What a great show! The music was just as good as I’d hoped, but his storytelling and interaction with the crowd was my favorite part. He had us laughing between each song. We would definitely see him again.

Live Review: Aoife O’Donovan and the Age of Apathy Band + Donovan Woods, Barbican, London – 2nd November 2022

donovan woods uk tour

This show, originally scheduled for May 2020 under the banner Songs and Strings Tour finally took place on a very wet 2nd November this year as part of the Age of Apathy tour.  Aoife O’Donovan was pretty busy through the pandemic, streaming from her Brooklyn town house with her husband and brother-in-law, wassailing with Chris Thile, webcasting from a church and issuing several live recordings as well as a home recorded version of Springsteen’s ‘Nebraska‘ .  She also found the time to record the collection of songs comprising the ‘ Age of Apathy’ album with producer Joe Henry.  Last spring, she wrote and recorded a duet, ‘ IOWA’, with tonight’s support Donovan Woods who we learned tonight that she met in person only at the beginning of the current tour.

Woods rolled up in plaid shirt and woolly hat playing the part of the self-deprecating Canadian folkie and played a funner-than-he-claimed set which featured ‘ Portland Maine’ co-written with and recorded by Tim McGraw.  He left the stage to warm applause.

After the break O’Donovan and band started their set with  an ‘Age of Apathy’ opener, ‘ Galahad’. “You’re a white knight I’m a dark horse” flowing into the “I’m’ alive, I’m alive” chorus as much an affirmation of the renewal of live performance.  ‘Elevators’ is next, nodding to the movement theme that runs through the album. Guitar and fiddle player Isa Burke takes Allison Russell’s part on the Tim O’Brien co-write ‘Prodigal Daughter’. Burke’s playing and singing is a highlight of tonight’s show and complements O’Donovan’s vocal and songs really well.

The set loops back to 2016’s ‘ In The Magic Hour’ with fine versions of the title song along with ‘ Hornets’ and ‘ Porchlight’. The travel theme re-emerges as O’Donovan shares the delights of a journey on National Express before running through two bus songs, the city based ‘ B61’ and the interstate ‘ Lucky Star.’   Again, the band interplay is impressive.  ‘ Age of Apathy‘   moves on to the car but also expresses a longing for days when the news was less pressing and depressing.  It closes with Joni’s ‘ My Old Man‘ on the radio. A gripping ‘ King of All The Birds’ leads into the set closer ‘Passengers’ which wraps the transport, mythical and avian themes together and provides a perfect climax to the show.  O’Donovan’s vocals and delivery were a joy throughout.

Of course, having waited the best part of three years, we weren’t about to let it go there and she was brought back for the encore: a duet of O’Donovan and Woods performing a beautiful version of ‘IOWA’ .

Thanks. Another one I couldn’t get to. It’s a lovely album. Any other band members?

Richard Parkinson

Yes – Ethan Jodziewicz on bass and a drummer who may have been Robin McMillan who is on the ‘Live at the HiFi’ recording but I didn’t catch the name on the band intros. Ms O’Donovan is back in the UK for four dates in February next year (Glasgow, Gateshead, Leeds and London (Kings Place) so hopefully you can catch her then.

LATEST RELEASES

Since he released his first album a decade ago, singer-songwriter Donovan Woods’ blend of folk, country and pop has resonated with audiences all over the world. In recent years, the acclaimed, award-winning singer-songwriter has seen his profile grow with his breakthrough album, Without People.

Touring behind (2020’s) Without People saw Woods play to his largest audiences to date. That included a stint opening for New Jersey-based retro rockers Gaslight Anthem on their recent reunion tour.

Throughout his distinguished career, Donovan Woods has built a devoted following who cling to the acclaimed songwriter’s every word. Never one to mince words, Woods is one of music’s most vulnerable storytellers and on his forthcoming studio album, Donovan takes that a step further. Honest and unflinching, on Things Were Never Good If They’re Not Good Now, his seventh studio album, Woods takes a long look inside and isn’t necessarily thrilled with what he sees. For an artist who isn’t afraid to bear his soul, this is as emotionally gritty as he has ever been.

Long known as a masterful storyteller, Woods is at his absolute best on Things Were Never Good If They’re Not Good Now. Across the album’s 12 sparse, intimate songs, Woods finds himself reflecting on the ups and downs he has been through since 2020. His writing allowed him to open up and address the complexities of life that he has been going through.

The album, he notes, serves as “a funeral to the life he was living.”

Sonically, Woods decided to take a different approach.

“We had our boundaries and made things sound beautiful within them,” he says. “And what’s left is scrappier than Without People, but I feel like moments of creation are much more accessible on this record.”Woods' featured vocals on Dabin & Nurko’s “When This Is Over” veered into anthemic dance pop, and yet he still sounded right at home. On “IOWA,” Woods found a kindred spirit in Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Aoife O’Donovan for a pastoral meditation on dreaming of a place you know doesn’t exist.

Many of the songs that comprise Things Were Never Good If They’re Not Good Now focus on the intricacies of friendships and relationships, and looking at the little moments in life. Co-produced with longtime collaborator James Bunton over much of 2023, the album’s delicate nature is reflected in its lyrics.

The psychology of people’s actions always fascinated Woods and informs much of Things Were Never Good If They’re Not Good Now. Focusing on happy, party feelings doesn’t appeal to him.

Once he gets down these darker paths (“It was a warts and all album in a way that I never had done before”), which he admits can be uncomfortable, the songs flow and are universal.

In particular, on the heart-wrenching “Rosemary”. Co-written with Connor Seidel, “Rosemary” contemplates what happens in the aftermath of a heated argument.

“Have you ever had a fight by text message? And it’s long, and existential,” he says. “Someone did something wrong and maybe that’s it.” Continuing, he explains that “Rosemary” is about “finally admitting all your faults, showing your actual self and asking, can you still love me? And really wanting an answer either way.”

Not everything is doom and gloom.

On “When Our Friends Come Over,” Woods sings lovingly about a couple who rediscover their affection for one another. Featuring Madi Diaz on vocals, the song highlights how two partners are able to appreciate each other in the presence of others. Even though they're going through a rocky patch, Woods shows how even the tiniest of gestures are the true signs of love.

Throughout an album of heart wrenching songs, none hit harder than “Back for the Funeral.” Taking place in a small town, a group of friends who haven’t seen each other in years return to memorialize a schoolmate after they overdosed on pills.

“There's so much writing done about being back in your hometown and what it does to you,” Woods explains. “But there’s the idea that you only go there with bad news—which can be true—and what it does to your feelings about your hometown.”

However, the song poignantly shows that even though someone may return to their hometown for unfortunate reasons, reconnecting with old friends is a positive byproduct of the circumstance.

As Woods continues to work on himself, Things Were Never Good If They’re Not Good Now is the portrait of a songwriter at his creative best. Addressing the truths and pains of life is never easy, and here, he does so in a way that’s brutally honest. After all, that’s what great songwriters do.

Donovan Woods Announces The Husbandry Tour With Henry Jameson

The tour is kicking off April 7 in Chicago and running through May 6 in Seattle.

pixeltracker

JUNO Award winning singer-songwriter Donovan Woods and songwriter Henry Jameson have announced The Husbandry Tour, a 15-date run of spring performances across the U.S., kicking off April 7 in Chicago and running through May 6 in Seattle.

LATEST NEWS

Discussing their joint cross-country trek, Donovan Woods noted, "I DM'd Henry years ago because I liked all his songs and now it only makes sense for us to hit the road and likely ruin the tenuous beginnings of what could have been a life-long friendship ripe with admiration.

His songs operate at a bachelor's degree reading level and I love all of them. I listen to them while waking and I feel like I'm in a little movie about how I'm special. I will be in the audience every night. So if you're looking to meet or strangle me, this is a great tour for you."

Jamison added, "We're doing this tour because we would like to be friends, but aren't able to express that to each other. So we're tricking ourselves, and everyone else, by having business meetings and calling it a tour, when it's really about joking around and singing together. We are also very excited to have Isabel Pless coming on board as a team member. We all look forward to working together. See you soon."

Never one to remain idle, Woods kicked off 2022 with the release of the Big Hurt Boy EP via his own End Times Music, which included the single, "Leave When You Go" feat. Ralph.

Collaborations with Australian songwriter Ziggy Alberts ("THE SUN & THE SEA") and Natalie Taylor ("Hang On To Me") followed. Woods spent much of the second half of the year on the road, supporting Matt Nathanson in the U.S., who's song "Boston Accent" Woods co-wrote. Followed by EU/UK dates with Aoife O'Donovan, who Woods has also collaborated with, the two penning Woods' 2021 single "IOWA."

With Big Hurt Boy, Woods looked to capture more of an 'undone' quality, wanting to "get back to the feeling that my early recordings had," notes the winner of the 2019 JUNO Award for 'Contemporary Roots Album' (for Both Ways). And yet, while Big Hurt Boy was recorded largely live, harnessing the electricity of a roomful of musicians laying down tracks in the studio, the collection brims with some of the luminous production touches Woods has been adding to this repertoire lately, such as on "I Won't Mention It Again," which opens featuring just Woods on banjo and vocals, before fading into a spectral backdrop of electronic textures and layers of lush harmonies. The collection's first single, "I Hope You Change Your Mind," was co-written with David Hodges (Maren Morris, Carrie Underwood, Ed Sheeran).

Along with his work as an in-demand songwriter, whose work has been recorded by the likes of Tim McGraw ("Portland, Maine") and Lady A's Charles Kelley ("Leaving Nashville"), and co-writes with a diverse group of songwriters, such as Tom Douglas, Lori McKenna, Brandy Clark, Ashley Monroe, Dustin Christensen, Femke Weidema, Steve Robson, and Ed Robertson (Barenaked Ladies), a budding truth about Woods has emerged: as respected as he is as a solo artist, he's evolving and upending our expectations of how his music sounds.

His songs have grown more dimensional, emboldened by new sonic landscapes, reminding us that classic songwriting transcends genre.

Today, Donovan Woods is revealing a run of tour dates for Spring of 2022 that will begin in his childhood home of Sarnia, ON and head out West to Vancouver before returning to Toronto’s Massey Hall. Full tour dates can be found below and tickets for all shows are available here.

Accompanying the announcement is a new single from Woods, “Here in Chicago” , co-written with Australian pop singer-songwriter Hayley Warner (Katy Perry, Jojo) and produced by Robyn Dell’Unto . The track “discusses one of my favourite subjects,” says Woods. “It’s about learning that someone you still have feelings for is suddenly in the same town as you for the night, and the inevitable thoughts and chain of events that might set into motion.”

Recently, Woods and his long-time manager Michelle Szeto announced their new label, End X Music (End Times Music) . The Toronto / Nashville based imprint, distributed by The Orchard, also signed its first artist, Cassidy Mann , and released her new single “Election Night”.

“Since Donovan and I started working together over five years ago, the idea of sharing what we’ve learned and the relationships we’ve built with another artist has always thrilled us,” says Szeto. “We never questioned the hard work that would come with it, but rather, we didn’t think we would ever agree on an artist. When we independently came across Cassidy and sent her music to one another, it was a coincidence we couldn’t ignore. Cassidy’s songwriting and production skills are beyond her years, and we’ve been endlessly impressed with her creative instincts.”

MORE ABOUT DONOVAN WOODS Late at night, when a hush fell over the house after his kids went to bed, Donovan Woods got to work on his latest album, Without People . In a makeshift recording studio at his Toronto home, the acclaimed Canadian singer-songwriter tracked his vocals and guitar alone and then emailed files to producer James Bunton . As Woods’ new songs took shape, backing musicians sketched out their own parts in isolation from their respective homes.

This is not how Woods, winner of the 2019 JUNO Award for Contemporary Roots Album (for Both Ways ) and whose global streams have surpassed 220 million, prefers to create music. “So much of what I like about making records is the spontaneity of making music in a room together, and we missed that,” Woods says. “But we tried our best to re-create that feeling.”

Out now on Wood’s own Meant Well label, Without People has been acclaimed as “a nuanced experience” (American Songwriter), a thoughtful exploration of “fleeting interpersonal moments now under the microscope” (NPR/KUTX) and “various aspects of human connection” (Rolling Stone), and for striking “a gentle, poignant note” (Billboard). It was so successful, in fact, that it led to a deluxe edition in 2021 and digital streams well beyond 20 million.

As an in-demand songwriter whose work has been recorded by the likes of Tim McGraw (“Portland, Maine”) and Lady A’s Charles Kelley (“Leaving Nashville”), Woods enlisted a who’s who of fellow songwriters for Without People : Ashley Monroe, Dustin Christensen, Femke Weidema, and Ed Robertson (Barenaked Ladies), among others.

Those collaborations highlighted a growing truth about Woods: As respected as he is as a solo artist, he continues to evolve and work with musicians across disparate genres. As he does so, his own songs have become more dimensional as he digs into new sonic textures.

Woods’ featured vocals on Dabin & Nurko’s “When This Is Over” glide into anthemic dance pop, and yet Woods still sounds right at home. For “IOWA” , a bucolic meditation on dreaming of a place you know doesn’t exist, Woods found a kindred spirit in Grammy Award -winning singer-songwriter Aoife O’Donovan . Together they find power in grace and economy as their voices entwine.

Equally at home in folk and country music — and even electronic pop, it now seems — Woods mines small moments to find greater truths on his latest album.

“I dove in deeper on this album than I ever have,” Woods says, “and I can say that I tried my hardest to write truthfully about the people I’ve loved and the things I did wrong, and add my little verse to the story of what it feels like to be a person.”
