King Buzzo, a.k.a. Buzz Osborne, is the singer, guitar player and founder of the enormously influential band, the Melvins. His innovative approach to songwriting, and guitar playing, has influenced countless musicians, and turned leagues of music lovers into ardent fans. Renowned for his pioneering use of down-tuned strings, Buzzo masterfully blended his punk and metal influences, and in turn, he created a groundbreaking new sound in heavy music. Over Osborne’s extensive career, which originated in the small hamlet of Montesano, Wash. in 1983, he has released over 30 albums under the Melvins’ moniker, two solo albums [Gift of Sacrifice (2020) and This Machine Kills Artists (2014)], as well as a number of collaborative projects including Fantômas and Crystal Fairy.

Trevor Dunn might be most widely known for his work with Mr. Bungle, the eclectic and unpredictable Northern California band he co-founded in 1985, but his career outside of Mr. Bungle has been just as notable. Also a member of Fantômas, Trevor Dunn’s Trio-Convulsant, Tomahawk and Melvins Lite, Dunn has also written music for various ensembles, performed extensively with John Zorn, and recently formed Riverworm Records , a label home for “discarded, forgotten, and misunderstood music.”

TARANTULA HEART - New Album announced for release April 19th, 2024

The Melvins latest opus, Tarantula Heart (April 19, Ipecac Recordings), is quite possibly the band’s most unconventional, catchiest and imaginative work yet, continuing a legacy celebrated for its eccentric and extraordinary output.

A preview of the five-song, 39-minute collection arrives with the release of “ Working The Ditch ,” and the accompanying Jesse Nieminen-created video . Nieminen previously directed the band’s short film, “A Walk With Love and Death.”

“The way we approached Tarantula Heart was different than any other Melvins’ album,” explains Buzz Osborne. “I had Dale and Roy Mayorga come in and play along with Steven and I to some riffs, then I took those sessions and figured out what parts would work and wrote new music to fit. This isn’t a studio approach we’ve ever taken. Usually we have the songs written BEFORE we start recording!”

“The majority of Tarantula Heart has dual drum parts,” adds long-time Melvins drummer Dale Crover. “Roy is an amazing drummer. We would discuss what we would do pattern wise, then we’d just go for it. Improvising riffs and trading off on drum fills.”

In actuality nothing appeared out of thin air. Buzz spent hours and hours with the drum tracks by himself writing songs to what he was hearing drum wise. “When the rest of the band heard these songs I’d created from the sessions, they were blown away,” Buzz shares. “These were fully developed new songs that they’d never heard before that had seemingly appeared out of thin air. Presto!”

Recorded, mixed and co-produced by longtime Melvins’ collaborator Toshi Kasai, the album also features We Are The Asteroid guitar player Gary Chester. Gary and the Melvins’ history goes back to their days on Boner Records, with the guitar player formerly having been a part of the legendary band, Ed Hall.

Tarantula Heart pre-orders are available now , with the album available on a trio of vinyl variants (black, indie exclusive Silver Streak and Ipecac Recordings’ 25th Anniversary Puke Green), featuring a 12-page booklet, as well as on CD and digitally.

Next month sees the Melvins head overseas, playing in Japan for the first time since 2019 following a stint where they join current labelmates, Mr. Bungle, for a trek across Australia and New Zealand. Buzz and Bungle bass player Trevor Dunn team up later this year for the “King Dunn Tour,” a 45-date excursion that sees the pair play songs from the King Buzzo releases: This Machine Kills Artists and Gift of Sacrifice. Matt Cameron announces Gory Scorch Cretins collaboration with Melvins

Matt Cameron (Pearl Jam/Soundgarden, etc) recorded a 5-song vinyl exclusive with Buzz, Dale, Steven and Toshi for Record Store Day – get it this Friday after Thanksgiving at your favorite local record store! More details at Revolver .

Matt says: "I have always been a massive Melvins fan. They are a huge influence on me as a musician and a big part of our early Seattle music scene. I reconnected with the Melvins in 2019 when they performed at the Chris Cornell tribute concert in LA. I emailed Buzz after and asked if he, Dale, Steven and Toshi could help record some songs I had written and they were totally up for it. I also collaborated with Nate Yaccino and Meagan Grandall on this project. I decided to pay tribute to the Melvins by reimagining the artwork/title for their seminal release Gluey Porch Treatments. Enjoy! "

Melvins announce Twins of Evil Tour coheadlining the U.S. with BORIS

Today the Melvins announced the “Twins of Evil Tour,” a seven-week trek that sees them co-headlining with Japanese trio Boris , both performing classic albums in their entirety: Bullhead (Melvins) and Heavy Rocks (Boris).

“40 years as the Melvins!!! What better way to celebrate that unlikely milestone than by setting off on the ‘Twins of Evil Tour’ with our friends, Boris," says King Buzzo. "This will be a stone groove!” Boris’ Takeshi adds: “Could anyone have predicted such an astonishing event, that Boris and the Melvins would tour the entire USA together? Since the mid-1980s, the Melvins have had an enormous influence on artists of all genres not only limited to heavy music, and have brought forth a surge of faithful followers over the years. Needless to say, Boris is just one of these many bands influenced by the mighty Melvins, and we took our name from a song title off of the 1991 album, Bullhead.”

American alternative metal/hardcore punk band, Melvins, originally formed in Montesano, Washington, and currently consists of Buzz Osborne, Dale Crover, Jared Warren and Coady Willis.

Formed in 1983 by high school mates, Buzz Osborne (guitar/vocals), Matt Lukin (bass), and Mike Dillard (drums). They started off playing cover songs of Jimi Hendrix and Cream, and experimenting with hardcore punk music. Dillard decided to move on, who was soon replaced by Dale Crover. In 1985 C/Z Records was created and released their first album that featured four songs, and then in 1986 the band released their own debut EP, followed by their full-length album “Gluey Porch Treatments” in 1987.

In 1990 the band recorded and released “Bullhead” followed by a tour of Europe. In 1993 they were signed by Atlantic Records, releasing their first major label album “Houdini;” however, they were dropped three albums later. The band then signed with Amphetamine Reptile Records, and released their next album “Honky” in the same year (1997). The years to follow found the band re-mastering old songs, returning to old sounds, and in 2003 Atlantic Records (UK) released a compilation track of their top hits when the band was signed with Atlantic.

In Fall 2006 the band set out on tour to promote their newest album “(A) Senile Animal” and in July 2008 released “Nude With Boots.” After a series of tours and a few more albums, the band also had a side project called Melvins Lite consisting of Dunn, Dale and Buzz). Melvins Lite went on a record breaking tour in 2012, performing every night for 51 days. On 14 July 2014 the band announced their newest album “Hold It In.”

Live reviews

When someone mentions the grunge genre attention is immediately turned to Nirvana, Mudhoney, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, etc… but often time people forget one of the true pioneers of the genre, The Melvins.

While they’re not strictly a grunge band, they share many elements of the genre along with aspects of metal, alternative, punk and hardcore. The sludgy rock band has been together for nearly 30 years and are still performing live and putting on great shows as well.

Buzz Osbourne, the lead guitarist, vocalist, and all around interesting guy is one of the most unique front man in rock ‘n roll. Even if you’re not familiar with his music, you more than likely know him by his Side Show Bob hairstyle.

While the band isn’t as hard around the edges as they used to be, the more senior members are all near 50 years old at this point, they’re still able to pull off a crunching live set. Most of their shows these days tend to flip between electric and acoustic elements. It’s a nice change of pace and you get to hear re-worked versions of some classic songs like “Shevil,” “Eyes Fly,” and “Inner Ear Rupture” amongst others.

The Melvins aren’t as nasty as they used to be, but they’re every bit as exciting still.

Report as inappropriate

There is a large debate when discussing the Melvins, what is bigger? The blistering metal guitar riffs or lead singer Buzz Osbourne's hair. The group's music has been described as a variety of things over the years including sludge metal, doom metal, stoner rock, drone metal and grunge. With labels like this attached you have some sort of understanding of the tone the band achieves when performing live. It is a somber, dark affair with the band filing onto stage in a manner similar to a funeral procession.

Through the gloom comes thumping drums, piercing percussion and that synonymous vocal of Buzz that is unlike many of his contemporaries. The group that formed over three decades ago is intent on showcasing two of its most critically acclaimed albums this evening 'Stoner Witch' and 'Bullhead'. These are performed in a two set mentality and the crowds are delighting in this solid choice, a clear winner with the early fans. The music is played in a reimagined order yet sounds equally good. It is clear as to why Melvins have had such a detrimental influence on the Seattle grunge from where they were formed.

The music was outstanding. Of course, the Melvins put on a great show with every single note hitting like a truck, both volume and delivery-wise. Maybe one of the best parts about their bass heavy sound might be the fact that they can get a lot louder than most bands without leaving your ears ringing for the next few days; it's the mid-range that's dangerous to hearing. Their opener, Helms Alee, was wonderful as well. That may have been the first time I was genuinely enamoured by an opening set. Their sound was somewhat psychedelic and definitely heavy, which led into the Melvins quite well. They joined the Melvins on stage for a fantastic finale: two basses, two guitars, and two drums. The only thing that I couldn't stand about the show was the crowd. The mosh pit was far too wide, was more slippery than an ice rink, and was filled with only 200+lb guys. I love mashing, but I also love being alive. There were also some older guys who were drugged out and trying to start fights, but the security couldn't even calm them down. That was all annoying, but the band's more than made up for it.

The Melvins concert in Dallas, Texas at Trees was one concert I will never forget. The concert venue was small creating an intimate setting which makes for great sound and acoustics. The Melvins are a group which do not talk much on stage, but make up for it sure power and energy (who wants to hear a bunch of talking right?). They came out and rocked the house for what seemed almost three hours. Just the sheer appearance of King Buzzo drove the crowd mad! The mosh pit was circling being driven by the sheer sludge sounds of the band.I was totally blown away by the bands energy and tone. The Melvins totally melted our faces off, and blew us away. Consider me a fan for life!

First time in Paradiso Tolhuistuin and must say was pleasently surprised. Great sound and good views made the Melvins experience once again one to remember. Buzz, Steven and Dale did their thing which they have done so many times but with an energy like you rarely see anymore.

It must also be awesome to be in a band that has created a huge and diverse repertoire, to draw from to make any live event something unique.

The crowd sucked it up, eventhough they were perhaps secretly hoping for more of the old classics.

I can recommend anyone to go and check out the Melvins live, you will be blasted away with a great mix of heavyness.

I’ve been going to see Melvins since 1991 and after last night’s show, I can say that they have never rocked harder. The set contained classics from Ozma, Bullhead, Houdini and Stoner Witch. There was also a sprinkling of new and less known stuff as well. Redd Kross was amazing and totally high energy. The collaboration between the two bands and the crossover of members was so cool. All the members of both could interchange easily... except Buzz of course, he has one home. The only bummer was that Shitkid didn’t play. I was really looking forward to seeing her.

Roddsurly’s profile image

What’s to say? Redd Kross and Melvins that’s all anyone needs to know. They both played power hour sets. Steven and Dale definitely earned their money pulling double duty for both sets. I’d seen something I never have before. The headlining band play a cover of the opening band while opening band member played with headliner!!! WTF!!! Then to see both bans merge for two songs at the end was pretty rad. The Grog Shop once again proved to be the place to see live music in Cleveland. I love the venue and the staff is awesome.

Obijuan’s profile image

Sandwiched between Eye Flies and Night Goat was an hour-long sandwich of throwaway material. Usually, Melvins are okay, but last night was pretty disappointing. ...which is fine, shit happens, but these guys used to be a force to be reckoned with. Now it seems they've acquiesced to more or less phoning it in with mishmash of hard rock songs, minus the time changes and the dynamics that once made them so great. It is was like witnessing a poorly executed Melvins cover band.

jeaide’s profile image

Amazing show! So tightly, musically woven are these guys! Every note and beat was in perfect harmony! My neck hurts from it bopping all night! It was a show I want to hear over and over again! I hope they record and release the set we heard on Valentine’s Night! The acoustics at the Mystic made it even more magical, as I have seen the Melvin’s at different venues, but this night was awesome! Honey to my ears!

THE MELVINS are one of modern music's most influential bands. Having formed in 1983 Montesano, Washington, the group founded by Osborne (with stalwart drummer Dale Crover joining the following year),has been credited with merging the worlds of punk rock and heavy music, forming a new subgenre all its own. Over the band's nearly 40-year history, they've released over 30 original albums, numerous live full-lengths and far too many to count singles and rarities. In the course of their discography, they've partnered with Jello Biafra , MUDHONEY and FANTÔMAS for individual releases and toured the world many times over. In fact, the band had the misfortune to be in both Christchurch and Tokyo for their 2011 earthquakes. In 2012, THE MELVINS completed the "51 States In 51 Days" (50 states +DC) tour, which was chronicled in the film "Across The USA in 51 Days" . The current incarnation of the band is Osborne , Crover and Steven McDonald ( REDD KROSS / OFF! ). Previous lineups include a pairing of Osborne and Crover with BIG BUSINESS bandmembers Jared Warren and Coady Willis , a four-piece featuring the current trio plus BUTTHOLE SURFERS ' Jeff Pinkus , as well as MELVINS LITE , which partners Osborne and Crover with MR. BUNGLE 's Trevor Dunn . Sometimes, if you're extra lucky, one version of THE MELVINS will open for THE MELVINS .

MR. BUNGLE announce 2023 U.S. tour with MELVINS

Mr. Bungle 2023 press 1600x900, Buzz Osborne

Mr. Bungle have announced their first set of tour dates in three years. The band led by the inimitable Mike Patton — who returned to the stage late last year after canceling a slew of 2021 tour dates for "mental health reasons" — will be playing a handful of U.S. shows later this spring with the sludge-grunge pioneers, the Melvins , and post-metal band Spotlights (featuring Revolver' s own Chris Enriquez).

The bill is actually a resurrection of the Geek Show tour, a package put together by Ipecac Recordings in the early 2000s that exclusively featured bands from that label. This iteration of the tour will feature seven dates, all taking place on the West Coast of the U.S.

"The Geek Show tours of the past were some of the best live show experiences I've ever had," Patton said in a press release. "Hanging out with friends that are also some of my favorite musicians is a great way to spend a couple weeks. This iteration is a mindblower. You will want to be the first one there and the last to leave this party! The mighty Melvins and Spotlights will prove to be a challenge for Mr. Bungle to follow. I only wish we could take this package around the globe."

Unwound plays New Plastic Ideas—30th Anniversary

Revolution hall.

Released in 1994 by the venerable Kill Rock Stars label, Unwound's sophomore album was a lethal depth charge aimed at major label grunge and DIY post-hardcore alike. In October, the band will take the stage in Portland, Seattle, and Vancouver to administer the complete nine-song, 40-minute dosage, with special period-appropriate openers, guests, and limited edition merch and records.   Born in  1991  in the Pacific Northwest as the Riot Grrrl and grunge musico-social movements took hold of underground pop culture,  Unwound  leveled their small corner of the '90s punk scene with a scathing  Future of What  barrage in the brightest corners of the underground. One of the flagship bands of the  Kill Rock Stars  label, the band also released material on iconic labels such as  Gravity ,  Troubleman   Unlimited , and  Matador  over their initial 10 year run. A notoriously relentless touring act, Unwound temporarily ended their endless adventure on  April 1st 2002  after a tumultuous year of societal and personal breakdowns and breakups.

In  2012 , Unwound began an aggressive reissue campaign with  The Numero Group , introducing the band's extensive catalog to a new generation of listeners. "It's been an amazing affirmation; hearing from people somewhat regularly saying they've just discovered our music, how meaningful it is to them," said drummer  Sara Lund . While the new attention on the band inspired the members to consider a reunion, it never happened- however the idea didn't disappear altogether. Still, after the devastating death of bass player  Vern Rumsey  in 2020 and as the world halted under the Covid pandemic, everything Unwound came to a stop. The passage of time and Vern's absence only made the idea of circling back stronger. In April of 2022, Unwound held its first official practice.  Jared Warren , arguably Vern's original protege as a member of the legendary band  Karp  and later the  Melvins  and  Big Business  came on to take over bass duties. To round out the sound and take the "burden of three" away,  Scott Seckington  of  Nocturnal Habits ,  Two Ton Boa , and  Old Haunts  was enlisted on guitar and keyboards. "Starting over again is a rebellious act against our failure," guitarist  Justin Trosper  said.

"What about the future of what it is?" – Unwound

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .

The Jesus Lizard, Underground Rock Heroes, Surface With a New Album

The band known for its raucous early ’90s records made with Steve Albini is returning with fresh music in September: “Rack,” a new LP that amps up its legacy.

A slightly blurred photo of four men standing in a row, all dressed in dark colors.

By Hank Shteamer

In May, following the death of Steve Albini , the engineer and tastemaker who helped define the aesthetics of independent rock in the early 1990s, a consensus about his past work started to emerge: Among the slew of albums that Albini recorded in those days, few encapsulated his signature sonic wallop — and the potency of the broader scene he championed — better than the early work of the Jesus Lizard.

On triumphs like “Goat” (1991) and “Liar” (1992), the vocalist David Yow, the guitarist Duane Denison, the bassist David Wm. Sims and the drummer Mac McNeilly skillfully wedded the thudding force and lascivious groove of the ’70s arena-rock gods they grew up on with the grimy racket of the ’80s underground.

Earlier this year, when the band started announcing a new run of festival appearances and headlining dates — the latest chapter in a sporadic reunion that commenced in 2009 , 10 years after the band’s initial breakup — it seemed like another chance for both old heads and newer converts to salute the band’s illustriously chaotic past. What no one could have expected is that this time around, the Jesus Lizard wouldn’t just be reaffirming its legacy but adding to it. This fall, it will unveil its first studio album in 26 years: “Rack,” a raucous record that recaptures the lunging momentum, stealth nuance and unhinged Yow-isms of its best work.

The uncanny timing of the announcement, arriving when the band is already being celebrated anew , is pure coincidence: The album, out Sept. 13, has been about five years in the making.

In a video interview from his Altadena, Calif., home, with posters for “Taxi Driver,” “Pulp Fiction” and other gritty film classics on the walls, Yow gushed like a proud parent over “Hide and Seek,” the album’s rampaging lead track. “It’s got so many hooks,” the 63-year-old vocalist said, his gray goatee framing a wide grin. He added that he’d gotten in the habit of asking both his bandmates and his wife, with a mixture of irony and wonder, “Have we written a pop song?”

Denison, 65, was amused and skeptical. “I don’t know what pop music David Yow’s listening to,” he deadpanned during a video interview from the combination library and music room of his Nashville home. “I don’t think Beyoncé or Lil Nas X are going to be jealous.”

Pop prospects aside, the Jesus Lizard’s distinctive play of chaos and control has long made it a touchstone among peers like Nirvana, who shared both live bills and a rare split single with the band.

“Listen to songs like ‘Scentless Apprentice’ and ‘Milk It’ from ‘In Utero,’” the Nirvana biographer Michael Azerrad wrote in an email, “with those burly, repetitive riffs and deranged, ranting vocals, they’re practically homages to the Jesus Lizard.” In “Book,” a 2014 tome commemorating the history of the Jesus Lizard to that point, Albini, a notoriously blunt observer, called them “the best musicians I’ve ever worked with.”

Yow, Denison and Sims formed the group in Austin, Texas, in 1987, following the breakup of Yow and Sims’s prior band, the nightmarish Scratch Acid. After moving to Chicago, they recruited McNeilly, an Atlanta drummer they’d met when his band 86 played in Texas. The quartet’s initial run yielded four indie classics, two inventive, undervalued major-label efforts and a storied trail of live bedlam. They split up amicably in 1999, but remained a touchstone for subsequent generations; in 2022, Keke Palmer wore a Jesus Lizard shirt in Jordan Peele’s sci-fi horror film “Nope,” sparking a wave of interest.

Austin Tackett, the bassist for the Oklahoma City noise-rock outfit Chat Pile, said in a phone interview that among younger acts aiming for a caustic heaviness, the Jesus Lizard remains “the dragon that everybody’s chasing.”

Denison has been the most musically active in the years since, continuing on with projects including the alternative-metal supergroup Tomahawk. Yow has collaborated with such bands as the Melvins, Qui, Flipper and the Dicks — an Austin punk outfit whose frontman, Gary Floyd, was a key early influence — while making a serious run at acting, taking on roles including the skeevy antagonist of the 2017 Macon Blair thriller “I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore.” McNeilly focused on family life and, more recently, began teaching drums and restoring vintage kits, and Sims started a new career as a C.P.A., in addition to devoting time to fatherhood, a short-lived Scratch Acid reunion along with Yow, and a low-profile experimental solo project, unFact.

Amid what Yow called the Jesus Lizard’s sporadic “re-enactment shows,” which continued from 2017 through 2019, the idea of making new music percolated. Denison, Sims and McNeilly — who left in 1996 but returned for the reunion — all quickly got on board.

“I was always into doing it,” McNeilly, 64, said in a video interview from his Evanston, Ill. home, his gracious, thoughtful demeanor contrasting sharply with his flailing attack behind the drums. “It had just been too long.”

Yow was noncommittal at first. “At one point we just had to decide,” said Sims, 60, sipping black coffee outside a midtown Manhattan takeout spot, sporting black Ray-Ban glasses and close-cropped salt-and-pepper hair. “I said to Duane, ‘Look, let’s just keep writing songs and sending the tapes to David.’”

“‘Is he really going to let us make an album without him?’” he added with a laugh.

Impressed with his bandmates’ demos, Yow signed on around 2019 and started workshopping vocals at a mic set up in his home office. “It was embarrassing to do that here with my wife,” Yow said, sounding bashful. “I would ask her, like, ‘Don’t you have some errands you can run?’” Searching for fresh inspiration, he borrowed phrasing ideas on select songs from Lhasa de Sela , the Mexican American singer-songwriter, whose 2003 album, “The Living Road,” he called “one of the best records ever made.”

The band refined the material during occasional gatherings in Nashville and tracked “Rack” there last fall at Audio Eagle — the home studio of the Black Keys drummer Patrick Carney — with the producer Paul Allen, a local guitarist and session musician. As they had in the ’90s, they recorded basic tracks live in the room, without a click track.

Sims said that, during the writing and demoing phase, he’d kept his expectations low, allowing for the possibility that the band might decide to shelve the project if it didn’t live up to their standards. But within the first few days of recording, after McNeilly laid down take after take of what the bassist called “absolutely monstrous” drum tracks, he felt confident enough to fire off a text to David Viecelli, the band’s longtime booking agent, informing him that they were making an album: “Maybe one of our best.”

“I never had the slightest glimmer of fear that, like, oh, they’re going to make something disappointing,” Viecelli said in a phone interview. “That said, the record is astonishing.”

One of the greatest strengths of “Rack” is its utter lack of ponderous maturity. “As much as anything,” Denison said of his aims for the lean, 37-minute, 11-track album, “I wanted to sound like a kid.” Lyrically, beyond a few veiled references to recent history — including pointed lines inspired by Donald Trump — the album plunges the listener back into the same depraved demimonde sketched out in the early Jesus Lizard catalog.

Yow couldn’t contain his laughter when recounting a Parisian scatological mishap that inspired a portion of “Moto(R),” one of several hard-driving rockers on the album’s back half. (“I had had some French coffee, and I had to poo,” he said.) And discussing “Lord Godiva” — the only song on “Rack” with roots in the band’s ’90s era, which comes complete with a beautifully beefy Sims bass solo — Yow highlighted the perverse misdeeds of its bloodthirsty protagonist. “They’re just so stupid and, I think, really funny,” he said.

As much as “Rack” reprises the time-tested Jesus Lizard formula of pulpy lyrical filth matched with volatile, menacing rock, it also reasserts that the band was far more versatile than thumbnail remembrances often suggest. “What If?” is pure skin-crawling moodcraft, driven by a cold-eyed Sims bass vamp, with Yow showing off his sharpened dramatic chops as he monologues about a widow who turns out to be “kinda crazy,” or worse. “Armistice Day” leans into downtempo doom-blues, offset by Yow’s forlorn-sounding croon and a sparse, piercing Denison lead that Yow said “brings tears to my eyes.”

While the LP has a more polished sound than early Jesus Lizard albums, it maintains an admirable rawness that receded on the two records the band made without Albini in the mid-to-late ’90s. Reached after Albini’s death in May, Yow said that in the band’s early days, he “thought of Steve almost as a fifth member.” He praised the way that Albini had rendered guitar, bass and drums each in the “absolute most intense possible way,” and, his voice choking up, recalled a time when he and the engineer were inseparable, often spending entire days shooting pool together at the Chicago Billiard Cafe.

As documented in “Book,” tensions later arose between the band and Albini, and the parties wouldn’t work together again. But Yow said that he and the engineer “ended up sort of patching things up.” He recalled a recent text exchange where Albini had told him, with typical crude flair, that fans were “going to just [expletive] themselves” when they learned that the Jesus Lizard had made a new album.

Reflecting on “Rack,” Denison said that despite his new status as a senior citizen — recently retired from a day job at a branch of the Nashville Public Library, the guitarist is considering when he ought to start collecting Social Security — he was intent on capturing a certain punk-rock abandon. “I’d like to think it’s always been this balance between the sophistication” and “the non-sophisticated,” he said, “just the pure drive and mayhem.”

McNeilly cited the explosive opening of “Hide and Seek,” which sets the tone for what follows.

“It’s almost like, OK, you’re on a ride now,” the drummer said, “and you’re not going to be able to get off.”
