What Is The Legends Tour?

Formerly known as the European Seniors Tour and the Staysure Tour, the Legends Tour is the men’s professional golf tour for members aged 50 and older. Five years after the first edition of The Senior Open, won by Neil Coles in 1987, more than 60 professionals called for a formally structured Tour, which was then created in 1992.

The Legends Tour features a strong playing membership that includes former Major winners, world number ones and Ryder Cup players and captains. Players compete for the John Jacobs Trophy, which is awarded to the golfer who finishes first on the Legends Tour Order of Merit each season.

You can get up close and personal with Legends at world-class destinations across Europe, the United States and Africa by getting your Legends Tour 2022 tickets .

Past winners (full list below) include Scotland legends Colin Montgomerie and Sam Torrance, as well as former Masters champion and world number one, Ian Woosnam.

A host of other big names and former DP World Tour champions compete on the Legends Tour, including Thomas Bjørn, Paul McGinley, Paul Lawrie, Michael Campbell, and America’s Tom Lehman.

Who Owns The Legends Tour?

In 2020, the Staysure Tour was rebranded the Legends Tour under a new ownership structure. This was part of a ground-breaking agreement between the European Tour and Staysure founder and group CEO Ryan Howsam.

Under the agreement, Howsam, who founded insurance firm Staysure in 2004, took a majority equity share in the Legends Tour. Howsam, a golf fanatic, also owns and invests in companies in sport, insurance, tech, food and media.

What Is The Alliance Series?

A number of Legends Tour events (see below) will take place in ‘Alliance’ format, which offers amateur golfers (max handicap 18 for men and 24 for women) the opportunity to compete alongside the Legends of the game and live the life of a pro – on and off the golf course.

There are six confirmed Alliance Series events in 2022. At these tournaments, amateur golfers get to play a minimum of two competitive rounds during the Championship, alongside different pros in front of crowds and the television cameras.

It costs between £8,000 and £12,000 to enter a tournament. As well as the playing experience, the package offers inside-the-ropes access at the tournament, hospitality, and use of the players lounge.

What Is The Celebrity Series?

The Celebrity Series provides another unique playing experience, where amateur golfers get to play with personalities from sport, business and media the day before the tournament gets underway. A Celebrity Series team consists of two amateurs, one Legend and one celebrity. The cost is £2,500 per person or £5,000 per team of two amateurs.

It’s a package that comes with all the trimmings, including inside-the-ropes access at the tournament, use of the players lounge and locker room, and post-round hospitality with the Legends.

The Celebrity Series attracts a number of familiar faces from the world of sport and media

What Is The Championship Pro-Am?

There’s a third opportunity for amateur golfers to experience the life of a pro golfer within the Legends Tour set-up  – the Championship Pro-Am. This takes place ahead of the competitive tournament days, and costs £3,500 per team (three amateurs and one professional). Individual places can be purchased for £1,000.

Legends Tour Schedule 2022

The Legends Tour has returned stronger and boasts an international schedule with tournaments taking place across a variety of different countries and continents. The Tour will come to a conclusion in the exotic climes of the Indian Ocean, with the ‘Indian Ocean Swing’. Firstly, The MCB Tour Championship Seychelles will be played at Constance Lemuria, Praslin, Seychelles, on December 2-4, 2022, while the MCB Tour Championship Mauritius will return to the Legends Course at Constance Belle Mare Plage, Poste de Flacq, Mauritius, the following week where players will compete for a minimum prize fund of €500,000.

A number of other events and venues complement a growing roster of top top-class tournaments on the Legends Tour in 2022, and there’s a lot of golf to be played before the Order of Merit winner gets crowned in Mauritius. And along the way, the players will be competing for record prize funds totalling over €15 million.

Legends Tour: Biggest schedule and record prizepool

The Legends Tour has unveiled plans for a record-breaking 2024 season, headlined by its busiest schedule to date and a €18 million prize pool.

Running from April to December, this year’s globetrotting schedule will feature 20 events – featuring new tournaments set to debut in Barbados, Kenya, Mexico, Spain, the UK and Zambia, with even more additions still to be announced. They join Legends Tour staples such as the flagship Staysure PGA Seniors Championship – which will return to Trump International Golf Links in Aberdeen following the success of last year’s event – and the Irish Legends at Seapoint Golf Links.

Many of the Legends Tour’s brightest stars will be eyeing up Major victory in 2024 at the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship at Harbor Shores Golf Club, the US Senior Open at Newport Country Club and The Senior Open presented by Rolex at Carnoustie Golf Links. The season will culminate with the MCB Tour Championship Mauritius at Constance Belle Mare Plage, where qualifying players will contest for the John Jacobs Trophy, which was won in 2023 by former Ryder Cup player Peter Baker.

Largest prize pool in Legends Tour history

As well as the tournament silverware, some of golf’s biggest names will also be competing for the largest prize pool in Legends Tour history. The €18 million (more than €8.6 million of which will be assigned outside of the Majors of senior men’s golf – the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship, the US Senior Open and The Senior Open presented by Rolex) represents a 100 per cent increase since the tour returned to a full schedule in 2022 following the Covid pandemic, with $2 million to play for in the final two events on the Road to Mauritius and a bonus pool of $100,000 for the top five players in the final standings.

Complementing the drama of the professional events will be the unique Celebrity Pro-Am, which sees stars from the world of sport and entertainment competing to raise money and awareness for their chosen charities. Meanwhile, passionate amateurs can tee off alongside their heroes in the Legends Experience, the tour’s one-of-a-kind pro-am experience.

Legends Tour on the rise

The announcement suggests the global growth of the Legends Tour – which hit new heights in 2023 – is set to continue. At the end of the season, the brand announced record figures for amateur participation, spectators and social media engagement, with the latter taking total reach across all channels to over 100 million people for the first time. In November, the inaugural Vinpearl DIC Legends Vietnam – the competition’s first foray into Vietnam – embodied the expansion into new markets, including Asia, Africa, the Caribbean and Central America, that has characterized the Legends Tour’s first three years.

Phil Harrison, CEO of the Legends Tour, said: “We have been working hard behind the scenes, and 2024 promises to be another incredible year for the Legends Tour. “Securing new events in some truly spectacular venues around the world is always a key objective of ours, and we are thrilled with the additions to the schedule for this season, as well as the prestigious venues we are honored to return to. “Everything – from the standard of competition to the number of amateurs getting involved – has been growing year on year, and this year will be no exception. We cannot wait to see it all unfold.”

2023 LEGENDS TOUR: BIGGER PRIZE FUNDS WITH NEW VENUES IN SCOTLAND AND IRELAND

  • Golfing World

what is the legends golf tour

The Legends Tour will continue to build on its star quality with a global 2023 schedule which features exciting debuts for two stunning links venues, in Scotland and in Ireland, and increased prize funds across the board for many of the game’s most decorated players.

The 2023 season will feature at least 18 tournaments with a record-breaking prize fund – with final numbers set to be released shortly – which will be a significant increase on the 2022 campaign.

Among the exciting developments for 2023 is the news that the spectacular Trump International Golf Links Aberdeen will host the Tour for the first time when the Staysure PGA Seniors Championship is played from August 24-27.

The Scottish venue is joined on the schedule by another breath-taking links newcomer, with Seapoint Golf Links – a rising star in the ranks of Irish links courses and located on the East coast, just an hour north of Dublin – set to host a major international professional event for the first time from June 23-25 when the Irish Legends comes to town.

The JCB Championship will return from August 3-5 after a glorious debut in 2022, when a host of superstars including Ernie Els, Retief Goosen, Darren Clarke and Paul Lawrie descended upon the spectacular Uttoxeter venue, with Germany’s Alex Cejka finishing two shots clear of Ireland’s Paul McGinley to lift the title.

Among the other returning highlights on the new-look schedule are July’s Swiss Seniors Open at Golf Club Bad Ragaz, the WINSTONgolf Senior Open in Germany in September, the Italian Senior Open in October and November’s Farmfoods European Senior Masters in Spain.

A new English event, the Legends Players Championship, will be held for the first time in 2023, joining the JCB Championship and the Jersey Legends in a triumvirate of confirmed England-based tournaments.

Major glory may be on the cards for the biggest stars of the Legends Tour, with the Senior Open Championship Presented by Rolex visiting Royal Porthcawl Golf Club in 2023, while the KitchenAid US PGA Senior Championship will be played at PGA Frisco, Texas and the US Senior Open will take place at Wisconsin’s SentryWorld Golf Course.

The Tour will once again close with the MCB Tour Championship Mauritius, which has provided a fitting finale to the popular competition for more than a decade. At the 2022 edition of the event, staged in December, South African James Kingston lifted the John Jacobs Trophy as the Order of Merit leader despite an impressive display by tournament winner Thomas Bjørn.

Many golfers hoping to make their mark on the Legends Tour in 2023 will have to first prove themselves at the Tour’s Qualifying School this month, which returns for the first time in three years. The venue for the high-stakes event will be Gloria Golf Resort in Belek, Turkey, where players will battle it out to earn one of five spots on the Tour.

Phil Harrison, Legends Tour CEO, said: “Since rebranding as the Legends Tour in 2020, our central ambition has been to keep growing, and this 2023 schedule is another incredibly exciting step forward in the evolution of our Tour.

“We have some stunning new venues to add to the long list of world-class golf courses which we visit on an annual basis. We are thrilled that, for the first time, our players will compete on two spectacular links venues in Trump International and Seapoint, while the addition of the English Masters means another big event for the famously passionate British golf fans.

“We extend our thanks to all of our host venues, sponsors and partners for being part of this journey and we look forward to welcoming them back in 2023 for what is set to be an exhilarating season for our players, our celebrities and our fans.”

The Legends Tour is the brainchild of entrepreneur Ryan Howsam, who bought a majority stake in the then-named European Senior Tour and set about rebranding the Tour in 2020. A prestigious competition featuring some of golf’s finest players aged 50 and over, the reimagined Legends Tour became a fan favourite and promises to be better than ever in 2023.

Aussies on Tour: Lee's defence with a difference

by Tony Webeck

Minjee Lee AIG Women's Open

The trophy is the same but the venue is very different as Minjee Lee eyes off a title defence with a difference at this week’s Kroger Queen City Championship in Ohio.

Twelve months ago, Lee’s playoff victory over Charley Hull at Kenwood Country Club sparked a run of form that saw her climb back to No.4 in the Rolex Women’s World Golf Ranking.

Lee had two wins, two runner-up finishes and two further top 10s in the space of seven starts but the memories of the performance that started her run are muted somewhat by a change of venue.

“I was actually talking about it with my physio yesterday; it kind of doesn’t feel like I’m defending,” said Lee, who enters the week ranked No.16 in the world.

“Obviously I won the tournament last year, but because we’re at a new venue it feels like I’m learning everything new and getting to know a new place.

“It’s not the same as when you’ve been to the tournament and you feel the vibes from the course that you kind of remember from the previous year.

“I’m really looking forward to a different challenge this year.”

After a busy period that included the Amundi Evian Championship, Paris Olympics, Women’s Scottish Open and AIG Women’s Open, the 28-year-old arrives refreshed and hopeful of another strong finish to the year.

“I had a nice break after our last Europe swing,” said the two-time major champion.

“I feel like after all the wind at the Scottish and AIG I was a little worn out.

“Just needed a couple weeks to refresh and do a little bit of practice and sharpen a few things in my game.”

Lee is not the only Australian with a title on the line this week.

Queenslander Scott Hend returns to WINSTONgolf in Germany as the defending champion of the WINSTONgolf Senior Open on the Legends Tour looking to make it an Aussie trifecta after Richard Green’s triumph in 2022.

It shapes as a potentially career-defining week for young Aussies Karl Vilips and Cassie Porter.

Vilips has qualified for the penultimate event of the Korn Ferry Tour Finals ranked 18th on the Points List, the top 30 after the Korn Ferry Tour Championship to earn promotion to the PGA TOUR in 2025.

Porter is also one good result from a step up in class to the LPGA Tour in 2025.

Currently 10th on the Epson Tour with two events left in the season, Porter will earn status on the LPGA Tour if she can finish inside the top 15 at the completion of the Epson Tour Championship.

TGL, explained: 8 questions you probably still have about golf's new simulator league

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2024/9/tgl-explained-lead-image.png

Part simulator, part real golf. On ESPN in primetime. A collapsed stadium. Rory and Keegan leading the Boston team. Hundreds of millions of dollars in investment from A-listers like Stephen Curry, Serena Williams and Justin Timberlake.

You may have heard brief rumblings and team announcements, but chances are your understanding of TGL—the primetime golf league scheduled to debut on Jan. 7, 2025—is a little a fuzzy.

The nascent golf league is the creation of TMRW Sports, the venture led by Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and sports exec Mike McCarley, in partnership with the PGA Tour in what is widely understood as a counter to the Saudi-backed LIV Golf’s team-golf-in-a-fun-atmosphere appeal.

The stakes are high. If it works, TGL is positioned to capitalize on golf’s growing popularity with casual sports fans and usurp LIV’s claim to captivating team golf. If it fails, millions in investment will be wasted, and perhaps worse, professional golf’s identity crisis in the wake of its schism may further alienate fans who simply want the old status quo of the best players competing over 72 holes on a real course on a consistent basis.

Now less than four months from the start of the new league, we’re getting new details on the format, tech-infused stadium and the bold digital-first hole designs created by world-class architects. You’ve got lots of questions, we’ve got some answers. Here’s what we know.

Wait a minute, wasn’t this league supposed to start last year?

Yep, TGL was originally slated for a January 2024 launch until last November, when the stadium’s roof collapsed. In retrospect, it was fortuitous timing, as the extra year allowed organizers the time to redesign a new, sturdier stadium in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., and further refine the league’s launch.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2024/9/tgl-teebox-rory-rendering.png

OK, so when is it, who’s playing and for how much money?

The first match will be played on Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2025 and will be aired live in primetime on ESPN and ESPN+. The second match will be played a week later on Jan. 14, followed by the third match on Tuesday, Jan. 21, both of which will be aired on ESPN. The full schedule for the rest of the season will be announced soon.

The league consists of six teams of four PGA Tour players. The players combine for over 200 PGA Tour wins and over 30 major championship victories. Prior to the original planned launch earlier this year, McCarley (the league's co-founder) said the total purse would be $21 million , with $9 million going to the season's winning team.

Atlanta Drive Golf Club: Lucas Glover, Patrick Cantlay, Justin Thomas, Billy Horschel Boston Common Golf: Keegan Bradley, Rory McIlroy, Hideki Matsuyama, Adam Scott Jupiter Links Golf Club: Tom Kim, Tiger Woods, Max Homa, Kevin Kisner Los Angeles Golf Club: Sahith Theegala, Tommy Fleetwood, Collin Morikawa, Justin Rose New York Golf Club: Matt Fitzpatrick, Rickie Fowler, Xander Schauffele, Cameron Young The Bay Golf Club: Min Woo Lee, Wyndham Clark, Ludvig Aberg, Shane Lowry

What about all of those big-name investors?

Like other sports leagues, TGL teams have private ownership, including from some of the most prominent names in major league sports. Similar to LIV Golf's team franchising model, TGL teams will have stakes in the league's overall success.

Atlanta Drive Golf Club : Prominent investors include Arthur M. Blank of AMB Sports and Entertainment, which has ownership in the Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta United.

Boston Common Golf : Investors include John Henry, Tom Werner, Mike Gordon, and Fenway Sports Group, who own the Boston Red Sox, Liverpool FC, Pittsburgh Penguins and RFK Racing.

Jupiter Links Golf Club: Tiger Woods’ TGR Ventures and David Blitzer, who has ownership in the Philadelphia 76ers, New Jersey Devils, Cleveland Guardians, Washington Commanders, Crystal Palace FC, Real Salt Lake, Utah Royals and Joe Gibbs Racing.

Los Angeles Golf Club : Investors include Alexis Ohanian (Angel City FC), Serena Williams, and Venus Williams—as well as smaller stakes held by the Antetokounmpo brothers, Alex Morgan, Servando Carrasco, and Michelle Wie West.

New York Golf Club : Investors include Steven A. Cohen, whose Cohen Private Ventures has ownership stake in the New York Mets.

The Bay Golf Club : Owned by a group led by Avenue Sports Fund with Stephen Curry and Marc Lasry, as well as Andre Iguodala and Klay Thompson.

How does the format work?

Teams will play head-to-head in a 15-hole match. The match will be divided into two sessions. Session 1, on holes 1-9, will be “triples” in which three players on a team play alternate shot. Session 2, on holes 10-15, will be “singles” in which players will compete one-on-one.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2024/9/tgl-match-infographic.jpg

A team will earn one point for winning a hole and if teams tie, no points will be given. There are no carryovers. The team with the most points at the end of 15 holes will be the winner. In the case of a tie, the match will be decided in overtime in a 3-vs.-3 closest-to-the-hole competition.

There is a clever twist with the “hammer,” common among weekend money games . In TGL, if a team wants to raise the stakes on a hole, they can “throw” the hammer. If the other team accepts, it raises the stakes of the hole by one point. If the opposing team declines the hammer, they concede the hole. The hammer rotates from team to team, allowing for quick comebacks.

There will also be a 40-second shot clock, limited timeouts available and referees on the field, all making TGL feel fast-paced and closer to a typical stadium sport.

There will be a season-long competition among the six teams. Similar to the NHL points structure, teams will earn two points for a match win, one point for a loss in overtime and no points for a loss in regulation. The top four teams in the season standings will advance to the postseason, which will include single-elimination semifinals and a best-of-three championship.

I’ve heard there’s a lot of tech involved. Is this simulator golf or real golf?

Yes, yes and yes. TGL is a sort of tech-infused hybrid of simulator and real-world golf. The matches will be played in the 250,000 square-foot SoFi Center, which will seat 1,500 fans and house a massive simulator screen that is 53 feet tall and 64 feet wide, nearly 24 times larger than a standard simulator.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2024/9/tgl-simulator-rendering.jpg

The entire field of play is 97 yards long, 50 yards wide and includes two real-grass tee boxes and a Greenzone the size of four basketball courts.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2024/9/tgl-field-of-play-rendering.jpg

To start a hole, players will hit into the screen from the tee box 35 yards away. Teams will continue to hit into the screen until their ball finishes inside the boundary of the Greenzone, after which players will turn around and being playing on the real grass putting surface and green surrounds. The tee boxes include fairway-cut grass, rough and real sand for bunker shots. Around the green players will be able to hit real chips and pitches as well as bunker shots from three bunkers.

So is every hole going to have the same green?

No, and this is where TGL hopes to really distances itself from any other simulator-only game. The golf simulator company Full Swing created a green with 600 actuators which can change undulations in just five seconds, allowing the surface to play quite different from hole to hole. What’s more, the entire green and bunker platform rotates 360 degrees, allowing for approaches to come into the green at different angles on different holes. As a result, each hole will be unique just as it would be in real golf.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2024/9/tgl-greenzone.jpg

What about those holes, are they going to be playing existing holes or new ones?

TGL will consist of a collection of about 30 original holes designed specifically for the league by three top architects—Tiger Woods’ longtime design partner Beau Welling, the Nicklaus Design firm and one of Latin America’s top architects Augustín Pizá.

Pizá has worked on over 70 course projects across three continents—many of which in Latin America—and has collaborated with Jack Nicklaus, Tom Fazio, Robert von Hagge, Gary Player and others. Being able to design holes with no environmental or monetary restraints was liberating, says Pizá, but it also created new challenges.

“It is a blank canvas. We can do whatever we want,” says Pizá, who earned his master’s degree in golf course architecture from the University of Edinburgh. “Now that is also the challenge because when you have this liberty, you have to design something exciting, something different, something challenging, something beautiful, but also respecting the integrity of the game.”

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2024/9/serpent-tgl-hole-sketch.png

After agreeing to create a batch of holes for TGL, Pizá first started with pencil and paper, as he would for any green-grass course. Next, instead of worrying about where irrigation would go and what the terrain dictates, Pizá had to create the terrain himself. Each TGL plays in a unique landscape, from oceanside to desert to mountains.

“My thought process was to create something that you could still do in real life, but we can't really do it because of constraints like budget or environmental or timing,” Pizá says. “But there would be a world that you can do it.”

After creating detailed sketches, Pizá worked closely with digital shapers at Full Swing to bring his vision to simulator reality.

Do we know what any of the holes are going to look like?

Yes, TGL has begun to release the holes that players will compete on, including two from Pizá’s batch. One of these, called “Serpent,” is a 603-yard par 5 that Pizá wants to play between a 4.7 and 4.9 average for the pros, so he made it reachable, but not without risk.

“It's designed for a high trajectory fade off the tee if you're taking the regular position,” he says. For players who can carry it around 305-310 yards, they can catch a speed slot that bisects the fairway.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2024/9/serpent-tee-piza-tgl.png

“It's called Serpent because it's zigzagging through the terrain,” says Pizá, who is known for his creative and often bold approach to architecture. “From the tee box, if you go left, that's the more conservative shot, but if you hit a very nice high trajectory or mid trajectory left to right shot, you can grab that speed slope and it will take you onto position A, which would be the right side of that zigzag.”

Diagonal lines are present throughout Serpent, which Pizá loves to incorporate in his designs because he says they are visually dynamic and encourage movement in the terrain. For players who play safe up the left side of the hole, they will have the higher terrain and a clearer view of the green but will be unlikely to be able to reach it. Those who play aggressively down the right can reach in two but might have a blind approach.

Another of Pizá’s holes that will force the best players to think strategically on the tee is the short par-4 called “Plank.” Playing between 350-380 yards, the hole is reachable for the longest hitters, but a narrowing landing strip requires more accuracy the farther you push the ball up.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2024/9/plank-tgl-hole-augie-piza.png

The design, Pizá says, is the recreation of one of his favorite existing holes that he has designed—No. 17 at Tampico Country Club in Mexico. The hole plays sharply uphill the entire way with ocean on both sides.

“When you are standing on that tee box, this hole plays with your psyche because with that four percent uphill lie, you will always see a line of bunkers in your way,” he says.

Three strips of bunkers jut into the landing area, forcing players to get specific with their layup. Should they choose a more aggressive route, the farthest three bunkers are deep pots that make it difficult to reach the green from. It’s these shot options that Pizá strived for and thinks will add an exciting twist that the TGL format encourages.

“In our design philosophy, we love the top player to analyze and then play, and the high handicapper to play and then analyze,” he says.

Legends Tour hits new landmark with biggest schedule and record €18million prizepool

The legends tour has unveiled plans for a record-breaking 2024 season, headlined by its busiest schedule to date – including nine new events – and an eye-watering €18million prize pool..

As well as the tournament silverware, some of golf’s biggest names will also be competing for the largest prize pool in Legends Tour history. The €18million (more than €8.6million of which will be assigned outside of the Majors of senior men’s golf – the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship, the US Senior Open and The Senior Open presented by Rolex) represents a 100 per cent increase since the tour returned to a full schedule in 2022 following the covid pandemic, with $2million to play for in the final two events on the Road to Mauritius and a bonus pool of $100,000 for the top five players in the final standings.

The announcement suggests the global growth of the Legends Tour – which hit new heights in 2023 – is set to continue. At the end of the season, the brand announced record figures for amateur participation, spectators and social media engagement, with the latter taking total reach across all channels to over 100million people for the first time.

In November, the inaugural Vinpearl DIC Legends Vietnam – the competition’s first foray into Vietnam – embodied the expansion into new markets, including Asia, Africa, the Caribbean and Central America, that has characterised the Legends Tour’s first three years.

Phil Harrison, CEO of the Legends Tour, said: “We have been working hard behind the scenes, and 2024 promises to be another incredible year for the Legends Tour.

“Securing new events in some truly spectacular venues around the world is always a key objective of ours, and we are thrilled with the additions to the schedule for this season, as well as the prestigious venues we are honoured to return to.

“Everything – from the standard of competition to the number of amateurs getting involved – has been growing year on year, and this year will be no exception. We cannot wait to see it all unfold.”

It’s no secret that many professional athletes turn to golf to fuel their competitive fire after their playing careers come to an end.

Any golf fan who’s watched the American Century Celebrity Golf Championship on the shores of Lake Tahoe or various pro-am tournaments has likely debated which of the big four U.S. sport leagues has the best golfers.

Is it Major League Baseball, where starting pitchers are known for honing their skills on the links between starts? Is it the NFL, where placekickers have been known to carry over their accuracy to the fairways and greens? Maybe it’s the NHL, where the physics of the hockey slapshot seem to carry over well to the golf swing. Or is it the NBA, where height and a deft touch help with both power off the tee and a silky putting stroke?

A new competitive golf tournament series – The Pro Rivals Open, or more simply, THE PRO — is seeking to answer that question by bringing together current and former players from the four leagues, with events designed specifically for athletes and sports legends seeking the experience of a professionally-run golf event.

The new league kicks off in less than three months, with the inaugural PRO CUP at Innisbrook Resort in Palm Harbor, Florida, scheduled for Dec. 9-14.

The league’s respective teams will be led by baseball Hall-of-Famer John Smoltz (MLB), Super Bowl champion Jerome Bettis (NFL), hockey Hall-of-Famer Mike Modano (NHL), and 14-year NBA guard and current ESPN Radio lead analyst Jon Barry (NBA). The full rosters for the first event, which includes 12-player teams, will be announced this fall.

The series starts with the Ryder Cup-style match play competition between teams from the four leagues and then will feature four sport-specific golf tournaments spanning the next year to crown the best player from each of the sports. Those three-day stroke-play events are expected to have 54-player fields and will be scheduled to conflict as little as possible with the seasons for the various professional leagues.

“Golf is a great sport, but it's an individual sport,” Smoltz said in an interview. “Whenever you can get together and have a team competition, much like the Ryder Cup, President's Cup and some of the other things, it's what everybody in the four sports that are getting together has been part of. It’s really going to be a great, great tour, and I’m so glad to be a part of it.”

Sites for the other four tournaments that follow the PRO CUP will be announced later, with the events scheduled to run between March and December 2025.

THE PRO was created by Pure Sports Holdings and is managed by ETZEL, an experiential events and marketing agency.

Traditional tournament weeks will include two early week practice rounds, a midweek Pro-Am, and then three days of competition.

The PRO CUP at Innisbrook, which regularly hosts the PGA Tour’s Valspar Championship on its Copperhead Course, will have a tournament Pro-Am that pairs four amateur players with one professional athlete. Competition rounds will be open to the public, with daily and weekly tickets available for purchase.

The purse for THE PRO CUP is $372,000, with prize money distributed based on team performance. Purses for sport-specific tournaments in 2025 will be in a similar range. In addition, proceeds from tournament revenue will go to tournament charity partners within each community.

“Each sport will have its own tournament in its offseason,” the 57-year-old Smoltz said. “We're kicking it off as the Ryder Cup (type event). And then each year we'll end with a Ryder Cup. We're introducing the tour this way because it gives it the best showcase for what's to come.”

Highlights from the various events will be shared on the fledgling league’s website and social media channels. THE PRO is also in discussions with potential media partners to identify a broadcast partner for its tournaments.

“So much of celebrity golf in the past has tried to replicate, or be on par with, PGA (Tour) golfers. That's never going to be the case,” added Smoltz. “But what you're going to see is really good competition and the bantering and the opportunities to see this thing grow. I've probably secured about six to eight guys already in building my team and just getting the news and the awareness out. People are excited when they hear about the format and what the concept is going to be. There won't be many turning it down unless their calendar just won't allow it.”

Smoltz is no stranger to competitive golf. He’s been a regular on the celebrity pro-am circuit in recent years and competed in several PGA Tour Champions events as well as the 2018 U.S. Senior Open and at Q-School seeking to qualify for the senior tour.

“As a captain, I am probably challenged about as much as anybody in putting together the (MLB) team,” Smoltz said, noting that the individual sport tournaments will eventually lead to guaranteed spots for THE PRO CUP and its Ryder Cup-style team competition. There will also be captain’s choices for that roster. “This has so much dynamics to it, and you know it will keep getting better and better every year.”

With golf’s growing popularity, not to mention the unrest in men’s professional golf and the divide between the two tours that has jaded some golf fans, Smoltz sees a major opportunity for a new offering like THE PRO. This is especially true when it involves names that many sports fans already have connections with. Not that the pro athlete-driven league would be a competitor for the professional golf tours, but non-traditional events like The Match have drawn significant attention.

“Golf has been a conduit for a lot of things — raising money for charities and getting celebrities together for a great cause — and there's going to be component of that in this as well,” Smoltz said. “But I think what it also does is give an opportunity for people to mingle and spend time with a Hall of Famer or some of the sports figures that we will have in this tournament.”

So, which sport will walk away with bragging rights in December?

“Our (MLB) roster probably has the most depth, but with hockey you can probably make that claim as well,” Smoltz said. “But people are going to be surprised. In match play, the separation is not going to be as great as it would be if we were all playing stroke play. Then that depth would probably come out in the baseball side. But what I'm looking forward to as this rolls out in the years to come is going to be the guys that put the work in to get better. And they’re going to want to make this ‘Ryder Cup team’ no different than professional golf.”

What is TGL? Follow along Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy's new golf league journey

In August of 2022, a new vision for golf was born.

Backed by TMRW Sports, golf legends Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy headed the creation of Tomorrow's Golf League, an interactive league that fuses the traditional sport and advanced technology in an indoor arena.

The Palm Beach Gardens-based league was originally set to launch in January of this year but was pushed back due to arena damages caused by a windstorm and power outage back in November.

Now, the league's first match is just around the corner, set to begin Jan. 7, 2025. Follow along Woods and McIlroy's journey to tee time.
