18 Best Things To Do in Aspen

Updated Jan. 11, 2023

If there's one thing Aspen's known for, it's skiing. This tiny mountain town is surrounded by four monumental ski areas: Aspen Mountain , Aspen Highlands , Buttermilk (a favorite among beginners) and the ever-popular Snowmass Ski Resort .

Maroon Bells Maroon Bells

Rising more than 14,000 feet, these twin peaks are a favorite spot for hikers and wildlife-watchers, boasting beautiful vistas and breathtaking scenery. In fact, Maroon Bells' jagged peaks and multicolored slopes make it one of the most photographed sites in North America. The surrounding area features numerous trails and campsites, granting you a variety of viewing points from which you can capture the perfect shot. It's also a popular spot on some of the best Colorado snowmobile tours . One of the standout hikes is the Maroon Bells Scenic Loop Trail. The easy 1.9-mile loop hike features incredible views and is exceptionally popular.

Whether you choose to head toward the summit or to lazily stroll around the beaver-laden Maroon Lake, this is sure to be one of the highlights of your Aspen trip. Recent travelers praise the uninterrupted beauty of this area, calling the Maroon Bells "stunning," "awe-inspiring" and "one of the loveliest places on earth." Some say it's the perfect place for a day of hiking and a picnic lunch. Past hikers recommended getting to the mountains early (before 7 a.m.) as the area gets crowded as the day progresses.

Independence Pass Independence Pass free

If there's one reason to rent a car in Aspen, it's to take the 20-mile drive through Independence Pass. This scenic road is one of the highest in North America, meandering along the Continental Divide at a whopping 12,095 feet above sea level. Get ready to feel like a daredevil as you navigate tight turns along towering cliffs and through thick forests. When you're ready to stretch your legs, a paved hiking trail (the Independence Pass Scenic Trail) leads to a sightseeing platform where far-reaching views of the Continental Divide are sure to make your jaw drop.

Those who cruised through Independence Pass say the scenery is truly breathtaking, adding that there are spots along the way to stop for a picnic and snap photos. Although travelers agree that a drive down Independence Pass is a must, they also advise that you proceed with caution because of the daunting nature of the narrow, winding road. (Some go as far to say if you are prone to carsickness or fear heights, this is not a trip for you.)

Snowmass Snowmass

Aspen's largest and most popular ski area is the ultimate destination for winter sports enthusiasts (and one of the top Colorado ski resorts ). Comprising 3,342 acres of skiable terrain, this massive complex features nearly 100 trails, 20 lifts and a charming village with a variety of shops and restaurants. Roughly half of the trails here are designed for intermediate-level skiers, but more advanced powder hounds will find plenty of challenging stretches of snow to try. Snowboarders should also note that Snowmass has one of the best snowboarding schools in the United States.

Previous visitors raved about the ski area and the variety of its terrain, noting that there are runs for all types of skiers and that the lift lines and trails were not terribly crowded. But when it comes to shopping and dining options, some travelers were disappointed by Snowmass Village.

Aspen Mountain Aspen Mountain

It's this mountain – first opened to skiers in 1947– that put Aspen on the map. And with spectacular summit views and slopes that will make even the most advanced skier's heart race, it's no wonder why Aspen Mountain remains a favorite spot for winter sports-lovers and is considered one of Colorado's top ski resorts . "Ajax," as it's sometimes called, features approximately 675 skiable acres with 64 miles of runs (complete with a variety of bumps and steeps); you can also make your own tracks along the Aspen Mountain Powder Tour's backcountry terrain. When you're ready to call it a day, you can satisfy your appetite at one of the nearby restaurants or bars.

When they compare it to Aspen's other ski areas, visitors and locals say that Aspen's veteran mountain is the best. However, novice skiers beware: Travelers warn this is not a mountain for beginners. They say it's made for intermediate to expert skiers and snowboarders, due to the challenging nature of most of the terrain. Skiers say they appreciate the variety of trails, from groomed blues to powdery black diamonds to expert-only double black diamonds.

T-Lazy-7 Ranch T-Lazy-7 Ranch

Whether you need a break from the slopes or a fun summer activity, T-Lazy-7 Ranch has you covered. Nestled in the Maroon Creek Valley just 2 miles south of Aspen Highlands , the ranch is considered the gateway to exploring the Maroon Bells . For more than 80 years, T-Lazy-7 Ranch has been owned and operated by the Deane family. Today, visitors to the ranch can explore the area on horseback or snowmobile, or participate in activities like fly-fishing. Visitors can also purchase provisions, such as eggs, honey and wagyu beef, from the on-site farm store.

There are a variety of horseback rides to choose from, ranging in length from one hour to a full day. If you're inexperienced with horses or looking for a leisurely ride, heed the advice of past visitors and consider the hourlong trek instead of the longer, 90-minute or half-day excursions. Reviewers said the trail terrain is rocky and may not be suitable for the faint of heart. Snowmobile tours are also well-reviewed (and among the best in Colorado ). Recent travelers noted that along with enjoying the views and learning how to operate a snowmobile, you will hear some local history from tour guides.

aspen colorado trip

Silver Queen Gondola Silver Queen Gondola

The Silver Queen Gondola travels 2.5 miles from the heart of Aspen to the 11,000-foot-high summit of Aspen Mountain. A sundeck and eatery greets visitors at the top of the mountain and makes for a great spot to relax, grab a drink or a bite to eat, and take photos of the surrounding landscape. If you're visiting in the summer months, there are plenty of opportunities to hike, dine and even enjoy some live music. In the winter, you can access more than 75 trails from the top of the gondola. If you're not much of a skier, you can also embark on snowshoe trails on Richmond Ridge with the Aspen Center for Environmental Studies , who offer daily tours.

Despite the promise of a fantastic view, some travelers say that gondola tickets are as steep as the incline. (You can save some coin by purchasing your tickets in advance.) Even though the prices are high, travelers agree that a ride on the Silver Queen Gondola is a must for visitors to Aspen, citing the fantastic views and the enjoyable journey up the mountain.

Crater Lake Trail Crater Lake Trail free

Crater Lake Trail is one of several spectacular hikes within Maroon Bells Scenic Area. The 3.5 mile out-and-back trail, which starts at the Maroon Lake parking area, is considered moderately challenging. Arrive around sunrise if you want a quiet experience, as this is one of the area’s most popular trails. The trail it is best hiked from June through October (the county will close the road in November based on snow conditions). Once the road is closed, visitors can walk, bike, cross-country ski or snowmobile from T-Lazy-7 Ranch.

Recent visitors crowed about the incredible views on Crater Lake Trail. Several noted the significant rocky portions, but all said the trek is worthwhile. Bring enough water, and be sure to seek the required permit and reservation early if you're accessing it by car.

aspen colorado trip

Buttermilk Buttermilk

With 21 miles of open, stress-free trails, Buttermilk – one of the top Colorado ski resorts – is the perfect spot to try your first run or to teach your kids to ski. According to visitors, all the beginner trails are groomed and the runs are wide, so there's plenty of room for skiers to maneuver. What's more, they say it never feels crowded. You can also sign up for private ski and snowboard lessons if you need some guidance. Recent visitors described the instructors as friendly, positive and helpful. Reviewers also praised the Cliffhouse restaurant at the top of the mountain, with some saying the views from the top are among the best in Colorado.

Beginner-friendly slopes aside, this mountain also offers trails for intermediate and expert skiers and is known for its 22-foot superpipe and X Games-inspired course. Buttermilk's expansive terrain parks include 470 skiable acres. Though there are no mountain operations at Buttermilk in the summer, visitors can still access it to make use of the hiking trails.

Aspen Highlands is known as the preferred ski area among Aspen locals (it's also one of the top Colorado ski resorts ). If you're looking for a challenge, this is the ski area for you: more than half of the trails here were carved with advanced and expert skiers in mind, with plenty of double black diamond runs offering stomach-dropping descents.

Skiers love the local feel of this mountain and say it's a bonus that it's rarely crowded. Travelers note the majority of terrain is definitely geared toward advanced skiers who know how to handle steep pitches and deep powder. When it comes to mealtime, previous visitors strongly recommend dining at Cloud Nine Alpine Bistro, which offers breathtaking views of the Maroon Bells .

Aspen Whitewater Rafting Aspen Whitewater Rafting

For summer adventure, it’s hard to beat a whitewater rafting trip on the Roaring Fork River. The river is aptly named, sporting intense rapids in the south (Class V) that gradually decrease down to Class II as the river flows north. The portion of the river nearest Aspen has some of the most intense rapids.

The river has many sections, including three that are especially popular with whitewater rafters. The wildest section of Roaring Fork is Slaughterhouse, which is rated Class IV to V and reserved for experienced rafters. For the adventurous traveler seeking scenic views, Woody Creek and Toothache offer mid-rated rapids (Class III to IV).  Cemetery is the mildest section, rated Class II to III. These rapids are more family-friendly and promise equally beautiful views.

Aspen Brewing Company Aspen Brewing Company

Aiming to bring the craft beer scene to Aspen, Aspen Brewing Company was founded in 2008 and has been brewing and serving up beers ever since. The brewery offers a wide variety of beer, ranging from blonde and red ales to stouts and pilsners to seasonal brews. With seating indoors and on an adjacent patio, Aspen Brewing Company's tap room encourages visitors to grab a pint and #DrinkInTheView.

Travelers praise this brewery, citing the friendly and entertaining staff members, the tasty brews and the relaxed atmosphere as prime reasons to return. Some recent visitors noted mediocre service, potentially due to staffing shortages.

Glenwood Springs Glenwood Springs free

While you'll have no trouble finding ways to fill your time in Aspen proper, you would be remiss if you visited the Roaring Fork Valley and didn't make a stop in Glenwood Springs – one of the top things to do in Colorado . Sitting about 40 miles northwest of Aspen along Route 82 – near the junction of Interstate 70 – Glenwood Springs offers just as many spots to hike as its more popular neighbor, not to mention fishing and whitewater rafting opportunities. The town is also home to an intricate collection of caverns that are worth exploring

But it's not caves and trails that earn Glenwood Springs a favorable reputation among travelers in-the-know – it's the town's legendary hot springs. Known as the Yampah Hot Springs by nomadic regional Native American tribes (such as the Ute), the Hot Springs Pool has been used by Indigenous Americans for centuries; and the bubbling pools have catered to such legendary clientele as President Theodore Roosevelt, the "unsinkable" Molly Brown and the notorious Al Capone. Recent swimmers mentioned that a visit to the pools can be pricey (adult rates range from $29 to $42, depending on the season). However, the admission fee allows you to stay and soak for as long as you'd like. Travelers say a soak in the hot springs is quite relaxing and rejuvenating after a few days of skiing; some previous travelers also recommended visiting during the evening for a less crowded experience.

Ashcroft Ghost Town Ashcroft Ghost Town

Ghosts may not be real, but ghost towns sure are. Ashcroft, a town about 10 miles south of Aspen, was settled in 1880 by silver prospectors. The town thundered into existence with a Miner's Protective Association, courthouse and street grid – all in two weeks. Three years later, the town was home to about 2,000 residents; bigger than Aspen, Ashcroft was a testament to its productive silver mines. Those deposits were soon depleted and rail links failed to materialize. By 1885, there were only 100 summer residents and the town was nearly bankrupt. Its fortunes rose and fell again in the early 20th century, and thanks to an interested owner, the town was protected and ecologically restored. Today, it is managed by the Aspen Historical Society.

Travelers who visit the site today can take self-guided tours of Ashcroft Ghost Town, which includes an old saloon, a hotel and a post office. Recent visitors enjoyed this short trip, with many noting that the scenic drive to it is as memorable as the visit. There are only a handful of buildings, but there are also nearby trails and scenic spots for photographs and picnics.

Aspen Center for Environmental Studies Aspen Center for Environmental Studies free

Sitting just north of Main Street on Hallam Lake, this research center and 25-acre wildlife sanctuary works to educate visitors about Aspen's natural surroundings while preserving local flora and fauna. While here, you can attend wildlife workshops, tag along on a winter snowshoe walk and even come face-to-face with America's favorite bird, the bald eagle. Borrow the center's binoculars and keep your eyes peeled for deer, elk, foxes, coyotes, bears, beavers and hawks. If you're visiting with children, consider signing them up for one of the kid-friendly arts and crafts classes or nature hikes. Little ones may also be fascinated by the indoor animal exhibits, which feature bearded dragons, salamanders and cockroaches, among other creatures.

Fellow nature lovers say that the Aspen Center for Environmental Studies is the place to go to get to know this town's wilder side, and many visitors are quick to praise the facility for its environmental protection efforts.

John Denver Sanctuary John Denver Sanctuary free

Anyone who's a fan of John Denver's music knows that the famous singer-songwriter was a big fan of Aspen; he immortalized the town's beauty and character in several of his songs, including his famous "Aspenglow." The town decided to pay tribute to its favorite musician (who died in 1997) with the John Denver Sanctuary, a memorial nestled near the Aspen Art Museum in Rio Grande Park along the Roaring Fork River. The memorial is composed of several stone slabs bearing the musician's name and some of his lyrics.

Past travelers strongly recommend a visit, even if you're not a diehard Denver fan, noting the area's beautiful flower garden and the impressive inscribed river boulders. Others said it's a great picnic spot.

Aspen Art Museum Aspen Art Museum free

There is a myriad of cultural attractions in Aspen, and for contemporary art buffs, the Aspen Art Museum is worth a visit. Instead of a permanent collection, the museum focuses on displaying exhibitions across its six galleries. Several exhibits run concurrently; sometimes relating to Colorado and its natural beauty. The Aspen Art Museum also boasts a rooftop cafe, which occasionally features free musical events, as well as regular workshops indoors.

Heed the advice from past travelers and check how many exhibitions are running before you go. Some recent visitors noted empty galleries and polarizing exhibits. However, many appreciated the museum’s distinctive architecture, which was designed by Shigeru Ban. Of particular note was the museum rooftop, which offers unobstructed views of Aspen Mountain .

Wheeler Opera House Wheeler Opera House

Constructed in 1889 by business tycoon Jerome Wheeler, this opera house has been a major source of entertainment in the Roaring Fork Valley for more than a century. Today, this performance venue remains an Aspen gem, featuring an eclectic blend of Victorian-era architectural styles, beautiful decor and a stunning electric chandelier (Aspen was the first town west of the Continental Divide to be wired for electricity).

The theater still hosts regular events ranging from concerts to film screenings to plays, and according to recent travelers, you shouldn't turn down the chance to catch a show here. Visitors love the small, intimate theater and say that it makes for a cozy atmosphere with great acoustics.

North Star Nature Preserve North Star Nature Preserve free

Located in the White River National Forest, North Start Nature Preserve is a 175-acre conservation area that encompasses the Roaring Fork River, wetlands and many species of wildlife. A series of walking trails mean visitors might encounter moose, birds or beavers. Those wishing to stand-up paddleboard, canoe or kayak can do so on the river. During the winter, there is Nordic skiing along the 1.62-mile North Star Loop trail.

Visitors say that the trails and river are lovely during the summer. One traveler noted that this is an excellent birding spot, and that diverse species are viewable. It is important to be aware of moose, and to maintain a safe distance if they are spotted; moose can react aggressively when threatened.

All-in-all Aspen Snowmass is an intermediate skier’s heaven, since the overwhelming majority of all four mountains, aka the “Power of Four” terrain is designated as intermediate terrain. Beginner skiers, especially first-timers, are discouraged from skiing at Aspen Mountain because there are no green trails.

On the flip side, expert skiing is what Aspen Mountain or "Ajax Mountain" and Aspen Highlands are known for. There’s no better place for top-to-bottom runs thanks to Ajax’s Silver Queen Gondola’s 3,267-foot vertical ascent. Aspen Mountain is famous for its long, steep mogul runs and challenging fall line. Those with a spirit of adventure can also get their kicks by hiking the 700 vertical feet to the top of the famed Aspen Highland Bowl. You’ll be rewarded at the Bowl’s summit with one of Aspen Snowmass’ best views and an unparalleled off-piste experience.

I cannot begin to explain the beauty that fills the valley this time of year.  The days were warm and the nights were cool, just the way I like it. The flowers and grass were blooming and truly made my experience that much better. I took advantage of biking on the Cozyline trail, which was so much fun I immediately wanted to ride it again. Great for intermediate riders. There was live music to be found, the restaurants all had their outdoor patios open, and the seasonal food, cocktails and beers were just awesome. I would highly recommend a summer vacation in the Aspen Snowmass area to someone looking for a town that is easy to navigate with stellar service no matter if its at your hotel or in a restaurant, and simply amazing access to nature!

Aspen, both a town and a ski resort! 4.1 Good 5.0 1.0 2.0 5.0 5.0 4.0 4.0 5.0 5.0 5.0 NR NR NR NR NR Aspen is graced with one of the finest ski Mountains around. Ajax, as the locals like to call Aspen Mountain, is not huge (673 acres) compared to the other 3 Aspen/Snowmass mountains operated in the Aspen area, but it is one of my favorites. There is no beginner terrain on the mountain; mostly it is intermediate, advanced and expert. I love its quirkiness; it has numerous homemade memorials and tributes that you can find hidden in the trees of the mountain created in honor of famous people such as John Denver and Elvis. The town of Aspen is right at the base of the mountain, and it is really special by any standard. There you will find incredible dining, unique and amazing shopping, and some of the finest lodging options anywhere. I find that the convenience of the free skier shuttles is tops. You can get to any of the 4 Aspen area ski mountains quickly and easily. There is always something great going on in the area, whether it is the X Games in late January, or the Aspen Music Festival and the Food and Wine Festival in the summer. Aspen truly has it all. Call me; I can help you put together a package customized for your needs and interests.
Great ski area with 4 mountains to choose to ski. Aspen is outstanding but on the expensive side. Grateful Deli has the best sandwiches.
Something for everyone Aspen/Snowmass has 4 great mountains. with different terrain to satisfy all skiers. Snowmass has great off the snow activities for younger kids, while Aspen satisfies the needs of teens and adults. The town has many options for non-skiers or injured skiers. There are fat biking and XC skiing trails. The free bus service makes car rental non-essential. The entire family loves Aspen/Snowmass.
Great Ski Town The skiing was tremendous. It snowed a foot or 2 while we were there. The lift lines were very manageable; particularly at Aspen Highlands.
Perfect spot for family stay Quiet, accessible and quick walking distance from downtown.
I have been skiing in Aspen since 1970 and have been there at least 35 times. We now come every year in the spring. This was another great trip. We normally ski on Ajax because we like groomed black runs.
Great trip and stay at Hotel Jerome Great customer service, very friendly atmosphere, all parts of Hotel Jerome were very nice and great location
Everything you could want in a ski vacation All aspects of our vacation were A-One. A little tough to get to compared to some other resorts but well worth it for us. $ mountains to choose from, free public transportation to all, so we didn't need a car. (Flew in to Aspen Airport, just a short ride from there to the Prospector.
Incredible in all aspects No complaints at all, everything was a 10. Great diversity in skiing, dining, shopping and sightseeing options. Don't be turned off by the Aspen "mystique", we find it very competitive price wise vis a vis places like Vail and Beaver Creek. and the people are very friendly and down to earth, can't do enough for you. Of course, you have the additional element of the "star watching'", e.g., how about Ringo Starr and Ralph Lauren and all the International ski racers in town/at the Limelight on this visit? Weather was great also. Once you go you'll have difficulty going somewhere else! At least we do, we've been going there for years.
Wonderful, magical town, with great mountains, hiking, and scenery. The variety and quality of the terrain and conditions is impressive -- although all of my non-Aspen experience has been in the Northeast :) The ski area staff, ski instructors, and shops are all so welcoming and friendly, which just contributes to the whole experience. This year I had all of my (non-on-slope) meals at the Little Nell because the food was so good and I saw no reason to leave the wonderfully relaxing environment, but I know from past experience that the food options are more than enough to keep one interested indefinitely.
Fun in the sun Skied at Aspen, Snowmass and Aspen Highlands. Snowmass is by far the biggest and for us, being from the east, we stuck to the wide groomers. Aspen and Aspen Highlands both had a smaller feel and the off piste skiing was easy to find and world class. If the snow is good, and you are an expert skier, the hike to the back bowl at Highlands is worth the effort.

THE COMPLETE ASPEN ITINERARY FOR AN OUTDOOR LOVER (A 4-DAY ITINERARY)

Car camping time! Chances are you have probably gone car camping at some point in your life or another.

Maybe it was in your younger days, but I am sure you have slept in your car at one point in time!

But, have you ever flown somewhere and car-camped? Well, this is always an option!

And this is what my husband and I did when we visited Aspen in August of 2020.

In this post, I am giving you a complete 4 day Aspen itinerary breakdown focused on the outdoors!

Aspen is located in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains. It is a small ski town known for its year-long outdoor adventures. It is a quaint little town also known for its upscale shopping and healthy living.

I will also be sharing some general car camping tips and bear safety tips!

So, let’s get started!

CAR CAMPING PREPARATION

Going into this trip, my husband and I knew we wanted to try to save some money as it was already expensive to fly to Aspen itself. So, we decided the best way to save money on this trip would be by car camping.

There were quite a few things to do in preparation for this trip. Actually, a lot more than I was expecting. So, I figured I would share my tips with you!

First off! Of course, we needed to make sure we got a car big enough for both of us to sleep in. We decided to get the ultimate adventure car!

A Jeep Wrangler!

This car was the same price as any other car that would allow us to sleep in it, so we figured why not get the super cool adventure car!

(And let’s just say I now am trying to convince my husband to buy us a Jeep Wrangler as our next car).

There are a few things you should be packing when preparing to go car camping.

Car camping guide

Since we were trying to make this trip as cost-effective as possible we also decided that we were going to cook our own meals for the most part.

So, of course that meant we had to bring our cooking gear too.

Here is a list of items that we packed in our suitcase specifically for car camping:

-Sleeping Bag

-Sleeping Pad

-1 extra blanket

-Blow up camping pillows

-Burner and Stove

-Bear canister for our food

Tip: If you are traveling with a second person and plan to car camp, try sharing a suitcase. It will save space in the car.

You are going to be more than likely “roughing it,” so there are a few extra things that I made sure to bring to help me feel clean!

-Eco Friendly Wet wipes to wipe my body off with

-A multipurpose quick dry towel

-Hand sanitizer that had aloe vera in it to keep my hands from feeling super dry

-Face wipes by Neutrogena

ASPEN CAR CAMPING TIPS

Car camping can be daunting at first, especially if you don’t know where to park and sleep safely at night.

I wrote a whole blog on how to properly and safely car camp with lots of tips!

If you are looking for remote and free car camping spots like we did there are a few options.

Some apps/websites that I love and are free to use are:

Freecampsites.net

Boondocking App

Any BLM land

A paid app would be the Dyrt. However, I find that a lot of these resources have overlapping results. They tend to show all the same places where you can legally sleep for free.

The nice thing about the Pro version of the Dyrt is that it has offline browsing.

Pro tip: Once you leave the small town of Aspen the service becomes minimal, so make sure to download your google map sleeping location while you have service!

Car camping not your thing but still want to visit Aspen? Then check out these best hotels and Airbnb in Aspen!

DAY 1: FLY INTO ASPEN, GONDOLA, & HOT SPRINGS

This is your first day in Aspen, so once you land you will need to pick up your rental car.

This was super simple. The Aspen airport is extremely tiny and the rental car parking lot is right across the street. I do recommend booking your car ahead of time though. There were only about 20 rental cars in the whole parking lot.

Gondola in Aspen, Colorado

Pro tip: If you plan to go anywhere outside of Aspen you will need a car. There is a free shuttle that does take you around town but will not get you to the more remote places.

If you are looking to save money then plan to do your grocery shopping after you land. All the restaurants in Aspen are quite expensive.

There is a City Market (grocery store) right in downtown Aspen and this is where we picked up all our groceries. We then headed over to their local outdoors gear store, called Ute Mountaineer, to grab gas for our stove and some bear spray as well as some freeze dried meals.

If you are looking for a cute place to eat and have coffee as soon as you land then check out The Local Coffee House .

Our coffee was now in hand and we were ready to enjoy the day. Unfortunately, the rain kind of took over, but we still decided to head up the Silver Queen Gondola .

There are two package options. We chose the cheaper of the two. It was $29/person.

It is a beautiful ride up. Once we reached the top we headed to the dining area and enjoyed some epic views. It was freezing out, so we got some chili at the top. This would also be a great place to enjoy a glass of wine.

Aspen Itinerary guide

We went on a small hike, but it didn’t last long as it was raining out and we were not appropriately dressed.

Some hikes you can do from the top of the Gondola :

  • Aspen Mountain Nature Trail: 1 mile RT
  • Richmond Ridge trail: 2.2 miles one way

You can purchase your ticket here ahead of time or there is a booth at the base of the Gondola to purchase tickets.

Once the rain cleared we headed to Penny Hot Springs .

This place is literally right off the right. Just type in Penny Hot Springs into google maps and it will direct you there. Make sure to do so while you have service, because you will lose service on your way there.

There is a dirt path down to the hot springs! Sit and soak in multiple different pools.

Penny Hot Springs in Aspen

After you enjoy your time at the top of the Gondal head back down and finish your night off by enjoying a beer and Pizza from the Aspen Brewing Company .

Aspen Brewing Company

If you are looking to car camp at night this is where we stayed.

***Note we drove up the mountain like it said to and there was no camping spot at the top, so we ended up driving down and parking at the base of the mountain to sleep.

RECAP OF DAY 1

  • Pick up your rental car
  • Do some grocery shopping
  • Ride up the Silver Queen Gondola
  • Do a hike once you get off the Gondola
  • Walk around downtown Aspen
  • Penny Hot Springs

Places to eat:

  • The Local Coffee House for Breakfast
  • Sundeck at the top of Aspen Gondola
  • Aspen Brewing Company for Pizza and Beers

DAY 2: SUNRISE AT MAROON BELLS & INDEPENDENCE PASS

We had planned to watch the sunrise for multiple days at Maroon Bells and we did, but we had a few hiccups along the way.

RAIN. BOO!

So, note that this day was planned to be spent at Maroon Bells, but went a little differently.

Maroon Bells now requires permits to see the iconic mountain and the permits sell out fast. So, make sure to book way in advance. You can book them here.

Insider’s tip! We booked a 60 hour overnight permit. This is the way to go. It allowed us the opportunity to come and go multiple times, which was great because of the rain.

Complete Aspen Itinerary

After we saw the sunrise at Maroon Bells it began to pour. So, we decided to head back into town.

We decided to enjoy a second breakfast at Poppycock’s. This is a very popular breakfast location in downtown Aspen. The food and service were both great!

We took it pretty easy this day because of the rain. Aka we watched TV and slept in the back of our car.

Butttt if it is not raining here are some hikes I was looking forward to doing:

  • American Lake
  • Old Crystal Mill
  • Crater Lake

Other fun day activities near Aspen:

  • Mountain bike
  • Alpine Coaster
  • Ski in the winter

The rain cleared around 3pm, so we actually were able to do a few more activities. We did the Grotto Trail and then drove up to the peak of Independence Pass for sunset.

Sunset in Aspen, Colorado

I highly recommend catching the sunset at the top of Independence Pass! It is gorgeous!

Insider tips: It is freezing at the top of the pass, so pack warm clothes, there are bathrooms at the top, and the road is windy and steep on the way up.

It rained so much that we were miserable and cold in the car, so we chose to book a hotel this night. We stayed at the Snowmass Mountain Chalet and Inn.

We got a great last minute deal on Priceline! Another great option to steal a last minute deal is HotelTonight.

DAY 3: MAROON BELLS HIKING

Ahhh back to the iconic Maroon Bells. This whole Aspen itinerary is built around the iconic Maroon Bells.

Maroon Bells is located just 10 miles west of Aspen. It takes about 30 minutes to get from downtown Aspen to the parking lot of Maroon Bells.

Visiting Aspen Colorado

Thankfully this day was sunny, so we woke up for sunrise again.

The iconic photo/screensaver shot of Maroon Bells is from the Fall when the leaves are yellow and the mountains are snow-capped.

But it is still absolutely stunning in the summer!

There is a popular backpacking route here called the Four Pass loop or you can just do day hikes.

Your complete guide to Maroon Bells

Popular day hikes that begin at Maroon Bells Lake:

  • Maroon Lake Scenic Trail
  • Maroon Creek Trail
  • Crater Lake Trail
  • Willow Lake Trail

Pro tip: Sunrise is the best time to see Maroon Bells.

-The sun rises and lites up the Maroon Bells mountain a beautiful pinkish/orange color

-It is quiet and peaceful

-Not too many people out

-Makes for the best photos

-It is very cold out (make some coffee ahead of time and bring it with you)

For sleeping purposes, again we got the 60 hour overnight permit and slept in the overnight parking lot in our car.

***Make sure to put your food in a bear canister even when sleeping in the car as you are in bear territory.

DAY 4: RELAX AND FLY HOME

Well this day turned out to be a little unexpected.

We woke up for sunrise at Maroon Bells Lake one more time and found the most perfect spot to take photos.

Our flight was supposed to leave at 1130am, but apparently they changed it to 920am so we missed it. Haha

Healthy eating in Aspen

So, we ended up having a relaxing day in downtown Aspen.

Non-tourist things to do in Aspen:

  • Do a workout in the Aspen Ruggerfest park
  • Do a drop in workout class at O2 Aspen
  • Grab a green smoothie and wrap from JUS Aspen
  • Hike the Smuggler Mountain Trailhead
  • Head to the Aspen recreation center for swimming and rock climbing
  • Go shopping!

ITEMS I DID NOT BRING ENOUGH OF:

The mornings were extremely cold and I did not pack appropriately and neither did my husband. I wish I brought more of the following:

-Thicker gloves

-Warmer jacket

-Warmer pants

-Warmer socks

-Deck of cards for the rainy days

FINAL THOUGHTS FROM YOUR OUTDOOR LOVING GIRL

I hope this detailed Aspen itinerary was helpful for you. I know I kind of gave you the background of how each day went for us personally, but I like to be thorough and tell you about our full experience.

When it comes to the great Colorado ski towns, Aspen is usually at the top of the list. It is not difficult to see why. This historic former mining town has blossomed into one of the most high-end, charming, visually stunning small towns in America, as well as one of the best places to visit in Colorado . And, it has some of the most lauded ski slopes on the planet .

Maroon Bells in autumn

As you can imagine, the best things to do in Aspen typically take place outside. This is true in winter and summer. Downtown Aspen at night

It does not get more vibrant than downtown Aspen. No matter the time of year, this Colorado Rocky hot spot is one of the best places to see and be seen in the entire state. Typically the town is home to only 7,000 residents, but that number changes dramatically during winter and summer, when the historic streets flood with adventurers and lovers of good food, shopping, and entertainment.

Downtown Aspen is where you'll find everything from designer labels to local boutiques. Chic hotels, restaurants, art galleries, bakeries, and more flank the brick sidewalks. Downtown Aspen is also where you will be able to catch the Silver Queen Gondola to ride up to the top of Ajax Peak. Stop at Ajax Tavern right at the entrance to the gondola to enjoy an al fresco lunch at the base of the mountain.

You'll also find the Aspen Center for Environmental Studies , which is where visitors and locals can go to learn about the environment of the area. Arrange for a custom tour, or simply drop by to learn about how we as travelers can be more environmentally responsible.

Aspen Mountain at dusk

For such a small Colorado town , Aspen packs a punch in the winter sports department, particularly skiing. That's because Aspen is within a short distance to not one, but four skiable mountains. Come winter time, you'll be sharing the lift line with some of the world's most enthusiastic and discerning skiers.

The Aspen Snowmass area has four ski areas, with more than 5,300 acres of mountain terrain to tackle. Aspen Mountain , also known as Ajax, is the most famous mountain and is the one you can access directly from downtown via the Silver Queen Gondola.

Then you've got the Aspen Highlands , home to the Highland Bowl. This basin has double black-diamond terrain that is only accessible via a hike. The remoteness of the bowl means that you'll be skiing with the world's best, and that this area is not meant for newbies.

For newbies, Buttermilk Mountain is the peak to visit, which is known for hosting the Winter X Games and also as one of the best mountains to sharpen your skills on. It has a kids' area known as Panda Peak, too.

Finally you have Snowmass , which alone has 3,300 acres and the highest vertical rise in the state at 4,400 feet.

Maroon Bells

If there is one iconic image of Aspen, it is probably of the Maroon Bells. You'll know it when you see it—a mirror-like lake that reflects the images of two snowcapped peaks named Maroon Peak and North Maroon Peak.

Maroon Bells is a landmark of Colorado, and Aspen in particular, just 10 miles from the small ski village up Maroon Creek Road. The two 14ers (what Colorado calls its peaks that crest 14,000 feet) are among the most beautiful peaks in the entire Rocky Mountains, and a must for any avid hiker or nature enthusiast visiting the White River National Forest.

The area has a few hiking options, depending on how much time you have. The Maroon Lake Scenic Trail is an easy one-mile loop , while the Crater Lake Trail is 3.6 miles and has the best views of the lake. Camping is popular in this part of Colorado, too, or you can opt for one of the many five-star resorts within Aspen or Snowmass.

Keep in mind that access to the Maroon Bells is restricted in the summer and fall. Reservations are required , and access is only available by bus.

Independence Pass

The main artery through Colorado is I-70. That is the road that will get you going where you need to go in the quickest amount of time. But if you're looking to take the scenic route, then you'll want to drive over Independence Pass. It's a historic mountain pass that leads straight into Aspen, and is one of the best drives you can take in Colorado.

Part of Colorado State Highway 82, Independence Pass leads up and over the Continental Divide over Leadville and down into Aspen. The summit peaks at more than 12,000 feet , and the entire route is 32 miles . The switchback route opens out to remarkable views over the mountains, through groves of aspen trees, and down over the Roaring Fork River.

Independence Pass is strewn with trailheads, as well, which run the gamut from easy to difficult, depending on what you feel like tackling. Campsites pepper Highway 82, as well, or you can return back to Aspen to stay in one of its many gorgeous boutique hotels.

John Denver Sanctuary

In the center of Aspen's downtown sits this green oasis that exists as a quiet break from the swirling activity around it. The John Denver Sanctuary , named for the American singer who penned Rocky Mountain High , is next to the Rio Grande Park, near the Roaring Fork River. It is a beloved location for tourists and residents to stop for a moment and breathe.

Within the park is the famous Song Garden, which highlights many of John Denver's most famous lyrics by having them carved into boulders and placed to represent the circle of life. In the middle of the circle is a Colorado blue spruce, meant to represent the spirit of the late folk singer.

Every October, the sanctuary hosts a celebration to pay tribute to the late artist. The event features musical performances, readings, festivities, and other ways to highlight the life and career of the artist who felt so at home in Aspen.

Address: 470 Rio Grande Pl, Aspen, Colorado

Maroon Lake Scenic Trail

You do not have to be a mountaineering champion to get the best views of the Maroon Bells or Maroon Lake. The Maroon Lake Scenic Trail is one of the best things to do in Aspen, and it is perfect for hikers of all levels.

The two-mile trail is an easy loop that starts off Maroon Creek Road and is one of the most incredible ways to experience this part of Colorado. The year-round trail is by far one of the best in Colorado.

The trail goes along the lake, following the creek that flows into it. From this trail, you will be able to access many of the other more challenging trails, like Crater Lake, East Maroon Trail, or the Willow Lake Trail.

Silver Queen Gondola

No matter the season, you can get the perfect lay of the land with a trip up the mountain in the Silver Queen Gondola. The peak of the mountain sits at about 11,000 feet, and whether skiing in the winter, hiking in the spring and summer, or peeping at the leaves in the fall, the gondola has spectacular views to carry you all the way.

The entire trip is 2.5 miles from the base to the top of the mountain. Once you reach the summit, the mountain opens up to outdoor dining , hiking trails , and, depending on the season, entertainment like live music . This is also the gateway to many of the hiking trails in the area.

Address: 611 E Durant Ave, Aspen, Colorado

T-Lazy-7 Ranch

Not far from the Maroon Bells, tucked in the Maroon Creek Valley, is the T-Lazy-7 Ranch —a veritable outdoor playground for all types of adventure activities. Whether it's snowmobiling in winter; horseback riding; fly fishing; or checking out a real-life, working ranch, T-Lazy-7 is a wonderful place to visit when visiting Aspen.

In existence for 80 years, the ranch raises beef, eggs, and honey. They also feature cabin rentals, as well as long-term housing if you're looking for a change of pace. But more than anything, the ranch is known for its activities.

Snowmobiling is one of the top draws to visit the ranch. They offer several types of snowmobile tour packages, some of which include lunch. No matter which trail you choose, you'll have gorgeous mountain scenery as you set off into the White River National Forest.

In the summer, the ranch becomes a home base for horseback riding and fly fishing.

Address: 3129 Maroon Creek Road, Aspen, Colorado

Wildflowers along Sunnyside Trail in Aspen

You can't mention winter skiing without talking about hiking. We already covered the Maroon Bells, but Aspen has so many other wonderful trails to explore. When the winter wonderland melts away, Aspen's forests and meadows unfold with lush greenery and brilliant wildflowers, all with the backdrop of the epic Colorado Rockies.

The Rio Grande Trail is one of the best hikes in Aspen, easily accessed from the post office downtown. The trail is a doozy at a whopping 42 miles ; it climbs up into the mountains and links Aspen with Glenwood Springs. The trail itself isn't particularly challenging, but its length can certainly make it a multi-day adventure with an ever-changing backdrop.

For something much, much shorter, consider the Grottos Trail , which is only a half-a-mile loop trail that has a beautiful, babbling waterfall and is easy for any skill level.

Ashcroft Ghost Town

A quick drive up Castle Creek Road will take travelers back in time from modern day Aspen to the historic, eerie Ashcroft Ghost Town . This historic silver mining town, founded in the 1880s, was a thriving mining community until it rapidly shut down and became abandoned, leaving the area frozen in time.

By 1883, Ashcroft had a population of 2,000 people, as well as many businesses and facilities. But the mines depleted as quickly as the town was built, and by 1885, only 100 summer residents remained.

Today visitors to Ashcroft can explore what was left behind, including a saloon and post office, the Bird House Hotel, and some other structures. Guided sightseeing tours are available, as are photographs and signs that tell the story of the rise and fall of historic Ashcroft.

Castle Creek Road near Aspen

Colorado has dozens of scenic drives and byways that crisscross over its epic peaks, valleys, and canyons. Castle Creek Road, also known as County Road 15, is one of them, and it transverse the gorgeous Elk Range not far from Aspen.

As mentioned, Castle Creek Road will be the road you take from Aspen to Ashcroft, so while you're headed to the Ghost Town, you can cross another item off your list and enjoy the drive. The road has many opportunities to pull over and drink in the views.

The seasonal road is only open from mid-May until the end of October, but along the way, you'll find numerous opportunities to stop and hike. If your car is up for the challenge, an unpaved road branches off and zigzags to the top of Taylor Peak, which towers nearly 12,000 feet above sea level.

The entire drive is 13 miles and features a few steep grades and hairpin turns. It is one of the most beautiful drives in Colorado.

Aspen is a small town, and most of the hotels listed here are within walking distance of downtown and Aspen Mountain. Most Aspen lodging falls into the luxury range; it's one of the most expensive destinations in Colorado.

Luxury Hotels:

  • The Little Nell is located at the base of Aspen Mountain and offers ski-in, ski-out access. It is Aspen's only true 5-star hotel and attracts a VIP clientele that includes celebrities. Expect five-star service and modern elegant rooms and suites. The hotel is extremely dog-friendly.
  • The historic Hotel Jerome has been Aspen's social hub since 1889. Aspen's oldest hotel, it is another legendary luxury property with a prime location on Main Street downtown. Hotel Jerome is known for its après ski scene. It also has an excellent restaurant.
  • At the base of Aspen Mountain, The St. Regis Aspen Residence Club is another 5-star property with exceptional service. Expect butler service and rooms and suites with modern Western style. The on-site Remède Spa has won awards.

Mid-Range Hotels :

  • The Limelight Hotel is slightly more affordable than the above hotels but still very luxurious—almost anywhere else it would not be considered mid-range. This trendy hotel has a central downtown locale and is just a 5-minute walk (or free shuttle ride) from Aspen Mountain's ski lifts. The lobby lounge serves wood-fired pizzas and other light fare and has live music most nights.
  • One of Aspen's only true mid-range hotels, The Inn at Aspen is outside of city limits at the base of Buttermilk Mountain. It has ski-in, ski-out access to this beginner's area. There is a free shuttle service to the other resorts. The 121 rooms are comfortable and nicely appointed. There is an outdoor swimming pool and hot tub as well as a fire pit surrounded by Adirondack chairs.

Budget Hotels :

  • Aspen's most affordable lodging option is the St. Moritz Lodge & Condominiums . This European-style lodge has a location on the edge of downtown and offers a range of accommodation. The cheapest rooms have shared baths. There are also standard lodge rooms with kitchenettes and condos with one or two bedrooms.
  • The family-owned Tyrolean Inn is another budget choice in Aspen. This 2-star hotel has relatively spacious rooms with two queens and one twin bed. The free ski shuttle stops right out front.

Where to Eat, Stay, and Play in Aspen, Colorado

By Sarah Kuta

Cable car moving up over forested snow covered mountains Aspen Colorado USA

Some 200 miles west of Denver , Aspen, Colorado, is nestled in the Roaring Fork Valley of Colorado’s Rocky Mountains. It’s a peaceful retreat in every season, alive with colorful wildflowers in the summer and golden-yellow aspen leaves in the fall. But in the winter , this mountain town feels especially magical—fresh snow glitters on the trees, and downtown comes alive with twinkling strings of lights.

With four ski resorts and expansive terrain to explore on snowshoes or cross-country skis, Aspen is a major winter outdoor recreation hub. Plus, after you come in from the cold, you can warm up at the chicest après-ski scene in the country and immerse yourself in the city’s sophisticated arts and culture. At 8,000 feet in elevation, Aspen sees chilly temperatures in the winter, but thanks to Colorado’s abundant sunshine and dry climate (and the right jacket and gear ), you’ll hardly notice. Here’s how to plan a weekend trip filled with the best things to do in Aspen.

Getting there

Fly into the Aspen/Pitkin County Airport , which offers nonstop commercial flights this winter from Austin, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Atlanta, Houston, San Francisco, and Denver, plus hundreds of connecting flights. There are also many charter and private jet options for traveling to Aspen, including new semi-private flights from Los Angeles aboard Aero .

Aspen’s leaders and residents are incredibly passionate about limiting greenhouse gas emissions, so once you arrive, consider getting around via the Roaring Fork Transportation Authority ’s robust bus system. Many of the routes are completely free, and the maps and schedules are intuitive and easy to navigate, even for first-time visitors. Because the city is also highly walkable, and most hotels have free shuttles, skipping the rental car is totally doable. In the spring, summer, and fall, the nonprofit WE-cycle bike-share network offers free, unlimited, 30-minute rides on both pedal and electric bikes.

To explore more of the Centennial State, fly into Denver International Airport , then rent a car and head west on I-70. On the scenic, four-hour drive you’ll pass by charming mountain towns like Idaho Springs, Silverthorne, Frisco, Glenwood Springs, and Carbondale. (Fair warning, if you’re traveling during the winter: Prepare for the possibility of snow and ice, as well as traffic backups and road closures—storms and general ski traffic can bog down I-70.) There are also daily passenger shuttle options from Denver International Airport to Aspen.

Aspen Colorado Travel Guide The Best Things to Do and Places to Ski

Things to do in Aspen, Colorado

Travelers head to Aspen during the warmer months for patio dining, world-renowned concerts and festivals, and warm-weather activities like hiking, mountain biking, and fly fishing. But from December to early April, Aspen is all about the downhill skiing and snowboarding at four Aspen Skiing Company resorts— Aspen Mountain , Buttermilk , Aspen Highlands , and Snowmass —which have varying terrain types and difficulty levels (and appear on our Readers' Choice Awards list for the best North American ski resorts 2022 ).

You can ski right into downtown from Aspen Mountain (known locally as “Ajax”) which has 64 miles and 3,267 vertical feet of terrain. Sprawling Snowmass offers tons of family-friendly runs and amenities. Aspen Highlands is known for its steep, rugged terrain (and is especially popular among locals), while Buttermilk has a world-class terrain park. You can easily hop around and try all four mountains, as they're all accessible via the same lift ticket. Aspen Snowmass' four mountains are also on several multi-mountain season passes , including Ikon and Mountain Collection. If you’re new to skiing or snowboarding (or you just need a refresher), enroll in a group or private lesson—Aspen’s instructors and guides are incredibly knowledgeable and experienced.

Beyond downhill skiing, Aspen offers a wide variety of other winter outdoor activities, like snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, up-hilling, birding, hiking, and ice fishing, to name a few. There are experienced guides and instructors who can show you the ropes, too, including Sun Dog Athletics , Blazing Adventures , and Ashcroft Touring and Adventures .

More experienced mountaineers can take advantage of the region’s backcountry skiing areas (out-of-bounds, ungroomed, and unmonitored terrain), but be sure to go through avalanche training or tap a guide to be safe— Aspen Alpine Guides , for example, offers regular avalanche courses and guided backcountry excursions. For a backcountry-esque adventure that stays in-bounds, try hiking up to the 12,392-foot summit of Highland Bowl , then skiing the double-black-diamond terrain down—you’ll want to be in peak physical shape and be an experienced skier for this one.

To learn more about Aspen’s unique high-alpine plants and animals, book a guided tour with a naturalist from the Aspen Center for Environmental Studies (ACES) or spend a few quiet, reflective moments in nature at the organization’s 25-acre nature preserve and environmental learning center, Hallam Lake. Bring your binoculars; Hallam Lake is a great place to observe colorful waterfowl and other birds.

Aspen is also a high-end shopping hub, with fashion brands like Prada , Gucci , and Ralph Lauren lining downtown’s pedestrian-friendly brick streets. To round out your shopping trip, browse for unexpected treasures—like a vintage Louis Vuitton suitcase or a pair of World War II binoculars—at Daniel’s Antiques , then head over to Explore Booksellers to grab your latest read. And those chic cowboy hats you see everyone wearing around town? Those come from Kemo Sabe , a downtown spot where you can customize a trendy Stetson and pick up other Western accessories.

Immerse yourself in Aspen’s rich arts and culture scene by strolling through the free Aspen Art Museum , which puts on rotating contemporary art exhibitions. With an exterior finish reminiscent of a woven picnic basket, the 33,000-square-foot, three-story museum building—designed by Japanese architect Shigeru Ban—is a work of art in its own right. We recommend timing your visit to align with lunch so you can grab a bite at the bright, airy rooftop cafe.

The stunning 133-year-old Wheeler Opera House —an elaborate, lovingly maintained Victorian-era gem—has a full calendar of comedy shows, dance performances, festivals, concerts, and other events. The Wheeler is also part of the new Colorado Historic Opera Houses Circuit , an initiative to drum up support for the five remaining historic opera houses located around the Centennial State, so even if you don’t have time to see a show, it’s worth stopping by just to appreciate its grande 1889 architecture. The Aspen Historical Society also offers guided tours of the iconic building, which has maintained its status as the community’s artistic hub for decades.

Carve out time to visit the newly opened Resnick Center for Herbert Bayer Studies , which opened at the Aspen Institute earlier this year. The new, 7,000-square-foot museum contemplates the life and legacy of Herbert Bayer, an Austrian-American polymath who studied and taught at the famed Bauhaus art school that operated in Germany from 1919 to 1933. Bayer lived in Aspen from 1946 to 1974 and helped shape the then-burgeoning city’s overall look, feel, and post-World War II growth. Notably, he designed the 40-acre grounds of the institute—which hosts an array of important annual events, including the Aspen Ideas Festival and the longstanding Aspen Music Festival and School —and he developed the Aspen Skiing Company’s original, instantly recognizable leaf-shaped logo. The center offers guided tours, as well as rotating exhibitions; the current show, Herbert Bayer: An Introduction , explores Bayer’s work as a painter. You can also stay on-site at Aspen Meadows Resort , which offers an up-close view of Bayer’s distinctive style and legacy. The hotel is undertaking a multi-million-dollar renovation, starting with its 98 spacious guest suites.

If your trip allows, try to catch a show at Belly Up Aspen , a small but renowned live music venue that’s hosted well-known musicians ranging from Lil Wayne to Jimmy Buffett. It’s also worth it to make the quick drive or bus ride over to Anderson Ranch Arts Center , founded in Snowmass 1966, to explore its outdoor sculpture exhibition and attend a variety of lectures and workshops.

Where to eat

Taste the flavors of the Roaring Fork Valley with a dinner of the senses at Bosq , where chef and co-owner Barclay Dodge creates dishes and cocktails from local ingredients he forages himself in the surrounding wilderness. Bosq’s seasonal, multi-course tasting menus feature Rocky Mountain-inspired fare like Colorado lamb with grilled escarole, grilled plums, and horseradish. There are just 35 seats at Bosq, which is located downtown across from the popular Wagner Park, so try to make a reservation as early in your travel plans as possible.

Duck into Hooch for an exquisite hand-crafted cocktail and speakeasy vibes. Linger over a bubbling vat of cheese fondue and perfectly prepared crepes at French Alpine Bistro . For lunch, stop by White House Tavern and order the locals’ favorite crispy chicken sandwich, made with Swiss cheese, tomato, and spicy coleslaw. Other upscale spots to bookmark include Matsuhisa for sushi, Ellina for contemporary Italian cuisine, and Bear Den Aspen for brunch. Before you leave, stock up on artisanal cheeses, cured meats, and pickles from Meat and Cheese , a hybrid restaurant and specialty food store.

While skiing or snowboarding at Aspen Mountain, refuel with a stack of pillowy pancakes at Bonnie’s or a cone of crispy truffle fries at Ajax Tavern (which also offers some of the best people-watching in town). Spending the day at Snowmass means treating yourself to a long lunch at Sam’s , an upscale Italian restaurant with awe-inspiring mountain views from nearly every seat. And if you don’t mind getting sprayed with a little champagne, end your day at Aspen Highlands with lunch and apres at Cloud Nine , the lively ski-in, ski-out cabin where travelers and locals alike love to let loose.

Strap on a pair of snowshoes or cross-country skis and make your way across Ashcroft Ski Touring’s snowy trails to Pine Creek Cookhouse , a log cabin-style restaurant in the scenic Castle Creek Valley with unobstructed views of the towering Elk Mountains. Offering wild game, fresh seafood, and other alpine-inspired dishes for lunch and dinner, it's is one of the most beloved eateries in town—meaning reservations are a must. You can also ride in a horse-drawn sleigh, take a private cross-country ski lesson, or tap a guide to explore Ashcroft, which is home to the remains of an 1880s ghost town.

A guest room at Hotel Jerome

Felix Roasting Co. inside Hotel Jerome is the design-forward cafe’s first location outside of New York City

Where to stay

An Aspen landmark since 1889, the 133-year-old Hotel Jerome opened amid the city’s silver-mining boom as a model of class and elegance, offering guests tantalizing new amenities like electric lighting and indoor plumbing. The stately, three-story brick building survived Aspen's subsequent silver bust and the Great Depression, then tracked the city's rise to become an elite mountain destination among intellectuals, skiers, movie stars, and artists. Centrally located in downtown Aspen, the historic hotel—now part of the California-based‌ ‌Auberge‌ ‌Resorts‌ ‌Collection—offers an ideal blend of modern luxury and historic Old West charm in its 99 guest rooms, complete with mounted wooden deer heads and burnished leather bed frames.

After soaking up the mountain views from Hotel Jerome’s heated outdoor pool and hot tub, head to the J-Bar—where gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson hung out while campaigning (unsuccessfully) to become Pitkin County’s sheriff in 1970—for an “Aspen Crud,” a boozy, Prohibition-era milkshake made‌ ‌with‌ bourbon and vanilla‌ ‌ice‌ ‌cream‌. When the sun sets behind the mountains, wind down while sharing stories of the day’s adventures over an old fashioned or a glass of red in the sultry, lobby-level bar, The Living Room. Hotel Jerome is also home to Felix Roasting Co.—the company’s first location outside of New York City—as well as Prospect, an innovative New American bistro, and Bad Harriet, a sexy, subterranean, speakeasy-style watering hole located next door in the basement of the historic Aspen Times building.

For a more intimate stay, check into Aspen Street Lodge , an exclusive luxury home rental that opened in December 2020. Nestled on a quiet, tree-lined street just steps from downtown, the high-end lodge has nine guest rooms and a two-bedroom penthouse suite available for total buyouts. Gaze at Aspen Mountain from the heated rooftop pool and hot tub, then retreat indoors for a cozy movie night in the plush media room. With room for up to 26 adults and six children, the expansive property also has a dedicated experiences manager who can arrange just about any adventure your travel crew can dream up—from a refined spirits tasting to a private painting lesson taught by Aspen artist Kelly Peters to a thrilling paragliding adventure.

Families feel right at home at the recently refreshed Limelight Hotel Aspen , which has a casual yet sophisticated contemporary vibe across its 126 rooms and suites, two rooftop terraces, and inviting lounge. Luxury New York design firm Stonehill Taylor led the hotel’s top-to-bottom renovation last year, which reinvigorated the Limelight’s status as Aspen’s cozy community living room. Designers used pops of bright color, earthy natural materials like walnut and white oak, metallic accents, and plush fabrics to create a warm, homey atmosphere with a touch of elegance. For groups with skiers and snowboarders of varying ability levels, sister property Limelight Hotel Snowmass —which opened at the base of Snowmass’s slopes in late 2018—is an ideal home base for exploring the friendly ski area’s wide blue groomers and dispersed trees.

For ski-in, ski-out access to Aspen Mountain, book into one of the 92 slopeside rooms at The Little Nel l, which has been a luxurious Aspen icon since 1989. And even if you don’t stay, at least stop by for a glass of wine at the new Wine Bar at The Nell or a steaming mug of their popular hot chocolate, made with rich Dutch cocoa. Everything on the menu at The Nell’s on-site restaurant, Element 47, is also delicious.

8 Best Places to Retire in Colorado for Low Property Taxes, Beautiful Mountain Scenery, and Outdoor Adventures

Local experts share some of the best places to retire in Colorado, from small towns to big cities.

aspen colorado trip

PeterPhoto/Getty Images

Colorado’s natural beauty, fresh air, and abundant outdoor activities make it a popular vacation destination and place to live . Specifically, active retirees who like to ski, hike, and fish, as well as enjoy crisp mountain air, a four-season climate, and convenient access to both urban and wilderness landscapes, might consider Colorado as their home.

When it comes to finances, Colorado is considered fairly tax-friendly for retirees, according to SmartAsset . The system provides for a deduction of $24,000 per year on all retirement income for anyone 65 years and older. For retirees between the ages of 55 and 64, the deduction is $20,000 a year. Married couples can each claim the deduction. Social Security is taxable, and these deductions apply to Social Security income. Property taxes are some of the lowest in the country, too, with an average of about 0.48 percent.

Retirees who have vacationed in Colorado over the years can look to the future in some of their favorite Centennial State locations. We’ve put together a list of best places to retire in Colorado with input from local residents and frequent travelers, as well as my own personal experience.

Fort Collins

Christopher Larson/Travel + Leisure

Located in the northern Colorado foothills of the Rocky Mountains, about 60 miles north of Denver International Airport, Fort Collins is a midsized city in Larimer County. Jala Curtis, business marketing and communications program supervisor at the Fort Collins Downtown Development Authority , tells Travel + Leisure , “Fort Collins is an ideal destination that seamlessly combines outdoor adventure with urban charm. Picture waking up to the breathtaking Rocky Mountains in the background, and then heading out for a morning hike or bike ride in the beautiful foothills. Fort Collins enjoys all four seasons, offering a variety of weather throughout the year.”

Curtis adds, “The city fosters a strong sense of community, with plenty of opportunities to connect with others through clubs, events, and senior centers like the Fort Collins Senior Center, which has social activities, fitness programs, and even ski trips. The city boasts a lively arts scene with museums, theaters, and a symphony orchestra. You can also enjoy the youthful energy brought on by Colorado State University.”

According to Curtis, downtown Fort Collins, a walkable area filled with public art, inspired Disney’s Main Street, U.S.A. More than 100 restaurants, shops, galleries, and boutiques blend past and present in the historic district.

Niche.com calls Fort Collins “one of the best places to live in Colorado,” noting the median home value is $497,400. The site also calls on the parks, restaurants, coffee shops, and highly rated public schools.

This year-round resort area, renowned for its downhill skiing, boasts cultural activities, annual festivals, excellent restaurants, and gorgeous scenery. Residents don’t have to be skiers to enjoy the outdoors in Aspen , where hiking trails, parks, golf, and a walkable downtown provide ample ways to soak in the fresh mountain air.

“Providing a completely frictionless lifestyle for an active and inspiring retirement, Aspen offers world-class skiing and hiking, intellectual pursuits at the Aspen Institute, performances at the Aspen Music Festival and DanceAspen, dining at a Michelin-starred restaurant, and unwinding with spa treatments — my favorite being The Little Nell’s new ski-in/ski-out spa — all without ever needing a car,” Aspen resident Erin McGuire of EMG Aspen Realty tells T+L. McGuire, who specializes in ownership sales for the Residences at The Little Nell, adds, “Owners at the Residences at The Little Nell often remark that their kids and grandkids eagerly look forward to family gatherings in Aspen.”

Quality health care is available at Aspen Valley Hospital, as well as through small clinics offering everything from orthopedic to dentistry to women’s health services. Aspen also has a free bus system in town and to the neighboring town of Snowmass.

Hartsel, Park County

Randy Poll / 500px/Getty Images

Located at 8,864 feet above sea level, Hartsel is referred to as the “Heart of Colorado.” With less than 1,000 residents, this part of Colorado is ideal for hardy, independent retirees who enjoy outdoor recreation, cold winters, fishing, hiking, and solitude. My friend, Gina, widowed at 59, moved from northwest Florida to Hartsel in 2020, leaving behind a waterfront home, and, in her words, “hurricanes, heat, and humidity” as well.

In Hartsel, Gina realized her dream of having a horse and ranch lifestyle. “Over two years, my realtor and I drove a thousand miles all over Colorado, on dirt roads and flat plains, before finding my place in the center of the state bordering the South Park National Heritage Area. My property backs up to over a million acres of the San Isabel National Forest, and I can ride out my back gate and enjoy unlimited places to ride my horse or an ATV,” she says.

She adds, “Wildlife roaming on my land and in the area include elk, deer, coyotes, badgers, bears, bobcats, mountain lions, foxes, and bighorn sheep. I have a half-hour drive to the town of Buena Vista for groceries and other services, and it’s about two hours to Denver. This is a rugged life, and you’d better be tough and love the outdoors.” If this sounds like an appealing retirement lifestyle, then central Colorado may be for you.

“The Mile High City and Colorado’s capital, Denver features a walkable downtown with museums, a performing arts center , restaurants, parks, a historic district, a pedestrian mall, and a baseball field. Convenient and inexpensive rail service between Union Station and Denver International Airport makes travel easy. Within the city, a variety of neighborhoods offer diverse places to live and visit.

Surrounded by the Rocky Mountains, and a mile above sea level, Denver offers mild, dry, and sunny weather. I’ve visited Denver many times and experienced both warm days in summer and cold days with a bit of snow in winter. During my most recent trip, I attended a Major League Baseball game in the downtown stadium and a concert at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre, near Denver, a beautiful place to visit even when there’s no event scheduled.

Retirees who appreciate all that downtown offers, along with a more suburban lifestyle, have many options in the Denver area. I’ve spent time with friends in Broomfield, about 20 miles from downtown. Niche.com lists and rates a number of Denver suburbs with excellent livability scores. The cost of living, according to Numbeo , is about 23 percent lower than in New York, and rents are about 48 percent lower.

Located in the foothills of the Rockies, about 30 minutes from Denver, Golden is among the best places to retire in Colorado, according to SmartAsset . Per their data, access to health care is excellent, with 4.9 doctor’s offices per 1,000 residents. Niche.com lists the median home price here as $698,700.

“The city of Golden strives to improve the quality of life for older adults by providing services and opportunities for recreation, intellectual stimulation, physical activity, volunteering, and social connection through programming and resource navigation,” says Sarah E. Vaine, thriving communities director for the city of Golden, in a statement on the city's website .

While both the cost of living and home prices are higher than the national average, according to BestPlaces , “prices for groceries, transportation, and entertainment can be lower or comparable to the rest of the country. With a vibrant and growing business climate, as well as a host of outdoor activities nearby, Golden is an attractive place for those who are willing to pay a bit more for an enjoyable lifestyle.”

Colorado Springs

John Coletti/Getty Images

Located in the Pikes Peak region in the southern part of the state, Colorado Springs is about 70 miles south of Denver, at an elevation of 6,035 feet above sea level. Nature lovers will enjoy living near Pikes Peak, rising 14,000 feet, for its gorgeous views. A challenging, 13-mile hike, a drive up Pikes Peak Highway, or a guided tour takes visitors to the summit. Garden of the Gods features red rock formations, nature walks, and stunning landscapes. The Air Force Academy and U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Museum are located in Colorado Springs, too.

Niche.com notes the median housing cost in Colorado Springs is $383,000, and according to BestPlaces , the cost of living here is about 10 percent higher than the overall U.S. and 8 percent lower than the Colorado average. BestPlaces also states the typical home cost is $440,500, which is 40 percent more than the national average. Several major hospitals in the region include UCHealth Memorial Hospital Central and Penrose Hospital, a full-service acute care facility.

Grand Junction

DenisTangneyJr/Getty Images

The largest city in western Colorado, Grand Junction is about 245 miles southwest of Denver. Named for its convergence of the Gunnison and Colorado rivers, Grand Junction offers water sports and beautiful landscapes.

Octava Reppard, director of sales at Hotel Maverick , the city’s first independent boutique hotel, was born and raised in Grand Junction. Reppard tells T+L, “Grand Junction is a great place to live because of our mild winters, welcoming community, and prime location. The landscapes are beautiful with lots of outdoor activities that include hiking, camping, hunting, skiing, and water activities in the Colorado River and several nearby lakes. Grand Junction is also the home of the stunning Colorado National Monument , which is popular with locals and visitors year-round, as well as the Grand Mesa, the largest flat top mountain in the world.”

Niche.com notes the median home value in Grand Junction is $317,700. BestNeighborhood.org states, “The most desired areas tend to be in the northwest parts of the city, while more affordable homes are in the central regions. Median house prices in Grand Junction are $268,197 ... less expensive than the U.S. median of $318,879.” When compared with the entire state, Grand Junction home prices are less than the state’s average of $430,259. The destination is home to a range of hospitals and health care facilities, too, including the Grand Junction VA Medical Center.

Located about 113 miles south of Denver, Pueblo is considered a low cost place to retire in Colorado. According to The Savvy Age , “Pueblo, Colorado, continues to make the lists for most affordable places to retire due to its climate, location, affordability, and livability scores.”

Strategistico states, “The cost of living in Pueblo is about 20 percent lower than the Colorado state average. The average monthly cost for living a standard lifestyle in Pueblo is less than $3,000 per month, which gives it the lowest cost of living compared to any other major Colorado city.

BestPlaces gives Pueblo a cost of living score of 90.3, meaning the total cost of housing, food, child care, transportation, health care, taxes, and other necessities is 9.7 percent lower than the U.S. average and 25.1 percent lower than the average for Colorado. A typical home costs $285,300, which is 15.6 percent less than the national average and 45.9 percent less expensive than the average Colorado home, according to BestPlaces. The same source estimates renting a two-bedroom unit in Pueblo costs $1,130 per month.

The moderate climate includes mild winters with light snowfall and average temperatures of 33 degrees Fahrenheit. Summer temperatures, meanwhile, average 77 degrees with low humidity. Visit Pueblo says, “We’re not just any city in Colorado — we’re a historic and diverse place that keeps it spicy with our unique Pueblo chile and enticing experiences around every corner.” Museums, art galleries, annual events like the Colorado State Fair, farmers markets, and holiday activities create a feeling of community.

Obituary: Butch Zigurs

Butch Zigurs

June 8, 1950 – June 8, 2024

Vilis “Butch” Zigurs embarked on his eternal river trip, Saturday, June 8th, 2024. It was also his 74th birthday and 58th consecutive birthday float.

He and his best friend both capsized on the Roaring Fork River, his friend held him out of the 40-degree water on top of his overturned Bi-Yak for five miles. Thankfully his friend survived with minor injuries and we are eternally grateful for his efforts. Butch unfortunately succumbed, due to the temperature of the water.

Butch grew up in a proud immigrant family that migrated out of Soviet Latvia during WWII. Fleeing the Nazis, his parents, two sisters and brother embarked on a new life in Colorado. He was the only one of his siblings born in the United States. He was a natural athlete excelling in football and basketball at Adams City High School in Commerce City, Colorado.

As a kid he was given a fishing rod by a friend (just a pole and string) and began fishing anywhere he could, local ditches mostly, starting what would become a lifelong passion. The water was his muse and he became a river guide at 16. After that, he was instrumental in starting numerous river companies.

He met the love of his life, Christy (Coomer) Zigurs on a rafting trip he was guiding in Lodore Canyon, on the Green River of Utah. They fell in love immediately. Christy became a phenomenal raft guide herself and they both dedicated themselves to running trips up and down the river wherever they could, especially Lodore Canyon.

As someone who was never able to settle for less, Butch designed and patented his own boat, called the Bi-Yak. In 1972 Butch was inducted into the Boatman’s Hall of Fame and was later honored with a lifetime achievement award. After many years of running rivers around the world, even pioneering a trip down the Biobío in Chile, Butch and Christy finally settled down in the Roaring Fork Valley in 1975.

Together they built a house on the Roaring Fork River, where they raised a beautiful family. He went on to mentor countless river enthusiasts and made many friends along the way. Even at 70 years young he was traveling the world, fly fishing, rafting and of course Bi-Yaking.

People refer to him as a legend, fish slayer, and, on occasion, a River God. Butch left a long-lasting impression on a lot of people, and he did it with few words. He had a great sense of humor and was quite the storyteller. His friends would say, “There’s the right way, the wrong way, and the Butch way!” He taught his kids the way of the water and his legacy will forever live on.

Butch is survived by his wife, Christy Zigurs; children, Brooke Lodore Zigurs Carmichael (Evan Carmichael), Hannah Crystal Zigurs (Eric Dykann) and Hayden Vilis Zigurs (Tim Foulk); siblings, Raita Jergensen (Richard Jergensen), Gundega Undiks (Peter Undiks) and their children.

He was preceded in death by his father, Vilis Zigurs; mother, Maiga Zigurs; and brother Maris Zigurs.

A celebration of life will be announced shortly.

A taste of Aspen: Michelin Guide recommendations and new culinary hotspots

aspen colorado trip

In September 2023, Aspen solidified its status as a food destination with the arrival of the Michelin Guide to Colorado. Local establishment Bosq was the only restaurant outside of the Front Range to earn a coveted Michelin star. The intimate, tasting menu eatery is run by Aspen native and James Beard Award-nominated chef Barclay Dodge and his wife, Molly. While Bosq was the only restaurant among Colorado’s iconic resort towns of Aspen, Beaver Creek, Vail, and Snowmass Village to receive a star, other restaurants in the region earned “recommended” status...

5 reasons why Colorado has become a favorite vacation spot for Texans

C olorado has been beckoning explorers to its untamed lands with the promise of adventure, riches and cheap land ever since the Pikes Peak gold rush in the mid-1800s. These days, there is a gold rush of a different kind for those seeking a cool respite from the Lone Star State's relentless summer heat. Traveling to Colorado is a leisurely road trip for most of the state, making visiting during the summer months an attractive option.

According to the 2022 Colorado Tourism travel report , more than 90 million people visited the Rocky Mountain State in 2022. Texans accounted for 8.1 million of these visitors from July through September, with California leading the way with 10.8 million visitors during that period. Of those Texas visitors, three percent came from the Dallas-Fort Worth area, and two percent were from Houston.

Upon arrival in Colorado, the 12-to-14-hour drive will quickly become a distant memory. The powder-packed mountains of winter have given way to cool mountain air, gorgeous views on every horizon, top-notch hiking destinations, hot springs and more. Other than larger crowds during the Fourth of July holiday, any time is prime time to visit Colorado. The temperatures don't start getting really cold until mid-November, so don't sleep on the shoulder season of late summer and early autumn.

Although Colorado is an outdoor enthusiasts' paradise, there are plenty of urban and cultural delights to explore. Grab a pair of hiking boots, pack a light jacket and follow the crowds west.

Enjoy classy culture in Aspen

Aspen is a luxurious playground for the social elite during ski season. Celebrities and socialites flock to the mountain town to see and be seen, but a more casual vibe prevails during the summer months, making way for families and outdoor activities. The Roaring Fork River flows through town and is an excellent option for a scenic raft ride or a thrilling whitewater experience. The river is also great for fishing with several local companies providing tours and equipment. Hikers of all skill levels are in for an unforgettable adventure, as the snowy ski trails make for excellent summer treks . Aspen's vibrant cultural scene also thrives during the peak summer months. Visitors can choose from live music festivals, ballet, theater and opera performances.

Fly high in Breckenridge

With an elevation of 9,600 feet, the town of Breckenridge offers panoramic views and a laid-back, welcoming atmosphere. Breckenridge Ski Resort is a mecca for thrill-seeking mountain bikers, with a dedicated biking lift and a selection of blue (intermediate) and black (expert) trails. Visitors to the resort can also soar 11,000 feet above sea level for a scenic chair ride or take the exhilarating Alpine Coaster down the mountain. With access to hundreds of trails, hikers in Breckenridge have their choice of both beginner-friendly and ultra-challenging treks. The area is also a hotspot for whitewater rafting, kayaking, fly fishing and stand-up paddle boarding in its gorgeous alpine lakes. After a long day spent outdoors, visitors can go underground and tour a gold mine from the 1800s or pull up a chair at one of the city's many breweries .

Go wild in Estes Park

Estes Park is bordered on three sides by Rocky Mountain National Park, and being surrounded by so much protected land has advantages. One of them is getting up close views of many different kinds of wildlife. "Elk jams" or traffic due to elk in the road are a common event, and there is a good chance visitors will get a glimpse of the northern city's mighty five: elk, mule deer, moose, bighorn sheep and black bear. The area is brimming with scenic drives, including the Trail Ridge Road , the highest continuous paved road in the United States. Rising 12,183 above sea level, it offers panoramic views of Rocky Mountain National Park. For those who can't leave Texas behind, Estes Park is home to the Rooftop Rodeo , known as America's highest rodeo, which runs from July 5 to 10 annually.

Enjoy alpine adventures in Rocky Mountain National Park

The average high temperatures in Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) between June and August are 74 to 80 degrees, and the lows are near 50. If this sounds like perfect summer vacation weather, a trip to the northernmost national park in Colorado is in order. Visitors to the national park, which requires a timed-entry reservation , are in for stunning views of sky-high forested peaks, alpine lakes and the Continental Divide. One of the most frequented areas in RMNP is Beak Lake Road . The 9-mile road dead ends into Bear Lake and has access to some of the park's 355 miles of hiking trails. Serious and well-prepared hikers can attempt Longs Peak , the only 14er (mountains exceeding 14,000 feet) summit in the park. Stargazing, wildlife viewing, fishing and the park's ranger programs for children are also popular activities.

Get outdoors in Ouray

Located only an hour east of Telluride, the charming city of Ouray is the self-proclaimed "outdoor recreation capital of Colorado." The community was also named a "trending destination" in Airbnb's travel trends report , based on online searches between January and March 15 for stays in June, July and August. Guests to the mountain community will have first-in-line access to Colorado's Million Dollar Highway , which starts in Ouray and winds through the San Juan Mountains, passing many cultural sites, including historic mining towns and scenic overlooks, before ending in Silverton. Outdoor enthusiasts can experience a box canyon waterfall or traverse the area's 84 hiking trails, each offering beautiful panoramic views. Those looking for a more relaxing adventure can soak the day away in one of Ouray's four hot springs or sip on craft spirits and brews, as the city has the most breweries and distilleries per capita in the state.
