Grand Canyon

Vast, magnificent and inarguably beautiful, the Grand Canyon is easily Arizona's most distinguishable landmark — a natural wonder you must see to believe. Stretching 277 miles from end to end, the Grand Canyon's rocky walls descend more than a mile to the canyon’s floor, where the wild Colorado River continues to carve away at the rugged landscape. Everyone should see the Grand Canyon at least once in their lifetime, and area businesses and outfitters make experiencing the canyon accessible to everyone.

From the Rims

If you are short on time or prefer to take in fantastic panoramas from paved viewing points, simply visiting the Grand Canyon creates memories that stick with visitors forever. Grand Canyon National Park’s South Rim is the most popular visitor area, with plenty of places to eat, shop and stay the night in area hotels or campsites. The Grand Canyon Railway offers a fun family alternate for a short visit to the canyon. It operates turn-around trips from Williams to the South Rim year-round, with a three-hour window to see the canyon. Its annual Polar Express excursions are the stuff holiday traditions are made of. While less developed with fewer services and closed during the colder months, the North Rim is open from May to October and offers a unique and uncrowded way to explore the Grand Canyon. Grand Canyon West is also a favorite for short visits. Its Skywalk takes Grand Canyon visitors out over the rim on a glass bridge that hovers 4,000 feet above the canyon floor. Choose your vantage point and get ready to take pictures you will never delete.

From the Canyon Floor

If your group leans more toward the adventurous side, find many ways to fully immerse yourself in this natural wonder of the world. Trailheads at any of the entry points lead to steep switchbacks that take visitors into the canyon. Commit to a few hours to hike to plateaus fully encircled by the canyon walls. To hike to the Colorado River on the canyon floor, plan to camp overnight before hiking back up from the river to the rim. Many experienced hikers join seasoned outfitters on grueling rim-to-rim hikes or multi-day backpacking adventures to fully immerse themselves in the splendor of the canyon. Outfitters also offer Grand Canyon white-water river rafting adventures on the Colorado River, which can last from half a day to two weeks. Helicopter tours, mule rides and mountain bike rim trails offer other memorable ways to see the canyon in person. Walk to the South Rim From Yavapai Lodge

You can walk up the Greenway Trail directly from Yavapai Lodge to the Visitor Center, then pick up the Rim Trail. Another way to get to the Rim Trail is to use the trail that begins behind park headquarters. It brings you to a point on the rim that’s roughly halfway between Yavapai Point and Verkamp’s Visitor Center.

SELF-GUIDED DESERT VIEW ACTIVITIES

Explore Desert View Watchtower

Designed by architect Mary Colter as an homage to the watchtowers built by the region’s ancestral Puebloan people, the Desert View Watchtower offers a commanding view of the Canyon. It also features murals painted by Hopi artist Fred Kabotie.

Tour Tusayan Museum and Ruins

Three miles west of Desert View, the Tusayan Museum provides a rare window into the lives and culture of the Pueblo Indians, who lived in the area more than 800 years ago. Browse exhibits that feature pottery, arrowheads and household items. Take a walk amid the juniper and pines through the Tusayan Ruins, to get a true sense of perspective on how the ancient Puebloans lived in harmony with nature.

Frequently Asked Questions

This is the southern edge of the Grand Canyon, open year round as opposed to the seasonal North Rim, with the most iconic views including the historic Grand Canyon Village.

The west rim is home to the Skywalk and the Hualapai Tribe. This area is not the Grand Canyon National Park. It offers amazing day tours convenient from Las Vegas.

Tusayan is a small town located at the South Rim entrance to the national park…home to the Squire Resort at The Grand Canyon, BW Signature Collection

Typically we are part of a larger southwestern itinerary. Phoenix and Las Vegas are the major airports leading to the canyon. The drive from either location is incredibly scenic …with Sedona and Oak Creek Canyon leading up from Phoenix and the Hoover Dam and Route 66 along the way from Vegas.

Driving distances are great in the Southwest. While the next closest cities to the canyon, Williams and Flagstaff, are only some 70 miles away, it can often take an additional hour or more to get through the park entrance. You’ll want to make the most of both sunrise and sunset by staying close.

At 7000 ft (2100 m) we do get winter. Additionally, the high desert always has at least a 30F degree (15C) difference between night and day. Always pack layers, especially a windbreaker. Sunset is amazing and with sunny days come starry nights! Be prepared!

The canyon is entirely within Arizona. However, Arizona does not practice Daylight Saving…so although we are listed as MST during the summer months we are at PST. All tribal nations within the state do practice Daylight Saving…so be sure to check the time when traveling throughout the region in the summer months.

During a private guided tour, a Field Institute instructor will weave the canyon’s story during a 3-hour walk in Grand Canyon's historic Village. The historic rim trail has a great deal to offer the inquisitive mind. Ancient rocks and fossils, historic Native American pictographs, amazing plants and animals, and some of the most breathtaking views in North America will be yours to enjoy.

From there, we will either walk towards Bright Angel Trail for your hike down to Second Tunnel or walk through the historic area of Grand Canyon Village on your way to the Train Depot, El Tovar, Hopi House, and Verkamp's Visitor Center. 

Once we are near Verkamps Visitor Center, we will head west towards Bright Angel Lodge and learn about historic CCC structures, Kolb Studio, historic Native American pictographs which are 100 yards down Bright Angel Trail and 200-million-year-old marine fossil beds. This activity is family-friendly!

Day 1 - Let's Get Going

At 9 am you depart from the tour office in Flagstaff and make your way to the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park. Once at Grand Canyon, we will have the entire day to explore the Canyon on the Rim, or join our hiking guide for a short hike down the historic Bright Angel Trail. After lunch, we make our way east, stopping at some of the most magnificent sights on the South Rim. We’ll eventually make our way to the Cameron Trading Post for a traditional Southwest-Navajo inspired meal, and rest for the night in the historic Lodge.

Day 2 - Get Ready for a Monumental Day

After breakfast, depart Historic Cameron Lodge and make our way through the painted desert to Monument Valley.

At 1pm, we depart for a 3 hours open air, Navajo tour of Monument Valley.

Departing Monument Valley, we make our way to Page, Arizona where we will stay for the remaining 2 nights.

Includes: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Activities, Hotel

Day 3 - Rise and Shine! We Have a Day Packed with Adventure.

After breakfast at your hotel, we will make our way to Colorado River Discovery for a 1/2 Day guided raft trip through beautiful Glen Canyon. This trip includes rafting through Horseshoe Bend!

After your rafting tour, we will have a picnic lunch at Glen Canyon Dam, followed by a short trip to Antelope Canyon for a 90 minute guided tour.

Finally, we will make our way to Horseshoe Bend, where you will see one of the most magnificent views in the country.

Day 4 - Red Rock Country, Here We Come.

After breakfast, we will depart from Page, Arizona and make our way to the beautiful town of Sedona, AZ.

Experience the red rocks like no one else on a scenic helicopter tour and explore the rest of the city.

Now, all good things must come to an end. After your exciting last day, you will be taken back to Flagstaff.

What is the Grand Canyon?

The Grand Canyon is one of the seven wonders of the world. It’s an 18-mile wide, 0.9 miles deep, and 277 miles long gorge carved by the Colorado River over 5-6 million years. Scientists estimate that humans have lived there since the last Ice Age.

How do I get to the Grand Canyon?

The closest airports to the Grand Canyon are Las Vegas and Phoenix, but you can also fly into Flagstaff (a one-hour drive from the South Rim) or Salt Lake City (about seven hours away by car). Public transport is limited, so the best option is to drive or join us on a tour.

Getting around the Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon has a free shuttle bus around the South Rim. The shuttles take you to the best viewpoints which are inaccessible to private vehicles.

There is also a Trans-Canyon-Shuttle service between the North and South Rims between May and October.

Guided bus tours also operate in the park, as well as taxi services between the South Kaibab Trailhead, Grand Canyon Village and Tusayan/Airport.

When is the best time to visit the Grand Canyon?

The best time to visit the Grand Canyon in terms of weather and avoiding huge crowds is between March and May, and September through November.

No matter what season you visit the Grand Canyon, bring a sturdy pair of hiking boots or trainers with good grip, light and comfortable layers, a waterproof jacket, warm layers, a fleece, a sun hat, sunglasses and sunscreen.

Also, make sure you bring a reusable water bottle and plenty of snacks to refuel throughout the day.

What animals live in the Grand Canyon National Park?

Some animals you might encounter include desert bighorn sheep, deer, coyotes, mountain lions, mules, gray foxes and bears. There is also a diverse range of reptiles, amphibians and birds.

Can I use my mobile/cell phone in the Grand Canyon?

Your cell phone will probably have coverage near the park’s main tourist hubs, but there will be little or no coverage once you start hiking past the canyon rim.

Agree that clearly the bits that make it online are the crashes, though I've also come across that clip where a horse jumps a fence and joins a bike race a million times, so I'm kind of surprised a random horse didn't make it in.
