XOVERLAND Exclusive: We Put the 2024 Toyota Tacoma Trailhunter to the Test

Until recently, vehicle manufacturers didn’t supply off-the-lot options for overlanders, so we’ve adapted by modifying vehicles to suit our needs. Little did we know Toyota secretly developed the solution many have been waiting for—the Tacoma Trailhunter, a rugged new platform designed for overlanders to “go far.” Expedition Overland has filmed [...]

Our Complete Expedition Portfolio

“A travel company that intends to open up the most remote corners of the world with obsessively planned driving expeditions."

overland tours

“Jaw-dropping overland journeys for guests from all around the world… allowed us to see in ways we wouldn’t have been able to otherwise.”

“It feels liberating, allowing us to feel the thrill of discovery first rather than second-hand, as you would as a passenger.”

“For a motoring expedition that goes beyond the guidebook, Nomadic Road delivers.”

Explorer's Perspective

“Going on this trip, you are allowed to take a little bit of risk, something very different, but you actually feel very comfortable all the time. Because there is always someone to help you in each type of situation. So, it’s like taking all the risk, but completely calm while taking off, which is the best.”

Katie , New York, Mongolia Expedition 2019

“There was a moment during the expedition – endless white on my right and left. That’s the moment I felt, I’m a single small point in this whole universe."

Arda , Istanbul, Lake Baikal Expedition 2022

“The worst moment was not having control over time. Madagascar’s RN5 is not a forgiving road, and a lot can happen there. So, I have taken something positive out of it. Yes, sometimes it’s good to not have control of time. It’s nice to let go and go with the flow.”

Natasha , Delhi, Madagascar Expedition 2022

You are doing things yourselves and not being told by somebody to do this or do that. It’s all about you. You are experiencing it yourselves. It’s unbelievable. It’s totally a different experience.

Deepak , Bombay, Tibet Expedition 2018.

I think one must accept that all adventure trips would have their share of problems. And many of them are unexpected. Looking for a pond in the middle of nowhere and also being warned that there could be crocodiles in it, and we are camping next to it. That was an out of sight experience.

Ashlyn , Dubai, Zambezi Meander Expedition 2021

My advice for those who wish to embark on a journey with Nomadic Road. You should be aware that it’s an experience. It’s not a holiday. It’s really something else. Consider it before you go. But go. Just do it.

Matthijs , Amsterdam, Mongolia Expedition 2022.

The nomadic road Experience

Skin in the game.

Be ready to expect the unexpected during an expedition. Taking the brunt of a sandstorm, hailstorm, snowstorm or even a heavy downpour is just one of the many ways you’ll come face to face with mother nature. Keep in mind that this is an expedition and not your usual holiday. You need to be mentally ready to face these challenges which constitute a holistic experience. Be rest assured, our experienced expedition team will be watching you from a distance and will always be there whenever needed.

When we say we take you to remote places, it entails hot deserts, wet jungles, tall mountains, cold glaciers, or wherever nature is at its best. You can’t script this level of reality. Our expedition programs are designed in such a way that we leave our comfort zones and head out in the back of beyond. We orchestrate eye-opening journeys, with our exclusive insights and access to some of the most uncharted places on Earth. This is as real as ‘real’ can get.

Our expeditions are designed with curious and intelligent people in mind. With us, you’ll see a destination in a different light and discover things you won’t find out about any other way. If you are someone who is open to travel in a niche group of explorers from across the globe, then our Signature Expeditions should be right up your alley. Or if you are someone who prefers to keep things to yourself or prefer to travel in your own natural group, then our Custom Expeditions should be your choice.

Africa Overland Tours & Vacations

 • Overland Tours
 • Africa Overland Tours & Holidays

Overland travel is in our blood.

In 1988, two young backpackers gathered some friends and set off across the continent in a modified ex-council truck. They must have had fun, because when they got home they started a little company called Intrepid. These days, our itineraries are more polished, our vehicles are custom-built for overlanding and our leaders are passionate and expert locals, but we’ve still got that sense of adventure.

You’ll get off the beaten track, connect with local people and see more animals than you can poke your (respectfully distant) binoculars at. An African Overland tour is truly a drive on the wild side.

Our accommodation styles

The style of accommodation depends on the adventure you choose. When in cities and towns we often stay in hotels, but on the majority of Africa Overland tours you’ll be camping – sometimes in campsites that you’ll share with other tour groups, and sometimes in the middle of the wilderness (don’t worry, our leaders are well trained to protect you and it’s very safe!).

Campsites facilities can be basic. Sometimes the showers are cold, and some toilets are of the squat or hole-in-the-ground variety. You’ll be expected to pitch your own tent each night, but the two-person canvas tents provided are easy to set up and come with built-in mosquito screens.

overland tours

Our Overland vehicles

Intrepid’s fleet of Overland safari trucks are custom-built for wildlife viewing and off-track adventure. While the seats are comfortable, the ride can be pretty bumpy at times. Most trucks have electrical plugs for charging phones and cameras, but we’ve made a conscious decision not to have Wi-Fi on-board (who needs the internet when you’ve got Africa to gaze at?). And there’s “natural air-conditioning” – meaning you’ll need to open a window for fresh air.

While we regularly service our trucks, the occasional breakdown may happen (don’t worry, your leader is well trained to deal with these situations). But that’s all part of the adventure.

Meet our leaders

If you're thinking of travelling on an overland safari through Africa with Intrepid Travel, but you're not entirely sure what it will be like – then take a look behind the scenes of a real overland experience and meet our leaders.

What crew will accompany me on an Overland tour?

Good things come in threes, right? On most Overland tours in Africa, you don’t just get one local leader, but a crew of three – a leader, driver and a cook! The leader is there to organise logistics, keep you safe and ensure the trip runs smoothly. While not being guides in the traditional sense, our African leaders – many of them hailing from Kenya and South Africa – have a broad knowledge of their destinations, a keen eye for wildlife-spotting and a passion for their homeland. At some points, we may also use specialist local guides to give you deeper insight into a place, especially when tracking and identifying game.

It’s the cook’s job to shop, oversee meal preparation and ensure the group keeps a high standard of hygiene. Your driver’s responsibility is to maintain the truck and get you from A to B safely. By the end of the trip, the trio of leader, driver and cook often feel like new friends.

Some Overland trips in Southern Africa have a smaller group size of maximum 16 people. On these tours, you'll only have two crew members with you – a leader and a driver. In these instances, the leader will help prepare meals. Check out the ‘Group Leader’ section of the Essential Trip Information to find out how many crew you’ll have on your trip.

What’s the group size?

You’ll be part of a group of maximum 22 people of all ages and nationalities, from all walks of life. That’s what overland travel is all about: sharing experiences with like-minded adventurers from around the world. On our longer combination trips, your crew and group may change halfway through. Be prepared to spend a lot of time with each other and to make some new friends; it happens a lot.

What are drive days like?

Africa Overland tours involve a lot of time on the road covering long distances, and many early morning starts. Some days we’ll drive for five, six, even nine hours at a time, although we take regular breaks. One of the beauties of overlanding is seeing changing landscapes and local village life roll by right outside your window, but not every traveller is comfortable with so much driving. Changes in weather, road conditions and traffic (or unexpected border and national park closures) can throw drive times out by hours, so it's important to have an open mind and a degree of flexibility. If you’re the kind of traveller who prefers a strict, set schedule, you might be better suited to one of our destination-based shortbreak adventures. Check the itineraries on our website for an approximate breakdown of drive times for each trip.

How do game drives work?

Most Africa Overland tours are geared around wildlife viewing. We often stay a few days in each national park, giving us plenty of opportunity to encounter a wide variety of animals. On these days, you’ll usually do two game drives a day – one in the early morning when wildlife is most active, and one in the early afternoon after lunch. Game drives often last 2-4 hours.

While we do use open-roof 4x4 safari vehicles on occasion (like in Tanzania’s Ngorongoro Crater), most game drives are done in the Overland truck, which is specially built for safe wildlife viewing with big sliding windows. When we come across an animal, the driver will stop and you’ll be able to get out of your seat and move around the interior of the truck.

It’s important to know that an African safari is not a David Attenborough documentary. There’s no guarantee you’ll see every member of the ‘Big Five’, and we never veer off the marked trails to get a closer look at an animal. When we’re in their territory, wildlife comes to us. Whatever happens, you’re sure to experience some pretty mind-blowing stuff.

Am I expected to help out with tasks on the road?

On most Overland tours, you’re more than just a passenger – you’re part of a team. Your leader may split you into smaller groups and draw up a daily roster. You’ll then take it in turns to help with tasks such as cooking, shopping, washing up and cleaning the truck, although it’s not difficult work. Please come prepared to roll up your sleeves and pull your weight – it’s all part of the fun!

How do meals work?

When camping, breakfasts and most lunches and dinners are included. While at times you’ll be required to help out with basic cooking – chopping vegies, kneading dough – the cook overseas all meal preparations. Meals are tasty yet simple, made using local ingredients your crew will pick up along the way. Dinner might be pasta or a BBQ, but we also throw in some local specialties. Breakfasts often involve toast, spreads, eggs and tea/coffee, while lunch is usually a sandwich and some fruit; sometimes you’ll need to prepare a packed lunch if we’re going to be out on a game drive all day. If you have any dietary requirements please tell us at the time of booking, and remind your crew at the welcome meeting.

On drive days, we’ll usually make a stop at a market or shopping centre, giving you the chance to stock up on snacks and supplies. When heading into national parks for a few days we often take an esky with ice, so you can pick up some local beers or South African wine to enjoy by the campfire. We start each day with a supply of clean, filtered water for you to fill up your drink bottle. When staying in hotels, meals aren’t included, but your leader will recommend some affordable and delicious local restaurants.

How do the itineraries operate?

While we stick to the planned itineraries where we can, overland travel – especially in remote parts of Africa – is unpredictable. Closed roads, inclement weather or mechanical issues can affect the running of your trip. In those cases, there are plenty of other tried-and-true routes we can take. An open mind and sense of flexibility are key to enjoying your adventure.

Optional activities – such as bike rides, hot air ballooning and walking safaris – are dispersed throughout the itinerary. Please note that these are subject to availability, and that the prices listed are merely an indication. Ask your leader for more information.

How do we deal with money on the road?

One of the great things about an Overland tour is that many things are built into the cost of the trip – accommodation, transport, game drives, activities, community visits and most meals. You will, however, need your own financial supply for tipping, visas, personal shopping, drinks, laundry, meals when staying in hotels, optional activities and snacks for the road, so please factor this into your budget. We make regular stops at ATMs along the way so you don’t have to carry too much cash with you. Make sure you read your Essential Trip Information carefully so you know what’s included.

How do visas and border crossings work?

Many of the countries visited on our Africa Overland tours require visas for entry. Some are best obtained before you leave home, and others can be obtained en-route. Visas are the responsibility of the individual traveller, although we’re happy to help with any questions. Entry requirements can change at any time, so check out the relevant consular websites for up-to-date information specific to your nationality. Visas can take several weeks to process, so it’s best to apply as soon as you’ve booked your trip.

When crossing the border between countries, your leader will explain what you need to do and will walk and talk you through the whole process, so there’s no need to feel nervous. Along with your passport, you may also need to present proof of your Yellow Fever vaccination (your doctor or nurse should give you a small booklet after having the immunisation), so make sure you bring it with you. If you’re purchasing a visa at the border, you’ll often need cash (in the local currency or in USD). Your leader will be able to give you all this information on the ground so you’re well prepared.

What should I know about health?

To fully participate in an Africa Overland tour, you’ll need to have at least a basic level of fitness. Long travel days, hot and dusty conditions, bumpy roads – overland travel can be challenging on the body. You’ll need to be physically able to help with camp chores and to climb up and down the steps of the truck 8-10 times a day. To choose a trip that suits your fitness level, please look carefully at the physical rating on our website.

It’s also a good idea to check with your doctor to see if any pre-existing medical conditions will affect your ability to participate in the trip, as we won’t have immediate access to doctors or medical facilities in some of the more remote parts of Africa. You’ll also need certain vaccinations, so make an appointment to see a travel doctor as soon as you’ve booked your trip. See the Essential Trip Information for more information about health.

How do I pack for an Overland trip?

When overlanding, it’s best to pack as lightly as possible. Although you won’t have to carry your bag over long distances, you’ll need to help load and unload it from the truck. On most trucks, your main luggage will be stored in a personal locker at the back of the vehicle, but in some cases bags are stored together in one communal compartment. Either way, we strongly recommend a backpack or duffel bag instead of a hard-framed suitcase. Lockers usually measure 26 inches long, 18 inches wide and 10 inches high, so keep your bag within those dimensions, and make sure it weighs no more than 20 kilograms.

You’ll also need a daypack to keep your water bottle, camera and other personal items (this is stored at your feet or in the overhead shelf of the truck). You can stock up on basics – toilet paper, soap, batteries, a small lock for your locker – when we stop at supermarkets along the way.

The clothing and equipment required will depend on your destination and the time of year. Even in summer it can get cold at night, especially when camping, so layers are always a good idea. Bring comfortable, durable clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty (because they will get dirty!). We’ll supply the camping gear, including a basic ground mat, but you’ll need to bring your own sleeping bag and pillow. For more information about what to bring, check the Essential Trip Information.

While most Africa Overland tours are classified as Basix, for those less inclined to rough it, there’s a “glamping” option with our Comfort range of trips. On a Comfort trip, you’ll still need to be prepared for long, hot, bumpy drives in the truck, but you’ll rest your weary head in lodges and permanent tented camps instead of campsites.

Plus – you won’t be preparing your own meals, as they’re mostly included and provided by the lodges. Check out our Comfort trips in Africa below.

Combine your overland journey with another African adventure

Going on an Overland adventure might be a dream holiday, but there's plenty of other great things to see and do in Africa too. You can climb Mt Kilimanjaro , explore the lush rainforests of Madagascar or go on a Real Food Adventure through Morocco. Make your Overland adventure part of an even bigger Africa holiday on any of the trips below.

The ULTIMATE Guide to Overland Travel (2024)

It is absolutely without question that my best travel journeys to date have been overland.

Some were on motorbike, others were by way of a cardboard sign on the side of the road, and I have visions of future journeys that involve a big old school bus traversing the lands between Europe and Asia.

Overland travel is inspiring, and it is undoubtedly the best way to hit the road, especially as a backpacker looking to save money and dig deep into countries and cultures. While social media may have you thinking that you need to spend tens of thousands of dollars on a tricked out 4×4 to become an overlander, I’m here to completely dispel that myth.

Sure, van life and Land Rover Defenders are certainly a type of overlanding, but they’re not the end all be all.

Overland travel can be as simple as sticking out your thumb and hitchhiking, or using trains and shared taxis to get from one place to another. But regardless of the rig you choose, I guarantee you the experience of coasting along wide open plains at your own pace, sharing meals of yak yogurt with nomads, and getting to pitch your tent (or park your ride) just about anywhere will be absolutely worth it.

But still, I totally understand that it can all be intimidating. So let’s set the record straight with this ultimate guide to overland travel – where you’ll see that this is very much a “do as you like” adventure.

What is Overland Travel?

While you most likely already know the literal definition – traveling by land AKA avoiding flights – there’s a lot more to overland travel than just what’s in the name.

Overland travel – whether it be by foot, by bicycle, by rail, by van or whatever method you choose – is an art in and of itself. Closely intertwined with my other favorite form of budget backpacking – slow travel – overlanding allows you to get to know the places you visit far more deeply than a bunch of flights ever could.

a girl hitchhiking in a blue pickup truck while overland traveling in the mountains of pakistan

Overlanding is TRULY where the journey matters even more than even the destinations themselves. It’s what gave me some of the best moments of my life, something I know virtually all of my favorite adventurers would agree on when reflecting upon their own journeys.

And once you get started, I promise you you’ll only want to dig deeper and deeper into what it means to become an overlander…

Why YOU Should Overland

Before we REALLY get into this, I want to make something clear.

Overland travel doesn’t HAVE to be an odyssey. While it is for many travellers – like my journey from the UK to Papua New Guinea – you can travel overland without crossing a single international border.

The thing is, there are no rules to this type of travel. There’s no right or wrong way to become an overlander. You don’t need a tricked-out Land Rover Defender, you don’t need a van, you don’t need a bicycle. Hell, plenty of inspiring adventurers have embarked on incredible journeys with nothing but their backpack, a sign, and a stuck-up thumb.

So that, my friends, is one of the reasons WHY you should try overland travel: it’s truly for everyone and anyone.

man standing in front of a sunflower field next to a rainbow psychedelic colored rickshaw

But beyond that, in all my years on the road, it’s this type of travel that’s kept me addicted to life on the road. It’s absolutely not the most comfortable, but it will teach you the most about the world, and about yourself too.

Overland travel will push you to your limits, and really make you work for each and every view and experience you attain.

For some – like cyclists – that work may be physical. For others, it may be mental: such as moving past introverted tendencies to travel by hitchhiking or dealing with driving in brand-new countries with insane motorists.

It allows you to experience life on the ground to the fullest: minute by minute, mile by mile.

Ways to Travel Overland

This is no one-size-fits-all all method of travel, as there are so many ways to overland. I’ve even seen people do it completely by foot or on something as crazy as a unicycle.

But the following are the most common, and popular, ways to get around on the ground:

While I am not a cycling fan myself, those who have done it have nothing but incredible things to say about bikepacking – which is essentially overlanding with a bicycle strapped with a whole lot of stuff. Travelling by bicycle gives you the chance to slow down and see more than virtually any other way of overlanding.

couple cycling overland on a dirt road in tajikistan with fully loaded bikes

For one your speed (most cyclists don’t do more than 70km per day, depending on the terrain) will allow you to take in just about every village and turn – you’ll get to camp in places far off the tourist trail and meet an incredible lot of locals.

But moreover, cycling is as simple as it is cheap: you don’t need to worry about fuel or engine oil, it’s significantly easier to repair issues, and spare parts don’t tend to weigh that much. It’s also a hell of an accomplishment: unlike all the other forms of overland travel aside from walking, you’ll be physically putting in work every single day.

By Motorbike

As much as I love hitchhiking, traveling by motorbike truly ignites a passion that I have rarely found in other methods of exploring. The feeling of crisp mountain wind on my face as I coast through surreal scenery is one that just doesn’t get old, and it’s certainly something I’d like to try out for longer periods.

man sitting on a motorbike with a mountain behind him and a fully loaded backpack while traveling overland in pakistan

The one thing to keep in mind though is that start-up costs will not be cheap. Good bikes that can actually make it across continents are not cheap, and you’ll also need to buy extra tires, tons of fluids, and other parts that likely will not be available in the places you intend to ride.

But still: it’s worth it. You get the benefits of cycling without the intense struggle, and you’ll be able to maneuver in places where cars cannot. You’ll be able to carry a lot more than a bicycle could, and it will still be cheaper than any van or 4×4.

By Van/Your Own Vehicle

Perhaps the most OG form of overland travel is with your own car: whether it be a van, a 4×4 or an old ambulance, I’ve seen adventurous souls carving their own paths in virtually every type of rig you could imagine.

man sitting in an old white converted campervan while travelling overland

With the popularity of vanlife these days, I’m sure you’ve thought about or at least heard about this craze. I mean, the upsides are many. Your home is with you at all times, you can carry so much more stuff, and you can design your ride exactly as you like. For many, the process of building their house on wheels is just as special as the trip itself.

But there are negatives too: many countries require a carnet de passage that often requires a hefty deposit, repairs can be super expensive, and it’s a whole lot of responsibility. But if you’re determined to make it happen, this is undoubtedly the most comfortable and adventurous way to travel overland, as you can go just about anywhere and won’t be as limited by weather.

By Hitchhiking

My overland hitching journey from UK to Papua New Guinea may not have been completed, but it certainly brought me some incredible (and life-changing) travel memories that I’ll hold on to forever.

man making a cardboard sign to overland travel by hitchhiking

Exploring overland by way of the thumb is not for the faint of heart, or for those lacking patience. But it will bring you closer to strangers and teach you more about the world than any other type of travel. When you’re in a vehicle of any kind (even a bicycle) it somewhat separates you from locals: you’re self-sufficient, right?

But when you’re relying on the kindness of random folks to help you see the world, it opens up doors you didn’t even know were in sight. It leads to unexpected family dinners in local homes, to long chats alongside crackling fires, and to hours spent in random places you would have never visited otherwise. Hitchhiking will change you for the better if you let it, and all you need to get started is a smile, a sign and a stuck-up thumb.

Overland Travel Tips

My top travel tips for making your adventure as smooth as it can be…

1. Do your visa research

While most Westerners are privileged to be able to enter many countries without a visa, you can’t just roll up everywhere. Places like Pakistan, Vietnam, India, and Azerbaijan still require e-visas in advance, and China (often a pain for a lot of overlanders) has a set of very specific rules that usually requires applying for a sticker visa from your home country.

man riding a motorcycle in the karakoram mountains

Make sure you read up on every destination you plan to overland through to ensure you don’t find yourself caught out in no man’s land. Sometimes visa rules can change abruptly too, so it’s key to stay on top of them.

2. Bring a LOT of Spare Parts

I cannot stress this enough: if you’re travelling by way of ANY vehicle, it is absolutely essential that you have a good amount of spare parts in tow. Many of the best places to overland are NOT known for their equipment, which means you could potentially be caught out far, far away from civilization.

Spruce up your rig before heading out into super remote areas, and prepare for the unplanned. It’s far better to be a bit overloaded but have everything you need for a mishap than to travel light and become stranded.

3. Don’t forget the little things

You won’t realize how much you need a laundry bag, an eye mask or a good headlamp until you’re stuck in the middle of nowhere with none of the above to be found.

man starting a fire with sticks while overlanding

For little things like these, it’s definitely worth it to double up on your supply. You never know when something can get lost or break on the road.

4. Bring a first aid kit

Whether you’re walking, cycling, or traveling in a jacked-out 4×4, the need for a first aid kit remains. You never know when you might need it, but when that time comes, you’ll be incredibly happy you added it to your packing list.

While these honestly aren’t that cheap these days, it’s worth it to splurge on a large, well-stocked one that will actually last you a decent amount of time. If you have any favorite OTC medicines, I highly recommend hoarding them before you head out: pharmacies out in the wild leave much to be desired.

5. Go slow

The art of slow travel goes hand in hand with overlanding, but sometimes it can be easy to fixate on the destination rather than the journey.

girl in blue traditional dress sitting with two older women in a traditional house in southern pakistan

But unless you have a hard deadline to meet, take it easy out there. The whole point of overlanding is to experience the route, not just each individual destination.

Take some rest days where you do nothing but take it all in. Perhaps dive into some journaling, or park yourself at a nice lake or even a beach. The road has infinite pleasures to indulge in.

6. Download Maps in Advance

Even if you’re well prepared with a local SIM card, there will undoubtedly be places without service somewhere along your journey.

Unless you have a paper map like the kind I used to travel with back in the day, get all your necessary navigation downloaded and ready for use when you find yourself with a solid data or Wi-Fi connection.

7. Use Google Translate or Dictionaries

While English speakers are pretty privileged in that we can get by in most of the world, most does not mean everywhere. Take Central Asia for example where Russian rules – you’re going to need some assistance.

While learning a bit of the language in advance is certainly helpful, Google Translate’s offline abilities have truly saved me many times, and it’s a free app you should definitely download. The old-school dictionary method is useful too, especially if you plan to spend time in one place or region for a while.

Overland Travel Packing List

While your specific adventure packing list may look different depending on your method of overlanding, these are a few universal expedition items that anyone will need on the road.

Where to Start Overland Travel

You can certainly overland anywhere: from somewhere as simple your home state/province to any country that calls to you, but overall I’d say these are the best places for a truly epic overland travel journey.

Central Asia

The 5 Stans are some of the most adventurous places left on this planet, and they’re home to some of the most mesmerizing roads at that. As of 2023, it’s easy for Western passport holders to travel through all of them (save Turkmenistan), and each one (Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan) has something incredible to offer.

hiker standing on top of a hill with a huge white mountain in the background

Public transport is also expensive and lacking in most of these locales, which makes overlanding that much more valuable.

All four Stans are all interconnected, safe, and essentially a big old playground for overlanders. Do not underestimate the size of this region though: I’d recommend blocking out at least 3 months to get a real feel for what it has to offer.

South/Southeast Asia

man hitchhiking on top of a van in nepal

Ah, South and Southeast Asia . Home to some of my favourite countries in the world that have made the most indelible marks on my travels and my life.

India, Pakistan, Nepal and the infamous Banana Pancake trail (Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam) are perfect places to give overland exploring a try.

Public transport is widespread, and you’ll get a feel for what it’s like to cross borders. But of course, having your own vehicle will make things even more accessible and give you access to rural areas most do not get to see.

When I rode a rickshaw around India , I found myself incredibly off trail in places that had never even seen foreigners before.

Every year, thousands of Europeans head East to Asia in their own cycles, 4x4s or by way of hitchhiking. And while the journey from Europe to Asia is absolutely epic, you can also opt to travel within the continent too.

With so many countries to check out, it may be the easiest (though certainly not the cheapest) place in the world to overland. Border crossings are simple, and so many countries are interconnected, that it’s a breeze to spend months moving about.

For Brits, Americans and other non-EU nationals, it’s key to be aware of the 90-day visa rule within the European Union. Luckily, there are some fantastic countries out East that you can visit once your time is up.

Many van lifers take to the wide open roads of the United States , with 49 to choose from (discounting Hawaii) and the ability to head north into Canada, I can see why this massive country has become so popular in the world of overland adventuring.

The Perfect RV for a California Road Trip

Personally, the USA is not at the top of my bucket list for many reasons, but if you’re already living there and want to get a feel for overland travel, incredible landscapes and opportunities await. Just note that public transportation and hitchhiking are definitely not recommended, as the former barely exists and the latter is not safe .

So van lifers, this is your time to shine. I know many folks who have fixed up relatively cheap vans and set out to see virtually all the states in the Union. If you have limited time or money, definitely focus your energy on the West Coast . That’s where you’ll find all the national parks and the scenery that makes the country worth exploring.

Getting Insured BEFORE Hitting the Road

Regardless of where or how you plan to overland, you should definitely sort some solid travel insurance before leaving home.

ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing .

They offer month-to-month payments, no lock-in contracts, and require absolutely no itineraries: that’s the exact kind of insurance long-term travellers and digital nomads need.

Final Thoughts on Overland Travel

I hope I’ve now convinced you that your next trip should be an overland one. Ditching flights and committing to crossing borders and provinces on your own wheels (or by way of hitchhiking) will take your travels to entirely new heights.

You’ll have experiences that aren’t possible if you’re jetting about between places, and you’ll get to know each country and region like never before.

With so many ways to make it happen, from cycling to van life to even public buses, overland travel is something that is truly for everyone and anyone.

So what are you waiting for – get to planning and get the hell out there.

Will is a freaking trooper!!! I retained great advises from this articles like: Little things we dont think about, hoard your otc in advances, travel by train, buses, mini vans, bike, download your map is a great one when you out of wifi!! Visas if we go to china or india, google translate a must have and to talk t locals and meet people on the journey, enjoy the journey more than the destination, and to buy a kindle to read if no internet, i myself always have been wanted to explore asia and reading this give me ideas on how to get there cheaper and to see the best of all places.

African Overland Tours & Safaris

Traveling as part of an overland safari is something of a rite of passage for travelers to Africa. And it’s a fabulous introduction to the continent. It may not be for everyone. The low-budget feel, the close and relentless proximity with other travelers, and the sense of always being on the move doesn’t suit every traveler. But traveling in this way has many upsides. This includes the opportunity to see as much of Africa as you can while spending as little money as possible. Most likely, it’s the sort of epic trip that will stay with you for a lifetime. And it may perhaps even sow the seeds of a passion for the continent that will last just as long.

7 Questions About Overland Safari Tours

Anthony Ham

Answered by

Anthony ham.

overland tours

Why should I choose an overland safari?

“Overland safaris enable you to travel on a tight budget and for longer. You also get to see far more of the continent than would otherwise be possible. And you can share the experience with like-minded travelers. Africa can be an expensive place and not everyone’s budget extends to the costs of a dedicated safari package. Not every traveler wishes to restrict themselves to one destination; nor does everyone have limited time to allocate to their safari. If your idea of the perfect safari is to rest in one place and contemplate the horizon and those animals that move slowly across it, this won’t be for you. With an overland safari, you get a feel for the continent. Its wildlife and its myriad habitats, its people and its parks are unrivaled in scope, and a true reflection of the continent’s astonishing diversity. And if you like what you see in a particular place, you can always plan to come back.”

What are the popular routes?

“The classic trans-African journeys from the Cape to Cairo do still happen. However, most overland routes are less ambitious, coming together around Nairobi (for East Africa), and Cape Town or Johannesburg (for southern Africa). Flexibility is a byword for the overland safari industry, so you can often just join for the sections that interest you. The parks of central and southern Kenya and the country’s coast are a staple. So is the northern safari circuit and coast of Tanzania. In East Africa, Rwanda is often combined with central and southern Tanzania, while those heading north may take in Uganda and even Ethiopia. Another common route begins in Cape Town, takes in major South African parks such as Kruger, then traverses either Botswana or Namibia on its way north through Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi and/or Mozambique. Join up all the dots, as some itineraries do, and you’ve the makings of a grand African journey.”

Will I have any chores or duties?

“Yes, you do. On an overland safari everyone is expected to contribute. It usually works on a fair roster system, with chores such as cooking, washing up, setting up camp and packing it all away again later. Part of the appeal is the sense of everyone pulling together to make things work. So, you’re not paying any more for your safari than is absolutely necessary. Overland safaris generally travel with a very small staff, often just a guide and driver. That’s why everyone needs to pitch in and, in that sense, traveling in this way is no holiday. But in no time at all you’ll get into a rhythm and the sense of working together as part of a team has considerable appeal for many travelers.”

What type of vehicle should I expect?

“Overland safari vehicles are rather impressive beasts, designed in such a way that they’re as functional for major African highways as for deep-sand national park trails. The cabin is like a bus – a party bus on some trips, hence the fridge. And there’s a seating area and big windows high above the level of other vehicles. Massive tires are common to make sure that no trail will be too difficult. Large storage areas down below are for carrying camping and other equipment, as well as supplies for those areas where shopping in supermarkets is impossible. For wildlife viewing, some tours use the larger overland truck, others change to smaller, open-sided 4x4 vehicles, and some also use a combination of both.”

How much time is spent driving on an overland safari?

“The amount of time you spend on the road while on an overland tour will vary from one safari to the next. In some ways, you’re always on the road. Your vehicle is your means of transport to get from A to B, but also the safari vehicle and home base for each night’s camp. Most travelers’ memories of these trips are those of a road trip that rolls on and on across Africa. There will be days when you’re not driving at all (when you’re in towns like Nairobi or Arusha or some coastal idyll). Then there are other days when long hours in the vehicle are a necessity to make the whole trip work.”

How much will this safari cost?

“Prices vary but most overland safaris start at around US$45 per person per day. The key is finding out what’s included. Are you expected to bring your own camping equipment? Will you be expected to contribute to any costs (such as fuel, which is unlikely, or food supplies, which is expected) along the way? Are national park fees included? What happens if the truck isn’t full? Will you be expected to make up any shortfall? Remember also that many overland companies require a payment up front as well as a separate local payment. The local payment covers optional activities and many activities are actually considered optional (and therefore extra to the up-front payment). On one level, this allows you to pick and choose the activities in which you wish to participate, and ensures that you only pay for those that you choose. At the same time, the trip may be a lot more expensive than you realize if you are only quoted the up-front payment because many activities will not be included in this price. One final thing: Sometimes, discounts are possible if you take the journey in reverse. Drivers occasionally need to get the vehicle back for the next trip and value having some company on the way back.”

What should I consider when choosing an overland trip?

“Your choice will probably come down to a combination of dates that work for you and what it is you want to see. That’s assuming that you’ve already made the decision that this kind of traveling is for you. If wildlife is your main reason for traveling, quiz the operator about how much time you actually get to spend in the parks themselves. If local culture is a priority, check whether there’ll be dedicated time allocated for interacting with locals. Find out also whether there are any rest days built into the itinerary. Or whether you’ll have any free time to go off and explore on your own, where appropriate. Ask about the level of experience of your guide-to-be. Also query whether it is possible, and how much it costs, to leave halfway through your trip if you discover that it’s not for you.”

Reviews of oasis overland tours.

I went on the 56 day Coast to Coast Trip from Nairobi to Cape Town. I’ve written more detail on three sections. The Tour Leaders: Kim (Tour Leader) and Often (Driver) were AMAZING! These two went above and beyond in all aspects. Having done this route several times, Kim was a wealth of knowledge & very informative. It will be a huge loss to Oasis as this was her last trip as a tour leader. Often was always happy, smiling, cheerful & asked us how we were going every morning. Kim & Often volunteered to cook multiple meals for us (which is not part of their job) even if it meant them getting up at the crack of dawn to make sure we could all sleep in for longer. Often was incredibly handy and was always happy to help fix anything ranging from air mattresses to tent poles and sunglasses without expecting anything in return. The Route: I was happy with the route and felt that Oasis went at a steady pace. It wasn’t too rushed and for most places we were able to spend at least 2 nights and enjoy each place. My only complaints were the 5 hour immigration wait and $50USD visa fee for Mozambique when we spent less than 24 hours there (we drove through on the truck) and didn’t get to see much of the country. As Mozambique is notorious for the difficult land border crossing, it would be nice to spend at least 2 -3 nights there and make it worth the time & money. The other part that I really disliked was the unnecessary 14 hour overnight train ride to Vic Falls. It made no sense to me that I had to spend a sleepless night on a train when the truck was driving to Vic Falls anyway. The train ride was not at all enjoyable or scenic. The truck would have made it there a lot quicker & we could have had a restful night at camp. I enjoyed the majority of places we visited. Just bear in mind that doing an overland trip means everything is organised for you and most of the optional activities have a touristy element to them (especially the village tours). It makes it difficult to immerse yourself in true African culture when you’re on a tour like this. But doing an overland is the best way to see Africa. To try and travel on your own would be difficult and dangerous. The Truck: I’m not going to lie. Being one of the first overloading companies in Africa, the Oasis truck at times feels like it is from the Stone Age. The seating arrangement has its pros & cons and will vary depending on what you like. The storage space is massive! At times I found the sideways seating very handy when we spotted something and everyone got the opportunity to look out. On the other hand, I found it hard to see out the window sitting down (because you only see the people opposite you and their heads) and the only way to see properly is if you turn around and stand up or kneel on your seat. That can get tiring after a while. I prefer to sit facing forwards and get a good view out the window. The majority of companies these days use electric fridges. Unfortunately Oasis still has eskies where the passengers are responsible for buying ice. There were times where it was not possible to get ice, so sometimes we’d have food for cook groups that wasn’t properly refrigerated & warm drinks (which is not nice at the end of a 38 degree day!) Because of the truck layout the two eskies along with everyones backpacks etc. are scattered in the middle which makes it difficult for people to walk up and down the truck. Oasis doesn’t provide bedding, so make sure you bring a comfortable mattress. I enjoyed the fact Oasis has their passengers cook & prepare meals in groups, it made for a great atmosphere and the majority always pitched in to help out! Food was good for the most part and I didn't get sick for the whole trip! All in all, I loved my African overland with Oasis and I’d definitely travel with them again. Highly recommend!
What a trip of a lifetime! Strongly recommend traveling Africa with Oasis - it was a truly unforgettable experience! I did the 75 day Nairobi to Cape Town trip with on average about 13 people. I’m so glad I did the entire route as it really gave you the chance to experience the diversity of Africa. It felt a bit tiring towards the end but I have no regrets. If you did want a shorter trip I would recommend Nairobi to Nairobi or Nairobi to Vic Falls - although Namibia is AMAZING! The truck itself is great - the line of seats down both sides of the truck are perfect for ensuring you socialise with everyone and relationships don’t get too cliquey. Great way to play card/board games, sleep and admire the amazing views. I sometimes get car sickness and it didn’t happen at all on the truck! The truck had UK charging points, drink bottle holders and speakers to plug music in which were all very handy! My tour leaders were Often and Alexis. Often was the most amazing guide you can imagine! After 75 days on the trip I learnt that there was nothing he couldn’t do! He was so helpful with fixing anything that broke - air mattress, zips, tyres etc not to mention helping with a million other things - when he saw you struggling to fit your tent into its bag, making his famous garlic bread for your cook group etc. He cooked the most delicious food! He always ensured his beloved truck was in perfect working order. He was so open in sharing his life experiences and ensured we fell in love with Africa just as he had. Essentially, the trip would have been very different without him. Like Often, Alexis has been doing this route for years and it showed. She was very organised - with the days and border crossings always going smoothly. She was great at making sure if there was a specific African meal or something we wanted to see that wasn’t in the itinerary we would get to experience it! Alexis was also really helpful when it came to meal times. The food cooked by Alexis and Often was some of the tastiest meals I’ve ever had! So yummy! Being in a cook group can be a bit of a pain but it’s a great way to get to know everyone, learn new recipes, have some laughs and foster that family feeling. I spent a lot more money than I thought I would but you’re only in Africa once (hopefully more)! There are a lot more atms available than what the info Oasis provide states. You also don’t need as much USD as it implies as you do end up using local currencies in the countries you’re in. For me, I had a tonne of USD so I just exchanged it at the borders and rarely used an atm. In saying that, having too much USD actually worked out well as some people didn’t bring enough so I was able to help them out. There will be supermarket/grocery store stops about every 3 days too so there is no need to bring all your toiletries etc. The tents, dorms etc were absolutely fine! Tents are really quick to put up and down and are comfortable. There are upgrades available and a few of us always took a dorm room if it was less than $8. My number one tip is to buy a pillow at the start of the trip - you won’t regret it! Bring a spare set of headphones and flip flops because so many of us lost or broke both! Don’t worry about over packing - you get a lot of space to store your things. I’d also recommend bringing binoculars for all the game drives - we were always fighting over who got to use the two that we had! Do both of the village walks in Malawi and make sure you go down the slide in Jinja! Overall, it was just the most amazing trip. I have travelled quite a lot but never seen and experienced a place like Africa and I’ll always be so thankful for the memories and friends I now have.

While its roots can be traced back to Prescott, Ariz., and the first Overland Expo in 2009, the North American overland events landscape has drastically changed, especially in the last half-decade.

Besides the Overland Expo in Arizona, the early years also saw a handful of Overland Rally events, most backed by Overland International , sprout up across the country. These regional events helped introduce thousands to overland travel and were more community-driven than industry-focused.

While the same ethos exists between the smaller local events and massive Overland Expos today, there is a lot more of all of the above.

Overland Expos

Overland Expo has expanded to four events each year and become even more gear- and industry-focused. The largest event is still the original in Arizona, now called Overland Expo West. In 2024, it saw upward of 29,500 attendees and 415 vendors.

The Overland Expo event series is now on its third owner, currently Emerald Expositions (a trade-show event company). It continues to veer away from education and community and focus more and more on gear.

While hands-on demonstrations and moving vehicle training have been greatly reduced, vendor spots and advertising opportunities have been maximized.

Happy hours and parties have also greatly gone down, leaving just those who can pay the high fees for ID checks/security, licensed bartenders, and alcohol from approved vendors.

The Overland Expo events are still the place to get a first look at the latest and greatest gear on offer from the industry, as well as the latest vehicle builds. These events are also where you will most likely meet international travelers - even though it seems like fewer attend each year.

Overland Events

All of these events have their place in the industry, but the overland event space has become saturated. In the past 12 years in this industry, I have personally been to over 10 different overland-specific events and north of 34 total events. Event fatigue is real!

For me, overlanding is about self-reliant, vehicle-based adventure travel. While one can define that in various ways and mean very different things to different people, it all comes down to traveling by vehicle - where the travel itself is the goal, not the destination.

Overland events are great places to build community, get travel tips, learn how to use essential gear, find deals on gear, and generally have a great time with like-minded people.

However, in my opinion, attending overland events is not overlanding. Admittedly, my opinion might fall in the minority in today’s North American overland community. The number of people who ask overland companies for free products to support their “expedition” to overland events is laughable. Don’t be that person.

While I truly cherish many memories I have from these events, along with friendships made and skills learned, the experiences I like to share around a campfire or pint at the pub are those that I made traveling to new places and experiencing local cultures.

Attend some overland events, but remember that it’s likely more valuable to use your limited travel time and budget to actually get out and explore.

One final thing to note: I lived on the road, mostly in North America, for nearly 8 years and never ran out of cool places to see and interesting people to meet. You don’t have to travel all that far to enjoy the spirit of overland travel.

With that said, most of my most vivid memories are those created in far-off lands, with people who spoke a different language, and when I was uncomfortable in one way or another. Hopefully, I’ll see you at an overland event soon. Or, better yet, I’ll bump into you on the road less traveled.

Overlanding Is Car Camping: Fight Me

Is 'overlanding' just a made-up term, spawning brands and goods for the well-to-do that are really just car camping? Read more…

Overland Expo West 2024 Best in Show: Top Products

The best new overland products from Overland Expo West 2024 can be found right here, thanks to GearJunkie Motors Editor Bryon Dorr. Read more…

15 Best Overland Books: Inspiration, Lessons for Life on the Road

Looking for inspiration or a blueprint for making a life on the road happen?
