Tom Kim tops a stacked leaderboard as TPC River Highlands yields more low scores at 2024 Travelers Championship

C ROMWELL, Conn. -- On a day that felt like two thanks to a three-hour and 10-minute rain delay, the Travelers Championship provided golf lovers with exactly what they have come to expect from the only PGA Tour event held in the Northeast: low scores.

In the third round of last week's U.S. Open, the 74 players who made the cut carded 167 birdies, but this Saturday, the 70 players in the field here made 347 birdies.

Before the storms arrived, Cameron Young provided plenty of electricity by becoming the 12th man to shoot a 59 in a PGA Tour event . Playing in nearly windless conditions on a course softened by rain that fell Friday evening, he started by going 5 under through his first four holes en route to a front-nine 28, then birdied 13, eagled the par-4 15th and stuffed a 9-iron to five feet to set up a final birdie on the 17th hole.

Coming off a 66 in the second round, you might think that Young would be in the lead, but this is the Travelers Championship, where Keegan Bradley won last year at 23 under. Young's 13 under total was dusted by major winners and several young stars who are eyeing the $3.6 million prize for winning this signature event.

After making his first bogey of the week on the fourth hole Saturday, Tom Kim, who had the lead after both the first and second rounds, made birdies on the fifth, sixth, eighth and 11th holes to reach 16 under. Kim made two more birdies on the back nine as darkness descended on the course to shoot 65 and take a one-shot lead into Sunday.

"The wind kind of died down after the delay, so the greens were really soft and fairways were soft and there's no wind, so obviously there were a lot of birdies out there," Kim said. "I didn't really look at leaderboards, but when you get soft conditions out there like that, it's definitely gettable and I feel like I executed well enough to have a good round today."

Kim is trying to be the 12th wire-to-wire winner at the Travelers Championship and the first since Jordan Spieth won in 2017.

With more storms in the forecast to be around TPC River Highlands on Sunday afternoon, the PGA Tour decided on Saturday to group players in three instead of twos and have the first group start at 6:50 a.m. ET. The hope is to conclude play at the Travelers Championship by 4 p.m. ET.

Kim, at 18 under, will be in the final group on Sunday, paired with Akshay Bhatia, who shot 64 on Saturday, while paired with Masters champion and world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, who also shot 64. Bhatia and Scheffler will each start Sunday one shot behind Kim at 17 under.

"I was pretty nervous stepping on that first tee today playing with him, and I think it's kind of my first time playing in that many, in front of that many people," Bhatia admitted Saturday evening. "It was really cool. (The fans were) 90 percent Scottie, 10 percent me, which is all right, but it was awesome."

It sounds like Scheffler had fun too.

"Sometimes, when you're in pairs, you can feed off each other the wrong or the right way. Today, especially at the end, we were feeding off each other what I would say in the right way," Scheffler said. "It's always a good thing."

Asked if he anticipated that it would be hard to separate from the crowded leaderboard on Sunday, given the soft conditions and low scores, Scheffler said, "It really depends on the weather. I think I saw that the winds were going to be up a little bit, and it depends if we get more rain overnight. So there will be a few different factors going into it, but I'll wake up tomorrow, see how the course is playing and go from there."

Xander Schauffele, who won the Travelers Championship two years ago and quietly shot a pair of 65s to start this year's event, made birdies at two, three, six and the ninth hole, and then three more on the back-nine before a bogey on 18 left him with a 64. He is at 16 under.

The golf medal winner from the Tokyo Olympics knows that on Sunday, he'll need to circle a lot of his scores if he wants to contend.

"It feels like, more than ever, you're going to have to keep your head down," he said. "It's kind of been my motto, to stay in my lane, for quite some time and I think tomorrow it's going to hold pretty true. You might par the first two or three holes and feel like you're miles behind, but you can get on a run at any point on this golf course."

Collin Morikawa will start Sunday at 16, tied with Sungjae Im, while Tony Finau, Justin Thomas and Shane Lowry will begin the final round at 14 under.

Canada's Weir finishes 2nd to Harrington at PGA Champions event

Protestors disrupt scheffler's 6th win of pga season.

Padraig Harrington won the Dick's Sporting Goods Open for the third consecutive year on Sunday, making a key par save on the par-3 17th to hold on for a 4-under 68 and a one-shot victory over Canadian Mike Weir.

Harrington captured his eighth PGA Tour Champions title and his second of the year.

Weir was playing two groups ahead of Harrington and closed to within one shot by making birdie on the 17th hole. Harrington missed the green to the right and faced a difficult lie, with the ball sitting down on a slight slope.

He chipped it about eight feet past the hole and made the par putt, and then closed out with a par on the 18th at En-Joie Golf Club to finish at 15-under 201.

"I suppose I'm good value for money," Harrington said. "When I was coming down that stretch, you're not really sure what you're going to get. I'm either going to hit it stone dead or I'm going to have to get it up and down out of some weird place. It's entertaining. I wish it wasn't as entertaining."

Weir comes up just short of a win at PGA Tour Champions event

The victory comes one week after Harrington was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame during the U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2.

Weir closed with a 67.

Ken Duke (68), Mark Hensby (66) and Ken Tanigawa (70) tied for third, two shots behind. Tanigawa was part of a three-way tie for the 36-hole lead with Harrington and Stephen Ames.

Calgary's Stephen Ames was tied for the lead after 36 holes and was still in the mix until making bogey on the 13th and 14th holes to fall too far behind to make a run. He held onto his points lead in the Charles Schwab Cup.

Protestors disrupt Scheffler's 6th win of season

Six people protesting climate change came out of the crowd and stormed the 18th green while the leaders were lining up their putts on the final hole of regulation at the Travelers Championship on Sunday, delaying the finish for about five minutes.

The protesters sprayed white and red powder, leaving stains on the grass before Scottie Scheffler, Tom Kim and Akshay Bhatia finished their rounds. At least one of the group was wearing a white T-shirt that said, "NO GOLF ON A DEAD PLANET."

After the protesters were tackled by police and taken off, Scheffler left a potential 26-foot clincher from the fringe on the right edge of the cup, then tapped in for par.

Kim, who trailed by one stroke heading into the final hole, sank a 10-foot birdie putt to tie Scheffler and send the tournament to a sudden-death playoff.

Scheffler won with a par on the first playoff hole, the 18th. After the players finished in regulation, workers with leaf blowers came out to clean off the remaining powder, and the hole location was moved before the playoff.

The crowd surrounding the 18th green heckled the protesters by yelling profanities and cheered the police who intervened.

Korean Amy Yang claims her 1st career LPGA major tournament victory

Amy yang captures 1st major with win at women's pga.

Amy Yang built a huge lead and survived a couple of late mistakes to win her long-awaited first major title on Sunday, a three-shot victory in the KMPG Women's PGA Championship.

Yang closed with an even-par 72 at Sahalee to finish at 7-under 281. She was nearly flawless for the first 15 holes and reached 10 under for the tournament for a seven-shot lead before running into a little bit of trouble. But none of her pursuers was able to mount a significant charge.

Brooke Henderson of Smiths Falls, Ont., finished tied for 22nd at 3 over.

Hatton wins LIV Nashville event

Tyrrell Hatton won the inaugural LIV Golf Nashville event Sunday, easily holding off Jon Rahm and two-time U.S. Open champ Bryson DeChambeau for the Englishman's first victory since January 2021 at Abu Dhabi.

Hatton took a three-stroke lead into the round, and shot a 6-under 65 to polish off a six-stroke win at The Grove. Hatton had eight birdies and two bogeys to finish at 19-under 194 trying to avoid looking at a leaderboard until the 17th green.

CROMWELL, Conn. — Scottie Scheffler won the Travelers Championship in a playoff on Sunday, waiting out  a disruption by climate protesters  on the 18th green and Tom Kim’s tying birdie on the last hole of regulation for his sixth victory of the year.

That’s the most wins in one PGA Tour season since Tiger Woods had six in 2009.

And Scheffler, the world’s top-ranked player, still has two months to go.

It was Scheffler’s fourth victory of the year in the tour’s $20 million, limited-field signature events, earning him a payday of $3.6 million. He also won the Masters and The Players Championship.

After a five-minute delay when six people stormed the 18th green and sprayed it with red and white powder, Scheffler left a 26-foot putt from the fringe on the edge of the cup and tapped in for par. That gave him a 5-under 65 and a four-day total of 22-under 258 at TPC River Highlands.

Kim then made a 10-foot birdie putt for a 66 to match Scheffler.

The hole location on the 18th was moved for the playoff to avoid the parts of the green affected by the protesters, at least one of whom was wearing a white T-shirt with the words “NO GOLF ON A DEAD PLANET” in black lettering.

Scheffler hit his approach in the playoff to 11 feet while Kim found a plugged lie in a greenside bunker. Kim’s blast from the fried-egg lie ran 36 feet past the hole, leaving Scheffler with an easy two-putt par for the victory.

Coming off a tie for 41st in the U.S. Open – by far his worst finish of the year -- Scheffler trailed Kim by three strokes after the first round, by two after the second round and by one heading to the tee on Sunday.

Scheffler took a one-stroke lead over Kim with three straight birdies on Nos. 13-15 — he had putts for eagle on two of them. While TCU product Tom Hoge signed for a 62 to finish at 20 under, and Sungjae Im joined him there, Scheffler and Kim matched pars over the next two holes to set up the surprising finish.

Scheffler and Kim share a June 21 birthday — Scheffler is six years older — and they celebrated with New Haven pizza before the tournament about 30 miles north. The birthday buddies and Dallas-area residents played together in the final group on Sunday, chatting and joking together.

But only one of them could hold the trophy at the end.

And just like it’s been so often of late, it was Scheffler.

American Lexi Thompson leads Women's PGA Championship by a shot in her final year on tour

Sport American Lexi Thompson leads Women's PGA Championship by a shot in her final year on tour

A golfer looks over her shoulder and raises a hand to the crowd after holing a putt at a major tournament.

Retiring star Lexi Thompson and world number one Nelly Korda are the players to catch on a star-studded first-round leaderboard at the Women's PGA Championship in Washington.

In-form world number five and 2019 PGA champion Hannah Green is the best-placed Australian, three shots off the pace in pursuit of a second major championship after opening with a 1-under-par 71.

But Thompson, seemingly with the weight of the world off her shoulders after her recent announcement she was stepping away from the game at season's end, and Korda — ominously — look the players to beat.

Joint runner-up in a play-off at last week's LPGA Meijer Classic, Thompson continued her surprising resurgence with a 4-under 68 to claim the outright first-round lead at Sahalee Country Club.

The 29-year-old could see the inevitable question coming after collecting six birdies and briefly hitting 5-under before settling for a one-shot buffer over Korda and Thailand's Patty Tavatanakit.

Would a major title change her plans about retiring from playing full-time on the LPGA Tour?

"I'm just taking it one day at a time. I made my announcement. I'm very content with it," Thompson said after starting with three straight birdies and adding three more on the ninth, 12th and 14th holes.

"Golf is a crazy game, so I'm not going to look too far ahead."

The 2014 Chevron Championship winner claimed the most recent of her 11 LPGA Tour titles in June 2019, while Thursday's 68 was Thompson's lowest round in a major since a 67 at the 2022 Women's PGA at Congressional.

"My approach shots felt great," Thompson said. "They felt really good last week, so just trying to simplify things and get in a rhythm with my swing."

Korda shot 69 in the morning, and Tavatanakit matched it in the afternoon with a bogey-free round.

After missing the cut at her past two events, including the US Open, Korda birdied her final hole to show the form that led the American to a record-tying five straight victories earlier in the year.

She started on the back nine and made four birdies in her first five holes.

A double bogey on the par-4 fourth dropped her back to two under.

"If you try and be aggressive when you've hit it off line, it just bites you in the butt," Korda said.

"Overall I think I played pretty well. I took my chances where I could and I played safe the majority of the round."

Eleven players, including major winners Allisen Corpuz and Frenchwoman Celine Boutier, share fourth at 2-under, with Green in equal 15th spot with defending champion Ruoning Yin of China.

Like Korda, Green started on the back nine and birdied her first two holes to set the early pace.

Three mid-round bogeys seemed to stall her momentum before she picked up a third birdie on her last hole of the round, the par-3 ninth after a lovely tee shot.

Grace Kim, who also featured in last week's play-off loss to world number two Lilia Vu, is the next-best Australian at 1-over.

Minjee Lee, Steph Kyriacou and Gabriela Ruffels all opened with 2-over 74s.

Sarah Kemp and Robyn Choi each shot 75, while Hira Naveed needs a miracle to make the cut after starting with a 10-over 82.

John Pak earns first Korn Ferry Tour title at Compliance Solutions Championship

Change Text Size

John Pak’s path hasn’t been linear, but that’s OK. He’s better for it.

Pak earned his first Korn Ferry Tour title Sunday at the Compliance Solutions Championship, carding 23-under 265 at Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club for a three-stroke victory over hard-charging Jackson Suber.

Pak, 25, built a seven-stroke lead through 54 holes in Oklahoma, and he cruised home with a final-round, 2-under 70. Suber pulled within two strokes after a final-round 63, playing from nine pairings ahead, but Pak drained a pivotal 9-foot par at the tricky par-4 16th to keep his closest pursuer at arm’s length. Pak made a 7-foot birdie at the par-5 17th to push the margin to three strokes, and a comfortable two-putt par at the short par-4 18th allowed him to fully embrace the winning moment.

The top 30 on the season-long standings, finalized after the Korn Ferry Tour Championship presented by United Leasing & Finance in October, will earn 2025 PGA TOUR membership. Pak is now positioned to earn his first TOUR card at season’s end, a testament to his resilience when things got tough.

In 2021, Pak finished atop the inaugural PGA TOUR University Ranking to earn automatic Korn Ferry Tour membership. Rather than competing on the Korn Ferry Tour that summer to pursue a TOUR card, though, he competed in six TOUR events on sponsor exemptions; the goal was earning enough non-member FedExCup points to secure a card. The plan didn’t pan out, as he missed five cuts and finished 39th at the Barracuda Championship. Pak played a full Korn Ferry Tour slate in 2022 but notched just one top-25 showing, losing status at No. 145 on the Points List.

“I've definitely doubted myself when I first turned pro and I really struggled,” Pak said. “A year-and-a-half ago, I had no status anywhere, but I have a lot of people that love me and support me, and I couldn't do it without them.”

Pak had envisioned being a PGA TOUR member by 2023, but rather he was competing on PGA TOUR Canada, two rungs below the game’s highest level. It meant reshaping his definition of success and returning to the game’s inherent grind. He did just that, winning the Elk Ridge Saskatchewan Open presented by Brandt and finishing No. 8 on the season-long Fortinet Cup standings. That meant a direct ticket to Final Stage of PGA TOUR Q-School presented by Korn Ferry, where despite a tie for 113th he was assured some Korn Ferry Tour status for 2024. It meant low-level conditional status, though, with a direct mandate for the season: take advantage of opportunities when they come. Pak followed the blueprint at the Club Car Championship at The Landings Golf & Athletic Club, where he Monday qualified, made the cut and fired a final-round 63 to finish tied for third.

It's hard to say one round can change someone’s life, but the final round in Savannah might hold that meaning for Pak. Not only did it infuse confidence, but it bolstered his position in subsequent reshuffles of conditional members – meaning he’d have a full slate of Korn Ferry Tour starts to test his game, compete and chase his first PGA TOUR card.

One such start: the Compliance Solutions Championship, where Pak rode a blend of talent and confidence to a signature moment, one that he’ll remember for years to come.

“I started working with a sport psychologist (Gio Valiante) about three months ago and he's really helped me kind of redefine my whole psychological point of view on the game of golf and it's helped a lot,” Pak said Sunday afternoon. “I think back then when I first started, it was really tough for me because I had some high expectations. I kind of put too much pressure on myself and I didn't have the success I wanted.

“It was really tough, but I've really kind of flipped the switch there and … the results are showing now, and I think he's helped quite a bit.”

The results prove it.
