24. Dona Paula

Located around 7kms from Panjim, Dona Paula is one of the most popular tourist hangouts in Goa famous for its vast stretch of beach. The small beach is also popular as the Lover's Paradise and features a jetty (Dona Paula Jetty) adjacent to it, which provides an ethereal view of the Arabian Sea and Mormugao harbour. Another attraction here is the whitewashed statue, called 'Image of India', depicting Mother India and Young India.

25. Arvalem Waterfalls

One of the most beautiful spots to visit in North Goa, Arvalem Waterfalls is located in Sanquelim, about 30km away from from the Panjim Kadamba bus stand. Also known as Harvalem Falls, it forms a huge pool of water at its base - almost as big as a lake. This makes Arvalem Falls a popular tourist and picnic spot. The fall is best visited during the monsoon as after that, it reduces to just a trickle.

26. Mangeshi Temple

Mangeshi Temple or Shri Mangueshi Temple is Lord Shiva temple located in the Mangeshi village in Ponda region of Goa. The largest and most visited temple in Goa, it is built in the honour of Bhagwan Manguesh, the Kuldevata of Gaud Saraswat Brahmins. The deity is believed to be an incarnation of Lord Shiva, whose name was derived from "Mam Girisha" the words used by Goddess Parvati when Lord Shiva made a successful attempt to scare her by taking the form of a Tiger.

27. Kalacha Beach

Kalacha Beach, also known as Paliem Beach, is one of the unexploited beaches of Goa. Known for its sweet water lagoon, Kalacha Beach is located towards the south of Sinquerim Beach which can be accessed from Arambol Beach on foot. 28. Royal Chapel of St Anthony

Chapel of St. Anthony, built in the 17th century by the Portuguese, is dedicated to the patron saint of the Portuguese Navy and the Army, St. Anthony. The attraction is located very close to the Monastery of St. Augustine in Goa. The chapel has a unique architecture with a semi-circular arch and a fort like influence. Devotees flock in large numbers on every 13th of June to celebrate the Saint's Feast Day.

29. Little Vagator Beach

Ozran Beach, famous for its natural landscape and the Fort of Chapora, is a rocky beach and requires climbing a little hillock to reach the shoreline. The view of the horizon from the top of the hillock is quite a sight. Not frequently crowded, the location is often chosen for shooting movies and is a paradise for stargazers. The beach is also called Little Vagator as it is located a little distance away from the Vagator Beach.

30. Church Of Nossa Senhora De Penha De Franca

Church Of Nossa Senhora De Penha De Franca is a grand 16th-century church located on the banks of the confluence of River Mapusa and River Mandovi in Goa. A monument of national heritage, it is also famous for its picturesque location looking across Charao Island on one side and Ribandar Causeway on the other. The interior of the church is stunning with a high-vaulted ceiling and handpainted sceneries.

31. Mae De Deus Church

33. Corjuem Fort

35. Shri Shantadurga Temple

In this post you will learn all about the best places to visit in North Goa in one day along with a few itineraries to suit your travel type.

On most of my trips to Goa, when I stay in South Goa, I plan a quick one day trip to North Goa. So given that I have done this a few times, I can help you plan your one day in North Goa in a way you like. Whether you’re on a quick weekend trip, have a short layover, travelling on a short work trip or visiting Goa for a day from nearby regions like Konkan or Karnataka – if you have just one day for North Goa – you don’t have to worry. The best way to spend just 1 day in North Goa is by visiting the key monuments in Old Goa, followed by the famous forts of Goa and then finishing off with time on a beach in North Goa.

Is 1 day in North Goa enough?

One day in North Goa is enough for visiting key tourist attractions, forts and the main beaches. But the trip would feel a bit rushed. If you want a more slow-paced trip to North Goa, plan to spend at least 2 days in North Goa.

How to spend one day in North Goa?

To get the most out of one day in North Goa, visit the primary tourist attractions mostly located in Old Goa, Panjim in the morning and in the afternoon visit Fort Aguada or Fort Chapora and spend the evening on a beach of your choice. You can plan a one-day visit to North Goa either through a tour operator or on your own.

Is it possible to visit North Goa on a day trip from South Goa?

Many tour operators in South Goa offer day trips to North Goa which include a visit to the Old Goan churches and forts, a few famous North Goan beaches and at times a 45 minute cruise in the Mandovi river. The entire tour takes up at least 8 hours and proves to be a bit hectic.

A better way of spending a day in North Goa is by visiting fewer tourist attractions and spending more time at the beach absorbing the vibe of the place which is so different from South Goa.

How to spend one day in North Goa

Option 1: organized tour.

Heading out on an organized tour is the most common way of spending one day in North Goa. An organized tour is a fair choice if you’re staying in South Goa and don’t want to bother creating an itinerary that works i.e. one taking into consideration the distance between places, opening and closing hours etc.

The best way to book an organized tour is by getting in touch with a nearby vendor. Most local operators provide a car and a driver cum guide. For larger groups, they may even provide a slight concession and book a small bus for you.

A typical North Goa tour itinerary includes the following

• Fort Aguada
• Chapora Fort
• Vagator Beach
• A few less famous temples and churches and
• a tourist attraction like Snow Park

The other alternative is to book an organized tour online. The benefit of doing this is that you pay per person and it proves to be a bit cheaper for solo/couple travellers.

Choice 1 – Organized tour to North Goa (History, architrecture and beaches – Famous and less famous tourist spots)

• This trip includes a visit to the Immaculate Conception Church, St. Sebastian Church, the colourful Fountainhas quarter followed by a visit to the stunning Aguada fort and a beach in North Goa.
• But over and above these standard attractions, the tour also lets you visit a few offbeat places like the Kala Academy, the Houses of Goa museum and the local’s favourite- Miramar Beach.

It is a great choice for those that want to dive deeper into the history of Goa and get a feel of how Goa stands today.

Choice 2 – Organized tour to North Goa (Beaches & Forts only)

If you want to skip Old Goa altogether, try out this trip.

• It takes you through all the beaches between Candolim and Vagator.
• It also lets you spend enough time at Fort Aguada and Fort Chapora.

Basically, you cover the touristy part of North Goa in just one day!

Option 2: Self-organized North Goa tour

Now as you can see, there are restrictions in terms of the places you can see when you’re on an organized tour. I see no point in visiting all the beaches of North Goa when you just have one day. Likewise, visiting multiple museums and art centers when you’re short on time, is also not judicious.

So here’s a sample 1 day itinerary of North Goa.

You can use it to plan your own trip. To execute this itinerary, book a car or a two-wheeler for an entire day from a vendor close to your hotel.

Old Goa Churches (10 am to 12 noon)

Visit the churches in Old Goa. The primary ones to visit are Basilica of Bom Jesus, Se Cathedral and St. Francis Assisi church.

• I recommend you to visit the museum at St. Francis Assisi church if you’re short on time.
• Visit these places first thing in the morning to avoid crowds and queues.
• Observe the different styles of Portuguese architecture. The use of laterite stone at Basilica of Bom Jesus sets it apart from many other Portuguese churches across the world.

Panjim Church/Immaculate Conception Church (12 noon to 12:30 pm)

From here make a quick stop at the Our Lady of Immaculate Conception Church. It is one of the most architecturally beauiful churches in all of Goa. It is also a major filming location and you’d recognize it instantly if you’ve watched movies like Simmba, Josh, Kabhi Ha Kabhi Na, Aashiqui 2 etc.

Don’t spend too much time here. Click a picture from the divider across the street for a full view of the church.

Fountainhas (12:30 pm to 1:30 pm)

Walk through the lanes of Fountainhas

• Appreciate the use of colour
• Observe how the houses are still in use by locals
• Click pictures outside a building of your choice
• Check out St. Sebastian Church from outside

Have lunch at Ritz Classic (1:30 pm – 2:30 pm)

• The seafood thali is globally renowned. But they serve excellent vegetarian food too.

Visit Fort Aguada (2:30 pm to 4:00)

• Walk around the entire place
• Observe their water storage facilities
• Go and check out the lighthouse
• Click pictures of the surrounding coastal area from the top

Hang out at Baga Beach/Anjuna Beach (4:00 pm to 5:00 pm)

Spend time at a beach of your choice. Baga is more crowded. Anjuna is rocky.

• Try out watersports.
• Chill at a beachshack
• Or shop at streetside markets

Basically, take in the vibe of touristy Goa – a rare blend of buzzing yet laid-back.

Watch the sunset at Chapora Fort (5:00-sunset)

Head towards Chapora fort around 5. Besides its enormous historic significance, the fort is now renowned as the ‘Dil Chahta Hai’ fort. But it is also one of the best spots in North Goa to watch the sunset from. It also overlooks the gorgeous Vagator beach.

• Between November and February, the sun sets around 6:30 pm. So try to reach Chapora by 5:30 pm.
• Climb to the top and grab a spot on the fort wall by 6 pm to ensure you get the best sunset view.

Quick tips for your self-organized tour

• Booking a vehicle with a driver is recommended if you don’t want to worry about finding parking for your car. Finding a parking for your car is difficult in Old Goa and Fountainhas. But you can easily find parking if you’re travelling on a two-wheeler.
• If you’re staying in South Goa and plan to follow the above itinerary, leave early morning. (7:30 am from Palolem and 8:30 am from Benaulim). You will go back by 8:30-9:00 pm. So book your vehicle accordingly.

Option 3: Overnight stay in North Goa (recommended for party-lovers and couples)

If you can extend your stay in North Goa by a few hours to be able to spend one night, you’ll be able to do lots more than you can if you just spend your daytime in North Goa.

But before that make sure that you

• Visit North Goa during peak season . Many beach shacks and party places are shut in monsoons and summers and spending a night in North Goa would not really help you much if you visit Goa during offseason.
• Book your stay in Anjuna if you have just one night in Goa . ( See best-rated accommodation in Anjuna here )

Anjuna is quieter than Baga but full of incredible accommodation choices catering to all budgets.

The cafés, bars, and beach clubs are also very charming in terms of their ambiance, vibe, and decor.

Now that we know the prerequisites – here’s what you can do post sunset or instead of a sunset at Chapora

• Chill at a cafe in Anjuna. I love Purple Martini , Moon Star . Both offer exceptional sunset views.
• Head out on a sunset cruise over Mandovi river . See options here
• Plan a candle light dinner on a beach shack. (Vagator beach is ideal as it’s far less crowded) or a special one at Olive Bar & Kitchen
• Go partying at Curlies, Club Cubana, Titos, Hammerz, Hilltop or any other famous Goan nightclub
• Visit the Friday Night market at Vagator (if you’re in North Goa on Friday). There’s lots to shop and eat. The music played is also very vibey. It goes on until the wee hours of the night.

Option 4: 1 day in North Goa (nature-lovers/offbeat)

If you’re a nature lover and want to skip the touristy side of North Goa, here’s how you can put your day in North Goa to use.

Choose from one of the options below

• Go white water rafting in Mhaidei river inside the Mhaidei wildlife sanctuary (Plan around 5 hrs)
• Go an island trip to Divar island, Chorao Island or Sao Jacinto island. Enjoy a boat ride, go cycling or go on a bird trail at Dr. Salim Ali Sanctuary. See e-bike island tour details here.
• Hike in North Goa . Go up the Arambol Mountain for a difficult session or climb to the Bear’s Claw near Lower fort Aguada for a quick hike.

Where to stay in North Goa?

• If you have just one day in North Goa and you plan to stick to the touristy side, stay in Anjuna . There are lots of things to do in Anjuna and Vagator itself to keep you busy for a day.
• If you want to explore the offbeat places, stay in Candolim or Arambol (spl. for hiking and rafting).

Goa may be a tiny state but the best way to explore it is to pick a side – especially if you are short on time. Goa can mainly be divided into 2 parts. North Goa and South Goa. Bothe sides have sun, sand and the sea and both sides are just as gorgeous and is totally worth the Goa hype. But there is one major difference. South goa is for those who love a chilled out Goan vacation, it’s peaceful, with a relatively quiet party scene and very authentic and susegaad. If you want to know more about South Goa, then here’s A Detailed Itinerary To All The Places You Can Visit In South Goa . But North Goa is the fiesty, teenage cousin of South Goa. It’s young, hot-blooded and there’s lots to do, lots to see & lots to live it up.

About North Goa

North Goa is for everyone – but it specially caters to Indians from all over. It’s the perfect blend of home and Goan exquisiteness. It has partying, great food, beaches, sunshine, cheap booze, lots of pubs, and lots to do. North goa is meant for those who love a bit of thrill and are willing to brave crowds – because believe me you’ll find plenty of those here. It is also extremely well connected even in terms of local buses, so getting to and from most parts of North Goa is relatively easier. (Please note: this is considering Goan transportation system. The last bus shuts at 8pm, so if you are using local transport, please plan accordingly).

How To Reach North Goa?

By Flight: Getting to North Goa by flight is pretty easy. Goa has only one airport at Dabolim, which is somewhat right in the middle of the state. From Dabolim airport, you can hire a local taxi or book a taxi through Goa Miles (an app by the government that is cheaper than the airport taxis)

By Train: Thivim is the major junction for North Goa, where all upcountry trains normally make a halt

By Road: Depending on which part of India you are driving from, the directions will change. The route from Mumbai to North Goa is extremely beautiful and takes about 10 h 32 min  (578.8 km)  via AH47.

By Bus: There are a number of buses that ply from major metros in India to North Goa, with Panjim being a major halt point. You can choose a luxury AC bus or a simple, single tier bus – depending on your budget and preference.

Best Places To Visit In North Goa

North Goa has a variety of beaches, tourist spots and attractions to offer – from forts to great eateries, from perfect sunset points to milky white waterfalls. Whatever you want to do, well it can be done at North Goa. So let’s delve in and look at someof the best spots to visit in North Goa

1. Vagator Beach

This beach is the perfect blend of commercial and laidback. It’s got the right vibe, at the same time it’s a little secluded (by North Goa standards), it’s safe and has the most amazing sunsets. There are also multiple sunset points and shacks – lined along the beach as well as the cliff that leads to the beach. Both make fabulous brunch and sundowner spots. The roads in Vagator are tree lined (just like you see in the movies) and it’s glorious to just zoom around on your two wheeler. Here are some of the things you can do at Vagator Beach.

Accommodation:

Vagator has plenty of boutique hotels, 5 stars, budget shacks and small rooms. You’ll find a bunch of places along the beach and then again a bunch of places close to the beach. A personal favourite of mine is The Tamarind hotel, which has a lovely swimming pool too and the most courteous staff. The whole place is extremely Insta friendly and you’ll love it.

Oh man, the food in North Goa in general is so amazing. From burgers to North Indian food, from sushi to dosa – anything you crave you can get and everything is just a tiny bike ride away. Vagator has some great eateries to choose from like Antares (by Australian Master Chef Sarah Todd), Rockpool, Fish Tail and for those looking for a pure veg restaurant, may I suggest Pet Pooja Pure Veg.

Activities:

Like most of North Goa beaches, Vagator too has a lot of water activities like jet ski, banana boat rides, para sailing and more. Pro tip: Bargain with the vendors. If adventure activities are not your cup of tea, you can also just lie on the beach or enter the water, swim, or go for a massage. There are also plenty of party spots nearby, for you to go and shake your booty.

2. Candolim Beach

Candolim Beach, pronounced KAAN-DO-LEE is another gorgeous North Goa location. It’s far closer to the commercial hub-dub, but not so much that you get annoyed. Candolim is very close to most of North Goa’s party spots (not the over rated ones like Mambo’s & Tito’s), but some of the newer, more happening spots.

If you’re a seafood lover, head straight to Fisherman’s Cove which has the best ambience and the most delicious seafood. Try the butter garlic perawns which are finger-lickin’ good. There is also Tuscany Gardens if you’re craving for some yum Italian fare and pizzas. Southi & Palms N Sands are other great meal options.

From beach bungalows to tiny home stays, from villas to boutique stays – Candolim has everything. Depending on your budget, you can choose from multiple stay options.

Like most of North Goa beaches, Candolim too has a lot of water activities like jet ski, banana boat rides, para sailing and more. Pro tip: Bargain with the vendors. If adventure activities are not your cup of tea, you can also just lie on the beach or enter the water, swim, or go for a massage. There are also plenty of party spots nearby, for you to go and shake your booty. Some of the popular night clubs are SinQ, Toy Beach Club & Cohiba.

3. Anjuna Beach

A hyper popular spot, especially known for its Night Market and ‘hippie Goa’ Anjuna is the perfect place in Goa to take you on that ‘High’ (pun intended). I wouldn’t recommend Anjuna for families, but probably more for a group of frineds looking for a good time. A lot of Anjuna is filled with foreigners and hippies, so you have to be comfortable with that side of Goa.

A hugely popular spot at Anjuna is a tiny place called Baba Au Rhum, that serves yummy pizzas and food. I’d highly recommend this place for breakfast with a beer. Burger Factory, Cafe Cotinga, Artjuna (pure veg & vegan) are some of the other places I’d add to the recommendation list. Although I did got to Artjuna on my last trip and thought it to be quite over rated. The service is slow, the portion sizes are quite average, it’s quite expensive & the food wasn’t up to the mark.

From beach huts to beach villas and more, Anjuna has everything. It has super cheap stay options starting at Rs 200 a day to Rs 20,000 – take your pick.

The night market is one the biggest highlights of Anjuna. Filled with lots of thrift shopping, jewelry, clothes and more – get ready to also sharpen your bargaining skills.

I once rode down to Arambol from where I was living in Vagator and almost regretted just not living there. Arambol is absolutely stunning. It’s quiet, filled with people looking for adventure and happiness and is perfect for those with a taste for a quieter Goa, but still want to be close to the action.

Arambol has a limited range of food options. We’d recommend the Tavern or Tamarind Cafe. But if you’re a foodie looking for a yum meal, I’s suggest riding down to Vagator or somewhere else in the North.

Like most of the touristy places in Goa, Arambol has its fair share of commercial accommodation options. You’ll find a bunch of places along the beach and then again a bunch of places close to the beach.

Arambol has both a lake and a beach. You can hike to the lake, take long walks along the beach and lots more.

Imagine getting to see turtles laying eggs on a beach, or turtles hatching and baby turtles rushing to the sea. That’s what Morjim beach has. Morjim is an absolute stunner of a beach with white sand and the blue ocean in the background. The narrow Goan lanes winding up to the beach has a vibe of its own. The beach is wonderfully secure for girls too and in the evening don’t forget to watch the fishermen pull their boats in.

Morjim has a range of stay options that make for the perfect stay in Goa. I love this place called 02 villas that was not too expensive and was right across from the beach. The rooms were cosy and was at the perfect location!

Like most Goa beaches, Morjim too has a range of water sports to choose from. Go sailing or banana boat riding or whatever your adventurous soul claims.

Today, the fort lies in ruins; however, it is an incredible vantage point and offers a gorgeous view of Vagator in the south, Chapora River and Pernem in the north along with the Arabian Sea in the west. Mangueshi Temple

Reckoned to be one of the largest temples in Goa, Mangueshi shrine is situated in Mangueshi Village in Priol. The main deity in the temple is that of God Manguesh, who is believed to be the incarnation of Lord Shiva. The Church of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception

Reis Magos Fort

Another interesting point of attraction in North Goa, Reis Magos Fort is named after Reis Magos, a village on the bank of River Mandovi in Badrez. Basilica of Bom Jesus

A renowned Catholic church, which is the oldest one in Goa, Basilica of Bom Jesus is famous for its astonishing baroque architecture.
