Last time I had an urgent business trip, I went online to find a bus ticket and found Vexere by accident. After consulting, I decided to book and pay. It is very convenient and fast. Just a moment later, the bus operator contacted to confirm the ticket immediately and informed me of the estimated time of pick-up so that I could prepare. I was pretty surprised that the operator got my information so quickly. That trip was great. I will definitely continue to support Vexere.

Bus travel in Vietnam

In Vietnam, the bus is the cheapest and most convenient means of transport for tourists, since the bus system is well developed and can reach almost every part of the country. If you are stuck with the very first steps, such as how to find a bus or which route to follow, read this manual on how to best travel by bus in Vietnam.

On this page you will learn the following about traveling by bus in Vietnam:

Where to book bus tickets

Bus options, open bus ticket, how does it work, travel times by bus.

When you want to book a bus ticket in Vietnam you can either do that by yourself online or with a travel agent, hotel or at the bus station. Keep in mind that during holidays in Vietnam , especially Tet New Year, you have to book way in advanced due to lack of availability.

There are a couple of reliable websites were you can online book your Vietnam bus tickets.

Tips for booking online:

  • Research good were you have to go. Some destinations don’t have a (big) bus station, which means you have to travel to a big city close to it and from their take a taxi or local bus. Ex. for Hoi An you often have to take the bus to Da Nang and for Phong Nha a bus to Dong Hoi.
  • Check the right name of the location. Sometimes when you use the search engines of these bus companies, you can not find the destination, because you write it wrong. Ex. Dalat or Da Lat, Danang or Da Nang, Halong Bay, Ha Long or Halong City.
  • When you don’t find availability on one website, check one of the other websites. It is possible that each websites can show availability of a different bus company. So if one bus company does not have space, then maybe another bus company still has.

You can book bus ticket at almost every travel agent in Vietnam and also most hotels and hostels can book for you. In most cases they earn a small commission, but sometimes they also add up a small fee. The cheapest tickets you can get at the bus station itself, but they are often not convenient located outside the city centre.

The national bus network is slowly being upgraded, the rickety old buses being replaced by air-conditioned models, especially on the more popular routes. The journey can be slow because buses often stop to pick up passengers or make breaks.

Sleeper bus (night bus)

Modern air-conditioned buses run between the most important cities. You are certain of an allocated seat and sufficient space. Most have comfortable reclining seats, others have loungers for long journeys. These sleeping buses can be a good alternative to trains and the costs are comparable. The benefit of a sleeper bus is that it does not cost you a day of travelling and a night in an hotel.

night bus in Vietnam,

Between some destinations you have VIP buses. They are very limited, so if you want to use these buses it is wise to book them in advanced. In these buses you have a lot more space, more comfort and also include WiFi.

Alternatives

The alternative for travelling by bus in Vietnam are the mini buses. You have different qualities, but the most popular one are the limousine. One of the difference is that these limousine mini buses mostly drive during day, while the regular long distance buses are mostly night buses (sleeper bus).

mini bus in Vietnam

Local buses run shorter distances and are a lot less luxurious. This makes it a lot less comfortable. These buses only run during the day. Local buses are often busy and drivers sometimes charge higher prices to tourists. Therefore not really popular with travellers.

In backpacker spots throughout Vietnam, you see many signs with advertisements for “Open Tour” or “Open Ticket”. These open bus tickets are primarily aimed at foreign budget travelers. Air-conditioned buses run between Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi (and other routes) and passengers can go and get off the bus in any major city along the route. If you want to interrupt your journey and then pick it up again, you only have to phone the organization one day before departure.

In general, open tour buses are a fairly comfortable way to travel through Vietnam: they have air conditioning, a limited number of seats and fixed timetables. In addition, the fact that they don’t stop so often to pick up people makes it faster, and the competition is fierce that prices are almost as low as those for the national bus network. Buses are usually quite decent, but don’t expect too much legroom or toilets on board; some of the more expensive bus services they have, but the vast majority will stop there every few hours for a combined toilet and snack break.

Example: You buy an open bus ticket in Ho Chi Minh City and reserve a place for the bus to Dalat. Now you have made 1 stop. After a few days in Dalat, your hotel can call the bus company to reserve a place for the bus to Nha Trang.

open bus ticket Vietnam

Cost of open bus ticket

The buses are comfortable and extremely cheap. Depending on the operator and the exact route, Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi is $ 35 to $ 70 and HCMC to Hue is around $ 25. The more stops you add, the higher the price. Buses usually depart from central locations (often hostels that are popular with travelers), so you don’t have to make an extra trip to the bus station. Some buses with open tour also stop alongside sights along the way.

Boarding places for open bus ticket

The most popular stops for the open bus ticket are:

  • Ho Chi Minh City

Pay attention

  • If you lose your open bus ticket, you cannot get a refund.
  • If you have chosen a bad bus company, you will be burdened with it the entire trip
  • You must adhere to the daily schedule of the bus company.
  • If you want to go somewhere else, such as to Sapa, you have to buy a separate bus ticket for that.
  • Buying separate tickets only costs a little more (or nothing at all), but still gives you more freedom.

Open bus companies

The most popular open bus companies:

  • The Sinh Tourist (most recommended)

How to get to the bus station

Cities can have different bus stations. It may be that one bus station does not have the same connections than another bus station in the same city. For that reason, always first find out at which bus station you should be. There may also be a difference between the type of service (local or long-distance, express or no express) and some bus companies have their own station. Bus stations can look chaotic, but many now have a ticket agency with official prices and departure times clearly displayed.

Buses departing from smaller cities like Dalat and Ninh Binh, always include a pick up from your hotel. In this case a minibus will pick you up and bring you to the bus station.

In the bus you always have a fixed seat. The number of your seat you can find on your ticket. If you prefer a seat in the front of the bus and top or bottom bunk in a night bus, it is wise to tell you preferences at booking. The bus often stops half way at a special bus stop. Here you can find toilets, a restaurant and one or a few shops to buy some snacks and drinks.

Arriving on your destination

When you arrive in a small or medium sized city there is also a drop off at your hotel included. You arrive at the bus station and a minivan will bring you to your accommodation. In large cities like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City you have to take a taxi or walk (but not all bus stations are not directly in the city centre) .

Bus accidents are not uncommon and increase regularly at night. Vehicles are often poorly maintained. Keep valuables with you and do not put them at the bottom of the bus. Some bus companies have a better reputation than others in both the quality of drivers and buses.

Why book with us?

We offer the best customer service for bus travel in Vietnam. With WhatsApp and Kakao support, you can reach us any time, with any questions, whenever you need help. We only operate in Vietnam - we are a local, not an international company - and because of that we know more about bus travel in Vietnam than anybody else. Give us a try, you won't be disappointed!

Your Questions Answered

Who are you?

Vietnam Bus Tickets is by operated by Adventure Nam, travel specialists based in Mui Ne, Vietnam. Adventure Nam is owned and operated by European residents in Vietnam. Our office is in Mui Ne, we're experts in Vietnamese travel and we're on hand to help you while you're here on holiday.

How quickly can I get a ticket?

If you book within office hours (7.30am - 5pm) we may be able to get you a bus ticket reservation for the same day - give it a try! You will normally receive your ticket by email within 24 hours of booking - faster for short notice bookings.

Where do I catch the bus?

That depends on where you're leaving from! Also (more seriously), it depends on the bus company, and your route. It will either be from a bus office, or you'll be collected from outside your hotel - if this is the case, you'll be prompted for the hotel name and address at time of booking, so make sure that information is correct when you book your ticket. Once you're booked, we will give you all the information you need to find or meet your bus.

How can I pay?

You can pay for your Vietnam bus ticket online, using any major credit, charge or bank card - we also offer many other payment methods, for example Alipay. Just complete the booking form on the booking page and press Book Now, and we'll collect payment details on the next page.

What are the sleeper buses like?

Generally, brilliant. Pretty comfortable, so much nicer than a standard seated bus, we love them. But if you’re over 6 foot (1.83cm) you won’t be able to fully stretch out. It still beats having your knees sticking in the back of the seat in front of you though.

What are the seated buses like?

Often very comfortable, with quite a bit of recline, and reasonable legroom. But please note the “often” – some routes just don’t have great buses on them, and sometimes the buses need to be small, because the roads are small.

We are now offering limousine buses on several routes, and these are really fabulous - business-class airline style reclining seats, loads of legroom, personal USB chargers, wifi and in some cases even your own "back of the seat" TV screen with entertainment system and headphones. They are a bit more expensive but definitely worth the spend - these limousine VIP buses are our all-time favourites!

We do our best to find our customers the best buses on all routes throughout Vietnam.

I can't find the bus route I want!

Then please contact us with exact details of the bus or route in Vietnam that you're looking for, and we'll do our best to get you the ticket you want.

Getting around Vietnam by bus

Road transport conditions in Vietnam are rapidly improving with the construction of new expressways, although the main network still consists of national roads and provincial roads.

The National Route 1A traverses the country connecting Hanoi, Hue, Da Nang, Nha Trang, and Ho Chi Minh, meanwhile the new North-South Expressway runs parallel and is partially under construction.

The Hanoi–Hai Phong–Ha Long Expressway and Hanoi–Lao Cai Expressway were developed recently and have shortened the travel time from the capital to the mountains in the Northwest and the coast in the Northeast, whereas the Ho Chi Minh City–Trung Luong Expressway facilitates the access from the Southern metropolis to the Mekong Delta.

Northern Vietnam

The city of Hanoi offers an enchanting blend that combines traditional Vietnamese architecture, French colonial buildings and beautiful lake scenery. The capital is also the main transportation hub in Northern Vietnam with many buses and minivans departing from the main stations Gia Lam, Giap Bat, My Dinh and Nuoc Ngam, and the representative offices of the companies in Hoan Kiem District.

Exercise patience and courtesy during boarding and disembarking, prioritizing the elderly and individuals with disabilities. Refrain from engaging in loud conversations, disruptive behavior, or playing music without headphones to uphold a tranquil and respectful ambiance for fellow passengers. Understanding bus companies in Vietnam

Buses are a popular way to travel between tourist destinations in Vietnam. However, the quality of the bus companies isn’t always up to travellers’ expectations. With over 25 private bus companies operating on popular routes, they all vary in service and comfort standards.

There are a couple of companies that receive a lot of criticism, but as they are often the cheapest choice, travellers keep booking with them. Among the major complaints are rude drivers and unprofessional staff. Many times, 5-hour journeys end up being 7 hours or more because the buses make too many stops.

On the other hand, there are bus companies in Vietnam that offer clean and spacious buses as well as depart and arrive on time. These are rare gems, to be honest.

Also, it is important to keep in mind that buses in Vietnam are neither as safe nor as comfortable as trains or planes.

So, why travel by bus?

A bus can be the easiest and quickest way to reach your next destination. They often pick you up and drop you off in the centre of town (some even offer free hotel pick-up and drop-off). And they travel directly from point A to point B — unlike trains, where you often have to make a transfer.

Night buses in Vietnam

Thanks to the comfortable reclining seats and sleeper bunks on most buses, you can also get a good rest during the trip. This makes the night bus a convenient travel option when it’s available. You hop on the bus in the evening and wake up relatively refreshed the next morning at your new destination.

Of course, this only happens when you pick a good bus company.

Which bus companies in Vietnam are the best?

We’ve written an in-depth review of 22 bus companies below . It’s a thing of beauty, really.

But if you need the answers here and now, we get it. Here’s what you need to know in a nutshell before you book that bus ticket.

If you’re travelling in North Vietnam , you’ve got choices. There are several highly-rated bus companies that operate throughout the north: Cat Ba Discovery , Cat Ba Express , Good Morning Cat Ba , Hung Long , Interbus Lines and Sapa Express . They aren’t without flaws (think Wi-Fi not working or no toilet on board) but they generally have a good track record of getting travellers where they need to get and on time. Which, when it comes to bus companies in Vietnam, is a win. Trust us.

Heading to Central and South Vietnam? For some reason, there aren’t as many great bus companies in the south as there are in the North. Try booking your trip with Phuc Thuan Thao (comfortable, clean and on time) or Kumho Samco (affordable, clean and comfortable, but the driving can be a bit mad). If you’re going from Hue to Phong Nha , DMZ Tours is a great choice to get there and back.

And in case you’re wondering, the lowest-rated bus companies in Vietnam are Camel Travel and Queen Cafe VIP Bus. Steer clear if you want a comfortable ride.

2. Camel Travel

TripAdvisor rating : 1.5/5 (437 reviews)

Camel Travel operates buses in some of the most popular destinations in Vietnam. However, foreign tourists aren’t big fans of this company .

Major concerns include rude drivers and staff, bad driving, late departures and overall poor customer service. There have also been several complaints of drivers smoking and talking on the phone non-stop so if you really must take Camel Travel, stay away from the front seats.

Extra services: water, Wi-Fi (not always reliable), electrical outlet, blanket

Destinations: Da Nang, Hanoi, Hoi An, Hue, Phong Nha

3. Cat Ba Discovery

TripAdvisor rating : 4.5/5 (291 reviews)

Operating on the Cat Ba-Ninh Binh and Cat Ba-Sapa routes, Cat Ba Discovery is known for providing passengers with good service .

Travellers have nothing but praise for their polite drivers, accommodating staff and comfortable buses.

Extra services: water, Wi-Fi, blanket

Destinations: Cat Ba, Ninh Binh, Sapa

4. Cat Ba Express

TripAdvisor rating : 5/5 (1,189 reviews)

This transport company is popular among travellers in North Vietnam.

Cat Ba Express provides quality service and offers good travel packages and guides for the Cat Ba-Sapa and Cat Ba-Hanoi routes. They are also helpful when it comes to ferry transfers.

Extra services: water, tissues

Destinations: Hanoi, Cat Ba, Ninh Binh, Sapa

5. DMZ Tours

Facebook rating : 4.7/5 (25 reviews)

The DMZ Bus is a popular way to travel from Hue to Phong Nha . This allows tourists to make a side trip to the Vinh Moc Tunnels and Ben Hai River Museum — and gives them a glimpse into Vietnam’s history.

There are a few companies offering the DMZ Bus Tour, but some have temporarily suspended operations in light of COVID-19. We recommend booking your DMZ Bus with Sy’s Homestay in Phong Nha. The owner has a reputation among foreign travellers as being friendly and accommodating .

Destinations: Hue, Phong Nha

6. Good Morning Cat Ba

TripAdvisor rating : 4/5 (824 reviews)

Good Morning Cat Ba provides great transport services to five major destinations in Vietnam. They also offer popular tour packages.

Some positive reviews include friendly staff, prompt drivers and nice buses. However, a few passengers have mentioned that the seats are too small.

Extra services: water, Wi-Fi, cold towel, blanket

Destinations: Cat Ba, Ha Giang, Hanoi, Hai Phong, Sapa

7. Good Morning Sapa

*Temporarily closed* (October 2022)

TripAdvisor rating : 4.5/5 (294 reviews)

Good Morning Sapa mainly operates buses from Hanoi to Sapa and vice versa. They get good reviews for their local guides and package tours .

Their buses are clean and they provide good extra services. However, bus drivers can be rude and hard to communicate with. They also tend to drive fast, even on hills and winding roads.

Extra services: water, Wi-Fi, charging outlet, blanket

Destinations: Halong Bay, Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Sapa

8. Hanh Cafe

12go.Asia rating : 3.8/5 (428 reviews)

Hanh Café is one of the more well-known bus companies in Vietnam . They offer comfortable buses and are often regarded as good value for money.

However, there have been complaints about their rude office staff. They also often leave much later than the expected time.

Destinations: Da Lat, Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh, Hoi An, Hue, Mui Ne, Nha Trang, Phan Thiet

9. Hoang Long

12go.Asia rating : 3.2/5 (382 reviews)

Hoang Long gets more negative than positive feedback . Its buses are often delayed and many passengers have complained that it does not live up to its advertisements — like free food and toilet onboard.

Destinations: Cat Ba, Hai Phong, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh, Hue

10. Hung Long

Vexere rating : 4.9/5 (30 reviews)

Hung Long operates a few routes from Hanoi and it’s mostly used by locals. Its buses offer comfortable seats and good legroom .

The only concern is that some passengers have complained about bugs in the bus.

Destinations: Dong Hoi, Ha Tinh, Hanoi, Phong Nha

11. Hung Thanh

Google Maps rating : 2.7/5 (107 reviews)

Hung Thanh operates between popular tourist destinations in northern Vietnam. When it comes to availability, you can generally count on Hung Thanh to offer several trips every day.

This company gets a lot of bad reviews , however. These include delayed departures, overloading, rude staff, and dirty buses. While they normally offer cheap fares, we think that you’ll be better off spending your money with another bus operator.

Destinations: Hanoi, Hoi An, Hue, Ninh Binh, Phong Nha

12. Interbus Lines

Google Maps rating : 4.6/5 (907 reviews)

Interbus Lines is a highly-rated company providing transport services between Hanoi and Sapa . They also offer packaged tours.

Passengers praise its new buses, spacious beds, professional staff, and competitive fares.

Extra services: water, Wi-Fi, electrical outlet, blanket

Destinations: Hanoi, Sapa

13. Kumho Samco

12go.Asia rating : 4/5 (537 reviews)

This company is known for providing bus services in southern Vietnam, mainly from Ho Chi Minh to Phnom Penh and back. Their buses are clean and comfortable — well worth their affordable fares .

Some foreign passengers have raised concerns about the company’s poor customer service. In their defence, this sometimes stems from the staff’s lack of command of English.

Also, there have been complaints of Kumho Samcho staff charging a service fee for passengers requiring a visa to cross the border between Vietnam and Cambodia. We recommend preparing your e-visa beforehand and knowing the rules so that you won’t fall victim to this scam.

Extra services: water, Wi-Fi

Destinations: Da Lat, Ha Tien, Ho Chi Minh, Mui Ne, Nha Trang, Rach Gia

14. Lien Hung

Vexere rating : 3.8/5 (1,791 reviews)

Lien Hung’s negative reviews outnumber the positive ones . The one thing passengers have consistently complimented is the spacious legroom in their buses.

But other than that, this company has mostly received complaints. These include rude staff, fast and uncomfortable driving, wrong bus bookings and overall bad service.

Extra services: water, blanket

Destinations: Da Nang, Ha Tien, Ho Chi Minh, Hue, Nha Trang, Phan Thiet, Quy Nhon

15. Phuc Thuan Thao

Vexere rating : 4.6/5 (407 reviews)

The only common complaint against Phuc Thuan Thao is that their staff/crew can be rude. Otherwise, expect a comfortable ride in clean buses .

Extra services: wi-fi, charging sockets

Destinations: Quy Nhon, Da Nang, Nha Trang, Da Lat, Tuy Hoa, Ho Chi Minh

16. Phuong Trang (Futa Bus)

TripAdvisor rating : 3/5 (547 reviews)

Phuong Trang (also known as Futa Bus) is widely recognized in Vietnam. Their orange-coloured buses are highly distinctive and are available throughout central Vietnam and destinations along the Mekong Delta.

While Futa Bus is praised for its comfortable buses, its staff and drivers can fall short. This bus company has received complaints of poor customer service, particularly when dealing with foreign passengers .

Destinations: Da Lat, Da Nang, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh, Hue, Mui Ne, Nha Trang, Quy Nhon, Rach Gia

17. Quang Anh

Facebook rating : 3.3/5 (63 reviews)

Quang Anh provides limousine bus services between Ninh Binh, Hanoi and Sapa. With limited trips, this company is not as well-known to tourists as other bus companies in Vietnam.

It’s popular among locals, however, for its luxurious and comfortable vehicles . Unfortunately, they provide poor customer service and sometimes try to charge foreigners higher ticket prices.

Destinations: Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Sapa

18. Queen Cafe VIP Bus

TripAdvisor rating : 1.5/5 (97 reviews)

Queen Cafe VIP Bus is an ironic name — because passengers are rarely ever treated as VIPs . In reality, this Vietnamese bus company needs to improve its overall customer service.

There have been more than a few incidents of scamming as well as discrimination against Caucasian-looking passengers. However, Queen Cafe is still one of the larger bus operators and often you don’t have many other companies to choose from.

Extra services: water, Wi-Fi, blanket, cold towel

Destinations: DaLat, Da Nang, Hanoi, Hoi An, Ho Chi Minh, Hue, Ninh Binh, Phong Nha, Sapa

19. Sao Viet

Vexere rating : 4.3/5 (743 reviews)

Sao Viet is a popular bus company in Vietnam servicing the route between Hanoi and Sapa, offering over a dozen trips daily.

Their buses range from cheap sleeper buses to luxurious VIP cabins — generally clean and comfortable, despite the cheap fares . However, their staff’s demeanour toward customers could be improved.

Destinations: Hanoi, Yen Bai, Sapa

20. Sapa Express

Sapa Express is a trusted company for buses operating between Hanoi and Sapa as well as Hanoi and Halong Bay. Customers praise its good customer service and spacious buses.

An advantage of taking Sapa Express is that they allow passengers to stay and sleep on the bus upon arrival in Sapa in the early morning until the accommodations open up for the day. Not all bus companies in Vietnam allow this.

It’s worth noting though that they do not provide seat numbers, which is why passengers often rush into the bus to get a good seat or bed.

Extra services: water, snacks, Wi-Fi, blanket

Destinations: Halong Bay, Hanoi, Sapa

21. Sapa Grouptour

12go.Asia rating : 3.6/5 (1,294 reviews)

Grouptour operates between popular tourist destinations in northern Vietnam, mainly on the Hanoi-Sapa route.

This company offers generally comfortable buses. However, there have been more than a few complaints about drivers driving too fast, delayed departures and miscommunication that ended up with customers not being picked up from their hotels.

Destinations: Cat Ba, Da Nang, Ha Giang, Hanoi, Sapa

22. The Sinh Tourist

Google Maps rating : 3.9/5 (678 reviews)

The Sinh Tourist operates mostly within the central and southern regions of Vietnam. Their service is generally satisfactory and their buses are known to depart and arrive on time, if not earlier.

There have been a few concerns regarding their affiliations, though, like local agencies trying to scam tourists. When booking with The Sinh Tourist, we recommend doing so online instead of via tour agencies.

Destinations: Dalat, Da Nang, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh, Hoi An, Hue, Mui Ne, Nha Trang

Bus in Vietnam

  • 1. Inter-provincial buses
  • 2. Local buses
  • 3. Bus travel tips

In Vietnam, bus is the cheapest and most convenient means of transportation for foreign travellers, since the bus system has been well-developed and covered almost every part of the country. If you are stuck on the very first steps such as how to find a bus or which route to go, stay calm and read the following guide.

Inter-provincial buses

Each province in Vietnam has its own major terminal, especially in big cities like Hanoi (My Dinh Bus station, Giap Bat Bus station), Ho Chi Minh City (Mien Tay, Mien Dong); you can find buses going to every tourism destination as well as other province in Vietnam. Typically, inter-provincial buses are high quality ones with good services, large and comfortable seats. All you have to do is to buy tickets from registered ticket booths inside the terminal, and later show it to the conductor on the bus. There is no limitation for the size of baggage.

travel bus vietnam

The price depends on the distance of the route and type of seats chosen. Tourists can ask their travel agencies to purchase ticket in advance, or even book ticket via phone or Internet by themselves. Notice that Internet booking bus ticket is not very popular, only applicable to a few large bus companies like Hoang Long. If you depart from minor provinces and there is no direct route to your intend destinations, it is advisable to catch a bus to major cities (Hanoi for northern provinces, Hue or Da Nang for central area, and Ho Chi Minh City for southern provinces) and then change the bus there.

Local buses

In Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and some major tourism destinations, there is public bus service for people both local and foreigners. Those buses also departure from major terminals before heading to other streets. In other provinces, we also have buses run by private companies. Passengers can catch bus at bus stops scattering around the province and buy ticket directly from the conductor. Although the ticket is very cheap (under VND 10000), the service is not very high (you may have to stand if the bus is too crowded, the bus may not have air conditioner, or the conductor cannot speak English). However, local bus is one interesting way to understand more or make friends with local people.

Bus travel tips

• Only buy bus tickets from registered booths of large companies inside the terminals. Some prestigious names to mention are Hoang Long, Viet Thanh, Sinh café, Hanh Café and Mai Linh. Avoid waiving bus along the way for your own safety reasons (those buses may run around the cities until it collects enough passengers, which may take hours)

• Ask the price before hopping on or you may be overcharged. Normally, ticket price is the same to everyone.

• Bring along with you a piece of paper and a pen to write down your destination or questions, as language barrier can cause difficulties.

• Keep strict eye on your luggage and wallet, especially if using public and local bus.

• Do not hesitate to ask the conductor, the driver or even your fellow passengers if there is anything making you confused. Vietnamese are very friendly; they will be more than willing to help you.

Vietnam Bus Travel Guide: All You Need To Know

Traveling by bus is one of the cheapest and easiest ways to get around Vietnam . However, it can feel quite intimidating and confusing, and it’s a pain if you’re taking long bus rides .

If you’re planning to visit Vietnam and want to travel by bus, read this Vietnam bus travel guide for some tips that you should know.1

Where to buy bus tickets?

You can buy bus tickets online or at your hotel, bus station, or with a travel agent. I find it’s best to buy online as it’s more convenient and get the best prices.

Please note that during weekends or holidays in Vietnam, such as Tet Holiday , you should book in advance to guarantee that you’ll have your seats.

I usually book my bus tickets online with 12go , a trusted transportation company.

Why you should book online

  • Diverse, competitive fare. It’s easy to compare ticket prices without worrying about getting overcharged with “tourist prices.”
  • Find a flexible departure time. With many departures, you can actively arrange your time and easily choose the right trip.
  • Book your trip easily with confirmation procedures and highly secure and safe payment. You can book any time of the day—no need to stay up late to get tickets.

Tips for booking bus tickets online

  • Check the correct name of the location. Vietnamese names can be confusing, and you don’t want to book your trip wrong.
  • Check the drop-on drop-off points. Although many providers offer to pick up or drop off at your hotels, some don’t. Knowing this information helps you arrange your trip better.
  • Each website can have different bus company availability, so check all of them if you need to.

2. At your hotel or travel agency

Another option that you can do is to book with a travel agency.

However, it’s challenging to find a legit travel agency because there’re many fake and copycat ones, so you may end up traveling on a bad-condition bus.

3. Bus stations

Bus stations usually offer reasonable prices for tickets, but they are usually located inconveniently outside the city center. Also, there’re lots of brokers that may harass and trick you into buying a higher price.

If you get to the bus station, make sure to go straight to the ticket office.

There are four types of buses in Vietnam: seated buses, sleeper buses, minivans, and public buses.

1. Seated bus

Seated buses are usually for long-distance trips.

The large ones can carry 30 to 45 passengers, while minibusses can have a capacity of between 15 to 30 passengers.

Most seated buses offer air-conditioners, water, and cold towels.

You will see most of them with routes such as Hanoi to Cat Ba or vice versa.

2. Sleeper bus (night bus)

Recently, sleepers buses have become a popular choice for travelers for long-distance travel as it’s more comfortable than seated buses.

If you travel at night, I highly recommend sleeper buses.

Most sleeper bus has three rows with two floors with seats that can be raised or lowered with a button. They also have bottled water, refreshing towels, and air conditioning.

Some deluxe types have private cabins with curtains, pillows, soft leather seats, blankets, and wifi.

3. Minivans

Minivans, or limousines, generally cover short-distance travel. My most common trips with limousines take 2 to 4 hours, such as traveling from Ho Chi Minh to Vung Tau .

The most common minivans in Vietnam are Ford Transit and Hyundai Solati, with the interiors refurbished to accommodate seven passengers, nine passengers, or 12 passengers, depending on the model.

Also, the passenger seats are equipped with utilities such as soft leather seats that can recline for relaxation, reading lights, audio equipment, charging ports, entertainment, and ceiling light effects.

It’s usually quite pleasant to travel with minivans. They pick up and drop off at your hotel, and it’s faster than traveling by big bus.

However, some minivan drivers drive fast and carelessly, which can be a problem.

4. Public buses

Public buses run during the daytime and connect spots in the same city or neighboring provinces.

However, they are much less comfortable and usually difficult to predict when it arrives if you’re catching one in a small town.

Once, we had to wait almost an hour to catch a bus from Phan Rang to the city’s northern area.

Although they are not popular for travelers, you can save lots of money with them instead of taking a taxi.

For example, you can take a local bus to travel from Dong Hoi to Phong Nha (about 50 km) if you travel on a budget.

Tips : If you plan to take public buses in Ho Chi Minh, check the bus routes here .

What to pack when traveling by bus?

Here are a few tips to make your trip easier.

1. Pack light

Make sure you have two bags, one large for luggage and one smaller for purses, refreshments, and some common medications.

This will save you from having to find things in a large pile of luggage. Also, you’ll have more spacious and comfortable seats as you can store your luggage under the bus or on the roof.

2. Bring some snacks

Although long-distance buses will stop at certain points for customers to buy food or go to the bathroom, you may feel hungry at other times.

So, bring some snacks such as candy to eat when you feel hungry and recharge for the upcoming journey.

3. Bring a mask, earplugs, or earphones

If you’re catching an overnight bus or want to take a nap, just put on a mask and take a nap.

Also, bringing headphones and listening to soothing music relaxes and makes the journey feel shorter.

4. Bring hand sanitizer

Some stops don’t have sanitizer, so it’s better to bring your hand sanitizer and wet tissues.

5. Don’t forget water

Most bus operators often provide passengers with small bottles of water, but not every one of them.

Take the initiative to bring a bottle of water to drink when thirsty and avoid using carbonated soft drinks.

Rough roads and roadside foods combined with carbonated soft drinks can cause trouble for your digestive system.

Travel by Bus in Vietnam

travel bus vietnam

Traveling around Vietnam you have three main options for getting from city to city: airplane, train, or bus. While planes are the fastest, they can be more expensive and, let’s be honest, you’re not actually going to get to see much of this scenic country from 35,000 feet! Trains run almost the entire length of Vietnam and provide amazing views of the coast as you chug along at low speeds, but they’re best for getting from one major city to another, not for visiting some of the smaller and more rural places. So that leaves the bus. Bus travel in Vietnam is a very popular way to get around because it’s so affordable and it’s great for anyone trying to see the far-reaches of this country because the network is so extensive. Getting to grips with traveling by bus in Vietnam can be daunting, but a quick read of our guide should have you on your way in no time!

Is it Safe to Travel by Bus in Vietnam?

Is it safe to travel by bus in Vietnam

Many Asian countries have bad reputations when it comes to road conditions and erratic drivers, and unfortunately Vietnam is no exception. Don’t allow this to put you off of bus travel entirely though. The condition of the roads across Vietnam has improved a great deal in recent years, and if you’re traveling on the major routes your journey should be quite smooth. It’s when you get out into the more rural areas that the roads will deteriorate somewhat.

And then there’s the drivers – traveling by bus within Vietnam’s cities can be quite a hair-raising experience as buses, cars and a plethora of motorbikes all compete for road space. On the inter-provincial buses (so that’s the long distance ones) you can expect a calmer drive. These are operated by private bus companies and they will use the main highways except when going into cities for bus station pickups and drop-offs. Even on the main highways, the average speed is not fast. Expect it to be somewhere around 50 to 60 km/h (30 to 37.5 mph), which means it can take an excruciatingly long time to get anywhere.

Where to Buy Your Tickets for Bus Travel in Vietnam

Where you buy your tickets for bus travel in Vietnam depends upon what type of bus you’re using, so let’s talk about the different bus options right now.

Local Buses in Vietnam

Local buses in Vietnam

If you’re traveling around a city or going a short distance from one town to another, local buses are what you’ll use. Jam-packed and not particularly comfortable, even when you’re sitting, these buses are frequented by locals but not so much by tourists. For one thing, they travel around picking up as many passengers as possible along the way, regardless of whether there are any spare seats onboard. It’s very likely you will be standing, and, as a foreigner it’s likely the conductor will over charge you as well. Tickets for local buses in Vietnam can be bought as you board the bus, so this makes it easy if you’re hopping on, and they should be very cheap, even if you are overcharged. Overcrowding and uncomfortable conditions (such as being too hot) are problems though, so we wouldn’t recommend using these buses often – maybe only when you can’t find any other alternative.

Interprovincial Buses in Vietnam

Interprovincial buses in Vietnam

The Interprovincial buses are a different story. These are high-end buses which are larger and way more comfortable, and you won’t encounter overcrowding as tickets are sold by allocated seat. Known by some as ‘deluxe buses’, they provide more space and may have reclining seats, or even beds – see below for more information on Sleeper Buses. They are also non-smoking and should have air conditioning, plus a few other services could be included such as onboard wi-fi, TVs, toilets, and steward service.

Deluxe Buses depart from the major bus terminals in big cities and there are routes to all major cities and popular tourism destinations across the country. They are obviously much faster than the local buses because they don’t stop everywhere to pick up passengers, however, they most likely will stop at the major cities along the way, as well as for meal breaks.

There are a number of reputable private bus companies operating across Vietnam, including Hoang Long, The Sinh Tourist, and Mai Linh Express. You can buy tickets for these and other companies direct from the bus terminal or from the bus company’s offices, but if you find this a little daunting, we would highly recommend using an online booking service such as 12Go . Not only can you compare the different bus companies via their website, but you can also check out the other ways in which you can travel the route you want. 12Go also has reviews from customers who have booked through them so you can read honest feedback on the booking process and feedback on what the buses were like to use.

Although you won’t always have to book your tickets in advance, we would always recommend that you do so, whenever possible. Booking through 12Go you can plan your trip weeks ahead knowing that you have the tickets organized already, but, during particularly busy periods – such as during Tet; late January or early February – booking as far in advance as possible is a must as thousands of locals will be traveling long distances to visit family or to spend vacation time.

Sleeper Bus in Vietnam

Sleeper bus in Vietnam

A good alternative to trains with sleeper berths, sleeper buses connect major cities in Vietnam providing a more comfortable way to travel the long distances. If you are traveling a long way, we strongly recommend buying a ticket for a sleeper bus as opposed to a regular deluxe bus because you will have more space, should be more comfortable, and you’re more likely to get some sleep.

Sleeper buses are different to regular deluxe buses because they have an upper and a lower bank of ‘beds’, similar to bunk beds, often three across. So, there will be two narrow aisles between the three rows. While they are not completely lie-flat beds, the backs are reclined at a fixed angle and there’s enough space to stretch your legs out flat, unless you’re especially tall. Travelers have remarked that the sleeper buses are actually more comfortable than regular buses, particularly for taller people, because you do have that option to stretch your legs out; something you cannot do in a regular deluxe bus.

Traveling by Sleeper Bus in Vietnam is very affordable too. Prices are comparable to a second class seat on the train, but on the bus you’re essentially getting a bed for your money. Overall, comfort levels probably aren’t as high as a sleeper berth on a train, but then you’re saving a substantial amount of money compared to a train sleeper berth. You’re also saving money because you’re missing a night in a hotel by traveling overnight.

Sleeper bus in Vietnam interior

Tickets for the Sleeper buses, like the regular deluxe buses, can be bought online through 12Go where you can also see photos of a typical interior, giving you a better idea of what you’re paying for. Of course, you can get these tickets from the bus companies or from the bus terminals as well.

Vietnam Open Bus

Another option for traveling long distances by bus in Vietnam is what’s called an Open Tour Bus. Don’t let the name confuse you – it’s not an open-top tour bus like you get in cities for sightseeing, and it’s not exactly a standard tour bus in that you won’t be getting a running commentary about the places you’re passing! The ‘open’ part of the name basically means you get an open ticket and you have the option to get on or of the bus at numerous points along the route.

These are particularly popular with backpackers because they’re relatively comfortable air conditioned buses that are reasonably priced, and, good because of the flexibility they offer in terms of being able to stop at numerous big cities along the way. Although they can be good value for money, you do need to be careful when booking these tickets because the more times you get on and off the bus, the more expensive it will make the ticket. In terms of flexibility though, they’re great. You can stop off in a city and decide how long you want to spend there. It could just be a few hours, to several days or even a week or more, but it’s advisable to try to book the next leg of your trip on the Open Ticket bus at least a day in advance to be sure you get a space.

Inside an Open Bus

With lots of stops the Open Bus may not end up being the most economical way to travel, but as we said above, it’s great for flexibility and also gives you the option to change your plans along the way.

As these are a little different to the local buses and interprovincial buses, you don’t have as many options for buying tickets. The main route is from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi, so check budget cafes in these two cities for tickets, or visit one of the bus company websites or offices. The Sinh Tourist is a good option, for example.

So, in terms of speed, taking a bus in Vietnam won’t necessarily get you to your destination any faster than a train will, but you can be almost certain that it will cost you less than the train. Sleeper buses can be a good and comfortable alternative to train sleeper berths, while the Open Bus in Vietnam offers great flexibility to those travelers who aren’t certain where they want to go and how long they want to go for.
