy — and extremely friendly — ghost named George. You’ll find him in Theater 3. And finally, Lake Placid’s oldest lodging, the Stagecoach Inn , has its own resident ghost, who is said to move items to various locations in the building.

From Lake Placid, follow the haunted trail east to the waters of Lake Champlain. This lake is home to over 300 known shipwrecks, many of which were blamed on the “ Champlain Witch ,” a bloodthirsty sorceress with an apparent vendetta against sailors. But it isn’t just the water you have to worry about. Not long ago, a couple claimed a UFO chased them down the road, only disappearing once they made it to town. That same weekend, a young boy saw a similar object in the sky and additional sightings have been reported since.

Finally in the tiny town of Lake Pleasant, travelers will find the sprawling Rhinelander Estate . In the early 1800s, it was owned by Philip Rhinelander, who held his wife, Mary, prisoner in the estate's main mansion. It's said that he poisoned her over several years. The house burned down in 1875 and her ghost is rumored to haunt the remains.

Where to Eat

In case you have to run away from any ghosts, you'll need to keep up your strength along this haunted trail. Fuel up and nab a spot on the patio at Lisa G’s in Lake Placid, where the view over the water is spectacular — especially in the fall. Or for a taste of the Adirondacks’ finer dining, head to The View Restaurant at the Mirror Lake Inn Resort & Spa. Settle your nerves with a cocktail in the lounge before moving into the dining room.

As you near the end of the trail — if you're following the original order — make sure to stop by Sticks & Stones Wood Fired Bistro & Bar in Schroon Lake. This is the place to go for a hand-stretched, wood-fired pizza, which can be enjoyed outside on the patio or inside by the crackling stone fireplace.

Where to Stay

The Haunted Adirondack Trail will take over seven hours by car, which means you’ll want to spend a night or two along the way. If you’re loving the eerie feel of the Adirondacks in the fall, book a room at the Hotel Saranac (on Main Street in Saranac Lake) or the ol' Stagecoach Inn in Lake Placid.

Not ready to put yourself at the mercy of resident ghosts? Book a room at the Whiteface Lodge or Eastwind , both in Lake Placid, and both of which have a decidedly unghostly feel.

You can enjoy the route year-round, but since haunted sites are always more fun around Halloween, and the fall colors are truly spectacular in the Adirondacks, we suggest checking the Adirondack Fall Foliage Report to get real-time updates on the changing leaves. Then, push your trip as close to Halloween as possible for peak creep factor.

11 of the scariest places you can travel, according to pros

When you travel for a living, you’re bound to meet a ghost or two

For the TV hosts, authors and social media influencers who travel for a living, it’s only natural to wax poetic about the world’s best places: the most charming villages in Europe , the most exciting safari in Africa, the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean . It’s less often we get to hear about the places on the other end of the spectrum — specifically, the places that freaked them out.

In the spirit of Halloween, we interviewed these experienced travelers to find out which corners of the globe creeped them out the most. For some, it was unsettling cemeteries abroad that sent tingles up their spines; for others, it was dilapidated guesthouses with supernatural vibes.

Here are the 11 spookiest destinations they shared.

12 chilling travel tales, as told by readers

A haunted hotel attic in Rye, U.K.

On a trip to the United Kingdom with friends, history buff and cookbook author Rick Martinez was compelled to visit the ancient town of Rye — once an infamous pirate port in the 13th century. While having a pint at the Mermaid Inn, a centuries-old hotel known for reports of ghost sightings, one of Martinez’s friends “felt a very malicious presence,” he remembers. With hairs standing on the backs of their necks, the group left and went to their accommodations down the street to sleep.

In the middle of the night, Martinez woke up in the so-called widow’s attic he was sharing with a friend. “I felt like I was just paralyzed — I couldn’t move — but I saw this woman walking back and forth around our room with a knife,” he says. “Meanwhile, as I’m seeing this and unable to move, I hear my friend essentially choking.”

Come morning, Martinez says, his friend reported “whatever was evil that she sensed in the pub had followed us home and was trying to strangle her in bed. So I was like: ‘You know what? This was great. We’re going to just go ahead and take off.’ ”

7 spooky under-the-radar places to visit, according to a ghost hunter

A paranormal funeral parlor in Cleveland

Scary situations are part of the job for Dalen Spratt, one of the stars of “ Ghost Brothers: Lights Out ,” which has a new season streaming on Discovery Plus and premiering on the Travel Channel on Nov. 26. One place that stands out to Spratt is the House of Wills in Cleveland, once reportedly the largest Black-owned funeral home in Ohio.

The property has fallen into disrepair and is a popular spot for paranormal investigators; Spratt featured it on one of his shows in 2017. He said while he was there, a woman with experience at the location brought him into the first-floor women’s restroom, and they both gazed into the mirror.

“About a minute in, my reflection in the mirror smiles at me,” Spratt said. “It was the Joker, Cheshire cat, your-mouth-doesn’t-even-open-up-that-wide-or-that-high” kind of smile. He said he fell to the ground shaking, then the women told him her reflection had just smiled at her.

“I didn’t even tell her what I saw,” he said. “That was the freakiest thing I ever saw in my life.”

Are the ‘Blair Witch’ woods actually haunted? I went camping to find out.

An eerie old jail in Charleston, S.C.

Travel expert Samantha Brown, host of “ Samantha Brown’s Places to Love ” on PBS, toured Charleston’s Old City Jail twice, more than 10 years apart. Both visits left her shaken.

The jail operated from the early 1800s until 1939 in “horrid conditions,” Brown said. Her first visit was a nighttime tour that scared her so much that she had to stop: “I started to see handprints on the walls when I didn’t see handprints before,” she said.

She returned a couple of years ago — but said she would only do the tour during the day. During the visit, the group heard footsteps behind them.

“There was no one else in that jail other than us,” she said. “I was like, ‘Okay, let’s go.’ ”

A bed-and-breakfast with bad energy in Glastonbury, U.K.

Rick Steves , the famous guidebook author and travel guide, was hosting a tour of Cotswold villages and Stonehenge in the ’80s, and was scheduled to stay in an old bed-and-breakfast near Glastonbury.

The area is known as one of the most spiritual places in Britain, drawing religious visitors and new-age witches alike. To boot, the guesthouse was built on a spot where two ley lines crossed. (Some people believe ley lines are invisible gridlines that channel the Earth’s magnetic field , and ancient civilizations aligned landmarks along them to harness power.)

Once the group went to their rooms to tuck in for the night, “I just felt some creepy spirit in my room,” Steves says. “I went out into the hall, and everybody from the tour felt the same creepy spirit in their rooms.” Having spent thousands of nights in hotel rooms, “I’ve never felt anything remotely like this,” Steves says. “So we just all grabbed our bags. … We vacated that haunted hotel.”

The skull-lined Paris Catacombs

Travel agency CEO Rani Cheema loves to be up early to beat the crowds. That’s how she found herself being one of the first few people of the day to enter the Paris Catacombs in 2015.

Wanting to keep moving, she listened to a bit of the tour, then walked ahead of people — until she realized she didn’t hear anything and was completely alone, surrounded by gated hallways, walls of skulls and darkness.

“I kept saying I didn’t like this, I don’t want to be alone,” said Cheema, whose agency, Cheema’s Travel , focuses on luxury culinary travel. She found the rest of the group and “zoomed past everyone and got out of there” once she neared the exits.

Cheema doesn’t believe in ghosts, but a friend who practices shamanism was convinced that a family of them followed her back from the catacombs and caused a wave of anxiety that she felt when she returned home.

“They kept saying you didn’t want to be alone,” the friend said of the ghosts.

Shades of ‘The Shining’ in Banff, Alberta

Barry Hoy, a Canadian travel writer and blogger at AsianMapleLeaf , recently visited the Fairmont Banff Springs in Banff, Alberta. “Beautiful, castle-like,” he said of the sprawling hotel, which opened in 1888. “Definite creepy vibes.”

Hoy went on a hotel tour on an earlier visit and learned two famous ghost stories about the property: one about a long-serving bellman who couldn’t give up his job, even after death, and another about a bride who died at the hotel before her wedding. Hoy said he has wandered the halls of the hotel, but never encountered anything himself.

“I joke about wanting to see stuff, but I really don’t,” he said.

An abandoned lighthouse on a Scottish isle

When travel writer Rolf Potts peeked inside an abandoned building underneath a lighthouse on Scotland’s Isle of Scalpay, he thought he came face-to-face with a ghost. It wasn’t a supernatural experience, but it was spooky enough to rattle him.

In 2016, Potts stumbled upon a lighthouse that had, like so many others around the world, switched from manual to automated operations. He noticed an open door to the deserted crew quarters and crept inside. The dank, empty room was a tableau of a bygone era, the workers’ tools and diversions moldering on the table.

“I saw video games rotting away under this ancient building,” the 52-year-old author said. “ ‘Astro Wars’ and ‘Space Invaders,’ the archaic games of my youth.”

Seeing the vestiges of his childhood now decrepit and faded made him aware of the growing distance between his adult self and his younger counterpart.

“It felt nostalgic and macabre at the same time,” he said. “It was an intrinsic realization of the shortness of life and my own mortality.”

12 trips to plan inspired by your favorite fall movies

A narco’s luxe prison in Medellín, Colombia

For a tour of La Catedral, TV host Nathan Fluellen hired a former police officer to show him around the mountaintop mansion where Pablo Escobar served his five-year prison sentence, starting in 1991. When the pair reached the room where the Colombian drug lord tortured and killed his victims, the guide sent Fluellen in alone.

“He had been hunted by Pablo for years,” the creator and host of the TV travel show “ World Wide Nate : African Adventures” said of his guide. “Only three out of 30 cadets [in his police academy class] survived.”

As soon as Fluellen entered the shabby room with stained walls and chipped paint, he understood the guide’s reluctance to step inside. “You could feel the energy,” he said. “I imagined all of the horrendous things that had taken place there.”

The compound appears on the first season of the Netflix series “Narcos.” But even the showbiz treatment can’t exorcise the evil spirits Fluellen sensed during his 2015 visit.

“I don’t get scared easily,” he said, “but I definitely wouldn’t sleep there, even if they turned it into an Airbnb.”

An unfinished water park in Vietnam

Being the only two people at a water park seems like a dream scenario: no lines, no tantrum-prone children, no one else’s germs. But at the abandoned Ho Thuy Tien water park, Kirstie Pike and Christine Diaz felt as if they were adrift in a nightmare.

“It was spooky and heart-wrenching,” Pike said. “It felt haunted.”

The couple, who run the LGBTQ+ travel website and vlog On Airplane Mode , visited the site in 2019, when they were living in Southeast Asia. The water park, which sits outside the city of Hue in central Vietnam, was shuttered before it was completed. Graffiti covers the walls, and broken glass crackles underfoot.

“These eerie slides were completely overgrown” with thick tropical vegetation, Pike said.

The couple climbed into a giant dragon sculpture and peered out of its mouth, which overlooks the lake. Though the sun was shining in a bright blue sky, fog rolled across the water, adding to the sense of horror and dread.

Maybe sharing a water park with one or two other visitors isn’t such a bad idea.

A claustrophobic cave in Upstate New York

Fortunately, Darley Newman isn’t claustrophobic or phasmophobic. The Lockport Cave & Underground Boat Ride in Upstate New York was terrifying enough without the phobias.

“If you want to be scared, you should go down into the tunnels blasted into the cliff face rock,” said the creator, producer and host of several PBS travel shows, including “Travels with Darley.” “The tunnels feel like they could implode at any time.”

The 19th-century engineering feat was good for businesses, providing several industries with extra water from the Erie Canal. But the project was perilous for the miners and children who helped construct the half-mile-long subterranean waterway.

“People sacrificed their lives,” Newman said.

Visitors can choose from several excursions, including the Lockport Haunted Cave walking tour, which appeared on an episode of “Ghost Hunters,” and the Ghost Hunters Experience, which involves spectral sleuthing.

“The immersive ghost tour actively showcases their paranormal side,” she said.

As a reward for not screaming your head off or fainting, Newman recommends treating yourself to a cone at Lake Effect Ice Cream , by the Flight of Five Locks.

A dark, empty cemetery in Mexico City

On the Day of the Dead, Mexico’s cemeteries are traditionally full of life. Unless you go to the wrong burial ground.

Last year, Nellie Huang, a travel writer who shares her adventures on her Wild Junket site, traveled with her husband and young daughter from their home in Playa del Carmen to Mexico City for the holiday. The trio went to Panteón de San Fernando , one of the city’s oldest cemeteries and the resting place of many notable 19th-century figures. Alas, no one else came to party with the dead.

Why we love a good cemetery

“We went to the cemetery at night. It was very quiet, very dark and empty,” Huang said. “We were the only ones there. It was very spooky.”

Huang and her family didn’t stick around long. They high-tailed it for another cemetery, Panteón San José, where they found what they were looking for: a festive celebration with taco carts, lit candles and living revelers.

“The first cemetery was full of famous people,” said Huang, who will visit Oaxaca for this year’s Día de Muertos. “The second one was more local. I definitely liked the fun one.”

How we travel now: More people are taking booze-free trips — and airlines and hotels are taking note. Some couples are ditching the traditional honeymoon for a “buddymoon” with their pals. Interested? Here are the best tools for making a group trip work.

Bad behavior: Entitled tourists are running amok, defacing the Colosseum , getting rowdy in Bali and messing with wild animals in national parks. Some destinations are fighting back with public awareness campaigns — or just by telling out-of-control visitors to stay away .

Safety concerns: A door blew off an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 Max 9 jet, leaving passengers traumatized — but without serious injuries. Best places to visit in October in USA

October is a fabulous time to travel, and these are some of the most ideal spots in these gorgeous United States to see. From popular fall foliage spots to destinations you’ve never heard of, let’s dive into the list!

1. The Blue Ridge Parkway, North Carolina to Virginia

best places to visit in October USA winding road with bright red orange and green trees

Average temp:  high 62, low 41

Stretching 469 miles from the entrance to Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina to the entrance to Shenandoah National Park in Virginia (where it turns into the equally scenic Skyline Drive), the Blue Ridge Parkway is widely regarded as one of America’s most scenic roads.

More than 15 million people using the Blue Ridge Parkway (BRP) each year, making it the most visited of all the national park units in the United States. So it’s also arguably the most popular!

The BRP’s origins date back to 1935, when President Franklin Delano Roosevelt made the historic initiative part of his New Deal. It was designed to improve American infrastructure and create jobs as a means to accelerate the nation’s economic recovery after the Great Depression.

It took until 1966 to construct the majority of the road, and another 21 years to finish the picturesque stretch from the Linn Cove Viaduct to Grandfather Mountain in North Carolina.

The result is an epic and iconic road trip that dazzles with spectacular colors in the fall, when the leaves turn to sun-speckled gems in red, orange, and golden hues. It’s by far one of the most scenic fall drives in the US!!

An autumn drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway takes you through the Jefferson, George Washington, Nantahala, and Pisgah National Forests; numerous impressive state parks (including NC’s Mount Mitchell State Park, the highest peak east of the Mississippi); and countless hiking trails, waterfalls, rivers, lakes and streams.

There are also some 200 breathtaking BRP overlooks as well as charming mountain towns such as Banner Elk, Boone, and  Little Switzerland .

The best of the parkway’s landmarks include Grandfather Mountain State Park, the Linville Gorge Wilderness, Looking Glass Rock, and Julian Price Memorial Park. Each offers opportunities to savor the splendor of America’s wilderness at its most pristine, preserved by FDR for future generations.

2. Bend, Oregon (one of the most underrated and best places to visit in October USA)

Average temp:  high 62, low 33

While Bend, Oregon is a fantastic destination year-round, the fall is a great time to visit this Central Oregon town. You’ll find far fewer crowds than in the summer months and the crisp autumn air is perfect for many outdoor adventures.

Bend is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream, and October is a great time to experience Oregon’s high desert. Cooler autumn temperatures make it the perfect time of year to hit the nearby trails.

There are a variety of  hikes in Bend, Oregon  for all skill levels and in a diverse range of settings, from pine forests to snowcapped peaks to juniper and sage dotted deserts. You can also get out onto the water on a SUP or kayak or cruise through some of the famed Bend mountain biking trails.

A fun fall activity is to head to nearby Smith Rock State Park for beautiful views and a lovely riverside walk. Once you’ve had your fill, head to the ranch just outside the park that has a large pumpkin patch, food trucks and festive games for all ages.

October is the perfect time of year to hop around the different breweries around town to sample the local brews. If you’re a real craft beer enthusiast, you may want to participate in the Bend Ale Trail, which is run by the local tourism board. Collect stamps at each brewery you visit for a prize!

3. Mammoth Lakes, California

Average temp:  high 60, low 30

One of the best places to visit in October in USA is  Mammoth Lakes . It’s located in Eastern California and is one of the most underrated places to visit in the USA in the fall. The beautiful colorful trees with the mountains in the background make this a wonderful place to stay in October.

June Lake Loop is one of the best spots to experience the fall colors. There are many lakes to explore on the loop like Silver Lake, June Lake, Gull Lake, and Grant Lake.

The whole loop is filled with stunning yellow Aspen trees, and there are many spots to explore with these beautiful trees. Make sure to stop by Silver Lake Cafe for lunch and watch the stunning views of Silver Lake while you eat.

Another great spot to see fall colors is Convict Lake which is located southeast of Mammoth Lakes . The yellow Aspens are situated at the mountain base, so it is best to walk the whole loop.

You can also visit many of the lakes that are located in Mammoth Lakes Basin. They include lakes like Twin Lakes, Lake Mamie, Horseshoe Lake, Lake Mary and Lake George. It’s a magical area to explore in the early cool fall morning.

There are so many yellow colors in Mammoth Lakes. It is probably one of the most underrated areas to experience fall foliage, and one of the best places to visit in the US in October!

4. Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado (one of the best October vacation destinations)

Average temp:  high 46, low 29

Colorado’s Rocky Mountain is one of the most beautiful (and popular) national parks in the country.

Located about 2 hours away from Denver, this park takes time ans effort to explore with countless trails, waterfalls and even one of Colorado’s most popular “fourteeners” Longs Peak.

Rocky Mountain National Park is pure magic during fall, when the incredible golden colors come out in full display. The best time to see them is from mid-September through early October.

Another thing you should know about visiting RMNP during the fall is that weekends still might be busy, as more people come to take pictures and see thousands of amazing golden-hue Aspen trees. Crowds begin to dissipate in the fall, and if you want the ultimate experience, try to plan your visit for weekday.

To see the fall colors in their full glory, take a drive along the Trail Ridge Road that is open from Memorial Day until late October. The alpine highway is a perfect way to enjoy the the fall scenery at RMNP without getting out of the car. In fact, the Trail Ridge Road is one of the top Colorado bucket list activity!

Still, try to explore some trails. Take a hike or two to enjoy the fall colors , and if you plan on doing a more challenging trail at a higher altitude, make sure to bring some layers . Temperatures begin to drop in the fall, and it’s a good idea to bring a jacket with you, especially if you plan on camping here.

Note: through most of October, the park requires a timed entry permit. Plan your trip in advance and grab your permit here .

5. Door County, Wisconsin

Average temp:  high 56, low 41

Door County, Wisconsin likely isn’t the first spot to come to mind when thinking of amazing fall colors in the United States. However, the colors here are breathtaking , and there are many wonderful activities to enjoy in Door County during fall!

The colors begin changing during the end of September, and visitors hoping to see the leaves during their peak color should plan to visit the area in mid-October.

To see some of the best fall colors in Door County, try hiking in Peninsula State Park, Whitefish Dunes State Park, Cave Point County Park and The Ridges Sanctuary, just to name a few spots.

For those looking for a less active leaf-peeping experience, be sure to take a drive along Highway 42. You can also see the leaves from above at viewing platforms, such as the newly constructed Sturgeon Bay Maritime Museum Lighthouse Tower.

Fall is also a great time to visit the apple orchards in Door County. Be sure to stop by Wood Orchard Market, where you can get awesome seasonal products such as their special apple cider donuts!

With the cooler fall temperatures, cozying up to a fire during a traditional Door County fish boil is one of the best  things to do in Wisconsin  at this time of year. Fish Boils are fun to watch and delicious. 6. San Diego, California

Average temp:  high 74, low 61

Listen, San Diego has amazing temperatures most of the year, so there’s not really a ‘bad’ time to go. However, as someone who’s traveled to San Diego many times in the fall, I can truly say that October is a fantastic time to visit this amazing city!

Less tourists visit San Diego in the fall, so there’s not as many limitations to amazing activities because of overcrowding. For instance, the San Diego Zoo is a fantastic spot to explore. It’s really enjoyable in the fall when you can see what you’re there to see, instead of waiting all the time.

An amazing activity in the San Diego area is kayaking in La Jolla Cove in October. Other top things to do include Balboa Park, Old Town San Diego and Coronado Island.

By the way, here’s an idea of how to spend a weekend in San Diego if it’s on your short list!

7. Oahu, Hawaii (top of the list for warm places to visit in October in USA)

warm places to visit in October in usa view of beach looking down with palm trees and blue water

Average temp:  high 84, low 69

The island of Oahu has beautiful weather throughout the year but fall is one of the best times to visit. At this time of year, you can expect fewer crowds around the island, plenty of days with clear blue skies and the island is still really warm so you can spend your time lying on the beach.

While it may be hotter in the summer months, the fall actually offers a more enjoyable temperature so you can get out and explore the island.

One of the highlights of any visit to Oahu is exploring the many beaches dotted around the island. The most beautiful beach on Oahu is Lanikai Beach , which is a palm tree lined stretch of brilliant white sand and crystal-clear blue water.

As it’s on the east side of the island the water is usually quite calm so it is ideal for swimming, kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding. If you are feeling energetic you can kayak out to the Mokalua Islands which are just a few hundred metres from shore.

Another great activity is to explore Kualoa Regional Park, which is where scenes from Jurassic Park were filmed. You can explore the park on foot or take a quad bike tour. The mountains here are unique with their deep ridges and tropical green coverings.

During a visit to Oahu you can also snorkel, surf, hike, visit local farms to try fresh fruit and so much more. It’s an amazing island and the weather in particular makes this a perfect fall getaway.

8. Acadia National Park, Maine (a top choice on this list of best places to visit in October in USA)

best places to visit in October USA view of multicolored fall foliage with ocean in distance

Average temp:  high 55, low 38

Acadia is among a very small group of US national parks with two genuine ‘peak’ seasons. Summer is naturally congested in Acadia, but fall is equally as busy and because of the spectacularly beautiful Autumnal foliage lighting up the park.

But striking colors aren’t everything and the fall season is loaded with other benefits in Acadia National Park.

Hiking conditions are cooler in September and October, which comes in particularly handy when climbing both of Acadia’s adrenaline pumping hikes – Beehive Trail and Precipice Trail.

Beehive and Precipice are the two outstanding hikes but there are a dozen other trails without ladder climbing elements. All of which summit with remarkable views over the Gulf of Maine, gorgeous lakes, tiny islands and of course mountain sides covered in vibrant orange, yellow, red and green trees.

Epic sunrises are one of Acadia’s greatest assets and from the summit of ultra-popular Cadillac Mountain, you can be among the first people in the US to see the sun rise over the eastern horizon. In fall, sunrise is over an hour later than in summer, which means a slightly less agonizing alarm time.

To see the richest and most vivid colors, simply get stuck into all of the  best things to do in Acadia National Park , including hikes, lakes and carriage roads.

Pro tip: Be sure to book Bar Harbor accommodation a long way in advance to avoid missing out and always be out in the park early, parking spaces are limited and fill quickly each day.

Without a doubt, Acadia National Park is one of the best places to visit in October in USA.

Fall is the ultimate time to visit New England. From “leaf-peeping” in parks to crisp weather and apple-picking, it’s no wonder that visitors flock to the region from all over the world. If you’re seeking a combination of a city break and a fantastic fall destination, consider Boston.

Boston is teeming with history, green spaces, restaurants, and quaint neighborhoods to charm any visitor. Known as the “Cradle of the American Revolution,” don’t miss the Freedom Trail .

It’s a 2-mile, largely flat walking path that traces various sites of historical importance, such as the site of the Boston Massacre, the beginning of Paul Revere’s Midnight Ride, and the Battle of Bunker Hill in Charlestown.

The Trail kicks off at the beautiful Boston Common, the oldest city park in the U.S., dating back to 1634! As you walk, you will also discover other lovely fall destinations, such as the Beacon Hill neighborhood, with its cobbled streets and romantic buildings. Be sure to stop at Acorn Street, said to be the most-photographed street in the U.S .

It’s without question that the beautiful  Napa Valley  region in California is one of the most beautiful fall travel destinations in the USA. The normally vibrant green of the grapevines turns to shades of yellow, gold and orange in Napa Valley. And as the weather cools, the leaves start to fall, leaving a carpet of orangey gold underfoot.

Napa Valley is actually a region featuring a collection of towns in between the vineyards and rolling hills. The area is a really easy drive from the best things to do in San Francisco , and will take around 1.5 hours. Having a car is a great idea in Napa Valley so that you are able to hop between wine tastings and towns at your leisure.

For a spectacular view, Artesa Wines is a great choice for a wine tasting as the large-windowed cellar door sits stop a hill providing great panoramic views of the surrounding valley.

Auburn James, just outside St Helena, is also a beautiful winery to stop in at, with a gorgeous tasting room. It is worth noting that booking in advance for your tastings is always a good idea and usually involves a small payment.

Once you’ve finished your wine tastings, head into the township of St Helena for dinner at the Farmstead – a stellar farm to plate restaurant pairing local wines with delicious food.

It sounds cliché, but Hawaii is such a gorgeous destination that it’s always worth the visit! However, as someone who has been to this beautiful island chain many times, visiting in the fall is one of my very favorite times to go.

Kauai is one of the best places to visit in October in the USA because it’s the shoulder season so it’s more affordable. Hiking trails and parking lots are generally less full, making it a great time to vacation on this island.

Highlights in Kauai in October

  • See the Waimea Canyon and NaPali Coast. It’s absolutely stunning!
  • Helicopter tour of the island . Since 80% of it isn’t drivable, this is the best way to see this gorgeous place.
  • Hike the first 2 miles of the Kalalau Trail . You’ll have to get advanced reservations to enter the park, but it’s a breathtaking experience!
  • Hike the Mahaulepu Heritage Trail in southern Kauai near Poipu. This is and easy walk and offers ocean views nearly the entire way.
  • Snorkel on Anini Beach. It’s one of the most calm spots on the island and a great spot to see sea turtles! (Just be sure to respect Hawaiian culture, keeping your distance from sea turtles and not walk on the coral.)

For the best places to eat in Kauai, it’s easier to get reservations for restaurants (which is recommended for Kauai since it’s a smaller island) in October.

Hands down, Hawaii is one of the very best states to visit in October, and Kauai is phenomenal!

Great accommodations can be found in Lutsen or Grand Marais, which are centralized for hiking and lots of activities in the area. An aerial gondola ride over the Poplar River and up the Moose Mountain is an experience not to miss to see the best fall leaf colors !

The window for peak fall color on the north shore varies anywhere from mid-September to early-October. However, the fall colors continue to be stunning in different types of forests at times beyond that window.

If you haven’t yet experienced the North Shore of Minnesota in the fall it’s one to add to your list! There are so many things to do and places to stay, it’s easy to find hotels on the North Shore MN as well.

The Eastern Sierra of California is a fabulous fall getaway destination in the USA. Fall color here is considered second only to New England , so you know you are in for a visual treat if you visit when the colors are at their peak!

From Lake Tahoe in the north to Bishop and Lone Pine in the south, the region is ablaze with foliage colors in the fall. You’ll be mesmerized by the show of yellow, oranges, and reds put on by aspens, willows and cottonwoods.

Taking a  Highway 395 road trip  is a great way to enjoy fall in the Eastern Sierra. If you prefer to have a base, Mammoth Lakes and Bishop are the largest towns in the area, and make for good bases from which to explore the beauty of the fall foliage all around you.

Doing scenic drives to enjoy the colors is the top thing to do in the fall. There are numerous paved and dirt roads you can drive. Both Inyo and Mono Counties offer the most beautiful drives. If you plan to drive the dirt roads, bring an appropriate vehicle.

The region is also known for its numerous spectacular lakes, so get out onto the water to enjoy the colors on the banks. Boating or kayaking is offered at many lakes. You can also go hiking, to view the colors up close: there are many legendary Eastern Sierra hikes from which to choose.

You’ll hit gold if you visit Shenandoah National Park during the autumn . . . plus orange, red and burgundy.

Shenandoah’s trees shed their green attire. Autumn’s palette paints the forest rusty orange, reddish yellow, and burgundy. Woodland creatures abound, including black bears, deer, wild turkeys and bats.

Located less than two hours from Washington DC, Shenandoah National Park attracts hikers and drivers. It’s also a favorite for singles and families to spend a weekend. But book your reservations early for either the park campgrounds or the Skyland Resorts and Big Meadows hotels, as they routinely sell out for the weekend.

The best time to visit is Monday through Thursday as the 105-mile Skyline Drive can turn into a traffic jam in October at peak foliage times. Skyline Drive weaves its way across western Virginia. Speed limit is 35 mph.

Your best bet is to enter the enter at the Front Royal Entrance, stop at the Dickey Ridge Visitors Center to get a panoramic family portrait and then head down the road. Stop at a convenient parking lot so you can hike through forests, scale rocky ledges, explore Appalachian Trail stops and watch waterfalls.

Or you can spend 3 hours traveling the entire length of the park on Skyline Drive. It ends at Rockfish Gap Entrance Station, which is also the northern entrance to the  Blue Ridge Parkway .  Shenandoah National Park features 200,000 acres of protected land. One of the best fall vacations in the US is definitely Newport, Rhode Island. The area has peak fall foliage throughout October.

It’s a small town located on Aquidneck Island and is surrounded by beautiful beaches and sea cliffs. During the fall, you can walk around and enjoy outdoor activities without the crowds.

The majority of people drive to Newport from somewhere on the east coast. If you’re visiting from further away, you can fly into Providence, Rhode Island, only 45 minutes away.

One of the best  things to do in Newport  is see the history of the area on the Cliff Walk. You can walk 3.5 miles past the Breakers, one of the Newport mansions, around sea cliffs, and past a few beaches.

A gorgeous day trip from Aspen is Maroon Bells Park. The feature is the mountain peak of Maroon Bells, which are surrounded by a lake and gorgeous aspen trees in the fall.

New York City is amongst the best places to spend fall in the United States. The city is known for its beautiful fall colors and even a bit of Indian summer if you’re lucky.

Las Vegas is the perfect destination to visit all year round but fall is a great time to visit. Temperatures begin to cool after the summer and so do the crowds. Plus, visiting mid-week will get you cheaper hotel rates, too.

Because temperatures are cooler, it means you can take advantage of some of the best outdoor attractions in the city, perfect for those visiting  Las Vegas for the first time .

Enjoy a Gondola ride at The Venetian, watch the Bellagio fountains or watch the volcano erupt outside The Mirage.

Rent a car or join a tour to visit the nearby national parks; Grand Canyon is the most popular day trip option from Las Vegas but October is a fantastic time to visit Death Valley, Red Rock Canyon and Bryce Canyon.

Alternatively, head to the unusual Magic Mountains or explore ‘The Neon Museum’ , a gallery of old signage from Vegas hotels of the past.

In the Bellagio hotel, you’ll find the gorgeous Conservatory and Botanical Gardens. This is one of the best free things to do in Las Vegas and a great indoor activity to enjoy.

Each season, the gardens get transformed and the fall display is the most breathtaking. Expect oversized pumpkins, woodland creatures and tall, entertaining trees.

For more natural fall colours, head to one of the nearby parks ; Floyd Lamb Park at Tule Springs, Paseo Verde Park and Gilcrease Orchard are top choices for this time of the year.

We recommend staying at The Cosmopolitan; it’s an elegant, stunning hotel and rates are normally super high but drop during the Autumn time.

Come October, the oaks, American beech and tulip trees suddenly change into the colors of the sunset—golden, orange and red. The 1,754-acre park features hikes for the hardcore as well as weekend adventurer.

If time permits, hike the two primary trails – Western Ridge Trail and Valley Trail. They run side by side. Imagine walking along a ladder laid on the ground.

Half-day hikes include Boulder Bridge, Milkhouse Ford, Rapids Bridge and Chestnut Oak/Mountain Laurels.

Or, devote a fall weekend to exploring Rock Creek Park . Tramp around the Civil War fortifications, watch interpreters at the Peirce Mill and Barn and visit the horses.

Bring a carrot or pull on your boots to ride a horse at the Rock Creek Park Horse Center, which is the only public riding facility in Washington DC.

Families will definitely want to visit the Nature Center and Planetarium. There are picnic areas scattered across Rock Creek Park, so fill a basket with ciders, sandwiches and apples.

New Orleans is a very family friendly city , even in the French Quarter, or a great destination for a romantic getaway or a fun girls’ or boy’s weekend.

A trip to New Orleans wouldn’t be complete without exploring the French Quarter. Here you can aimlessly walk along cobblestone streets, poking your head into cute shops, or eating your way through delicious food.

One of the must-try treats is a beignet, a cross between a french pastry and a doughnut. They are easily found in the French Quarter.

If you’re curious about the history of this area, take one of the many walking tours that will ultimately take you to St. Louis Cemetery No. 1. Here you will learn all about the ghosts, the after-life and even voodoo, themes found all over New Orleans.

A fantastic experience is visiting the National WWII Museum, a short walk from the French Quarter.

This is an exceptional interactive museum that focuses on the United States’ role in Asia and Europe during WWII. It’s a thrilling experience that will grab the attention of anyone even those that aren’t normally interested in history or wars.

There are countless exciting activities to do within a short drive of New Orleans. You can visit a plantation, like Oak Alley Plantation, and learn about slavery and a difficult part of US history. The drive there is beautiful and exploring the grounds is a lovely thing to do in the fall.

In addition, you can take a swamp tour which is a lot of fun. You hop on a bayou boat and explore some of the many surrounding swamps filled with crocodiles and other wild creatures.

October is the perfect time of year to visit New Orleans due to the cooling weather and reasonable crowds.

Haunted places in Upstate NY: 87 spooky sites to visit (if you dare)

Upstate New York  is such a fun place to visit, that some people don't want to leave -- even after death.

Haunted houses, cemeteries, and other sites of paranormal activity have turned the region into a hotbed for ghost hunters and fans of spooky stories, even more so than the "Amityville Horror" House downstate. Many historical sites offer guided tours, especially in the summer and around Halloween, but a few places (that we'll leave out) are on private land and closed to the public.

Note: This is not a bunch of hayrides with fake graves and people in creepy clown costumes jumping out to make you scream.

If you want real scares that will make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up, then grab a flashlight and enjoy our list of truly haunted places in Upstate NY.

ADIRONDACKS REGION

Barkeater Chocolates (North Creek)

The Haunted History Trail of New York State says the Barkeater Chocolates building, circa 1880, is a hotbed for unexplained sounds including footsteps and voices. Employees have even named a ghost Miranda, claiming she likes the room hot and would turn the thermostat up to 85 degrees until they taped the thermostat dial to keep it from moving. Guided tours are available by special appointment or at fall events.

Big Moose Lake (Adirondacks)

The story goes Grace Brown was murdered while staying at a cabin with Chester Gillette, who drowned her in the lake. Witnesses say they've seen her spirit re-enacting the "American Tragedy" or seen her face in the water, or felt wet chills.

A plaque was put up in 2006 to mark the centennial of the murder of Grace Brown by Chester Gillette at Big Moose Lake.

Brightside Hotel (Raquette Lake)

Only accessible by boat from the Town of Raquette Lake through Duck Bay to Indian Point, this secluded hotel is "very busy" with paranormal activity, according to the Mohawk Valley Ghost Hunters. Reports range from beds shaking and visions of bluish orbs to a female apparition waiting in her bedroom for her husband, who disappeared on the ice in the 1970s. The Brightside has even designated a "Ghost Room" and tells tales of the original owner, J.O.A. Bryere, who allegedly buried some bodies under the basement while he also worked as the county coroner in the 1800s.

Fort Ticonderoga (Ticonderaga)

Ghosts have been reported at the former site of many battles in the French and Indian War and the American Revolution. One  legend  says General "Mad" Anthony Wayne's mistress Nancy Coates drowned herself in Lake Champlain when he left her for another woman, and her apparition can be seen running after Wayne or floating on the water. Others say they've heard sobbing or seen artifacts in locked cases moved around. Throughout the months of Sept. and Oct., the site offers several corn maze events (including night tours by moonlight for extra fun).

Fort William Henry Museum (Lake George)

Ghost  tours  are offered at Fort William Henry from May through October, telling stories of victims of the French and Indian War that were investigated by "Ghost Hunters." Spirits even have charming nicknames, like Limper (who creeps with uneven footsteps) and the Slammer (who slams doors, of course).

Hotel Saranac (Saranac Lake)

"Hey": The Press Republican reports the Adirondack Park Paranormal Society recorded several EVPs (electronic voice phenomenons) during a 2015 investigation at the 1920s hotel. Other unexplained phenomena include doors closing unexpectedly, voices singing, a male specter in a top hat, and heavy feelings or energies. Feel free to stay for a night and join them.

Long Island Campgrounds (Bolton Landing)

At the south end of Lake George  is a ghostly bride, some say, looking for her husband after they were murdered while sleeping on their honeymoon in the 1960s.

Sagamore Hotel (Bolton Landing)

Haunted America Tours once named this historic resort one of the top 10 most haunted hotels in the U.S. Built in 1883 and now listed in the National Register of Historic Places, several ghosts have been reported -- the most spooky of which is a little boy who used to sell golf balls to the pro shop until he was hit by a car. Golfers say they've seen him chasing or even taking their golf balls, flinging them from behind a tree and laughing.

Skene Manor (Whitehall)

Another haunted place near Lake George? Must be something in the water. The 1870s-built home, originally known as "Mountain Terrace," is supposedly haunted by the wife of one-time owner Philip Skene. Her spirit has been claimed to be seen near a fountain that was once where her body was buried.

The Anvil Inn (Fort Edward)

Built in the 1840s as a blacksmith shop, the popular dining spot provides unexpected entertainment when a female spectre allegedly turns lights and music on or off, or drops bottles on the floor.

CAPITAL REGION

Batcheller Mansion Inn (Saratoga Springs)

Civil War veteran George S. Batcheller built the mansion in 1883. Visitors to the converted inn, including The Albany Paranormal Research Society (APRS), have long reported seeing ghosts and other paranormal activity. Curious? You can rent a room and stay overnight to conduct your own investigation.

Canfield Casino in Congress Park (Saratoga Springs)

Saratoga's resort hotel and popular wedding venue has long seen reports of mysterious figures in wedding photos, hostile energy, objects moving or cold spots. SyFy's "Ghost Hunters" investigated the former Congress Spring Bottling Plant and Congress Hall (which now holds the  Saratoga Springs  History Museum), experiencing hair pulling, touching and an electromagnetic field on the third floor; others claimed they were slapped by a female specter in a Victorian dress or smelled cigar smoke that isn't there.

Forest Park Cemetery (Brunswick)

USA Today  recommends this abandoned 1800s cemetery, also known as Pinewoods, located outside of Troy and closed to the public -- though the gates and fencing have been removed. Shattered gravestones and a vandalized mausoleum may disturb you, but just think how disturbed the former residents must feel. Many report feeling cold spots or something that doesn't allow them to leave, as well as lighter phenomena like the sounds of children's laughter.

Loudon Cottage (Loudonville)

Supposedly you can see the ghost of Abraham Lincoln in this summer home owned by Clara Harris , the woman who sat next to the president when he was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth. Some of his blood stained her white satin dress and she kept it in the closet, only to one day see his spirit in a rocking chair, staring at it. The closet was bricked up, but reports later indicated sounds of gunshots and sightings of a young, blood-soaked woman with Lincoln. The cottage is not currently open to the public, but tours have been offered in the past.

NYS Capitol Building (Albany)

The Hauntings Tour takes visitors through the Capitol Building in October, telling  tales  of ghosts like a man who jumped to his death from the fifth floor in 1890, and Samuel Abbott, a nightwatchman who died in a 1911 fire (that mysteriously didn't burn any sacred Iroquois artifacts in the building).

The Knox Mansion (Johnstown)

The  Haunted History Trail  recommends this 42-room house built in 1889 by Charles Knox. Ghost tours and guided visits are offered, with experiences like flickering lights, mysterious footsteps, cold spots, spooky voices and visions of ghosts, like a late gardener who apparently only appears to children.

Vale Cemetery (Schenectady)

According to hauntedplaces.org , this 150-year-old cemetery allegedly has statutes that bleed from their eyes, ghostly figures that wander gravesites, and sounds of singing in an old church on the grounds. Themed public tours are offered on the first Sunday of the month from May through October, taking the morbidly curious through the victims of the Revolutionary War, the "Victorian Lady in Mourning" and others.

Yates Elementary (Schenectady)

Students at this K-6 magnet school have reported seeing children enter a locked door with a hidden staircase to a classroom for disabled students, according to  The Free George . Others have claimed to see ghosts in the bathroom or heard children's laughter when there are no kids on the grounds.

CATSKILLS REGION

Burn Brae Mansion (Glen Spey)

"Burn Brae Mansion is one of my favorite places to stay when I am up here," "The Exorcist" actress Linda Blair once said. A mansion in the Catskills has reportedly been haunted by a variety of mysterious sights and sounds, sparking several paranormal investigations. You can stay overnight, book your own investigation or attend special events for fans of the supernatural.

Captain's Inn Point Lookout (East Windham)

The inn, previously known as Point Lookout Inn, was once the site of a murder. It's believed that  a couple checked into Room 12, but the woman never left because she was killed by the man she arrived with. Room 12's tainted past has resulted in patrons of the room reporting strange happenings such as foul odors, voices and flickering lights.

Murderers' Creek (Athens)

The creek, 1.5 miles from Hudson-Athens Lighthouse, is supposedly haunted by the spirit of Sally Hamilton, a young girl whose body was found mutilated and suffering from a broken skull under a bridge in the creek. Hamilton was the daughter of a prominent businessman and went missing prior to the discovery of her body. Boat rentals are available for haunted rides through Murderers' Creek.

The Shanley Hotel (Napanoch)

The Shanley Hotel, purchased in 1906 by James Louis Shanley, has been the site of many tragedies , including the death of all three of his children before the age of 1. His sister-in-law Esther died at the hotel, also, after becoming sick with influenza. Other rumors that plague the hotel involve accidental deaths and even murder. The hotel is said to have rocking chairs that rock on their own, mysterious clock chimes, voices, the laughter of children and more. The hotel has 35 rooms that can be booked for stay.

CENTRAL NEW YORK

Beardslee Castle (Little Falls)

A stone's throw from the Thruway (Route 90) is John Beardslee's home, built in the early 1800s, now a popular wedding destination -- especially for fans of the supernatural . Stories of hauntings from victims of the French and Indian War have persisted for decades, but other legends include ghosts of a woman named "Abigail" who died the night before her wedding, and Pop Christensen, the first owner of the castle when it was turned into a restaurant, who allegedly hung himself in the building.

Brae Loch Inn (Cazenovia)

This popular Scottish-themed inn and restaurant was originally the home of William Burr. According to  hauntedplaces.org , several rooms are haunted by visions that include a man in a kilt (known as "Scotty"), a young girl in a blue dress carrying a tray of candles and a shadowy male figure.

Bull's Head Inn (Cobleskill)

Built in 1802, this inn didn't stir up any spirits until the '60s when a bar was added and disturbed the spirit of Mrs. John Stacy, an anti-alcohol advocate who's  said  to knock silverware, glasses and more off tables. Visitors and investigators have reported seeing an apparition in a long white dress, hearing doors slam shut or even communicating via flickering lights.

Casey's Cottage (Mexico)

Mysterious occurrences are frequently reported at Casey's Cottage, located on Lake Ontario at Mexico Point State Park. Visitors say they've seen candles flying off the fireplace mantel, lights flickering, chandeliers swaying and translucent figures -- possibly including the cottage's namesake, William Casey.

Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum (Chittenango)

Chittenango is best known as the home of "The Wizard of Oz" author L. Frank Baum, but the dry docks along the Erie Canal are allegedly haunted  by victims of thieves and murderers, searching for justice.

Dr. Best House & Medical Museum (Middleburgh)

This "time capsule" of early medicine may be plagued by victims of archaic hospital procedures that are no longer practiced, or by the doctor and his family who died within the walls of the house. EVPs and other unexplained events have made this a popular place for "Haunted History Tours" in October .

Fingerlakes Mall (Auburn)

This CNY shopping mall says ghost investigators have recorded more than 200 EVPs and video of entities since a late-night watchman allegedly ran out terrified after his first "encounter." You can book your own ghost hunt and see for yourself.

Erie Canal Museum (Syracuse)

Several ghosts allegedly haunt the Erie Canal Museum , including arguing men, a woman who was killed in the building and children in the courtyard. Shadow Chasers recorded pictures of orbs, lights turning on and off and spooky noises in a 2012 investigation.

Grapevine Farms (Cobleskill)

According to Haunted History Trail , this 19th century farmhouse is now a gift shop and venue for weddings and banquets, but four ghostly spirits still live there. Encounters include ghostly children running through the halls; investigations and tours can be booked.

Fort Ontario State Historic Site (Oswego)

This "Guardian of the Northern Frontier" was a fortress for U.S. military for centuries. Now it's a creepy/fun place to visit, featured on "Ghost Hunters" with phenomenon ranging from strange lights and music to a woman in an upstairs window or the sound of a child calling his cat. The fort hosts a ghost hunt in mid-October every year.

Herkimer Home State Historic Site (Little Falls)

Revolutionary War General Nicholas Herkimer built this Georgian Mansion in the Mohawk Valley in 1764. Considered a hero for defending Fort Stanwix from British red coats, he was wounded in battle and died at his home days later. Hyde Hall (Cooperstown)

Did Juliette Gordon Low, Samuel F.B. Morse and Alice Lawless ever really leave his 19th century mansion? Stories of a curse and other not-kid-friendly hauntings are covered in summer and October "Hyde & Shriek!" ghost tours.

1890 House Museum (Cortland)

The Atlantic Paranormal Society (TAPS) investigators from Syfy's " Ghost Hunters " also investigated this home where six members of the industrialist Chester Wickwire's family died. People that have spent the night in the house hear strange noises that sound like ghosts, making "Spirits in the Castle" tours a fun visit in October.

A woman named Claire allegedly haunts the former site of the  Syracuse  Police Department parking garage after she jumped to her death in the 1950s when she discovered her cop boyfriend was cheating on her with another woman. Otesaga Resort Hotel (Cooperstown)

According to  NBC , the more than a century old hotel near the National Baseball Hall of Fame was the private Knox School for Girls from 1920 to 1954. Stories of seeing ghostly children playing, giggling or even calling people's names out -- especially in rooms 307 and 585 -- led to an investigation from SyFy's "Ghost Hunters" who confirmed "friendly spirits" exist there. Stories include reports of strange colors and lights and an exorcism performed there.

Sylvan Beach Amusement Park (Sylvan Beach)

Syfy's " Ghost Hunters " found "significant" paranormal activity in 2012 at this classic amusement park and its nearby Yesterday's Royal restaurant-hotel. The park is open from May to October, with periodical "park after dark" tours of the spookiest places,

The Farnam Mansion (Oneida)

Eight people died in the 19th century Victorian mansion, and guests at the former inn say they've seen human and animal spirits, heard ghostly voices or seen objects moving on their own. In 2013,  WRVO  interviewed the owners of the privately owned house about their paranormal experiences while living there. In the past, the owners have hosted guided tours and once opened their home to an investigation by the New York Shadow Chasers, who found evidence of paranormal activity there in 2011.

Today, legends include a pair of brothers who allegedly lived in the house and raided passing stage coaches, killing the occupants and burying them in the hills nearby.

The Van Horn Mansion (Burt)

A woman named Malinda Niles Van Horn died a year after marrying James Van Horn Jr. in 1836, but she still refuses to rest in peace. Doors slamming, sounds of whistling, smells of tobacco and perfume, lights flickering and other phenomena have led to theories that she was murdered, committed suicide or died during childbirth or illness. Come in October for the Candlelight Tours, if you dare.

Statler City Hotel (Buffalo)

The Greater Western New York Paranormal Society (GWNYPS), known for the docu-series "Behind the Shadows," regularly leads ghost tours of this 1923 hotel, built by Ellsworth Statler, where some guests apparently never checked out.

Where To Stay In Las Vegas

There are so many options and so many themed resorts that it can be hard to narrow down the best options.

Paris Las Vegas

What could be more fun than a weekend in Paris?

Paris is centrally located in the middle of the Strip and the rooms are usually pretty cheap compared to some of the others properties in the area.

Polo Towers

Polo Towers is located directly on the Strip, across from Aria, Waldorf Astoria, Park MGM and more.

We’ve stayed in a variety of room types here and these are reviews of each type.

Studio Efficiency Room

I recommend the Studio Efficiency if you’re traveling solo and wanted to save some money.

The size is more similar to what you’d see in some areas of Europe.

Very small, but has what you need.

One Bedroom Accessible Room

We ended up in one because it’s all they had available, but as someone who is short (5′ 1″), the accessible room was actually really nice.

The kitchen counters and appliances were lower and much easier to reach.

Two Bedroom

The two bedroom villas are great for bigger groups or families.

The rooms here have full kitchens, which is virtually unheard of in Vegas, at least in non-timeshare hotels.

Horseshoe Hotel & Casino (Formerly Bally’s)

This Horseshoe King Room is centrally located on the Strip and is consistently one of the cheapest hotel options in Vegas.

We usually are able to book a weeknight for $29 a night + resort fees.

Delano Las Vegas

This is another luxury resort, but on the far south end of the Strip, attached to Mandalay Bay.

I most enjoyed the soaking tub with a water fountain faucet and the tv in the bathroom.

Our room also had a separate half bath out in the living room.

October Travel Destinations

October is an incredibly underrated month for traveling and vacations. Sure, the kids will be in school — which might limit your options — but the shoulder season is upon most of the world (meaning big money-saving opportunities), and there are even fascinating festivals throughout the globe. It might be a little chillier in many regions , but the best places to travel in October embrace the fall season with joy.

For example, many countries and cities hold fall festivals, such as Hachiman Matursi, Japan, with its unique fall crafts festival, one that draws thousands of people a year. Beyond these celebrations, October is one of the best times to fly because tickets are often dirt cheap.

Note that the best October travel destinations (including European travel destinations in October) will vary heavily based on your interests. Want to check out some late-season Oktoberfest events? Munich, Germany, might just be the best option for you! Or are you into more low-key vacation spots? There are great places you can try! Any of the following choices will keep you busy and have fun throughout your whole trip!

The 7 Best Places to Travel in October This Year

When booking any of these October travel destinations, make sure that you read through these sections carefully to learn more about them. For example, you should know what kind of events take place there (we have you covered), as well as various tips that make each destination more enjoyable. In this way, you can visit even the most exciting European travel destinations in October without too much difficulty.

1. Concurs de Castells, Spain: The Human Tower Competition

Concurs de Castells is an amazing experience that you’ll remember for the rest of your life: human castles taller than buildings that move and sway! Obviously, it is one of the best European travel destinations in October, and this event will take your breath away with every second.

Dating back to the 18th century, this event (October 1-2) features 32 tower teams that can rise as high as nine stories. At the top, a child is placed: what a unique experience for that little one! While here, you can enjoy Catalan culture, parades, street performances, and amazing music experiences.

Tips for Visiting Concurs de Castells

When visiting here, book ahead of time by as much as a year. Like many of the best October travel destinations, it’s incredibly popular. Note that tipping etiquette is very different in Spain than in America: servers get paid very well and don’t require tips to survive financially.

2. The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, New Mexico

What’s cool about October travel destinations like this is that they take place all over the world! While you could visit Albuquerque, New Mexico, to experience this event first-hand (from October 5-13), many large cities around the world hold similar festivals at the same time.

That said, visiting the original Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is worth it if you have the time and money! With drone light shows, gorgeous balloon displays, amazing opening ceremonies, and even musical performances, this festival is one that you and your kids will never forget.

Tips for The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta

When visiting this week-long fiesta , it’s worth signing up for their monthly newsletter to learn when tickets go on sale and more about the event in general. Note that you also buy tickets based on the “session,” not the day, with morning and evening sessions being your options. Choose wisely.

3. Rubber Duck Race, Freiburg, Germany

In early October (dates vary), Freiburg, Germany, becomes one of the quirkiest and most enjoyable European destinations in October, thanks to the Rubber Duck Race ! This event is exactly what its name suggests — over 7,000 rubber ducks get placed in the River Necker every year for a race.

How exactly does this event work? Well, anybody can participate (even visitors from different countries) by placing their name and number on a rubber duck and placing it in the river. If yours wins, you get a monetary prize! Watching thousands of yellow ducks roll down the river is very cute.

Tips for the Rubber Duck Race

While Germany is generally one of the best places to travel in October (for the Rubber Duck Race and other events), it’s important to note cultural differences. For example, table sharing is common, and you might have to eat with strangers. It’s not as awkward as you’d think, but be prepared for it.

4. Fall Color Tour, Marquette, Michigan

Michigan’s Upper Peninsula is a wonderland of natural beauty, and Marquette, its biggest city, is one of the best October travel destinations for fall leaf tours. As a college town, Marquette offers plenty of great restaurants, breweries, and activities, including used bookstores and college sports.

For example, Northern Michigan University has a competitive Division A hockey team that’s always worth checking out. If you plan on doing a fall leaf tour, don’t forget to check out the many waterfalls in the area. You’ll be in for quite a hike, but one that’s more than worth it if you love nature.

Tips for Visiting Marquette

Plan to pack for winter weather when visiting Marquette : temperatures drop early, and snowfall is common here. Also note that, as a college town, there are many students (about half the population during the school year), so keep that in mind when booking your vacation here.

5. Bahamas Heritage Festival, Nassau, Bahamas

If you’re looking for a more warm-weather destination for your October vacation, Nassau, Bahamas, is an excellent option. The Bahamas Heritage Festival (October 7) will provide you with a fascinating experience, including lots of arts and crafts, live music, food, liquor, and much more.

During this celebration, you’ll learn more about the Bahamas in general and experience all the unique fun and excitement it can provide. Note: You must be 18 to attend, so there are no children. If you plan on bringing your little ones, there are still plenty of great activities in and around this area.

Tips for Visiting the Bahamas

The weather in Nassau should be pretty decent during your visit. Though there’s about a 20% chance of rain all month long, temperatures range between 74 and 84 degrees Fahrenheit, with an average of 83. It might be a little windy, too, so you might want to bring a windbreaker to avoid discomfort.

6. Cirio de Nazare, Belem, Brazil

If you want to enjoy a Festival-style celebration in Brazil but missed it this year, Belem is one of the best places to travel in October. Unlike most European travel destinations in October, the weather should be mild (about 76 degrees Fahrenheit on average ) with lots of amazing activities.

For example, Cirio de Nazare can provide you with the exciting experience that you deserve. This annual celebration includes an amazing procession of boats crossing the Amazon River carrying a religious statue of major significance. If you’re into a more spiritual experience, this is one of the best October travel destinations and something you should seriously consider booking ASAP.

Tips for Visiting Brazil

Brazil can be a costly country to visit, so try to save money by booking hostels (you share a room with multiple people) or even buying local foods to make meals. You can then save your money for event tickets to ensure you get the best and most comprehensive experience possible.

7. White Truffle Festival, Alba, Italy

Taking place between October 12 and December 8, Alba’s White Truffle Festival is one of the most popular events in Italy in October. It comes during a low-key time in Italy’s tourist trade (the infamous shoulder season), so it should be easy for you to book a vacation here with minimal fuss.

During this event, you’ll learn about white truffles and their history, watch cooking shows, try amazing truffle-based dishes, and even visit Mudet, the world’s best truffle museum. If you’re into a  culinary adventure and love great foods, this festival is a fascinating place to visit in October.

Tips for Visiting Italy

Italian culture is, in many ways, the polar opposite of Germany. While Germans are reserved, quiet, and stoic, Italians are very gregarious , chatty, and open with visitors. Be prepared for residents to try to talk to you in Italian even if you only know English. It’s welcoming and overwhelming (and fun).

Travel Tips and Preparations From the Parking Spot

No matter which of the best places to travel in October you plan on visiting, The Parking Spot has some suggestions that can improve your vacation. These include how to pack properly, planning for your transportation and navigation, and other vital tips you simply can’t ignore.

Cold Weather Packing Suggestions When Snow Starts Falling

Most of the best places to travel in October will be fairly cold: it’s right in the middle of fall, and snow could even start coming down, so it’s critical to pack some cold-weather clothes. It’s essential, especially if you plan on being outdoors a lot. Just a few things to pack include:

  • A heavy coat in case the temperatures drop precipitously
  • Down jackets and sweaters that can keep you cozy in mid-level weather
  • Long-sleeve tops that work well when layering up for the day
  • Winter boots and water-proof shoes for snow issues
  • Beanies, scarves, gloves, and socks that can keep you warm

Warmer Temperature Packing Tips for October Heat Waves

There aren’t many European travel destinations in October that will be warm enough for swimming, short-sleeve shirts, or even shorts. However, other parts of the world (i.e., anywhere in the southern hemisphere) may be quite warm, so if you plan on going there, make sure to bring accessories like :

  • Sunscreen if you plan on being outdoors for hours at a time
  • Light shirts and pants (it’s not quite summer: think mid-spring temps)
  • Sandals if temperatures get warm enough for the beach
  • Sneakers and walking shoes for nice outdoor hikes
  • Backpacks for holding your gear if you plan on being outdoors

Suggestions for Transportation and Navigation for October Vacations

The most exciting October travel destinations often have multiple transportation options you must consider before visiting. Just as importantly, you must consider things like airport security and even hotel bookings, so make sure you try out these tips when traveling anywhere this October:

  • Contact Your Bank/Credit Card Company : While your debit and credit cards should work perfectly well on your vacation, let your providers know beforehand that you plan on going overseas. This step can reduce your risk of accidentally triggering fraudulent charge alerts.
  • Research Your Airport Security : When traveling, always make sure that you know whether your airport uses Global Entry or TSA Precheck and make sure you know the differences between the two. This can save you a lot of time and minimize potential travel complications as well.
  • Download Travel Apps: The best travel apps offer discounts on plane tickets, event fees, and restaurant visits. Many even offer maps and ride-sharing coupons, so make sure you find apps that work in your destination and try them out while on your trip.
  • Know Public Transportation : What kind of public transportation do your October travel destinations provide you? Are there Uber drivers or taxis? What about trains and subway stations? Most European travel destinations in October have train schedules, so find a map and plan your trip around them.
  • Always Book Ahead : We can’t stress this enough: when hitting up the best places to travel in October, always book ahead! You should have hotel rooms, car rentals, and event tickets in hand before you ever set foot at your destination: you’ll thank us for this suggestion later!

The Parking Spot Says “Enjoy Your October Vacation!”

These unique and rewarding October travel destinations (including the best European travel destinations in October) are just as rewarding as traveling in any other month: for the right person, they’re even more exciting! Whether you plan on visiting the best places to travel in October on a solo vacation or with your family or friends, the fall-themed excitement each brings is truly unique.

Before booking, start planning ahead for your trip, including looking for places to stay, buying tickets to many events, and carefully packing your bags for the weather. Just as importantly, make sure your car is safe by booking with The Parking Spot. Finding a great place to park (and saving money by joining The Spot Club ) will ensure your trip goes smoothly and safely.

Below are some of our favorite festivals, special events, seasonal offerings, and more!

1. 100th Anaheim Fall Festival & Halloween Parade

The annual Anaheim Fall Festival and Halloween Parade is a must-visit event Saturday, October 28th from 11am to 6pm on Center Street.

This festival brings together local food vendors offering a variety of treats.

This festival not only offers delicious food but also provides a festive atmosphere that celebrates Halloween.

The parade will start at 7 pm at City Hall and proceed west via Center Street and Broadway.

Hammer, from AFunCouple.com shared his experience from previous years.

“My visit to the Anaheim Fall Festival was like stepping into the heart of autumn itself.

The air was filled with the delicious smell of kettle corn and freshly baked treats, making it feel cozy and inviting.

What made it even more special was the strong sense of community, with families, friends, and local folks all coming together, creating a lively atmosphere filled with laughter and smiles.

The sight of colorful pumpkin displays was a joy, especially watching kids excitedly pick their favorites.

But the festival had even more to offer, with fun activities like face painting for kids and craft booths where people of all ages could make their own fall-themed creations.

Live music added a nice touch, and local artists showcased their handmade goods.

It was a complete celebration of fall, where every corner had something fun to explore, and the feeling of togetherness made it a truly unforgettable experience.”

2. Oogie Boogie Bash At Disneyland

Yulia Saf, the CEO of Miss Tourist shares that this annual event transforms Disneyland into a giant Halloween party, where visitors can enjoy costume parades, trick or treating, and meet Halloween-themed Disney characters.

“Here is something great you can do at the Disneyland Resort in October that does not require a park ticket!

Visitors can play Pluto’s Pumpkin Pursuit at Downtown Disney.

Through November 1, Disney character-themed pumpkins will be hidden around the Downtown Disney District for Pluto’s Pumpkin Pursuit.

Simply pick up a game board and stickers for $9.99 and have fun searching for hidden pumpkins.

When you find them, place the corresponding stickers on your game board.

Return the completed game board for a fun Disney prize.

This is a fun scavenger hunt activity if you’ve got little kids, or if you are a local visiting the Disneyland Resort to get a taste of Disneyland Halloween fun without having to pay for a park ticket!

Downtown Disney will be colorfully decorated for Halloween and fall during this time, making this Halloween activity extra festive!”

4. Oak Canyon Nature Center Night Hikes

On the 3rd Saturday of the month, you can experience the park at night on a guided hike.

Jens shares his experience with this event from previous years.

“This evening guided nature hike offers an immersive experience.

Amidst the rustling leaves and soft glow of twilight, the intertwining of local folklore creates a serene yet enlightening atmosphere.

I’ve participated in this hike before, and the ambiance is both refreshing and reflective.

It feels like somewhere out of a Tim Burton movie honestly.”

5. Seasonal Food Offerings At Anaheim Packing District

Jens also shared his experience trying seasonal offerings at the Anaheim Packing District.

“A renowned spot throughout the year, its character in October is notably different.

Several vendors introduce seasonal offerings.

Last year, I had the pleasure of tasting a pumpkin-spiced churro, a delightful treat that genuinely captured the spirit of the season.

The district also embraces an autumn-themed decor, enhancing the overall experience.”

6. Adventure City’s Boo-Tastic Halloween Party

This party takes place on select nights in October: 6th, 13th, 19th, 20th, 26th, 27th, and 31st from 5:30 pm – 9:30 pm.

You’ll also have a night vision camera on you to record your entire experience, which will be emailed to you after.

It’s easily the scariest experience I’ve ever had in my life.
