Sporting KC Youth Soccer Partners with WorldStrides Sports for International Sports Tours

WorldStrides Sports , the nation’s largest and most trusted provider of educational sports travel and experiences, announced it is partnering with Sporting Kansas City Youth Soccer to deliver international soccer tours throughout their organization.

Sporting KC Youth Soccer is committed to inspiring and uniting communities through the sport of soccer by providing personalized experiences with the club in Kansas City and across the Midwest. Sporting KC Youth Soccer delivers on its commitment through a combination of six components that support the overall purpose and mission: Sporting Club Network, Academy Affiliates, Camps & Programs, Tournaments, Leagues, and Sporting Fields + Athletics.

Founded in 2011, Sporting KC Academy Affiliate network connects nearly 25,000 youth players from 15 soccer clubs located across seven Midwest states. The affiliation offers the clubs a pro player development pathway, coaching education programs, club experiences and events, and unparalleled access to the professional club.

Teams taking part in the international trips to several locations in Europe can expect to play high level sides while visiting professional stadiums and fixtures. The players, ages 11 to 19, will also tour the nearby cities and learn from WorldStrides’ expert guides.

“We are proud to announce our partnership with WorldStrides,” said Dan Popik, Vice President of Youth Sports Properties at Sporting Kansas City. “We’re excited to offer international travel experiences to all players across our 15 Sporting KC Academy Affiliate clubs. WorldStrides has a history of providing exceptional trips across the globe which will make these trips once-in-a-lifetime opportunities for our players.”

“WorldStrides Sports is absolutely thrilled to offer Sporting Kansas City Youth Soccer and their affiliates the opportunity to   travel abroad in 2024 and beyond,” said Eric McAleer, Senior Vice President of WorldStrides Sports Programs.

“WorldStrides Sports is a longtime believer in the value international travel has on the development of players both on and off the field, and this opportunity to develop programs for so many different types of athletes is an incredible opportunity to expand our mission.”

FULL-TIME : The Sounders moved up to fifth and just two points out of second in the Western Conference with a 2-0 win over Sporting KC on Sunday. Jackson Ragen and Paul Rothrock scored goals with Jordan Morris picking up an assist.

LINEUPS : There are three changes to the Sounders lineup from last week, with Stefan Frei returning to goal, Obed Vargas returning from international duty and Georgi Minoungou replacing Pedro de la Vega, who is on the bench.

The final push to the playoffs starts right about now for the Seattle Sounders, as they host the first of three consecutive home games that will likely determine where they finish in the Western Conference standings. If they can claim all nine points, they’ll be set up very nicely to finish in the top four spots and claim home-field advantage in the first round. If they slip in any of them, they’ll likely be battling just to stay out of the play-in game.

The first of these games is against Sporting KC, a team that has struggled this year but who has a history of success at Lumen Field. Sporting KC have gone 4-1-0 in their last five trips to Seattle, including a 2-1 win here last year. Overall, the two teams are 12-12-4 against one another in all competitions.

A Sounders win today would push them up to fifth and just one point out of third in the Western Conference standings, while a loss would leave them in seventh, just three points ahead of the play-in game with each of the teams chasing them having a game in hand.

  • The Sounders have conceded fewer home goals (12) than any other team in MLS this year. They also conceded the fewest home goals last year.
  • With his hat trick last week, Albert Rusnák now has 20 goal contributions (8 goals, 12 assists) during the MLS season. He’s the ninth Sounder to accomplish that feat and the first since Nicolás Lodeiro did it in 2018.
  • Jordan Morris set a career high with his 15th goal across all competitions last week. He had previously scored 14 in a season twice (2016, 2023).
  • Mauro Rosales (2011-2013) will be honored as a Sounders Legend before today’s game.

Recap | Cannon makes Rapids debut, Edwards opens MLS account in road loss to Sporting KC

The Colorado Rapids (14-10-5, 49 pts.) suffered their first regular-season loss to Sporting Kansas City (8-15-7, 31 pts.) since May 2022, and their first loss in league play since July 17, 2024. Michael Edwards’ first MLS goal was the lone score for the Rapids as they turn their focus to Saturday at home against Toronto FC.

With the Rapids looking to secure a spot in the 2024 MLS Cup Playoffs and Kansas City attempting to keep their postseason hopes alive, there was all to play for on a beautiful Wednesday night in Kansas City. Colorado had won the first meeting against SKC in July and came to town eyeing the regular-season sweep.

The pace of play to start the match was slow, with both sides looking to gain their footing early on. The Rapids created chances through maintained possession, but the home side would strike first eight minutes in.

Following an attacking push, a cross from Kansas City led to Alan Pulido finding himself with the ball at the top of the eighteen. The forward then took a shot across his body into the lower left corner of the net to put his side up 1-0.

Colorado would threaten to strike back during the remainder of the first half but were unable to find an equalizer. Goalkeeper Zack Steffen stood strong in net to limit the damage as the two sides went into the halftime break with the same 1-0 scoreline.

Following the break, Kansas City would grab an early goal yet again. Four minutes in, Pulido netted his second goal of the match to double the lead.

The home side would grab a third in the 69th minute. Erik Thommy placed a shot into the bottom right corner for the three-goal lead with around 20 minutes to go.

The Rapids would grab one back six minutes later in the 75th minute. After a corner kick, captain Keegan Rosenberry sent in a cross that found the feet of Edwards, who tapped it home for Colorado’s first of the night.

The goal was Edwards’ first of his MLS career in his third career start. Rosenberry logged his first assist of the season on the goal.

Kansas City would round out the match’s scoring in the 82nd minute, when Thommy found the back of the net for his second of the night.

Reggie Cannon made his first appearance since signing with the club last week. The defender logged 15 minutes in the match after being subbed on in the 75th minute.

Head Coach Chris Armas shared a positive outlook despite the result: “We put ourselves in a good spot for the playoff push. We're probably a win or two away from the playoffs. We get home and regroup quickly and get right back where we've been all year.”

The Rapids return home for a matchup with Toronto FC on Saturday, September 21. Kickoff at DICK’S Sporting Good’s Park is set for 7:30 p.m. MT (Apple TV - MLS Season Pass, Altitude Sports Radio 950AM).

Recap: Pulido and Thommy braces power Sporting to 4-1 win over Colorado

Braces from Alan Pulido and Erik Thommy propelled Sporting Kansas City (8-15-7, 31 points) to a resounding 4-1 victory over the Colorado Rapids (14-10-5, 47 points) on Wednesday night at Children’s Mercy Park.

Sporting’s third consecutive home win in all competitions saw the hosts thoroughly outplay their Western Conference counterparts from start to finish, scoring four goals in an MLS match for the first time since June 2023 and totaling 31 shot attempts, fifth most in club regular season history. With Pulido and Thommy bagging two goals apiece, it was also the first time since April 2019 that Sporting had two players score twice in the same MLS match.

Manager Peter Vermes’ men will look to continue their winning ways on Saturday when regional rival Minnesota United FC (11-12-6, 39 points) visits Children’s Mercy Park for a 7:30 p.m. CT kickoff. Tickets for the contest are available at SeatGeek.com with live broadcasts on MLS Season Pass via Apple TV, Sports Radio 810 WHB and La Grande 1340 AM.

With his team navigating a stretch of five matches in 14 days—including the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Final next Wednesday at LAFC—Vermes deployed a lineup that featured seven changes from Sunday’s 2-0 loss at Seattle Sounders FC. Among the fresh faces was left back Logan Ndenbe, who made his 100th professional club appearance and his first MLS start since last November after overcoming an ACL injury.

Ndenbe created Sporting’s first of many chances on Wednesday with a clever cutback pass from the left side in the fourth minute, but William Agada’s first time effort at the top of the box sailed wayward. Four minutes later, however, Sporting broke through as Pulido pounced on a loose ball 15 yards from goal and fired low into the left corner to give his side an early lead.

Kansas City’s attacking appetite remained evident as Agada had a breakaway attempt blocked by the sliding Michael Edwards, Pulido dragged a shot wide from a tight angle and Stephen Afrifa cut centrally before seeing his shot smothered all before the 20-minute mark. Near the half-hour juncture, midfielder Memo Rodriguez went agonizingly close to scoring from long range with a 25-yard piledriver that screamed inches wide of the left post.

The Rapids stayed on the backfoot and were fortunate not to concede again before the break. Afrifa had a stinging drive touched over the crossbar by Colorado goalkeeper Zack Steffen before Agada’s header off a Johnny Russell corner kick rattled the woodwork. Agada was again unfortunate not to score on the cusp of intermission, lunging to meet a driven Russell cross that was just beyond his reach.

Sporting found the second goal they deserved in the 49th minute. Holding the ball up on the left edge of the box, Afrifa squeezed a pass through to Pulido, who evaded multiple tacklers near the penalty spot before slotting past Steffen for his second goal of the night. In doing so, the Mexican striker—who has five goal involvements in his last five MLS matches—recorded his seventh multi-goal match in the MLS regular season, tying teammate Russell and Preki for third most in club history. With eight goals and five assists in all competitions, Pulido’s 13 total goal contributions this year are second most on the team behind Agada’s 15.

Smelling blood in the water, Sporting hunted a third and nearly found it before the hour mark. Pulido and Ndenbe both forced saves from Steffen before Afrifa settled a diagonal ball from Thomy and uncorked a volley that narrowly missed the target.

With 69 minutes played, Thommy pushed the scoreline to 3-0 by scoring shortly after entering as a substitute alongside Daniel Salloi and Tim Leibold. Sporting broke forward with numbers as Agada charged centrally and spread the ball left to Thommy, who cut the ball onto his patented right peg and picked out the far right corner with expert precision. Sporting has now scored three or more goals in 12 of the club’s last 28 regular season home games dating back to May 13, 2023.

Colorado seldom threatened Sporting’s net, but Edwards provided the visitors a consolation prize with his first career MLS goal in the 75th minute. After Sporting failed to clear a corner kick, Keegan Rosenberry got a touch on the ball and Edwards applied the finish at close range to make the score 3-1.

Sporting restored its three-goal cushion in the 82nd minute. Zorhan Bassong’s searching long ball over the top found Agada, who muscled off a defender and poked a pass to Salloi at the top of the box. The Hungarian then slid a clever pass into the path of the overlapping Thommy, who sent a left-footed strike low past Steffen for his MLS career-high seventh goal of the year. It was the German’s second brace of the season after his double against Inter Miami CF at Arrowhead Stadium on April 13, and it gave Salloi the fifth multi-assist game of his MLS career.

The final flashbulb moment of the game came in the 87th minute when Sporting substitute Remi Walter did brilliantly to extinguish the danger of a Colorado breakaway, sprinting back to block an Omir Fernandez shot that was destined for an empty net after goalkeeper John Pulskamp was bypassed. The 4-1 scoreline would hold to the final whistle as Sporting secured its second straight MLS home win by a three-goal margin.

After hosting Minnesota on Saturday, Sporting will venture to Los Angeles next week for a colossal showdown with LAFC in the 2024 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Final. Kickoff next Wednesday at BMO Stadium is slated for 9:30 p.m. CT with a free stream on Apple TV. Sporting will be competing for a record-tying fifth Open Cup title, while LAFC is playing for its first tournament championship.
