Laos Walks & Cycle Tours

Buddha statue in Vientiane | Peter Walton

Lush, languid and welcoming, it's easy to see why travellers are lured back to Laos. With its meandering rivers, remote villages and tranquil cities, Laos is famous for a gentle pace that invites you to slow down, relax and absorb your surroundings.

But this is by no means a boring destination: Laos's cities are a unique mix of golden Buddhist temples, French colonial architecture and colourful markets, thick with aromas of incense and fragrant street food, and yet you need not travel far to find waterfalls, caves and jungle-clad mountains to explore.

You can tour splendid temples and handsome colonial architecture in Vientiane, and unwind in the tranquil river city of Luang Prabang, with its saffron-robed monks and vibrant night markets. Then delve into the history of Southeast Asia by visiting the ancient Hindu Khmer ruins of Wat Phu or walking among the mysterious stone megaliths of the Plain of Jars.

Enjoy Laos's wild natural beauty with a cruise down the lush waterways of the mighty Mekong or a sojourn in the stunning 4,000 Islands of southern Laos. Don your boots and trek through the remote northern mountains, join one of our superb cycle journeys through scenic backroads and ethnic minority villages, or kayak down rivers fringed with dramatic karst outcrops.

Whichever itinerary you choose, you'll love the unique landscapes, cultures, cuisine and ambiance of this unspoiled gem of Southeast Asia.

Experienced local guides

It is our expert field guides that make your Laos experience special. Not only are our guides passionate about the otudoors, but they choose to lead our trips with a deep belief that our itineraries minimise our environmental footprint and give back to local communities.

Support of local communities

We employ staff from local communities and provide them with training, good wages and insurance benefits under the labor law. We also use locally run accommodation and encourage travellers to shop and dine at locally operated stalls and establishments.

Carbon travel minimisation

Our itineraries are designed to minimise the amount of carbon produced, opting for bikes, city walks, cyclos and electric cars as first options.

Child safe tourism

We protect vulnerable children by adhering to our comprehensive Child Welfare Code of Conduct and seek to educate travellers about the issues surrounding such abuses.

Animal welfare focus

We advocate against the practice of riding on the back of an elephant as part of a tourism experience and as such, we do not include elephant rides in any of our Cambodia itineraries. In the interest of public safety and animal welfare we also discourage travellers from partaking in such activities outside of our trips.

In cities or large towns you will be accommodated in 3 to 4 star properties that are centrally located, atmospheric and reliable.

We use quality inns situated in natural environments. They are not luxury inns; however we ensure they offer you a truly authentic experience.

Our lodges provide comfortable accommodation that is well maintained and with good facilities.

Laos has a tropical monsoon climate with three distinct seasons:

A rainy/monsoon season from May to October, a cool dry season from November to February, and a hot dry season from March to April.

April is the hottest month. It is necessary to take along a warm jumper or fleece during the cool season as nights can be cool, especially in mountainous areas such as Luang Prabang. Between March and June, light cotton clothing and hats are recommended.

On average you can expect daytime temperatures of between 25-32°C (77-90°F), with cooler night temperatures.

In Vientiane, average daily temperatures vary from a minimum of 16.4°C (62°F) to a maximum of 28.4°C (83°F) in January; to a minimum of 24.7°C (76°F) to a maximum of 31.3°C (88°F) in July.

In Luang Prabang, average daily temperatures vary from a minimum of 14.2°C (58°F) to a maximum of 27.7°C (82°F) in January; to a minimum of 24.3°C (76°F) to a maximum of 32.5°C (91°F) in July.

Lao Trekking Guide Experienced Northern Phongsaly

My name is Kham

Since my teenage years, I have been trekking around Laos as a tour guide for over 7 years. Born in an ethnic minority village, I speak several languages. Additionally, I attended college, so I am fluent in English as well. I live with my wife and kids close to Oudomxay but have worked for years in Phongsaly and Muang Khua too, giving me extensive knowledge of northern Laos. Take a look at the tours on offer on this page, but feel free to call me or send a message to discuss your travel details and wishes!

Private Car Tour Laos

Private car tours in Northern Laos

We also arrange road trips (with a driver) for those who do not fancy a multi-day trek. These range between 3 and 5 days and start in Muang Xay as it is easy to reach. This tour can also be organized as a one-way trip to Phongsali from where you could continue to Vietnam.

Practical Information

What is included.

In addition to the breathtaking views, stays in villages with local residents, and exciting hikes, the following is included: meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner), drinking water, homestays with local families, an English-speaking guide, transport as outlined in the trekking itinerary, taxi fares, and village fees.

What to bring?

If you require soft drinks, snacks, or sweets, please bring them along. During the trek, obtaining these items can be challenging and may incur additional expenses. Please be aware that in some instances, sanitary facilities may be limited. Feel free to consult your guide for more information specific to your trek.

Support the locals!

Some of the villages we will visit and stay in may be economically challenged. They would deeply appreciate a gift. This could include pens, pencils, and paper for the students. Another excellent option is sports equipment for the children or soap and vegetable seeds. In certain villages, locals sell indigo products, which also greatly supports them.

Customs & hygiene

Some of the villages we will visit are located in remote areas. The residents in these areas typically do not have toilets and take showers in open public spaces. The customs of some of the tribes we visit are different than in the city. Always heed the recommendations of your guide, as customs can vary among different ethnic groups.

Cloud Forests of Laos

Trekking the Cloud Forests of Laos

If you’re the kind of person who likes “type 2” fun (and if you don’t know what that is, you’re probably not) — this one’s for you.

Roughing it in jungle camps, hiking for days into deep, wild rainforest, scrambling up to mountain summits, and trying to ignore the mozzies and leeches — all for some of the most magnificent scenery imaginable: that’s what this trip is all about.

Transport in detail

Transfers to and from the trekking area will be by private car from Luang Prabang: a seven-hour trip each way with a stop in Nong Khiaw on the return journey.

What's great

This is a unique trek in a spectacular location: an unforgettable experience for seasoned walkers

It’s really off the beaten track, so expect to be the only tourist for miles around

Summitting Phou Louey, “Forever Mountain”, is a fantastic sense of achievement

Your trip will support conservation and sustainable development in this protected area

Things to consider

It rather goes without saying, but this trip involves challenging trekking and requires a high level of physical fitness

Accommodation is basic throughout, with limited facilities (remember, this is type 2 fun)

Though you’ll certainly see some wildlife on your trek, there’s no guaranteeing what!

This itinerary focuses on just a couple of locations; if you want to see more of Laos, consider extending your trip

The route is only accessible for part of the year - October through to May

The experience

Even the most committed hikers are entitled to have other interests, so if you want to see more of Laos than the rainforest – just let us know. We can incorporate trekking into any itinerary; it all depends on you.

Luang Prabang/Nam Et-Phou Louey National Protected Area

After a night in Luang Prabang to acclimatise, your adventure begins as you travel deep into the Laotian wilderness. Accompanied by experienced guides, you’ll embark on a five-day trek into the heart of the rainforest, where elephants, gibbons, clouded leopards and sun bears still live hidden in the tangled depths. Each day you’ll hike for three-to-six hours, ascending up to 1,274 m in elevation and stopping to cool off in waterfall pools, explore Khmu villages, and enjoy spectacular views over mountains, forest, and oceans of clouds. Spend your evenings around the campfire and your nights in bamboo huts surrounded by the sounds of the jungle: this is Laos at its wildest and most beautiful.

Close up forest scenery in Nam Et Phou Louey NPA

Trek through Khmu minority villages and farmlands far from the modern world

Homestay with Khmu families and sleep in hanging jungle “nests”

Climb to the top of Phou Louey, “Forever Mountain”, the third-highest peak in Laos

Cool off in refreshing pools beneath jungle waterfalls

Help the park rangers check wildlife camera traps for rare animal sightings

Climb a watchtower to observe wild animals visiting a salt lick

Nam Et Phou Louey landscape

Nong Khiaw/Luang Prabang

After concluding your trek, it’s time to return to Luang Prabang, stopping for a night at a riverside lodge, surrounded by some of the most dramatic karst scenery in Laos, before continuing along the Mekong. You’ve earned a rest, and there's no lovelier place for it than Luang Prabang! Once you’ll taken some time to relax and freshen up, head out to explore this beautiful city with its unique fusion of traditional Lao and colonial French influences. One of our favourite things to do here is to take a boat out to the Pak Ou Caves for sunset — and if your legs can still manage it, be sure to climb to the top of Mount Phousi for some of the best views around.

Aerial view of Nong Khiaw

See some of Asia's most beautiful karst scenery at Nong Khiaw

Cruise along the Mekong to visit the Pak Ou Caves, filled with Buddha statues

Laos is a wonderful country for trekking and the northern part of the country offers the best choice. This tour cuts across northern Laos taking in some interesting trekking and beautiful boat rides along the way before finishing in the old royal capital of Luang Prabang.

After a comfortable last night in Thailand, this tour starts with a transfer to Huay Xai for the border crossing into Laos. Once in Laos we head north to Luang Namtha, on the edge of Nam Ha National Park where you will spend the next day doing a little trekking (we can also organise 3 and 5 day treks in this area). From here we transfer via the scenic town of Oudomxay, to Muang Khua for a private boat cruise down the Nam Ou River to Muang Ngoi. After a restful night we will be trekking to a T'ai Deng village where we will spend the night in a community bamboo guest house and enjoy a Baci ceremony. The next morning, and after a little more trekking, we head down stream to Nong Khiaw on a long tail traditional boat and have the afternoon to relax before a full day of trekking along the 100 waterfalls adventure trail the next day.

From the wilderness to Luang Prabang, we experience Lao life as it once was with the continuation of alms for the monks and a traditional night market. Your last 3 nights will be spent in this peaceful city with activities such as a city tour and day trip trekking to Kuang Si Waterfall.

This is a sample private tour itinerary and we can customise the daily itinerary, duration and accommodation levels and styles as much or as little as you wish.

Chiang Rai hotel

Extra day in Chiang Rai - pre-tour Single room supplement (LATMLT)

Today we travel from our accommodation to Huay Xai. Following your completion of border formalities, we head out of the town to Luang Namtha. This road has recently been improved, and is now a very smooth and comfortable drive. We visit hill tribe villages along the road at Muang Phouka and other surrounding areas. We arrive in Luang Namtha in the afternoon where you have the rest of the day at leisure.

Luang Namtha hotel

The trip starts with a climb up to Phoumpok Stupa a great view point, offering panoramic views of Luang Nam Tha town. We then head into the jungle with your local guide, who will show you the different types of medicines and foods you can collect in the forest. For lunch you will have a wonderful picnic prepared by your guide and some local villagers. They will use bamboo pipes to cook either Black Tai or Akha style food and you will dine in the heart of the jungle.

After lunch, we continue trekking for another 45 minutes, and eventually reach Ban Nammutmai, a picturesque Akha minority village built on the hillside. Here you will learn about the life of this small ethnic minority group. Your guide will translate and explain to you old folklore stories from the locals. After this village visit, we travel by pickup truck to the Lanten village of Ban Nam Jang, where they specialize in the making of Saa paper. The trip ends when we return to the Luang Nam Tha market. Here you will see many of the forest products found along the trail being sold in the market. You will arrive back at your accommodation by mid afternoon.

Breakfast, Lunch

You have the morning at leisure to relax in beautiful surroundings, before we get back on the road, heading south to the town of Oudomxay. After making a number of stops to admire the scenery, we reach Oudomxay by late afternoon. Overnight in Oudomxay.

Oudomxay hotel

The local market also attracts numerous ethnic minorities who converge from the surrounding mountainsides or valley to barter and trade their goods. We visit this congregation before setting off on our journey east to the riverside town of Muang Khua. En route we have the chance to visit the intriguing Pra Xack Kham Temple with its sacred Buddha image. The 400 years old legendary statue is said to have many supernatural powers, and is widely worshipped among the faithful local Buddhists. We also stop at the market of Xin Sai, which is very colourful as many of the ethnic minorities meet to exchange goods here. Upon arrival in Muang Khua, we board our private boat for the cruise down the Nam Ou River to Muang Ngoi, arriving there early evening.

Muang Ngoi hotel

This morning, we begin trekking 2 hours to Ban Houay Boor (a Khmu and T'ai Deng ethnic village). After lunch at villager's home in Ban Houay Boor, continue trekking in the afternoon to Ban Na (a T'ai Deng village) and Ban Houaisene, where we stay overnight at community bamboo guesthouse. Before dinner, enjoy a Baci ceremony and traditional music show with the villagers.

Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

This morning, after breakfast, we begin trekking through the rice fields and beautiful landscape back to Muang Ngoi. We then embark a long tail traditional boat for a leisurely 1hour trip downstream on the Nam Ou River, enjoying the lush green forests and landscape until arrival at Nong Khiaw. Afternoon at leisure.

Nong Khiaw hotel

Full day trekking around Nong Khiaw, or for more adventurous clients the new 1-day 100 waterfalls adventure trail can be enjoyed. For anyone wishing to enjoy a truly stunning experience on the newly discovered 100 waterfalls adventure trail, we'll start the day with a peaceful boat ride on the Nam Ou river. We then explore a small Lao village along the river side before heading into the waterfalls learning about village way of life along the way. Walking through small streams and rice paddies you arrive at the bottom of the 100 waterfalls which were first discovered (by foreigners) in October 2008. The next few hours we see only water and jungle and hear the sound of clear waterfall cascades. The pools around you are very inviting for a refreshing splash. Our guide will lead us through the cascades and prepare a local style lunch on the falls in the middle of amazingly green nature. A small village trail on the top of the 100 waterfalls will lead us back down into the valley offering spectacular views over the landscapes of the Nam Ou valley. Hiking back to the village we will have more time to see the daily life here on the Nam OU riverside village and than head back with a small boat which will bring us back to Nong Khiaw.

After breakfast today we'll begin our journey to Luang Prabang. Our first stop along the way will be to the traditional Thai Lue Minority village of Ban Na Yang, set 12km from the mainroad). In the village you'll be able to witness a traditional way of life, see local houses and local hand-weaving techniques. Next, we'll transfer to Ban Pak Ou where you'll have time to take a break for lunch at a riverside restaurant, with views of the Nam Ou and Mekong Rivers. After lunch we'll head to the mysterious caves of Pak Ou, two linked caves crammed with thousands of gold lacquered Buddha statues of various shapes and sizes left by devoted pilgrims. We make the remainder of our journey by river to the UNESCO World Heritage City of Luang Prabang. This former royal capital with its gleaming temple roofs, fading colonial architecture and stunning mountain backdrop retains a unique charm rarely found in all Asia.

Luang Prabang hotel

This morning we begin our walking tour taking in some the cities most beautiful temples. Depending on the rest of your programme this may include the magnificent Wat Xiengthong, with its roofs sweeping low to the ground, representing the classical Luang Prabang style, as well as Wat Mai and Wat Sene, the oldest temple in Luang Prabang. We also stop by at Kinnaly Gallery, where your guide will show you the different ethnic minorities that live in Laos. We end the tour with a climb up Mount Phousi, which offers a spectacular panoramic view over Luang Prabang and the Mekong River. Overnight in Luang Prabang.

Leaving Luang Prabang with your private guide and driver, you travel for around one hour and twenty minutes out of the town. On the way you pass through beautiful scenery and rural landscapes with rice terraces and pineapple fields. You visit Ban Longlao a local H'mong village where the culture, customs and language are all different to mainstream Laos. Your trek starts from the H'mong village and takes between two and two and half hours through primary forest and jungle before reaching the spectacular Kuang Si Waterfall. Lunch (not included) can be taken at the falls with time for relaxation, swimming and the possibility to climb to the top of the waterfall. Afterwards you return to Luang Prabang in time to catch the sun setting over the Mekong.

Air-conditioned rooms at Wiang Hotel are decorated with northern Thai furnishings. All are equipped with a satellite TV, minibar and telephone.

Guests can relax with a massage, or enjoy a night of karaoke with friends. The hotel offers laundry and dry cleaning services.

Sample Thai, Chinese and European dishes at Wiang Inn Coffee Shop, or sip cocktails at the Lobby Lounge. Room service is also available.

The Boat Landing

The Boat Landing

Luang Namtha

 The Boat Landing

The Boat Landing Guest House is an eco-lodge in Luang Namtha, Laos' northwestern most province, with access to the Nam Ha Protected Area, the Namtha River and Lao ethnic villages for rafting, trekking, and biking trips. The restaurant serves local Lao food with a large selection of vegetarian choices. The guesthouse is located 6km from the provincial town and just 1km from the airport.

After a day out and about you can come back and relax in comfort and style. On the banks of the Namtha, enjoy genuine Luang Namtha cuisine in our open verandah restaurant while watching life by the river.

The bungalows are constructed with local materials in a local Lao style adapted for comfort. Lounge on the verandah in a grassy acacia grove, watch locals fish for their evening meal, butterflies alighting, children swimming and boats passing up and down the river.

The rooms aspire to tastefully combine local tradition while providing the guests with the comforts of home. Each room has a modern bathroom fitted with solar hot water. Go to sleep soothed by the evening breeze and the night sounds of the river.

Villa Keoseumsack

Villa Keoseumsack

Villa Keoseumsack offers a comfortable setting while in Oudomxay. It also provides a hair salon, a 24-hour reception and a coffee bar.

There are a range of facilities available to those staying at the hotel, including a shuttle service, a laundry service and laundry facilities. The property's garden is a peaceful spot to sit and relax.

The comfortable rooms at Villa Keoseumsack include a private bathroom, bottled water and a refrigerator.

On-site dining options include a restaurant, which is an ideal place to have a meal.

Lattanavongsa

Lattanavongsa

In a green courtyard, Lattanavongsa offers 12 solidly-built wooden bungalows. As the first guesthouse to offer en-suite bathrooms, this was once the most luxurious place in town.

Though the others have now caught up, it remains a top choice and its bungalows are spotlessly clean, have reasonably soft beds, and window screens to keep out mosquitoes and other creepy-crawlies. Of course, each bungalow has its own bathroom with a Western toilet, sink and hot shower (once the electricity is on).

There are no river views here, but porches with plastic chairs and green space give guests plenty of room to congregate. The Lattanavongsa restaurant is further up the road near the boat landing and also exchanges money.

Nongkiau Riverside

Nongkiau Riverside

In a class of its own, Riverside's elegant bungalows are romantically finished with mosquito nets, ambient lighting, wooden floors and woven bedspreads. Each includes an attractively finished bathroom and a balcony for blissful river views of the looming karsts. The views get better the further you venture from the striking reception area and restaurant, so ask for a higher-numbered room. The restaurant is surprisingly affordable and has breathtaking views.

All 15 bungalows feature a spacious 40 square meters private room with big private balcony and large bathroom. The balconies faces the river with stunning view of the river and mountains. Due to limited electricity supply there is no air conditioning, but as it's almost never hot in the night time you are more likely to value our very hot showers and bed heaters in the cold season. All rooms have fridge, safety box, electric kettles, free tea and coffee and beds are covered with mosquito nets.

Villa Chitdara

Villa Chitdara

Luang Prabang

 Villa Chitdara

For those looking for a friendly base in the centre of Luang Prabang, the Villa Chitdara is a great choice. The property is located just a 3 minute walk from the famous night market and for those wanting to experience the morning Alm’s Giving, this often takes place right outside the hotel. Rooms here are equipped with all modern amenities including balconies, air-conditioning, TV and tea/coffee making facilities.

Our tours are designed to include all that you need to enjoy a really special time in the destination you‘re visiting. However, we do also offer some extra options to complement the tour and add some additional sightseeing or activities, or some extra time at either end of the tour.

All accommodation based options (e.g. Single supplements, extra nights, cruise upgrades) should be booked and paid for in advance so that we can make the appropriate arrangements. Other options may either be booked and paid for in advance or while you are on the tour, though we recommend booking in advance to ensure there are no issues with availability.

Many options are priced the same throughout the year, but some may incur single or high season supplements - full details are given on the tour reservation form or on request.

We use good quality hotels rated at the 2 and 3-star level hotels and guest houses on this tour. Accommodation is based on twin, triple or double en-suite rooms. Whilst trekking you should expect more basic accommodation. Please visit the accommodation tab of this tour for examples of the hotels normally used on this tour. If you have any specific accommodation requests please let us know and we'll be happy to provide you with a customised quotation.

Our trips feature a mix of different transport options. We want you to feel like you're really experiencing the country you're travelling through, but at the same time we want you to finish journeys refreshed enough to enjoy the next stage of the tour. With this in mind we use public transport where we think it offers a good local experience & this may include local buses and local ferries. We also use private transportation including jeeps, song- thaews or pickup trucks, and mini buses for sightseeing tours where required.

The tour includes a 24-hour arrival and departure airport-hotel transfer service and all other transfers. Arrival transfers will be provided from Chiang Rai Airport (Thailand) and departures to Luang Prabang Airport (Laos).

We want to give you as much flexibility as possible when it comes to booking your holiday with us. So, to take account of people with varying travel plans, we don’t include your international flights in the main tour price. We are however very happy to suggest flights to go with the tour. Please contact us with your preferred dates and departure airport and we’ll give you a selection of airlines, times and fares to choose from.

Your airport arrival & departure transfers are included on the first and last days of the tour.

Most of our Thailand tours start and finish in Bangkok, and include an arrival and departure airport transfer from/to Bangkok international airport (BKK). However, some tours also finish on one of Thailand's islands. Transfers back to Bangkok or to one of the nearby island airports can be arranged on request.

We do also sometimes advertise flight inclusive packages from selected airports. Where these are shown on our website, prices are correct at the time of quoting, but are subject to continued availability of the fare used. Prices will be reconfirmed at the time of booking, and we will also provide the flight times and airline details before tickets are issued.  Flight inclusive prices are based on the cheapest Economy ticket class available which is generally non-refundable and non-changeable unless the flight is cancelled for reasons such as Covid-19, in which case the airlines are more flexible. More flexible ticket options, as well as Premium Economy and Business Class tickets are available on request for an additional supplement. Any changes made to flight inclusive bookings will be subject to the airline rules on your ticket.

Flight CO2 Emissions:

Traveling by air is an amazing way to explore the world, but flights also contribute to carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions that impact the environment. By considering the airline's CO2 emissions when you choose your flight, you can help minimize your travel footprint.

When selecting your international flights and airline, we do therefore recommend that you try and also take into account the flight CO2 emissions. Some airlines and flight search websites (eg. Google Flights, Skyscanner) do publish this information, so you can compare between your flight options and make an informed decision. Thankfully, many airlines are working towards sustainability efforts, and choosing a greener option allows you to contribute to positive change while still enjoying your incredible adventure.

As we don't offer guaranteed group departures on this tour we can run the itinerary for however many people you happen to be travelling with, starting from 1 upwards. The prices given for this tour are based on a minimum of 2 passengers travelling, so if you have a different number of passengers in your group please contact us for a customised quotation.

In Laos we provide fully trained, local English-speaking guides for all of the sightseeing tours. At Encounters Travel we only use local guides and reps. We feel this gives you the best experience of the country and the sites you are seeing. Please check our website for more details and profiles of some of our most famous guides.

The tour price includes entrance fees to all the tourist sites mentioned in the itinerary.  You will need to cover the cost of entrance to any other extra sites that you may wish to visit.

Tipping is not part of Thai culture but has become customary but not compulsory in the tourist and service industry. Tipping is always optional, and any amounts paid should reflect excellent service. You may therefore wish to tip your guide and driver at the end of the tour.  You should not feel obliged to tip any particular amount, and should consider your personal budget. We are often asked to provide a guide however, and can suggest that approx. GBP 5 / USD 8 per person per day would be appropriate.

You should ensure you are fully insured for medical emergencies including emergency evacuation and repatriation.

Recommended vaccinations and other health protection measures vary according to the country you are visiting and where you are travelling from. We recommend you contact your GP/medical practitioner or a travel clinic for current information on vaccinations needed for your destination. You should ensure that you are up to date with vaccines and boosters recommended for your normal life at home, including for example, vaccines required for occupational risk of exposure, lifestyle risks and underlying medical conditions. In addition, additional courses or boosters normally recommended for the countries in this region are:

Thailand : Additional vaccinations: Hepatitis A, Tetanus. Malaria map . Yellow Fever certificate: Required if arriving from or having transitted through an infected area. Vietnam : Additional vaccinations: Hepatitis A, Tetanus, Typhoid. Malaria map . Yellow Fever certificate: Required if arriving from an infected area. Cambodia : Additional vaccinations: Hepatitis A, Tetanus, Typhoid. Malaria map . Yellow Fever certificate: Required if arriving from or having transitted through an infected area. Laos : Additional vaccinations: Diptheria, Poliomyelitis, Hepatitis A, Tetanus, Typhoid. Malaria map . Yellow Fever certificate: Required if arriving from an infected area.

The above information can change at short notice. For up to date health information & vaccination requirements we recommend that you contact your medical practitioner or a travel clinic.

Malaria : Vaccinations are not available against Malaria, which is a disease transmitted by mosquitoes that can be very serious and sometimes fatal. You should avoid mosquito bites by covering up bare skin with clothing such as long sleeves and long trousers and applying insect repellents to exposed skin. When necessary, sleep under a mosquito net. Mosquitoes are most active during and after sunset. You should consult with your GP/medical practitioner/travel clinic about the most appropriate malaria prophylactic medication to take for the regions you are visiting.

Yellow Fever: This disease is spread by infected mosquitoes that bite during the day. A Yellow Fever Certificate of vacinnation may be required as a condition of entry depending on which country you are arriving from, or that you have travelled or transitted through recently (including connecting flights with stopovers of over 12 hours). You can view this US CDC information about where the virus is present and follow the links to further information detailing which countries need you to have a Yellow Fever vaccination as part of their entry requirements. Please ensure you have this certificate with you and to hand if necessary.

Please inform us of any pre-existing conditions such as diabetes or asthma and any prescription medicine you may be taking. We also need to know about any food allergies or physical disabilities that you may have.

Passports should be valid for at least six months after your departure from the country. Please do not bring an almost full or almost expired passport. Visa arrangements are the responsibility of the traveller, and requirements are subject to change by the local authorities.

Most foreign nationals (including UK, EU, USA, CA, AU, NZ, SA) are granted a visa exemption on arrival for stays in the country of up to 30 days. If you are looking to spend longer in Thailand then you will need to leave the country and re-enter to extend your stay. We strongly recommend arranging your visa in advance if you would like to stay longer than 30 days in Thailand.

15-day visas are available for most foreign nationals and cost US$30. These are available on arrival into Vientiane International airport or when crossing into Laos from Thailand, either at the friendship bridge land border or even when crossing over from northern Thailand into Huay Xai. Longer 30 day tourist visas and business visas can be arranged prior to departure either in your home country or by using an agency in one of the neighbouring countries although this will incur a fee. When leaving the country by air there is a US$10 departure tax payable at the airport.

As visa regulations often change we recommend that you check this information with your nearest consulate. Obtaining the correct visa is the responsibliity of the traveller.

Dress code The Thai people consider dressing appropriately to be important and respectful, so please follow their example. This means covering up your swimwear while not on the beach or by the pool, and while shorts and T-shirts are fine, please try not to look scruffy. Remember to take your shoes off before entering local houses or any religious buildings.

Temple etiquette When entering temples you should wear clothes that cover your knees and shoulders. Women may be asked to wear long skirts, not trousers, and shorts are not appropriate for either sex. You may wear a shawl to cover up and these are sometimes available to hire before entry. Again please take your shoes off before entering.

Buddhist Culture Thailand is a Buddhist country and Buddhism permeates nearly all aspects of society and culture, resulting in a country with different customs to much of the West. Rudeness and disrespect are frowned upon and you will be judged on your behaviour. Some tips for behaviour to avoid causing offence are; do not touch other people with your feet, point your feet at Buddhist statues or shrines (be careful of this when you sit), and don't touch the head of someone you don't know well. Public displays of affection are frowned upon, so save these until you are in private. You'll find being polite using a few Thai words will really pay dividends (thank you is Kawp Khun Kaa if you are female, and Kawp Khun Kraap if you are male. Your tour guide will provide more information and advice while you are on the tour; please don't hesitate to ask them any questions or for advice.

The Royal Family The Thai people have huge respect for their Royal Family and this is enshrined in many laws as well. You should bear this in mind when speaking to Thai people and in simple things like remembering that Thai paper money has the King's face on and should therefore be treated carefully.

Drugs and Alcohol Drugs are illegal in Thailand and heavy penalties including very large fines and jail time can be imposed. Don't think that because you are a tourist you are exempt or will be treated differently. Drinking is legal and you should not worry about having a few beers or cocktails while on tour. However remember to be respectful to your surroundings, fellow group members and the local population.

The currency Laos is the 'Kip' (LAK).

Common notes: 100 kip 500 kip 1,000 kip 2,000 kip 5,000 kip

It's worth noting that US$ are widely accepted throughout Laos and are often actually preferred for higher value purchases. Travellers arriving from Thailand will also find that the Thai baht is another currency welcomed in Laos. However, when paying in these currencies change will most likely be given in kip which should be kept for more day-to-day purchases and transactions. You can change money at any bank (08.30 & 16.00 Mon-Fri) although a variable commission will be charged. In general, it's a good idea to try and find the lower rates which are usually available through exchange kiosks or hotels. In the capital city Vientiane you can exchange UK£ pound, Euros, AUS$ and other currencies but in the smaller towns around the rest of the country, US$ and Thai baht are preferred.

Traveller's cheques are widely accepted in major cities and do benefit from a slightly better rate but this can be offset by the commission charged to change them.

ATM's have now made it into Laos and these are available in Vientiane, Luang Prabang and Viang Vieng. For some reason, Mastercard is sometimes preferred to Visa but a lot of debit cards such as Cirrus and Maestro are now accepted. You can also use credit cards to pay for hotels and some restaurants but credit and debit cards are far from being accepted everywhere so having an alternate way of accessing funds is vital.

Luggage limits: There is no luggage limit for this tour. However, most airlines restrict you to between 20kg and 25kg for your hold luggage and between 5kg and 10kg for hand luggage. Please check with your airline before travelling to the airport.

Climate and Clothing: There are three reasonably well-defined seasons in Thailand, but unlike in Europe, where seasons are temperature based, Thailand is tropical and generally speaking warm all year round. Rains from the monsoon are the marker of seasons and the rainy season is from June to October. Pre-monsoon is from March to May, when the weather becomes progressively hotter. Post monsoon is from November to February when the weather is cooler. The range of temperature is more marked in the north where pre-monsoon can be very hot, though the heat is much drier than in the south. Winter in the north can feel cool, particularly in the mountains. Take light clothes with something warmer for the winter nights if you are travelling to the north. Some light raingear would be useful in the wet season.

Other items: We recommend you also bring:

  • Cool footwear (sandals are ideal). If you are interested in exploring the reefs, a pair of reef shoes is recommended to avoid injuries. If you are trekking, then bring comfortable and sturdy walking shoes or light walking boots.
  • Swimming costumes – rash-guards/t-shirts are recommended for snorkelling to avoid sunburn.
  • Sunscreens, after sun lotions and personal hygiene products – Please adhere to 100ml restrictions for anything you wish to carry on hand-luggage on flights.
  • Prescription medications (if required) – please bring supporting documents.
  • Power adapter for phones, laptops etc
  • Sunglasses and hats
  • Basic first aid kit and toiletries
  • Small torch
  • Dive certification card and log book if you intend to participate in SCUBA diving.
  • Sleeping bag if your tour includes any hill-tribe or village trekking

This tour is designed as a sample tailor-made tour itinerary. As such we do not offer set group departure dates that you can join. Rather, the tour is available for you to do privately starting on any date of the year. Guideline seasonal prices are given below, based on 2 people travelling. If you would like to adjust the tour itinerary, or there will be more or less people travelling, please contact us and we will customise a price for you. For many people planning a trip to Laos, the weather will be a determining factor in choosing when to travel. The driest and coolest time to visit Laos is from November to February. You will experience days of cool breezes and low temperatures and miss the monsoon season (May to November). Certain provinces of Laos (Xieng Khuang, Hua Phan and Phongsali) will also get rain blowing in from Vietnam and China from February to May but this northeast monsoon usual bypasses the rest of Laos. This time of year is also Laos's main season for both national and regional bun (festivals) though December to February and August are the peak tourist times. January, in particular, is very busy and booking ahead is advisable. If you are interested in river travel you will best visit during November when the floods have subsided but the rivers are still filled to capacity. This type of travel can be difficult from January to June when water levels are low. Please speak with our reservations team who will be happy to help you in selecting an appropriate time for your tour.

It is impossible not to have an impact on the local environment, cultures and eco-systems when you travel. However, it is very possible to try and ensure that these impacts are as limited, or positive as possible. We are committed to ensuring that we try to leave our host countries in a better state than we found them and encourage and assist our travellers to help us with this. The following are a few simple tips that require very little effort on your part but which will help ensure that any effect you have on the locations you visit is positive rather than negative.

  • Don't prejudge: Things in different countries will almost certainly be different. That doesn't make them worse or inferior, just different.
  • Communicate: Don't expect locals to speak your language. Take the trouble to learn a few words or phrases of the local language. Don't worry about sounding silly. Most locals are patient and accommodating and appreciate you making the effort to communicate in their language.
  • Conserve energy: Be careful not to waste valuable resources. Use local resources sparingly. Switch off lights, air-conditioning and fans when you leave the hotel room and don't waste water. Remove superfluous packaging. Many countries have far less efficient waste disposal systems than ours. Remove packaging from newly acquired items before leaving home.
  • Don't litter: No matter how untidy or dirty the country you're travelling in may look to you, avoid littering, as there is no need to add to the environment's stress. Many of the countries we visit have a tough challenge dealing with rubbish and waste. Please consider taking home as much plastic waste as you can (e.g. water bottles).
  • Choose environmentally friendly products: By using environmentally friendly (bio degradable) sun creams, shampoos and detergents you can help reduce pollution.
  • Respect local customs and traditions: As you are a guest in these countries, you should also comply with the local customs. If you are friendly and well mannered, the locals will reciprocate and it will only enhance your experience. It's important to follow dress and behaviour guidelines especially when visiting religious or sacred sites (your tour leader will advise you how best to do this).
  • If a client commits an illegal act the client may be excluded from the tour and Encounters Travel shall cease to have responsibility to/for them. No refund will be given for any unused services.

All porters are employed and equipped following guidelines set by the International Porter Protection Group (IPPG).

You can stay in touch with us online by following us on Facebook and Twitter. It is important when considering and preparing to travel anywhere in the world that you have a good understanding of the country you are visiting, its laws and customs, and the possible risks and situations that may occur. This includes specific risks related to your itinerary (eg. does it involve water & can you swim, are you fit enough for the activities included), as well as more general risks such as terrorism and natural disasters.

General details and links to more information about health risks, visa requirements, money, and travel insurance are given in these tour notes. We recommend that you re-read all these before your departure as well as the small print of your travel insurance policy so you know exactly what is covered and what is not.

You should take copies of your important travel documents with you and ideally also store them online securely as a backup. Make sure that you have given us your emergency contact details and told that person where and when you are travelling. Ensure you take enough money with you and that you have access to emergency funds.

Finally, you should read through and stay updated with the current official government travel advice for your destination. We are registered partners with the UK Foreign Office's 'Travel Aware' campaign which provides further useful and invaluable information.

'Travel Aware' campaign

The tour price includes entrance fees to all the tourist sites mentioned in the itinerary. You will need to cover the cost of entrance to any other extra sites that you may wish to visit.

Our South East Asia tours all include a 24-hour arrival and departure airport-hotel transfer service, and all other transfers throughout the tour. If you are already in the country then we will provide you with your first hotel details, contact numbers for our local representatives, and details of your first meeting time.

Tipping is not part of culture in South East Asia in the same way that it is standard practice in other parts of the world. However it has become more customary but not compulsory in the tourist and service industry. USD 5-10 per person per day would be appropriate for your guide(s).

Cruising the Mekong River: A Journey of Scenic Beauty and Cultural Delights

Taking a cruise on the fascinating Mekong River offers a unique and memorable travel experience. The Mekong River, one of the longest rivers in Asia, flows through several countries, including China, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam. Each destination along the river offers its own distinct cultural, historical, and natural attractions. In this article, we will go over what you can expect when cruising the Mekong River.

Xe Champhone Loop - the hidden beauty of central Laos

Despite being open to tourism for the past two decades, Laos remains a destination brimming with hidden treasures and unexplored gems, awaiting the arrival of curious adventurers.

Among these remarkable places is the Xe Champhone Loop, an enchanting location that captures the essence of Laos.

In early September 2022, we had the privilege of embarking on an Educational Tour organized by the esteemed Tetraktys Organization. Our objective was to delve into the wonders of this loop and promote its allure to international tourists.

During our expedition, we were awe-struck by the captivating sights and valuable insights we gained. The area boasts an abundance of captivating natural landscapes, rich traditional culture, and warm-hearted hosts.

We have compiled comprehensive information about this captivating region below.

Stay connected to discover more about this hidden gem!

All aboard! High-speed train offers compelling new way to travel through Laos

The romance of train travel is alive and well in Laos. The recently-completed high-speed railway that stretches from Vientiane, through Laos, and into southern China is operating ‘full steam’ ahead.

Luang Prabang Holds First Boat Racing Festival After Years of Covid-19

Luang Prabang will celebrate the boat racing festival (Boun Souang Heua) in Namkhan River during Buddhist Lent Period, on August 26th, 2022.

A notice issued by Luang Prabang provincial office says that Luang Prabang will arrange Boun Hor Khaopadapdin, an annual festival held to feed spirits with home-made parcels of food, and the boat racing activities along Namkhan River.

The province intends to promote the traditional festival and practices in hopes of attracting more domestic and foreign tourists, generating revenue for locals.

Traditional racing boats are made of a single tree and can accommodate up to fifty rowers.

The boats are considered sacred, are cleaned, and are given offerings which are believed to bring victory to the team.

In the downtown heart of Luang Prabang, there will also be gatherings and markets.

The festival will be held on August 26th, 2022, the same day with Boun Khao Padapdine.

Covid-19 put a stop to traditional customs and festivals for almost three years, but now that the measurements have been relaxed, tourist destinations in Laos expect to recommence festivities and offer hope for travelers.

How long to spend in Laos may seem like a ridiculous question to address, but if you have plenty of time and aren’t sure how much to dedicate, this blog will definitely help you out.

How long can you stay in Laos?

Well, as long as you like! From 7 days to a month, there are various ways you can travel across Laos and uncover its secrets. Advising an ideal trip length for Laos is a bit of a complex challenge, as it depends on several factors such as the places you wish to visit, the activities you plan to join, or if you want to combine Laos with its neighbor countries.

Stay tuned! We are going to sort all these things out including the step-by-step guide to create the best itinerary in Laos.

Boun Bang Fai - Rocket Festival in Thailand and Laos

The Rocket Festival (Boun Bang Fai) is a merit-making ceremony traditionally practiced by ethnic Lao people near the beginning of the wet season in numerous villages and municipalities, in the regions of Northeastern Thailand and Laos. Celebrations typically include preliminary music and dance performances, competitive processions of floats, dancers and musicians on the second day, and culminating on the third day in competitive firings of home-made rockets. Local participants and sponsors use the occasion to enhance their social prestige, as is customary in traditional Buddhist folk festivals throughout Southeast Asia.

The festival in Thailand also includes special programs and specific local patterns like Bung Fai (Parade dance) and a Beautiful Bung Fai float such as Yasothon the third weekend of May, and continues Suwannaphum District, Roi Et on the first weekend of June, Phanom Phrai District Roi Et during the full moon of the seventh month in Lunar year's calendar each year. The Bung Fai festival is not only found in Isan or Northeasthern Thailand and North Thailand and Laos, but also in Amphoe Sukhirin, Narathiwat.

An icon just outside the city, Kuang Si Waterfalls are stunning and SO worth seeing it in person (the water really is that blue!). If you are fairly confident and comfortable on a motorbike, you could rent one and get there on your own. Minivans and Tuk-Tuks are also available to take you there. From the entrance, it is a small hike up to the waterfalls that will take you past rescued black bears hanging out at the sanctuary. It will only be a few minutes before you start hearing the water. The area is packed with tourists for most of the day, so consider going early in the morning and try to be the first person in if you want to avoid the crowds. To get a panoramic view of the waterfalls from high up, continue your hike to the (not so) secret waterfalls.

The Bolaven Plateau is known for its cooler temperature being located high above the Mekong Valley and famous for its sprawling coffee plantations and many waterfalls. Explore the delights of this area, accompanied by a knowledgeable coffee guide, by vintage jeep. The tour starts with a visit to several villages on the plateau and a break at the secluded Tad Moan waterfall, which offers the perfect place to relax and swim. After exploring the wonders of the plateau, head to the Mystic Mountain coffee plantation to witness and learn about the coffee roasting process. You will have time to explore the plantation’s verdant surrounds while your hosts prepare a delicious home-cooked lunch. For those wishing to delve deeper into the process of coffee production, there is the option of a homestay to learn some of the techniques of the trade from the owner of the plantation and further explore the area.

If you thought you didn’t need to pack a coat for Laos, think again. At an altitude of 1,626m, mountainous Phongsali gets cold, but it’s worth bracing it for the splendid panoramic views. The cloud-cladded mountains and a vast, verdant jungle are just some of the reasons this region is Laos’ go-to trekking spot. Trekking tours include hikes up mountains with forest views, staying with the unique Akha Puxo people and descending into a valley to see rice paddies sprawl out around you. Due to China’s influence on Phongsali, the architecture is fascinating, with buildings fluctuating between industrial Chinese concrete blocks to tin-roofed houses and mud huts. To feel like you’ve travelled to China, visit the Yunnanese shophouses and the Chinese temple. For a history of Phongsali, head to the Museum of Tribes to find information, photos and colourful costumes.

If spending your nights sleeping in sky-high treehouses alongside gibbons, and days ziplining from tree to tree is your idea of jungle heaven, then you’re in luck. In Huay Xai, near the border with Thailand is the Gibbon Experience. Based deep in the Bokeo Nature Reserve, the experience offers visitors the chance to spend three nights in the treehouses. Spend your mornings with the guides gibbon-spotting, seeing other wildlife such as giant squirrels and Asiatic black bears. Or you can choose a three-day option, trekking for around three hours each day along the Nam Nga River passing a fresh water swimming pool and a waterfall. One of the treehouses you’ll bunk down in overnight offers stunning sunsets across the valley. The Gibbon Experience invests much time in reforestation programs, looking after old trees as well as planting a diverse range of new ones. They also work with the government to employ park patrollers who guard against illegal logging, hunting and fishing. It’s been such a huge conservation success story that a new national park has been created within the reserve. At 136,000 hectares, the Nam Kan National Park is home to the most pristine forest in all of Laos, an abundance of wildlife and Laos’ biggest tree.

One of the best visual perspectives of the natural landscape in Laos is from the Viewpoint at Nong Khiaw in the northern part of the country. If you are up for the 1.5-hour trek to the top of the mountain from the tiny village of Nong Khiaw, you will see a panoramic view of the flowing Nam Ou River. Also visible is an iconic view of tiny Laos villages surrounded by the mountains. Since this is a natural setting, plan your round-trips wisely to the top as you will be hiking through forest, and you will need a flashlight once the sun sets. There is also nowhere to buy water along the hike, so plan ahead with proper hydration and sturdy shoes. If you would rather enjoy the view from below, boat trips are available along the river.

Plain of Jars’ thousands of mysterious megalithic jars are scattered throughout Xiang Khuang Province in northeastern Laos. Dating from the iron age, the oldest jars go back to 500 BC.

The largest “King Jar” is at Site 1 and the longest jar is at Site 2. It’s possible to hire a guide to take you on a trek from Site 2, which is behind a rice paddy to Site 3, which is in the forest on top of a hill. The leading theory suggests these stone vessels were used in burial rituals. Evidence suggests that bodies were distilled in the jars until only bones remained. The bones were then removed and interred in a ceramic jar or in the ground.

Nine of the 90 sites containing jars have been cleared of UXOs, so stick to the established routes and bring a guide out trekking with you.

The northern town of Luang Nam Tha is close to the Chinese border and the perfect gateway to hike through pristine rainforest and meet Laos’ hill tribe communities in the protected Nam Ha Reserve. Several local tour operators, including well-known Green Discovery Laos, organize eco-friendly and culturally sensitive treks into the reserve. An overnight trip is not enough time to get deep into the jungle and to truly experience the local ways of life. Be sure to allow for a longer visit if you are interested in staying with the villagers, who often double as guides for trekking in the reserve, and offer community-based tourism in the form of homestays.

Every traveler should try one of Laos’ simplest but tastiest foods, khao piak sen. This savory tapioca noodle soup served in chicken broth is sold at every restaurant, stall, and bus station, and served in every home across the country. Be sure to make use of the fresh herbs, soy sauce, and bean sprouts that every seller will add on your table next to your steaming bowl. But be cautious with the chilies, as they really burn. A popular place to eat khao piak sen in Vientiane is the Phim Phone Noodle shop in Dongpalane Road, just south of the Morning Market.

Laos’ namesake beer is as popular and widespread as water. In fact, sometimes it is easier to find than bottled water as you really can find it anywhere …including in the middle of nowhere. Look for it at remote street stalls catering to locals and in the packed touristy bars of Vang Vieng and Luang Prabang. Beer Lao is a smooth, savory, and light brew, and it goes down well with any meal. It is somewhat of a national obsession, so feel free to sample it at every opportunity.

The twin waterfall of Tad Fane in the Bolaven Plateau is breathtaking enough when approached on foot, and even more so when experienced from a zipline perched at more than 320 feet high with a bird’s eye view of the falls and surrounding valleys. Ziplining above Tad Fane costs $50 per person, and tickets can be purchased on-site or in advance from tour operators like Miss Noy in Pakse, which also offers reliable automatic scooter rental from $5 a day.

Laos’ main cities are filled with a plethora of international dining choices and fine cuisine, but to truly enjoy the zesty flavors of Lao cooking, it’s best to hit the street and eat like a local. From tapioca noodle soups to barbecued meats and sticky rice wrapped in banana leaves, Laotians are masters of street food. You are in for a culinary treat.

Have you ever been to Pakse if you haven’t taken the time to climb the staircase to the top of Wat Phou Salao?  Doubtful. A moderate half-hour climb brings you next to the giant golden Buddha that sits at this vantage point. From here, you can look out over the town and the junction between the Mekong and Sedone rivers.

Located in Sayabouly (3 hours by road from Luang Prabang) the center is staffed with an international team of elephant vets and offers free veterinary care services, an emergency unit, a breeding center, a mahout vocational center and the most extensive elephant information center in country.

The Elephant Conservation Center is not just another elephant camp. It provides a global approach to the resolution of various problems striking the last elephants of Laos. Through a dedicated team of international conservationists and vets, programmes are implemented on site and beyond. ElefantAsia, an internationally recognised organisation, runs Laos’ elephant conservation programme from the facility. A true private-public partnership, the Elephant Conservation Center cooperates with multiple conservation organisations around the world.

The Kamu Lodge is a beautiful eco-lodge in a remote location on the banks of the majestic Mekong River in northern Laos. Access to the lodge is by a private boat - a two and a half-hour ride upstream through glorious scenery from Luang Prabang.

Accommodation is in luxury safari tents, mounted on semi-permanent bamboo platforms with thatched covered roofs. All are fitted with solar-powered electricity and hot water. Beds are comfy, and the rooms are well located, with private balconies surrounded by forest and the river banks.

Several excellent excursions are included in the price. In-house activities include rice farming, fishing, gold panning, Laos archery and tours of the local village. More adventurous excursions include treks to caves and waterfalls and tribal communities. The staff will also teach you how to find medicinal plants in the forest if you are interested.

The lodge is built next to a small Kamu village with close and harmonious ties between the two. The lodge is run in a sensitive and eco-friendly way, protecting and enriching the village people. The area around the lodge is spectacularly pretty, with lush paddy fields, a dramatic mountainous backdrop and the mighty river below.

The lodge would suit anyone interested in getting a flavour of life in rural Laos or a voyage on the mighty Mekong River. It is a very peaceful place, ideal for relaxing and taking it easy. Food is served where you choose, either on your balcony or in the riverside restaurant. All meals and soft drinks are included in the price made with organic ingredients. Staff are vital to the success of the lodge. Sourced from local villages, they inject their warm and friendly personalities to give a very welcoming and engaging atmosphere to the entire project.

Kamu Lodge can also be visited as an extra night stop on the Luang Say cruise following the initial night stop in Pak Beng.

Departures:

Laos is a country infused with a sense of serenity, and the whole pace of life is so much slower than even other countries in Southeast Asia. Lazy, winding rivers thread their way through jungle-covered mountain scenery and a sometimes dreamy haze pervades the Lao atmosphere.

The former royal capital of Luang Prabang is often voted the ‘best tourist destination in the world’ for its combination of laid-back charms, relaxed air and unique architectural legacy. Built at the confluence of the Nam Khan and Mekong Rivers, in a delightful mountain-encircled setting, the city is UNESCO-designated as a World Heritage Site. The Royal Palace, numerous gilded temples and the beguiling night market are the main highlights. Cosmopolitan Vientiane, the modern-day capital of Laos, is larger than Luang Prabang but its elegant tree-lined avenues, brightly painted temples, fine French colonial architecture and river front promenade mean that it also possesses considerable charm.

Outside of the main towns and cities, Laos also boasts notable historical sites such as the mysterious Plain of Jars, the impressive Khmer temple of Wat Phu at Champasak, and the pilgrimage caves at Pak Ou boasting over 2,000 statues of the Buddha.

In addition to its outstanding historic sites, Laos’s northern hill villages, centred on Muang Sing and Luang Namtha , reveal a surprising ethnic diversity with small villages home to tribal groups with rich cultural traditions and brightly-coloured dress. The surrounding landscape of rugged mountains, pristine forests and rich river plains shelter, not only the villages, but also an impressive variety of wildlife including rare clouded leopards, pangolins, Asian elephants, bears and wild boars.

Our Gentle Walking Laos holiday visits colonial cities, natural splendours and hill villages via easy-paced day walks.

When is the best time to travel to Laos?

laos trekking tour

Laos' weather pattern is quite straight forward, with a dry season between October and April, and a wet season May to September. The best time to visit Laos is between November and February. The temperatures tend to climb from February, reaching a high in April. Our climate charts will give you a guide to the weather conditions in Laos. The monsoon rains are heavy, though can be short lived. Road travel can be problematic during the rainy season. Rivers are best navigated in November after the flooding has subsided but water levels are still high. If you can't make the dates of our group departures, then take a private departure on dates to suit you, or we can create a Tailor Made holiday to Laos, especially for you and your family or friends.

Tiger Trail - We are Laos

Trekking in Laos - Hiking in Laos - Adventure travel and tours in Laos

Trekking and hiking in laos discover the welcoming people and diverse culture of laos..

We invite you to discover the diversity of trekking tours in Laos with Tiger Trail Travel. We are the the pioneers in eco adventure travel and community based tourism in Luang Prabang, Laos. Our company has been established in 2000 and has since then grown to be the most innovative leader in social entrepreneurship in our community. We run our own treks with a well trained group of specialist tour guides. And with a full time staff of over 60 people we can host almost any request you may have. Our in depth experience and team of professionals will help you find a unique trekking experience in northern Laos.

Trekking and hiking is still the best way to explore Laos its ethnic diversity. Trekking indeed is the best way to meet people, to see their rural lives and experience how the Laotian people manage their day to day life. Most places in Laos are far away from modern civilization. It means you also travel back in time! If you join our trekking tours you will need to reduce your needs and turn on your expectations. But please do not expect crowded touristy village trails and European living standards... We will provide you only a true adventure.

We offer several treks and tour combinations that bring you into great places and remote areas of Laos. Our Trekking Tours around Luang Prabang and the northern provinces can be as long as 4-5 days depending on the region. We operate Trekking tours in Nong Khiaw, Phongsali, Luang Namtha and Luang Prabang. Phongsali region is the most remote and therefore for the real adventurous ones. Normal day treks would still give a good impression about the life in the countryside of Laos and are mostly operated in Luang Prabang province. Enjoy a day hike or spend a few days trekking in Laos on one of our wilderness treks. Discover mystical waterfalls and hidden caves, jungle trails and rugged mountains. Meet locals and stay with them. Bring your boots and a spirit of adventure - we supply the rest...

On our specialized Trekking trips we visit local villages, stay in their homes, listen to their stories and see how life is going on. We normally visit Khmu people, Hmong villages and other ethnic groups depending on the region you go for your trekking. This Lao hiking experience is combined with some great sceneries and impressive mountains that surround the trails as most m`inorities live in remote mountain areas of northern Laos. Custom made treks and tours of any length can be designed upon request. We plan expeditions in conjunction with boat rides, rafting or biking. Multi-day treks into new areas can be arranged and will than be guided with a special team and supporting staff and GPS support. Please note: Changes can occur due to weather and other unforeseen conditions on any trek at any time.

What people love about Laos Tours

Absolutely loved Laos although would have liked to have spent more time in Luang Prabang. Our first guide was fantastic and so incredibly knowledgeable. For three star accommodation I could not fault it. Unless you particularly want to see the countryside, I would highly recommend to fly like my friends did to Vientiane, as the itinerary lied. The trip was not the 8 hours like stated, rather closer to 12 hours. There were limited English speaking people and the communication was limited therefore I was unsure what was going on at times regarding the arrival time to Vientiane. Furthermore it was not explained what our food voucher was for and there were not toilet break between the 2pm lunch break and the arrival time in Vientiane over 5 hours later. Don't be deceived either by the 'Deluxe' bus as it is 'Deluxe' 3rd world style. No biggie however had the most amazing hotel on the Mekong River, overlooking Thailand however the internet was non existent unless you were in the reception or restaurant. Compared to the communication from Hoi An Express during my Vietnam tour, I found the communication in Laos was very limited. There was no communication regarding my transfer between cities and it was something I was required to chase up myself.
The guides were both excellent, very engaging, caring and very knowledgeable; the organization was in some respects a bit confused, in one case regarding how a local payment was to be made and in another instance there was a request for some official Lao document of which I had no awareness. Overall, however, the experience was excellent. Thank you
Excellent tour of Laos. The organisation by Realistic Asia was very good and visits and activities well planned. We paid a supplement for better hotels and were very happy with the high standard. I would certainly use this company again.

Hoi An Express

"I have nothing but accolades for the services of TourRadar with all email questions answered promptly and with the complete information seeked. The tour of Laos and Cambodia was organised locally through Hoi An Express and I have nothing but accolades for their service which was excellent, impressive local guides and driver at each location. The hotel locations were centrally and conveniently located, very clean, friendly helpful staff and all amenities as expected. I had not heard of TourRadar before 'surfing' the internet and finding this trip - I know now, that for future trips, I will most certainly look through trips that Tour Radar has to offer and will also be advising all my single girlfriends to do so also.

"We were very pleased by our overall experience. Our tour guides and drivers were wonderful - very knowledgeable, professional and polite. The sites included in the itinerary were worthwhile and we felt we saw as much as possible with the amount of time allotted. The hotels were great. I would definitely recommend Tourradar to my friends and family.

Day 01 : Luang Prabang to Nong Khiaw with Lao Leu Village and Patok Cave Visit (L,D)

Meet your guide in Luang Prabang and enjoy a scenic 3-hour drive winding along the Nam Ou River to the small town of Nong Khiaw. Along the way we’ll stop for a visit at Ban Na Nyang, a Lao Leu village known for its unusual Lao Leu traditional style houses and handicrafts.

Arrive in Nong Khiaw in the afternoon and have time to explore the small town, visit the easily accessible Patok Cave that was used as a head quarters by the Pathet Lao communist command during the War as well as a shelter for villagers during American bombing runs, and have some local food with your guide.

You’ll overnight in a guest house near the Nam Ou River surrounded by jungle-covered mountains .

Day 02 : Kayaking the Nam Ou River, 100 Waterfall Trek, and Riverside Homestay (B,L,D)

Grab your gear and get ready as we set out on a full day of active adventure. We’ll kayak down the Nam Ou River (about 14 Km) to a riverside Khmu village where we'll find the trailhead of the famous 100 Waterfall trek, discovered by Tiger Trail. This is an exciting hike up through hundreds of cascading waterfalls surrounded by beautiful jungle. You’ll want to bring shoes that can get wet as we hike up and through the waterfall itself. Enjoy lunch at the waterfall and return mid-afternoon.

Upon returning to the river, we’ll board a local boat to transfer 7 Km downriver. Overnight at a beautiful riverside Khmu village and experience traditional Laotian hill tribe life surrounded by beautiful mountains and nature .

Day 03 : Kayak Nam Our River and Return Drive to Luang Prabang (B,L)

Wake to breakfast prepared by your guide then set out in the morning hours for our final day of easy kayaking about 16 km down a beautiful stretch of the Nam Ou River. Take lunch on the riverbanks.

Finish kayaking to meet our truck for return transfer to Luang Prabang.
