There’s no right or wrong answer; it really depends on what attractions you’d like to see and how many days you have in Paris. Here’s a table comparing the most popular Paris passes so you can decide which is the best Paris City Pass for you.

NB: This is not an exhaustive list of all the tourist passes in Paris, I have chosen only the ones that I consider the best.

GOOD TO KNOW:  To avoid overcrowding, it is compulsory to book a time slot in some sites (e.g., Louvre Museum, Sainte-Chapelle, Château de Versailles ). This applies to all visitors, pass holders or not. Of course, the reservation of a time slot is free since, by purchasing the pass, you have already paid for the entrance tickets. The Paris Museum Pass is definitely the best pass for museum lovers. With a duration of 2, 4, or 6 consecutive days, it offers skip-the-line entry, over 60 museums, and other top attractions in Paris and the surrounding regions. Purchase your Paris Museum Pass online and choose either the 2-day, 4-day, or 6-day pass options. After the payment, you will receive a voucher by email.

Remember that some museums require booking a date and time slot to visit. The booking confirmation explains everything.

Upon arrival in Paris, go with your printed email confirmation to the agency (located near the Louvre Museum) to exchange the voucher for your Paris Museum Pass. Now, whenever you go to one of the included museums or attractions, you can skip the ticket line and show your pass upon entry.

Due to the new entrance policy of the Louvre Museum, all visitors (including the Paris pass holders) need to book a date and time slot in advance to visit the Louvre. This online reservation has no extra cost.

What if I only want to visit a couple of sights?

We’ve learned attraction passes are one of the best ways to save money when visiting new cities like Paris, and since we’ve used passes in popular places all around the world, we can show you exactly how to make the most of your time and money.

In this comparison of the Paris passes, we’ll discuss 3 major attraction pass options with pros and cons to help you decide which is the best fit for your travel style. At the end of the guide, we’ll also give you our best tips for using the passes effectively.

Our Paris Experience

We’ve visited Paris multiple times over the years and it’s one of our favorite cities in the world because there’s just so much to see and do. The City of Love (or City of Light) was the first stop on our 18 month honeymoon in 2018 and our most recent visit was an amazing 8-day trip in November 2023. In between these trips, we’ve enjoyed several shorter getaways to Paris because we just can’t get enough. Read more  about us .

During all our visits to Paris we’ve done a lot of research and had a lot of experiences with the various pass options. So far we’ve used Go City, Tiqets and the Museum Pass. And we think these passes offer the best attractions at the right price points for first time visitors.

You probably have many questions just like we did, and reading this comparison is the perfect place to find your answers. By the end of our guide, you’ll know exactly which pass to buy and how to use it. Let’s begin!

What You Need To Know

Before we get into all the details, here are a few important things to consider before you make a purchase:

1. A Paris Pass will give you instant access to the most iconic landmarks, museums, walking tours, boat cruises and food tours at a heavily discounted price. Generally, the more attractions you visit, the more you’ll save.

2. There are several attraction passes you can use for your trip to Paris. However, we think 3 of them are better than the rest based on our personal experiences. We’ll explain our favorite Paris passes first then give you a high level overview of the other options.

3. You can purchase a day or attraction pass, depending on how you want to spend your time. A day pass is better if you want to see many attractions while an attraction pass is best if you want to see a few attractions.

4. After buying your pass, you’ll receive an email directly with the pass, and you’ll have 12 months to activate it. You can download the pass to your phone or print it so you have a hard copy. We typically download them to our phones for easy access on the go. Your pass is considered active once it has been scanned at the first attraction via a QR code.

5. Major attractions often require timed reservations, so you’ll have to show your reservation along with your Paris Pass for entry. We always recommend you make timed entry reservations to make the most of your time or you may have to wait in long lines.

Travel Tip : Most of the top attractions in Paris require a timed entry reservation. You’ll be able to book these online after buying your pass.

Founded in 2014, Tiqets is one of the newer travel sites that you won’t often find on round up lists. But this is why we wanted to personally use their attraction pass to see if it was worth using. Spoiler alert, it is and we’ll tell you exactly why.

Tiqets offers admission to individual attractions, but they also sell attraction bundles for the most popular tourist spots. We like these bundles because you can visit 3 top attractions at a very competitive price point. For example, we used our Tiqets bundle to visit the Louvre, explore the Palace of Versailles and enjoy a relaxing Seine River cruise.

In addition to the attraction bundles, Tiqets offers Paris City Cards, museum passes and various attraction passes so you have a lot to choose from depending on what you want to see.

Take a look at the popular attraction based options from Tiqets:

Just to give you a money saving example so you can see it in black and white, this is what we would have spent without our Tiqets Paris & Versailles Bundle:

• Louvre – 22,00 €
• Palace of Versailles – 32,00 € *
• Seine River Cruise – 16,00 €

*Our Tiqets bundle included entry into the Palace of Versailles, Gardens and Estate of Trianon so you’d need to purchase the Versailles Passport for direct comparison. We loved visiting all three sections of the beautiful complex and recommend you do the same.

• Total cost of 3 attractions with no pass: 70,00 € (~US$ 75.00)
• Price of a Tiqets Bundle: $64.60

And there you have it, you can save about $10 on just 3 attractions with the Tiqets attraction bundle ! If you need to buy several tickets for your family or friends, that $10 per person quickly adds up. Keep in mind, attraction prices may fluctuate throughout the year with prices increasing in the summer, so if you visit in the shoulder seasons you can score an even better deal.

2. Go City Paris Pass

Go City offers attraction passes in major cities around the world. We’ve used them in Paris, London and Rome so we’re very familiar with how they work. You can buy a day based option called the All-Inclusive Pass or an attraction based option known as the Explorer Pass . We used the Explorer 3 attraction pass during our recent Paris trip.

Here’s a quick overview:

All-Inclusive Pass (day option):

• 2, 3, 4 or 6 days validity
• Days must be used in consecutive order
• Visit as many attractions as possible in that time frame
• 90+ attractions to choose from

• 60 days validity
• 50+ attractions to choose from

Travel Tip : It’s important to note that many of the famous Paris Museums are only included on the All-Inclusive Go City Paris pass. So if you want to visit the museums, be sure to choose the correct pass at checkout.

How To Choose Between All-Inclusive Or Explorer

If you’re leaning toward a Go City Pass, you’ll need to decide between a day or attraction option . For the most flexibility, buy the All-Inclusive pass. If you only want to visit a few attractions or you’re planning to visit Paris for a longer period of time, buy the Explorer pass because you have 60 days of validity.

The All-Inclusive Pass will give you the most options because it features 90+ attractions , but you’ll be limited by time. We highly recommend you make reservations and plan out your days to make the most of this pass. An All-Inclusive pass is a good choice if it’s your first time in Paris, you want to see many museums or you’re visiting with children.

We think the Explorer option is best if you only want to see a few of the top attractions. At checkout, you’ll pick between 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7 attractions but then you have 60 days to visit all of the attractions on your pass. An Explorer pass is also good for returning visitors who want to see unique attractions they might have missed the first time.

You could also consider The Paris Pass which is another option offered by Go City. It’s essentially the same as the Go City Paris All-Inclusive pass with similar attractions, and you can check out the details of the pass here .

Our Go City Paris Pass Savings

Here’s another money saving example to show you what we would have spent without our Go City passes. These are the 3 attractions we used on our Explorer pass:

• Macaron pastry making class – 59,00 €
• French Wine Tasting – 36,00 €
• Montparnasse Tower – 20,00 €

Since we used 3 different Paris passes on the same trip, we decided to use our Go City Pass for unique options you can only find in Paris. The Montparnasse Tower was a cheaper attraction, but you could book a walking tour for even more savings.

• Total cost of 3 attractions with no pass: 115,00 € (~US$ 124.00)
• Price of a Go City Paris Explorer pass with 3 attractions: 104,00 € (~US$ 112.00)

And there you have it, you can save about $12 on just 3 attractions with the Go City Pass! With that said, the 3 day pass is the cheapest option and the more attractions you add, the more you’ll save. If you want to see as much as possible, buy the All-Inclusive Pass for the biggest savings.

Here are a few pros and cons for using a Go City Paris Pass:

• Pass with the largest amount of attractions available
• Both day and attraction pass options
• Attraction reservations can be made directly on the Go City website
• Best if you want to do unique things in addition to the famous attractions
• You have to do your research because certain attractions are only available on specific passes

3. Paris Museum Pass

The Paris Museum Pass is another option offering you access to 50+ museums and monuments. You can buy the pass online at the official website here or on-site at most museums, Charles de Gaulle Airport, Orly Airport, Galeries Lafayette or Disneyland Paris.

It’s a day based pass that allows you entry into each monument or museum once within a specified time frame. Depending on your Paris itinerary, you can buy a Museum Pass for 2 days, 4 days or 6 days. We bought the 4-day pass so we didn’t have to rush around museums in a short period of time.

Here are the prices for the Paris Museum Pass:

• 2 days – 62,00 €
• 4 days – 77,00 €
• 6 days – 92,00 €

Travel Tip : On the official website, you can search museums by opening days, mandatory reservations and even nocturnal visits. So if you’ve been to Paris before, this pass might be a great option for you because you can find different experiences you might have missed.

Here’s a final money saving example to show you what we would have spent without our Paris Museum Pass:

• Musée de l’Orangerie – 12,50 €
• Musée d’Orsay – 16,00 €
• Musée Rodin – 14,00 €
• Hôtel des Invalides (Army Museum, Tomb of Napoleon I) – 15,00 €
• Arc de Triomphe (climb to the top) – 16,00 €
• Musée de Cluny – 13,00 €
• Panthéon – 13,00 €
• Conciergerie – 13,00 €
• Sainte-Chapelle – 13,00 €
• Archaeological Crypt of the Île de la Cité – 5,00 €

We like this pass because you can visit museums and famous monuments. However, it usually only includes entry into the permanent collections, so you will likely have to pay an additional fee to visit any special exhibits. To keep costs down, we personally did not pay for entry to additional exhibits.

• Total cost of 13 attractions with no pass: 171,00 € (~US$ 184.00)
• Price of a 4 day Museum Pass: 77,00 € (~US$ 83.00)

And there you have it, we saved $100 by using the Paris Museum Pass ! It sounds a lot, but it’s important to note that we were out exploring from dawn to dusk most days. You might not want to visit as many museums each day, so you might not save as much.

It’s a great option if you want to see lots of monuments or museums in Paris, but we recommend you plan out your days so you can visit as much as possible to make the most of your money. If you’re interested in this pass, we recommend you read our tips at the end of this comparison guide because you can visit museums for free on certain days and children are often free anytime.

• Ability to save money at all Paris museums
• Reservations can be booked on the official website easily
• Best if your top priority is to visit lots of museums
• Only museums and monuments included
• You might feel obligated to rush around to make the most of the pass
• Day pass only (no attraction option)
• You’ll have to visit several museums to save money

Other Paris Passes

There are a few more passes you can buy in Paris in addition to our favorites listed above:

• Paris City Pass (by Turbopass) – A 2-6 day option with limited attractions. We’ve never used a Turbopass so we can not recommend it but here is the official website for more information.
• Paris Passlib – An attraction based option where you choose 2-7 activities out of a larger list of 71 attractions. We have never used this pass and users often complain about difficulty booking attractions, but here is the official website for more information.
• Navigo Pass – This is not an attraction pass, but it’s an unlimited weekly and monthly pass for public transport. It costs 26.80 € per week and sometimes it’s confused with Paris passes.

What Is The Best Paris Pass?

Our Top Tips

Here are a few tips we’ve learned over the years to help you make the most of your Paris Pass experience:

• Entry is free for children 18 and under at most Paris museums . Before buying a child ticket or pass, verify entry requirements on official websites so you don’t waste your money.
• European students aged 18-25 receive free or discounted entry into most museums . Proper proof of ID is required for the discount.
• Everyone will receive free entry in most Paris museums the first Sunday of every month . If you’re lucky enough to visit on this day, you’ll be able to visit for free, but you will need to book reservations on the official website to guarantee your spot.
• We can typically average about 3-4 attractions per day by getting around using the Paris metro and visiting attractions that are located close to each other. Keep in mind, most attractions are open from 10:00am-6:00pm with a few exceptions offering night experiences. It might be worth changing your sleeping pattern if you’re typically an early riser because nothing opens early!
• Entry lines are different from security lines . At many attractions, you’ll have to wait in both an entry and security line. After waiting in the timed entry reservation line, you’ll then have to wait in a security line which can be frustrating. These lines are longest in summer so you may need to add a little fudge time to your itinerary.
• Visit the expensive attractions to get the most out of your pass . This includes guided tours of top attractions, food making classes and walking tours around arrondissements. For example, we paid for our Eiffel Tower climb up the stairs without a pass (22,40 €) and then used our Go City Pass to book a macaron pastry making class (59,00 €) because it was more expensive.

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions regarding Paris tourist passes.

Are Paris Passes Legit?

Yes, the Paris passes are legit. We’ve personally used Tiqets, Go City and the Paris Museum Pass ourselves in Paris. But like all things that save you money, there is a small catch because you’ll have to put in the work to get the most out of your pass.

The purpose of an attraction pass is to save money by bundling attractions, and as we’ve shown you in this guide, you can actually save money. But in return, you’ll need to get organized by booking time slots in advance where possible and arriving to attractions at times of day when they won’t be packed full of tourists.

When we used our Tiqets bundle, Go City Pass and Paris Museum Pass, the only lines we had to wait in were the reservation and security lines which is unavoidable. You’ll be in these lines with or without a pass. And if you don’t have reservations, the lines will be even longer.

If you read reviews about attraction passes online, you’ll generally find either 1 star or 5 star reviews. The 1 star reviews are from people who didn’t plan or read the fine print. The 5 stars reviews are from people who properly planned and saved a bunch of money. So in a nutshell, if you do the work, you’ll save money with the Paris Passes!

What About Fast Track Or Skip The Line?

In our experience using these passes, we never had to wait in additional lines for any attraction because we made advanced reservations and avoided peak times . The most popular attractions will require a timed entry reservation, therefore fast track or skip the line are a moot point.

If you can’t make a reservation, you should plan to visit that attraction early in the morning at opening time before it gets busy. However, you might also have to wait in a security line which is unavoidable because this is required with or without a pass.

What Is The Best Way To Buy A Paris Pass?

You should buy your attraction pass online because you’ll receive the pass instantly via email. This way you can start making reservations for your attractions straight away. Always buy the passes from the official websites using the links in our guide.

The passes in more detail....

•    Buy your pass in advance, and avoid the queues to get in.  It is pretty well impossible to visit everything covered by these two inclusive passes, even with a five or six day pass, as the list of attractions covered includes several that are well outside Paris . And the passes do not include cafés and restuarants where you will want to stop off and relax
• Paris Pass'Lib Culture . this has replaced the "museum pass". This pass keeps changing. Now it comes in 2 versions, offering entry to between 3 and 6 attractions out of a list. With the cheapest version (35€), choose 3 activities out of a list of 17. With the more expensive version (75€) choose five out of a list of 18 attractions - the difference being the Eiffel Tower. A Pass'Lib is valid a year.
•   Go City Paris explorer  This may be  a good idea if you want to include a day at Disneyland Paris, since the 104€ cost of a 3-attraction pass is the same as the indicated "normal" adult day-ticket to Disneyland alone. (For the record fixed-date adult day passes for Disneyland Paris cost between 81€ and 124€ on the Disney site depending on date). Otherwise, it is mainly useful for people spending up to two months in Paris, who know that they will want to visit certain attractions.  Passes are valid for between 2 and 7 attractions only. Take care:   the choice of attractions is capped by a "purse value" which  is the maximum amount you can use based on the standard gate price for each attraction. For example, with a 3-choice adult Explorer costing 119 €,  you can visit three attractions the sum of whose normal ticket prices is not greater than €205... which could include both Disneyland and Parc Astérix. One advantage of the Paris Explorer pass is that it can include the second floor (not the top) of the Eiffel Tower. However, be warned; the date and time of the Eiffel tower visit has to be booked in  advance, and the claimed 42€ value of the tour to the second flooor of the Eiffel Tower can be misleading. The actual cost of access to the second floor of the Eiffel tower is not 42€ but just  16.70 € if you take the elevator (lift), and just 10.50 € if you walk up (Prices as from  2023)  (see Eiffel Tower )

Paris visite:   [Public transport only ]

• Paris Museum pass   [Museums only ] - giving unlimited admission to some 60 monuments / museums in and around Paris, excluding the Eiffel Tower. Prices start at 52 €uros for two days or 66€ for four days.  This pass - best purchased on the day at the first museum you visit -  does not include any transport, so things like Seine river cruises, metro tickets and sightseeing tours must be purchased separately. See below. The Paris Museum Pass is included in the Go City inclusive pass and the Paris City Pass (see above). 
• Choose tickets à la carte :   Just buy tickets for what you have time to see.  Check out sightseeing bus tickets and river-bus tickets below; check out prices for individual monuments on their websites, which are listed at the foot of our Paris tourist attractions page .  Tickets for many attractions can now be bought on the attraction's own website, and with an online ticket (print your own or on your phone) you don't need to stand in a queue to buy on the spot.
• Hop-on hop-off sightseeing bus pass  The Open-Tour /Cityrama service, has a choice of hop-on hop-off passes from 39 € for a one-day pass, and covers four different routes (plus optional Batobus service on the Seine). Alternatively Big Bus Tours (formerly les Cars Rouges) run open-top guided tour buses linking nine major sites; a two -day pass costs  45€.
• The "Batobus" and travel on the Seine. The Batobus are river buses that go up and down the Seine from the Eiffel tower to the quai de Montebello (near Notre Dame). There are 8 stops in all. An adult day pass at the start of 2022 costs 19 €, and a 2-day pass (consecutive days) costs 21 € per adult.

WHICH PASS BEST SUITS YOUR NEEDS?

• Do you want to take in at least three paid entry attractions a day (between monuments, museums, river cruise...)  . If so, the  Paris City Pass is probably your best value option, 
• Do you want primarily to visit Paris's world-class museums, more than other attractions? If so, the  Museum Pass may be your best solution.
• Do you want to avoid the big paid-entry sites, with their queues, and enjoy Paris by visiting smaller museums, taking in Paris's free attractions (including museums), soaking in the atmosphere of the old streets and riverbanks, and enjoying the bars and cafés ? If so, you don't need a pass at all, it would be a waste of money. Just pay at the entrance to the paid-entry sites you visit, and enjoy the others for free.
• Do you plan to use the metro or buses several times in a day, including getting to and from your hotel located in central Paris or the inner suburbs? If so, the Paris city pass will give you free public transport plus entry to dozens of attractions. Alternatively the Paris Visite transport pass will just provide you with free travel in the city for the duration chosen.
• Do you want to pack in as much as possible in a short space of time, including the main sights ?  If so, the  Paris City Pass is your best value option. If you want a pass including hop-on hop-off buses, the go for the  Go city Paris inclusive Pass
• Are you spending a few weeks in Paris, during which time you'll visit different attractionsin your own time, on different days? Then maybe the Go city Paris explorer pass is best suited to your needs.

In an emergency in Paris:

More than 1,300 people died during Hajj, many of them after walking in the scorching heat

CAIRO — More than 1,300 people died during  this year’s Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia  as the faithful faced extreme high temperatures at Islamic holy sites in the desert kingdom, Saudi authorities announced Sunday.

Saudi Health Minister Fahd bin Abdurrahman Al-Jalajel said that 83% of the 1,301 fatalities were unauthorized pilgrims who walked long distances in soaring temperatures to perform the Hajj rituals in and around the holy city of  Mecca .

Speaking with the state-owned Al Ekhbariya TV, the minister said 95 pilgrims were being treated in hospitals, some of whom were airlifted for treatment in the capital, Riyadh. He said the identification process was delayed because there were no identification documents with many of the dead pilgrims.

He said the dead were buried in Mecca, without giving a breakdown.

Egypt has revoked the licenses of 16 travel agencies that helped unauthorized pilgrims travel to Saudi Arabia, authorities said.

Saudi authorities cracked down on unauthorized pilgrims, expelling tens of thousands of people. But many, mostly Egyptians, managed to reach holy sites in and around Mecca, some on foot. Unlike authorized pilgrims, they had no hotels to return to to escape the scorching heat.

In a statement Saturday, Egypt’s government said the 16 travel agencies failed to provide adequate services for pilgrims. It said these agencies illegally facilitated the travel of pilgrims to Saudi Arabia using visas that don’t allow holders to travel to Mecca.

The government also said officials from the companies have been referred to the public prosecutor for investigation.

According to the state-owned Al-Ahram daily, some travel agencies and Hajj trip operators sold Saudi tourist visas to Egyptian Hajj hopefuls, violating Saudi regulations which require exclusive visas for pilgrims. Those agencies left pilgrims in limbo in Mecca and the holy sites in scorching heat, the newspaper said.

The fatalities also included 165 pilgrims from Indonesia, 98 from India and dozens more from Jordan, Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria and Malaysia, according to an Associated Press tally. Two U.S. citizens were also reported dead.

The AP could not independently confirm the causes of death, but some countries like Jordan and Tunisia blamed the soaring heat. AP journalists saw pilgrims fainting from the scorching heat, especially on the second and third days of the Hajj. Some vomited and collapsed.

Historically, deaths are not uncommon at the Hajj, which has seen at times over 2 million people travel to Saudi Arabia for a five-day pilgrimage. The pilgrimage’s history has also seen deadly stampedes and epidemics.

But this year’s tally was unusually high, suggesting exceptional circumstances.

In 2015 a stampede in Mina killed over 2,400 pilgrims , the deadliest incident ever to strike the pilgrimage, according to an AP count. Saudi Arabia has never acknowledged the full toll of the stampede.  A separate crane collapse at Mecca’s Grand Mosque  earlier the same year killed 111.

The second-deadliest incident at the Hajj was a 1990 stampede that killed 1,426 people.

During this year’s Hajj period, daily high temperatures ranged between 117 and 120 degrees Fahrenheit (46 to 49 degrees Celsius) in Mecca and sacred sites in and around the city, according to the Saudi National Center for Meteorology. Some people fainted while trying to perform the  symbolic stoning of the devil .

The Hajj, one of the five pillars of Islam, is one of the world’s largest religious gatherings. More than 1.83 million Muslims performed the Hajj in 2024, including more than 1.6 million from 22 countries, and around 222,000 Saudi citizens and residents, according to the Saudi Hajj authorities.

Saudi Arabia has spent billions of dollars on crowd control and safety measures for those attending the annual five-day pilgrimage, but the sheer number of participants makes it difficult to ensure their safety.

Climate change could make the risk even greater. A 2019 study by experts at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology found that even if the world succeeds in mitigating the worst effects of climate change, the Hajj would be held in temperatures exceeding an “extreme danger threshold” from 2047 to 2052, and from 2079 to 2086.

Islam follows a lunar calendar, so the Hajj comes around 11 days earlier each year. By 2029, the Hajj will occur in April, and for several years after that it will fall in the winter, when temperatures are milder.

As the final World Athletics Combined Events Tour Gold meeting ahead of the Paris 2024 Games, the Stadtwerke Ratingen Mehrkampf-Meeting on 22-23 June will be an important stepping stone ahead of the Olympics.

Some of the leading contenders in Ratingen are already in a position to qualify for the Games, but several others are on the brink of qualification and so will be looking to boost their world ranking in the German city this weekend.

Karel Tilga leads the decathlon field. The Estonian hasn’t competed since last year’s World Championships in Budapest – where he finished fourth with a PB of 8681 – and achilles and knee injuries kept him out of this year’s World Indoor Championships and the European Championships.

The 26-year-old already has the Olympic qualifying mark, so he won’t have to worry about big scores this weekend in Ratingen. He will, however, be keen to put together a confidence-boosting series, having not competed for 10 months.

Three other athletes in the field – Spain’s Jorge Urena, Australia’s Daniel Golubovic and Rik Taam of the Netherlands – are currently in an Olympic qualifying position in the world rankings, but they’ll need a strong performance this weekend to hold on to those places.

Urena, the 2019 European indoor champion, was second in Ratingen last year with a PB of 8381. The Spaniard has a best this year of 7505, set earlier this month in Arganda del Rey, but he’ll be hoping for a mark nearer to – or even in excess of – 8000 points in Ratingen.

Taam finished one place behind Urena in Ratingen last year, also setting a PB (8326). The Dutch all-rounder went on to finish 13th at the World Championships in Budapest, but he hasn’t completed a combined events competition since then. As the athlete currently in the 24th and final qualifying spot for the Olympics, he’ll be highly motivated going into this weekend.

Golubovic is sandwiched between Urena and Taam in the road to Paris qualifying rankings. The Commonwealth and Oceanian silver medallist will be competing in Ratingen for the first time in what he hopes will be a key performance towards securing selection for his first Olympics.

Two German men – world leader Leo Neugebauer and 2019 world champion Niklas Kaul – already have the Olympic qualifying standard, while a third, Manuel Eitel, is ranked within the qualifying quota. None of these will be competing in Ratingen, but a few other German decathletes will be in action in a bid to move ahead of Eitel in the rankings.

Tim Nowak, runner-up in Ratingen two years ago, set a PB of 8282 in Götzis last month, then went on to finish ninth at the European Championships with 8150. Ratingen will mark his third decathlon within five weeks, but a solid performance certainly won’t harm his world rankings points.

Kai Kazmirek, the 2017 world bronze medallist, was a non-finisher in Arona last month. The two-time Ratingen winner last completed a decathlon in July last year, winning in Bydgoszcz with 8038, but his PB (8580) is the second-best of the field, behind Tilga.

Germany’s Felix Wolter set his PB of 8299 when winning in Marburg last year, and he came close to it in Götzis five weeks ago with 8190. He’ll be aiming to match or improve on his fifth-place finish in Ratingen last year.

Czech decathlete Vilem Strasky is another who’s within sniffing distance of an Olympic qualifying spot, while the likes of Ondrej Kopecky, Australia’s Cedric Dubler and Poland’s Pawel Wiesiolek will also be looking to pull out something special ahead of the Games.

Two-time Ratingen winner Carolin Schafer will start as the favourite for the heptathlon. The 2017 world silver medallist has been in solid form this year and got off to a promising start at the recent European Championships before recording three fouls in the shot put.

If she’s able to hold her nerve this weekend, she could notch up yet another Ratingen victory, becoming just the fourth woman to win three or more times in the German city. But she’ll face strong competition from the likes of compatriot Vanessa Grimm, Austria’s Verena Mayr and China’s Zheng Ninali.

Grimm came within 16 points of her PB to finish fifth in Götzis last month with 6307. She is currently within the qualifying quota for Paris, but only just as she’s in 23rd place – one place behind Mayr and one place ahead of Zheng.

Mayr won in Ratingen in 2019 with a national record of 6591 then went on to claim bronze at the World Championships later that year. More recently she was eighth in Götzis with 6196 but then, like Schafer, did not finish at the European Championships.

Zheng, the Asian Games champion, currently sits in the 24th and final qualifying spot for Paris. Earlier this year she scored 6164 in California, so she’ll be keen to improve on that to climb into a safer position in the world rankings.

Several other women heading to Ratingen are just outside of the top 24 qualifying positions.

Australia’s Tori West set a PB of 6245 to finish sixth in Götzis and is now just two places behind Zheng on the road to Paris list. Ireland’s Kate O’Connor and Ukraine’s Yuliya Loban are close behind West, while Sarah Lagger and teenager Jana Koscak are also in the top 32.

The likes of French duo Esther Conde-Turpin and Celia Perron will also be highly motivated, with a home Games on the horizon, so too will Austria’s Ivona Dadic, a two-time runner-up in Ratingen.

CRANS-MONTANA, Switzerland (AP) — Olympic champion Tom Pidcock rode away from Mathias Fluckiger to win the mountain bike World Cup race at Crans-Montana on Sunday in a strong performance ahead of his turn with Ineos Grenadiers in the Tour de France.

World silver medalist Loana Lecomte won the women’s race as she prepares for the Paris Games on home soil.

Pidcock, who overcame some trouble to narrowly win the short-track race Saturday, had no problem on the cross-country course in southwest Switzerland. He finished in 1 hour, 26.28 seconds, giving him more than a minute on the rest of the field.

In fact, Pidcock indicated that he took it easy after building a lead early in the race.

“I made a couple of mistakes after getting my gap. I’ve got big things coming up and I don’t think my teammates (on Ineos) would be too happy if I’d binned myself today,” Pidcock said.

Fluckiger, who finished second to Pidcock on the Olympic course in Tokyo, was 1:10 back in second place in a World Cup run on his home track. Luca Braidot outsprinted World Cup overall leader Nino Schurter in the mud for the bronze medal.

Pidcock has been spending more time on the mountain bike ahead of the Paris Games, where he is heavily favored to win a second consecutive gold medal. But the British multi-disciplinary star will be back on the road bike this week, preparing for the Grand Depart in the Tour de France on Saturday in Florence, Italy.

In the women’s race, Lecomte broke through with her first World Cup win of the season, giving her a big shot of momentum as she begins turning her attention to the Olympic races on July 28-29 at Elancourt Hill just outside of Paris.

“It’s good to be back,” she said. “I love this track. Even if we had a dry track, it’s a real mountain bike track, with a lot of technical sections, and very physical. I can’t wait to be back here for the world championships next year.”

Alessandra Keller of Switzerland was 46 seconds back in second place. Puck Pieterse of the Netherlands took bronze.

There is one more World Cup race before the Olympics on July 7 in Les Gets, France.
