Florence + The Machine paints the Proms blood red

F lorence Welch is known for her commanding stage presence - spiralling across the stage in a blur of silks and dancing so hard she’s prone to breaking bones .

But for her debut at the BBC Proms, the flame-haired singer was unusually restrained. She barely moved from behind her microphone stand, letting the music convey the drama instead.

The concert was an orchestral revamp of Florence +The Machine's Brit Award-winning debut album Lungs, now 15 years old, and a document of the star's "messy and chaotic" teenage years.

Its wildly combustible songs were the perfect material for Jules Buckley’s orchestra, who ramped up the album's gothic overtones with harpsichords, lutes and long crescendos of percussion.

Kiss With A Fist became a sort of witchy hoedown, Blinding opened with a sinister cacophony of whispered incantations, and You Got The Love made ample use of the Royal Albert Hall's "Voice of Jupiter" pipe organ.

Enhancing the eerie mood, the venue was bathed in blood-red lights throughout the concert, with Florence in a flowing claret dress, her sleeves swaying in time to the music.

The audience got into the mood, too, wearing pre-Raphaelite dresses, Toreodor jackets, crowns of flowers and, in one case, dressing head-to-toe in fairy lights.

It was the perfect marriage of material and setting. "Renaissance meets rock," as Radio 3 presenter Georgia Mann put it.

Billed as Symphony Of Lungs, the concert was the most in-demand Prom of the 2024 season.

The initial release of tickets in May was snapped up in a matter of hours, and more than 20,000 people joined the online queue for on-the-day tickets, which cost just £8, on Wednesday morning.

The concert marked Florence + The Machine's only UK show of 2024, in what was supposed to be a year off.

“When [the invitation] came in, they were like, ‘We know you’re off, but would you…?’ and I was like, ‘Yes!’” she told Vogue magazine .

The orchestral score was put together over several months of drafts, revisions, and rehearsals, overseen by Jules Buckley, the conductor who’s been charged with “ripping up the Proms’ rulebook”.

Over the past decade, he has staged concerts based on Stevie Wonder and Nick Drake’s music, as well as Proms dedicated to grime and dance music.

He said Florence's music was especially well-suited to the orchestral treatment.

"You’ve got this incredible virtuosic harp playing, you’ve got a whole swathe of percussion, and you’ve got the harmonic sequences of the songs, which are often very romantic," he told BBC Radio 4's Today programme ahead of the concert.

"We’re not planning on making it all dainty and quaint. We’re putting the pedal down."

He wasn't exaggerating.

When classical music meets pop, it often feels like the songs are drowning in molasses.

But Buckley respected what Florence called the “handmade, personal, rough around the edges” arrangements she'd written at the start of her career; letting the melodies breathe, and holding the orchestra back until they were really needed.

Highlights included a muscular version of Drumming Song, with soaring harmonies from the London Contemporary Voices Choir; and a joyfully enormous arrangement of Cosmic Love.

Girl With One Eye, in which Florence plucks out a love rival's eyeball, was punctuated by blasts of tuba and a twinkling harpsichord - accentuating the dark comedy of the lyric with a musical nod to the Addams Family theme.

And the hit singles Dog Days Are Over and Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up)

The singer seemed to be relishing the chance to revisit her old songs, even performing Howl - a track she'd previously banished from her repertoire " because it's really hard on my voice ".

There was only one minor mis-step, when she launched into the bridge of Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up) too early.

"I've been practicing my cues with Jules all day and I'm still a little confused sometimes," she said, laughing it off.

"Jules says, 'You’re coming in in eight bars', and I’m like, 'what does that mean?!'"

If the audience noticed those nerves, they didn't care.

As they bounced to a fevered version of Dog Days Are Over, and swooned to the gothic romance of Between Two Lungs, it was clear why Florence still inspires such devotion.

Fifteen years after Lungs made her a star, the power of her voice and the passion of her lyrics are undimmed.

I was left with just one question: Why has she never recorded a Bond theme?

1. Drumming Song

2. My Boy Builds Coffins

3. You’ve Got the Love

4. Bird Song

5. Swimming

6. I’m Not Calling You a Liar

7. Kiss with A Fist

9. Girl with One Eye

10. Hardest of Hearts

11. Rabbit Heart

12. Blinding

13. Hurricane Drunk

14. Cosmic Love

15. Between Two Lungs

16. Dog Days

17. Falling

See Florence and the Machine Give Debut Album ‘Lungs’ the Symphony Treatment

By Tomás Mier

Florence and the Machine is remembering its first album — but backed by an orchestra! Last night, Florence Welch was joined by the BBC Orchestra for a symphonic reimagining of the group’s debut album, Lungs .

The show, called “Symphony of Lungs,” was part of BBC Proms and saw Welch sing the 2009 album in its entirety from Royal Albert Hall for her only full concert of the year.

“This was an album created with so much feeling,” she told the crowd. “I never thought anyone could add more feeling to it.”

Florence + the Machine’s Symphony of Lungs, with Jules Buckley and his Orchestra for BBC Proms. To hear Lungs live, not just in all its splendour but enhanced by glorious orchestral arrangements, was no less meaningful than to hear it for the first time. pic.twitter.com/Pvee7eZWD1 — Jay / Juliano Zaffino (@jayzaff) September 12, 2024

florence and the machine tour 2024

I enjoyed this very much.

“Live at the BBC Proms: Florence + The Machine joins Jules Buckley and his Orchestra for a fresh take on the BRIT Award-winning Lungs.”

Florence + The Machine Jules Buckley Orchestra Jules Buckley

“‘As grand and mysterious as the Big Bang itself’ concluded Pitchfork when Florence Welch – aka Florence + The Machine – released her debut album 15 years ago, a year after attracting the attention of BBC Music Introducing. The BRIT Award-winning Lungs immediately announced Florence as an artist of huge courage, theatricality and vocal abilities – earning her a place on BBC Radio 1’s prestigious ‘Sound of …’ list. For her Proms debut, she joins Jules Buckley and his Orchestra for a celebration of Lungs, and of the compelling poetry and music of this singular artist in whom the darkly gothic meets all that glistens.”

Molly Hawkins, Creative Director of the BBC Florence + The Machine said:  “BBC Proms is such an important piece of the story of British music, it was such an honor to work on this show and with Florence and the wonderfully talented Jules Buckley. The show, to me, was an opportunity for the Florence of now to look back at the young woman who made this seminal album, Florence’s debut,  Lungs,  and bring her into this incredible moment in which her dreams have come true. I wanted to preserve the sense of fun drama and of things being handmade from the original album into the show. We worked with London costumers Allen & Adcock who hand-made costumes for the choir based on an interpolation of the album cover by Andrea Zanatelli. They also costumed the orchestra in hand-dyed shirts with hand tied bows.”

About as much relevance to the Proms tradition as a group of songs from Wolf’s Italianisches Liederbuch would be at Glastonbury. That distant groan listeners may have heard, I suspect, was that of Sir Henry Wood turning in his grave. Thank God there are those of us who still remember what the Proms was, and why it was set up in the first place, before witnessing its current systematic destruction.

Stevie wonder announces 2024 tour, msg concert. get tickets today.

Stevie Wonder sings while playing the piano.

“Sir Duke” has returned to his rightful throne.

For the first time since fall 2018, Stevie Wonder is embarking on a nationwide tour.

On this brief go-round, the 25-time Grammy winner will perform at ten arenas all over North America as part of his ‘Sing Your Song! As We Fix Our Nation’s Broken Heart’ tour , which shares a name with his recently-released, politically-charged single.

He’s not skipping New York, either.

The “Superstition” singer is slated to swoop into New York City’s Madison Square Garden on Thursday, Oct. 10.

Wonder’s timing for the last-minute tour is no mistake. He scheduled these concerts at “the height of a critical election season and a pivotal juncture in American politics and culture” to share his message of “joy over anger, kindness over recrimination, peace over war,” according to a press release.

Prior to the announcement, the 74-year-old delivered an emphatic speech at the 2024 Democratic National Convention where he urged “now is the moment to understand where we are and what it will take to win: win the broken hearts, win the disenchanted, win the angry spirits — now is the time.”

Fans can purchase tickets for all upcoming ‘Sing Your Song!’ shows on sites like Vivid Seats; the official on-sale is Friday, Sept. 20.

Vivid Seats is a secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

They have a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and will be delivered before the event.

At all gigs, the 1989 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee is giving away a designated amount of complimentary tickets “as a special thank you to those in our communities who are already working tirelessly to fix our nation’s broken heart.”

Florence Welch is the lead singer and frontwoman of the indie band Florence + The Machine, formed in South London, UK, in 2007.

Known for a unique and dreamy blend of folk, art-pop, indie rock, and neo soul, as well as her stirring and ethereal live performances, Welch has been likened to artists such as Adele, Amy Winehouse, and Ellie Goulding.

Florence + The Machine is a band composed of Welch, pianist Isabella Summers, Robert Ackroyd (guitar), Tom Monger (harp), Mark Saunders (bass), and a rotating cast of other artists. Welch credits her bandmates with helping unlock her creative process, as they have been so tuned-in to each others’ musical abilities for so long that they naturally know what she’s hoping for in each new song.

The band’s name came from Welch’s teenage years, when she collaborated with Isabella “Machine” Summers. For a while, the two performed as Florence Robot/Isa Machine — a private joke that eventually stuck in slightly altered form.

With huge encouragement from the BBC, Florence received early critical acclaim and attention from UK audiences as BBC Music Introducing strongly promoted the band. The band’s debut album, Lungs, was released on July 6, 2009, and reached the number two slot in the UK Album Chart, retaining the position for five consecutive weeks. It finally reached the number one position on the album chart on January 17, 2010. By October 2010, Lungs had spent a total of 65 consecutive weeks in the top 40 album charts.

Notable singles from the album included “Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up),” “Kiss With A Fist,” and “Dog Days Are Over,” with the songs being featured on films and television series like Jennifer’s Body, 90210, Gossip Girl, Glee, and Skins.

Undoubtedly, the biggest hit single released from Lungs was the cover of The Source and Candi Staton’s 1986 single “You’ve Got The Love.” The track was later also released in collaboration with UK grime rapper Dizzee Rascal under the title, “You’ve Got The Dirtee Love,” following Welch and Dizzee’s 2010 Brit Award performance of the mash-up.

The band’s second studio album, Ceremonials, was preceded by a demo session in January 2010 at a small studio in London. Several producers vied for the chance to produce it, but Welch rejected their offers because she was after a new sound: something darker, heavier, more explosive, and grittier. The band had the rest of the year to work sporadically on the music, since they were out on the road touring heavily.

When the group did record, it happened between January and April 2011 at Abbey Road Studios with producer Paul Epworth, who co-wrote seven of the album’s tracks. Other co-writers included Kid Harpoon and Summers. Welch had to record many of the vocal tracks in various U.S. studios between shows on her tour.

Ceremonials featured singles “Shake It Out” and “What The Water Gave Me,” with the latter video receiving an outstanding 1.5 million views on YouTube in just two days alongside the track on iTunes in August 2011. The fourth single for the album, a remix of “Spectrum (Say My Name)” by Scotland’s Calvin Harris, became the band’s first number-one hit in the UK.

Unsurprisingly, Ceremonials reached number one on the UK Album Chart and number six on the U.S. Billboard 200. Furthermore, Florence + The Machine was honored with nominations for two Brit Awards: British Album of the Year and Best British Female Artist.

2012 was a year of rest for Florence + The Machine after having gone all out for the past half-decade. By the end of December 2012, Ceremonials had received a nomination for Best Pop Vocal Album.

In June 2014, Welch revealed that the band was working on its third studio album. Seven months later, the band performed the new album in its entirety to a crowd in a private London show. The next day, a music video for the title track, “How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful,” dropped, followed by another video for the song “St. Jude.”

When How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful finally dropped on May 29, it rose to the number-one spot on the UK Albums Chart — the band’s third time enjoying the honor — and hit number one on the U.S. Billboard 200. It was nominated five times for the Grammys. That year, the band headlined Glastonbury Festival, and its set received critical acclaim from a number of outlets. In 2016, Florence and the Machine released a short film called The Odyssey, which combined all of the album’s music videos into one narrative structure.

May 2017 saw an announcement of yet another studio album, High as Hope. During this period, then-drummer Christopher Hayden left the band, but the music didn’t stop: singles like “Sky Full of Song” and “Hunger” came in April and May of 2018. Florence + The Machine stayed busy with tours and song-crafting through the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, when it released “Light of Love” to support the Intensive Care Society.

By early 2022, the band was back on the road, headlining festivals like Madrid’s Mad Cool. The band’s fans began receiving letters with a cryptic print entitled “King – Chapter 1,” which led to speculation of a new single. Welch confirmed the rumors on February 22 on her Instagram account. “King,” the new single, came out the next day along with a music video. “Heaven Is Here” followed on March 7. Dance Fever, the fifth studio album, was released on May 13 and immediately shot to the number-one spot in the UK.

Live-Bewertungen

Only a few hours after I wrote about Hozier performing one of the most intimate sets I had ever experienced at Red Rocks, Florence Welsh completely redefined the word ‘intimacy’. The 28-year-old vocalist of Florence + the Machine had been photographed in meltdown mode at the Montreal airport just days prior, so it came as no shock when she decided do to something a little different on the last date of her current tour. Welsh has been pretty honest about her personal challenges with the road. She’s described feelings of loneliness and exhaustion that border on depression. I’m sure she found solace in the fact that her vocal chords held strong this time around (she damaged them not long before her Red Rocks show in 2012), but she seemed slightly unraveled by the time she took the stage for a special acoustic set on Monday night.

Large scale performances and frayed nerves usually equal disaster, but as Florence’s emotions danced around her windswept red curls, she used her sweet sorrow to create an air of melancholy that infected the crowd during her stripped-down set. The audience gained another ounce of empathy with each breath…thus absorbing her sadness and eradicating any loneliness she might have been feeling. The science was exact, so by the time the 12-piece ensemble went into full effect for ‘the electric era’, we had become her friends, her confidants, and her choir. The collective energy was enough to bring the rocks crumbling down on our heads, but lucky for us (and the City of Denver) Florence held things together with the pure power of voice. There wasn’t a cloud in the sky during the entire set, but this season has seen its fair share of strong weather, and Florence + the Machine gave every drop of rain, gust of wind and bolt of lightning a run for its money. The calm before the storm just made the storm that much stronger. - See more at: http://ilistensoyoudonthaveto.com/2015/08/06/florence-the-machine-red-rocks-08-03-15/#sthash.nrdxF7Aq.dpuf

Florence + the Machine are a power force in the UK indie scene who have conquered both sides of the Atlantic since their rise to fame following the release of 'Lungs'. Led by the charismatic and eccentric Florence Welch, the band has a reputation as one of the most exciting and energetic live acts currently working today.

As the thunder begins to roll, the machine appears onstage followed by a majestic looking Florence who confidently takes the helm and launches into the all-consuming 'Only If For A Night'. The haunting 'What The Water Gave Me' follows as Florence lifts her hands to the heavens and the audience cheer below her feet.

Before you have time to react, Florence abandons the facade of a renaissance painting brought to life and has launched herself from the stage to sing and dance 'Rabbit Heart' with the crowd. Her vocals shine through on the soulful 'Leave My Body' as she stands illuminated by a single spotlight and the restraint shown during early single 'Cosmic Love' make for an emotive moment. The finale of 'Spectrum' is a hedonistic piece of dark disco where the crowd surrender themselves to Florence's bizarre world.

Despite only having released their debut in 2009, Florence + the Machine have crafted a live show that is less a gig and more an all-consuming assault on the senses.

Florence Welch has one of the most distinctive voices of this era, and the indie rock band in which she is the lead singer is carried by this timeless vocal performance time and time again.

Opening her concert with ‘You’ve Got the Love’, Florence finds the perfect balance between a classically lyrical performance, and enthusiastic and upbeat. The blend of the band is something that comes across to the audience much more pronounced in a live performance environment. Throughout their transitions between ballads and energetic upbeat songs, they maintained their engagement with the audience, having them hooked for the entire duration. Their stamina is worth noting, as throughout the concert, their performance, both physical and vocal did not dwindle at all. The live performance topped their studio recordings.

Their 2010 nomination for Best New Artist at the Grammys was wholeheartedly deserved. Their dedication to their fans is admirable, and their endeavours to make each concert about every member of the audience is something very refreshing. Florence and the Machine set the bar extremely high for live performances, making no mistakes and topping the quality of their recorded work.

I've waited several years for Florence + The Machine to play an intimate gig near me. Suddenly, on April26th 2018 SONGKICK emailed to say just such a gig was on at Scunthorpe Baths Hall on May6th ! Wow!

Applied online via Baths Hall website, & so pleased tickets limited to 2 per person, we were all in with a chance... Feel so, so lucky to get 2x Standing, the perfect way to see her and the band. My daughter Susie & I went: she couldn't believe our good luck either.

Venue was perfect. I'd researched the playlist from Halifax, May5th, visited the old numbers + checked out the new ones, too, so I felt prepared... but I wasn't: I'd expected the atmosphere to be up close and personal, but it was so much more.

Florence hit the stage & wow! Perfect blend of old/ new, a very balanced set from a hugely professional outfit. Florence was so open & warm giving background to several numbers. She floated, danced, teased and enthralled her adoring audience. We didn't want it to stop: so much pleasure was being shared. Her voice is incredible, it blends with the music so very well. Truly, we are blessed !

An electric show of epic proportions.

While I was expecting to hear more from the upcoming album, I was still delighted to hear all of the classics as well as a few new ones. This was my first time seeing FATM live, and they most certainly didn't disappoint. Florence's vocals were so omnipotent and sharp, and the same if not better than what you hear on the record. Her free as a bird movements and seemingly infinite pool of energy were wondrous to behold. I enjoyed her interaction with the crowd as well, she seemed to bring a life to her audience that I've never seen other live artists do, personally.

The only downsides might have been to do with the venue, which took too long to get everyone seated, also there wasn't much room between people so it was all rather cramped. And the supporting act, which I didn't particularly enjoy nor could I understand very well. But those things have nothing to do with Florence + The Machine personally, so it doesn't reflect on them negatively whatsoever.

Overall, an enjoyable experience that I would repeat in a heartbeat.

I definitely recommend that you go and see Florence and The Machine if they come to your city! They are such an amazing band and they sound as good live as they do on their albums. Florence has so much stamina and tirelessly runs around onstage from side to side, looking into the eyes of as many people as she possibly can. Highlights of her show in Manchester this year were 'Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up)' when she encouraged people to get on their friend's shoulders and she ran offstage and up the steps into the lower tier seating! 'Dog Days Are Over' was a perfect finale that ended with many people leaving the concert with very little clothing on! The stage was minimal but dramatic, with a huge sparkling background, rows of spotlights and a large round moon and sun that came out from behind the background during the middle of the show. Definitely go and see them if you get the chance, you won't regret it! They're worth every penny.

10/10. Her voice sounds the same live as it does recorded. She was a crazy ball of energy dancing and running around every inch of the stage in a flowing dress and long hair. Florence even went into the crowd on several occasions to directly connect with people (much to the dismay of her security). Her commentary between songs majorly enhanced the performance as she is adorably shy and has the most calming ethereal presence- which basically means she is a massive hippie. She encouraged everyone to hold hands and embrace and put our phones away and jump wildly with her. Her band were also excellent and the staging- white sheets, almost like sails, hanging from the ceiling which were raised up and down and had lights shone on them- and the gorgeous glitter confetti which dropped at the end added to the magical experience. Next time I will be waiting for hours before to get to the front row!! Could not recommend more!!

This was the best concert I have ever been to. That is being said after seeing a lot of them. She has so much energy, and conects to the crowd so well.

A lady had jumped on to the stage while Florence was performing 'Rabbit Heart' and the security guard went after her. Florence stopped him politely, then gave the lady a big hug. Music continued on to add to the theme of her kindness. She then went on to run through the crowd, and hug a bunch of people. She ran around, then sang a note so clearly as if she hadn't moved a step. She even asked to have every one stand up and dance which was great, because where I live, people have the tendency to just sit and watch at concerts like that. I had a blast - danced my heart out to every song, and felt as if I was on some sort of high due to the energy that she sent through the crowd. I am going to see her every time she comes to town now. For sure.

What can I say? What a fantastic evening. We got to Ally Pally really early to be one of the first in....we weren't first!. Despite the heavy rain loads of people were in the line before us. The doors opened and we all entered. Luckily, we were able to get into the hall quickly, resulting in us being centre stage, 5 from the front.

We waited and waited, feet getting tired. The support band (Three girls from Watford) came on. They were awesome.

Finally,, the moment arrived, with Flo coming on stage. The concert started with 'What the Water Wants'....it just got better and better. The whole audience were enthralled. The audience sang along to every song. The atmosphere was electric. What a talented lady and group of musicians. I go to loads of gigs and concerts. I was looking forward to seeing FTM the moist and she didn't disappoint.

The concert was awesome.

Florence Welch's presence on stage is unbelievable, her voice is more powerful than in their CDs, and she dances and sings with a lot of passion.

The concert started with "What the water gave me", and it made clear that it was going to be very good. The band has a lot of great songs, and the concert was great from start to end.

One of the best moments was when, while performing "Dog days are over", Florence asked everyone to hug each other, then to take something off and wave it in the air, and to jump as high as we could on a count of three. Everyone was jumping and dancing, and the energy that the crowd, Florence and the song transmitted was huge.

Florence and the Machine´s fans shouldn´t miss the oportunity to go to one of their concerts.

Republic Records’ Monte and Avery Lipman on How Taylor Swift, Post Malone, Prince, Partnerships and Persistence Have Made Them the Top Label of the Past Decade

Variety's Music Moguls of the Year rose to the top through talent, entrepreneurship, a ferocious work ethic and a never-give-up spirit.

Republic Records Monte and Avery Lipman

It seems incredibly corny to say that Republic Records ’ ethos is contained in the label’s first-ever monster hit, Chumbawamba’s 1997 anthem “Tubthumping”: “I get knocked down, I get up again, you’re never gonna keep me down.”  OK, it  is  incredibly corny — but it fits. Republic and its founders, brothers Monte and Avery Lipman , have been the most successful label of the past decade because of their entrepreneurship, ferocious work ethic and the fact that they just don’t give up.

Popular on variety.

That ethos has not only led Republic to lead market share nearly every year for the past decade-plus — it’s been Variety ’s Hitmakers label of the year four out of the last seven years, and appears headed to a fifth — they’ve also attracted an almost impossibly long list of the world’s biggest artists: Taylor Swift , Post Malone , Ariana Grande, Drake, the Weeknd, Lil Wayne, Pearl Jam, Nicki Minaj, John Mellencamp, Florence + the Machine, John Legend and Metro Boomin, along with Prince, Amy Winehouse and even Stevie Wonder. And earlier this year, the Lipmans were elevated by Universal Music Group chairman-CEO Lucian Grainge to head a new division, Republic Corps , which includes the titular label as well as the iconic Def Jam, Island and Mercury labels and the Imperial independent division.

“My very, very first job out of college in 1986, was at Arista Records — I got fired,” says Monte, who started out in radio promotion. “Then I got hired at SBK, which became part of the EMI label group — got fired. Then made my way over to Atlantic — got fired! So that was my track record.”

Avery had better luck — ironically at Arista Records, where he worked as Clive Davis’ assistant. “I just got the job because I could type,” he laughs, “but just being around Clive, you learn so much.” Next, the brothers decided to try their hands at management, until “we realized we were probably the worst managers known to man, and so we realized that we should do a record label,” Avery says.

The label’s first release was a dance single by Lonnie Gordon called “Dirty Love,” and several other singles followed as the brothers gradually transitioned from managing Pennsylvania prank-rock act the Bloodhound Gang to being their label, beginning with the 1996 album “One Fierce Beer Coaster.” That album was picked up by Geffen Records via a savvy young A&R exec named Wendy Goldstein — who is now president of Republic Records — which led to a larger deal with the label and with what is now Universal Music Group. That company ultimately acquired the label in 2000 and appointed the brothers to top executive roles that have gotten bigger and bigger as the years and successes have piled up.

But the first song that truly put the label on the map was the aforementioned “Tubthumping,” an indelibly catchy — and anomalous — track by the British anarcho-pop collective Chumbawamba. The song topped the charts in multiple countries, reached No. 2 in Canada and No. 6 in the U.S., where it was certified triple platinum in 1998 (the last time its status was updated).

“That just took us into overdrive,” Avery says. “It really introduced us to, ‘Oh my God, this is what success feels like.’”

The success continued through the 1990s and into the 21st century with pop and rock hits from 3 Doors Down, Godsmack and, later, Winehouse (via Island Records U.K.). But the key alliance during the label’s first decade was a partnership with Cash Money Records, the powerhouse founded by Ronald “Slim” Williams and Bryan Williams (who goes by “Baby” or “Birdman”) and Universal that drove the careers of Lil Wayne, Juvenile, Hot Boyz and later Drake, Nicki Minaj and Tyga. Although they say every arrangement is different, the partnership that the Lipmans struck with that label set the mold for similar deals over the years, with Lava Records (Lorde, Greta Van Fleet), Big Loud Records (Morgan Wallen), the Korean companies HYBE (Tomorrow X Together) and JYP (Stray Kids, Twice), most recently Jelly Roll and BMG and more — even Swift, who is in many ways her own industry.

Monte is quick to highlight the collaborative nature of those partnerships.

“For example,” he continues, “we’ve been with Cash Money for 30 years, and Slim, in particular, in every single conversation, would say at some point, ‘What do you think?’ He never had the attitude of ‘We’ve got all the answers’ — he’s curious, ‘Is there another way to do this?’ That’s a big part of it for us too, because we learn from our partnerships. We’ve got a strategic alliance with the two biggest companies in South Korea, JYP and HYBE, and they’re doing things that we hadn’t seen before, with their commitment to fans and fan engagement. We’re still students of the game.”

That ethos is being put into practice with the Lipmans’ new roles as heads of Republic Corps (with longtime lieutenant Jim Roppo as president-COO), which includes the Republic label (under Goldstein), Island (whose co-CEOs Imran Majid and Justin Eshak are lighting up the charts with Sabrina Carpenter and Chappell Roan after just three years in the job), Mercury (under Post Malone’s longtime A&R Tyler Arnold and Ben Adelson), Def Jam (under Tunji Balogun) and Imperial (under Astralwerks veteran Glenn Mendlinger). In past interviews, Monte has described the brothers’ role as “coaching the coaches,” and that approach has continued with their broader purview.

“We’re field generals — we’re not [giving orders from] the tent,” he says. “But with that in mind, the idea is to let these people operate, let them make decisions,” he says. “Avery and I are not here to micromanage; we’re here to support and tap the institutional knowledge — ‘We’re a bit older than you, we’ve experienced a little more, so there’s a good chance that whatever issue you’re dealing with at that moment, we’ve seen it.’ But the idea is not to just go in and fix it,” he continues. “It’s ‘I’m not going to make the decision for you, but here are a few things you may want to consider.’”

It doesn’t hurt that several of those executives came up at Republic. “We call it ‘Republic University,’” Monte says, “and I give Avery tremendous credit: Both Imran and Justin came in under Avery; he hired Tyler Arnold out of college; [Mercury general manager] Ben Adelson had one other job before he came to us at an entry-level position as Avery’s assistant. So all four of them aren’t just leaders of these labels, they’re leaders within the industry. I mean, what Island is doing right now with Sabrina and Chappell, and Mercury with Post Malone and Morgan Wallen and the alliance with Big Loud, is just incredible.” He says big plans are in the works at Def Jam and Imperial as well.

The Lipmans’ relentless “never give up” attitude has been a defining factor in Republic’s success, and part of it has an unexpected source: Prince. Republic partnered with the artist on just one album, “3121” in 2007, but it was arguably the best of his later career and also the one that he worked hardest to promote (the “Musicology” tour aside).

“We learned a very, very valuable lesson working with Prince,” Monte says. “After we broke Amy Winehouse in America, he called me unsolicited — I didn’t believe it was him at first, but then I heard the voice and, ‘Oh shit, that’s really Prince,’” he laughs. “He said, ‘I’d like to meet with you, I’ve got a new project, maybe we can work together’ — fantastic! So we talked about his goals and expectations, and they were so [outrageous] that I found myself, in every meeting with Prince, saying, ‘That’s mathematically impossible. You can’t do this. No one’s ever done this.’ And he would get very frustrated and in a very Prince-like would always end the meeting abruptly and walk out, and another week or month would go by and I’d figure, well, that might be the end of that, but then he would come back. This went back and forth, back and forth, for 18 months. And he finally said, ‘Come to L.A., I want to have another discussion,’ and I’m thinking it’s just going to be more of the same: ‘I can’t deliver on this.’

“But then I thought, ‘You know what? I’m not going to argue with him. There’s got to be a way to reach these goals.’ And as I’m flying to Los Angeles, I look out the window over Kansas, and I’m like, ‘There’s got to be 3 million people down there,’ and I thought, there’s more than 350 million people in the United States. What do they all have in common? Mobile phones, which were in the early days of [working with] music.

“So in every conversation, no matter which artist,” he concludes, “that’s the way we enter the meeting: ‘You want to have the biggest record of all time? You want to break the internet? You want top 10 streaming? You’ve got some wood to chop, but let’s figure this out.’ That’s our job.”

They also have no hesitation about following an artist through a major stylistic change — like Post Malone’s shift into country. While many artists have made a similar move and been met with relative indifference from both country audiences and their own fanbases, Post has been warmly embraced by the Nashville community — and scored one of the biggest hits of the year with “I Had Some Help,” his tag-team single with country superstar (and fellow Republic extended-family member) Morgan Wallen.

It’s actually been a long time coming: As part of their interview for winning Variety Hitmakers label of the year in 2019, Monte said: “One brilliant thing about Post is that you couldn’t categorize him in any one genre — his point of entry was hip-hop, but he also does rock, and some day he’s going to come with a country album.”

“I say this all the time: Post Malone is the artist development story of the year,” Avery says now. “He’s a well-established artist, but if you think about his trajectory — he put himself in a new place [with his ‘F-1 Trillion’ country album] and he did it strategically, with features and other things, and he executed it in a way that we haven’t seen in years. It’s a really, really proud moment for us and for him — even industry people says to us, ‘That was really well played.’ Because it’s not easy to do all the things that he did, especially given artists’ normal career cycle. [‘I Had Some Help’] was the biggest streaming country record at that time for a male artist, so he actually broke through the ceiling again. And he’s just a great guy, so endearing, who loves to be creative — that’s why he can work with rappers, rock stars, country singers, Beyonce, Taylor Swift. Everyone loves the guy.”

Speaking of whom, while the Lipmans won’t say much about the details of the company’s relationship with Taylor Swift, Monte has plenty to say about her success.

Of course, the Lipmans have a boss besides their artists: Grainge, who took the helm at Universal Music Group in 2010 and whom they credit with giving them the room to succeed.

“Lucian became our boss in 2010, and since 2012, we have been on a historic run, No. 1 on nearly every platform,” Monte says. “And I give him tremendous credit, because what he tapped into with Avery and myself was our entrepreneurial spirit. He has always empowered us and encouraged us and motivated us to operate without any fear and authorized us to do things that perhaps we never would have done in the past — to overextend ourselves and take risks, and occasionally, when it wasn’t a favorable outcome, it was a learning experience. And he’ll press you — his reference is the stress test, ‘I’m gonna push you hard, and you’d better be able to tell me why this is so important’ — and we do the same now.”

Avery concludes, “It’s easy to run a successful operation when things are going well, but the real test is when it gets rough. How do you help an artist work through a project that maybe didn’t go as well as you’d envisioned? How do you manage that? You stay calm and say, ‘We’re gonna figure this out.’ And I say that as someone who’s filled out Chapter 11 paperwork three times!” he laughs, remembering the company’s early days. “Fortunately, I’ve torn them up. But those lessons stay with you: It’s about being resourceful, solving problems, overcoming adversity and not giving up.”
