Day 1 - Friday, September 13th A Warm Welcome to Flanders

Upon your arrival at  Brussels International Airport , you will be welcomed by your battlefield tour guide, who will escort you to our coach and driver before we tour the short distance to  West Flanders ,  Belgium . This afternoon we will take an orientation of the  Ypres Salient Battlefields  with visits to the  German cemetery  of  Langemark , and the   ‘Brooding Soldier’   at  St Julien , to commemorate the first gas attacks against the 1st Canadian Corps in 1915. We end our introduction with a visit to   Essex Farm , the place where John McCrae wrote the famous poem “In Flanders Fields”. Lastly, we stop in the medieval city of  Ypres , also known as the ‘City of Peace’, for a brief orientation tour, before continuing back to  Kortrijk  for our  welcome dinner together and an early night’s rest. (D)

Accommodation: Kortrijk/Ypres Area or similar

Day 2 - Saturday, September 14th Exploring the Ypres Salient

We begin our day with a visit to the  Tyne Cot Commonwealth Cemetery  – the largest Commonwealth Cemetery, of any conflict, in the world. We will also explore the Battle of Passchendaele, with visits to the  Passchendaele Museum , in  Zonnebeke , and the   Crest Farm Memorial , in  Passendale . After lunch, we will explore the  Hooghe Crater , and  Hill 62  – a small area of the original battlefield and part of the Canadian Front Line. In the late afternoon, enjoy the chance to explore the historically rich city of  Ypres   at your own pace. We come together again for an early group meal in the heart of the medieval Ypres’  Grote Markt . Tonight, at 8 PM, we will witness the iconic and historic  Last Post Ceremony , at the  Menin Gate Memorial to the Missing , led by the Ieper Fire Department & the Last Post Association. In this last Centennial Year remembering the First World War, the Last Post Association promises their daily act of homage to be among the most memorable acts of remembrance that we will witness on tour. (B, D)

Day 3 - Sunday, September 15th Exploring the Last 100 Days of WW1

We say our farewells to  Flanders, Belgium  this morning and depart for the   Northern battlefields of France  – but first – we will make a significant stop at the  St. Symphorien Cemetery  near the city of  Mons . This is where the first and last actions in the First World War took place. Consequently, this is also where the first and last Allied casualties of the Great War are laid to rest. We continue our story of the Last 100 Days with a visit to the city of  Cambrai , where we will stop for lunch and orientation of the deeply rooted Canadian action, still visible in the scars of the city’s architecture. We continue further still, to  Bourlon Wood , to see the memorial which commemorates the Canadian Corps’ crossing at the  Canal du Nord   on November 11th, 1918. The stairs leading up to the memorial are lined with ancient lime trees that were nursed back to health after having been devastated by shellfire during the battle for Bourlon Wood. We finish our day in the city of  Arras , where we will enjoy a   group dinner   together before our overnight. (B, D)

Accommodation: Arras or similar

Day 4 - Monday, September 16th The Battlefields of 1917: Vimy Ridge & Hill 70

Today we take a tour to  Vimy Ridge Memorial Park . It was on Hill 145, on April 1917, that Canada truly became a nation in the eyes of the world. Its troops combined and stormed Vimy Ridge after all other allied forces had failed to do so. We will tour the tunnels, trenches and memorial, as well as the  new interpretation centre , which opened in Spring 2017 for the 100th Anniversary. Enjoy a locally prepared picnic lunch en route. In the afternoon, we continue to see the new  Canadian Memorial at Hill 70 . Here we will be discussing the Battle of Hill 70 – sometimes dubbed as “Canada’s Forgotten Battle”. When our explorations of the battlefields are through, we head back to  Arras  to explore the French city at our own pace. With its many shops, cafes and restaurants, take the time to also enjoy dinner on your own this evening. (B, L)

Day 5 - Tuesday, September 17th Exploring the Somme Battlefields

We will depart from  Arras  this morning, journeying through the Somme region en-route to the city of  Amiens . Our day will be spent exploring the  Somme  – making visits to the  Memorial to the Missing at Thiepval , as well the preserved battlefield memorial park at  Beaumont Hamel   – dedicated to the Royal Newfoundland and Labrador Regiment who lost so many men on that first day of battle. After enjoying a locally made picnic lunch at the  Old Blighty Cafe  we will continue on to view the  Lochnagar Crater , among one of the largest craters on the battlefields of the Western Front. We will also visit the city of  Albert , where we will explore the  Somme 1916 Museum , hidden deep underneath the city’s Romanesque Basilica. We will then head out to the coast for our dinner and overnight. (B, L, D)

Accommodation: Dieppe or similar

Day 6 - Wednesday, September 18th Dieppe

This morning, we will first explore the  Blue Beach   at   Puys , where we can view the gun emplacements on the cliff tops, which, on Aug 19, 1942, were responsible for such terrible Canadian casualties. We will then visit the   Dieppe Canadian Cemetery   before travelling to  Green Beach  at  Pourville . We will also view the main landing beaches of  Red   and  White   on the  Dieppe seafront . Later, we will continue our journey to  Normandy Landing Beaches for our hotel check-in, dinner, and overnight. (B, D)

Accommodation: Port en Bessin or similar

Day 7 - Thursday, September 19th Normandy Beaches

Today we will focus on the  D-Day Normandy invasion . We will begin our morning with a visit to  Pointe du Hoc   where the cratered landscape of the German battery, taken by the US Rangers in 1944, can be observed. We will continue to  Omaha Beach  and the  American Military Cemetery  to discover the appalling difficulties required for landing on Bloody Omaha. After leaving Omaha, we visit   La Chaos , the German offshore battery, which today sits relatively intact, even after 70+ years. This afternoon, we visit the  Mulberry Harbors  in  Arromanches   before heading back to  Caen  for another evening meal together. (B, D)

Day 8 - Friday, September 20th Juno Beach & The Battle of Normandy

We will begin our day with a visit to the  Battle of Normandy Museum  in  Bayeux , offering the visitor an illustrative understanding of the decisive actions that were taken in the liberation of Western Europe in 1944. With a refreshed perspective, we head to the Canadian battlefields & beaches of Normandy. Our first stop will be to  Verrieres Ridge   to view the area where the Black Watch suffered severe casualties in “Operation Spring”. We continue on to the  Juno Beach Center , dedicated to the 3rd Division landings as well as Canada’s full involvement during World War II. Before heading back for dinner, we will visit the  Queens’ Own Rifles House , the first house liberated by Canadian forces when they stormed the beaches at Juno on June 6th, 1944. Our day will end with a solemn visit to the  Beny-sur-Mer , Canadian Military Cemetery . (B, D)

Day 9 - Saturday, September 21st Journey to Paris

After checking out of our hotel this morning, we will finish our tour of the Normandy region with visits to see the Canadian Memorial Garden in the Abbaye des Ardennes, as well as Pegasus Bridge – where the 6th British Airborne landed, captured and liberated the first house in Europe, the Café Gondree. We will then take the journey down to Paris. As we drive into the city, enjoy a coach orientation tour with our guide, before a river cruise of the Seine and a visit to the Notre Dame of Paris Cathedral . Tonight, we will enjoy an early farewell dinner together at the Jardin du Notre Dame. From here we will say farewell to some of our fellow travellers who are staying in Paris before heading up to Paris’ Charles du Galle International Airport for out overnight. (B,D)

Explore more of Vimy in 360 degrees

There are 11,285 names engraved on the Vimy monument. They are the dead whose bodies have never been found, who have no final resting place. The monument was designed by Walter Alward and was unveiled in 1936.

The tunnels beneath Vimy Ridge provided underground passage for soldiers to move to the front lines. Many of the soldiers who went up and over the ridge in the morning spent their final night underground.

There are nearly 3000 graves that rest at Canada No. 2 cemetery on the ground of Vimy Ridge, including 378 Canadian who fought during the battle.

WW1 Battlefield Tour

A draft itinerary for canadian visitors wanting to get a good general understanding of the role of the canadian expeditionary force’s role on the western front from 1915, whilst putting it in the larger context of the overall conduct and strategy of the allied command. the tour may not follow in the order shown here, but will include everything as noted..

The tour will be entirely based out of Arras. Arras is much better placed for visiting the areas of the old Western Front, and is a short drive from Ypres, Vimy and the Somme region. It is easy to get to and from Paris, with the high-speed TGV service taking just over an hour, with regular departures from Gare du Nord in Paris.

Day One: Arras to Ypres

The Ypres Salient was the epicentre for British endeavours during the war from October 1914, and Canadian troops were engaged at some of the seminal moments of fighting in this area. From the first successful use of poison gas against Allied troops, to the slog of the final surmounting of the Passchendaele Ridge, men from Canada were involved in some of the bitterest struggles on this part of the front. During our time in the Salient we will spend time at and tell the story of Canada’s involvement at the following locations:

– Essex Farm ADS and John McCrae’s Dressing Station

– Vancouver Corner and the 1st Canadian Division’s defence against the German use of chlorine gas, April 1915

– Hill 62 and the fighting for Mount Sorrel in June 1916

– October – November 1917 and the fighting up the Passchendaele Ridge, Bellevue Spur and the seizing of Passchendaele

– PPCLI on the Bellewarde Ridge – May 1915

– Canadian actions around Kemmel and Plogsteert – 1915

The day will end with attendance the Last Post Ceremony under the Menin Gate Memorial, which commemorates over 54,000 British and Commonwealth soldiers who died in the Ypres Salient and have no known grave. Over 7,000 of these men were fighting with the Canadian Expeditionary Force.

Leaving Belgium, today’s route takes us into France and past Festubert, and Hill 70, the scene of CEF actions in 1917. A stop at Loos British Cemetery is worthwhile to hear the remarkable story of Private Arthur Durie and a mother’s love of her son.

No visit to the Western Front could be considered complete without a visit to Vimy Ridge and the Canadian Memorial Park which was established there as a gift from France in the post war period.

Vimy is intrinsically linked to Canada even to this day, on account of the stunning victory that was won there in April 1917 during the opening stages of the Battle of Arras. Within the Memorial Park the role of Canada’s contribution is explored, with preserved trenches and tunnels to be visited, but the highlight is to see close up the magnificent Vimy Memorial, surely the most beautiful of all of the big memorials on the Western Front. Designed by Walter Allward, a sculptor from Toronto, it was dedicated in 1936, and stands as a testament to peace, while having inscribed on the base the names of over 11,000 Canadians who died in France and who have no known grave. Standing on top of the ridge, it allows the modern day visitor an opportunity to fully understand the strategic importance of taking this vital German strong point.

Day Three:  The Somme

The Somme region is quite beautiful nowadays, as it was pre-war, with small villages located amongst rolling open chalk farmland. But in 1916, it was the scene of the first major British offensive on the Western Front, designed to break the deadlock and stalemate of trench warfare. Commencing on 1st July 1916, the battle dragged on for four and half months, by the end of which the Allies had advanced a maximum of seven miles and the British had suffered an estimated 400,000 casualties, of whom over 120,000 were dead.

From a 1916 Canadian perspective, the CEF did not become involved in the fighting on the Somme until early September 1916, but, the then independent Dominion of Newfoundland was involved on the first day. As part of the British 29th Division, the Newfoundland Regiment was involved in offensive operations intended to capture the village of Beaumont-Hamel.  Advancing towards the German positions from about 8.45 am, approximately 800 strong, within three quarters of an hour, the Regiment had suffered 684 casualties. It had, in effect, been wiped out.

Now, as a tribute to the men who fought and fell, the Newfoundland Memorial Park is an essential stop for any battlefield visitor to the Somme. The Park has been left, as far as nature allows, in the way that the ground was in 1918. Although cleared of potential dangerous items, the British and German trench lines are clearly visible and the Park includes Memorials to the units that fought over the ground in 1916 as well as three poignant battlefield cemeteries. A walk around the park allows for a good understanding of what was both expected, and the fate that befell, not only the men of the Newfoundland Regiment, but also those of many British regiments who advanced over this ground in 1916.

Canada’s major involvement in the Somme campaign commenced in September 1916, with the capture of the village of Courcelette, but soon became a slog through the autumn and early winter months of attrition, bloodshed and sacrifice. The Canadian Memorial Park outside the village remembers those men, as do the nearby military cemeteries.

The Somme area has many fascinating locations which recall the largely British campaign, and nothing is more eloquent in its expression of loss than the mighty Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, which dominates the skyline and the surrounding battlefields.

Day Four: The 100 Days

1918 was the decisive year for the Allies and men of the Canadian Corps played an important role in ensuring ultimate victory. Initially brought down from the Arras area to support the Australian Imperial Corps in their advance from Amiens on 8th August 1918, the CEF were soon returned to the familiar area of Arras, where they continued to spearhead the advance in this sector, breaking the Drocourt-Quéant Switch Line, crossing the Canal du Nord in September 1918 and securing the important high ground of Bourlon Wood in front of Cambrai a few weeks later. Thereafter, the Canadians were involved in a series of operations, constantly advancing against a still determined enemy, heading towards Valenciennes and ultimately moving into Belgium to take part in the final actions in Mons, where over four years previously, the very first shots fired by a British soldier at German cavalry men had taken place.

The tour will end by returning clients to Arras for onward travel by rail, either back to Paris or to London by Eurostar.

Additional tour information

As with our other tour options, this tour will be a private, personalized tour, available anytime on a first come-first serve basis, ideally for groups of 1-3 people.

However, if the size of your group exceeds 3 people, then your tour fee will increase accordingly and you will be responsible for all costs necessary in providing an appropriately sized vehicle to carry the members of your group, as well as the guide.

As with our other tours, our personalization service allows you to participate in the structure of the tour. If you have any special requests, like following the footsteps of a particular Veteran or unit, we are happy to accommodate, whenever possible. If you do have an interest in a particular soldier or unit, please provide us with his details and we will do some preliminary research, to make your tour an even more meaningful experience.

This tour, as well as our others, will be costed on the following basis. The price quoted will be for all ground transportation within the battlefield areas, with professional guide(s).  It does not include anything else . Of course, we are happy to make recommendations to help with your travel planning, like hotels, B&B’s.

You will be responsible for getting to Arras and forward travel at the end of the tour, either with your own rented vehicle or the train –  http://www.sncf.com/en/horaires-info-trafic/trajet/resultats .

Two day tours should never be considered if the guest’s goal is to visit all three main salients – Ypres/Passchendaele; Vimy Ridge/Arras & the Somme. From one of my senior guides – “It could be driven but not with stops to view the battlefields & explain what happened. I would not do it.”

Single day tours from Paris are also available. In this case, the primary site choice is almost always Vimy Ridge, combined with a visit to Ypres/Passchendaele or to Beaumont Hamel/Newfoundland Park. All three cannot be done in one day. So, it has to be either Vimy/Ypres or Vimy/Beaumont Hamel. All our WWI Tours are based in Arras , given its location between Ypres and Beaumont Hamel. Here is a handy link for train service to Arras – http://www.virail.com/train-paris-arras .

Visiting the Canadian War memorial at Vimy Ridge, France

The area of north west France around Arras is the site of countless battlefields, but one that makes a particularly memorable visit is the Canadian War Memorial and visitor centre at Vimy ridge which we visited while on a recent holiday with Eurocamp .

We were slightly lost as we drove through the French village of Vimy looking for signs to the Canadian National Vimy Memorial . Suddenly we spotted a four wheel drive with the Canadian maple leaf on the side. “Follow that car!”, I instructed my husband and it soon led us up a road where pines on either side were set on grassy ground that was strangely undulating. This ground where sheep were now grazing was the spot where on Easter Monday, 1917 all four divisions of the Canadian Expeditionary Force had fought the battle for Vimy Ridge. The uneven ground was the remains of trench systems that had long ago collapsed and the grass grown over them.

Vimy Ridge, near Arras, France

We drew up in the Vimy Ridge visitor centre near a couple of coaches and entered the low red building set among the trees. Inside we wandered around reading the information about what had taken place here at Vimy and at the entrance saw a board with photographs of the fresh young faces of students who were part of the autumn student guide programme, warmly dressed in their green and red uniforms. We watched some of the video playing, describing the renovation project of the white limestone Canadian National Vimy Memorial by Canadian sculptor Walter Seymour Allward. The memorial was completed in 1936 and was opened by King Edward VIII but over the years the wind and rain had taken their toll and so a 3 year renovation project was launch to restore the monument to it’s original pristine glory. They even had to open the quarry in Croatia that had been the source of the original white limestone and the monument was re-dedicated by Queen Elizabeth II in 2007.

As we went outside we wandered through the trench systems preserved with concrete ‘sandbags’ and looked through rifle positions towards the former German lines. At the top of the rise we spotted one of the student guides giving a tour of the grounds and tagged on to the end of it, hoping that we wouldn’t be turned away. The young man was confident and informative as he gave us the facts of the battle and took us around the different parts of the site, ending with a walk through one of the underground tunnels that were used to move soldiers up to the front lines. Unfortunately the tour would only allow 25 people underground as I was the 26th I volunteered to stay above ground, taking photos while the rest of my family went through and saw the different rooms leading off the tunnels.

I was so impressed with this young man that I ran after him when the tour finished hoping to shoot some video of him talking about the Vimy battle site, but he was about to take another tour underground and couldn’t stop at that point. The student guides spend 4 months in France, living locally and showing visitors around the site of trenches and tunnels as well as manning the visitor centre. We learned later that there are regular tours around the site that are free and can be booked in the visitor centre.

Vimy Ridge memorial, near Arras, France

After our tour we moved on to the towering Canadian war memorial itself on the high ground just up the road. This ridge was a strategic spot to be fought over as the high ground gives a view over the surrounding countryside. The memorial is build of stark white limestone with twin towers and statues at the base and at the top of each tower, representing the sympathy of Canada for the dead and the desire for peace in the future. On the East side is a large figure of sorrowing Mother Canada, looking out over the Douai plain that was fought over so fiercely, and around the sides of the monument are carved the names of those Canadians killed in France with no known grave.

Vimy Ridge memorial, near Arras, France

Although the terrain was rolling rather than hilly, this piece of high ground was important to be won and the battle of Vimy ridge became a symbol of Canadian unity and achievement due to the way that all four divisions fought successfully together.

What a wonderful opportunity for those Canadian students I thought, to live and work together in France for 4 months in a place where in a different generation at a different time, they might have been the soldiers in those same trenches and tunnels, fighting for this spot of land. What an imaginative way to inspire the students participanting in this scheme with a pride in their nation’s achievements at the same time as educating them in the horrors that war will bring.

If you’ve participated in the Canadian Student Guide program at Vimy or the other monuments in northern France, I’d love to hear how you found the experience. We really enjoyed our visit to Vimy Ridge and our children also found it fascinating to hear the stories and run through the trenches and feel a little of what war is really like.

We visited Vimy Ridge while a guest of Eurocamp at the holiday parc at La Croix du Vieux Pont at Berny Riviere . The parc is ideal for a family holiday, set in beautiful countryside and with many sports facilities and entertainments on site. It will take around 2 hrs to drive from the parc to Vimy near Arras, or it would make an ideal stop on the route between Calais and Berny Riviere.

RCHS Student Visits Vimy Ridge

tours of vimy ridge

In April, Grade 11, Rosetown Central High School student Jan Nasibog travelled to France to visit the site of the Battle of Vimy Ridge.

During World War I, the Canadian victory at the Battle of Vimy Ridge in 1917 is considered a defining moment for Canada, when the country emerged from under the shadow of Britain and felt capable of greatness. Canadian troops also earned a reputation as formidable, effective troops because of the stunning success. But it was a victory at a terrible cost, with more than 10,000 killed and wounded. Learn more about the Battle of Vimy Ridge here.

Jan made the journey to the site of the Battle of Vimy Ridge as part of a contingent of 20 students from most Canadian provinces sponsored by the Vimy Foundation. The Vimy Foundation is dedicated to remembering and commemorating Canada’s contributions during World War I and each year funds a trip by Canadian students to Vimy and other World War I sites in northern France and southern Belgium. Students apply for the privilege to be part of this delegation and this year Jan was one of the successful applicants. Learn more about the Vimy Foundation here.

Jan landed at the Paris airport on April 2 and stayed in France and Belgium until April 10. The major site visited on the trip was the imposing Canadian Vimy Memorial, which also includes a visitor centre and museum. It is about two hundred kilometres north of Paris. She also had the opportunity to tour several other World War I sites including memorials to the American First Division, the Flanders Field Museum, the Australian War Memorial, and Ypres, Belgium, the site of another major battle of World War I where Canadian soldiers distinguished themselves.

Reflecting on her experience, Jan wrote the following:

"Commemorating the Battle of Vimy Ridge, more than 100 years later, serves as a reminder that the human spirit lives on through remembrance. It is our responsibility as youth—from diverse backgrounds and provinces—that we commemorate our history. The world can never truly forget the many aspects of the First World War, and it is through us that the memory lives on for many more generations."
