Moscow State Circus has set up the big top at Kingsbridge Road car park and their new show, called Babushkin Sekret, features some of the best acrobatic performances in the world.

Included in the daredevil production is a stunt that has never been seen by a UK audience, where a girl performs the splits on the heads of two high wire walkers at 30ft.

It’s a real coup for the town to host the spectacle as it is only the second place in West Yorkshire that the circus will visit as part of the two-year tour.

Director Paul Archer said: “We have had a lot of support from the public in the town and this demand has brought us back.

“Sometimes the circus is seen as a dirty word but that’s because there’s a lot of not very good quality circuses out there.

“But we have world-class artists who have performed at the biggest circuses in the world, including the famous Monte Carlo festival.”

The show is based on The 12 Chairs, an old Russian tale about some treasure which is secreted in a piece of furniture.

It features a team of 28 of some of Russia’s most talented circus artists, including clowns, jugglers, contortionists, trapeze artists and aerial acrobats.

Mr Archer said: “The high wire acts in this show are the like of which have never been seen for 40 to 50 years in the UK.

“We have five high wire walkers up there at the same time and the act with the lady doing the splits.

“I believe the company has assembled the best programme ever to tour the UK.”

The circus has previously performed at Greenhead Park but had to find an alternative site to be able to bring the show back to the town this year.

The circus will be performing at Kingsbridge Road car park until Sunday.
