17 Fun Things to Do in Clarendon, Jamaica – 2023

Things to do in clarendon jamaica.

Now I have not had the opportunity to explore Clarendon as much as I would love to yet, so of course, you know this list is for us both. Things that we need to try and experience in the parish. Some areas you can visit when you visit there are Chapelton, Frankfield, Hayes, Rocky Point, Race Course, Lionel Town, May Pen, and Palmers Cross. This parish is not as often explored as other parishes in my opinion and that’s why I think it would be so much more fun to explore it and find and discover new areas and hidden gems. Usually, there are more options for things to do in May Pen.

Is Clarendon safe?

If you are visiting Clarendon, as I say with all parishes is no matter who you are and where you go always proceed with caution. If there are areas you don’t know, don’t go. Or ask questions or find someone who can take on the journey with you to help you feel more comfortable.

What is Clarendon known for?

Clarendon is the third biggest parish of Jamaica. When we hear Clarendon we think about bauxite and agriculture. The Rocky Point area is the area where bauxite is exported after it is mined and refined. It is also known for tobacco, sugar cane, livestock, and fish farming amongst others. Also, Milk River Bath which is found to the south of the parish is a well-known hot-spot in the area.

Take a little stroll through Empowerment Park with some friends or a loved one and just enjoy nature for a bit.

2. Go take a quick dip in Milk River Mineral Spa.✔✔✔

Maybe I shouldn’t have said quick dip, but you do want to definitely go ahead and have that Milk River experience, I remember doing it when I was younger and my plan is to visit there again soon to see what has changed, if anything much has changed.

3. Get a Juicy Beef Patty from the Headquarters. ✔✔✔

Once you are on a south coast journey you must and I repeat must stop at Juicy Beef and have a nice hot patty! I ALWAYS stop there once they are open of course lol.

4. Grab some food at Murray’s Fish and Jerk Hut .

Now Murray’s is a crowd favorite so most times it is a bit full. They have a loaded menu with some great choices whether it’s Pork, Fish, Rabbit, etc they have it..

5. Check out the May Pen Clock Tower .

6. Go hiking to the top of Bull Head Mountain to Johnson Crawle Waterfall. Check out Adventure from Elle for details about the experience .

7. Visit Johnson Crawle Waterfall.

8. Go explore Farquhars Beach . (You may not want to swim but it’s still cool to go check it out.)

9. Have a look at Halse Hall Great House if you can it has so much rich history to get familiar with.

This great house holds some history as far back as when the English captured Jamaica. It was given to Major Thomas Halse who was an officer in the army.

10. Visit Rocky Point Beach .

They say this is a hidden beach but if you can find it, go check it out.

11. Visit Salt River.

12. Have a look at some of the old railway stations.

This is just for the fun of it and to really embrace the cultural side of things, for all my history buffs who love to explore.

13. Go for a swim at St. Toolis River which is on the border of Clarendon and Manchester.

If you love rivers like myself you can find a nice spot here and have a good swim.

14. See if you can find Brae Head Falls – Hint: It is close to Crooked River Falls Community

Sometimes you have to go off the beaten path and find your way around.

15. Check out Rio Minho

16. Get some dinner at The Yard Bar and Grill.

17. Get the Clarendon Kayak Experience from Kayak Nation Ja.

Are there many things to do in May Pen?

May Pen is the capital of Clarendon, though it’s the capital the more exciting things to do are more outside of the capital. From the listing above I did name a few activities, other than that you can find a few street food spots and some restaurants. There really aren’t many attractions in Clarendon but if you look around you will find a few.

Where is Clarendon located?

The Parish is located in the southern part of the island almost centra l. The northern border is to St. Ann, the eastern border to St. Catherine and the western border to Manchester.

When you hear about this parish you don’t really hear about beaches so though there may be 1 or two odds are you may not see them being used for swimming. Clarendon on the southern part of the island. The parish is mostly flat except in the north and north-eastern sections. As a result, historians claim that if you fly over the parish, you will see Clarendon as a small town.

Between the Carpenter's Mountain (Manchester) in the west and the Braziletto Mountains. The Bull Head Mountain and Mocho Mountains also located in Clarendon is regarded as the geographical centre of Jamaica.

What is the capital of Clarendon?

May Pen, the capital of Clarendon, is situated on the banks of the Rio Minho and is supposed to have started with two inns. It was previously part of the Reverend William May estate, which was named after him.

Travelling to May Pen used to be a hard undertaking because people travelling from east to west had to stay at inns when Rio Minho was distinct. Many well-known members of the public are believed to have drowned while attempting to cross the river.

A bridge was later built. Houses were built over time, and the community became the town of May Pen.

Why is it called May Pen?

It was a part of an estate named after its owner, Reverend William May, a slave trader who was born in England but then moved to Jamaica.

The History of Clarendon Jamaica

Clarendon was named after Lord/Chancellor Edward Hyde, the first Earl of Clarendon, who served as one of Charles II's senior ministers. During the mid-nineteenth century, the parish of Clarendon absorbed parts of the old parishes of St. Dorothy and Vere.

Which ethnic group came to Clarendon?

The Tainos were the first to settle in the parish's southern plains, followed by the Spaniards. The growth of Clarendon began in the seventeenth century when Charles II granted land to former Commonwealth troops who had built sugar estates in the Rio Minho Valley, which is regarded as the earliest English settlement in Clarendon.

The names of these early settlers are still remembered in the valley, with localities like Ballard, Sutton, and Pennant bearing their names.

After the English took possession of the island from the Spaniards, they then established plantations in the plain in the following years. Cotton and indigo were the main crops grown, and indigo was used to make dye. The development of sugar cane unavoidably reduced the influence of cotton and indigo.

The development of canes in the plains was hampered by dry weather, but sugar could still be extracted. To help fix the problem, measures were put in place, including collecting water from the Rio Minho and the Milk River. However, this was short-lived due to the high cost.

The Slave Rebellion in Clarendon Jamaica

One of the earliest slave revolts in Jamaica took place at Sutton's Plantation in Clarendon in 1690. Because the land and the Great House were poorly protected, the runaways set fire to it. Many of the runaways were slain or apprehended later, while others joined the Maroons in the parish's northwestern reaches.

They continued to attack and burn numerous plantations at various sites. As a result, the government dispatched soldiers to the highlands in an attempt to defeat them. As the Maroons, commanded by Cudjoe, were eventually forced out of the Cave River Valley, first to the area near Ulster Spring and later into the Cockpit Country, the soldiers had some success. The Maroons had no more ties to the parish of Clarendon after then.

Carlisle Bay

Carlisle Bay, at Rocky Point, is located at the entrance of the Rio Minho on the south coast. It was named for the Earl of Carlisle, the Governor of Jamaica (1678- 1690). It serves as a poignant reminder of the major military engagement that occurred when the French invaded and sought to take Jamaica from the English.

England and France were at war in the 17th century, and the rivalry between the two countries expanded to the Caribbean. Because of the 1692 earthquake, the French Governor of St. Domingue (Haiti), Du Casse, believed that Jamaica was weak and could be easily taken.

He prepared to attack Jamaica in 1694. Jamaica, on the other hand, was not astonished because an English sailor who had been imprisoned at St. Dominique had already escaped and gone to Jamaica, where he broke the story. Sir William Beeston, the Governor, swiftly mobilized the militia and free men, as well as slaves, to repel the invasion. The French navy attacked on July 17, 1694.

The troops from Spanish Town arrived shortly after. The French were attacked right away and were forced to retreat and surrender. The governor of Jamaica decided to build Carlisle Fort the next year after the failed attack.

Clarendon, even though oftentimes overlooked, is rich in history and if for no other but to experience the healing of the mineral bath, you should definitely add the parish to your list of places to visit in Jamaica.

Historic Sites in Clarendon

St. Peter’s Church (Alley)  – One of the oldest Churches in the  island . It was founded in 1671.

May Pen Clock Tower  – The May Pen Clock Tower is made of stone. It is approximately twenty-four (24) feet in height, eight (8) feet in width, and eight (8) feet in length.

Halse Hall Great House  – When the English captured  Jamaica  in 1655, it was the custom to give officers of the army land grants. Halse Hall was given to Major Thomas Halse. On the site, Halse raised hogs, grazed cattle and built a house of thick walls.

Portland Point Lighthouse  – This lighthouse has the highest tower in the Island, standing at a height of 145 feet. This light is located at latitude 170 44′ 9″ north and 770 9′ 58″ west on the summit of the Portland Ridge near the southern most point of the Island. The Tower flashes a white light every 15 seconds.

Milk River Spa  – Another of Jamaica’s great spas. The Spa is located about ten (10) miles south of May Pen, Clarendon, and is open to the public. The radioactivity of the water is many times greater than many of the world’s famous spas.

Claude McKay’s Birthplace  – Birth place of internationally acclaimed writer and poet, born in the year 1889 in James Hill, Clarendon. In 1977 the  Government  on behalf of the people of Jamaica posthumously awarded Claude McKay the Order of Jamaica in respect and admiration for his great contribution to literature.

Four Paths Railway Station  – A two-story concrete building. The Four Paths Station is believed to have been constructed in the early 1900s.

Sutton’s Railway Station  – A Jamaica/Georgian timber house set on a stone base. This station was constructed in the early twentieth century.

Clarendon is a parish in Jamaica. It is located on the south of the island, roughly midway between the island's eastern and western ends. Bull Head Mountain, Clarendon

The Bull Head Mountains is a 545-acre mountain range located in north Clarendon. The mountain is named for its shape of a bull head when seen out from sea. Bull Head Mountain Peak is located at 3600 feet (1097m) above sea level, and the gentle trail which leads to it is one of the best hiking trails in Jamaica. The Rio Minho, Jamaica’s longest river, originates in the Bull Head Mountains and its natural spring water is bottled straight from the source. What’s even cooler about these mountains is that they contain the geographical centre of Jamaica and there’s a marker to prove it. The second most-populous parish, Clarendon is a major agricultural region with a lively market (Mon.\Sat.) by the square (or triangle) in its capital, May Pen. The parish, like all others in Jamaica, was originally settled by the Tainos, who were later pushed out by Spaniards who favored the area for cattle farming on their hatos or haciendas. Cotton and indigo became important crops during the early British period, before sugar took over later into the British colonial period. The parish developed as British troops settled on land granted to them as rewards for service by Charles II in the 17th century. Cudjoe, the Maroon leader, is said to have been the son of a slave on Sutton Plantation in Clarendon, the site of Jamaica's slave rebellion of 1690. Following emancipation, large numbers of Indian indentured laborers were brought in, forming the basis of a distinct cultural enclave that still exists today.

Visitors to May Pen will find virtually no tourism infrastructure, as the parish has little developed coastline and scarce attractions to excite the imagination of the short-term visitor. The undeveloped coastline can, on the other hand, be an attraction in and of itself, for the adventurous, and it is known to be dotted with caves in the vicinity of Portland Point. The brush-filled landscape in this same area is a favorite place for hunters to shoot birds in season for about five weeks starting in mid-August. The protected areas along the coast are the last place in Jamaica you have a good chance of seeing a manatee--native to the country's waters but severely endangered. The famous bathhouse in the parish, Milk River, warrants a visit if you're an old-school spa buff; if you're into hanging with the locals and taking a dip, try Salt River, where a spring wells up from the earth and sound systems blast music to bathers' delight.

Clarendon Jamaica Parish

Clarendon Jamaica Parish is approx 1196 sq km; bordered to the west by Manchester; St Catherine to the east with St Ann to the north. Clarendon is the fourth largest Jamaica parish and has the second highest population of 246,345 as at year end 2012.

Clarendon Parish is roughly half way between St Thomas and Westmoreland …the middle of the island so to speak.  May Pen is the capital and lies on the banks of the Rio Minho River.

The Rio Minho is the longest river in Jamaica at 92.8 km (57.7 mi).  It rises close to the island's geographic centre, flows generally south-southwest and reaches the Caribbean Sea at Carlisle Bay in the central south coast, to the west of the island's southern most Portland Point in Clarendon.  

Clarendon Jamaica - Denbigh Agricultural Show

The Denbigh Agricultural, Industrial and Food Show is a three day event held annually at the Denbigh showground, where exhibitors display the best of their products including ground produce and livestock.

The show is held during the first week of August and planned to coincide with the Jamaica Independence celebrations.

Milk River Baths  is visited by many local Jamaicans and visitors alike searching for the calmness and stimulants of a mineral bath.

There are those who believe that there are healing qualities gained from taking a mineral bath and those who just find it refreshing and different.

Whatever your reason, I found the waters soft, soothing and very relaxing.

Halse Hall Great House - Take a left at the roundabout at May Pen by pass and through the mineral heights community.  About a mile up the road on the right you will come to the entrance to the Halse Hall Great House, now a used as office space by the current owners.

This house is now owned by Alcoa Minerals of Jamaica and as a heritage site is opens for tours on appointment  - contact Mrs Chambers on 986 2561, to arrange a tour and learn about the history of this Great House.

Nature lovers will find plenty of things to do in Jamaica. You can hike and bird-watch in the jungle, or dive and snorkel along the fringing reefs. Jamaica is also renowned for its many historic plantations, where you can sample tropical fruits and tour the property. You'll also find some of the Caribbean's most luxurious all-inclusive resorts here.

Lively Montego Bay is one of the most popular resort towns. Ocho Rios is the island's major port of call for cruise ships, and Negril is famous for its long and lazy beach lined with clear waters and coconut palms. Dunn's River Falls is one of the top attractions in Ocho Rios . These gently terraced waterfalls tumble over rocks and limestone ledges into the sea.

You can climb the natural tiers to the top of the falls with the aid of a guide and cool off in the refreshing pools at the base. Alternatively, take a Jamaica Catamaran Cruise to Dunn's River Falls from Ocho Rios or Montego Bay. Snorkel over coral reefs, enjoy an ocean cruise, and relax and play in the water at the falls.

Seven Mile Beach, also known as Negril Beach, is one of Jamaica's most beautiful stretches of white sand and aqua sea. Backed by the famous Negril Cliffs, it's also one of the best beaches in Jamaica and a top place to visit for families.

Although it's actually closer to four miles long, the beach extends from Bloody Bay to Long Bay . Tucked within groves of coconut palms, resorts fringe the shore here, from large all-inclusive resorts to smaller boutique properties.

Water sports abound, and snorkelers will find schools of fish swimming in the clear waters. But be prepared for persistent hawkers prowling the beach. There are restrooms and changing rooms on hand, which is a plus for tourists traveling with children.

High in the rainforest-cloaked mountains outside Ocho Rios, the Blue Hole is a series of picturesque waterholes fed by gushing cascades. It's also called Island Gully Falls or the Irie Blue Hole.

Guides lead you around the area, where you can explore the falls and jump off cliffs into the refreshing pools below. The higher up the falls you climb, the less people you will probably encounter, but negotiating the trail can be tricky. The adventure involves clambering over slippery rocks, so appropriate water shoes are recommended.

Visiting these beautiful falls is one of the most popular things to do in Ocho Rios.

Ready for an adrenaline fix? Head to Rainforest Adventures Mystic Mountain in Ocho Rios. Here, you can zoom down the mountain on Bobsled Jamaica , a single-person roller coaster ride through the forest, or glide through the treetops on ziplines.

You can also enjoy panoramic views of the town and sea on the Sky Explorer , a chairlift ascending the mountain.

Other attractions here include guided nature walks, butterfly and hummingbird gardens, a ropes course, rides, an infinity pool and waterslide, and a climbing wall.

Built in 1770, Rose Hall is a restored plantation house with beautiful ocean views. Legendary Annie Palmer (the White Witch) ruled here with cruelty, and met a violent death. Today, her home is adorned with period furniture.

Rose Hall offers several tours . You can choose a day tour, but if you're a fan of ghost stories, opt for the spooky evening tour by candlelight. Guides dressed in character share plenty of spine-chilling tales of ghost sightings, and they'll definitely keep you on your toes. Who knows, you might even see the White Witch herself!

One of the best beaches in Montego Bay, Doctor's Cave Beach is an alluring strip of white sand fringed by clear waters.

Changerooms, restaurants, and shops are all available nearby, and you can rent beach equipment here, too. Note that there's a fee to access the beach.

This famous beach actually helped shape the fate of this popular tourist town. In the early 1920s, a famous British osteopath declared that the water had curative powers after swimming here, a claim that began to lure visitors from around the world. Hotels sprouted up, and the area became a thriving tourist destination.

The namesake cave was destroyed by a hurricane in 1932, but the beach is as popular as ever — hanging out here is one of the top things to do in Montego Bay, and it's often crowded with cruise ship passengers.

Rafting the Martha Brae is one of the most popular things to do in Jamaica for couples. At Martha Brae Rafter's Village, you can glide down a picturesque stretch of the river on bamboo rafts poled by local guides .
