Bab al-Bahrain souk , found in the capital city of Manama, features a wide range of shops and stalls. These shops sell a wide variety of things such as souvenirs, spices, incense, perfumes, handicrafts, and colorful textiles. In addition to shopping to your heart’s content, visitors can sip on a cup of coffee while people-watching in the flourishing outdoor market or admiring the cultural landmark and visitors center located in the area as well.

For those interested in experiencing the beautiful islands which surround the Kingdom of Bahrain, a day of island-hopping is a must. The Hawar Islands are just around 12 miles (20 kilometers) south of Bahrain and are best accessed by departing from Al-Dur Jetty off Al-Fateh Highway. The islands have stunning beaches and native flora and fauna. They're also a haven for bird watchers.

Situated in the Diplomatic Area off of Exhibition Avenue is the Beit Al Quran or the House of Quran. It features an exceptional collection of Quranic manuscripts and a library of more than 50,000 books written in Arabic, English, and French. Some manuscripts go back as far as the 7th century, so this is the place to be for history buffs. The extraordinary collection showcases Qurans written on rice, peas, parchment, and even grains. The center also houses a madrasa (religious school), a museum, an auditorium, a mosque, and a host of art exhibitions from around the country.

For a family-friendly day out, visit the Lost Paradise of Dilmun Water Park. As Bahrain’s biggest water park, it covers 828,821 square feet (77,000 square meters) of land. The park is located near the Formula One Bahrain International Circuit in the southern governorate of Bahrain. It has a host of fun activities to enjoy including wading in the Oasis Pool, speed slides, tots pools, family raft rides, and so many more rides and water activities. The park also offers an array of dining options which include Indian fare at Roti Boti, an Arabian Grill restaurant, and a food court with burgers, sandwiches, and ice cream.

The two 50-storey towers that soar over the financial district are a major landmark on the waterfront. You will have seen this magnificent racetrack on the Formula 1 circuit before – even if only on television. If you're in the country a visit is one of the best things to do in Bahrain. Arabian horses have a beauty and mystique all their own, with a history dating back thousands of years. Legend has it that the Queen of Sheba gave a pure Arab mare to King Solomon to show her love.

One of the most exciting things to do in Bahrain is riding your horse across the sands of Karbabad Beach as the sun sets over the Gulf. You don't need to be an expert rider, experienced handlers will be there to make sure your trek is a safe one.

Bahrain’s dining scene has been getting international attention in recent years, and a good taster for the experience is Wolfgang Puck’s flagship restaurant on the waterfront in Manama.

The view outside is matched by the sleek inside of this American-style steakhouse, equally famous for its seafood as its prime beef. It’s recognised as one of the world’s best restaurants, so you might want to make a reservation before you even leave home.

Bahrain’s pearls are recognised as being among the very best in the world, and the industry here once employed almost half the male population. No wonder diving for them was off-limits to visitors for decades. However, scuba divers can now take to the clear blue waters offshore to collect up to 60 oysters at once, keeping any pearls you may find once they are opened.

Named after the founder of Bahrain, this mosque was built with imported Italian marble, Austrian glass and Indian teak. It’s one of the largest mosques in the world, with a library holding many historic volumes.

Visitors are made to feel very welcome and knowledgeable guides (who speak English, Hindi and many other languages) are on hand will answer any questions you have about the building or Islam during the regular free guided tours.

7. Discover Bahrain's history at Bahrain National Museum

A visit to Bahrain's National Museum is one of the best things to do in Bahrain to embrace the country's rich history. The museum is located in Manama and is one of the largest and oldest museums in the country.

The design of the building in which the museum is located reflects traditional Bahraini architecture. Here you will find galleries featuring artefacts and exhibits on Bahraini history, including a display of ancient artefacts from the Dilmun civilisation, which dates back to the third millennium BC.

One of the oldest and most popular markets in Bahrain, Manama Souq is renowned for its lively atmosphere and colourful stalls full of different goods for every taste. The Souk is a tangle of narrow alleyways and streets with shops offering a variety of goods including traditional clothing, spices, perfumes and more.

The souk is famous among visitors and locals in Bahrain for its gold market, where impressive gold jewellery in both traditional and modern designs can be purchased. In addition to gold, you will also find a textile section where you can buy beautiful fabrics and clothes.

The wonder of water is even more marked amid the majesty of the desert sands. This oceanside lake is a great place to stroll, sit with a coffee, enjoy a meal or visit the shops and other sights. Visiting the park is one of the best things to do in Bahrain for families – many attractions here are aimed at kids. In winter, you’ll be drawn outside to enjoy the cool evening breezes and the myriad lights reflecting off the lagoon.

Bahrain is a paradise for water sports and strapping into the Jetovator – a kind of flying water-propelled bike – is one of the most unique thrills you can have anywhere in the world. Flying 40ft in the air on a jet of water, doing acrobatics if you feel up to it or just taking in the view, this is a thrill of a lifetime.

Muharraq Island is full of historic houses, including the spectacular Beit Sheikh Isa Bin Ali Al Khalifa. Built around 1800, it is probably the oldest house in Bahrain and was once the ruler’s residence and the centre of government.

Now open to the public, the elegant two-storey building is also home to the Ethnographic Museum which takes up a whole city block. Its thick mud walls, shaded courtyards and wind tower show how the residents of Bahrain adapted to the hot climate before air-conditioning.

Al Dar Island is a small uninhabited island off the coast of Bahrain. A boat trip to the island is one of the most popular things to do in Bahrain, thanks to the island's lovely beaches and relaxed atmosphere. You can take a boat trip to the island from various locations in Bahrain, including the capital Manama. The trip usually takes about 30-45 minutes and offers stunning views of Bahrain's coastline and surrounding islands.

On Al Dar Island itself, there are plenty of beach activities to suit all tastes. Visitors can either just relax on the beach or choose from a variety of water sports, including jet-skiing and kayaking. Because the island is surrounded by coral reefs, snorkelling and diving are also popular activities.

While Bahrain is no bigger than Greater London in size, this diminutive island nation is packed with exciting things to do. Historically, it is a kingdom of seafarers, pearl divers and merchants – and it remains connected to its roots, with a wealth of heritage crafts, traditional architecture and unique activities to discover. 1. Go diving for pearls

For 2,000 years, and long before the discovery of oil and gas, Bahrain’s economy was dependent on pearls. Local divers would scour the seabed for the finest examples, which were then exported overseas by wealthy merchants. These days, most of the world’s pearls are sourced from farms, but Bahrain still offers the chance to dive for oysters – and whatever you find, you can keep. There are five licensed pearl-diving operators in the Kingdom, while the UNESCO-listed Bu Maher Fort contains pearl-themed exhibits and photography.

2. Get to grips with Gulf history

If you only have time to tour one attraction, make it Bahrain National Museum. On the waterfront of Manama, the capital, this cultural institution is packed to the rafters with artefacts, photography and interactive exhibits, covering 5,000 years of local history. From jewellery and primitive tools excavated from ancient civilisations, to prized pearls and a 1930s Buick gifted to the first Emir of Bahrain, there is so much to see here. The state-of-the-art National Theatre of Bahrain is just next door, while the nearby ​​ Bait al Quran museum celebrates the history and artistry of the Quran, with a world-leading collection of Islamic texts.

3. Tour a traditional neighbourhood

Just like its Gulf neighbours, Bahrain’s modern skyline is dominated by high-rise towers and outlandish architecture – with the triangular-shaped World Trade Center as Manama’s eye-catching centrepiece. But refreshingly, the country also values its more traditional architecture, and has preserved the charming houses of Muharraq, its former capital. Here, the old pearl merchants’ mansions and courtyard villas feature hand-carved wooden doors, coral decoration and mashrabiya (patterned screens). As you wander, seek out ​​ Sheikh Isa bin Ali House , a former royal residence, and Kurar House for its beautiful embroidered textiles.

2. qalat al-bahrain.

Qalat al-Bahrain is a fortification complex that was built more than five thousand years ago (the number of towers increased later) and has been preserved almost in its original form. Bahrain, an archipelago of 33 islands in the Arabian Gulf, may be the smallest country in Arab world but it sure packs a punch for visitors. You won’t find the same level of glamour as in Dubai , but visitors can discover a country that is a crossroads of modern Arabian culture, religion and history, where all the riches of the Gulf can be seen alongside the remnants of bygone eras.

The skyscrapers of its diverse capital city, Manama, are neighbours of a range of architectural highlights, museums and characterful districts. In the desert, the rolling dunes house 4,000-year-old ruins and a Formula One race track, while along the coast an array of pristine beaches lie opposite beautiful uninhabited islands.

Those discovering this corner of the Gulf will be welcomed by a blend of modern city living and an immersion into history that makes Bahrain a fascinating country to visit. Here are some of the best things you can do.

Find culture and history in Manama

The capital, Manama, has undergone a rapid trasnformation since the country gained independence from Britain in 1971. Today it is home to around 700,000 people and many of the most important landmarks in the country.

The main religious centre is the Al Fateh Grand Mosque, a large, ornately decorated space that can hold 7,000 worshippers. The Kufic calligraphy and a vast fibreglass dome are particularly impressive, and tours run daily from 9am to 4pm, Monday to Thursday. Nearby, the Beit Al Quran houses a renowned Islamic museum and an extensive collection of Qurans (and related manuscripts) dating back centuries.

Elsewhere, the Bahrain National Museum chronicles around 6,000 years of history. It is housed in a magnificent limestone building on its own man-made island, and features exhibits such as Dilmun, Tylos and Islam and Traditional Trades and Crafts.

Head to the Al Fateh Corniche – the city’s waterside promenade – for a run, a long walk or just to sit in a green space by the water; it’s also a great place to watch the sunset). The Adliya district is known as the city’s most bohemian area, filled with galleries, bars, clubs and international restaurants, while Seef, the waterfront district, is best for shopping and nightlife. The Amwaj Islands – a collection of man-made islands in the Gulf – feature malls, the beautiful Solymar beach, an entertainment complex known as The Lagoon and even a mini waterpark for kids.

Wander through the Manama Souk

Also known as the Bab Al Bahrain souk, this is the capital’s large open-air market, where centuries of tradition meet modernity, mainly in the form of locals picking up foods, spices and clothing. It’s a network of narrow cobbled streets and alleyways crammed with animated vendors, offering as much of a cultural experience as you can get in Bahrain.

Take in the sounds, smells of spices, sweet shops and street food, or browse through dozens of stalls selling anything from hand-woven rugs and traditional clothing to jewellery and souvenirs. After you’ve finished haggling, stop for Arabian coffee and teas, samosas or shawarmas.

Traverse the desert

With much of the country located in the wider Arabian Desert area, an excursion onto the dunes is a popular activity. Sakhir is the main desert region; as well as being the site of the International Circuit (Bahrain’s motor racing course), it is home to vast expanses of golden dunes and undisturbed night skies. The desert activities aren’t as action-packed as the dune bashing or buggy tours that can be foundin other Gulf countries; instead, the majority of excursions are 4x4 safaris, camel rides, camping trips or guided tours.

VisitBahrain offers a four-hour guided tour of the desert for £60. It starts at 2pm every day at the International Circuit, where you begin by overlooking the track before moving on to the Royal Camel Farm and then the country’s very first oil well.

Visiting the Tree of Life, a standalone tree in the middle of the sands, is a highlight, while the last two stops are the Riffa Fort – a 200-year-old fort that used to be the Sheikh’s residence – and the A’Ali Burial Mounds, a 4,000-year-old burial site.

Visit an island

Most people only visit the main island (Bahrain Island) and Muharraq (home to its own city), though there are a few others that are worth visiting. Far from the development of Manama, they offer an oasis of calm with pristine beaches, clear waters and protected areas for the environment and wildlife.

The Al Dar Islands are the most popular to visit. They can be reached from Sitra (which itself lies 15 minutes away from Manama) via an eight-minute boat trip, costing roughly 8 BHD (£16). You’ll find locals mixing with tourists on the shores, admiring the crystalline waters while swimming or relaxing on the beach. For ultimate relaxation, you can rent beach huts for the day for £60, though the more adventurous may fancy a boat trip for fishing or dolphin spotting.

Hawar is the other main group, a 16-island archipelago that can be reached within 45 minutes from the Durrat Marina in the south of the country. Much of it is home to protected species such as dugongs, green turtles and sea birds. You can take day trips to the islands for around £40 (leaving at 8am and returning at 4pm), or, if you plan on visiting from 2024, you can stay in the only hotel on the islands, the soon-to-open Mantis Bahrain Hotel and Resort.

Go pearl diving

According to Unesco, “harvesting pearls from oyster beds in the Persian Gulf shaped the island of Bahrain’s economy for millennia”. The country was the best-known source of pearls since ancient times, with the industry peaking the early 20th century. Nowadays, the sites and oyster beds near Muharraq are a Unesco Heritage Site; as well as visiting, tourists can try an immersive experience and dive for pearls themselves.

Diving was only recently opened up to tourists and requires a diving pass (which costs around £11) and a booking with a licensed diving centre. Dives last for two hours and cost around £64; you are allowed to collect up to 60 oysters, and can keep any pearls that you find.

See archaeological ruins

Bahrain has a history dating back to the Dilmun civilisation, which was known to have inhabited the region as long ago as 3000BC. Amazingly, there are several ruins of this ancient civilisation that still stand around the country. The Qal’at al-Bahrain is the most important historical site (according to Unesco, it would have been the ancient capital of Dilmun), and the excavated areas include a sea tower, a northern city wall and parts of several palaces cemeteries, though the most intact feature is the Portuguese fort built on top of the mound in the 14th century.

In the west of the island, there are several Dilmun burial mounds (another Unesco site), while the Saar Heritage Park contains a burial complex, a Dilmun temple and the remains of a five-acre early Dilmun town. Nearby, the Barbar Temple contains the remains of a temple dedicated to the Dilmun water god, with many tools, weapons and ceramics from the excavation site now on display at the Bahrain National Museum.

Hit the beach

A day at the beach is a good option in Bahrain. Average temperatures can reach as high as 35C at the height of summer, and even in December and January they’ll range from 17C to 20C.

Bahrain Bay is popular with locals and tourists looking for entertainment near the centre of Manama, calm enough for swinning and with facilities for water sports. The largest beach is Al Jazayer, while Budaiya, Malkiya and Diraz have both natural beauty and more secluded, unspoilt locations. For parties, try Solymar, a beach club offering international cuisine alongside water sports and afternoon parties.

Take a trip to the International Circuit

Located in the heart of the Sakhir desert – roughly 30 minutes by car from Manama – the Bahrain International Circuit is mostly known as the host of the annual Bahrain Grand Prix, running since 2004 and usually taking place in March or April. Other major events at the course include the Bahrain Drag Racing Championships and the World Endurance Championships.

Open tours of the circuit are priced around £14, while visitors can drive a go-kart on part of the track, from £50 for a 30-minute session. Alternatively, you can ride as a passenger or drive your own Renault Clio (used in the BNI Clio Cup championship) or SR1, an entry-level race car.
