The two-story, three-bar space, named after Richard's first recording studio, is inspired by a classic theatrical zeitgeist — layered with a moody and sexy ‘70s, punk vibe. Ground-breaking shows will kick the night off before it transitions into a mind-blowing, goodbye-early-morning-workout nightclub.

Gaming & Lounge

There's no wrong way to casino (just ask the guys from that 1970s Vegas movie), but a great way to start is by choosing your slot machine district. Whether it be Little Asia, Ocean Drive Tournament Central or Adventure Alley, there is a district (and 115 slot machines) to satisfy every gamer's desire. If you're more of a table player, we've got craps, roulette, electronic Texas Hold’em, single deck blackjack, three card poker and ultimate Texas Hold’em. But if you're not a gambler, grab a drink and let our dealers teach you how to play — so you have the confidence to play when we're off on international waters.

The Red Room

Our larger-than-life entertainment space is the first ever transformational, multi-form theater at sea. Boundary-pushing performances on the traditional Proscenium stage or late-night dance parties on the flat-floor configuration — undiscovered experiences are always unfolding here. Designed by renowned theater design consultants, Auerbach Pollock Friedlander — we've created a unique and flexible (while still being intimate) theater space that delivers a sea (lol) of possibilities.

The Groupie

With song choices that span decades, genres, and octave abilities, these bookable private sessions only require having your go-to tracks chosen, singing voice warmed up, and invited friends ready for a private dance and song battle to remember.

Voyage Vinyl

With our brand’s history rooted deeply in music, our sonic identity peaks at our record shop on board. Stocked with music magazines, headphones and record players, you can pull up to a listening station with a stack from our selection of both classic and current albums including special and limited editions.

Located in the Social Club, The Arcade pays homage to the epic childhood arcade games of yesteryear — like pacman and other various vintage arcade games, a race car game,  air hockey tables, a shuffleboard table and a foosball table. Inner-children are permitted to run wild here.

The Social Club

From The Arcade and The Loose Cannon to The Social Club Diner within it — The Social Club is where you go to relax, game, or casually get to know the other Sailors. Inside, you'll find games like air hockey, shuffleboard, foosball, and a plethora of board and card games. With smooth curves and nautical details, we've created a pool deck with the sophisticated glam of a contemporary yacht. Whether you're looking to sunbathe in one of our daybeds or let last night's choices melt away in the pool, you can detox and recover, or start the party all over again. Alaska city puts limit on how many cruise passengers can visit after being overwhelmed by tourists last year

The capital city of Alaska will set new limits on how many cruise ship passengers can visit every day after a post-pandemic deluge of tourism.

Last year the roughly 32,000 residents of Juneau weathered hordes of hikers, schools of whale watchers, and swarms of overflying helicopters as roughly 1.6m visitors in total – or up to 21,000 per day in peak periods – disembarked at the docks.

Now the city government has signed a voluntary agreement with the cruise ship industry that caps the number of vessels allowed to dock each day, starting in 2026.

The agreement limits daily docking to ships with a cumulative 16,000 beds on Sundays through Fridays and 12,000 beds on Saturdays, although the number of actual visitors will sometimes be larger because cruise ships often exceed their listed capacity.

"The city’s position is that we do not have room for cruise growth with our current infrastructure, and we have negotiated the daily passenger limits to bring down our busiest days," city tourism manager Alexandra Pierce told The Guardian .

"Cruise tourism is important for our local and regional economies, and we need to be good neighbors while also finding the balance between concerned residents and the local livelihoods that depend on the visitor industry."

But some locals believe the new limits are insufficient, and are pushing for a ballot measure that would reduce the limit to 250 beds on Saturdays and July 4, effectively banning most passenger ships on those days.

"All we are seeking is one day a week, plus the Fourth of July, when locals can go downtown, visit the glacier, hike on our trails, and go fishing without competing with thousands and thousands of cruise passengers," said supporter Steve Krall last week, according to The Juneau Empire .

"This is a modest and reasonable request: a simple day of rest for everyone."

Other residents have opposed the ballot measure, arguing that cruise ships bring in enormous amounts of consumer spending and tax revenue that the city and its people cannot afford to pass up.

Juneau, a former gold mining town shielded from the Pacific Ocean by the rocky labyrinth of the Alexander Archipelago, bills itself as the single most popular whale-watching destination in the world and has a tourist season lasting roughly 22 weeks.

Between 2022 and 2023, the number of cruise ship passengers visiting Juneau rose by 44 percent, according to The Alaska Beacon , which Pierce said was "shocking" and sometimes "suffocating" for many residents.

The new agreement is reportedly intended to keep tourist numbers roughly steady, giving the city more time to expand its infrastructure while incorporating enough of a delay that cruise lines can adapt their future schedules.

Kevin M. Rabbitt

X Kevin M. Rabbitt is Chief Executive Officer and Board Director at Hornblower Group, a global experiences and transportation leader. The group’s expansive portfolio includes land-based experiences (City Experiences), water-based experiences and dining and sightseeing cruises (City Cruises), ferry and transportation services (City Ferry), and small ship overnight cruises (American Queen  Voyages ). Hornblower is owned by management and private equity firm, Crestview Partners.

In addition to his role at Hornblower, Rabbitt serves as Operating Executive in the media portfolio for Crestview Partners. Rabbitt serves as a Board Director on behalf of Crestview for investments at Congruex Networks, Viad Corp and Framestore/Company 3. Additionally, Rabbitt serves on non-profit boards for Pittsburgh Children’s Hospital Foundation and Jerome Bettis “The Bus Stops Here” Foundation.

Prior CEO roles for Rabbitt have included NEP Group, the worldwide leader of technical outsourced production services operating in 24 countries; 3 Day Blinds, a leading manufacturer and retailer of custom window coverings; and Global Experience Specialists (GES), a global face-to-face events and tradeshow services company.

Early roles for Rabbitt included consulting stops at Bain and Company and Deloitte Consulting; running a small entertainment business; time with the Houston Rockets basketball organization; and an Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach at Texas State University.

Rabbitt holds an MBA from the Harvard Business School (2001), and a BA in Managerial Studies from Rice University (1995). While at Rice, Rabbitt was captain and point guard for the Men’s Basketball team.

Rabbitt enjoys spending time with his wife Emily (Rice 1994; Jones School 1995) and their four children. Rabbitt is an avid sports fan including Rice Owls as well as his native Kansas City teams the Chiefs, Royals and Jayhawks. Rabbitt is an active supporter of college basketball programs including Pitt, Robert Morris University, UT-San Antonio, and Henderson State. In his free time, Rabbitt enjoys coaching youth sports and playing golf.

Adam C. Peakes

With Hornblower’s overarching goal of becoming a Global Experiences and Transportation Leader, Peakes works in partnership with the division leaders to enable the strategic business plans across the organization.

Peakes comes to Hornblower from Merichem Corporation,   a large private industrial services company, serving as the company CFO, and previously as CFO at Noble Corporation,   one of the largest publicly traded offshore drilling contractors in the oil and gas industry. Prior to that, he had a nearly 20-year career as an Investment Banker, serving as a Managing Director at Goldman Sachs, then as a Partner at the boutique investment banking firm of Tudor, Pickering, Holt & Company. Peakes additionally spent time working in the sports industry, including playing professional basketball in Europe and later as a member of the Houston Rockets management team.

Peakes graduated from Rice University where he played Division I basketball and was a two-time Academic All-American, and the Southwest Conference Scholar Athlete of the Year.    He gained his MBA from Harvard Business School.   Additionally, Peakes serves on the Board of Directors for Trecora Resources (NYSE: TREC) and Diamond Offshore Drilling (NYSE: DO), and he is Chairman of the Board of Advisors for Rice University Jones School of Management (Rice MBA).

Outside of work, Peakes enjoys spending time with his wife and four children as well as traveling, reading, and playing golf.  He currently resides in Houston, Texas.

Frank Dunsford

X As Hornblower Group’s Chief Financial Officer, Dunsford provides strategic financial insight, supports growth plans, and drives value creation while overseeing all financial and accounting matters related to the company. Dunsford’s background is in private equity-backed companies and public companies, driving value creation in M&A acquisition, integrations, and change management initiatives.

Dunsford came to Hornblower Group from Youth Enrichment Brands, a private equity-backed youth activities company, serving as the company CFO. Prior to that, he spent over three years with Hornblower Group as the interim CFO and Vice President Corporate Controller. Prior to his first stint with Hornblower Group, Dunsford spent more than 18 years with KPMG Audit and Accounting Advisory.

Dunsford enjoys spending time with his wife Pramoda and their two children as well as traveling, hiking, listening to music, and playing cricket. He currently resides in the San Francisco Bay Area, California.

Stewart Alpert

Currently serving as Hornblower’s Chief Information Security Officer and Head of Technology, Stewart has extensive experience and expertise at the nexus of technology and business. Well versed in security, engineering and IT, he’s held leadership roles in top companies such as VMware and Walmart Labs as well as several start-ups. Stewart holds a master’s degree in software engineering, and a bachelor’s degree in computer science.

Mitch Randall

X Mitch Randall is the General Counsel of Hornblower Group, the holding company for City Experiences and American Queen Voyages. He is responsible for all of Hornblower’s legal matters, including litigation, mergers & acquisitions, human resources, real estate and permitting, commercial contract negotiations, finance, risk management, corporate governance, and management of external counsel.

Mitch was previously the President and Chief Legal Officer of PureGen Power, a clean power company focused on the acquisition, improvement and operation of utility scale solar projects. Prior to joining PureGen in January 2017, he was the President of Recurrent Energy, one of North America’s largest solar project developers.

Mitch has more than 20 years of legal experience in hospitality, energy, project development, regulatory, finance, and mergers & acquisitions. Prior to serving as President of Recurrent Energy, Mitch served as its General Counsel, overseeing the company’s legal strategy across its operations. Prior to joining Recurrent Energy, Mitch was a partner with Morrison & Foerster LLP, where he represented energy, real estate, development, health care and technology companies in complex transactional, permitting and regulatory matters.

Mitch received a JD from University of California’s Hastings College of the Law and a BS from the University of Colorado at Boulder.

X A graduate of the University of Chicago Booth School of Business (MBA) and the University of Colorado Leeds School of Business (BS Finance), Phil is an experienced travel and hospitality professional specializing in customer experience, service operations, and strategy. From his time consulting with McKinsey & Company, Deloitte, and Hitachi Consulting, he has wide industry knowledge and practice across airlines, hotels, casinos, airports, OTAs, transportation companies, and experience operators. Prior to consulting, Phil started his career with The Walt Disney Company and Six Flags. Today, as Chief of Staff, Phil works across Hornblower’s businesses to set their long-term strategy and lead key strategic initiatives.

Michael K. Burke

X Mike joined Statue City Cruises as VP & COO at the start of 2008. Statue City Cruises carries 4.5 million passengers annually to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island and on harbor cruises & charters. He directs all operations and fiscal affairs of Statue City Cruises. Commitment to safety & security, hospitality, guest service, innovation, and environmental initiatives has enabled Statue City Cruises to achieve results far exceeding industry standards. Mike is responsible for relationships with the National Park Service, U.S. Coast Guard, NYC Parks & Recreation, and numerous government agencies and not-for-profit partners.

In August 2020, Mike was promoted to COO, of Concessions & Park Services to direct Alcatraz City Cruises as well as Statue City Cruises. In addition to an expanded role with NPS and USCG matters, Mike is the liaison with the Port of San Francisco and the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy.

Prior to his current position, Mike served as CFO at BillyBey Ferry Company from 2005 to 2008. Mike was President and CEO at Circle Line-Statue of Liberty Ferry in 2000 and 2001, where he served as its first non-owner chief executive. He was also advisor and consultant to Circle Line from 1982 to 2000.

Mike is an active Board and Committee Member of NYC & Company, the Friends of Governors Island and various other organizations. He holds a US Coast Guard 100 GRT Captain License and is a Certified Public Accountant.

Mory DiMaurizio

X Mory DiMaurizio joined Hornblower Canada in 2014. As Vice President & General Manager, he oversaw the successful startup, development and operations of Hornblower Niagara City Cruises. At the helm of Canada’s most iconic tourist attraction, Mory oversees the safe passage of over 2.4 million visitors per year. He is responsible for ensuring that his highly skilled team is focused on guest services, safety and environmental goals and objectives. As key liaison with the Niagara Parks Commission, an operational enterprise agency for the Ontario Ministry of Heritage, Sport, Tourism and Culture Industries, Mory ensures compliance with all financial and operating agreements.

With 25 years of experience in the hospitality industry, Mory sits on the Board of Directors for Niagara Falls Tourism as Treasurer and the Tourism Partnership of Niagara.

Prior to joining Hornblower, Mory was General Manager for Medieval Times Entertainment overseeing the Toronto operations at the Canadian National Exhibition from 2005 to 2013. Mory was General Manager for the Ontario Lottery & Gaming Corporation participating in Casino development, operations and 14 successful casino startup operations on time and budget within the Canadian gaming industry from 1996 to 2005.

Mory is a Certified Engineering Technologist (OACETT), is a graduate of Electrical Engineering with a double minor in Computers and Electronics from Niagara College.

Stephen Oddo

Stephen is a serial travel industry entrepreneur and founded multiple companies in the tours & activities sector since 2005. He founded WalksofItaly.com, an online travel company for visitors to Italy offering sightseeing tours and travel activities, in 2009. Walks of Italy soon became one of the largest operators of experiential travel services in Italy.

Walks is now a global brand and one of the largest operators of guided tours in the world, handling hundreds of thousands of passengers annually. Walks operates travel experiences in 20 cities across 9 countries. During the pandemic, Stephen led development of Walks’ virtual tour program “Tours from Home,” receiving tens of thousands of paid bookings and widespread acclaim in Travel + Leisure, Forbes, Skift, Boston Globe, and more. In early 2021, Walks joined City Experiences (Hornblower Group) to start the next chapter of growth and expansion. He also led the acquisition of Devour Tours, a leading global food tour company, closing in late 2021.

Rinat Glinert

Rinat Glinert serves at the Chief Operating Officer of Venture Ashore ,  the largest independent shore excursion company in the world, delivering thousands of shore excursions, tours and activities led by professional guides in hundreds of ports worldwide. Venture Ashore is part of the City Experiences portfolio of brands as its newest addition, supporting the company’s overall business strategy as the leader in amazing experiences. As Chief Operating Officer, Glinert leads the team in growing the Venture Ashore offerings on a global basis and establishing strong functionality of the business to drive extensive and sustainable growth through designing and implementing business strategies, plans and procedures.

Glinert’s career spans more than 18 years in the cruise and travel industry beginning with Royal Caribbean International in operations aboard the Vision of the Seas . She then proceeded to hold several progressive leadership positions at the corporate headquarters, culminating in overseeing guest services operations for over 22 ships and nearly 5,000 employees. As head of the strategic projects group, she was responsible for identifying and implementing onboard staffing efficiencies to better serve both employees and guests, as well as launching new services throughout the fleet. As a part of the newbuild hotel operations team, Glinert was instrumental in the design, buildout, and launch of the largest ships in the world, including the Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas cruise ships, as well as overseeing the creation of Royal Caribbean’s VIP suite operations in Labadee, Haiti. In 2012, Glinert left Royal Caribbean to launch her own company, ShoreFox, which created technology tools for independent tour guides for nearly 2,500 tours in more than 220 destinations worldwide. Glinert shares a deep passion for travel and loves the connectivity it provides for people to take part in new experiences and broaden their horizons.

Glinert is a graduate of Cornell University with a degree in Hotel Administration. She resides in Rockville, Maryland with her husband and 2 children. She is an avid scuba diver and her favorite excursions include swimming with the pigs in Nassau, Bahamas, hiking Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau, Alaska and sailing aboard a catamaran in the azure waters of Bora Bora.

Scott Thornton

X Scott Thornton is the COO, City Ferry, where he leads the operations of all ferry systems it operates, including NYC Ferry, Puerto Rico Ferry, and more.

In his more than three decades with Hornblower, Scott has served at every level of the organization, beginning as a bartender onboard the California Hornblower in Los Angeles. In his time at Hornblower, Scott has exemplified the leadership and creativity that drives our growth and success, helping to lead each Hornblower start-up operation and ensuring the highest level of operational standards and focus on safety, quality, and crew development.

Prior to serving as COO of Hornblower Group’s Ferries & Transportation Division, Scott served as Chief Operating Officer of NYC Ferry. Since its launch in 2017, NYC Ferry – a new public transit option serving Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, and The Bronx – has served more than 17.5 million riders.

Before leading NYC Ferry, Scott was General Manager and Vice President of Operations of Alcatraz City Cruises, which, under his leadership, introduced the first ever hybrid ferry in 2009. Soon after Alcatraz City Cruises became the first triple ISO-certified passenger maritime operation, Scott also led the Alcatraz City Cruises crew to their highest level of annual ridership while maintaining a dedication to safety and quality which led to Alcatraz City Cruises being named the No. 1 landmark in the U.S. in TripAdvisor’s Traveler’s Choice award. In addition to this experience, Scott spearheaded Hornblower’s Statute City Cruises launch in New York City.

Scott is a certified Captain and resides in New York City.

Dan Russell

X Dan Russell currently serves as Co-Chief Operating Officer of the City Cruises U.S. division, overseeing all areas of the business in 16 ports across the country.

Dan has been a Crew member of City Cruises for over 20 years and has lead teams in operations, sales and marketing, product development and general management.

Dan holds a BBA from Notre Dame and is a certified public accountant. He works out of the Chicago port and resides in the suburbs with his wife and two teenage children.

Christine Metivier

X Christine Metivier is Co-Chief Operating Officer of the City Cruises U.S. division, overseeing all areas of the business in 16 ports across the country.

Christine has over two decades of sales and operations experience. She began her career at the Boston port of City Cruises before transferring to the New York City port. Christine held various positions throughout the organization including a position in Event Management, Sales Director, General Manager, and Regional Vice President.

Christine received her Bachelor of Science degree from UMASS Amherst and works out of the New York City office. She resides in New Jersey with her husband and labradoodle.

Nasi Peretz

X A graduate of the University of Southern California’s Viterbi School of Engineering in Computer Engineering & Computer Science for both undergrad and grad. Created WestsideRentals.com along with Mark Verge and Kevin Miller, 70+ employees which after 15 years was sold to Apartments.com/Costar (CSGP on Nasdaq). Then created Ticketmob.com with Scot Richardson which was acquired in December of 2012 by Cvent (CVT on Nasdaq) and after 6 years of expanding that ticketing company moved to Ticketmaster/LiveNation where he created Taylor Swift’s ticketing platform for the largest concert series in Ticketmaster history. Now Chief Technology Officer at the Hornblower Group after serving as the Vice President of Engineering for two years.

‘Sin City Tow’ digs for the absolute worst of Las Vegas

The new Discovery Channel reality series seems to go out of its way to make Las Vegas look like the worst place on Earth.

Our fair city hasn’t looked this bleak since Nicolas Cage drank himself to death in “Leaving Las Vegas” — and most of that was filmed in Laughlin.

The reality series “Sin City Tow,” premiering at 9 p.m. Tuesday on Discovery Channel, follows the workers at The Tow Truck Company and Ashley’s Towing as they retrieve cars in and around the resort corridor.

For the most part, it’s fine.

The drivers open up about hustling to collect their bounties. At The Tow Truck Company, that’s $75 for a regular tow, $140.68 as a “drop fee” to release a car before it’s towed, and $600 to tow a big rig and its trailer.

And the dangers inherent to the job are front and center, as the drivers are cursed at, threatened and swung upon.

But, wow, does “Sin City Tow” seem to go out of its way to make Las Vegas look like the worst place on Earth.

There’s a “10 a.m. stripper fight” and a grown man dressed like a baby, complete with a giant diaper — and that’s just in the intro.

Right out of the gate, a driver named Jeremy gets a call about a Nissan Armada parked in a fire lane near The Orleans. Once Jeremy’s hooked up the car and lifted its rear wheels off the ground, a man crawls out of the backseat with his pants around his ankles. He’s followed by a woman reaching for her fur coat. The guy says he just maxed out his credit card buying chips — always a good move — but offers Jeremy $400 worth of those chips to cover the drop fee.

The whole thing feels every bit as real as it sounds.

“Three days ago,” one of them says, “these two German girls took me back to they hotel room and did me the freakiest I’ve ever been in my life.”

Well, OK then. But what does that have to do with towing?

“Don’t bring your kids here,” a showgirl impersonator declares. “Just sayin’.”

“It’s a fantasy land,” a tow truck driver named Elmer says. “You can pretty much do whatever you want.”

No, Elmer, you can’t. You should know better than that.

“Sin City Tow’s” producers clearly don’t.

Jake Gyllenhaal and Jeanne Cadieu are enjoying the fresh air.

The 43-year-old actor and his girlfriend, 28, were spotted out and about in New York City on Sunday, June 16, dressed casually as they walked side by side.

Gyllenhaal was outfitted in a gray T-shirt, loose-fitting khaki pants and gray sneakers, completing the look in black sunglasses and a backwards baseball cap.

Cadieu went equally low key in sunglasses and khaki-colored jeans, red sneakers, a baseball cap and a yellow tee that read "EAT YOUR VEGGIES," in blue block lettering.

Gyllenhaal was first linked to Cadieu, a French model, in late 2018, when they were  spotted on walks together  in New York City and Paris.

Until making their  first joint red-carpet appearance  in September 2021, the pair kept their relationship extremely private. They attended a screening of  The Lost Daughter  at the 2021 New York Film Festival, in support of Maggie Gyllenhaal ’s directorial debut. According to the actor, Cadieu was  excited to support  her boyfriend’s sister.

"My sister grabbed her, pulled her on that red carpet , which I think neither of us are really inclined to, you know, go on — even me," Gyllenhaal shared during an appearance on SiriusXM's  The Howard Stern Show . "And to be there to support my sister was what we're there to do and I was like, 'Oh yeah, this is family.' "

The couple have walked plenty of red carpets together since, including an anniversary screening of  The Innocent  at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival and a screening of Gyllenhaal's film  Road House earlier this year.

And there may be wedding bells in the couple's future. In a recent interview with  The Hollywood Reporter , Gyllenhaal was asked when they planned to say "I do" — and he had a playful response.

“I’m supposed to tell  The Hollywood Reporter  that?” the Donnie Darko actor joked, adding, “I’m not going to give you timing.”

Though, he continued, “I think we all get into that space of work, work, work, and for a long time, my career took precedence."

"But I’m at a point in my life where I realize that family really is the only thing that matters to me," Gyllenhaal added.

Diddy's key to New York City rescinded after Cassie Ventura assault video

Sean "Diddy" Combs ' key to New York City has officially been rescinded less than a year after it was issued.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams ' office confirmed to USA TODAY on Sunday that the key bestowed upon Diddy in September has been revoked after surveillance footage surfaced that shows the embattled rapper assaulting his then-girlfriend, Cassie Ventura, in a hotel hallway in 2016.

In a letter sent to Diddy dated June 4, Adams said he was "deeply disturbed" by the video footage and asked him to immediately return the key.

"I strongly condemn these actions and stand in solidarity with all survivors of domestic and gender-based violence," the mayor wrote in the letter, which was shared with USA TODAY. "Our city has worked tirelessly to make sure survivors are heard and seen by our administration."

The key to New York City is described as "a beloved symbol of civic recognition and gratitude reserved for individuals whose service to the public and the common good rises to the highest level of achievement."

But Adams said a committee recommended revoking the key from the music mogul, who since last year has faced multiple allegations of sexual assault.

According to Fabien Levy, deputy mayor for communications, Adams' office received the key back on June 10.

Diddy, 54, was honored with the key to New York City in a ceremony held in Times Square on Sept. 15. "I'm a New York boy, and I just got to key to the city, and everything is just a little surreal right now," he said at the time.

While introducing Diddy, Adams said that "the bad boy of entertainment is getting the key to the city from the bad boy of politics."

Two months later, Ventura sued Diddy for alleged rape , abuse and sex trafficking, and the Bad Boy Records founder subsequently faced additional sexual abuse allegations . Ventura's suit was settled one day after being filed. Diddy's homes were later raided by law enforcement .

In May, surveillance video obtained by CNN showed Diddy assaulting Ventura at a hotel. After the footage's release, Diddy issued an apology without mentioning Ventura's name.

"My behavior on that video is inexcusable," he said. "I take full responsibility for my actions ... I'm disgusted. I was disgusted then when I did it, (and) I'm disgusted now."

Earlier this month, Howard University rescinded an honorary degree that was presented to Diddy in 2014.

“Mr. Combs' behavior as captured in a recently released video is so fundamentally incompatible with Howard University's core values and beliefs that he is deemed no longer worthy to hold the institution’s highest honor," a Howard spokesperson said. "The university is unwavering in its opposition to all acts of interpersonal violence."

Fort Myers might float $40 million in bonds to redevelop City of Palms stadium, Midtown

The Fort Myers City Council will continue negotiating with the United Soccer League to put a user back into City of Palms Park and redevelop the surrounding area. 

The decision to continue negotiating was made during a Monday afternoon, June 10 workshop. 

City Manager Marty Lawing told the council an agreement likely hinges on the city being willing to help finance the project by floating $40 million in bonds. The draft agreement calls for the USL to make lease payments to completely cover the annual payments on the bonds. 

“We’d like to have direction on that before we go much further,” Lawing said. 

Fort Myers councilman wants "iron-clad" deal

Councilman Fred Burson was clearly feeling the old adage "once bitten, twice shy." 

“All of us were here on council when the Red Sox stiffed us,” he said. “We ended up paying for a dozen years with no money from the Red Sox.” 

The Sox played at City of Palms until 2011, when they threatened Lee County commissioners that they were going to leave. The county quickly folded, agreeing to build an $80 million stadium and facility that became Jet Blue Park. 

The history of Spring Training in Lee County is a lengthy one, with 2025 being its centennial. The area was without Major League Baseball briefly between 1988, when the Kansas City Royals departed historic Terry Park. The county lured the Minnesota Twins with Hammond Stadium in 1991, with the city bringing the Sox to City of Palms a year later. 

Burson is clearly wary of a repeat. 

“Let’s say you walk on us in five years, or five years in you go belly-up,” he said. “I want an iron-clad guarantee.” 

Sawyer Smith, the local attorney representing the USL, said that issue was one he and the league were anticipating. 

United Soccer League VP: "It's not going to flop."

Chris Boyajian, vice president for expansion and real estate for the league, told the council that won’t happen and the league will give the city the iron-clad commitment Burson is demanding. 

“The USL has 70 teams across the nation,” Boyajian said. “It’s not going to flop.” 

The USL was founded in 1986 and has teams in 45 markets nationwide.  It oversees men's, women's and youth soccer leagues and programs. Specific soccer plans for Fort Myers aren't yet concrete.

“We recognize what happened in the past. We are prepared to make it iron-clad.” he said. 

City of Palms stadium would be refurbished to fit 7,000-10,000

The redevelopment deal would cover 25 acres in the city's Midtown — including the stadium and the nearby Skatium — and include high-rise and high-density multifamily development with office, retail, restaurant and hotel uses as well as open recreational space. 

The USL proposes to reconfigure the stadium itself to include seating capacity for as many as 10,000. It would buy 9 acres from the city outright and lease the remaining 16 acres for a 20-year term, with 5-year extension increments after that. 

Rachel Smith, an associate at Sawyer Smith’s law firm, said Burson should keep in mind that the deal would see the redevelopment of 25 acres near the center of the city that badly needs it. She said it would also produce $350 million in private investment. 

Councilmen Liston Bochette, who was not in attendance and spoke through an electronic connection, praised her words. 

“There really are no stadiums being built without public backing,” he said. 

Mayor Kevin Anderson said that he wants to see negotiations continue, and even Burson said he would support a deal if he is satisfied the USL will live up to its commitment. 

“If you can get over that hurdle I’m all for it,” he said. 

The road here has been a rocky one. The bidding process actually saw another soccer organization, Pitch Prime , submit the winning proposal. City Manager Marty Lawing negotiated, and their final and best proposal was laid before the council, which rejected it.

In the meantime, the USL had filed a lawsuit challenging the award . That suit was dismissed when the competing bid was rejected by council.

United Soccer League is already doing business in Southwest Florida. Earlier this year, it announced plans to bring a pro team to Collier, with play beginning at Paradise Coast Sports Complex in 2025.
