Chase Travel Is Growing as Fast as Booking Holdings But Faces ‘Headwinds’

Dennis Schaal , Skift

May 23rd, 2024 at 4:38 PM EDT

If a soft economy is causing luxury travelers to limit their discretionary spending, that's sour news for Chase Travel in the short term. But over the long term, Chase Travel and some of its banking peers are trending upwards in travel.

Dennis Schaal

Chase Travel grew sales last year at a pace on par with Booking Holdings and far ahead of Expedia Group.

Still, Chase Travel is a fraction of their size and it’s been around only a few years – it launched its new brand identity just this year.

And it reported at its annual investor day earlier this week that “macro travel headwinds” were impacting its profit margins. Booking Holdings CEO Glenn Fogel, meanwhile, said he saw “resiliency in global leisure travel demand” in the first quarter.

Chase Travel, which skews toward travelers looking for premium trips, is seeing softness among luxury-oriented travelers. Marianne Lake, CEO of Consumer & Community Banking, which includes travel, told investors that “higher income segments are showing lower growth with slowing discretionary spend, including in travel and luxury retail.”

What the Numbers Say

Chase Travel, a division of JPMorgan Chase, said its aim is to attract new customers and to gain share from competitors, which in the case of Booking Holdings and Expedia, have been around for decades.

Let’s look at the latest gross bookings numbers, which is the total amount of travel sold, not revenue, at Chase Travel compared to Booking and Expedia.

2023 Gross Bookings and Percentage Increase

Source: Company filings/Skift

Chase Travel grew its gross bookings 25% year-over-year in 2023, edging out Booking Holdings at 24%.

Expedia Group, which was putting the finishing touches on rolling its Vrbo vacation rental unit onto a common Expedia-Hotels.com tech platform last year, lagged with growth at just 10%.

Chase Travel, of course, should be growing faster given that it’s essentially a travel startup. It was just 6.6% the size of Booking Holdings in gross bookings in 2023, and 9.6% the size of Expedia Group. It’s notable that Booking grew at a similar pace.

In addition, Expedia supplies a major portion of Chase Travel’s hotel supply. So gross bookings growth at Chase Travel is good news for Expedia Group — unless a chunk of Chase Travel’s customers would have otherwise booked at Expedia.

At JPMorgan’s investor day a year ago, the company said Chase Travel was on track to do $10 billion in sales in 2023, which it achieved, and $15 billion in 2025. Chase didn’t explicitly reiterate that $15 billion target for its travel business this week. However, it may be folded into a $30 billion target for all of its commerce platforms that Chase articulated a few days ago.

What Else Did Chase Travel Do in 2023 and 2024?

Along with the official launch of Chase Travel in 2024, it ran its first national multimedia brand campaign, Where Travelers Go . [You can also view the ad below.]

The company now has six airport lounges — Expedia and Booking have none — including two it opened this year at LaGuardia and JFK. Six more are in the pipeline.

Chase Travel offers more than 350,000 hotels, and last year it launched a premium hotel collection called The Edit, which now has 800 properties.

In late 2023, it began enabling cardholders to book Southwest’s leisure fares with points or cash — and that’s something that no other credit card companies or online travel agencies have announced they can do. Google Flights began displaying Southwest’s flights for the first time this week. Southwest is one of the largest domestic airlines in the U.S.

Among other data points that Chase Travel released this week:

  • Its bookings increased 12% in the first quarter year over year;
  • Chase Travel attracted 3.5 million unique customers, a 19% jump, and they booked 9 million trips in 2023.

Chase Introducing New ChaseTravel.com Booking Portal And More Airport Lounges

by Gary Leff on May 29, 2022

As noted by Skift Chase revealed at its investor day that they’re going to launch ChaseTravel.com this year.

They expect $8 billion in travel sales in 2022, $10 billion next year, and $15 billion by 2025

25% of leisure travel spend is on a Chase credit card (and 33% by Chase customers)

[In] US leisure travel, $1 in every $4 spent is on a Chase Card, and $1 in every $3 spent is by a Chase customer. And the stats for dining are quite similar. But only a small percentage of this spend went through our platform because our assets were not differentiated.

I was (the only one that was) highly critical of their move to outsource their rewards booking portal to Expedia of all companies. They ultimately acquired cxLoyalty, which they used prior to Expedia and which I found to offer better service. Now, investing in that platform, they intent to benefit fully from their customers’ travel spend in terms of experience , commissions , and data marketing their customers to other firms.

Our travel business is cash flow positive today. The acquisitions pay back within six years on strong revenue margins. And for context here, industry commissions mix dependent are about 10%. And now we’re getting all of that, whereas previously we were not. The business will require little marketing expense as we leverage our existing customers and channels reinforced by our loyalty program Ultimate Rewards. And so, the net of all of that, we expect a net margin of about 5% plus or minus.

ChaseTravel.com Portal Brings Together Numerous Investments

Capital One quickly moved from $170 million investment in Hopper to launch of its new travel portal, with differentiated features like price prediction and rich travel protections. The opportunity in travel and experiences for high-end customers is one that’s shared broadly in the industry.

Chase has had numerous assets but they’ve been little marketed to customers so far. The new ChaseTravel.com is supposed to solve this. For instance, beyond cxLoyalty and a premium leisure travel agency they launched a dining hub including a Tock reservations platform integration and acquired The Infatuation and Zagat for rich content.

Eight Airport Lounges Are Coming

Last year we learned that Chase would launch its own lounge network in conjunction with Airport Dimensions, which runs The Club lounges and shares a parent company with Priority Pass.

They’ve contracted for eight lounges in total so far, joining both American Express and Capital One in offering lounges to cardmembers.

Offering Travel To Existing Customers Isn’t Enough

Capital One has aspirations to do travel better . We don’t yet know what Chase will deliver beyond an integrated marketing of the assets it has acquired.

Online travel had been well-consolidated in the U.S. between Expedia and Booking.com. There hasn’t even been an independent Orbitz for years. And online travel has largely stagnated.

Sites like Expedia advertise to gain consumer eyeballs, and then sell those eyeballs to travel providers (mostly hotels). They don’t help customers do travel better, and haven’t meaningfully improved their experiences whether it’s customer service when things go wrong or proactive, customized guidance on making the best travel purchase decisions, in the past 15 years.

When travel booking went mostly online that was lower transaction cost, but something was lost compared to the best agencies. Travel is complicated and advice is missing. You go online and see schedules and price, or location and property features, but little to tell you whether to take that 45 minute connection in Chicago in winter, whether for your trip you should go out the night before or take the first flight rather than last flight of the day, and what kind of backup options you may have. RouteHappy (acquired by ATPCO) at least began the process of offering richer features of flights, to differentiate beyond merely price and schedule.

The potential in online travel, as a tool both to support the financial businesses and to market revenue accretive products to affluent customers, puts banks squarely in the space as competitors in an otherwise-moribund industry. Google was supposed to disrupt travel search and booking but that’s been the next big thing in the space for over a decade. Whether or not banks deliver, having more competitors can only benefit consumers.

My only concern with using a portal to book travel is customer service in case of a problem. I’ve always trusted Chase Reserve to ‘save me’, but have never had the need to test it. One of the big reasons I got the Reserve card was to have a CS number that was answered by a human. They’ve been pretty good about that over the years. Do you think that Chase might divide the huge number of new travel customers by ‘status’ so Reserve cardholders will experience little waiting and agents who are capable of fixing things without endless escalation?

Sure hope Capital one improves their Travel Portal. It is the only thing I find lacking with the VentureX.

Didn’t Cap1 buy Freebird…the flight rebooking travel insurance? Any update on that?

I used it the 2 times I flew Spirit…one of them being an MCO-ORD flight that was canceled. Ended up in full F/J on Delta MCO-ATL-ORD for $19

I wonder if I book through Chase a UA ticket: 1. Can I change or cancel flights on united.com? 2. If I cancel the reservation, does the travel credit goes to my UA MileagePlus account, or to the Chase account?

My guess is that Chase acquisitions will ultimately improve some aspects of the consumer experience. But online is online and converting a human headset to intervene with high-level airline, hotel, cruise and tour management will always be less effective than dealing with someone who knows you and knows them.

You don’t go online to ask someone to go online to fix your problem. Leisure travel will always be best handled by those who have hundreds of personal phone numbers to reach out personally to those around-the-world sources when you need help.

Chase, if you’re reading this, please make a lounge at LAX!

Splid article. Well done, Gary.

How about a Chase lounge at Palm Springs? The bastard step-child airport with lots of premium travelers.

@Alan — I second that! PSP definitely needs a premium lounge.

You forgot to mention that Chase is in the process of acquiring a large travel agency called Frosch. Seems like they are trying to copy the Amex playbook but hopefully execute in a better way.

Chase needs to somehow quickly make up for the failed Priority Pass which no longer has any lounges left on its pass and we’re still paying for Priority Pass via our Chase reserve high annual fee!

Travel portals seem decent until you need to make a change or the airline does something to your itinerary that you don’t care for…that’s when the wheels of the travel portals come off completely.

cxLoyalty is the absolute WORST to deal with and the airlines are quick to send you back to them if there is ANYTHING that needs to be modified. As of today, cxLoyalty/Citi still has $324 that I gave up on because dealing with this became to painful.

I noticed their intent to put a Chase lounge in LAS terminal C. That’s huge. That terminal is entirely Southwest gates. Existing lounges (Priority Pass, Amex, and United) are in terminals D and E, a long way from the Southwest gates. (There’s also a USO lounge landside, near where the old America West lounge used to be). I look forward to that Chase lounge opening.

I have been a customer for some many years of chase bank and also have a sapphire preferred card for a long time. I love to travel to Mexico frequently. I don’t no access to any of the lounges at the Mexican airport with my chase card. It would be possible that chase can do some about it.. Thank you

Chase offers 5% rebate on air tix booked through their travel portal and paid with (Amazon) Prime card. I’ve looked at number of potential purchases — without fail the prices shown are 5% higher than through other OTAs.

For qualifying Chase cardholders, the easy-to-use Chase Travel℠ portal offers a flexible and convenient way to book hotels, flights, rental cars, cruises and more using points or a combination of points and cash.

What is the Chase travel portal?

A favorite among frequent travelers for its versatility and redemption options, Chase Ultimate Rewards® (UR) is one of the major transferable credit card rewards points programs and UR points are Chase’s flexible rewards currency.

The Chase travel portal works much like an online travel agency (OTA) similar to Orbitz or Priceline where you can book hotels, flights, cars, activities and cruises. But unlike a traditional OTA, with the Chase travel portal you can book travel with your Chase card’s rewards points, cash or a combination of the two.

Who can use the portal?

A handful of exclusively Chase-issued credit cards grant cardholders access to the Chase travel portal, but how you can utilize the portal and the value you can receive is card-specific.

The following credit cards are the only cards that earn Chase Ultimate Rewards points outright:

  • Chase Sapphire Reserve®
  • Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card
  • Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card * The information for the Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card has been collected independently by Blueprint. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

But if you or a household member own at least one of the cards above, the rewards on the following cash-back credit cards can be combined with any of the cards listed above and used as Chase Ultimate Rewards points:

  • Chase Freedom Flex® * The information for the Chase Freedom Flex® has been collected independently by Blueprint. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.
  • Chase Freedom Unlimited®
  • Ink Business Cash® Credit Card
  • Ink Business Unlimited® Credit Card

And while the points earned cannot be combined with any of the UR-earning cards, the following pay-in-full card does have access to the Chase travel portal:

  • Ink Business Premier℠ Credit Card * The information for the Ink Business Premier℠ Credit Card has been collected independently by Blueprint. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Is the portal worth using?

It’s often said that having the right travel credit card is important, but knowing how to redeem your miles and points can be as paramount as which card you use to earn them. However, not everybody has the patience or interest to learn the intricacies of different rewards programs to maximize the value of every mile and point.

So while transferring UR points to individual loyalty programs is still one of the best ways to get the most cents per point at a 1:1 basis, for those who value simplicity, the Chase travel portal offers a straightforward way to book travel, earn and redeem points and still receive a great deal. Best of all, you won’t be limited by any loyalty program or award space availability.

When transferring points, the minimum you can transfer is 1,000 points to the following UR travel partners with either the Chase Sapphire Reserve, Chase Sapphire Preferred or the Ink Business Preferred cards:

Regardless of how you’re using the Chase travel portal, it’s worth considering the pros and cons.

  • The standard rate for Ultimate Rewards points when redeemed for travel through the Chase travel portal is 1 UR point = 1 cent, but can be worth significantly more with the UR-earning cards. The Chase Sapphire Reserve gets a redemption value of 1.5 cents per point through the Chase Travel℠ portal while the Chase Sapphire Preferred and Chase Ink Business Preferred cards each get 1.25 cents per point.
  • Since you’re not limited to any loyalty programs, you can use your UR points to book boutique hotels that you’d otherwise only be able to book with cash.
  • Flights booked through the Chase travel portal can earn frequent flyer miles and can be used toward advancing your elite status.
  • You can earn a substantial amount of bonus points when booking through the Chase portal depending on the card you’re using.
  • You can use a combination of points plus cash to purchase your reservation.
  • Hotels booked through the Chase travel portal do not earn hotel points or credits toward elite status. Any elite status perks you’d receive if booking directly with the hotel will likely be forgone.
  • If you experience any issues while traveling, you’d have to go through Chase to resolve the issue. For example, if there is a problem with your hotel reservation, you’ll have to contact a Chase representative for help resolving it since you didn’t book directly with the hotel. Dealing with a middleman during travel emergencies is less than ideal and something to be wary of when considering booking through the portal.
  • Southwest Airlines flights do not show up in the UR travel portal, but can be reserved by calling the Chase Travel Center at 855-233-9462.

How to book travel through the Chase travel portal

You can access the Chase travel portal by logging into your Chase account and clicking on the Rewards balance on the right or by going to the Chase Ultimate Rewards website .

Once you’re logged in, if you have more than one UR-earning Chase card, you’ll be asked to select one to proceed with — a crucial step as each card has different earning and redemption rates.

chase travel launch

After clicking on your selection, you will be taken to the Ultimate Rewards dashboard. If you click on the Earn / Use dropdown button, all of your Ultimate Rewards options will be presented. Click on Travel to proceed to the portal.

chase travel launch

Once in the travel portal, you’ll  have the option of selecting the type of booking you’d like to make.

chase travel launch

From there, your user experience will be similar to any other OTA where you can search your travel options.

Because the Chase travel portal doesn’t limit you to transfer partners or loyalty programs, you’ll be able to search almost all major airlines. One notable exception is Southwest Airlines, which is still bookable using UR points but will require a phone call to the Chase Travel Center to reserve your flight.

chase travel launch

One difference compared to a traditional OTA is the option to buy in cash, points or a combination of both.

chase travel launch

If you’re short on points or if you’d like to offset the cash price with some points, you’re given the option to choose how to pay.

chase travel launch

After that, you’ll be prompted to enter your traveler information and you’re all booked. However, you will have to log into the specific airline with your reservation code in order to reserve seats.

Booking hotels through the Chase travel portal is a similar process. And with the portal’s easy-to-use search function, you can find boutique hotels that would otherwise be unbookable with loyalty-program-based points.

chase travel launch

However, if you have elite status with a hotel chain, you’ll want to book directly rather than going through the Chase portal in order to access status benefits and have that hotel stay count toward achieving a higher status. Or, you can transfer UR points to one of three UR hotel loyalty program transfer partners, including Marriott Bonvoy, World of Hyatt or IHG One Rewards.

Rental cars can also be booked through the portal in a similar fashion. And as in many cases, being aware of which card you’re booking your car rental with can make a big difference in case of an accident as both the Chase Sapphire Reserve and Chase Sapphire Preferred offer primary car insurance , an uncommon, money-saving benefit, which saves you from having to file a claim with your private car insurance carrier first.

A quick guide to the Chase Ultimate Rewards program

As some of the most sought-after flexible points, Chase Ultimate Rewards can be accrued through several avenues. The most lucrative way is by applying for Chase credit cards and earning their respective welcome bonuses — but be wary of Chase’s 5/24 rule , which blocks applicants from opening a Chase credit card if they’ve opened five or more cards from any issuer in the past 24 months.

If you have two Chase cards that earn UR points, you can then transfer the rewards earned to the card that carries the most redemption value. For example, you can open the Chase Sapphire Preferred card and then the Chase Freedom Flex and move any points earned on the Flex card to the Preferred card, which has a boosted value of 25% more when redeemed through the portal.

Looking to add more than one new credit card to your wallet? Here’s why you shouldn’t apply for multiple cards at the same time.

Outside of regular credit card spending, you can also grow your Ultimate Rewards pile by using the Chase shopping portal. By adding just one extra step to your online shopping, you can earn bonus points for your future travels.

While transferring points to partners is one option to maximize the value of your Chase Ultimate Rewards points, there are numerous other ways to use the Chase Ultimate Rewards program to your benefit. Whether it’s redeeming your points as a statement credit for eligible, rotating categories throughout the year through the “Pay Yourself Back” feature, booking special dining experiences with your points or using the portal to book your next vacation, the Chase Ultimate Rewards program’s flexibility makes it a great option regardless of your lifestyle.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Chase Ultimate Rewards (UR) are Chase Bank’s flexible rewards currency that can be earned on several of its credit cards.

The Chase travel portal can be accessed through the Chase app or the Chase website. After logging in, you can select the option to book travel.

You can use your Chase travel credit, like the up to $50 annual hotel statement credit offered by the Chase Sapphire Preferred, by booking your travel through the Chase travel portal. The statement credit will automatically be applied to your account within one to two billing cycles after your purchase posts to your account — up to an annual maximum accumulation of $50.

You can redeem your Chase Ultimate Rewards directly through the travel portal with almost all major airlines with the exception of Southwest Airlines, which can be booked over the phone. With Southwest, select the flight you want at Southwest.com and then call Chase Travel Center at 855-233-9462 with the flight details.

The value you receive from the Chase travel portal will depend on the credit card you’re using. For example, if you have either the Chase Sapphire Reserve or the Chase Sapphire Preferred, your points are worth either 50% or 25% more, respectively, when redeemed for travel.

Booking travel through a credit card issuer’s portal — which is essentially their version of an online travel agency (OTA) such as Expedia or Orbitz — has its pros and cons.

The main advantage is extra rewards. That’s what convinced me to book a recent trip through the Chase Travel℠ portal using my Chase Freedom Flex® *.

I earned 5 percent cash back on those flights, whereas I would have only earned 1 percent if I booked directly with the airline. I bought $1,137.26 worth of airfare, so there was a significant difference between 5 percent ($56.86) and 1 percent ($11.37).

Sometimes it can also make sense to use a card issuer’s travel portal if you’re redeeming rewards for the trip. That’s especially compelling if you have a card like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card or Chase Sapphire Reserve® , which boosts the value of your points by 25 percent and 50 percent, respectively, if you redeem them through the Chase Travel portal.

The main drawback of any OTA — card issuer portals included — is that booking travel this way introduces an intermediary into the transaction. If anything goes wrong with your trip, you need to deal with the travel agency’s customer service instead of (or sometimes in addition to) the hotel or airline provider. This can make things more complicated.

Another important note is that hotel bookings made through OTAs typically do not earn loyalty points or count toward elite status. Airline reservations, on the other hand, are generally eligible for frequent flyer miles and elite status qualification.

In my case, I decided that an extra $45.49 in cash back was worth giving the Chase travel portal a shot. I also viewed it as a professional development opportunity to see how this works in the real world.

What happened with my trip

A 2023 Bankrate survey revealed that 77 percent of travelers who’ve traveled for leisure or business this year experienced at least one travel-related problem. These included higher prices than they were accustomed to (53 percent), long waits (25 percent), poor customer service (24 percent), hard-to-find availability (23 percent) and canceled or disrupted plans (23 percent). I experienced every single one of those things the night before my wife and daughter were scheduled to leave on the trip I booked through Chase.

Actually, I should back up. The problems started even earlier than that. Weeks before the trip, American Airlines made a schedule change that jeopardized my wife Chelsea and daughter Ashleigh’s chances of making their connecting flight. The new layover seemed impossibly short.

This was my first test of the customer service for the Chase travel portal. They passed with flying colors, efficiently rebooking Chelsea and Ashleigh at no extra cost and arranging the flights in such a way that it seemed much more likely they would be able to get from one plane to the other. It was fairly complicated because the connecting city needed to change, but the whole process was smooth. I was impressed.

Fast-forward to the night before the trip

We received an email from American Airlines that Chelsea and Ashleigh’s flight from Newark to Phoenix was canceled. There was no explanation, but we assume it had to do with either a staffing or equipment shortage since the weather was calm on both ends; the airline offered to rebook them on the same itinerary two days later. That was far from ideal, since the whole trip was only supposed to last five days (the ultimate destination was Monterey, California, where Chelsea’s parents live).

We simultaneously reached out to both Chase and American. Chelsea reported that the wait to speak with someone at the airline was listed at four hours. I got through to a Chase representative almost immediately.

I explained the situation, and the customer service agent and I started brainstorming alternatives. Was there a different way to get to Phoenix in time for the connecting flight to Monterey? We looked at Newark, JFK, LaGuardia — even as far away as Philadelphia and Hartford, but no dice. How about an entirely new routing? Could they fly from somewhere in the New York area to San Francisco, San Jose or Oakland, California? Those cities are all within a couple hours’ drive of Monterey.

After several attempts to find something that would work, we gave up. Nothing seemed to work. The Chase representative was great, and I feel like he did everything he could to try and solve our dilemma. American Airlines just didn’t have any availability.

We eventually got through to American Airlines and confirmed there were only two options: Travel two days later or cancel. We opted to cancel but — plot twist — we still found a way for Chelsea to visit her parents and for Ashleigh to see her grandparents. We rolled the dice and made an entirely new reservation with JetBlue. They had an early-morning flight from JFK to San Francisco with a few available seats.

The backup plan

The trip ended up costing $700 more due to higher-priced, last-minute plane tickets and a rental car to get them from San Francisco to Monterey, but the trip had a happy ending. It was ironic, too, because we had sworn off JetBlue after experiencing significant issues with them during family trips in the past. This time, they saved the day, and American Airlines dropped the ball.

I’ve heard that some people have taken to making backup flight reservations, especially on carriers such as Southwest, which have particularly generous cancellation policies. I’m not sure I would go that far, but there’s no doubt air travel has been a mess lately. In my view, airlines need to do a much better job of setting their schedules and sticking to them. Unfortunately, there’s little that passengers can do to protect themselves.

Travel insurance might help, and some travel credit cards provide travel insurance benefits at no added cost. But, at the end of the day, the airlines are the ones responsible for getting us from point A to point B.

The Chase portal wasn’t the problem; I would use it again. But given the current state of the airline industry, I’m going to be anxiously waiting to see if my next flight takes off as planned.

Chase Sapphire Reserve® is a premium rewards card for avid travelers. It comes with useful travel perks, such as a Global Entry, TSA PreCheck or Nexus enrollment fee credit, an auto rental collision damage waiver, as well as trip interruption and cancellation insurance.

But what about Chase Sapphire Reserve® lounge access? There’s good news on that front. The card already gives cardholders unlimited access to Priority Pass lounges.

Chase is also in the process of opening the Sapphire Reserve Lounges, more formally known as Chase Sapphire Lounge by The Club. These lounges are expected to compete with AmEx Centurion lounges and Capital One lounges.

Here’s everything we know about these upcoming Chase airport lounges:

1. How Chase Sapphire Reserve® lounge access works

Chase Sapphire Reserve Credit Card

Since launch, the Chase Sapphire Reserve® has offered its cardholders a complimentary Priority Pass Select membership, which provides access to more than 1,300 airport lounges and restaurants worldwide. You and up to two guests are able to access any of the lounges in the Priority Pass network.

To increase its offerings, Chase is partnering with Airport Dimensions, a global airport lounge operator, to build and operate its own lounges for cardmembers. The Sapphire-branded airport lounges are called the Chase Sapphire Lounge by The Club.

2. There are Chase Sapphire lounges in Hong Kong, Boston and New York, with more to come

The Chase Sapphire Lounge by The Club has opened in Hong Kong. Then there's also a quasi-lounge owned by Chase called the Sapphire Terrace, which opened on March 20, 2023, at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. That said, Chase doesn't refer to it as a lounge but rather an "experience" with complementary alcohol and some light snacks.

The first U.S.-based Chase Sapphire Lounge by The Club opened at Boston Logan International Airport in the spring of 2023. near Gate 40. It is open daily from 5 a.m.-11 p.m. near gate B40 and includes a wellness area with bookable amenities, bathrooms with showers, a nursing room, and fresh, seasonal dining and drink options.

Additional Sapphire lounges at New York-JFK and New York-LaGuardia are now open as well (check out our review of the spacious LaGuardia lounge ). We don’t know the exact opening dates for all of the forthcoming lounges, but we do know their locations. You’ll be able to find the first set of Sapphire lounges at the following airports:

Las Vegas (LAS).

Philadelphia (PHL).

Phoenix (PHX).

San Diego (SAN).

3. How to get into a Chase Sapphire lounge

If you hold the Chase Sapphire Reserve® card, J.P. Morgan Reserve card and The Ritz-Carlton Credit Card, as long as you've activated your complimentary Priority Pass membership, you and two guests may enter the lounge for free.

Other credit cards with Priority Pass Select membership , such as The Platinum Card® from American Express (enrollment required) or the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card , get one complimentary visit per calendar year to the Chase Sapphire Lounge by The Club. Terms apply.

At the moment, no other credit card-affiliated lounges, such as The Centurion Lounge or the Capital One Lounge, grant Priority Pass Select members access. This could increase crowding at the Chase lounge — the very thing many airport lounges try to curb.

Currently, Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card customers do not have complimentary lounge access.

To get Chase Sapphire Reserve Lounge access, you’ll simply show your card and a boarding pass at the check-in desk, and you should be able to use all the amenities that a lounge offers while waiting for your flight.

4. What is the most affordable way to get access to Sapphire Lounges from Chase?

Priority Pass Select members will be able to access the new Chase Sapphire Lounges once per calendar year. Additional visits are discounted to $75 per person. (A day pass is typically $100).

These are some of the cards that include a Priority Pass membership:

Eight free Priority Pass lounge visits per year.

5. Other cards with airport lounge access

Two other credit card issuers have built airport lounges specifically for their own cardholders: American Express and Capital One.

American Express

American Express runs The Centurion Lounge network of lounges for people with the following cards:

The Business Platinum Card® from American Express

For most cards, only cardholders are able to enter the lounges for free; guests cost $50 per adult and $30 per child.

The Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card holder can enter all U.S. lounges as well as the lounges in Hong Kong and London. Access is limited to the primary cardholder flying on a same-day Delta ticket. Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card holders have four one-time guest passes each year; once used up, cardholders may bring up to two guests for $50 per person per visit.

You can find the Centurion Lounges at the following U.S. airports:

Dallas-Fort Worth.

Houston-Intercontinental.

Los Angeles.

New York-JFK.

New York-LaGuardia.

Newark ( slated to open in 2026 ).

Philadelphia.

San Francisco.

International locations with American Express lounges include:

Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Delhi, India.

London-Heathrow.

Melbourne, Australia.

Mexico City.

Monterrey, Mexico.

Mumbai, India.

Capital One

Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card

If you hold the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card , you and up to two guests get access to the Capital One Lounge. Additional guests are charged $45. The Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card and Spark Miles cardmembers receive two complimentary visits per calendar year.

Non-cardholders can pay $65 per visit to enter the Capital One Lounge, which is not offered at The Centurion Lounge locations.

There are three Capital One Lounges that are currently open. They are located at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, Dulles International Airport and at Denver International Airport.

Although there's only two Sapphire Reserve Lounge currently open, the new haven in the purgatory that is the airport terminal is welcome. We have yet to see what the lounge will offer and how busy it’ll be so as to assess whether it’s a worthy competitor of the Centurion and the Capital One lounges.

2 Broward County schools launch metal detector pilot program for enhanced security

Hannah Yechivi , Reporter

Saira Anwer , Reporter

BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. – Two schools in Broward County -- Charles W. Flanagan High School in Pembroke Pines and J.P. Taravella High School in Coral Springs -- began implementing metal detectors on their campuses Monday.

The initiative aims to enhance security across all 31 high schools in the district by enabling officers to detect any possible weapons before it’s too late.

Broward Superintendent Howard Hepburn marked the first day of summer school as an ideal time to launch this new safety program.

“This is just an additional layer to make sure that we can be as safe as possible,” said Hepburn.

Parents have shown strong support for the initiative.

“You always want students to feel that they are in a safe environment. Without that, it can impede their learning,” said parent McFredy Antoine.

“I think it’s good for the kids, good for their safety,” another parent told Local 10 News.

The Broward County School Board approved the measure unanimously, with strong advocacy from Broward School Board Chair Lori Alhadeff, who lost her daughter Alyssa, 14, to gun violence in the Parkland shooting.

“The addition of these walk-through weapons detectors adds another layer of security as part of our commitment to providing safe and secure learning environments,” Alhadeff said.

By the start of the new school year in August, the goal is to have metal detectors operational in every high school in Broward County, according to Hepburn.

Chief of Safety and Security Officer Jaime Alberti explained the procedure when a detector goes off:

“There will be a secondary search and inspection of the student’s backpack,” he said.

At Flanagan High School, the cost for one pair of detectors was $16,000, and there will be three sets at different entry points.

Despite some concerns about privacy, many parents believe it is a necessary measure.

“People may think it’s an invasion of privacy, but it’s a great thing,” said Antoine.

On the first day of the pilot program, 300 students passed through the detection system at Flanagan High School without incident.

Despite the new safety measures, Hepburn encourages parents to check their children’s backpacks before sending them to school.

The installation of metal detectors across Broward County high schools is set to cost $1.8 million. Each set of metal detectors costs $16,000, and Flanagan High School plans to install one set at three different campus entry points.

Chase Sapphire Reserve credit card review: Luxury perks and valuable rewards

Emily Thompson

Chase Sapphire Reserve Card overview

The Chase Sapphire Reserve® is one of the best rewards credit cards of all time. Offering up to 10 points per dollar on travel through Chase Travel℠ and dining through Chase Ultimate Rewards, this card earns incredibly valuable Ultimate Rewards points that can be transferred to hotel and airline partners or redeemed directly for flights at a rate of 1.5 cents per point. Add in a $300 annual travel credit, airport lounge access and a litany of other perks, and this card is guaranteed to upgrade your travel lifestyle. Card Rating*: ⭐⭐⭐⭐½

* Card Rating is based on the opinion of TPG's editors and is not influenced by the card issuer.

The Chase Sapphire Reserve is the card that convinced average consumers that they could come out ahead with a premium credit card even after paying an annual fee of several hundred dollars a year.

In fact, the Sapphire Reserve was so successful from the moment it launched in 2016 (with an initial 100,000-point welcome bonus) that Chase temporarily ran out of the metal slabs needed to produce the cards.

If you have an excellent credit score and want premium benefits, the Sapphire Reserve could be a great option for you. Let's review the features that continue to make it such an attractive travel credit card — one that has earned a permanent spot at the top of many TPG wallets.

Chase Sapphire Reserve pros and cons

Chase sapphire reserve welcome offer.

Right now, the Chase Sapphire Reserve has a welcome offer of 60,000 points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening.

With a value of 2.05 cents apiece for Chase Ultimate Rewards points (according to TPG June 2024 valuations ), the current 60,000-point bonus on the Sapphire Reserve is worth $1,230. That's equivalent to more than two years of its $550 annual fee.

chase travel launch

Even if you don't utilize Chase's transfer partners, Sapphire Reserve cardholders get a value of 1.5 cents per Ultimate Rewards point when redeeming for travel in the Chase Travel portal , making the bonus worth $900 when redeemed through the portal. Even if you're a novice in the travel rewards field and don't know how to maximize transfer partners, you're guaranteed to get your money's worth in travel from the welcome bonus if you use your points to book travel through the portal.

Remember, too, that booking a flight this way typically counts as a revenue booking. This means you'll earn airline miles and elite credit as well, getting you even more value.

That said, it's important to keep Chase's application restrictions in mind, especially regarding the Sapphire cards. And because of Chase's 5/24 rule , you'll want to apply for Chase cards first before turning to other issuers. That's why picking the right Sapphire product for your situation is critical.

Chase Sapphire Reserve benefits

The Chase Sapphire Reserve doesn't offer quite as many perks as The Platinum Card® from American Express , but it has plenty of valuable perks to appeal to many travelers. Here are the details on the main benefits of the Sapphire Reserve:

Annual travel credit

One of the biggest benefits of the card is the $300 annual travel credit . Chase will automatically credit your account $300 when you use it to make eligible purchases — which cover a wide variety of travel providers :

Merchants in the travel category include airlines, hotels, motels, timeshares, car rental agencies, cruise lines, travel agencies, discount travel sites, campgrounds and operators of passenger trains, buses, taxis, limousines, ferries, toll bridges and highways, and parking lots and garages.

This perk alone lowers your effective annual fee to just $250.

Lounge access

Sapphire Reserve cardholders get access to Chase Sapphire Lounges as well as access to Priority Pass lounges (including restaurants, although this benefit ends June 30 ) for themselves and up to two guests.

chase travel launch

In addition, authorized users receive the same airport lounge access on their own — though you'll pay an extra annual fee of $75 for each additional cardholder.

The Priority Pass network includes some premium lounges , both in the U.S. and abroad. In recent years, Priority Pass also added airport restaurants to its network (you can see the full list here ). American Express cut these restaurants from its Priority Pass benefit in 2019, and Capital One removed this perk as of the start of 2023, but Chase Sapphire Reserve cardholders continue to get free food (usually ~$28 per person) at all of these locations through June 30.

Free DoorDash DashPass subscription

Chase Sapphire Reserve cardholders qualify for at least a one year free DoorDash DashPass subscription when they activate by Dec. 31.

chase travel launch

In addition, you'll receive $5 per month in DoorDash credits that roll over two months before expiring, meaning you can save up to $15 to use all at once before expiration (through Dec. 31).

Lyft benefits

Chase Sapphire Reserve cardholders receive 10 points per dollar on Lyft purchases through March 2025. This is akin to getting over a 20% return on Lyft rides since TPG values Chase Ultimate Rewards points at 2.05 cents apiece.

Cardholders also receive a complimentary Lyft Pink All Access membership for two years, worth up to $199 annually. Activate by Dec. 31.

Instacart benefits

Cardholders get one year of complimentary Instacart+. Activate by July 31.

Instacart+ members also get up to $15 in statement credits for Instacart purchases each month through July.

Application fee credit for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck

Like many other premium cards, the Sapphire Reserve will reimburse you for the application fee for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck when you charge it to your card. When the Global Entry application fee rises to $120 (currently $100) in October, Chase will adjust this reimbursement accordingly . Remember that Global Entry includes PreCheck, so that's the smarter choice.

chase travel launch

This benefit is available to cardholders once every four years. If you have already enrolled, you can use the credit to cover a friend's or family member's application fee.

Visa Infinite perks

Because the Sapphire Reserve is a Visa Infinite card, you'll receive the perks that come along with the program. Highlights include primary rental car insurance , trip cancellation and delay coverage, lost luggage reimbursement , a concierge service and access to the Luxury Hotel & Resort Collection .

Earning points on the Chase Sapphire Reserve

Besides the welcome bonus, the bonus earning categories will also help build your Ultimate Rewards account. Here's an overview of what you'll earn on the card:

  • 10 points per dollar on hotels and car rentals purchased through Chase Travel
  • 10 points per dollar on dining purchases through Chase Ultimate Rewards
  • 10 points per dollar on Lyft rides (through March 31, 2025)
  • 10 points per dollar on Peloton equipment and accessory purchases (through March 2025) of $150 or more, with a maximum of 50,000 points
  • 5 points per dollar on flights purchased through Chase Travel
  • 3 points per dollar on all other travel (excluding the $300 annual travel credit) and dining purchases worldwide
  • 1 point per dollar on everything else

Note that you won't earn any points on the first $300 spent on travel purchases each cardmember year, as that will trigger the card's $300 travel credit.

chase travel launch

Once you factor in the $300 travel credit, the annual fee difference between the Sapphire Reserve and the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is $155 ($250 versus $95). That means you'd need to earn an extra 7,561 Ultimate Rewards points a year with the Reserve to come out ahead (based on TPG's valuations and without considering any other perks and benefits). You can hit that mark by spending at least $211 monthly on travel (earning at least 3 points per dollar spent) or $631 on everyday purchases (earning 1 point per dollar spent).

Redeeming points on the Chase Sapphire Reserve

The ability to redeem rewards with partners is one of the most important aspects of a travel rewards credit card, and that's definitely the case with the Sapphire Reserve. If you transfer your points to one of Chase's 14 travel partners , there's potential for some amazing redemptions. You could get a two-night stay at a Category 7 Hyatt property or a flight to Europe in Delta One business class (by transferring to Virgin Atlantic) with this bonus alone.

chase travel launch

In addition to redeeming with transfer partners, you can book travel through the Chase Travel portal with points valued at 1.5 cents each. While it's not always the best value, this is a great option for boutique hotels that don't belong to a larger brand, such as Marriott or Hyatt. It's also great for booking flights when cash prices are low.

With the Pay Yourself Back program , you can currently redeem your points at a value of 1.5 cents each at select charities through June 30. You also have the option to use your points to cover gas purchases, pet supply stores or your annual fee at a rate of 1.25 cents apiece through June 30.

If you're new to Chase Ultimate Rewards, make sure to see our guide to redeeming Chase Ultimate Rewards for maximum value .

Transferring points on the Chase Sapphire Reserve

Again, the most valuable use of your Chase Ultimate Rewards is to transfer them to one of Chase's 14 airline and hotel transfer partners, including valuable options like British Airways Executive Club , United Airlines MileagePlus and Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards .

chase travel launch

TPG director of content Summer Hull especially loves the option to transfer her points to World of Hyatt , since she can use them to book stays at resorts or city properties that would typically be out of her budget, while others of us at TPG prefer to stay at Category 1 properties to stretch our points as far as possible. No matter how you prefer to use your rewards, you'll find some great transfer options in Chase's list of partners.

Which cards compete with the Chase Sapphire Reserve?

The Sapphire Reserve's most natural competitors are another card earning the same points but with a lower annual fee and two other premium travel credit cards .

  • If you want a mid-tier card with a lower annual fee: The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is a good choice for earning Chase Ultimate Rewards points but with a lower annual fee of $95. You'll get numerous travel protections and have access to all the same hotel and airline partners as you would with the Sapphire Reserve. • If you want a premium travel card with a lower annual fee: The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card offers access to Priority Pass, Plaza Premium and Capital One lounges but has a lower annual fee of $395 (see rates and fees ). You'll also enjoy insurance protections and earn at least 2 miles per dollar on all purchases plus up to $300 in credits each year. For more information, check out our full review of the Capital One Venture X .
  • If you want more lounge access and credits: The Platinum Card® from American Express offers over $1,500 in annual credits, if you can use all of them. Plus, it offers access to Priority Pass lounges and dozens of others, including the Amex Centurion Lounge network. Enrollment is required. However, the card does have a higher annual fee of $695 (see rates and fees ). For more information, check out our full review of the Amex Platinum .

LONDON (AP) — Aer Lingus pilots said they would resume talks with the Irish airline after they launched an industrial action Wednesday that led to the cancellation of hundreds of flights and tossed the travel plans of tens of thousands into disarray.

The pilots imposed ‘’work to rule’’ actions, refusing to work overtime, accepting changes in set rosters or taking out-of-hours management requests.

The Irish Air Line Pilots’ Association said it would resume talks Thursday with Aer Lingus as the labor action continues.

An eight-hour strike is planned on Saturday.

The flag carrier of Ireland and its pilots have been locked in a bitter dispute over pay, with pilots seeking a pay increase of 24% to keep pace with inflation since their last pay raise in 2019. Aer Lingus has said it is willing to offer pay increases of 12.5% or more if “productivity and flexibility” are discussed.

Ireland’s prime minister, Simon Harris, said it is “absolutely vital” that a resolution is found.

“My challenge to the parties now is to bring that engagement forward, rather than putting people through a prolonged period of agony and chaos, and then engaging in the end anyway,” Harris said Tuesday. “This dispute will be settled the same way every dispute is settled: compromise, engagement, sitting around a table. That’s what needs to happen.”

The complete guide to Chase Sapphire airport lounges — and how to get access

C redit card issuers compete on many fronts, but one area that has been heating up the most is airport lounges . Chase is now in the game with facilities dubbed "Chase Sapphire Lounge by The Club." You'll need the right credit card to get unlimited access to these lounges, which we detail in this guide.

Currently, five lounges and one "terrace" are open; the opening dates for most other lounges have not yet been announced, with the latest announcement being for a lounge at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).

Although American Express remains the undisputed heavyweight in this arena with its Global Lounge Collection , Capital One has also made a foray into the field by opening its first airport lounge at Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) in 2021 and opening two more locations.

Here's the latest on the current and future Chase lounges, plus what to expect and how to access them.

Chase Sapphire Lounge locations

Currently, six locations are open:

  • Dulles International Airport (IAD) : Lounge opened March 2024
  • New York John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) : Lounge opened January 2024
  • New York LaGuardia Airport (LGA) : Lounge opened January 2024
  • Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) : "Terrace" opened March 2023
  • Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) : Lounge opened May 2023
  • Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) : Lounge opened October 2022

Additionally, confirmed plans call for clubs in the following five airports:

  • Las Vegas Harry Reid International Airport (LAS): Terminal 1 C gates
  • Los Angeles International Airport (LAX): Tom Bradley International Terminal
  • Philadelphia International Airport (PHL): Terminal D/E Connector
  • Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX): Terminal 4 South 1
  • San Diego International Airport (SAN): Terminal 2 West

Chase is working in partnership with Airport Dimensions to build out its lounges. Airport Dimensions currently operates over two dozen lounges worldwide, most of which are branded as " The Club " or "Club Aspire" and are largely accessible via Priority Pass membership.

Washington, DC's Dulles International Airport (IAD) lounge

The Etihad Lounge in Dulles is in Terminal A near Gate A14. Like the lounge in New York John F. Kennedy (JFK), this is an Etihad Lounge that has gotten a Chase revamp.

It's small but features two levels with ample seating and outlets, gender-neutral restrooms, a reflection room and a family room.

We'll break down how to access all of these locations below, but premium Etihad passengers can also access this lounge even without being a Chase cardholder.

New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) lounge

The Sapphire Lounge is located next to the Amex Centurion Lounge in Terminal 4. Like the location in Dulles International Airport (IAD), this space is a redesigned Etihad Lounge rather than one Chase created from scratch.

It's a bit smaller than other Sapphire Lounges but features a similar aesthetic as well as showers, a facial bar and massage chairs.

Also, like the lounge in Dulles International Airport (IAD), Etihad passengers can access this lounge without being a Chase cardholder.

Related: Chase's interesting new JFK lounge is now open — here's a tour

New York's LaGuardia Airport (LGA) lounge

This Sapphire Lounge is located right next to the Amex Centurion Lounge in Terminal B. The lounge is spacious and features large seating areas, a bar and dedicated family-oriented spaces, including a children's playroom and an arcade.

Additionally, it features Reserve Suites , Chase's new lounge-within-a-lounge concept.

Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) terrace

This is not technically a Sapphire Lounge, but it's worth highlighting here. This 5,000-square-foot space is mostly outdoors, offering excellent planespotting opportunities. However, it's not ideal during Austin's hot summers or inclement weather. Plus, it gets very loud being right next to the tarmac and planes parked at their gates.

Eighty percent of the space is outdoors, offering multiple seating types, places to relax, games and opportunities for watching planes coming and going at the airport. The Sapphire Terrace offers complimentary drinks and light bites (including grab-and-go options) and is located upstairs, near Gate 1 and the Delta Sky Club.

Again, we'll go through how to access Chase lounges below, but note that the Sapphire Terrace is unique because it is not part of Priority Pass. To access it, you must show your Chase Sapphire Reserve® .

Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) lounge

This location was the first Chase lounge to open on U.S. soil and is easily accessible for passengers departing from any terminal. It offers a spacious and well-lit environment with great views for planespotting.

The lounge features a self-service buffet, the option to order from an a la carte menu using QR codes, a full-service bar offering locally inspired cocktails, and a unique tavern with craft beer.

Additionally, the lounge provides wellness rooms with massage chairs and comfortable loungers for relaxation.

Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) lounge

The Chase Sapphire Lounge at HKG opened in October 2022, making it the first Sapphire Lounge to open. It sits in the West Hall of the International Departures area near Gate 40.

The lounge is also accessible for passengers departing from the East Hall via shuttle or a 10- to 15-minute walk.

Las Vegas' Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) location

Chase's plans to open an outpost in Las Vegas first appeared in public board documents from the Clark County Commission.

The lounge will be quite small at 4,500 square feet, especially considering how many cardholders will likely have access.

The lease is for a space just past security in the C gates in Terminal 1, primarily home to Southwest's operations in Sin City. Travelers flying from Terminal 3 would need to take a train to the C gates to access the lounge.

Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) location

Chase's most recent announcement has the issuer bringing a lounge to LAX, near the west gates of the Tom Bradley International Terminal, adjacent to Gate 148.

All terminals at LAX are connected airside (post-security), meaning any traveler theoretically could visit this lounge, although Tom Bradley Terminal will be a bit out of the way for some travelers.

The new lounge will measure around 9,000 square feet, which is on the smaller side — especially for an airport the size of LAX. Given that those are all the details Chase has provided on this new lounge, it seems to be a long way off from opening day.

Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) location

Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) announced in 2022 that they plan to welcome a huge 20,000-square-foot Sapphire Lounge. It will be located in the connector between Terminal D (Air Canada, Delta, Spirit Alaska and United Airlines) and Terminal E (Frontier, JetBlue Southwest and Spirit Airlines).

While lacking specific details, the announcement included that Chase plans to highlight Philadelphia culture by including local art, food and beverages in this location.

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) location

The Sapphire Lounge in Phoenix (PHX) will be located at the new eight-gate facility in Terminal 4. This South Concourse will be the home of Southwest Airlines. A connector bridge will link to the North Concourses, which include gates occupied by American Airlines.

According to Phoenix Airport board meeting documents, three major players competed for the right to the 3,500-square-foot lounge space: Chase with its Sapphire Lounge, Capital One and Escape (in partnership with American Express).

Competition for these types of spaces at busy airports remains fierce, as the number of applicants for this one demonstrates. (Note that two Escape lounges and a dedicated Centurion Lounge are already located at Phoenix.)

San Diego International Airport (SAN) location

In November 2021, Airport Dimensions (in partnership with Chase) was awarded the contract to build an 11,000-square-foot lounge in San Diego's Terminal 2 West.

Chase's lounge proposal beat out other key competitors, including Escape Lounge (in partnership with American Express), Plaza Premium Group and the Aspire Lounge.

The Chase Sapphire Lounge by The Club will feature "locally inspired design, local food, beverages and art partnerships," according to San Diego Airport Authority (SDAA) documents .

These same documents indicate that the space, once completed, will be located on the mezzanine level between Gates 46 and 47 and be part of a 10-year lease with a $17.6 million capital investment.

Who can access Chase Sapphire Lounges?

Chase Sapphire Reserve® , J.P. Morgan Reserve and Ritz-Carlton Credit Card (no longer available to new applicants) cardholders can access these lounges. Primary cardholders and authorized users have unlimited access to the Chase Sapphire Lounges once they activate their complimentary Priority Pass membership .

Chase Sapphire Reserve and J.P. Morgan Reserve cardholders can also bring up to two guests per card per visit for free and additional guests for $27. Those with a Ritz-Carlton Credit Card can bring unlimited guests for no additional charge.

Aside from simply pleasing cardholders, plotting out a lounge network appears more and more to be a tactic Chase needs to commit to in order to remain competitive in an increasingly crowded field of premium rewards cards , more of which are beginning to offer access to more lounges.

The information for the J.P. Morgan Reserve Card and Ritz-Carlton Credit Card has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Can I access Chase lounges without a Chase card?

All Priority Pass members can access a Chase Lounge once per calendar year and purchase guest access for a fee, even if the membership is through a different credit card. Plus, access to the Chase lounge in Hong Kong isn't restricted to Chase cardholders — anyone with a Priority Pass or Lounge Key membership has complimentary access.

Select Etihad travelers (the airline's Gold and Platinum elite members as well as those flying in business or first class on Etihad-operated flights) can visit the JFK and Dulles locations before their flights.

However, the only way to access the Austin Terrace is by holding either a Chase Sapphire Reserve or J.P. Morgan Reserve card (or as one of a cardholder's two complimentary guests).

Bottom line

For years, the network of Amex-owned and operated Centurion Lounges was the only major player in the card-run lounge space. But there's little doubt that airport lounge competition is intensifying among major credit card issuers. And with the competition pushing issuers to up their game, we're the real winners here.

Can you use buy now, pay later for travel.

chase travel launch

If you spend any time online shopping, chances are you’ve seen buy now, pay later options. As that option has increased in popularity, it’s now spread to the travel industry as well. What’s available in terms of buy now, pay later travel options? Let’s find out.

How do buy now, pay later loans work?

Buy now, pay later options may be referred to in a few different ways. For instance, some may call them point-of-sale loans or installment payment plans. Regardless of the name being used, they all work in essentially the same way.

You can think of buy now, pay later working like any other type of installment plan — usually just on a much smaller scale. It allows you to pay for your purchase with set payments over a period of time, rather than with one lump sum. How long you get to pay off your purchase varies. Some buy now, pay later options are interest-free, but come with a fixed fee.

If you like the idea of a buy now, pay later option for purchases, you might be glad to know that you might even be able to use this for travel.

Buy now, pay later options for travel

When it comes to buy now, pay later travel options, they can take a few different forms — from entire, all-inclusive vacations to something simpler like an airline ticket payment plan.

Vacation packages

There are some sites that have partnerships with hotels, airlines, cruise lines, travel agencies and vacation package providers that allow you to book your entire vacation using a buy now, pay later option. If you go this route, you could be required to pay a deposit when checking out, or you may not be required to pay anything. From there, you can choose from one of the payment plans they offer and possibly sign up for automatic payments or choose to make manual payments each month.

If you’re hoping to find some buy now, pay later flights, there could be options there, too. Some airlines offer payment plans directly, while others partner with third parties to offer this type of option. Many major airlines have a point-of-sales loan option, which could make booking a flight easier if you don’t have one lump sum ready when you book your trip.

Whether you’re planning a big international trip or taking a long weekend nearby, a hotel payment plan may interest you. Some booking sites partner with buy now, pay later lenders, which could allow you to spread your payments over the span of a few months if you choose.

If you’ve been wanting to hit the open seas, there might also be point-of-sales loan options for cruises. Many cruise lines offer payment plans themselves, though there are also third-party sites that let you buy now and pay later, as well.

Buy now, pay later with Chase

If you’re a Chase cardmember, you may already have buy now, pay later features to help manage your budget, including:

Chase Pay Over Time℠ : This allows you to break up purchases you’ve already made into budget-friendly payments and pay it off over time. Chase Pay Over Time could help you manage your expenses before you take your trip (airline tickets, hotel stays, planned excursions), as well as purchases made during your vacation.

My Chase Loan ® : Eligible cardmembers may also have an available My Chase Loan offer, which can give additional flexibility when planning out their travel budget. This feature of Chase credit cards provides a loan using a portion of your credit card’s available credit limit. The loan is deposited to your bank account in as little as one to two business days, giving you the cash you need for life’s planned and unplanned expenses. You can pay it back over time with a fixed APR and duration that works for you.

Pros and cons of buy now, pay later

While paying for a vacation over time rather than all at once might seem like a no-brainer, there are some pros and cons you should consider, including.

  • Less interest: You could end up paying less in interest if you go with a buy now, payer later travel option, compared to other forms of credit. For instance, you’ll likely pay more in interest on your credit card if you pay for travel that way, as there are options for interest-free payment plans when it comes buy now, pay later.
  • More options: Buy now, pay later could be a good option if you have poor or limited credit. While it’s unlikely to help build your credit, it might afford you an option to pay for a trip over time that you may not have had otherwise.
  • Good in emergencies: Point-of-sales loans may be helpful in the case of an emergency that your savings can’t cover or if your funds are otherwise inaccessible. For instance, if your house floods and your insurance won’t provide funding for alternative accommodations upfront, you may be able to use a buy now, pay later hotel option.
  • Could break the budget: Something that you may have thought of as beyond your budget may seem affordable when the price is given to you in smaller increments. It’s important that you work out the total (including any applicable fees or interest) you’ll pay and ensure that you can actually afford to make your payments on time until it’s paid off.
  • Might not help credit: Though point-of-sales loans feel a lot like more traditional credit lines, they might not actually help build your credit. If you have the ability, it may make more sense to use a credit card to pay over time to help ensure your on-time payments are reported to the credit bureaus. Some credit cards also offer rewards on purchases, especially for travel, that you may not get with a buy now, pay later plan.
  • May still have interest: You may still owe interest on buy now, pay later payment plans. Some lenders only add interest fees for longer loans, but these rates can be over 30%.
  • Additional fees: There can sometimes be other fees associated with these plans, too. Some lenders charge a convenience fee per installment, while others may charge fees for things like missing a payment.

Buy now, pay later travel options can be a potential way to make it a bit easier to fit a vacation into your budget. However, it’s important to read the fine print and make sure you understand any applicable interest and fees that you could potentially owe. Take the pros and cons of buy now, pay later into consideration and decide if it’s what works best for you.

Dream Chaser dropped from next Vulcan launch as ULA targets national security certification

United Launch Alliance made it official Wednesday. Sierra Space’s Dream Chaser spacecraft won’t be flying on the next Vulcan Centaur launch as ULA seeks national security certification of its new rocket.

The Vulcan first-stage powered by two Blue Origin-made BE-4 engines and the Centaur upper stage that will be used on the Certification-2 mission arrived this week to Cape Canaveral by ship and ULA plans to fly them in early September.

Originally, Dream Chaser, which is supposed to fly cargo on its first mission to the International Space Station, was lined up to fly on Cert-2, but it’s not likely to be ready by then, so ULA announced a pivot.

“We have been informed by Sierra Space that they feel they have significant risk toward making the flight dates,” said ULA President and CEO Tory Bruno on a media call Wednesday noting that the Cert-2 launch date had already been delayed from what was supposed to be before July. “They have told us that they will step aside in order to support our critical national security space missions.”

Just when Dream Chaser will fly is undetermined, but because of ULA obligations and only three Vulcan rockets expected to be complete before the end of the year, it will likely need to slip to 2025.

After Vulcan’s Cert-2 flight, ULA has two missions that are supposed to launch on Vulcan before the end of 2024 for the Space Force. Those are part of 26 missions worth $3.1 billion under National Security Space Launch (NSSL) contracts that are already two years behind schedule. Originally all 26, all to be flown by 2027, were slated for Vulcan, but delays in the rocket’s debut already forced at least one to switch to an Atlas V.

And Vulcan cannot fly any NSSL missions until ULA completes a second certification flight of the rocket. Vulcan flew for the first time in January on Cetification-1. That mission launched Astrobotic Technology’s Peregrine lunar lander.

For Cert-2, since ULA isn’t flying its planned payload, it will instead fly an inert mass simulator — basically a dummy payload, something ULA had already prepped for Cert-1 in case Astrobotic was delayed.

“It is devoid of any government funding,” Bruno said of the mission cost. “I don’t want to say the number but I’ll tell you, it’s in the high 10s of millions. It’s real money.”

The flight will also take up some scientific experiments, Bruno said, and the mission will take advantage of the Centaur upper stage’s time in space with some added maneuvers incorporated into the timeline to test the Centaur’s limits.

“You hate to waste a rocket flight, you know? It’s not a waste, because you’ve got to do the Cert-2 mission in order to work with the Space Force,” Bruno said. “We’ve been planning this for a while to be honest with you, just in case.”

The Centaur stage will then be sent to what is essentially a high-orbit space junkyard.

While the government’s certification process involves more testing and a wet dress rehearsal on the ground, which will begin in August, the launch demands will be a repeat essentially of what Vulcan achieved in January that could lead to quick approval of the rocket.

“I don’t want to answer specifically on behalf of the Space Force, but I can tell you that we’ve coordinated the plan,” Bruno said. “Because we’ve already flown once and the mission was so very clean, and they’ve been able to look at all of that data since January, in a way the report is drafted. And all they really have to do is receive the data from us with the analysis we also provide to them, and kind of go down the list and say, ‘Yep, that’s what we expected.’ … So it’ll turn pretty quickly and there is plenty of time to fly two more times before the end of the year.”

That would line up the USSF-106 and USSF-87 missions on two more Vulcan rockets that are being finished up at ULA’s factory in Decatur, Alabama.

“I’m going to ship a Vulcan in August down to the Cape, and then I’ll ship the next one right after that,” Bruno said. “So I’ll have the rockets. All I need are satellites and I should be able to fly.”

Blue Origin has already delivered the four remaining BE-4 engines for those two flights, and is now working on production of engines for its own heavy lift rocket New Glenn that is expected to make its first flight also from Cape Canaveral before the end of the year.

“Blue is now building the same engine in a slightly different configuration for their own rocket,” Bruno said. “This was planned ahead of time, and (Blue Origin CEO) Dave Limp committed to us. He’d take care of us first and then take care of that delivery, and then come back to us. So I’ll start receiving engines not very far from now, again for the manifest that occurs in (2025).”

ULA’s first NSSL mission in 2025 from Florida isn’t expected until closer to March, so Bruno expects to have all the hardware including engines in hand and ready.

“Blue has been a long hold previously because it took them just a little bit longer to get this new kind of methane-based, very large rocket motor through development,” Bruno said. “But it is through and they are wrapping up their factory right now … I have a great deal more confidence in Blue’s ability to meet our needs.”

Bruno said ULA still expects to complete eight launches in 2024. It has so far flown three: the first Vulcan flight in January, the final Delta IV Heavy in April and this month’s launch at an Atlas V with Boeing’s CFT-100 Starliner. Next up before August will be another Atlas V on the USSF-51 flight for the Space Force, the details of which have yet to be announced.

Then would follow Cert-2 and the 2 USSF missions on Vulcan, which would leave one more Atlas V rocket launch slated for 2024. That could be the first for Amazon’s Project Kuiper, with Amazon stating they expect to fly up their first of their operational satellites before the end of the year. The satellites would be the first of a 3,236- satellite constellation designed to compete with the likes of SpaceX’s Starlink.

Amazon bought nine of ULA’s remaining Atlas V rockets and so far has only flown up two test versions in late 2023. Amazon is also awaiting Vulcan rockets, on which it bought an additional 38 launches as part of flights on Blue Origin’s New Glenn and Arianespace’s new Ariane 6 in an effort to send up half of the constellation by July 31, 2026 as part of its license from the Federal Communications Commission.

With more than 70 Vulcan flights on the books, ULA has decided also to speed up construction of a second Vertical Integration Facility (VIF) at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. Originally planned for completion by June 2025, it is now expected to be finished by March.

Once online, ULA plans to keep its original VIF to support primarily government missions as well as its remaining Atlas V launches while the new VIF will be for commercial Vulcan flights. It’s also working on switching out its Atlas V launch site in California to support Vulcan launches, including two NSSL missions slated in 2025, Bruno said.

And while concerns on supply have been driving ULA in the last few years, Bruno said the company is now lined up for success.

“Fabrication is rockin’ and rollin’ and Blue is delivering on their commitments to us now having gotten through development, so feeling really good about that,” he said.
