Learn more about Hong Kong

Culture and customs.

Hong Kong is a semi-autonomous territory of China. While it might seem like its own country – having its own passport, money, legal system and culture – technically, it’s still part of China. Most Hong Kongers, however, see themselves as separate and are quick to point out the differences. Locals speak Cantonese (rather than Mandarin) and write traditional Chinese characters (rather than simplified).

It’s important to remember that Hong Kong only became a ‘Special Administrative Region’ of China in 1997. For the preceding 150 years it was a British colony, and though it was part of China before the British came, Hong Kong was greatly influenced by foreign traders as well as the Chinese mainland.

The result of this is a culture that integrates traditional Chinese beliefs with more modern Western values. The majority of Hong Kongers practice traditional Chinese religions – Taoist, Confucian or Buddhist doctrines – but these often take a backseat to Western liberalism and a fierce belief in freedom of speech and democracy. The recent protests aimed at what’s seen as an overly intrusive Chinese government are a testament to the desire of Hong Kong’s population to retain their unique blended culture.

Given Hong Kong is one of the world’s largest and most successful financial hubs, there is an element of ‘work hard, play hard’ that pervades everyday life. This isn’t just relegated to the large expat community either, with Hong Kongers placing education, work ethic and wealth accumulation high up on their priority list.

Hong Kong is one of the wealthiest cities in the world and this is built off the back of a laissez-faire economy promoted by the British and the lack of an interventionist government. Life here is fast-paced and cosmopolitan – the population can be quite materialistic and prone to displays of wealth.

A rare example of a culture blending East and West, the Hong Kongers are equal parts aspirational and traditional. They’re saving money and saving face and here’s hoping their unique culture will continue.

History and government

Early history.

Hong Kong has been inhabited for many thousands of years and was incorporated into the Chinese empire under the Qin Dynasty in the early in the late 3rd century BC. The islands were populated by small fishing villages that grew as more Chinese ventured south from the mainland. In the 16th century the Portuguese established colonial rule of nearby Macau, and the foreign presence greatly influenced the development of Hong Kong.

Colonial rule

Hong Kong as we know it began its journey in 1842 after the British won the First Opium War. China unsuccessfully attempted to stop British drug traffickers from smuggling opium into the country and they were forced to cede Hong Kong Island to the British under the Treaty of Nanjing. Once the island had been ceded, it was much easier for the British to access China but still they wanted more. The Second Opium War kicked off in 1856 and in 1860, when the war ended, China was forced to give the British the Kowloon Peninsula. Almost 40 years later the British leased further territory from China, known as the New Territories, which set the modern dividing line. A 99-year lease was agreed upon with the return date set for 1997.

Aside from a brief period of Japanese occupation during WWII, Hong Kong remained under British control. While China took up communism in 1949, Hong Kong continued as a capitalist society and experienced a huge economic boom. In the back of everyone’s mind, however, was the looming deadline for Hong Kong’s New Territories to be returned to China.

Return to China

Leaders from Britain and China met multiple times in the years preceding the handover to discuss whether all of Hong Kong or just the leased areas would be returned. It became increasingly obvious that the New Territories, which included the airport, could not be separated from the rest of Hong Kong and in 1984 the Sino-British Joint Declaration was signed. This agreement handed over all lands to China but gave Hong Kong some degree of autonomy for a period of 50 years through what’s known as the ‘one country, two systems’ policy. Hong Kong became a Special Administrative Region of China with its own legal system and its capitalist economy and individual democratic rights were protected until 2047.

Modern Hong Kong

Hong Kong is still a global financial center and shows no signs of slowing down. That said, the city has been plagued by protests in response to what many are calling excessive interference by the Chinese government. In 2014, for example, elections were held but all candidates had to be vetted and approved by Beijing. The locals are concerned that moves like this are eroding their freedom, which will in turn affect their economy and lifestyle. It’s impossible to say what will happen in Hong Kong after – and in the lead up to – 2047, but it seems that the Hong Kongers are intent on keeping their society and economy as independent as possible.

Eating and drinking

Hong Kong’s history as an international port and British colony has shaped its cuisine, which deliciously blurs the lines between Chinese, Western and other international influences. Its geographic proximity to southern China means Cantonese traditions form the backbone of Hong Kong’s cuisine and specialties like dim sum can be found everywhere from hole-in-the-wall street vendors to 5-star hotels. Hong Kong has become a foodie destination for both its perfectly executed traditional dishes and the new spin Chefs are putting on them. Fun fact: the spicier the dish, the less fresh it probably is. Cantonese chefs prefer to keep the natural flavors of the ingredients, so they’ll usually use small amounts of spice. These are some you need to try:

  • Dim sum This quintessential Hong Kong dish can be found in abundance throughout the city. Translating as ‘touch the heart’, dim sum are bite-sized dishes accompanied by tea in a dining experience known as ‘yum cha’ (literally ‘drink tea’) and are rarely more expensive than USD 1–3 per dish. The most famous dim sum restaurant is probably Tim Ho Wan, which was awarded a Michelin star in 2010 and named the world’s ‘cheapest Michelin-starred restaurant’, or Luk Yu Tea House, which dates back to 1933.
  • Char siu The Cantonese don’t mess around when it comes to pork. This dish is traditionally cooked by skewering strips of marinated, boneless pork and placing them over a fire or in an oven, then served with noodles, rice or inside a bun.
  • Seafood Given Hong Kong’s location, it comes as no surprise that seafood is a massive part of the local restaurant scene. Shellfish and fresh fish are served up in a variety of ways from fish balls to seafood soup and lobster and crab.
  • Congee This rice porridge has been eaten around the world for over a thousand years. The Cantonese version will often use fish or pork stock as a base for this silky-smooth comfort food.

 Plant-based options

Hong Kong may be known for its traditional meat-based dishes but a food-mad city like this has plenty of options for vegetarians and vegans too. In fact, Hong Kong is probably the best place in all of China for varied vegetarian food and it’s not just a case of ordering a dish without the meat. From vegetarian dumplings to noodles and a range of European-influenced dishes, you’ll have no issue finding a veggie feast while in town.

Of course, this is all a lot easier when you’re traveling with a local, someone who knows the language and the culture and can help you tell your sorrel from your schi (they’re both soups FYI). If you travel with Intrepid, you’ll have a local leader who can help you decipher menus and recommend good plant-based choices.

Geography and environment

Located on the south-eastern coast of China, Hong Kong is made up of three main territories: Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories. With an extremely high population density, Hong Kong as a whole is notorious for lacking residential space and this comes down to the difficult terrain. The region has undergone a series of land reclamation projects to increase usable land area, with the international airport being built by leveling two islands and reclaiming some 6 square miles (10 square kilometers) of seabed.

Hong Kong Island

This was the first piece of land occupied by the British Empire and sits on the southern shore of Victoria Harbour. The central area is the economic and historical center of Hong Kong. It’s packed with skyscrapers and shopping malls, while other parts of the island offer hilly terrain and good hiking opportunities.

Kowloon sits directly opposite Hong Kong Island on the north shore of Victoria Harbour. It’s the southern part of Hong Kong’s mainland territory and was taken by the British in 1860. It has developed into a thriving shopping and entertainment district and is surrounded by the New Territories.

The New Territories

The New Territories refer to the land leased by the British from China in 1898. It includes all the area between Kowloon and the border with mainland China, as well as more than 200 outlying islands, most notably Lantau and Lamma islands. Lantau is home to the airport as well as sights like Disneyland and the Big Buddha, while Lamma is popular for hiking trails and beaches. A lot of the New Territory’s land is quite mountainous, with Hong Kong’s highest point – Tai Mo Shan – located in the range just north of Kowloon. The eastern region is sparsely populated, with many hiking trails winding through the lush, tropical greenery.

Hong Kong has a subtropical climate and is generally pretty hot and humid.

Spring sees average temperatures in the low 20s°C (high 60s°F) that steadily increase into the summer. June, July and August are the wettest months with heavy rain from the south-southwest monsoon. Temperatures average around 28°C (82°F) and humidity is quite high. Fall sees a fall in humidity, less rainfall and average temperatures of 20–28°C (68–82°F). Winter is even drier and can actually get quite cool, especially in the evenings. Temperatures tend to top out around 20°C (68°F) and can drop down to 10°C (50°F).

Hong Kong is a world-famous shopping destination with a glut of luxury stores, unique antiques and a mind-boggling range of other offerings.

Temple Street Night Market

While the city has more than its fair share of chaotic markets, the Temple Street Night Market is it's most famous. Located in the heart of Kowloon, this market is open seven nights a week and can provide you with everything from electronics, clothes and antiques to noodles and seafood soup.

Mongkok Ladies’ Market

Mongkok is one of the most densely populated places on the planet. This market got its name from the amount of women’s clothing and accessories on sale but there’s plenty more up for grabs on this one-kilometer strip. Weave your way through the crowd and see if you can be the first to grab a bargain – even if you don’t it’s a memorable experience.

Hong Kong’s Central district has just about all the shopping options you’ll ever need. Wyndham and Hollywood roads have a bunch of art galleries and some of Asia’s best antique shops, while the Landmark shopping mall is home to your top-end brands like Louis Vuitton.

Causeway Bay

Causeway Bay is touted as one of Hong Kong’s best shopping districts and is home to the Times Square shopping mall. It’s known as a city without night as the closing times are the latest in the city and there’s plenty of street food to keep the most rabid shopper fueled up.

Festivals and events

Chinese New Year

The most important event on the Chinese calendar comes with many traditions and customs. The city shuts down – but not before being decorated in red, the color of good fortune – while people visit family, exchange iconic Lai See gifts (red envelopes stuffed with cash) and drop into their local temple for prayer. It can be difficult to travel during this period, so your best bet is to stay put and take in the dragon dances, parade of carnival floats and the immense fireworks display that takes place over Victoria Harbour.

Hong Kong Arts Festival

Founded in 1973, the Hong Kong Arts Festival takes place over February and March each year and promotes leading local and international artists in all genres of the performing arts. Past performers include the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Paris Opera Ballet, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Philip Glass, the China National Peking Opera Company and the Bolshoi Theatre. With cultural events spread over the festival period there are a bunch of fantastic opportunities to see some of the best artists from both China and the rest of the world.

Mid-Autumn Festival

This harvest festival is celebrated in different ways in various southeast Asian countries, but in Hong Kong festivities are all about illuminated lanterns and dragon dances. For three days each September, colorful lantern exhibits, performances, palm readings and games fill neighborhoods as people gorge on mooncakes. Head to Tai Hang for a festival highlight – where hundreds of performers use incense sticks and firecrackers to make an incredible ‘fire dragon’ dance.

Dragon Boat Festival

People flock to waterways across China every year to watch three days of frantic competition. The party is just as important as the race in Hong Kong with concerts, food trucks, beer tents, games and more popping up around Victoria Harbour. The festivities begin on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month each year.

Public holidays that may impact travel include:

Buddha’s Birthday

Hong Kong Special Admins. Region Establishment Day

National Day of the People’s Republic of China

Chung Yeung Festival

Please note dates of Hong Kong's public holidays may vary.

These are the periods most likely to feature pleasant temperatures and a relatively small amount of rain compared to the rest of the year, while the October/November period also tends to see more sunshine.

Is it safe to travel to Hong Kong?

Hong Kong has traditionally been a very safe place to visit. That said, there have been ongoing protests directed at the Chinese government that can take place with very little warning. While these generally don’t present a direct threat to tourists, it’s possible you may get caught up if you don’t take precautions. Always monitor the local news for word of any possible protests.

Do I need a visa to travel to Hong Kong?

Travelers from the US, Europe, Australia, Canada and New Zealand do not require a visa for stays of up to 90 days. If you hold a UK passport, you may stay for 180 days without a visa.

Visas are the responsibility of the individual traveler. Entry requirements can change at any time, so it's important that you check for the latest information. Please visit the relevant consular website of the country or countries you’re visiting for detailed and up-to-date visa information specific to your country of origin. Check the Essential Trip Information section of your tour itinerary for more information.

Is tipping customary in Hong Kong?

Tipping isn’t a huge part of Hong Kong’s culture and most restaurants will add a 10–15 per cent service charge to your bill. That said, hotel staff, like luggage porters, will often expect a small tip for their service.

What is the internet access like in Hong Kong?

Free wi-fi is widely available across Hong Kong. You should be able to find hotspots at most major tourist attractions, libraries, major stations and shopping malls. Many hotels, bar and cafes will also offer complimentary wi-fi.

Can I use my mobile/cell phone while in Hong Kong?

Mobile/cell phone coverage is exceptional across Hong Kong. Phones can be used pretty much everywhere and there are a number of tourist SIM cards available for purchase once you arrive. If you’d prefer to use your global roaming, be sure to activate it before departing and always check costs with your provider.

Can I drink the water in Hong Kong?

Tap water is considered safe to drink in Hong Kong unless marked otherwise. For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water. Fill a reusable water bottle or canteen with filtered water instead.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Hong Kong?

Major credit cards are accepted by large hotels, stores and restaurants, but may not be accepted by smaller vendors and market stalls. Be sure to carry a small amount of some cash in case your card is not an option.

What is ATM access like in Hong Kong?

ATMs are easy to find in Hong Kong and the majority will accept foreign cards.

What is the weather like in Hong Kong?

Hong Kong experiences a subtropical climate with mild winters and hot, wet and humid summers. The average temperature range across the year is 15–31°C (59–88°F) with rainfall at its heaviest from May through September. The large rain deposits over the summer come in the form of storms and downpours so while it will be wet, it won’t be wet for long.

Is Hong Kong safe for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

Despite Hong Kong’s liberal values, the city tends to follow traditional Chinese beliefs when it comes to sexuality. This means that homosexuality was considered a mental illness up until 2001 and though things have certainly improved, discrimination laws are not equal between LGBT and non-LGBT identifying citizens. There is still no legal recognition of same-sex relationships.

That said, Hong Kong is a hassle-free destination for LGBTQIA+ travelers that display discretion. Public displays of affection are rare in Hong Kong for both heterosexual and same-sex couples anyway, and Hong Kongers are generally very tolerant given their British history. Hong Kong also holds an annual Pride Parade, which is banned in mainland China.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting  Equaldex  or  ILGA   before you travel.

Is Hong Kong accessible for travelers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Hong Kong is one of the best cities in Asia for travelers with disabilities. Its modern public transport system is almost entirely accessible, including the MTR and ferry, though there are only a limited number of taxis with wheelchair ramps available. Most sights are accessible and there are plenty of accommodation options available depending on the individual traveler’s needs. Sidewalks in the touristed areas tend to have curb ramps too.

If you do live with a visual, hearing or other impairment, let your booking agent or group leader know early on so they’re aware and suitable arrangements can be made. As a general rule, knowing some common words in the local language, carrying a written itinerary with you and taking to the streets in a group, rather than solo, can help make your travel experience the best it can be.

What to wear in Hong Kong

Your wardrobe while visiting Hong Kong ultimately comes down to personal preference. You can get away with loose-fitting shirts, dresses, shorts or trousers for most of the year without too much discomfort. In summer, however, it can be particularly humid and wet so it’s best to wear breathable clothing and a light waterproof jacket or poncho. The winter evenings can get a little chilly too so it’s good to have a light sweater or a few layers to stay warm.

Hong Kong Tours & Travel

Hong Kong Attractions & Landmarks Guide

Hong Kong, a former British protectorate now ruled by mainland China, is an urban metropolis of glistening skyscrapers, but also with quick access to nature and the outdoors.  Travelers can visit the spectacular harbor and high-end Central shopping district, and then hike around the Dragon’s Back trail. Hong Kong is a great stopover as part of a larger China trip .

With great nightlife, mouthwatering cuisine, stunning city views and an intriguing East-meets-West culture, Hong Kong a can't-miss destination. Only problem is you may never want to leave!

Hong Kong Food Tours

Hong Kong has the highest ratio of restaurants to people in the world. In the city center, every type of food imaginable is readily available. It’s no surprise that many people come to Hong Kong with the main objective to try some exotic and incredible food - and going a culinary tour can help you just that. On a food tour, you can expect to be traveling with a small group (some food tours cap at 6 people), and with a guide who is bilingual.

For the food, you will be certain to try delicacies from many “hole in the wall” places off of the tourist map. You are sure to try some dim sum, where diners can try several dishes at once. Other Hong Kong specialities include wontons, roast goose, steamed dumplings, fish balls, pineapple bread, -- but with thousands more dishes served, you can only be sure what you will eat once you get there!

Nightlife in Hong Kong

Going out in Hong Kong is safe, fun, and relatively easy for foreigners, which makes it a popular activity. This massive and modern city has every type of bar imaginable, from high end whiskey bars, to rooftop bars with amazing views, to more casual karaoke bars primarily targeted at young people.

Lan Kwai Fong used to be the hotspot for partying in Hong Kong, and although this has begun shifting in recent years, you can still find plenty of fun venues there. The Wan Chai are is a great spot for higher-end drinking venues, and Soho is the spot for nightclubs. For a non-alcoholic alternative, try a local ying-yang tea.

Hong Kong Shopping

Hong Kong is China’s heart of retail, and shopaholics will fall in love with the city's many, many shopping malls, where all sorts of high end clothes and goods are available. Any big international clothing or technology brand will have a shop in Hong Kong, although you shouldn’t expect any significant markdown on prices.

If you are looking to spend a little more on your souvenir, Hong Kong also has an expansive art and antiques market. Because there are so many reproductions, the best way to ensure what you’re buying is genuine is to visit one of the many respected antique and art houses in the city.

Antique houses are fun to visit even if you aren’t buying -- they will have some of the most interesting and valuable rarities on display, and a collection with origins in many different Asian countries.

If you don’t want to spend thousands of dollars on a genuine antique but love the look of traditional Chinese and Japanese furniture, for example, then consider getting a reproduction of those pieces. Many antique houses will hire artisans to craft copies of furniture, pottery, and other trinkets using the process of the period and sell these at a marked down price.

Hong Kong also a vibrant and competitive contemporary art scene, which is still growing and aims to compete with the likes of New York and London.

For your more typical souvenirs, visit Ladies' Market or the nearby Night Market. To see some of Hong Kong’s particularly unusual shopping encounters, visit the Jade Market or the Goldfish Market.

Sightseeing in Hong Kong

Take a stroll up Hollywood road to take in some Hong Kong sights, such as Man Mo Temple, known for its abundance of incense. Another popular stop is at the some of the aforementioned art galleries, for example, visit the PMQ (Police Married Quarters), where local artists showcase their work.

If you are on a family friendly tour of Hong Kong , you may be directed to the free Zoological and Botanical Gardens in your free time. The Gardens have a spectacular collection of apes, reptiles, and an abundance of plants native to China and from around the world..

To get the best view of Hong Kong’s skyline, your best chance is at night. The views of Hong Kong aren't all that great during the day, when smog blankets the city and results in poor visibility. At night, however, the skyscrapers are lit up against a clear sky and reflected in the water, making for some incredible views.

One of the most popular viewpoints is Victoria Peak, which can be accessed by taking a tram up the hill. The top of the IFC is another common spot from which to view the city. Or, choose from one of Hong Kong's many rooftop bars, and take in the view while enjoying a drink.

Another way to get some of the best views in Hong Kong from the water is to take the Star Ferry from Tsim Sha Tsui to Central Hong Kong. This short boat ride offers a view of the city skyline that is particularly scenic as the sun is going down.

Day Trips from Hong Kong

On a multi day tour of Hong Kong, you are sure to go outside of the city and explore the surrounding areas. However, if your tour ends within the city, and If you have more time to spend in Hong Kong, try a visit to the New Territories, such as Sai Kung island, where you can take scenic boat trips or enjoy seafood on the promenade. Or take a cable car to see the Giant Buddha on Lantau island.

Disneyland is a popular attraction for younger children. Though it is smaller than those in other countries, it makes for a nice day trip, especially for families. Alternatively, you can visit Ocean Park, a theme park that also features marine life.

Hong Kong's stunning skyline

Yet the country also has one of the lowest birthrates, with almost 30% of its population set to be over 65 by 2030.

Hong Kong is one of my favorite cities in the world and I always fly into it when I visit Asia to take in the sights, eat dumplings and dim sum, and have a night out. I can’t get enough of the city, and if you are a foodie like me, it’s heaven — and it’s hard not to walk away a few pounds heavier either!

Hong Kong is one of the most exciting places on earth and, even after countless visits to other countries, the city remains in my top five. There’s nothing better than visiting Hong Kong. It is a city that delights all five senses.

From traditional street markets and beautiful temples to the fast-moving, skyscraper-dotted streets, to the endless food and drink options, there is so much to do here.

This is the best way to get across the harbor from Kowloon Island to Hong Kong Island. It gives you fantastic view of the city skyline for cheap (only 220 HKD)! It’s one of my favorite and simple pleasures of the city. It’s a must!!

3. Ride Ngong Ping 360

This cable car spans just under 6km (3.5 miles), offering a panoramic view of the city and mountains. The ride lasts about 25 minutes and offers AMAZING views of the city and ends up at Po Lin Monastery. Be sure to visit the Big Buddha when you arrive. Round-trip tickets start at 235 HKD.

4. Visit the street markets

The best places to soak up the atmosphere, busy vibe, sights, and sounds of Hong Kong. The best markets to go to are the Ladies Market, Temple Street Night Market, and the Stanley Market. You’ll find everything you need here (as well as lots of food).

5. Ride the Peak Tram

This tram takes you to the top of the Peak, Hong Kong Island’s largest mountain (you can walk up too). You get a spectacular view the skyscrapers of Victoria Harbor and Kowloon and a real sense of just how big and dense the city is from here. Return tickets are 99 HKD (47 HKD for children).

Other Things to See and Do in Hong Kong

1. sheung wan district.

Famous for its bird’s nest and shark fin soup (which you should not eat), this area reflects the old Hong Kong. High-end apartment and office blocks tower over small stores and traditional markets and it’s less developed with modern buildings than other parts of the city.

2. Jungle trekking

Outside the congested area of the city you’ll find lots of places to explore nature. You can explore or trek along one or more of the eight different “geo-areas” distributed across the Sai Kung Volcanic Rock Region and Northeast New Territories Sedimentary Rock Region. Both areas provide a great place to experience a side of the city few people ever see because they can’t escape the hustle and bustle of the area!

3. Have fun at Disneyland

If you’re on a family trip, or even if you’re a backpacker in touch with your inner child, head to Disneyland for a fun-filled day of rides, attractions, and junk food! Tickets are not cheap and a day in either park will put a dent in your wallet…but somethings are worth it! Adult admission is 619 HKD while children will cost 458 HKD for a single-day ticket.

4. Tsim Sha Tsui Waterfront

Stroll along the Tsim Sha Tsui Waterfront, and take in the breathtaking skyline view of Hong Kong island. While you’re here, make sure to visit the Avenue of Stars, Hong Kong’s answer to the Hollywood “Walk of Fame.” Best of all, it’s free!

5. Mai Po Natural Area

This endless stretch of mangrove forest and muddy swampland is a paradise for birds and invertebrates. Overs 430 kinds of birds have been documented here and the area is protected fromdevelopment. Since it’s a protected area, the World Wildlife Federation’s public guided tours are the only way to experience the area. Tours are Fri–Sun (starting at 9:30am), last tour at 2:30pm. From October to April you can even watch the annual migrations. It’s another option to see more than just the buildings of HK.

6. Visit the Po Lin Monastery

Built in 1924, this temple is situated on Lantau Island. It is commonly known as the ‘Buddhist Kingdom in the South,” and ranks as the most magnificent structure among the four Buddhist temples in Hong Kong. Admission to see the Buddhas statue is free, though it’s 78 HKD to see the exhibitions. The ticket includes a meal, though, which is worth the price — the food here is incredible!

7. Explore Tung Shoi Street

Also known as Ladies Street, this open-air bazaar is situated in the central area of Mong Kok. It is one of the busiest places in Hong Kong and is filled with shops and cheap goods. Remember to bargain!

8. Experience the nightlife at Lan Kwai Fong

LKF is the main nightlife and party area in Hong Kong and is filled with tons of bars, clubs, sheesha, and cheap drinks. Nights out here are wild and crazy and the place is packed any night of the week. If you’re looking to get wild, you can’t go wrong here. 001, Solas, Dragon I, and 6 Degrees are a few places I like to visit in the area when I’m looking for a night out.

9. Hike the Dragon’s Back

This trail is easily accessible from the city and is a nice way to spend a day outside the hustle and bustle of the city. The trail will take a around 4 hours and is moderately difficult, so be sure to bring lots of water. There are also plenty of other trails in and around the city, too!

10. Rent a junk boat

Don’t let the name fool you! Junk boats are a traditional Chinese sail boat that are still in use today, mostly just for tourists to cruise the bay in. If you can round up a group of 15 or so people you can rent an entire junk boat for the day (or half-day). Sail around the harbor in traditional style. Expect to pay at least 300 HKD per person (more for nicer boats).

11. Enjoy the nightlife

Hong Kong has some of the craziest nightlife options in Asia, from karaoke bars to wild street parties to packed clubs. Some notable options include the 007 speakeasy (with amazing Old Fashioned cocktails) and Dragon I, where you can dance until the early hours of the morning.

12. See a show

The popular Broadway Cinematheque is the place to go for indie films; it is also home to the Korean Film Festival (as well as other high-profile film festivals). For a deeper cultural experience, attend the Yau Ma Tei Theatre for some Cantonese opera.

13. Visit the museums

Hong Kong has an endless supply of museums, so take your pick! One of my favorites is the Hong Kong Heritage Museum, which gives you a look at the artistic culture of the city. Then visit the Hong Kong Museum of History to learn more about the city’s complicated and fascinating past. For something completely different, there are some galactic exhibitions at the SpaceMuseum.

Hong Kong Travel Costs

Hong Kong's stunning skyline

Private rooms in hostels start at around 250 HKD per night and go as high as 500 HKD for a double room.

Hotels – If hostels aren’t your thing, you can find budget hotel rooms for 325-650 HKD per night, depending on the location and amenities.

Airbnb is widely available in the city, with private rooms starting around 275 HKD per night. For an entire apartment, expect to pay closer to 800 HKD per night.

Food – Cheap market food such as noodles and dumplings will cost around 50 HKD per meal while casual restaurants with table service will cost around 100 HKD for a meal with a drink. A few of my favorite restaurants in the city are Butao Ramen @ Central, Din Tai Fung, and Lan Fong Yuen.

If you decide to splurge, you can expect to pay around 350 HKD or more for something fancy or western food (such as Italian, Steak, or American fare). But you’ll find there is enough cheap markets and noodle shops to keep you busy during your visits.

Drinks are roughly 35-50 HKD, though wine and fancy cocktails can be between 75-155 HKD. If you are going to buy your own groceries, expect to pay around 400 HKD per week for your basic staples.

Backpacking Hong Kong Suggested Budgets

Hong Kong isn’t cheap, but since it’s such a diverse and massive city, there’s something here for every budget and preference!

Here are some example budgets to help you get a sense of what to expect when you arrive:

On a backpacking budget, you should plan to spend 315-475 ($40-60 USD). This is a suggested budget assuming you’re staying in a hostel dorm, eating fast food occasionally but mainly cooking your own meals, using public transportation, and participating in basic activities like visiting museums.

On a mid-range of budget of 785-1,215 HKD ($100-155 USD) per day, you can stay in budget hotels, take buses between destinations, eat fast food, and do more excursions.

For a luxury budget of 2,650+ HKD ($335 USD and up) per day, you can afford to stay in nice hotels, hire a driver or Uber everywhere, do some guided tours, and eat out for every meal.

You can use the chart below to get some idea of how much you need to budget daily, depending on your travel style. Keep in mind these are daily averages — some days you’ll spend more, some days you’ll spend less (you might spend less every day). We just want to give you a general idea of how to make your budget. Prices are in USD.

Hong Kong Travel Guide: Money-Saving Tips

Hong Kong packs a lot of activities into a small amount of space — and that space is expensive! Prices here are much high than mainland China (as well as most of Asia) but there are still some ways you can save money. Here are some tips you’ll want to implement to keep your budget intact:

  • Eat at the buffets – Many restaurants offer an all you can eat menu for less than 110 HKD. They usually consist of noodle dishes, dim sum, and/or dumplings, making it a cheap and filling meal that provides a ton of value.
  • Avoid staying on Hong Kong Island – If possible, avoid staying on the island of Hong Kong. Kowloon and the other islands have much cheaper accommodation! If you do end up on Hong Kong island, Causeway Bay has most of the cheapest accommodation.
  • Visit the markets – Most locals shop at the markets as they offer the cheapest and freshest foods, at times up to 50% cheaper than grocery stores. Do all your grocery shopping here (especially when buying produce).
  • Stay in Chungking Mansion – While a far cry from even a 1-star hotel, Chungking Mansion offers the cheapest accommodation in the city. It’s not the nicest place (far from it) but it’s certainly an experience, as 4,000 other people also call the “mansion” home. Prices can be as low as 50HKD so if you are on a really tight budget, stay here.
  • Use hospitality networks – Since accommodation is expensive in Hong Kong, consider using Couchsurfing , a site that connects travelers with locals offering a free place to stay to encourage cross-cultural exchange. There are a lot of hosts (both locals and expats) who take part in the community, so you can almost always find one. The community organizes a lot of inperson meet-ups around town too, which is a fun way to make some new friends — even if you don’t want to sleep in their homes.
  • Get a transit day pass – Trains in Hong Kong can add up quickly as fares are based on distance. Getting a day pass will be much more economical if you are traveling all over the city and into the New Territories. A day pass is 65 HKD for adults and 30 HKD for children.
  • Skip the taxis – While taxi fares are not astronomical, the hectic traffic will make your bill add up quickly. Public transportation is affordable and reliable. Skip the taxis!
  • Buy an Octopus Card – While this doesn’t necessarily save money, it makes your life a lot more convenient, which is why 99% of the residents in Hong Kong use them. The card is a contactless payment tool that simplifies the process of buying things like tickets on public transportation (MTR, light rail, buses, ferries, trams, etc.), so you don’t have to carry around coins or pay in exact change. You can use it for virtually all forms of public transportation, at convenience stores, restaurants, shops, and tourist attractions. It acts like a pre-paid debit card. Get it to save you time and the hassle of fumbling for your cash every time you need something!
  • Avoid drinking wine – The price of drinking tends to run up your costs pretty unintentionally. At $80 HKD for a bad glass of vino, it’s not worth it. Save your money. This applies to fancy sugary cocktails too. Stick to beer or simple mixed drinks like vodka tonics, as they’re typically affordably priced.
  • Save money on rideshares – If you do need a ride, Uber is way cheaper than taxis and are the best way to get around a city if you don’t want to wait for a bus or pay for a taxi. The Uber Pool option is where can you share a ride to get even better savings (though you can get your own car too). You can save $15 off your first Uber ride with this code: jlx6v.

Where To Stay in Hong Kong

Hostels and guesthouses are plentiful in Hong Kong, ranging from the boutique to the downright squalid. Here are my recommended places to stay:

  • Hong Kong Hostel
  • Rainbow Lodge

For more hostel suggestions, here’s a list of my favorite hostels in Hong Kong !

How to Get Around Hong Kong

Hong Kong's stunning skyline

The subway runs late into the night and is very clean and efficient. Fares will cost between 5-25 HKD, depending on where you’re going.

The Star ferry between Hong Kong and Kowloon island is 2 HKD.

There is also a train to the airport (Airport Express Line) which departs every 10 minutes and costs 115 HKD per person (110 HKD with an Octopus Card). The journey takes around 25 minutes.

If you need to take a taxi, prices start at 25 HKD and go up by around 8 HKD per kilometer. Uber is also available, though it’s around the same price as a taxi after recent price increases, so either option will suffice.

To/From Shenzen – Buses are available from Hong Kong to Shenzen (the city in mainland China across the border), costing around 170 HKD per person. The journey takes around 1 hour and forty-five minutes.

Trains are available to Shenzen, China for around 109 HKD per person. The ride takes around 30 minutes.

Car Rental – With world-class public transportation and very cramped, busy driving conditions, I would not suggest travelers rent a car unless they have a very explicit need of one.

Ride-Sharing – Uber is your best bet for getting around if you don’t want to use public transportation as its cheaper than the taxis. You can save $15 off your first Uber ride with this code: jlx6v.

Hitchhiking – Hitchhiking here is virtually non-extent in Hong Kong. I don’t recommend it.

When to Go to Hong Kong

Because of its subtropical location, Hong Kong’s weather is generally mild in winter and uncomfortably hot and humid in summer. The best time to go is between November and March when the heat and humidity isn’t as bad. November and December are particularly good for finding reasonably priced accommodations. Tourism traffic starts getting busier after the New Year.

Generally, the summer months are not a good time to visit Hong Kong, as then there is the added threat of typhoons. The temperatures in the summer can get up to 31°C (88°F), which may not sound like a lot, but the humidity can be severe.

If you’re arriving during one of the major festivals or holidays (like Chinese/ Lunar New Year), you’ll want to book accommodations and tours well in advance. These can be some of the busiest times in Hong Kong, so plan accordingly. That being said, getting swept up in the chaos and fun atmosphere of the city during this time can be well worth it, if you don’t mind the price increase or the large crowds.

How to Stay Safe in Hong Kong

The crime rate in Hong Kong is relatively low, but you should still take precautions in crowds and on public transportation as those are the spots where pickpockets are most common. In addition to rare instances of petty theft, there are also numerous scams perpetrated on tourists, from fake monks to overcharging taxi drivers, but nothing that will endanger you physically.

If approached by a “monk” offering small trinkets or “blessings” just politely decline. Real Buddhist monks do not travel the streets hawking goods to tourists.

As for taxis, always make sure the driver uses the meter and that you only get in official, marked taxis. When in doubt, have your hostel or hotel call a taxi for you to ensure you get a reputable company.

Overall, Hong Kong is a safe place to backpack and travel – even if you’re traveling solo, and even as a solo female traveler. Violent attacks are rare. Petty theft (including bag snatching) is the most common type of crime, and even that is not very common. People are nice and helpful and you’re unlikely to get into trouble. The people who do tend to get into trouble are usually involved with drinking or drugs or sex tourism. Stay away from that stuff and you’ll be fine.

The most important piece of advice I can offer is to purchase good travel insurance. Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past. You can use the widget below to find the policy right for you:

Hong Kong Travel Guide: The Best Booking Resources

  • Hostelworld – This is the best hostel accommodation site out there with the largest inventory, best search interface, and widest availability.
  • Booking.com – The best all around booking site that constantly provides the cheapest and lowest rates. They have the widest selection of budget accommodation. In all my tests, they’ve always had the cheapest rates out of all the booking websites.
  • Get Your Guide – Get Your Guide is a huge online marketplace for tours and excursions. They have tons of tour options available in cities all around the world, including everything from cooking classes, walking tours, street art lessons, and more!
  • SafetyWing – Safety Wing offers convenient and affordable plans tailored to digital nomads and long-term travelers. They have cheap monthly plans, great customer service, and an easy-to-use claims process that makes it perfect for those on the road.

In this comprehensive guide, I'll be sharing insights into what sets the top agencies apart.

Table of Contents

Understanding Travel Agencies

Before we begin, let's get a solid understanding of travel agencies , their roles, and why they're so vital for a memorable travel experience.

What is a Travel Agency?

A travel agency is a business that plans and arranges travel itineraries for individuals, groups, or businesses. They take the hassle out of trip planning, doing the heavy lifting, so you don't have to. From booking flights and hotels to organizing local tours and even securing restaurant reservations, a competent travel agency handles all the details of your trip.

What is a Travel Agency

What Do Travel Agencies Do?

Travel agencies play multiple roles. They act as intermediaries between travelers and the vast world of travel services. And they leverage their extensive knowledge, expertise, and network to provide you with the best possible travel experience .

Also, they ensure your itinerary is efficient, your accommodations are comfortable, and your local excursions are captivating. They also manage any unforeseen circumstances, such as travel delays or cancellations, ensuring minimal disruption to your journey.

Why Use a Travel Agency?

In an era where DIY travel planning is just a few clicks away, one might wonder why a travel agency is necessary. The truth is, while planning a trip on your own can be exciting, it can also be overwhelming and time-consuming.

A travel agency offers an unrivaled depth of service. They not only curate personalized travel experiences based on your preferences but also provide support during your trip. With a travel agency, you get the peace of mind that comes with knowing you have an expert watching your back, ready to help you navigate any issues that might come up during your journey.

As an experienced traveler , I can't emphasize enough the importance of having a reliable travel agency. A case in point from my own travels is a trip to the Outback I undertook last year. I was left stranded due to a sudden flight cancellation. My travel agency not only arranged for an alternative flight but also managed to book a comfortable local inn for the night at a moment's notice. This experience highlighted for me the value a proficient travel agency brings to the table.

Criteria for Evaluating Travel Agencies

Choosing a travel agency is like selecting a trustworthy friend who will guide you through your journey. It's not a decision to be taken lightly. So, what should you consider when selecting a travel agency? Here are five critical criteria to guide your decision-making process .

Expertise in the Industry

One of the first things to look for in a travel agency is their level of expertise. How long have they been in the business? Do they specialize in specific types of travel, like adventure travel, luxury travel, or business trips? An agency with a wealth of experience and a clear focus will be able to offer you unique insights and suggestions that can enhance your travel experience.

For instance, during my backpacking trip to Europe, the travel agency I had chosen, known for its expertise in budget travel, suggested some offbeat yet affordable destinations. It added an unexpected richness to my journey without straining my budget.

Variety of Services Offered

A great travel agency should be a one-stop-shop for all your travel needs. Look for agencies that offer a wide range of services, from booking airfare and accommodation to arranging tours, transfers, and even visa assistance. The more comprehensive the services, the less you need to worry about, allowing you to focus on enjoying your trip.

Quality of Customer Service

Travel plans can sometimes go awry. Flights get delayed; reservations can fall through. In such instances, responsive and reliable customer service is crucial. A good travel agency will be there for you around the clock, ready to solve any problems that may arise. Be sure to check their availability: Can you reach them outside typical business hours? Do they have a local number you can call while you're abroad?

Price and Value for Money

Traveling can be a significant investment, so getting the most out of your money is essential. The best travel agencies provide an excellent balance of cost and value, ensuring that you get the best experience for your budget. They should be transparent about all costs involved, providing an all-inclusive quote without any hidden charges.

Customer Reviews and Ratings

Finally, don't forget to check out what other travelers have to say. Online reviews and ratings can provide an insight into the experiences of others with the agency. Look for consistent positive feedback about their services, responsiveness, and ability to deliver as promised.

Making the Choice: Tips for Choosing the Best Agency for You

Having an array of choices is a double-edged sword. On one hand, you're blessed with options. On the other hand, it can be overwhelming. Here are some practical tips to help you make an informed decision when choosing a travel agency that suits your needs.

Define Your Travel Needs and Preferences

Before you even begin the hunt, take a moment to outline your travel needs and preferences. Do you prefer guided tours or free exploration? Are you a budget traveler or a luxury enthusiast? Do you seek adventure or relaxation? The clearer your expectations, the easier it is to identify an agency that aligns with your travel style.

Do Your Research

In this digital age, every bit of information is at your fingertips. Use this to your advantage. Dig into the websites of potential travel agencies, explore their offerings, and read up on their client testimonials and reviews. Pay attention to their expertise and specializations.

Ask for Recommendations

There's nothing like a first-hand account to give you an accurate picture of a travel agency's services. Reach out to friends, family, or colleagues who've traveled recently. Ask about their experiences and whether they'd recommend their travel agency. This can provide valuable insights that might not be readily available online.

Compare Prices and Services

Once you have a shortlist of potential agencies, compare their prices and services. Look at the inclusions and exclusions in their travel packages. Be sure to factor in the quality of services, not just the cost. Cheapest isn't always the best.

Consider the Agency's Reputation

Finally, look at the agency's reputation in the industry. A travel agency that's been in business for a long time, has positive customer reviews, and has won industry awards is likely a safe bet.

Hong Kong Disneyland Resort Shines as Beacon of City’s Tourism, Rebound Outpacing the Overall Market

Publish Date

  • Improved fiscal year 2023 performance bolstered by record-high local attendance and strong rebound in inbound tourism
  • Resort posts profit in calendar year 2023, boosted by distinctly Disney storytelling at new land, attractions and nighttime spectacular
  • World of Frozen extends resort’s continued success, with record-breaking revenue, EBITDA and net profit in Q1 of calendar year 2024

June 25, 2024, HONG KONG – Hong Kong Disneyland Resort (HKDL) today shared its business results for the fiscal year of 2023 (FY23) and the latest resort developments. The theme park reported record-high local attendance and an encouraging rebound in mainland China and overseas visitation compared with pre-pandemic levels.

(With a year-end date on the Saturday closest to, if not on, 30 September, the fiscal year consists of 52 weeks with the exception that approximately every six years, the fiscal year comprises a 53-week period. Fiscal 2023 and 2022 were both a 52-week year ending on 30 September 2023 and 1 October 2022, respectively.)

The resort also announced a profit in calendar year 2023, driven by the success of a holistic strategy to create lifelong memories among local guests and robust campaigns that reignite tourists’ intent to visit following the resumption of inbound tourism in early 2023.

“We have entered a new era. I am extremely proud of all we have accomplished at Hong Kong Disneyland Resort in the lead-up to our 20th anniversary, achieving profitability in calendar year 2023 and our rebound in visitors outpacing the overall Hong Kong tourism market ,” said Michael Moriarty, managing director, Hong Kong Disneyland Resort.

(HKDL’s non-local attendance recovery has outpaced Hong Kong’s total visitor arrival recovery according to figures from the Hong Kong Tourism Board, comparing the same period in 2023 and 2018.)

“And the strong momentum continues. The first quarter of calendar year 2024 was our most successful quarter ever, achieving record levels of revenue, EBITDA and net income.”

Moriarty added that HKDL has firmly established itself as a key driver and contributor to Hong Kong’s economy and community through its ongoing investment in bespoke attractions, experiences and storytelling, as well as its corporate citizenship efforts.

“Through a series of record-breaking achievements, fueled by creativity and innovation, including our new signature offerings — the reimagined Castle of Magical Dreams, ‘Momentous’ Nighttime Spectacular and most recently, World of Frozen, we have become a drawcard for Hong Kong tourists,” Moriarty added.

“We’ve created a unique, world-class tourist destination in the Greater Bay Area for our guests in Hong Kong and the region, who have embraced Disney in their own favorable way.”

The rebound of non-local guest attendance outpaced Hong Kong’s overall visitor arrivals recovery in calendar year 2023 when compared with 2018 levels. This positive momentum continued in Q1 of calendar year 2024. Rebound in mainland guest attendance was particularly strong.

Strong FY23 Business Performance

In FY23, HKDL delivered solid financial performance across the board with strong growth compared to the prior fiscal year, despite the impact of travel restrictions under the pandemic for nearly half of the fiscal year.

  • Revenue grew 156% to HK$5.7 billion
  • EBITDA improved by 207% to HK$924 million
  • Net loss improved by 83% to HK$356 million
  • Per capita spending grew 54%
  • Total attendance grew 87% to 6.4 million
  • Hotels’ utilisation rate for the year was 77% and overall occupancy increased by 23 percentage points to 47%

(Hotel utilisation is calculated based on adjusted available capacity, which excludes room inventory temporarily removed from service having regard to a number of factors, such as the temporary closure of hotel rooms for planned renovation and management’s best estimates of the market situation and operational needs.)

HKDL’s local guest affinity continued to grow, with FY23 seeing historically high local attendance, including record attendance among young adults and students from Disney Youth Programs.

In December 2023, the resort marked an important milestone, welcoming its 100 millionth guest since opening in 2005.

Notably, in December 2023, HKDL fully repaid the revolver facility funded by a subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company and has not drawn on it thereafter.

Key Accomplishments

  • Distinctly Disney experiences spur continued growth: HKDL continuously invests in its offerings to create an exceptional guest experience. The addition of Ant-Man and The Wasp: Nano Battle! in 2019, the reimagined Castle of Magical Dreams in 2020, castle daytime show “Follow Your Dreams” in 2021, “Momentous” Nighttime Spectacular in 2022 and World of Frozen in 2023 have contributed to the resort’s strong rebound.
  • Successful seasonal programs powered by popular Disney franchises: Leveraging Disney popular franchises such as Mickey and Friends, Duffy and Friends, Marvel Super Heroes, Disney Villains, Pixar etc., HKDL’s seasonal events for Chinese New Year, spring, summer, Halloween, and Christmas continue to prove successful and attract guests to HKDL all year round.
  • Reignite source markets: As travel began its path towards resuming to normal levels, HKDL swiftly launched extensive marketing and sales efforts, deepening its penetration in both the international and mainland China markets and reigniting visit intent among inbound tourists.
  • Experiential offerings and entertainment: New immersive products such as “Duffy and Friends Play House” and “Marvel Season of Super Heroes” in addition to live entertainment shows like “StellaLou's Wonderful Wishes Ballet” and the “Disney Live in Concert!” series further enhanced HKDL’s status as one of Hong Kong’s iconic tourism draws.
  • Guest-centric premium products and offerings: HKDL is committed to bringing iconic Disney storytelling to life, continually introducing innovative ways to enhance the guest experience. New merchandise and F&B offerings, alongside Disney Premier Access – a favorite among tourists have all contributed towards record per capita spending.
  • Ramping up operational capacity: In early 2023 when travel began its path towards resuming to normal levels, HKDL adjusted its operations to open six or seven days a week from June 2023 to meet guest demand. Disney Explorers Lodge also resumed seven-day operations in April 2023, while Disney’s Hollywood Hotel reopened in July 2023.

Continued Contributions to Hong Kong’s Economy and Community

  • Contributing to Hong Kong’s economy: Since opening in 2005, the total direct and indirect value generated by HKDL amounted to HK$129.6 billion.
  • Creating job opportunities for magic makers: Since opening in 2005, it has cumulatively created 290,700 jobs (in terms of full time equivalent labor years) and is one of Hong Kong’s largest employers in the tourism and family entertainment industry.
  • Sharing Disney magic throughout the community: More than 100,000 complimentary theme park tickets were provided to NGOs to help bring happiness to people in underserved communities in FY23. Over 16,000kg of surplus food, equivalent to approximately 40,000 meals, were donated to the community through the resort’s food donation program.
  • Delivering happiness and support through volunteering: HKDL cast members have contributed nearly 120,000 Disney VoluntEARS hours since opening in 2005, delivering happiness, support and comfort to the community.
  • Fostering family for many: HKDL employed more than 5,600 full-time and 3,000 part-time staff on average in FY24 Q2. More than 2,000 cast members, or about one-third of HKDL’s workforce, have completed 10 or more years of service with the company. Nearly 60% of HKDL’s total workforce has worked at the company for five or more years. In March 2024, the resort held its first-ever Service Celebration to recognize the cast members and Imagineers for their service to the company, including several of whom have been with the company since before opening day in 2005.

HKDL is dedicated to the Hong Kong community and serving those in need. Throughout the year, the resort remained steadfast in its corporate social responsibility commitments, including:

  • Spearheading innovation: Inspiring creativity among future generations through the Disney Imaginations Hong Kong competition.
  • Making dreams come true: Continued longstanding support of Make-A-Wish Hong Kong to grant life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses.
  • Championing sports development: Rolling out youth sports training initiatives and supporting those in need.
  • Promoting inclusivity and arts accessibility: Integrating theatrical interpretation into popular shows, with performers incorporating sign language through body movements.
  • Caring for the environment: Building the city’s single largest solar panel site and incorporating sustainable design and processes in the park.

Non-stop, Year-round Excitement

Throughout 2024, guests will continue to see distinctly Disney, world-class experiences. The opening of World of Frozen, combined with seasonal surprises throughout the year, promises to captivate fans and guests from around the world.

In closing, Moriarty said, “As HKDL celebrates its 20th anniversary next year, stay tuned for thrilling updates and offerings to come!”.

Taiwan urges citizens to avoid travel to China, Hong Kong, Macao following Beijing threats

Taiwan urges citizens to avoid travel to China, Hong Kong, Macao following Beijing threats

Taipei: Taiwan has urged its citizens to avoid travel to China and the semi-autonomous Chinese territories of Hong Kong and Macao following threats from Beijing to execute supporters of the self-governing island democracy’s independence.

Spokesperson and deputy head of the Mainland Affairs Council Liang Wen-chieh issued the advisory at a news conference on Thursday.

Chinese hackers step up attacks on taiwanese companies, warns cybersecurity firm.

  • US approves new $360 million arms sale to Taiwan for drones, related equipment

That came amid growing threats from China, which claims Taiwan as its own territory to be annexed by force if necessary.

China’s threat to hunt down and execute “hardcore” Taiwan independence supporters follows the election of Lai Ching-te of the pro-independence Democratic Progressive Party as President.

China has refused all contact with Taiwan’s government since the election in 2016 of former President Tsai Ing-wen of the DPP, who refused to endorse Beijing’s demand that Taiwan recognises itself as a part of China, seen as a prelude to political unification between the sides.

“In response to the new guidelines related to the so-called secession crime’, the government has the responsibility to remind citizens that there are genuine risks involved” in such visits, Liang said.

The government is not banning visits, but those that do travel should not express political opinions or carry books or post online about topics that the authoritarian Communist Party would use to detain and potentially prosecute them.

Hundreds of thousands of Taiwanese live in China or travel their for business, tourism or family visits each year. China has also hosted visits by local Taiwanese officials and leaders of the opposition Nationalist Party, which backs eventual unification between the sides.

The sides operate direct flights and mainland Chinese are permitted to visit, although Beijing has severely restricted tourism to the island as a means of bringing economic pressure on the government in addition to its threatening military exercises and the daily deployment of warships and military planes around the island.

Speaking at the investor day in Hong Kong , chief executive Roy Gori says the higher targets come after the company has gone through a significant transformation where it has off-loaded risk and is well placed to capitalize on global trends.

Gori says the insurer, which been operating in Asia since 1897, sees tremendous potential in the region as its middle class is set to grow to 3.5 billion by 2030, up from two billion today.

He says the company will also benefit from the expected doubling of the global population of people over age 65 by 2050, and the company’s scale will allow it to adapt well to the increasing push to consumer digitization.
