Cheapest and Fastest Transport from Heathrow to Central London

cheapest travel from heathrow to london

Heathrow Central bus station is a short walk from Terminals 2 and 3; some routes also call at Terminals 4 and 5. This is a good option if you are staying in or near West London but otherwise you’ll need to plan another leg of your journey to get into town – with one exception.

Night buses

Buses with an ‘N’ before the number are night buses, and run between 23:40pm and 5:35am. You’re in luck if you’re on a late flight, as the N9 is the only bus route that goes straight into central London; stops include Hammersmith, Kensington, Knightsbridge, Green Park, Old Bond Street, Regent Street and Charing Cross.

Important: Transport for London (TfL) buses do not accept cash. You can use your contactless card or mobile, or buy either a Travelcard or a Visitor Oyster card . Also, on buses and trams you only need to touch in at the start of your journey; on tubes and trains you need to touch both in AND out, at the end of your journey as well (and using the same card/device – don’t touch in with your card and out with your phone) to ensure you pay the correct fare.

London buses do have a small bay opposite the central doors for wheelchair users; if this area is free, it can be used by passengers to stand with luggage or baby buggies. Buses on routes that terminate at an airport sometimes have slightly more space for luggage, but it’s very limited; a family with a suitcase each would struggle to find room. There is a shallow storage area opposite the stairs on double-decker buses designed for shopping, which could be used for smaller bags or folded buggies.

Price: £ 1.75 Pros: So cheap – also, an adventure! Ride at the front of the top deck and see the real London. Cons: Not much room for luggage or buggies, cannot be booked so may be full, and slow; also subject to delays depending on traffic. Most routes terminate just outside West London; if you get the night bus, be prepared to encounter London nightlife at its most unfiltered.

For Terminals 2 and 3, the coaches leave from Heathrow Central bus station as above; Terminals 4 and 5 have coach stops just outside the terminals.

Most coaches will have luggage storage, free wi-fi, USB charging points, comfortable seats and toilets. There are a number of different operators to choose from, including major player National Express ; check out the options here . Services go into Victoria Coach Station, which takes around an hour depending on traffic; it is then just a couple of minutes’ walk to Victoria Station’s tube and rail links.

Note: If you have people meeting you, make sure they know you are at Victoria Coach Station, NOT Victoria Bus Station – this is for TfL buses only.

Price: from £ 5.99 but likely to be closer to £ 10.00 Pros: Cheap(ish). Comfortable, good for late night/early morning arrivals. Cons: Requires either booking in advance, or waiting for an available service; price can vary considerably depending on departure time. Vulnerable to traffic-related delays.

Onward travel

It may appear pretty basic, but Victoria Coach Station is actually pretty convenient for onward travel: Bus: Bus numbers 11, 44, 170, 211, C1, C10, N11 and N44 stop right outside. Tube: Victoria Tube station is just a 300 metre walk from Victoria Coach Station; it is on the Victoria, District and Circle lines. Rail: Victoria rail station is also a 300m walk away. Taxi: There is a taxi rank immediately outside the coach station on Eccleston Place. Car: If someone is collecting you by car, there is a public car park next to the coach station on Semley Place. Parking meters are also available in nearby streets.

Underground

Piccadilly line.

cheapest travel from heathrow to london

Go underground (well, for some of the way) and take the dark blue line to zone 1. The service takes just under an hour into Central London and runs between 5am-23:30pm (with a night tube on Friday and Saturday nights); you should never have to wait more than ten minutes for a train. Stops include South Kensington, Hyde Park Corner, Leicester Square and King’s Cross; check the full details here .

Price: £ 5.60 Pros: Cheap. Feel like a proper Londoner. Convenient — regular services and no need to book. And you get to ride the famous Tube and hear the man say ‘Mind the Gap’ hundreds of times! Cons: Time dependent — avoid this option at rush hour at all costs, unless you really like playing human Tetris with your face squashed into a commuter’s armpit. Not much space for your luggage and you may have to negotiate steps.

Elizabeth Line

cheapest travel from heathrow to london

Affectionally known as the Lizzie Line (and previously aka Crossrail), we’ve listed this under tubes rather than trains but it’s a bit of a hybrid. A large part of the network outside of London runs on National Rail lines, but inside TfL zones it operates the same as a tube. The journey from Heathrow to Paddington takes less than 30 minutes and tickets start from £ 12.80 if the journey involves Zone 1. Full details are here .

Price: £ 12.80 Pros: Reasonably cheap. Travel with the locals. Convenient — fast, regular services and no need to book. Comfortable – larger, air-conditioned carriages with more luggage space. Accessible, with step-free access to platform level as a minimum. Cons: Again, avoid at rush hour.

cheapest travel from heathrow to london

Feeling rich? Get comfy in spacious carriages on the Heathrow Express, a speedy link direct from Heathrow to the middle of London. You can bag slightly cheaper tickets by booking in advance from some providers.

Price: £ 25.00 on average. Pros: Fast and direct to Paddington in just 15 minutes. Comfortable. Lots of luggage space. Cons: Expensive – most of the time. fish n' chips instead)-->

Top tip: On weekends, and if you book super early, the fare could be as low as £ 10.00 .

Taxi – London black cab

cheapest travel from heathrow to london

Price: Really variable, but plan to pay at least £ 60.00 ; more details here . Pros: Convenient. Reasonably spacious, good storage for luggage, door-to-door service. Cons: Expensive and subject to traffic delays – although black cabs can use bus lanes.

cheapest travel from heathrow to london

If you’re travelling as a couple or as a family, then the otherwise expensive option of getting Uber starts to make a lot of sense. £ 35.00 compares very favourably to the £ 50.00 plus you would pay as a family of 2 adults and 2 kids on the Heathrow Express.

Price: From £ 35.00 . Pros: Minimal waiting, door to door service. Cons: Expensive if travelling alone, a little challenging to find the pick-up point on your first trip to Heathrow. Remember to book a larger car if you are a family with a lot of luggage.

Private Transfer

If money is no object you can always book a private transfer from the airport, and enjoy searching for your name held up on one of those cards as you head out of customs. It’s definitely not the cheapest, it may not be the fastest, but it is the most boujie. Expect to pay north of £ 100.00 .

When you say 'best' do you mean cheapest way to London?

If by best you really mean the cheapest way between Heathrow and central London then it is simple, look no further, just take the London Underground.

If you are on a budget, the only reason not to take the Underground (from the airport to London direction anyway) is if you are travelling with lots of luggage, are not able to negotiate stairs and escalators with your luggage independently or have chosen your hotel in a location requiring several changes of train or a long walk from the nearest Underground.

When you say 'best' do you mean fastest and most stress free?

Heathrow to paddington.

The fastest and most stress free transfer from Heathrow to London is the dedicated airport train, the Heathrow Express . This takes just 15 minutes from Heathrow to Paddington Station running every 15 minutes.

However, if you are not staying in the Paddington , Bayswater or Marble Arch area it may be a tortoise and hare situation, where once you get to Paddington you are still a long way from your hotel. If your hotel is in the Kensington High Street , Earl's Court Road or Gloucester Road area you will be doubling back on yourself and the Underground will actually be quicker.

The Heathrow Express is fully priced, although there are cheaper fares available when you book well in advance. Something you should be able to do once you know your flight times. There is also a cheaper stopping train, the TFL Heathrow Train that runs on the same tracks, is much cheaper, but less frequent and is slightly slower.

Most convenient London hotel districts to/from Heathrow

Earl's Court Hotel area, Kensington

The most convenient central London hotel districts for Heathrow Airport are the Earl's Court and Gloucester Road areas of Kensington and Paddington.

Heathrow to Earl's Court and Gloucester Road areas of Kensington

Earl's Court is geographically the closest major hotel district to Heathrow. It has the direct Underground link taking 35-40 minutes, with trains at least every 5 minutes. Earl's Court Station is unusual in that it is in two transport zones, 1 and 2. From Heathrow, fares are cheaper than the next station along (Gloucester Road) but travelling into the centre of London Earl's Court is the same price as anywhere else in central London.

The main road out to Heathrow goes through Earl's Court so a  private car  will be the cheapest fare too as opposed to any other London hotel district.

Earl's Court has a bias towards budget hotels but also has very good value mid-range chains like  Premier Inn ,  Best Western  and  Ibis  as well as a scattering of luxury hotels including a Marriott and is fine as a place to stay. A few hundred yards down the road around the next Underground station, Gloucester Road, the bias shifts towards larger, 4-star type hotels.

Kensington hotel area guide

Kensington hotels

Paddington is the terminus of the Heathrow Express and TFL Rail Heathrow trains. These are the most stress free, fastest and most comfortable transfer options available.

Indeed if you stay at a hotel around Paddington Station, of which there are many, you can be at check-in before getting to some of Heathrow's own airport hotels.

The Heathrow Express train is a premium dedicated airport train. If you are watching your budget, the TFL Heathrow train is a less frequent stopping train but at nearly half the price.

Transfers by road from Heathrow

London Heathrow National Express bus

Once upon a time there were frequent dedicated airport buses, these quickly went out of business when the Heathrow Express train started operating, offering faster journey times not interrupted by London's traffic and the Underground was also extended to Heathrow.

There are still road transfer options into London from Heathrow available, but only a tiny minority of passengers at Heathrow use these services.

National Express Coach to London Victoria

National Express Coaches dominate scheduled long distance travel within the UK. On many of the services, Heathrow is the last stop before the London terminus. You can buy a ticket between Heathrow Airport and the London terminus at Victoria at a price that is only slightly more expensive than the Underground.

The coaches have washrooms and are very comfortable, but only really operate from the Central Bus Station between Terminals 2 and 3. If you are using Terminals 4 or 5 there is a tedious free train service to the centre of the airport.

Schedules are not optimised for London transfers, you may get 4 or 5 buses one after another then a gap of an hour at one extreme.

More about National Express buses

Hotel van shuttle services

Hotel van shuttle services common in other countries also find it almost impossible to compete with the train and Underground based alternatives at Heathrow.

Every so often someone has a go at providing a service, but in recent years none have yet been able to last that long. High prices, the slowness of the transfer and a high probability of traffic delays that every road based transfer contends with are the main reasons for failure.

More about hotel van shuttle service

Private cars & London black cab services

London's famous black cabs form the well organised taxi rank outside each terminal at Heathrow.

Private car services called mini cabs are cheaper alternatives you must book in advance. The driver will normally personally meet and greet you as you exit the customs and baggage hall.

The big problem with car based transfers are that you at the mercy of London's traffic. Weekdays getting into London from 7.30am to 10am and 5pm to 7pm and Sunday evenings can be very slow and unpredictable. If your destinations is beyond the hotel districts of Kensington and Victoria the journey time will be particularly unpredictable.

More about private cars & vans

Transfers for families & groups

If there are more than two of you it will probably be cheaper to hire a private car from Heathrow than take the Heathrow Express to Paddington, then a black cab to your hotel.

If there are more than ten of you then hiring your own bus for a private transfer starts to make economic sense in its own right, as well as being very convenient.

More about private cars & group transfers

Transfers for those travelling heavy (more than one case weighing 20kg/44lb)

Travelling with luggage on the London Underground can be a stressful experience. If you have more than one case or have one case that is heavy we would recommend that you do not use the London Underground.

How to Get from Heathrow Airport to London

cheapest travel from heathrow to london

This post covers the many options that you have to travel between London and Heathrow Airport (LHR).

We include the London Underground's Picadilly Line, the new Elizabeth Line, and Heathrow Express, as well as public buses, taxis, rideshares, and more.

When it comes to travelling to/from Heathrow Airport, it's a matter of weighing up time vs. cost.

Which option is best or fastest depends greatly on your final destination.

As local London tour guides, we all pass through Heathrow Airport quite regularly, both for personal and professional trips.

We've used each and every option listed below, so we know a thing or two about this topic.

In the video below, I, Margaret, a tour guide with Tours by Foot London , go over the pros and cons of each mode of transport.

I have sprinkled shorter snippets of this video in each section as well.

The Quick Answers

The London Underground is the cheapest way to travel, but it can take over an hour to get into central London, and even longer depending on the location of your hotel.

The Heathrow Express is "usually" the fastest way to travel, getting you to central London in 15 minutes, but it comes with a cost of £37.00 round trip.

The Elizabeth Line is often a compromise between the London Underground and the Heathrow Express, costing between £12.20 and £13.30 each way and taking 30-35 minutes.

A Black Cab or a hired car is the easiest way to travel, with convenient pick-up points, baggage assistance, and hotel drop-off, but you'll pay for it - over £100.00 in most cases.

Now, on to the full details.

How to Get from Heathrow to London?

Spread over 5 terminals, London Heathrow Airport is one of the most modern and most visited airports in the UK and the entire world.

It has nearly 200,000 passengers passing through every single day!

cheapest travel from heathrow to london

The majority of people visiting London from outside of Europe will arrive at Heathrow.

As a result of its stature and importance, there are a number of ways to travel to and from the airport.

The best method ultimately depends on the time of day, your group size, how much luggage you have, and of course your budget.

London Underground

By far the most affordable way to get to and from Heathrow Airport. Some might say also the easiest.

The Piccadilly Line runs through all Heathrow terminals as well as straight through the centre of London, offering connections with every other tube line on the London Underground network.

Use Google Maps and input the address of your final destination for directions and travel time from Heathrow .

Travel time on the Tube is roughly 45 minutes to central London.

Piccadilly line trains run out of the Heathrow Airport underground stations from Mondays to Thursdays from 5:00 to 23:00.

On Fridays and Saturday nights (or early Saturday and Sunday mornings), there is what’s called the Night Tube.

Trains run 24 hours a day roughly every 10 minutes to and from Heathrow, with the exception of Terminal 4.

In the video below, I explain the pros and cons of taking the Underground from Heathrow Airport.

Ticket prices from Zone 1 to Heathrow are £6.30 for a cash-bought paper ticket, £5.50 on an Oyster card during peak times (6:30 – 9:30 and 16:30 – 19:00), and only £3.50 on an Oyster card during off-peak times.

This is definitely the cheapest option from Heathrow to London.

Journey times vary depending on where your hotel is but from Green Park in the centre of Zoned 1 the ride to Heathrow takes just under an hour.

If you want to get your Oyster Card or travel card before you travel.

There are some things to consider, such as the potential for navigating long halls and stairs if you have to transfer between Underground trains, etc.

We have a post dedicated solely to explaining how to take the London Underground from Heathrow Airport to London.

The Heathrow Express Train

A train line that takes passengers directly from the airport to London Paddington Station in Zone 1.

The trains depart from Paddington and London Heathrow every 15 minutes.

This means that you can simply turn up and purchase a ticket for the next departing service without having to book in advance.

In this video, I explain the pros and cons of taking the Heathrow Express, my choice, especially when my company is paying :):

Paddington Station is situated on the Bakerloo, Hammersmith & City, Circle, and Metropolitan lines.

So, every area in central London is easily accessible on the London Underground Network.

First and last trains vary depending on your required terminal at Heathrow, but service generally runs from 5:15 am until just before midnight.

The ticket price for a standard return fare is £37.00 when bought at the station or online.

However, if you purchase your tickets more than 90 days in advance online you can get up to 75% off!

For more details, read our full post on taking the Heathrow Express to Paddington Station .

The Elizabeth Line

A train service taking passengers from Heathrow to Paddington Station in London’s Zone 1.

Officially opened in 2022, the new Elizabeth Line connects Heathrow Airport with central London and beyond.

There are six trains an hour departing from Heathrow Terminals 2&3 - but only four an hour from Terminal 4, and two an hour from Terminal 5.

You can use your Oyster card and expect to pay between £12.20 and £13.30 for a one way journey.

The Elizabeth Line, unlike The Heathrow Express, makes a number of stops along the journey.

Passengers can embark or alight at any of these stations, including Ealing Broadway which is on the Central and District Lines, which may work better for your connections.

And, in this video, I go over the pros and cons of taking the Elizabeth Line.

Read our full post with tips on taking the Elizabeth Line .

National Express Coach

A coach service that runs throughout the day and night can be boarded from a number of locations (Marble Arch, Victoria Station, Baker Street, etc.) within central London.

national express from heathrow airport

Tickets are, on average, around £10.50 one-way.

The journey time is around 40 minutes to an hour - but can last as long as 2 hours depending on traffic and time of travel.

Also consider the fact that there are restrictions on the amount, size, and weight of luggage you can take onto a National Express bus.

So, make sure you fall within the guidelines before you travel!

London Black Cabs

Maybe you just want an iconic ride from the airport to your hotel!

There is a taxi rank right outside each terminal so it's very easy to simply collect your bags, and get into a cab.

But note that this will cost you - a cab ride into central London can be well over £100.00 one way.

For peace of mind, consider booking your pick up/drop off with us using our friends at London Historical Taxi Tours.

You can even combine your airport journey with a guided tour!

These taxis provide professional, competitive, and reliable airport transfer services to and from Gatwick, Heathrow, Stanstead, Luton, and London City Airport.

They can also provide a “meet and greet” service at the airport. What we quote you is what you pay!

Just e-mail us for a quote.

Ride Shares

There are a number of ride-share apps you can download, like Uber or Bolt .

These services give you the option of travelling on your own or sharing the journey with passengers going in the same direction, for a cheaper rate.

Take note that the drivers for these services are NOT permitted to pick up their guests at the taxi ranks outside the airport.

So, you will need to make your way to a designated pick-up area (such as a short-stay car park) to meet your car.

You'll be paying a base rate of £10.00, then around £1.00 - £1.28 per mile and 0.12p a minute.

For a journey into the middle of town, assuming there is no traffic, you'll be paying somewhere above or below £50.00 on average.

Note that if you are travelling during rush hour, your journey can last up to two hours depending on your end location.

Shared Van Shuttle Services

These services will see you taking a ride on a van to your hotel, along with other passengers going in the same direction.

All guests are individually dropped off at their hotels which means it can add some time to your journey.

However, the drivers will meet you inside the airport terminal which makes it a stress-free option.

Note that these shuttles usually have strict luggage policies to fit everybody's cases on board so make sure you are within the limits before you travel!

These usually run £15 - £25 per person, so it's definitely within budget, provided you have the extra time and not too much luggage!

Check out GO Airport Shuttle , JayRide , or Shuttle Direct .

If you'd rather avoid public transportation, the GO Airport Shuttle offers reliable 24/7 airport shuttles and car service from Heathrow (and other London) airports.

With upfront pricing, you'll know exactly how much it will cost before you hop in!

With the number of cheaper flights that take off/land outside of public transportation hours, GO Airport Shuttle is a great option for midnight rides

Also operated by National Express, HotelHoppa is an option for visitors who are staying at hotels near Heathrow Airport.

A bus service that costs £10.50 return, HotelHoppa services run from ‘first thing in the morning to last thing at night.’

The London Transport Pass

If you’re interested in a private transfer from the airport to London city center, this is an excellent alternative to some of the other options on our list.

In addition to covering the costs of a private transfer, the London Transport Pass also includes a 1-Day Travelcard (£18+) at no extra cost.

At a cost of only £37 per pass, that means you’re really only paying £19 for the private transfer. Given that this service typically costs at least £25-£45, that’s a pretty good deal!

Visitors who plan to travel around the city for at least one day while in London may find that the Travelcard is quite useful.

That said, if you’re curious about the different options for public transport, please read our post about the Oyster Card and Travelcards.

Heathrow Airport to London by Underground (Tube)

Heathrow airport has three underground stations connected to the London Underground network at the western branch of the Piccadilly Line.

The underground (the tube) is the cheapest, and in most cases, the most convenient way of travelling to central London from Heathrow airport.

Heathrow airport underground stations

Terminal 4 and Terminal 5 each have their own underground station. Terminals 2 and 3 share an underground station known as ‘Heathrow Terminals 2 & 3’. (Terminal 1 is now closed).

Underground stations are clearly signposted from the arrival hall of each terminal.

Heathrow Terminals 2 & 3 underground station is a 4 minute walk from Terminal 2.

Heathrow Terminals 2 &3 station is a 5 minute walk from Terminal 3. There are moving walkways for most of this route.

Terminal 4 has its own underground station.

Terminal 5 has its own underground station.

Heathrow to central London ticket prices

Single tickets.

  • The standard single underground ticket from Heathrow airport to central London (zone 1) is  £6.70 for adults.
  • If you use a Pay as you go Oyster card (the card costs £7 ) or a contactless debit/credit card , the single fare to central London (zone 1) is £5.60 . This is the fare whether you travel at peak or off-peak times. .

Daily passes including the underground from Heathrow

If you plan to travel into central London and use public transport for the rest of the day there are three options:

Pay as you go Oyster

  • If you add more money to your Oyster card, the maximum amount deducted from your card is  £15.60 for one-day travel. This is the zone 1–6 one-day cap.

Contactless debit/credit card

  • £15.60 is the maximum amount deducted from your card for one-day travel (the ‘daily cap’).

One Day Travelcard

If you don’t have a contactless card and don’t want an Oyster card, you can buy a One Day Travelcard. This is a paper ticket.

  • For travel after 9.30am Monday to Friday & all day Saturday & Sunday – a zone 1–6 One Day Travelcard is  £15.90 .
  • For travel between 6.30am–9.30am Monday–Friday – a zone 1–6 One Day Travelcard is  £22.60 .

Weekly Travelcards are also available.

Buying underground tickets, Oyster cards or Travelcards

Terminal 2 or 3.

  • The ticket machines inside Heathrow Terminals 1,2,3 underground station
  • Ticket machines at the end of the moving walkway from Terminal 3 to Heathrow Terminal 1,2,3 underground station (debit and credit cards only)
  • London Transport Visitor Centre , opposite the entrance to Heathrow Terminals 1,2,3 underground station.
  • Terminal 4 underground station ticket machines
  • The ticket office in Terminal 5 underground station
  • There are underground ticket machines in Terminal 5 arrivals hall and in the underground station.

Piccadilly line times

Trains leave for central London every 5–10 minutes. For the full timetable see the TfL website .

If your flight arrives too late to take the underground between Sunday evening and Thursday evening and don’t want to take a taxi, the night bus N9 runs through the night to central London. If you arrive late on Friday or Saturday, there’s the Night Tube.

The Night Tube

There is a 24-hour service on the Piccadilly line on Friday night/Saturday morning and Saturday night/Sunday morning . It runs from Heathrow Terminals 1,2,3 and Terminal 5 underground stations.

There is no Night Tube from Terminal 4.

How long does it take from Heathrow to central London?

It takes approximately 40–60 minutes to central London.

Approximate times from Heathrow Terminals 1,2,3 to central London underground stations:

Trains to/from Terminal 5 take 5 minutes longer.

Use Transport for London’s journey planner to plan your journey. Deselect ‘National Rail’, otherwise results will include the more expensive Heathrow Express or Elizabeth line trains.

Or take a look at the underground map .

Or view other journey planner options

Heathrow to Victoria by underground

If you’re travelling to Victoria from Heathrow, you need to change from the Piccadilly line to the District line. With luggage, it’s easier to do this at Hammersmith rather than South Kensington station, which has escalators and stairs.

At Hammersmith, Piccadilly line trains stop at platform 3. Get off the train and walk to platform 4, literally a few steps to the other side of the same platform. From here take the District line to Victoria. The destination on the front of the train should say ‘Upminster’.

Changing between the Piccadilly and District line at Hammersmith station

When to avoid the underground

The underground might be worth avoiding if you have mobility issues or a lot of luggage.

Mobility issues

Most underground stations in central London have escalators and some have stairs, but not all have lifts. If you want to avoid using stairs, TfL produce a map of stations with lifts and escalators (pdf) .

Arriving in central London during the rush hour

If you take the underground from Heathrow airport between 6.00am–7.45am or 4.30pm–5.45pm Monday–Friday, by the time you reach central London the trains and platforms will be crowded. It can be difficult getting off the train with a lot of luggage.

It’s not too bad with luggage that’s easily carried. With heavy bags or several suitcases, you might want to wait a while at the airport or consider the coach or the train instead.

How to Get from Heathrow to London

How to get from Heathrow to London

How you choose to get from Heathrow to London will depend on where in the capital you wish to end up, your personal preferences, and the volume of baggage you need to move.

Handling 80-million passengers every year, arriving and departing in roughly equal numbers, Heathrow airport has an excellent and varied transport network, to ensure passengers can arrive and leave as quickly and efficiently as possible.

London Heathrow is located 15 miles west of Central London and is the UK’s busiest airport. With its four terminals and two runways, it handles over 1250 air transport movements on any given day.

Airlines from 84 countries serve over 200 destinations worldwide from London Heathrow, and it is rated one of the safest airports in the world.

In this blog, to help you decide the best way to get from Heathrow to London, we’ve listed all the transport options available by road or rail, and how they might suit your particular needs.

TIP: Get the   London City Pass   and save time and money . Enjoy access to more than 80 of London’s top attractions, tours, and museums and a hop-on hop-off bus tour

How to get from Heathrow to London

1. the heathrow express, your fastest route to get from heathrow to london.

For over 20 years, the Heathrow Express has been ferrying 16,000 visitors a day wanting to get from Heathrow to London Paddington in as short a time as possible .

Heathrow Express terminals are located in Heathrow terminals 2, 3 and 5 . From terminal 4, a free shuttle operates to take you to a connection terminal in around four minutes.

Operating 150 services a day from 5.17am until midnight , it is one of the most successful high-speed airport to city routes in the world, with the journey from Heathrow to Paddington Station in Central London taking just 15 minutes .

Single ticket costs £25 but significant savings of up 75% can be made if you pre-book your seats , bringing the cost of the cheapest seats down to under £6/person .

Are you travelling with family? Children under 15 travel free with a paying adult or on production of a valid flight ticket or boarding pass.

Depending on your final destination from Paddington, you can then catch a Tube (Underground), bus or taxi from the station to complete the journey to your hotel.

2. Elizabeth Line, cheaper than Heathrow Express

Initially called Heathrow Connect, in 2018 the system was transferred to Transport for London, and utilised to help the thousands employed at Heathrow and Central London commute to work without needing a car.

Using the same terminals and rail-road as the Heathrow Express, Elizabeth Line stops at most stations along the route , and consequently, journey times to get from Heathrow to London Paddington are double, at around 30 minutes.

The service also runs every 30 minutes instead of every 15 minutes on the Express, but to compensate, you will find fares on Elizabeth Line are generally cheaper than on the Express .

The Elizabeth Line stops at Heathrow Central for terminals 2 and 3 and terminates at terminal 5, with a free shuttle to and from terminal 4.

The service starts running at 5.15am until midnight and from Heathrow Terminal 5, stops at Heathrow terminals 3 and 2, Hayes and Harlington, Southall, Hanwell, West Ealing, Ealing Broadway, Acton Main Line and London Paddington.

Being part of the integrated London Transport System, tickets for the Heathrow Express, Elizabeth Line and London Underground are interchangeable, and you can use Oyster cards, zone 6 travelcards, paper tickets or contactless payments.

Single ticket costs £12.80 , less than half the price of the Heathrow Express.

3. London underground, the cheapest way to get from Heathrow to London

London’s underground system is a frequent, fast and cheap way to get from Heathrow to London Central.

The airport is served by three Tube stations on the Piccadilly Line, at terminals 2 and 3, terminal 4 and terminal 5.

With trains running every few minutes from 5.12am to 11.45pm, you can plan your route anywhere across Central London, alighting at the station nearest to your final destination.

The complete journey to Piccadilly Circus from Heathrow takes around 50 minutes . Due to high hotel density, two of the more popular routes from Heathrow to London are Heathrow to Kings Cross and Heathrow to Victoria, changing from the District Line.

However, if you’ve never used the London Underground before, and are travelling with large cases or young children, an alternative mode of transport may be the better option.

The Underground can get horrendously overcrowded, especially during rush hour. The additional stress of trying to change stations while lugging large cases and small children around is probably the last thing you need after a long incoming flight.

Consider the Heathrow Express, The Elizabeth Line, or road transport to get to your hotel, and use the Tube when travelling light, out and about sightseeing.

To keep costs down, you can order an Oyster Card to be delivered to your home before your journey, or purchase one from Heathrow Airport’s Tube stations.

Single ticket costs £6, with Oyster Card in Peak hours costs £5.30 Monday to Friday from 0630 to 0930 and £3.30 at all other times including public holidays.

4. National Express Coach, good if your final destination is in the Victoria or Earl’s Court areas

Using luxury coaches with air conditioning, onboard WC and washing facilities, National Express are the cheapest transfer option after the London Underground to get from Heathrow to London Victoria Coach Station or Earl’s Court.

The journey from Heathrow to Victoria Station will typically take between 50 and 90 minutes, depending on travelling time and traffic conditions, and one-way tickets start from around £6.

However, you may need to deal with a degree of inconvenience to benefit from the lower travel cost. National Express is not a dedicated Heathrow Airport service, so consequently, coach timetables are not tied in with flight arrival and departure times.

This means you may have to wait 30 minutes before continuing your onward journey to London. Also, save for a limited number of routes, National Express uses only Heathrow’s central bus station, near terminals 2 and 3 .

If you arrive at terminals 4 or 5, you have the added inconvenience of getting to the main bus station for your coach.

Nonetheless, if your final destination is in the Victoria or Earl’s Court areas, and the possible additional waiting time is not an issue, National Express is well worth considering.

More info: https://www.nationalexpress.com/

5. Black Cab, comfortable but expensive way to get from Heathrow to London

London’s Black Cabs could fit the bill if you’re happy to sort out ongoing transport after landing at Heathrow.

Outside Heathrow’s four terminals , you will find organised taxi ranks, with black cabs and airport authorised taxis waiting to whisk you to your chosen hotel, depending on traffic, of course.

Every licensed black cab driver will have completed ‘the knowledge’, meaning they have passed an exam that requires them to know every street and road around the city and Greater London, and how to get there quickly and safely.

Average cab journey times into London can be anything from 45 minutes to 90 minutes , depending on destination, time of day, and traffic volume.

Black cab fares typically range from £50 to £100, again depending on destination, time of day and traffic, and they are registered to carry a maximum of five passengers and four large suitcases.

More info: https://www.heathrow.com/transport-and-directions/by-taxi-or-mini-cab

6. Mini-cab, cheaper than black cabs

While it is only airport authorised Black Cabs allowed to tout for business on Heathrow’s taxi ranks, an often cheaper alternative is to pre-book an airport approved mini-cab .

WeKnow Private Hire is one such Heathrow approved company, and has desks on all Heathrow’s arrival concourses.

Depending on the size of your party, they will organise the car and arrange for the driver to meet and greet you at arrivals. Mini-cabs are usually cheaper than London Black Cabs , and drivers have an excellent knowledge of Central London and the suburbs.

With WeKnow, you also get the benefit of a fixed price . The cost quoted when you book is what you pay. No continuously ticking meters or additions for traffic hold-ups or route changes due to road works or accidents.

7. Shared shuttle, convenient and affordable way to get from Heathrow to your accommodation

An increasingly popular way to continue your journey from the airport to the hotel is a shared shuttle . Booked online, your professional driver will meet you, and others sharing the same vehicle, at a designated pick-up spot convenient to all passengers.

Available year-round, twenty-four hours a day, it means the cost of transferring from airport to hotel is shared by all travelling in the same vehicle.

More info: Shared shuttle from Heathrow

8. Car, NOT an option we would recommend to get from Heathrow to London

Car Hire to get from Heathrow to London has always been a popular option with visitors familiar with British roads, who need a car for business, or who want to explore not just Central London, but also visit attractions outside the city.

However, it is not an option we would recommend for the faint-hearted.

With the large number of Car Hire companies operating in the UK, a little comparison searching before your trip is well worth the effort to get the best prices, and have your vehicle booked and waiting at the airport when you arrive.

All London Heathrow terminals have well-signed car hire desks on the arrivals concourse, where you produce your documents and collect your vehicle. Most UK car hire companies accept drivers over the age of 22, although many apply a surcharge for drivers under 25.

The majority of hire cars these days come equipped with a sat-nav, and it would appear a relatively straight-forward process to load up your vehicle, input your starting point and final destination, and let AI do the rest.

The Route: the first part of your journey is reasonably easy.

  • From Heathrow, follow the signs and head for the Great South-West Road
  • Turn left onto Parkway (A312)
  • Follow the Parkway to the Cranford Parkway Interchange and look for the M4 Central London signs
  • Merge with the M4
  • Stay on the M4 until it becomes the A4, Great West Road.
  • From here on, you are already around the Central London area, and your route will depend on your chosen destination.
  • If you follow the A4 into town, you will pass through Westminster to Piccadilly, Constitution Hill, Knightsbridge and The Mall. Many of these roads are now toll roads.

The downside. London is one of the most car congested cities in the world. Parking is a major problem , and don’t just assume your hotel has its own car park. Not all do, and parking charges can be horrendous. Be sure to check when booking.

Congestion charges also apply to many of Central London’s main roads, adding further to the cost of your car hire charges.

In addition, almost overnight, lanes of traffic cones can appear along with ‘Road Closed’ and ‘Detour’ signs, which can triple journey times and push stress levels through the roof.

Nonetheless, if a hire car remains your preferred option, you can compare prices here .

Why bother? Consider instead a professional driver, who drives these routes every day and will ferry you, the family and your luggage safely to your hotel.

9. To summarise the best way to get from Heathrow to London

If time is the most important consideration when deciding how to get from Heathrow to London Central, the Heathrow Express or TfL are the most attractive options.

If you’re a young backpacker, where cost is the biggest consideration , then purchase an Oyster card, and put London’s Underground at the top of the list.

If you are travelling with young children or large amounts of baggage, you may prefer to use road transport, but bear in mind the following. National Express will drop you at either Earl’s Court or Victoria Station, so you will need to get from there to your hotel.

Taxis and private hire vehicles will drop you directly at your hotel , where you can find the café and enjoy that much needed mug of coffee.

Finally, pre-booking online attracts considerable discounts, especially if travelling as a family or large group, so be sure to check all your options before starting your journey.

Best Way to Get from Heathrow to London

Heathrow Airport is London’s busiest, yet it is located 16 miles outside the city.  You don’t want to waste your vacation time or dollars on traveling from London’s Heathrow to Central London.

There are several different transportation options you can choose from Heathrow. It can be confusing, so in this post, I will explain the different alternatives, their pros and cons, and pricing to help you decide the best way to get from Heathrow to London .

It’s a good idea to decide how to get from Heathrow to London in advance.  Planning ahead allows you to take advantage of promotional prices.  You can save money by booking your way from Heathrow to London in advance.  Plus, it’s one less thing to worry about when you are tired after your flight.

If you are planning a trip, you also might find my free printable travel checklist helpful.

In the table below, I summarize the different ways that you can get to London from Heathrow Airport.

*Prices noted are in GBP and are the discounted rates you can get online.  If you wait to purchase tickets once you get to Heathrow, prices will be higher.

Options for Traveling from Heathrow to Central London

There are five different ways you can get to London from Heathrow.  I want to share my personal thoughts on the LHR transportation options based on my countless trips to London.  All have their own pros and cons. There is not necessarily one best way from Heathrow to London, it depends on your priorities.

When I first started traveling to London for work, my favorite transport option was the Heathrow Express .  My work was footing the bill, so I wasn’t worried about the cost.  If you are paying for the ticket yourself, it’s debatable if the Heathrow Express is worth the extra money especially with the new Elizabeth tube line.

It’s 15 minutes from Heathrow Airport to Paddington Station and the train runs every 15 minutes.  I was also impressed that the trains were so modern, comfortable, and had free wifi (which wasn’t that common in those days!).

Since I would be traveling by myself with a lot of luggage, I appreciated that the Heathrow Express trains had step-free access.  Once I got to Paddington, I would grab a taxi to my office on the Strand so that I would not have to deal with stairs on the tube.  The taxi would be another £25-£30.

If you decide to take the Heathrow Express, it’s easy to find your way.  After you get your bags, you will see signs directing you to the Heathrow Express (and several people selling Heathrow Express tickets ).

The train has both First and Standard Class so make sure you get on the right car based on the ticket you purchased. The conductor will check your tickets during the journey on the train from Heathrow to London.

Once you arrive at Paddington Station, you can follow the signs to transfer to the tube or grab a taxi. You can connect to the Bakerloo, Circle, Hammersmith & City, and District lines.

Save money by purchasing your Heathrow Express tickets online in advance.  You can now use a Visitor Oyster Card or an Oyster Card to pay for the Heathrow Express but it will be more expensive than buying in advance.  If you want to upgrade to first class, you can pay the difference in fare with an Oyster Card too.

Note: For Terminals 4 & 5, allow a few extra minutes for the Heathrow Express.

Click here to get more information on the Heathrow Express.

Now, when I travel to and from Heathrow I use the tube.  The London Underground is definitely the cheapest way to get from Heathrow to Central London.  Plus, you are not limited by one station like when you take the Heathrow Express or the National Express Bus.

The Piccadilly tube line (dark blue on the tube map) and the new Elizabeth Line (purple on the tube map) go straight to Heathrow, but you can transfer along the way if you need to and reach the 270 different stations across London.  The Elizabeth Line is the fastest option because it only has a few stops in central London.  It’s also a more pleasant ride as all the trains are brand new and all the stations are step free.

It’s also nice that you don’t have to deal with any car traffic but there are a lot of stops on the Picadilly London Underground line and you may have to deal with stairs.  For the amount of money you save, I think the minor hassle is worth it. If you pack light , it will make the journey easier.

You are probably wondering how much a journey from Heathrow to Central London costs on the tube.  Unfortunately, it is not a simple answer. The pricing for the tube is not as simple as it is for the NYC Subway.  There are several different zones, plus peak and off-peak pricing.  Also, there is a surcharge for taking the Elizabeth Line from Heathrow.

If that’s not confusing enough, as a visitor you have four options for how to buy your tickets:

Buy one single or round trip journey – This is the most straight-forward way and ideal if this is the only time you will be using the tube.  If you plan on staying in London for longer, it is probably not the best value option.

Buy a Visitor Oyster Card – The Visitor Oyster Card gives you access to the cheapest rates on the tube.  You can also use the Oyster Card to travel on DLR, Bus, MBNA Thames Clipper, Emirates Air Line, and more.  This card must be ordered online before you arrive in London, and then gets delivered to your address (worldwide).  You purchase it with a balance and can top up as needed. It also comes with over 40 special discounts. Note: There is also an option to purchase a Visitor Oyster Card when you buy the London Pass .

Buy an Oyster Card at Heathrow Airport – You can also buy an oyster card at the Heathrow Underground Stations.  This gives you access to the same rates as the Visitor Oyster Card, but does not have the other special discounts.

Pay as You Go with Contactless – With this option you can get the save discounted rates as the oyster card.  You basically use your credit card (or phone if using Apple or Google Pay) like you would an oyster card.  Unfortunately, this does not work for some cards issued outside the UK.  Get more information about this payment method here .

Taking the Tube from Heathrow to London

If you are staying in London, you will be using the tube to get around the city.  Most of the time it is the fastest and most efficient way.

The most complicated thing about the London Underground is the pricing because it varies depending on how far you are going, your payment method, and the time of day.  Don’t worry it’s not difficult to use. It’s well sign-posted and there is staff to answer any questions that you may have.

You can use Google Maps to figure out the best route.  Be sure to download an offline map so you can use it when you don’t have access to data. Also, remember to keep your card or ticket throughout the journey as you will need it to exit the station.

National Express runs a direct bus from London Heathrow to London Victoria Station.  During peak times there are buses about every 15 minutes, but if you arrive during a quieter time, the bus runs about once every hour.  From Victoria station, you can transfer to the Victoria, District, or Circle tube lines or catch a taxi to get to your final destination if needed.

The journey may take a while, but it is a cheap option and you don’t have to worry about carrying your luggage on the stairs.  The coaches feature comfortable leather seats, air conditioning, and bathrooms.

You can save up to 40% if you buy online versus when you arrive at Heathrow.

The bus from Heathrow Airport takes you to Victoria Station

In general, I don’t recommend taking a taxi from Heathrow Airport to Central London.  It will be expensive and it won’t be fast.

Depending on the time you arrive, there could be heavy traffic.  However, if you are traveling with a small group it could be cheaper than some of the other Heathrow to London options (like Heathrow Express ) where you need to pay for a ticket for each person.

I can see how taking a taxi from LHR to central London would be tempting even if you are traveling alone.  You don’t have to worry about getting lost or carrying your bag upstairs but there are better ways.  If you are not worried about the cost, but have a lot of luggage, take the Heathrow Express to Paddington and grab a taxi there to your final destination.

cheapest travel from heathrow to london

I recommend using Suntransfers , who o ffer high-quality door-to-door transfers at reasonable prices. You can choose either a car or a van, depending on your preference.   If your flight is delayed, you don’t have to worry because the price quoted includes unlimited waiting time.  If plans change, it’s free to cancel up to 48 hours in advance (or for a small fee you can add the option to cancel up to the time of your transfer).  They don’t charge fees for using credit cards and tolls and gratuities are included in the price.

Click here to check price for private taxis or vans from Heathrow Airport.

Yes, you can take an uber from Heathrow Airport to London, but I would not recommend it.  You may remember that Transport for London threatened to not renew Uber’s license to operate because of safety concerns and other issues.  The courts recommended Uber receive a 15-month probationary license in June 2018.

Another reason that worries me about using an Uber is the variable surge pricing.  Depending on the time that you land and the demand for rides, it could cost you anywhere from £ 39 to £ 80.  To me, I would prefer to book a taxi online in advance and know how much it will cost me.

If you do decide to take an Uber at Heathrow, there is one other thing that I want to warn you about.  Drivers may call and ask you where you are going.  They do this so they can decide if that is somewhere they want to go.  That is against Uber policies.  Drivers may also try to stall so that you cancel and they receive a cancellation fee.  You can read about one example of this happening here .

Personally, I prefer taking the tube because it is cheap and doesn’t take too long.  Yes, it is a pain having to carry luggage up and down stairs, but it’s not that bad. There have even been a few times that a friendly stranger has offered to help.

If you are on a tight budget and don’t want to deal with carrying your luggage through the Underground, then I would recommend taking the bus and allowing extra time.  Keep in mind the National Express Bus goes to Victoria Station. You may still need to take the tube, city bus, or taxi to get to your final destination.

If you are not worried about the cost, Heathrow Express is the fastest option.  The Heathrow Express has step-free access so bags won’t be a problem. Once you get to Paddington, you can grab a cab to your final destination or transfer to the tube.

Transferring from Heathrow to Other London Airports

If London is not your final destination and you need to transfer to one of the other London area airports, there are several options depending on where you want to go. Allow extra time as the other airports are some distance away.

For those that are looking for the easiest, most convenient option, you can always book a car with Suntransfers . If you are looking to use public transportation, I will go over the best options below.

London City Airport is located on the other side (east) of London from Heathrow Airport so if you need to transfer between the two allow some time.  London City Airport is on the tube network but not the same line as Heathrow.

I think the best way to travel to London City Airport on the tube.  It’s the cheapest option, but you will have to change trains twice.  First, take the Piccadilly Line to Green Park, then switch to the Jubilee Line to Canning Town, from there you can take the DLR to London City Airport.

If you want to shave a little bit of time off the journey, you can take the Heathrow Express or Elizabeth Line, then switch to the tube once you get to Paddington.  From Paddington take the Bakerloo Line to Baker Street, then switch to the Jubilee Line to Canning Town, and then the DLR to London City Airport. The Heathrow Express is more expensive than the tube but you can save money by purchasing tickets in advance here.

You could also take a taxi or car service (like Suntransfers ) but this will be expensive and since you have to drive through central London traffic delays are likely.  If you have a lot of luggage and a bit of extra time, it may be worth it to avoid all the changes on the underground.

National Express offers a direct bus from Heathrow to Gatwick . This only takes about 75 minutes depending on traffic.  Prices start at £25.  Click here for more information .

The bus is your best option.  If you want to take the train between the two airports, it would involve multiple changes and take longer.

It’s 65 miles between London Stansted and Heathrow airports.  Avoid booking travel that requires you to make that journey if you can.  If you can’t avoid it, I recommend allowing at least six hours between flights so that you have enough time to travel from Heathrow to Stansted.

When I had travel plans that had me flying into Heathrow and out of Stansted, I decided to add a night in London to make it easier. That way I also wouldn’t have to worry if my flight was delayed.

The only direct option is bus service provided by National Express.  The buses are similar to the ones used for the Heathrow to London service, but this journey will take at least two hours.  Keep in mind that if you are flying into Heathrow Terminals 4 or 5 the bus could take up to 30 minutes longer than Terminals 2 or 3.  Traffic can also cause delays especially on Sunday afternoons and rush hour during the week. You can save money buying a ticket in advance.  Check schedule and pricing here .

When you go back to Heathrow to catch your flight, you have the same options to choose from but you need to be more conscious of time.  I don’t want you to miss your flight. Remember the traffic can be unpredictable and not just during rush hour. The tube is more reliable but can also have delays.

Once on my way to Heathrow on the underground, the train in front of me broke down.  It caused a 30-minute delay but I still made my flight. It’s better to allow extra time and relax in the airport lounge or bar than to be stressing about missing your flight (or even worse actually miss your flight)!

Note: If you are taking the tube back to Heathrow, make sure to check the final destination for the train because not all the Picadilly or Elizabeth Line trains go to Heathrow.  There are two train options – one that goes to Terminals 1,2,3&5 and another for Terminal 4.  If you take a train that is going to the wrong terminals, switch at Hounslow West.

Which Heathrow transport option do you prefer? If you have any questions about getting from Heathrow to London, you can leave it in the comments and I will get back to you.

  • Less luggage will make your journey easier!
  • The Heathrow Express is the faster option but you can save money by taking the tube or bus .
  • Visitors have three options to buy tube tickets: Single Journey , Visitor Oyster Card , or London Travelcard .
  • Instead of gettting a taxi at LHR, book a car service from Heathrow Airport with Suntransfers .
  • Allow extra time when going back to Heathrow so that you don’t miss your flight.

Here are 19 of the cheapest destinations to fly to from London's airports

It's great when you've got money to spare and you're willing to spend on a far-flung destination for a once-in-a-lifetime trip, or shell out for a luxury flight experience in a costly first class cabin. Sometimes, though, you just want a cheap getaway that won't break the bank (or dip into your Avios).

That's why we've taken a look at some of the cheapest destinations you can fly to from five of London's airports: Gatwick (LGW) , Heathrow (LHR) , Stansted (STN) , City (LCY) and Luton (LTN) . We've looked for destinations that consistently pop up with low (starting) return fares from each airport, by scouring the flights listed on Skyscanner from December 2022 to November 2023.

Note: Southend (SEN) isn't included in this list, as its starting prices weren't listed on Skyscanner.

Is this an exact science? Err, not really. Flight prices go up and down constantly, new routes are added, and some flights for later in 2023 may not yet be for sale. And of course, starting prices are just that: starting prices. The definition of 'cheapest' varies by airport, too – City's cheapest flights, for example, are more expensive than the options from budget havens Stansted and Luton (served by the likes of Ryanair and Wizz Air).

Of course, if you start searching, you'll find plenty more affordable flights for countless destinations for your chosen airport or month of travel. Think of this piece as inspiration – a starting point – if you're looking for one of the cheapest destinations to reach from London.

Let's take a look...

London Gatwick (LGW)

Milan Old Town

Milan, Italy

The Italian fashion capital popped up in the search time and time again, with prices starting from £21 return (flying Wizz Air). Low fares popped up over eight months of the year, starting from the £20s to £60s mark, though obviously it's on the cheaper side in winter.

Still, it doesn't need to be scorching to soak up the city's art (including Leonardo Da Vinci's The Last Supper), culture, famous shopping, or to admire the Duomo di Milano up close. Day trips to Bergamo, Verona, and even Lake Como are all possible, meaning its a useful starting point for further exploration.

Malaga, Spain

From £22 return, the Andalusian city of Malaga proved to be one of the cheapest 'from London' destinations. Starting prices ranged from £23 to £42 over 10 months of the year when we looked, so you should be able to bag a bargain flight from Gatwick without much trouble – flying a mix of either Wizz Air, Vueling, BA or easyJet.

Weather-wise, you're looking at average highs of 25C in July and August, and 13C in December and January, to London's respective 16C and 7C/5C (according to Holiday Weather ). In addition to the tapas and nightlife the city is known for, you'll have the Costa del Sol's beautiful beaches at your feet. If you like to rove museums, you'll like it here too – there's even one devoted to Picasso, who was born there.

Faro, Portugal

Portuguese gem Faro was also consistently cheap over 10 months, with fares starting from £28 in winter and heading into the £30 to £50 region. For the cheapest fares, you'll likely fly Wizz Air both ways, or Wizz Air and easyJet.

As the capital of the Algarve, you can land and drive to along the coast relaxing holiday at the beach – stunning Albufeira is just 40 minutes away by car – or enjoy a low-key city stay with strolls through cobbled streets and the city's charming Old Town. Positioned near the tip of southern Europe, you're also looking at pleasant weather all year round, with mild winters to shake off the U.K. cold.

Bilbao, Spain

Over five months, we spotted low fares to the port city of Bilbao in northern Spain, starting from as low as £36 to £52. You'll be flying Vueling.

Perhaps Bilbao is best known for the attention-grabbing Guggenheim Museum, famed just as much for its titanium Frank Gehry architecture as it is for the contemporary art it houses. Still, there's more to the city than this: green space, great music, a love of football, fine dining, the list goes on. It's also part of the Basque Country, known for its stunning stretches of coast, and is one hour, 15 minutes away from San Sebastian by car.

Special mention... Podgorica, Montenegro

OK, so Podgorica isn't one of the very cheapest places you can fly from LGW. However, it did keep catching our eye as we trawled through the many, many (many) fares on offer. We clocked starting prices for returns ranging from £42 to £55 over six months of the year, flying Wizz Air.

If you're looking for somewhere a tad less well-trodden than Spain, Portugal or Italy, then a trip to the Balkans may suit. In Podgorica – Montenegro's capital – you can explore old churches, monasteries and bridges. However, it's well worth getting out of the city into nature –tripping to the surreally beautiful Lake Skadar, and bussing it over to the mountainous coastal towns of Budva and Kotor.

London Heathrow (LHR)

cheapest travel from heathrow to london

Dublin, Ireland

Dublin could have landed on this list three times over. It frequently popped up month after month among the cheapest options from LHR, LGW and LCY (with the cheapest fare from Gatwick, and City being slightly more expensive).

From LHR specifically, BA flights to the Irish capital started from £48 to £51 over all 12 months. So, a stroll over the 200-year-old Ha'penny Bridge and an afternoon in an Irish pub, touring the Jameson distillery or watching the local sport, hurling, at Croke Park is within easy reach for travellers on a budget.

Oslo, Norway

A trip to Norway won't break the bank, as return flights from Heathrow start from £54. We spotted that fare and starting prices up to £68 over seven months of the year, with BA and SAS among the airlines offering the lowest prices.

That's a bonus, because it's not the cheapest city to actually visit. Still, you can make the most of the free Vigeland Park, home to 200 sculptures, its many free museums, or enjoy a wander along the harbour. P.S. If you fancy Scandinavian capitals Stockholm and Copenhagen, flights from LHR can be reasonable at certain times of year, with starting prices from £59 and £61, respectively.

Glasgow, Scotland

If you don't fancy the train to Glasgow – a lengthy five hours, 45 minutes – a flight will drop you off in Scotland's cool second city in one hour, 30 minutes. From LHR, you're looking at fares starting from £51 to £68 (with BA), over 11 months of the year.

In Glasgow, you can expect to indulge in great food, shop at independent retailers, enjoy a themed walking tour or two, and explore museums, galleries, its cathedral and the Glasgow Necropolis. We should note that flights to Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Inverness had similar return fares over several months of the year, so your options for a Scottish city break from LHR are plentiful. U.K. cities Newcastle and Manchester were also comparable.

Billund, Denmark

For an unexpected Danish trip, we spotted return fares from LHR to Billund starting from £62 to £68 over seven months of the year via BA.

The birthplace of LEGO, you can expect a few LEGO-themed things to do in this Danish town, from the LEGO House museum to LEGOLAND Billund (which, to be fair, Londoners can experience close to home in Windsor). There's also a family-friendly holiday area complete with water park called Lalalandia. Museums, a sculpture park and nearby Engelsholm Castle offer more to see.

London Stansted (STN)

cheapest travel from heathrow to london

Nantes, France

The French city of Nantes appeared month after month with cheap fares in our search of Stansted's cheapest destinations, starting from £19 return, rising to £27 (with Ryanair). Naturally, it seems to be cheaper in autumn/winter.

Nantes is the sixth largest city in France, historically part of the Brittany region, and is known for its historic castle Chateau des Ducs de Bretagne, its Old Town and white Muscadet wine. That's a big check mark next to the usual 'things to do' on a European city break – but, somewhat unexpectedly, on the Île de Nantes in the city centre is a huge, mechanical elephant you can ride on.

Edinburgh, Scotland

Flights to Edinburgh from STN start from around £22 (with Ryanair), meaning a visit to Scotland's capital is well within reach in one hour, 20 minutes, a touch faster than the train's average four hours, 50 minutes (and, unless you're really good at nabbing train tickets, probably a bit cheaper).

Here, you can ascend a hilltop to reach the stunning Edinburgh Castle, shop til you drop on Princes Street, drink on The Royal Mile, stop in a cosy café (such as The Elephant House, where JK Rowling wrote some of Harry Potter) or pub, or mosey past the Old Town's stone buildings.

Related: The whisky drinker's guide to Scotland

Toulouse, France

Toulouse is also a good option from STN, with return fares starting from around £19 to £25 (with Ryanair), seen over several months of the year.

The city – France's fourth largest – is sometimes known as La Ville Rose, thanks to its terracotta architecture and peach-hued Neoclassical palace, Place du Capitole. An excellent choice for snap-happy travellers, it's also a wonderful place to visit for art and museums. If you want to explore further, a UNESCO World Heritage Site – the Medieval citadel Cité de Carcassonne – is one hour, 10 minutes away by car.

London City (LCY)

cheapest travel from heathrow to london

The cheapest flight we found from LCY via Skyscanner was to Luxembourg, starting from £78 return (with LUXAIR). Starting fares appeared pretty fixed for this destination on our search, varying from £78 to £81 for 10 months of the year, and at they are cheapest in June, July and October.

Perhaps this petite European country, nestled between Belgium, Germany and France, hasn't topped your travel wish list – but there's plenty to see and do. You fly into LUX, near the capital Luxembourg City, and find there's more to see than you might expect, from the picturesque Grund quarter to Pétrusse Casemates tunnels. Beyond the city, there's Vianden (home to the namesake castle and a Victor Hugo Museum) and the nature-packed 112km Mullerthal hiking trial.

Rotterdam, The Netherlands

Rotterdam in The Netherlands makes a great city break – and return fare starting prices from LCY hover around the £110 to £125 mark over 11 months of the year (with KLM or BA).

A major European port city, you'll often find you're near the water while roaming Rotterdam. It's a design enthusiast's dream, too, with its yellow Cube Houses, Erasmus Bridge and striking, dome-like Markthal, housing endless grocery and street food options. The Netherlands has an excellent train network, too, meaning you can easily hop around on day trips. The traditional town of Delft, famed for its blue-and-white china, is less than 15 minutes away by train, while The Hague is just 30 minutes and student city Leiden around 35 minutes. Even the train to Amsterdam is fast at around one hour, 15 minutes.

Geneva, Switzerland

Over nine months of the year, we spotted flights from LCY to Geneva, starting from as low as £87 (flying SWISS). Starting prices did creep up heading into the summer months, up to £113, tending to be cheaper in autumn/winter.

Fortunately, Geneva is lovely in the sun and a suitably wintery place to spend a few days during the colder season. Blessed with beautiful views of the surrounding Alps and Mont Blanc, this pretty Swiss city is also home to the United Nations building, a museum devoted to watchmaker Patek Philippe, its sky-high water fountain – and is famous for its chocolate. One downside if you're on a budget? Geneva is pretty expensive.

Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Amsterdam needs little introduction and is similarly priced to Rotterdam from LCY. We found it popped up with starting prices from £113 to £125 over 11 months of the year, with low fares available flying KLM or BA.

A dizzying mix of glistening canals, peaceful boat rides, purple houses, bustling shopping streets (De 9 Straatjes) and quieter side ones – not to mention all the locals whizzing around on bikes – there's a lot of Amsterdam to take in just walking around it, before you even get to any of the places that make it one of the world's most popular city breaks, including Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, Vondelpark and Anne Frank House.

London Luton (LTN)

cheapest travel from heathrow to london

Cork, Ireland

Ireland's second city frequently popped up as we scoured for the cheapest destinations at LTN, with return fares starting from £18 in January, and heading up to £29 (with Ryanair). When prices started climbing slightly in the summertime, Cork was still among the lowest price destinations we could find.

What a relief – because, when you arrive, you'll soon find out you're in the so-called 'food capital of Ireland', and find the contents of your wallet suddenly disappear on countless pub trips, quality restaurants and multiple visits to foodie paradise English Market. Beyond that, a trip to Blarney Castle & Gardens is on order. So is a jaunt across the harbour to Cobh, particularly as the colourful town was the last port of call for the doomed Titanic, as highlighted in the 'Titanic Experience'. Interestingly, both Cork and Cobh offer prison tours – the former of a 19th-century jail called Cork City Gaol and the latter of an ex-island prison called Spike Island.

Krakow, Poland

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Polish city Krakow appeared to be one of LTN's cheaper destinations year-round, excluding July and August. Starting return fares stayed low at £20 to £29 over seven months of the year (flying Wizz Air). Other Polish cities showed several months of low fares, with Poznan, Lublin and Rzeszow showing low starting fares around the £20s mark for various airlines. In January, February and March (post-Christmas market?), Wroclaw proved cheap with starting return fares of £21 to £22.

Krakow is an easy city break option, though. It has a large market square, Rynek Glowny, dating back to the 13th century. There's Wawel Castle, which has a statue of the legendary Wawel Dragon that breathes actual fire, and a cathedral of the same name. A short visit away are the Wieliczka Salt Mines.

Special mention... off-beat Europe

Though not the very cheapest we could find, it's hard not to notice some of the affordable fares for some lesser-known destinations in Europe from LTN.

For March 2023 alone, we spotted return fares for Ljubljana in Slovenia from £32, from £34, Debrecen in Hungary from £35, Pristina in Kosovo from £37, and Sarajevo in Bosnia and Herzegovina from £35 (often flying with Wizz Air) . Sure, it might be a bit cold or mild, but... London will probably be cold in March, too.

Top 5 airlines flying to heathrow.

Delay getting into gate in ATL caused delay in bags when getting to BWI, disrupting evening plans with family.

They separated our seats and moved us to the back of the plane. Hundreds of dollars and thousands of miles used and this was my platinum member experience.

New boarding doesn't make sense. Filling front first is slow.

Delta flight was great from the check in all the way to arrival. However, I had a very bad experience. I requested a wheelchair and the wheelchair employee that went to pick me up from the plane in Boston to bring me to the baggage claims told me I have to pay him. I was under the impression that it was a free service and I usually give tips but the person forced me to pay and since I said no because I was upset with his demand when my daughter walked in to pick me up he demanded payment from my daughter who paid him thinking maybe now it is a charged service.

6 hour delay including one after we were boarded. Horrible experience.

Horrible. Grateful to be alive but spent 13 hours at airport only to return back to my familys house and flight changed to next day. They tried to fix a part on plane, had no back up plane and after 10 hours , reattempted the flight and it STILL wasn't fixed. We got a meal voucher and rescheduled flight but there should be some other compensation for the 15 hours spent in airport

It was NOT pleasant. Started from checking our luggage to the last time getting off the plane. The crew was not friendly, the food was horrible and the seats were too close to each other that I got a bruise on my knee.

Nothing unusual. It was fine. I hate having to pay extra for my seat.

Everything was Okay. I was disappointed our luggage didn’t arrive with us and came in a flight 7 hours later. Representative said the will be delivered to the hotel. They have not arrived 24 hours later

We splurged and decided to fly first class. Seats were roomy. But flight crew arrived late to the airport. That delayed our flight. Most of the passengers had to try to make connections flights. I felt bad for them. We checked 4 bags. We got three from the baggage claim carousel. 4th one was lost. Delta online help wasn’t good. Baggage claim staff were sympathetic and nice but we waited around for almost 2 hours and it had t been found. They did find it several hours later and we had to drive back to airport to retrieve it. I won’t be splurging on 1st. Lass again anytime soon. I think we got worse service. I am also not a huge fan of delta but we have family in ATL so we don’t have a ton of choice. What should have been an easy flight turned into a stressful event due to flight crew tardiness and baggage mishandling.

My only complaint is that the pocket in front of me was ripped and my things, like iPad and airline magazines, kept slipping to the floor.

Flight delayed yet again. Crew apathetic and unhelpful re affect on connecting flight.

I think Virgin is one of the best flying experiences, especially from/to the UK. The staff are so helpful and fun, the food is good, seats comfortable, goof entertainment and great value. Check in and boarding is pretty pain free. I also find that the other passengers are generally so kind and considerate than when I've flown other airlines.

Cabin crew on our flight showed lack of any customer service gruff and acting annoyed if you asked anything and I mean anything Example a man on the seat over dropped his beer on my husbands blanket We asked if we could switch out blankets cabin crew Said. No we don’t have any extras OK well can you take the wet one Cabin crew looked disgusted and annoyed Took it no OK or yes just a growl

Quick flight. But cabin crew were very noisy and talking too much, especially when we were seated at the back of the plane trying to sleep through the night .

My ticket was for Premium Economy and all the seats were taken, I was placed in Economy class and I’m looking for a refund.

Unfortunately delayed 2 hrs due to faulty tyre.. which had to be changed, but better safe than sorry.

The delay was an issue. Other than that. Every thing good

Hi vergin Atlantic service was good but the flight ticket agent travel up charge me extra 57 pounds as a airport charges, actually I refuse to pay but they say if I not pay £57 then they say you will not be able to travel from Heathrow to goa ,so for me there was no option and it was just 3 day before my departure so i paid, so please look in to the matter. And I have a receipt of £ 57 as well .thanks

Staff didn’t check cabin well for landing seemed more interested in chatting to each other. Food was poor and differed from pre order.

Check-in was a little confusing. I paid for extra luggage, but when i checked in the system didnt seem to know. Arrived in Paris early after a late departure. Luggage arrived on the same flight with no apparent damage.

No access to the Wi-Fi, noisy group of people made it difficult for me to hear through my earbuds. Snacks and drinks - limited service when your seat is at the back of the plane - people up front are always served first and the back gets whatever is left. Not pleased.

They had three choices for snacks - but you could only have one - and they ran out of the dark chocolate before they made it all the way down the aisle... Packed flight - limited service.

As usual, United scheduling is completely misleading. A 54-minute layover at O’Hare is too short to make a lot of connections, especially since the flight landed “on time” but had to wait on the taxiway 15 minutes for a gate to open up. Then it takes another 10 minutes to exit the plane before one can run to another concourse to catch a connecting flight.

I am not an electronic savy. I don't know how to maneuver the APPS for services. Why can't I just buy food without the apps.

Quality of service and maintenance has declined since my last trip before COVID.

Flight home lot's of room shame I never noticed that they ripped my suitcase and didn't notice it to I got toy destination and had to buy new set

I was pleased and I had a very good experience. The staff was friendly and attentive.

The Economy Plus rows weren’t as roomy as expected, and the meal service left a lot to be desired for.

Flight delayed. They made no attempt to get our luggage to our connecting flight so I am without necessities after they begged me to check in my bag. Still dont have it.

Deplaning time. Having to wait 10 to 25 minutes after boarding to leave the gate. Having to wait 10 minutes to park at the gate to deplane.☹️

The flight was delayed which was disappointing. There was no pre takeoff refreshment in first, as we had to wait around an hour in our seats before take off that was disappointing too. The inflight entertainment/wifi did not work, and the crew were slow to offer drinks in flight

AA is fabulous. However , Iberia cancelled our Boston - Barcelona flight the morning of the flight - 9/16/24. This was almost a week ago and we have still heard nothing from Iberia/Vueling. Found out from a kayak email that morning that the flight was cancelled. Iberia Customer service reps wouldn’t help us and said to call Vueling. No one answers phone at Vueling. Terrible wild goose chase on DAY OF TRAVEL. AA came to our rescue.

Boston ticket agent Cheryl Porter is WONDERFUL. Our Iberia flight to Barcelona was cancelled the morning we were scheduled to leave and Cheryl was our super hero - she found us seats on a flight to London and on to Barcelona. Truly a “can-do” attitude which we appreciated so much after the Iberia ticket agents told us there was “absolutely nothing they could do”. (As did the customer service agents at Iberia’s call center) Ms Porter is truly a wonderful person who genuinely cares about travelers!

For coast to coast travel the A321 and even the NEO, even in first class will never be excellent. That would take a B787 or 777 to accomplish.

Service not nearly as good as Qatar airways flights used to be on service from PHL to DOH.

No choice of meal in first class. Was the worst meal I’ve ever had in first class.

3 hour delay on run way, not even a drink offered, staff seemed rude and rushed, felt unwell so asked twice for paracetamol and was told to wait, never got it

not enough crew for business class and not great service as a result. underwhelmed overall

The crew was very helpful and the aircraft was clean. More attentiveness to us in business class.

Food made us sick for the rest of the day. Terrible passenger in front of me kept reclining and banging his seat, it hurt my knee multiple times. I kindly asked the attendant to intervene, she would not. Way too many sick people coughing on the flight without wearing a mask. Sick passengers should not be allowed to fly unless they wear a mask. I hope we don't get sick for our 2 week vacation

We didn’t flight with British Airways because the flight was cancelled at the last minute .

Flight delayed and we were forced to check our carryon bags which was huge inconvenience.

Very disappointed because we don’t get in advance the cancellation fly to Paris. By the way, we are still without luggage Bad experience

Could have done with a 2nd round of drinks even if it was only to distribute bottled water

The seats (upgraded exit row), were the last comfortable plane seats my wife or I have ever experienced. Too narrow to turn at all to find a sleeping position. Devoid of cushioning to the point of feeling the frame bars across both the seat and the back. It was extremely uncomfortable and neither of us slept on the red eye.

Lost luggage l try contact the airline no answer FILE REFERENCE# CHQBA10196/14 SEP24/ 1043 YEE JAMES FLIGHT/DATE - BA202/13SEP/BA666/14SEP NUMBER OF BAG - 1 TICKET NUMBER- BA219096982 COLOR/ TYPE - BLACK DUFFEL/ SPORT BAG TAG NUMBER - BA401690/

The second leg of my flight unexpectedly got canceled. I was stuck at the airport for the whole day and instead of flying out that morning I flew out in the evening. For some of my fellow passengers it was the second cancellation and their original flight was supposed to go out the day before. There was no reason given though getting rebooked was quick even though I would have preferred if I would have been on one of the earlier flights that day. Compensation was a £10 voucher for some food at the airport. I eventually arrived without further incident but but due to the cancellation, it was one of my more frustrating travels of my life.

They denied us boarding on our scheduled flight and experienced significant disruption to our travel plans because of overbooking the flight!

Didn’t even get on the flight!! BA had a system crash and knocked many peoples boarding passes back for the connecting flight which we all would have made but ended up missing due to being refused past the barrier. There was one member of staff on and when he shift swapped the new staff member called us liars and that we were going to be too late for our flight hence the knock back which was false. I was an hour and ten minutes early for my connection flight at the time of scanning the boarding pass. Waited for three hours and ended up having to book a train home myself which was 4 hours long! Staff were useless and entire experience was an inconvenience. I had been travelling for three months and of course it was when I was back in my home country that I had the first muck up! Will not be touching BA to fly again

Enjoy London like a Local

An electrifying metropolis where history meets innovation, London is calling you. At every turn, you will be greeted by iconic landmarks known across the globe like Big Ben and Tower Bridge, while its bustling streets bring to life a cast of characters from rushing businessmen to curious tourists. From the artistic finds in the Tate Modern to SoHo’s vivacious nightlife, London's blend of tradition and modernity is perfect for your next adventure. With Royal Air Maroc’s flights to London, it’s never been easier to embrace everything this spectacular city has to offer.

Special Things to See in London

You’ve seen many of London’s most famous sights in pop culture – now it’s time to experience their magic for yourself.

  • Iconic Sights

The best news of all for London visitors is that many of the iconic monuments tourists most want to see all lie in a close area around the River Thames. The Big Ben clock tower, angular Tower Bridge, the austere Houses of Parliament and even Number 10 Downing Street and Churchill’s War Rooms are waiting for you to explore them.

  • Royal Footsteps

Buckingham Palace and the tree-lined Mall may be the best-known royal footprint in London but don’t forget the Tower of London. Once a palace itself, it became notorious as a royal prison and today holds the Crown Jewels on display.

  • Extraordinary Modern Buildings

London may be best known for its rich history, but it is also home to some of the most architecturally brilliant modern buildings in the world. Take in the ‘Gherkin’ (30 St Mary Axe), the Shard at London Bridge, and the mind-bending Crystal, now London City Hall.

London’s Fascinating Museums

The boldly-named British Museum houses over 50,000 artefacts, including the Rosetta Stone, Ancient Egyptian and Roman relics, and masterpieces of art. Alongside the gargantuan fixed exhibits, there are always intriguing travelling exhibitions too. Meanwhile, London’s Natural History Museum has a wealth of fascinating interactive exhibits (including an earthquake simulator) alongside one of the biggest natural history collections in the world. Explore life through the ages from the dinosaurs to the modern day. Then round it off with the Science Museum, and let our fascinating tech heritage pull you back into the present.

The Tate Modern building was once a power station, but today it holds a world-renowned collection of contemporary and modern art. Pair it with the Tate Britain, home to older masterpieces, and soak in one of the best art experiences in the world. There’s also the fashionable Victoria and Albert (called the V&A) museum, showcasing fashion, textiles, and decorative arts.

Looking for something unusual? Try the London Canal Museum, showcasing the history of trade on the Thames canals, or explore the Cartoon Museum’s delightful collection. Cool off with a quick trot through the Fan Museum.

Gorgeous London Parks

London is graced with over 3,000 parks. The largest of the Royal Parks, Hyde Park, dates to the 16th century and has one of the most beautiful rose gardens you’ll ever see, sheltered by spreading trees and cradling the Serpentine Lake. Vast and scenic Richmond Park houses trees that have seen London rise, burn, fall, and rise again, and contains ancient burial barrows. Don’t forget to take in Isabella Plantation, a cascading woodland garden.

Regent’s Park is best thought of as a chain of spectacular linked gardens and also houses London Zoo. There’s also a boating lake. Crystal Palace Park now stands where the famous Crystal Palace Exhibition once did – including the first dinosaur sculptures ever unveiled to the world. For a lesser-known haven of natural beauty, try Holland Park, home to the utopian Kyoto Garden, with charming lanterns and cascading waters.

Where to Shop in London

Not sure where to start looking for the perfect memento for your trip? Try Oxford Street, possibly the most famous shopping street in London. Home to the iconic Selfridges department store, you’ll find big brands, designers, and everything else. Or breeze down Regent Street, where some of London’s oldest shops elegantly co-exist with flagship retailers.

Head to Marylebone or the Royal Exchange for luxury brands, and Notting Hill for edgy, trendy finds. Don’t forget to include the famous Harrod’s Department Store in your quest for luxuries. Spitalfields Market has a reputation for vintage treasures and cutting-edge fashion.

If quirky and artistic is more your vibe, Camden Market needs to be on your radar. The sprawling market complex nests in several historic buildings, so be sure to look up from your bargain hunting, too! You’ll find food, handmade crafts, and a fascinating range of goodies. Brick Lane is excellent for vintage finds and small indie shops, and there’s the ‘pop-up’ mall at Boxpark close at hand.

Seeing London with Children

Delight your inner child as well as your little ones, and soar above the London skyline on the London Eye, the observation wheel on the South Bank of the River Thames. This is a great central location to start exploring London’s most familiar historic buildings too, and a Thames-side walk makes a pretty breather. Watch out for the red telephone boxes in this area! The Jubilee Gardens playground at the foot of the Eye is also popular with children.

If you want to introduce British royal heritage to your children, try the Royal Mews. Officially the royal stables, the dazzling coaches on display, combined with a few new equine friends, are sure to keep even the littlest children entertained.

With an exceptional number of theatres in the West End, there’s always a fun, family-friendly musical to take in. Harry Potter fans can visit Platform 9 and ¾ at King’s Cross Station. Then pop into the Twist Museum, where perspective-based play will challenge their senses with its unusual exhibits.
