Festivals in Bhutan during this Trip

In Bhutan the Thimphu and Paro Festivals are the two celebrations most popular with both the local people and visitors alike. The reason is two-fold; they take place during autumn and spring respectively, the two best seasons weather-wise for a visit to the kingdom. Secondly, they are held a mere hour’s drive from the airport, in the western region of Bhutan, making them easily accessible. This means visitors can easily attend a festival during a four-day visit.

Paro Tshechu, Paro, Mar 20, 2024 – Mar 24, 2024 Talo Tshechu, Punakha, Mar 17, 2024 – Mar 19, 2024

What to do if you are not in time for the festival?

If perchance you are traveling in the kingdom but cannot attand the festival, you still have a good opportunity to see a lot of the preparations as they start weeks prior to the actual celebrations. At the Dzong you can watch the monks preparing all the colorful materials they will need, so there are plenty of wonderful photo opportunity. The monks and lay people also start practicing their dances so you will be able to strike up conversations with the dancers hiding behind the elaborate masks, and learn more about the meaning and origin of these important celebrations on the Bhutan religious and cultural calendar.

If you are in time for one of the festivals, we will spend a full day watching and enjoying it. Lay dancers and monks in vibrant colored silk and brocade costumes with beautifully painted masks of all colors re-enact the lay and religious histories of the kingdom of Bhutan through dance movements and music. Prayer meetings, rituals and dances continue for a number of days, attended by hordes of villagers from all around the city. The atmosphere is lively and festive as people meet up with old friends and enjoy the sights. Every Bhutanese comes proudly dressed in his/her very best national finery and magnificent silks in all the colors of the rainbow are on display, one of the highlights of the festival. Thimphu and Paro reign as Bhutan’s most popular festivals, and although the celebration in Decehenphu is also well attended, it is smaller in scale.

Please note: If you would like to visit only Bhutan, you need to arrive either in Kathmandu , Nepal or New Delhi , India. Please contact us for a tailor-made itinerary.

--> Day 1 - Meet Up in Kathmandu

Kathmandu is Nepal’s colorful capital city, constantly buzzing and pleasantly chaotic. Narrow alleys, and secreted temples and shrines hide hundreds of century’s history while the mighty Himalayan mountains are ever watchful and present in the distance.

On arrival, you will be met at the airport and taken to your hotel half an hour’s drive away. This transfer is included in the cost of the tour.

Since arrival times differ, we have not planned any specific activities for this day and you are free to spend it as you wish. Maybe you would like to take the easy ten-minute walk to the heart of town, take a look around and later try some of the tasty Nepalese traditional cuisine. The downtown Thamel area has a variety of good restaurants and we suggest you choose one with a rooftop terrace from where you can observe the goings on in the streets and squares below. The Nepalese dumplings, for instance are a very good initiation into the local food. Here they are called momos and consists of steamed vegetables wrapped in a flour based dough. You might next like to try dal bhat, the delicious lentil soup served with curried vegetables and rice. The Kathmandu cuisine is an interesting mixture with influences from many regions with a profusion of flavors and colors.

--> Day 2 - Guided Tour of Kathmandu – Pashupatinath Temple, Boudhanath Stupa and Durbar Square

Today a local guide is taking you on an exciting sightseeing tour of the city, starting with the historic Durbar Square where you will see temples, palaces and courtyards erected during three hundred years of Malla, Rana and Shah dynasties. You will also pay a visit to the Asan ceremonial market square, as well as the residence of the living goddess, the Kumari Devi worshipped by Hindus and Buddhists alike.

Later in the day we plan a visit to maybe the most sacred Shiva temple in the world, namely the Pashupatinath Temple located on the Bagmati river banks. This is also Nepal’s holiest and oldest Hindu shrine. The Bagmati River is revered as it eventually meets up with the holy Ganges and its ghats are crowded with pilgrims coming to bathe in the river’s waters. The ghats, the steps which lead down to the water, are also an important cremation site for commoners and royals who have their ashes scattered on the water that later joins the holy Ganges. Please note that cremations may be underway during our visit as they take place in the open air next to the river.

We return to the city to admire the highest stupa in the entire Kathmandu Valley, the 131 ft./40 m high Boudhanath Stupa . The massive mandala of this marvelous temple makes it one of the largest spherical stupas on the globe and definitely the largest in Nepal. The all-seeing, ever-present eyes of the Buddha painted on the spire look down on monks and pilgrims while hundreds of prayer flags move in the breeze.

--> Day 3 - Flight to Paro in Bhutan, Drive to Thimphu, Bhutan’s Relaxed Capital / Explore Peaceful Thimphu

Your driver will take you to the airport in Kathmandu for your Drukair flight to Paro . If visibility is good, you will be happy to see the wonderful Himalayan Mountains from the plane, just the thing to put you in the right mood for what is to come.

The flight leaves at around 9:10 a.m. and arrives in Paro at 10:30 a.m. The cost is around 285 USD per person .

While traveling in Bhutan you will have your own guide and a driver, all included in your tour cost. Your overnight stays, excursions and three meals a day are also included.

After all entry formalities have been dealt with, you are ready to start to discover what Bhutan has in store for you. We take to the road for the 1.5-hour drive from the airport in Paro to Thimphu, capital city of this Himalayan kingdom.

Once in Thimphu, we will start a full day tour of the city to see the main attractions. First on the itinerary is the Tashichho Dzong, a 17 th century monastic fort also referred to as the Fortress of the Glorious Religion. This magnificent complex is Bhutan’s religious center and has been the seat of government ever since the 1960’s. We continue to the Takin Zoo to see the kingdom’s national animal, a gnu goat or takin up close, before either watching a workshop on thangka painting or otherwise witness the process of paper making at a factory. If you are interested, and we are sure you will be, we can stroll through the market of traditional handicrafts for a few memorable souvenirs to take back home. In Bhutan all the city buildings must constructed in the traditional design and decorated in religious symbols and Buddhist motifs. We will also pay a visit to the King Jigme Dorji Wanhchuk Memorial, built in Tibetan style, in honor of Bhutan’s 3 rd king. The chorten sits in the heart of the city and is the focus of the local people’s daily worship.

Depending on the time, we will end the day with a stroll through the buzzing streets of Thimphu, emerge ourselves in the vibrant ambience of this unique capital, so singular in fact, that there is not one single traffic light in sight.

Tip: Thimphu’s weekend markets are worthwhile; this is when traders from all around the region gather to sell their goods.

Your hotel in Thimphu is centrally located so you can easily strol to the huge archery stadium and main street.

--> Day 4 - Drive Across Dochula Pass to Punakha

In the morning your guide and driver will meet you for the two to three-hour drive on pretty curving roads to Punakha , our next destination.

The Black Mountain roads lead through the scenic landscapes up to Dochula Pass at 10,499 ft./3,200 m above sea level. It is a beautiful journey past expansive terraced rice fields and small scattered villages. As we get nearer the summit of the pass, more and more multi-coloured prayer flags grace the sides of the road. If the day is clear, this serpentine highway surprises with spectacular views of the Himalayan Mountain Range as well as Bhutan’s highest peak, the highest unclimbed mountain in the world, Gangkhar Punsum towering 24, 741 ft./7,541 m up into the heavens.

As we descend into the Punakha Valley on the other side of the pass, there is a change in scenery. Oak and pine forests, cypresses, alders and fields of rhododendrons are replaced by more tropical vegetation. The milder climate of the valley floor allows for cacti, bamboo and orange groves to thrive here. This is fertile farmland, fed by the Mochu and Phochu Rivers that flow through the valley.

We make a stop at the so-called ‘Mad Monk Monastery’, Chimi Lhakhang. The lama Drukpa Kenley was a controversial figure who allegedly managed to subdue the Dochu La demoness. Highly revered, his teachings razed many an eyebrow amongst the more conventional and traditional Buddhists. He would often go to outrageous excesses in order to deliver his messages. The yogi was of the opinion that the strict doctrines of the time isolated the monks from the ordinary people. He intended to overcome these rigid barriers by calculated provocations, by using ‘…fair and foul words for mantras’, to quota him directly.

You are booked in a traditional style hotel some 3 mi./5 km from the city center. Lunch is an introduction to the kingdoms national dish called Ema datse , a hearty soup made with chilli peppers and cheese. Suitably restored, we embark on a two-hour round trip hike to the Khamsum Yulley Chorten, walking past houses and farmlands. At one of the farmsteads we will stop for some yak butter tea, talk to the people and see what life on a traditional Bhutanese farm is really like.

--> Day 5 - Explore Punakha Valley, Visit to the Punakha Dzong / Return Journey to Paro

We have breakfast in our hotel and then continue to explore the beautiful Punakha Valley. Water from the glaciers flow down into the valley, making the soil moist and fertile, conditions which suit the cultivation of large fields of rice. One of the most uncommon kinds of rice on earth, red rice is also grown here. It is rare since only one crop is sown and harvested per year. If you would like to find out more, your guide can accompany you to a rice field where the farmer can tell you more about this labor intensive process. You will learn that as rice plants grow older, they need less water and so are moved to higher terraces with less water.

Undeniably one of the largest and most striking monastic forts in the kingdom of Bhutan is the Punakhu Dzong , and this is where we head next. Located on a sandbank between two meeting rivers, is was the former seat of Bhutan’s government. Today however, the 17 th century construction serves as winter residence for the chief abbot of the kingdom, his Holiness the Je Khenpo and his entourage. We come face to face with golden spires, numerous courtyards, tiered walls, a main temple with treasures inside, and the utse, all of which withstood floods, earthquakes and fires through its long history. Maybe your arrival coincides with a prayer meeting and you are lucky to observe the monks deep in prayer in the flickering light of candles with the tinkle of bells and beating of drums as background sounds that seems to engulf the whole space.

After this uplifting spiritual experience we drive back across the Dochula Pass to Paro , a four-hour journey.

Spreading out along the Paro Chhu River, the city of Paro has a beautiful location surrounded by terraced fields and forested valleys, the perfect setting for the numerous large ancient dzongs which form the region’s military, religious and political centers.

Your overnight stay in Paro is in a traditional stone cottage, decorated with beautiful carvings and the typical bright colors of Bhutan.

Depending on the time, we may make a short orientation tour through Paro and pay a visit to the Rimpung Dzong, a high point in Bhutanese architecture.

--> Day 6 - Paro / Hike Up to the Tiger’s Nest

This morning you will see one of the most impressive sights in the world when we follow the trail to the highly revered Taktsang Monastery sitting precariously on a steep cliff face 2,953 ft./900m from the valley floor. Popularly called the Tiger’s Nest, the story goes that the founder of the Drukpa Order and of Buddhism in Bhutan, Guru Rinpoche was transported on a flying tiger to a cave at this location. Here he spent the next few months in meditation before he established the famous monastery. The 1.9 mi./3 km hike is steep and quite demanding, and depending on your level of fitness and pace, the round trip will take between four and five hours to complete. Stone steps make up most of the way and you will be walking through pine and oak forests, eventually reaching a ridge where you will be delighted with wonderful views of your surroundings and the monastery.

We will spend the afternoon visiting this pretty town’s other attractions. The Paro Dzong is a huge monastic fort with numerous courtyards and temples. Above the dzong stands the historic watch tower which serves as the National Museum . Here you will find a wealth of information on the history and life in Bhutan, Land of the Dragon. Take some time to enjoy the fantastic views of the Paro Valley.

On our way back we stop at the Kyichu Lhakhang Temple , one of the kingdom’s oldest temples said to date back to the 7 th century. It was erected by Songtsen Gampo, a Tibetan king as part of a series of more than 100 temples constructed to halt a giant female ochre from preventing the spread of Buddhism in Bhutan and Tibet. Apparently this temple secures the left foot of the humongous demoness.

--> Day 7 - Take Part in the Yearly Paro Festival Celebrations

Today is a day filled with happy crowds, masked dances, music and other festivities. We will join the locals and thousands of people from all over the kingdom to celebrate the Paro Festival .

We are up before the crack of dawn to witness the unfolding of the huge thangka painting for display on the monastery walls. This occurs only once every year on the final day of the festival and allegedly the sins of those who witness it, will be cleansed. It is a very special and unique occasion and definitely worth such an early start.

When the festival finally winds down, you are free to relax and spend the rest of the day as you please.

--> Day 8 - Flight to Kathmandu in Nepal / Drive to Chitwan National Park

After a week filled with thrilling experiences of all kinds, you will take a flight back to Kathmandu in Nepal. On arrival in the capital, your driver will transport you to Chitwan.

The flight leaves at around 7:10 a.m. and arrives in Kathmandu at 8:10 a.m. The cost is around 270 USD per person.

The drive to the national park lasts around four hours and follows the mountains east. Formerly the hunting grounds of the royals, Chitwan was declared a conservation area and nature reserve in 1973. Thick forests and jungle make up large parts of the park where we will spend the next two nights. Optional activities are a ride on an ox cart to see Tharu Village or a dance show in the evening. Both of these will add to your knowledge and understanding of the fascinating details of tribal village life.

--> Day 9 - Chitwan National Park, Jeep Safari, Dugout Canoe Excursion

Often nature is at its most beautiful at sunrise, and Chitwan Park is no different. A thin mist of mystery and hidden secrets moves across the plains while sunlight slowly starts to illuminate the villages. Around the waterways and rivers animal and human life begin to stir, and working elephants slowly make their way across the shallow water. Fishermen in canoes cast their lines and an old ferry crosses the river.

This morning you will go on a Jeep safari through the park. The reserve covers around 356 square mi./923 square km of the low lands of southern Nepal, the terai. On both the plains and in the forested areas, the opportunity of seeing wildlife is excellent and you can expect to spot sambar, the one-horned rhino of India, chital deer, Rhesus monkeys and languor, guar, jackal, crocodiles and mongoose. With a little luck, one of the rarer animals will show itself, maybe a tiger, leopard, sloth beer, leopard cat or Indian bison. It is also a bird watcher’s paradise with more than 500 species recorded in the area.

In the afternoon your guide will take you for a trip in a dugout canoe . Floating down the Rapti River for a relaxing half hour you will pass crocodiles sunning themselves on the river shore. Afterwards the jungle tour continues on foot and you follow narrow nature trails surrounded by forest. Although the thought of rhinos, tigers and leopards roaming here may scare most people, you need not be alarmed as you will be accompanied by a very knowledgeable guide who knows how to avoid danger and dangerous animals in this specific habitat.

Returning to the lodge, you have the remainder of the day to just relax and enjoy the sounds of nature, or to look around on your own.

--> Day 10 - Drive Back to Kathmandu, Free Time to Explore Kathmandu’s Temples and Bazaars

Back in Kathmandu after a road trip with your competent driver, you will book into the same hotel you previously stayed in.

Today you can discover more of the treasures of the city and its surroundings unescorted. Here you can pick and choose; Bhaktapur is a Newari town which has been preserved almost intact. It is located in the Kathmandu Valley towards the eastern corner. The City of the Devotees, as it is also known, is a medieval town where time seems to have come to a halt. In its hay day it stood central on the prosperous India, China and Tibet trade routes. The ancient city center is filled with palaces, monasteries and temples, ready to rope you into its beguiling cultural and historical embrace. Watch potters shaping lumps of clay on their traditional wheels, and jewellers and other artisans at work in this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Pick up a few bargains while you take your time to wander through interesting stalls and shops.

Alternatively, take a trip to the charming so-called ‘ Monkey Temple’ where the omniscient, all seeing eyes of the Buddha keep watch over the Kathmandu Valley from the hilltop Swayambunath Temple . Watch out for the brazen monkeys living in the temple’s ancient walls, they will happily relieve you of food, your camera, bag or other personal items.

If you feel like relaxing and let all the wonderful experiences of your Bhutan and Nepal Tour properly sink in, make your way to a rooftop restaurant or café on Durbar Square, order a coffee, sit back and just enjoy the comings and goings of the people down below. Do not forget to lift up your eyes every now and then for the fabulous view of the serene mountain landscape outside the city.

--> Day 11 - Final Day of Your Bhutan and Nepal Round Trip

After a last breakfast at the hotel your tour comes to an end and the driver will take you to the airport in time to catch your home bound flight. Please send us an email, relating your experiences and travel stories, we would love to hear from you.

Golden Triangle 6 days trip

**This review was written in German and has been translated using free translating software

We experienced a wonderful trip that impressed us very much. Our program was very varied and ran without any problems.

Your commitment and your availability around the clock, with wishes or changes during the trip, were great and certainly not self-evident. For this a very big thank you to you!

Visiting the Taj Mahal early in the morning to avoid the large crowds was a very good recommendation. The silence and the atmosphere at sunrise are simply fascinating.

We are very grateful for the great experiences and the unforgettable impressions we were able to collect.

We will be very happy to recommend you.

Tailor-made tour of North and South India

Dear Mr. Vikas, we had a hitch-free travel experience, full of positive impressions. As a matter of fact, we recommend this trip to everyone strongly, and we will never forget the organizers for a real professional job. Vacation India is highly recommended from us.

We spent 2-days in New Delhi and Agra. We later move from Delhi to Chennai. Going to our plan, we intended making a roundtrip all through Mahabalipuram, Pondicherry, Tanjore and Trichy, Chettinad, Thekkady, Madurai, Munnar, Backwaters using a houseboat. Also, Mararikulam Beach to Kochi, and from there we had a return flight to Singapore.

As the journey progressed, we experienced India and its rich culture in an excitingly different way. We enriched our travel experience by learning about the people of India from their birth times to death days. It did not end there; the trip was made more fun-filled with houseboat experience and night in Backwaters. Also, we visited tea plantations in the mountains, botanical garden and so much more.

The rainy weather in Thekkady (Periyar Tiger Reserve) made us have a change of plan—we canceled our trip on a bamboo raft. Though the journey was worth it in every regard; we enjoyed our trekking tour in the Reserve. But we ran out of luck as we couldn’t set our eyes on the flying squirrel due to the heavy downpour. Some of the places of interest that made our trip worthwhile are the Taj Mahal, National Museum, the Rail Museum in New Delhi and the Mosque in Old Delhi.

We can’t simply exhaust all here, but we are convinced that our fond memories will always be with us all along.

Delhi to Agra Taj Mahal Visit

**This review was written in Spanish and has been translated using using Google Translator

Actually The service turned into friendliness and was excellent. He knew the places perfectly and I had a very good explanation of everything. Vipul Gupta is an excellent guide.

A bite of India, real, authentic, unforgettable

He was traveling to Delhi for work and only had 3 days available that he wanted to make the most of. I contacted vacationindia.com and quickly Laura contacted me and she understood my idea very well. With the little time she had and having visited India 10 years ago, Laura proposed a brief but intense experience tour of Agra and Jaipur. I didn’t want to miss the Taj Mahal, it’s a place you can always come back to. June may not be the best time due to the heat, but on the contrary, it is very calm in terms of tourism and the Taj Mahal was almost for me and some Indian travelers. I loved the proposal of having dinner with a local family, I was able to see how some typical d ishes are prepared, all a science and an art! The most important lesson is to be generous with spices, and the concept of too much and too little is very relative. I take with me this little time so unique and familiar.

The traffic is still chaotic but the carts have improved a lot and the trip to Jaipur was very nice and safe with my driver Madam. In Jaipur my guide Manu was waiting for me, with a flower necklace and a smile that did not fade for two days. Manu is charming, he made me feel very comfortable and relaxed and he speaks good Spanish. As I had little time, I selected with Manu the visits that most interested me, I wanted to see the observatory, and Manu knew how to explain the instruments to me wonderfully and even he made me able to calculate the time with exact precision using the huge sundial!

We rode a rickshaw through the old part and as I wanted to get out of the city, we went up to Nagarah Fort to see the sunset over Jaipur.

Jaipur is known for its textile manufacturing and its semi-precious stones and gems, I wanted to know a little more but I had a bad memory of my first time in India when the guides took me to emporiums and tourist shops and I felt pressured to buy. I mentioned this to Manu and he suggested that I visit an area of artisans, where I could see how local textiles and gem shops work. I enjoyed the time without pressure and I couldn’t resist buying a silk pashmina, but nothing else and everyone was so happy.

The next day I ventured out on a bike tour of the city, and it was a sensational experience! I was a bit scared of dealing with the crazy traffic but Hisha made it easy. We leave very early, at 6am when the city has not yet woken up, we stop at a stall to have a lassi, a popular local drink made from yogurt, which the owner family prepares every day in a traditional way since 1944. Soon the More early risers of Jaipuree were approaching for their lassi to start the day. We enter the alleys of the old city, now empty and impassable after 11am when the shops overflow their premises and fill the streets with thousands of stalls. Jaipur was the first planned city in India, and it was very interesting to understand how the city was created, with its havelis, mansions that served as workshops, shops and dwellings, and how it became prosperous, attracting artisans, scholars and merchants from all over the world. India.

We walked through the bustling local market, an explosion of colors and fragrances, flowers, fruits, vegetables, aromatic herbs… we approached a Hindi temple and I mixed with the crowd that begins their day with songs, offerings and petitions to their gods. Quite a show!

Visiting the Amber Fort with my guide was great, because not only did I marvel at the architecture, decorative arts, or the ingenuity of the solutions, but I traveled back in time understanding what life in the palace was like in its origin.

Leaving Jaipur and on the way to Delhi, I was able to visit the village of Samode, rural and quiet. I keep the chai that I shared on the street with some local farmers while they told me how their harvest was going while they waited for the rains.

It has been a very short trip, although so full of experiences that it seems longer. Thanks to vacationindia for making it possible, I am left wanting more so my next destination will be India again, now the South!

Get ready for an extraordinary adventure in Delhi! Today, you’ll embark on a unique time travel tour , journeying from the majestic Old Delhi  steeped in history, all the way to the modern marvels of New Delhi . This exciting exploration will weave together the vibrant tapestry of Delhi, allowing you to witness the city's ancient grandeur seamlessly blend with its contemporary flair.

Your exploration begins in the heart of Old Delhi, where you'll visit Jama Masjid , one of India's largest and most awe-inspiring mosques. Construction began in 1644 under the reign of the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan , the same visionary who brought us the Taj Mahal. This magnificent structure, also known as Masjid-i-Jahan Numa  (meaning "mosque commanding the view of the world"), is crafted from red sandstone and adorned with beautiful white marble. Step back into the 17th century and stand in awe under the towering minarets of Jama Masjid. Feel the spiritual energy resonate through time and imagine the grandeur of the Mughal era as the call to prayer echoes through the centuries.

Later, take a stroll to Chandni Chowk , one of the oldest and busiest markets in Old Delhi. Also established by the Shah Jahan  in the 17th century, this market is a maze of narrow alleyways filled with small shops offering delectable snacks, sweets, and savories, as well as budget-friendly deals on clothing and other items. Chandni Chowk stretches from the iconic Red Fort  to the historic Fatehpuri Masjid , covering a significant distance. To fully immerse yourself in the charm of Old Delhi, we recommend taking an optional rickshaw tour around Chandni Chowk.

Don't miss the opportunity to pass by the Red Fort  (World Heritage) and marvel at its symbol of grandeur. Known as Lal Qila  and built by the Shah Jahan , the fort serves as the main residence for the Mughal emperors of India and is recognized as a significant architectural masterpiece.

After that, make your way to New Delhi and explore the iconic India Gate . This magnificent memorial is dedicated to the Indian soldiers of World War I. Resembling the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, India Gate stands as a prominent landmark, symbolizing an important chapter in India's history.

As you move forward, you'll have the opportunity to witness the transformation of Delhi into a thriving modern metropolis while also having a chance to take photos of several notable landmarks , including the Rashtrapati Bhavan (Presidential Residence), Parliament House, North Block, and South Block.

Then, you will arrive at Qutub Minar , a UNESCO World Heritage  Site and the  tallest brick minaret in the world . Standing proudly at an astonishing height of 72.5 meters (238 feet), the Qutub Minar showcases the exquisite craftsmanship of Indo-Islamic architecture. Prepare to be enthralled by the sheer magnificence of this historical masterpiece as you delve into its rich and fascinating history that dates back to the 12th century.

Finally, visit Humayun's Tomb , another jewel in Delhi's crown and a UNESCO World Heritage  Site. It holds the distinction of being the first significant example of a Mughal garden tomb. Its breathtaking design and captivating blend of Persian and Indian architectural styles even served as inspiration for the future wonder of the world, the Taj Mahal! Adorned with intricate marble inlays and surrounded by Char Bagh gardens, this red sandstone monument stands as an iconic symbol of Mughal architecture . Stroll through the paradise garden, marvel at the architectural grandeur, and immerse yourself in the captivating love story it holds.

After this amazing tour, you’ll head back your hotel.

A blend of Islamic, Persian, and Indian influences

Ready for your road trip? After breakfast, you’ll take your very first road trip in India! This journey is approximately 250 km (155 miles) and takes about 4.5 hours, depending on traffic conditions. The primary route for travel between Delhi and Agra is the Yamuna Expressway. It is known for its well-maintained surface and infrastructure. With our selected vehicle, that's a comfy road trip  guaranteed.

Upon arrival in Agra, check into your hotel and unwind after the driving. Later, you will go to Agra Fort  which is located not far from Taj Mahal. Interestingly, Shah Jahan was imprisoned within the Agra Fort by his son Aurangzeb. From his vantage point, he is said to have gazed upon the Taj Mahal, which served as a constant reminder of his beloved wife.

Agra Fort is another UNESCO World Heritage Site , a formidable red sandstone fort built by Emperor Akbar in the 16th century, serving as the  seat of Mughal power  for nearly a century. Your guide will lead you through the imposing gateways, showcasing the fort's rich history and architectural brilliance. Explore the various palaces, courtyards, and audience halls that once housed emperors, their families, and the Mughal court. Witness the exquisite craftsmanship evident in the intricate carvings, marble inlay work, and jali screens (decorative perforated stonework).

Another site today is Mehtab Bagh  for the amazing sunset view. Set off on a brief excursion to the adorable Mehtab Bagh, fondly known as the " Moonlight Garden ". This 16th-century Mughal-era garden offers a unique perspective of the Taj Mahal, especially during sunset. Watch the iconic  Taj Mahal's silhouette  reflecting over the calm Yamuna River , creating a truly magical scene. And it's a perfect sneak peek preview of the Taj Mahal .

The Agra Fort, also known as Agra's Red Fort

Today will be the big day for the  Taj Mahal ! Your knowledgeable guide will pick you up from your hotel in the pre-dawn hours, so you can enjoy a serene sunrise viewing of the Taj Mahal bathed in ethereal glow , away from the day's heat and crowds.

As you approach the magnificent Taj Mahal, your guide will streamline the entry process as you admire its immaculate white marble facade glistens in the morning light. This remarkable architectural masterpiece, recognized as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World , serves as an eternal symbol of love. Emperor Shah Jahan built the Taj Mahal in the 17th century as a tribute to his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal.

Walking up to the Main Gate of the Taj Mahal is an experience in itself. The gate is carved from red sandstone and adorned with intricate floral patterns. It serves as a grand prelude to the awe-inspiring monument that awaits you. Stepping through, you enter the Charbagh, a formal Mughal garden  divided into  four perfect quarters  by reflecting pools. This symmetry and balance foreshadow the architectural mastery  evident in the Tomb itself.

The centerpiece of the Taj Mahal complex is the white marble mausoleum, which houses the cenotaphs of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal. The story goes that Shah Jahan deliberately built the minarets of the Taj Mahal - towers that serve as vantage points and landmarks - away from and tilted outwards from the main structure. In the unlikely event of a collapse, they would fall away from the Taj Mahal. So the tomb of his beloved wife would remain unharmed. Intricate floral designs , calligraphy , and semi-precious stone inlays  that adorn the tomb's surface offer a glimpse into the unparalleled craftsmanship of the era, leaving you breathless with its beauty.

After marveling at the architectural mastery of the Taj Mahal, you will return to your hotel for a refreshing breakfast.

After that, you will depart from Agra and make your way to Jaipur via Fatehpur Sikri. The journey covers approximately 250km and takes about 5 hours. En route to Jaipur, make a stop at  Fatehpur Sikri , meaning " City of Victory ”, (UNESCO World Heritage Site), which is which is 40 kilometers west of Agra. It served as the capital of the Mughal Empire under Emperor Akbar from 1571 to 1585. Visiting Fatehpur Sikri offers a deep dive into India's rich history, providing insight into the life and times of one of its most celebrated emperors, Akbar the Great. This  UNESCO World Heritage Site  is a prime example of Akbar's architectural genius, dominated by red sandstone buildings, showcasing a unique blend of Hindu, Jain, and Islamic architectural styles, a reflection of the syncretic culture developed under Akbar’s rule.

The city is divided into two main areas: the  royal palace complex  and the  religious complex . The royal complex includes stunning buildings such as the Diwan-i-Aam (Hall of Public Audience), Diwan-i-Khas (Hall of Private Audience), Jodha Bai's Palace, Birbal's House, and Panch Mahal, among others. The religious compound features the  Jama Masjid (Grand Mosque)  and  the tomb of Salim Chisti , a revered Sufi saint, which draws pilgrims from all over due to its sanctity and the belief in the fulfillment of wishes tied to it. One of Fatehpur Sikri’s most iconic structures is the  Buland Darwaza  ( The Gate of Victory ), standing at a height of 55 meters. It was erected by Akbar to commemorate his victory over Gujarat and is a magnificent example of Mughal architecture. The gate serves as the main entrance to the Jama Masjid.

Following the tour, drive on to Jaipur, which is approximately 210 kilometers away, taking around 4 hours from Fatehpur Sikri. Welcome to Jaipur , the vibrant  capital of Rajasthan , India, known as the  "Pink City " for its trademark building color. Jaipur's most striking feature is the rose-colored hue of its buildings in the old city center. his distinctive color scheme is attributed to a welcoming gesture by Maharaja Ram Singh who had the city painted pink in 1876 to honor a visit by the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII). Upon reaching Jaipur, check in at your hotel and take some time to unwind.

A Monument of Love and Loss

After a delightful breakfast, embark on a full-day Jaipur sightseeing  led by your guide, including visits to the magnificent Amber Fort, the City Palace, the Hawa Mahal, and the Jaipur Jantar Mantar.

Your first destination is  Amber Fort  (World Heritage) .  The magnificent, formidable, honey-hued fort of Amber is an exquisite example of Rajput architecture . It is located in the rugged hills about 11km northeast of Jaipur, overlooking Maota Lake, and is a must-see sight in the city. Amber was the former capital of Jaipur state. This magnificent fort comprises an extensive palace complex, showcasing a fine blend of Rajput and Mughal architectural styles. It is built from pale yellow and pink sandstone, along with white marble, and features a grand palace, temples, and several ornate gates. Of particular interest is the  Sheesh Mahal (Mirror Palace) , where the walls are inlaid with exquisite mirrored motifs that dance in the flickering flame of even a single candle.

Tips: You can choose to take a jeep ride (optional) up to the Amber fork rather than take an elephant ride (optional).

You can reach the Amber fort through the  Suraj Pol (Sun Gate)  which leads to the Jaleb Chowk, the first main courtyard. Diagonally opposite is the  Chand Pol (Moon Gate) . From Jaleb Chowk, a flight of stairs leads up to the small  Siladevi Temple , whose doors feature relief work in silver. The  main palace  is up next, which includes the Diwan-e-Am (hall for a private audience with the king) with carved columns and latticed galleries, the king’s apartments, the gate Ganesh Pol with beautiful arches, and Jai Mandir or Sheesh Mahal. Stand at one of the many arched windows of the palace and take in the rolling shrubland stretching up to the horizon and the scenic Maota Lake at the foot of the fort.

Next, head to the  City Palace , situated in the old city of Jaipur. It is a sprawling complex that blends Rajput and Mughal architecture styles and serves as the royal residence of the Jaipur royal family . The palace houses several buildings, including Chandra Mahal, the Armoury, Diwan-i-Khas, and Diwan-i-Am Art Gallery, along with courtyards and gardens. Among them, Pitam Niwas Chowk  (Courtyard of Love) is a photographer's delight. It is famous for its 4 colored gates, each representing a different season. The Peacock Gate  depicts autumn, the Lotus Gate signifies summer, the Green Gate represents spring, and finally, the Rose Gate embodies winter.

No tour would be complete without visiting  Hawa Mahal  (Palace of Winds). It is renowned for its unique 5-story exterior, resembling the honeycomb of a beehive. This architectural wonder is built of red and pink sandstone, and features an incredible 953 intricately carved windows. These windows, resembling a honeycomb design , gave the building its name ("hawa" meaning "wind" in Hindi) and allowed royal ladies  to observe everyday life and festivals in the street below without being seen. The clever design also facilitate the circulation of cool breezes throughout the palace, providing natural air conditioning , especially during the hot summer months. Hawa Mahal is an architectural marvel that blends Hindu Rajput architecture  with Islamic Mughal architecture . The facade of Hawa Mahal is a stunning sight, particularly when bathed in the golden light of the early morning or late afternoon.

Immediately behind the Hawa Mahal is the  Jaipur Jantar Mantar  (World Heritage), considered one of the oldest astronomical observatories in the world, built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II . The observatory houses the world's largest stone sundial and features 16 devices designated to measure time, observe planetary motion around the sun, and keep track of celestial bodies. The geometric devices of the observatory are both functional and architecturally fascinating, offering a glimpse into the advanced astronomy studies  of the 18th century.

Visitors ascend to the Amber Fort by an elephant ride.

After breakfast, you will take a scenic drive back to Delhi , covering a distance of approximately 290 kilometers. With a comfortable private car, the journey is expected to take around 6 hours. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the picturesque landscapes as you make your way back to the bustling capital city.

In Delhi, take the opportunity to freely explore the local markets and immerse yourself in the authentic way of life in India. Wander through vibrant markets, interact with locals, and get a taste of the rich local culture and traditions.

Chandni Chowk is a bustling and chaotic street

On this day, you will be accompanied to Delhi Airport for your flight to Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal.

This afternoon, you will have time to explore the highlights of Kathmandu. Begin by visiting  Kathmandu Durbar Square  (World Heritage), one of three  royal palace squares  in the Kathmandu Valley. You won't miss the  Hanuman Dhoka , an iconic red palace adorned with intricate wooden carvings, which served as the residence of  Malla Kings  for centuries. Most of our guests arm to visit  Kumari Ghar  (House of the Living Goddess) and  Taleju Temple  (closely linked to the tradition of the Kumari). Through the Kumari Chowk, you may have the opportunity to catch a glimpse of the  Kumari  (a young girl worshiped as the  living goddess Durga ), who is revered by both Hindus and Buddhists in Nepal. The Kumari is selected from a Buddhist family through traditional tests and is believed to be the incarnation of the  Goddess Taleju  (Durga) until she reaches menstruation age.  Dashain Festival  (October; a 15-day festival) and  Tihar Festival  (November; Festival of Lights) offer the best chances of seeing the Kumari in public processions. The  Bhairav Statue  is also one of the best spots to experience Hindu culture, where you can witness local people worshipping the fearsome  god Bhairav , the protector of the city.

Next, move on to  Swayambhunath Temple  (Stupa), also known as the  Monkey Temple  due to the swarms of monkeys that inhabit the area. Located on a hilltop on the western edge of Kathmandu,  Swayambhunath Stupa  (World Heritage) is visible from a distance. You can climb the steep stairs to reach the top of the hill, where you can enjoy  panoramic views of Kathmandu Valley  and even  the Himalayas  on clear days. As a must-visit destination in Kathmandu, the stupa is believed to have been built over 2,500 years ago, making it one of the oldest Buddhist sites in the world. The base of the stupa is surrounded by colorful  prayer flags  fluttering in the wind, carrying prayers and blessings to the heavens. It is a sacred pilgrimage site for both  Hindus and Buddhists , signifying the coexistence of diverse beliefs in Nepal while showcasing  Newari artistic heritage . Take your time to indulge in the temple's serene and spiritual ambiance, basking in its captivating architecture and embracing its natural beauty.

Accommodate in Kathmandu.

Swayambhunath Stupa, Nepal

This morning, you will travel about 18 km, taking about 1hour, to reach  Bhaktapur  (Bhadgaun), also known as An Open Museum . Stepping into  Bhaktapur Durbar Square  (World Heritage), you will be transported to a bygone era of Malla Dynasty grandeur. It served as the seat of the Malla kings  from the 12th to 15th centuries and was the capital of the Greater Malla Kingdom until the 15th century. The square is an assembly of grandiose palaces, courtyards, and temples. Among these, the  55 Window Palace is particularly notable for its intricate wooden carvings and the elaborate balcony that gives the palace its name. The  Golden Gate , which serves as the entrance to the main courtyard of the palace, is an exemplary work of repoussé artistry, adorned with figures of deities and mythical creatures. The Nyatapola Temple , which towers above the square with its five-story structure, is the tallest temple in Nepal. Nearby, the Vatsala Temple , with its distinctive stone construction and the famous "bell of barking dogs," adds to the square's spiritual ambiance. Enjoy leisurely walks in this living museum, where festivals, rituals, and daily activities continue to reflect the traditions of the Newar people. Bhaktapur is also famous for its pottery, and if time permits, you can visit Pottery Square  to see pots being thrown, dried in the sun, and fired.

Next, drive to visit another World Heritage site called Changu Narayan Temple  (7km, 0.5h). Dedicated to Lord Vishnu , this temple is revered as the oldest in Nepal, with origins dating back to the early 4th century. Architecturally, this temple is a masterpiece of Nepalese temple design, showcasing the  two-tiered Pagoda style . The temple complex is adorned with intricately carved wood, metal, and stone artworks that depict various deities, as well as scenes from Hindu epics like the Mahabharata and Ramayana. While wandering in the temple, you can read more about Hindu mythology  and marvel at the skill of ancient Nepalese artisans  and their artworks from the 5th to the 12th century. The hilltop location offers breathtaking views of the Kathmandu Valley.

Then, head back toward Kathmandu (20km, 1h) and pay a visit to  Pashupatinath Temple  (World Heritage) - a stunning pagoda-style Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. As the oldest Hindu temple in Nepal, dating back to around 400 B.C., the main temple complex located at the Bagmati River  is only open to Hindus. However, non-Hindus can observe the temple from the terraces on the east side of the river. Pashupatinath is often regarded as the Nepali equivalent of Varanasi  in India. Originating in the Himalayan Mountains, the Bagmati River is believed to possess purifying qualities for the soul and holds immense sacred significance for both Hindus and Buddhists. Along the banks, there are platforms dedicated to cremation rites . For generations, families have brought the bodies of their loved ones who have passed away to the river, washing their feet and sprinkling drops of water on their faces. It is believed that the river washes away a person's sins  and facilitates their journey to heaven. The bodies are then cremated along the riverbanks, and the ashes are scattered into the water. From across the river, you will notice numerous hermit caves to the north of the cremation platforms. For centuries, hermits and ascetics have been meditating in these caves, and this practice continues to this day. Slow down in NEPAL , the place well-known as Never Ending Peace And Love .

At last, you will head to  Bodhnath  which is a focal point for Tibetan Buddhism in Nepal and home to Boudhanath Stupa (one of the largest Buddhist stupas in the world). You can join the Tibetan pilgrims, and walk around the Boudhanath Stupa  (World Heritage) clockwise, turning the prayer wheels under the protective gaze of Buddha's eyes . This is a way to show respect for the Buddha and to accumulate merit. The Boudhanath Stupa is 36 meters tall and 108  meters in diameter, designed as a mandala to represent the Buddhist cosmos. The structure is dominated by a massive dome, at the top of which sits a square tower adorned with the omnipresent eyes of Buddha , gazing serenely in the four cardinal directions. These eyes symbolize the omniscience of Buddha, offering protection and wisdom to all who seek refuge. Surrounding the stupa, prayer flags flutter in the wind, carrying mantras and prayers for peace, compassion, strength, and wisdom far and wide. In the evening, thousands of butter lamps illuminate the plaza surrounding the stupa. Equally fascinating are the surrounding streets, lined with Tibetan monasteries and shops selling religious art, Tibetan handicrafts, and traditional Nepali items.

Stay overnight in Kathmandu.

Nyatapola Temple, Nepal

If you have an interest in Bhutan's national animal, you also can visit the Motithang Takin Preserve.  There, you can observe the unique creature that is said to have been created by the legendary Drukpa Kunley (Divine Madman). According to legend, Drukpa Kunley fashioned the takin with the head of a goat and the body of a cow.

The day concludes with a visit to the  Thimphu weekend Market , also known as the Centenary Farmers Market, the biggest and brightest in the country. As you wander through the aisles, you'll be surrounded by a kaleidoscope of colors, sounds, and smells that make the market come alive. You might find yourself drawn to the sections overflowing with fresh fruits and vegetables, or perhaps the aromatic spices and herbs will catch your attention. Don't miss the opportunity to taste some of the local cheese or the array of dried meats, a staple in the Bhutanese diet. Beyond food, explore the areas dedicated to traditional Bhutanese textiles and handicrafts. It's a chance to pick up souvenirs. If luck is on your side, you may even witness a thrilling game of archery in the  Changlingmithang stadium . (Note: The weekend market usually operates from Friday evening to Sunday. If you are unable to visit during this time, we can arrange for an alternative market. )

Overnight in Thimphu and get ready for your next day's trip.

Bhutan Post Office, Thimphu

Today, you will travel from  Thimphu to Punakha  via Dochula Pass (74km, about2.5 hours). This trip is more than just a drive; it is a voyage through changing altitudes and diverse landscapes, offering a visual spectacle. Starting from the higher altitude and cooler climate of Thimphu (2,300m), the drive takes you along the national highway, ascending through the majestic  Dochula Pass  (3,120m). Upon crossing the pass, you'll descend into the warm and verdant  Punakha Valley  (1,330m).

En route, you will stop at  Dochula Pass  (Dochu La Pass), renowned as one of the most beautiful mountain passes in Bhutan. If weather permits, you will be treated to a breathtaking  panoramic view of the Himalayas,  including Bhutan’s highest mountain peak,  Mt. Gangkar Puensum  (7,570m). You will have the delightful option to savor the view while enjoying a cup of coffee in the picturesque cafeteria. At the  Dochu La Pass  summit, you will encounter the  108 memorial chortens  (Buddhist shrines) and clusters of prayer flags fluttering in the wind, creating an ambiance of tranquility and spirituality. These chortens (stupas), known as  Druk Wangyal Khang Zhang Chortens , were constructed as a memorial to honor the Bhutanese soldiers who lost their lives in the battle against Assamese insurgents from India, and also as an offering for global peace.

Then, your journey continues towards Punakha. Along the way, you will take a  hike to Chimi Lhakhang  (Chime Lhakhang), which is highly recommended as a  culture shock tour . As you stroll through rice paddies and a charming settlement adorned with painted houses and numerous craft shops, you will eventually reach Chimi Lhakhang ( Fertility Temple ). Constructed by the  cousin of Drukpa Kunley , the temple was built to commemorate the victory of  Drukpa Kunley  (Mad Saint & Divine Madman) over the demon of Dochu La using his "magic thunderbolt of wisdom "(phallus). That is why you can see the symbol of the phallus scattered throughout.  Lama Drukpa Kunley  was adored by the local people due to his unconventional teaching methods of Buddhism, which involved singing, humor, and an exaggerated manner often intertwined with sexual overtones.  Chime Lhakhang  is renowned as a  sanctuary of fertility , and many childless women sought blessings from the lamas at the monastery. It is believed that these couples often find success in conceiving soon after their visit. If you are lucky, you may encounter the monks there blessing pilgrims or women who wish to conceive by tapping their heads with a 25cm wooden phallus. In Bhutan, it is common for local people to utilize the phallus symbol to ward off the evil eye and deter malicious gossip.

After that, drive to  Punakha city , the old capital of Bhutan before 1955. It is located at the confluence of the  Mo Chhu  (Mother River) and  Pho Chhu  (Father River). Dominating the river junction is the magnificent  Punakha Dzong , the winter residence of Je Khenpo (head abbot of Bhutan) and about 1,000 monks. Occasionally, you'll spot monks draped in red robes passing by, their rhythmic chanting and prayers echoing in the air.  Punakha Dzong , the second oldest and second largest Dzong in Bhutan serving administrative and monastic functions holds a legendary tale. It is said that  Guru Rinpoche  (Padmasambhava) prophesied the arrival of a person named Namgyal built a Dzong on a hill resembling an elephant. In 1637,  Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyel , the unifier of Bhutan, received a divine vision guiding him to construct a Dzong at this site. All of Bhutan’s kings have been crowned here and In 2011, the Dzong bore witness to  the royal wedding ceremony  of His Majesty Jigme Namgyel Wangchuck, the 5th King of Bhutan, as he married Queen Jetsun Pema. As the  most beautiful Dzong in Bhutan , if you visit in April, you won’t miss the stunning violet  blossoms of the jacaranda tree  outside Punakha Dzong. The jacaranda typically blooms from late March to early May, During this time, the grounds of Punakha Dzong transform into a magical carpet of purple under the clear blue skies, creating a truly breathtaking sight. If you visit during the  Punakha Tshechu Festival , you can enjoy the mesmerizing masked dances and witness the exhibition of a large thangka depicting the  Zhabdrung  (Shabdrung, the father of Bhutan) once a year. You can have fun with locals who flood here dressed in Bhutan’s national attire, with men wearing Gho and women wearing Kira.

After crossing the  Bazam Bridge , you can walk inside the  Punakha Dzong  and take your time to admire this stunning example of  Bhutanese Dzong architecture  which was built of stone, pounded mud, and a considerable amount of timber ( without nails, written plans, or designs ). There is a six-story central tower called  utse  standing in the yard of the Punakha Dzong. As the highest architecture within the Dzong, utse houses the most sacred temples and shrines and contains important religious artifacts, thangkas, statues, and texts. This Dzong has  three docheys (courtyards)  instead of the usual two.  The first (northern) courtyard  is for administrative functions and houses a huge white Victory Chorten and  Bodhi tree .  The second courtyard  houses the monastic quarters and is separated from the first by the utse. In this courtyard, there are two halls; one of  Ugyen Wangchuck  (the King of Bhutan) and another hall where the King was decorated in 1905 with the Order of the Knight Commander of the Indian Empire by John Claude White. In  the third (southernmost) courtyard  is the temple where the remains of the  Pema Lingpa  (a treasure revealer, Five Terton Kings) and  Shabdrung  (founder of Tshechu Festival and Bhutan National Dress) are preserved. At the south end, there is the kunrey, or "hundred-pillar" assembly hall with exceptional murals that depict  the life of Buddha .

Overnight in Punakha and get ready for your next day's trip.

Optional Punakha Experience :

Punakha Rafting:  You have the option to go rafting in the Po Chu and Mo Chu rivers, offering unique views of the Punakha Dzong that are not possible from land.

Dochula Pass, Bhutan

Today, as you cross  Punakha Suspension Bridge,  one of Bhutan’s longest pedestrian suspension bridges (160m), you will be rewarded with breathtaking views of the lush  Punakha Valley  and the glacier-fed Po Chu River below. After that, you will walk alongside terraced rice paddies and follow a trail to  Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten  (hike 1 hour or less). Along the way, you may encounter farmers working in the fields, either manually or with the help of an ox and plow.

The  Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten (Stupa)  was built in 1990 by the  Queen Mother,  Ashi Tsering Yangdon Wangchuck, who is the mother of the 5th King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck. The purpose of its construction was to ward off evil forces and bring peace to Bhutan and the world. Unlike typical stupas, the Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten is dedicated to  the protective deities in Bhutanese culture . Each floor of the chorten pays tribute to different protective deities. This chorten exemplifies a harmonious blend of Bhutanese art, architecture, and traditions. It took Bhutanese carpenters, painters, and sculptors 9 years to complete this distinctive Bhutan-style pagoda. Inside  Khamsum Yulley,  you can admire the sculptures, and as you continue climbing the steep stairs, you will reach the top level. From there, you can venture onto the roof of Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten and enjoy  expansive views of the Punakha . The landscape undergoes a dramatic transformation with the changing seasons, with lush green rice paddies in the summer transforming into captivating golden fields in the autumn.

Then, make your way  back to Paro  (110km, about 3.5h) via Dochu La Pass. In Paro, you will have the opportunity to visit Tamchog Lhakhang, Paro Dzong, and the Bhutan National Museum.

On the way back to Paro, you won’t miss the famous  Tamchog Lhakhang  (Tachog Lhakhang), situated by the Paro river. There, you will have the opportunity to walk across a unique iron chain bridge adorned with colorful fluttering prayer flags. Both the Lhakhang and the iron bridge were constructed by the revered saint  Thangthong Gyalpo  (1385 - 1464), who was renowned as the  Iron Bridge Maker . Take delight in exploring his historic architectural creations that have stood the test of time.

After reach Paro, you can pay a visit to Paro Dzong and Bhutan National Museum.  Paro Dzong  (Rinpung Dzong) is a magnificent fortress stands tall and proud, serving as a beacon of history and culture in Bhutan.  Rinpung Dzong  was constructed in 1646 by  Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal  (1594-1651), a pivotal figure in Bhutanese history who is revered as  the founder of the modern Bhutanese state  and  a national hero . His enduring legacy continues to shape the country's identity and cultural landscape. Located near the pristine  Paro Chu River , Paro Dzong can be accessed via a traditional wooden cantilever bridge, providing you breathtaking panoramic views of the enchanting  Paro Valley . If you hike a little further, you will reach the  Bhutan National Museum  (Ta Dzong), which holds the distinction of being  Bhutan's tallest building . Originally constructed in 1649 as a  watchtower  overlooking the Paro Dzong, it was later transformed into the  National Museum of Bhutan  in 1968. At the museum, you can immerse yourself in a rich collection of ancient artifacts such as pottery, armor, thangkas, masks, stamps, photographs, statues, costumes, relics, stone axes, and religious paintings.

After that, overnight in Paro.

Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten

This morning, you will enjoy the exciting  hiking tour to Tiger's Nest,  the landmark of Bhutan and the most famous holy monastery in the country. It is about a 12km drive (over 0.5 hours) from Paro City to the start point of the  Tiger's Nest  hike route.

Usually, it may take about 2.5 hours to reach  Tiger's Nest Monastery  (Paro Taktsang) on foot. The entire  Tiger's Nest Hike  takes around 5 to 6 hours, with about 2.6km of uphill trekking and about 2.6km of downhill walking. You have the option to rent a horse at the designated place if you prefer.  Riding a horse  (self-payment required) takes about 1.5 hours to reach the halfway point on the mountainside. From there, you need to say goodbye to your horse and hike for another 1.5 hours to reach the Tiger's Nest Monastery. At  the halfway point , there is a Taktsang Cafeteria where you can have a buffet lunch and enjoy coffee and tea. What is more, it is  the first viewpoint  where you can  look up Tiger's Nest Monastery , the incredible religious site of Buddhists. As the viewing position ascends, the outline of Tiger's Nest Monastery becomes increasingly clear. On the journey ahead, you can enjoy the hike in Bhutan’s forest and will see more and more  prayer flags  and prayer wheels, left behind by the  Bhutanese people  who come here to worship. You will also have a panoramic view of the beautiful  Paro Valley  below. If you visit in April, you will have the opportunity to see the high-altitude  rhododendrons blooming , creating a stunning display of red clouds amidst the mountains.

Then, you will stand right opposite the  Taktsang Goemba  ( Tiger's Nest Monastery ) and admire Bhutan's most iconic cultural landmark, which is renowned as one of the world's top ten super monasteries. The  Tiger's Nest  (3,120m) is situated on the side of a cliff at a height of 900m above the Paro Valley (2,270m). According to legend, the Indian sage  Guru Padmasambhava  ( Guru Rimpoche , the founder of the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism and the builder of the first monastery in Tibet - Samye Monastery) arrived at the location of Tiger's Nest Monastery in the 8th century. It is said that he  rode a tigress  and subdued demons before spending  3 months meditating in the mountain caves  here. This eventually led to the formation of the present-day Tiger's Nest Monastery. Throughout history, this place has been considered  a sacred site by Buddhist luminaries . However, it wasn't until 1692 that the current structure of Tiger's Nest Monastery took shape. In 1998, a devastating fire caused significant damage, but it was reconstructed in 2005, closely resembling the original architectural design. If you are interested you can hike into the monastery to explore more (no photo inside). Today, Tiger's Nest Monastery, one of  the most visited tourist attractions in Bhutan , is revered as the holiest pilgrimage site for Bhutanese people to visit at least once in a lifetime.

After completing the Tiger's Nest hike, you will proceed to  Drukgyal Dzong , where you will have the opportunity to catch a glimpse of  Mount Jomolhari (7,570m).  Known as the "Mountain Goddess" and  the tallest mountain in Bhutan , Mt Jomolhari is considered a sacred abode for deities and spirits, earning the title of " Sacred Mountain ". Know as the  Fortress of the Victorious Drukpa , Drukgyal Dzong was believed to have been built in 1646 by  Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal  who is the unifier and  founder of the Bhutanese nation-state . The building was used as an administrative center until 1951 when a fire caused by a butter lamp destroyed it. In April 2016, to celebrate the birth of the Dragon Prince, Gyalsey His Royal Highness Jigme Namgyel Wangchuck, as well as to commemorate the arrival of Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel to Bhutan in 1616 AD and the birth year of Guru Rinpoche, then Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay announced that the dzong will be restored and reinstated to its former glory upon the command of His Majesty King Jigme Khesar.

Then, it is time to visit  Kyichu Lhakhang , also known as the Temple of the Thousand-armed and Thousand-eyed Avalokiteshvara. It is one of the  108 Buddhist temples  built by  King Songtsen Gampo  in the 7th century (around 659 AD), and it is believed to have been constructed to subdue the left leg of the Tibetan witch. Kyichu Lhakhang is also one of  the oldest Tibetan Buddhist temples in Bhutan  and serves as a venue for important celebrations of the Bhutanese royal family. In the main hall of Kyichu Lhakhang, you can see the revered statue of  an eight-year-old Shakyamuni Buddha , believed to have been created during the same period as the Jowo statue in the Jokhang Temple in Lhasa, Tibet. It is considered  a national treasure of the Kingdom of Bhutan . Apart from housing many precious historical artifacts and Buddhist scriptures, the temple also enshrines the relic stupa of Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche (1910-1991), a renowned master of the Nyingma tradition. Additionally, there is a piece of iron chain forged by  Tangtong Gyalpo , who was the former head of the four major Tibetan Buddhist schools and is known as the  Iron Bridge Living Buddha  and the father of Tibetan opera.

If time permits and you are interested, you can also  visit a local farmhouse , which provides a fascinating glimpse into the lifestyle of a farmer. Finally, head back to Paro for an overnight stay.

Optional Bhutan Paro Experiences:

Bhutan Traditional Hot Stone Bath (1 hour).

Lighting butter lamps for blessings at Kyichu Lhakhang (108 lamps).

Kind Reminds:

The best time to visit Tiger's Nest is from March to May and from October to December. After noon, the monastery will be hidden in the shadow of the cliffs, so it's recommended to depart early if you want to capture good photos.

Tiger's Nest offers horse riding services to go uphill, but the horse ride is only available up to a designated point. From there, you still need to hike to reach the monastery. When descending, you must walk the entire way as horse riding services are not provided.

Mobile phones and backpacks are not allowed inside Tiger's Nest Monastery. Personal belongings can be stored at the entrance. If you wish to light butter lamps, make sure to have some cash ready before storing your belongings.

Along the way, you may encounter stray dogs. Please be mindful, give them space, and avoid disturbing them.

It doesn’t matter who you are, the Taj Mahal will leave you awe-struck with the morning light shimmering off its white marble surface. The highlights keep coming as you take a motorised rickshaw tour, a truly fun and Intrepid way to see the monuments of Agra. Later, you'll also visit Akbar's Mausoleum – a beautiful sandstone and marble tomb built for the greatest of the Mughal emperors.

Agra is also home to one of the finest looking forts in India. This morning you’ll enter the dark red sandstone stronghold of Agra Fort – part fortress, part palace and part prison – and search through throne rooms and tiny but incredibly decorated mosques. Later, travel by air-conditioned train from Agra to Jhansi (approximately 3 hours). Upon arrival in Jhansi, travel through traditional rural Indian landscapes to reach the beautiful town of Orchha on the banks of the Betwa River (approximately 45 minutes). Here you’ll have the opportunity to uncover a very different side of India. Initially a hunting area, Orchha has changed very little over the centuries. Despite its small size, it is filled with many beautiful temples and palaces built here in the 16th century by the ruling Bundelas clan. This evening, witness the Ram Raja Temple puja (prayer) ceremony at the shrine at the heart of the city. Stay in a restored heritage property tonight.

  • Orchha - Leader-led walking tour
  • Orchha - Ram Raja Temple ceremony
  • Agra - Agra Fort

Today you'll visit the stunning Orchha Palace, built by Bir Sing Deo for his friend Jehangir, the great Mughal ruler. Take note of the grand Iwans (domes) that were built large enough to allow the movement of war elephants. You’ll also make a stop at Taragram - a paper making factory that enables local tribal women to work outside the realm usually afforded to them. The paper is crafted from wood pulp and recycled clothing.

  • Orchha - Orchha Palace
  • Orchha - Taragram visit

Today you'll get to soak up more of the unique atmosphere of Orchha, and excitingly you'll get to soak up the local flavours too. Learn about the local cuisine, its ingredients, and how it's prepared, in a cooking demonstration with our local friends. In not too long, you’ll get to taste the unforgettable results. This evening you’ll return to Jhansi and board an overnight train to Prayagraj (Allahabad) (approximately 10 hours) – the starting point for your Ganges boat journey.

  • Overnight Sleeper Train (1 night)
  • Orchha - Cooking demonstration

Sleeper trains are usually comfortable and air-conditioned (sometimes fan-cooled), and are a great way to travel long distances and still get maximum time in each place. Sheets, pillow, and blanket are provided but some people prefer to bring their own sleeping sheet. Please note you may be sharing with locals in a same/mixed gender situation.

Arrive in Allahabad and transfer to the Ganges (approximately 2 hours) by small riverboats for a cruise down the river. You'll experience the sacred River Ganges, the lifeblood of millions of Indian people, with a boat cruise through the heart of rural India. A support crew will be on hand as you cruise down this iconic waterway, passing village communities and viewing river life as it goes on around you. The boats are equipped with life jackets, the deck has mattresses and cushions to relax on, and it’s all covered with a cloth roof for sun protection. Arrive at your campsite and relax riverside, read a book or play some cricket. Watch the sun go down and eat a delicious vegetarian meal prepared by the boatmen.

  • Camping (with basic facilities) (1 night)
  • River Ganges - Boat trip & camping

Tents are twin share with mattresses and blankets provided. It gets cold in winter, so a sleeping bag is recommended if travelling at this time. There is a squat toilet tent, and no showers available. Lunch, dinner, and breakfast are provided during your time camping. Water and soft drinks are available to purchase, but no alcohol is allowed here, as the Ganges is a sacred place. Please note that due to high water levels on the River Ganges and the associated safety concerns, the boat trip won't operate during the monsoon or other times of heavy rainfall. Departures affected by such safety concerns will be communicated during the trip by your leader – it's difficult to know well in advance how much rain there's likely to be at any point in time. In these cases, an extra night will be spent in Varanasi including a visit to the temple complex of Sarnath – the place where Lord Buddha gave his first sermon.

Leaving your boats at Chunar, transfer by private vehicle to Varanasi (approximately 2 hours). This is one of holiest cities around; the ultimate destination for Hindu pilgrims who travel from far and wide to experience this spiritual city. Overflowing with temples, shrines and devotees, there’s no doubt it’s one of the most amazing cities. Set off on a walking tour of the oldest part of the city, bustling with tourists and priests, and see different rituals being performed. Wander through the Old City with its maze of narrow alleyways packed full of small shops and stalls, and lumbering cows. This evening, soak up the unique magical atmosphere of a candle flower ceremony as the sun sets.

  • Varanasi - Sunset candle flower ceremony
  • Varanasi - Leader-led Old City walking tour

Today starts early with a sunrise boat ride on the Ganges, where you can watch the light gradually illuminate the many ghats and temples along the river as you pass. The rest of the day is free for you to use as you like. There’s an option to take a trip to nearby Sarnath – one of the four main Buddhist pilgrimage destinations. The site is where Buddha preached his message of the path to enlightenment and features a number of stupas and museums to explore. Or perhaps visit Ram Nagar Fort – a crumbling 17th-century fort and palace on the eastern bank of the Ganges, that’s the ancestral home of the Maharaja of Banaras. Alternatively, the day can be spent exploring the laneways and alleys behind the ghats, picking up some examples of the excellent local silk industry, or perfecting yoga in this most chakra-balancing of places.

  • Varanasi - Sunrise Ganges boat trip
  • Varanasi - Ram Nagar Fort - INR250
  • Varanasi - Sarnath - INR315

Today, wave goodbye to India and say namaste to Nepal, as you cross the border at Gorakhpur. Though there’s always something to look at out the windows, it’s a good idea to have some other entertainment on hand for the long day of travelling ahead (approximately 8-10 hours including stops). For groups of less than five, you will travel by car and for bigger groups by bus. On entering Nepal, take a private bus to your hotel in Lumbini (approximately 1 hour). This is no ordinary border town, but the birthplace of Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism, and one of his four holy places of pilgrimage. It's said in the Parinibbana Sutta that Buddha identified the sites as those of his birth, enlightenment, first discourse, and death. You’ll visit the beautiful Ashoka Pillars and hop on cycle rickshaws to the Maya Devi Temple, the actual site where Lord Buddha is thought to have been born.

  • Lumbini - Heritage Park

Continue your journey by private vehicle through the Terai to the Amaltari Madhyavarti village homestay – your home for the night. A well-known Indigenous group in Nepal, the Tharu community who live here are known for their distinctive culture and lifestyle. When you arrive, have lunch in the community with your group, get to know some of the locals and then enjoy some free time to freshen up. After, you’ll head out on a 4WD drive to the lake to enjoy some afternoon tea. Learn about village life in the community over dinner tonight and relish in a homecooked, traditional meal made by the locals.

  • Homestay (1 night)

Over monsoon season (May to August) the roads to Amaltari can sometimes be rendered impassable due to swollen rivers and flooding. If you are travelling over this period there is a high chance your group will travel straight to Chitwan National Park today. After arriving at our lodge we will explore the local village by bike. In the evening, prepare for tomorrow’s exploration of the park with a presentation on the park's history, flora, and fauna.

This morning, go on a village walk, guided by a member of the Tharu community around the village. See the architecture and structure of the Indigenous homes around the village by daylight, as well as the local farms, where locals cultivate their crops to sustain their community’s livelihood and economy. Connect with the daily way of life here through cultural immersion and storytelling and learn about their customs and values from the locals themselves. After, say goodbye to your hosts, and head for your lodge in Chitwan National Park via Twenty Thousand Lakes (Bis Hajaar Tal) via private vehicle (2 hours). Nepal’s second-largest natural wetland, this beautiful reserve area is a maze of small lakes that teems with wildlife. Home to numerous crocodiles, this is one of the park’s best areas for birdwatching, with hundreds of species using it as a migratory route stop. If you’re lucky, you might spot an Indian rhino.

  • Lodge (1 night)
  • Chitwan - Village Bike Tour

While we respect each individual’s decisions while travelling, Intrepid does not include elephant rides or unnatural performance activities on any itinerary, and we recommend you bypass these activities should they be offered to you during your stay. Professional wildlife conservation and animal welfare organisations, including the World Animal Protection (formerly the World Society for protection of Animals), advise that contrary to common belief, captive elephants remain wild animals and despite good intentions, unfortunately, many venues are unable to provide the appropriate living conditions elephants require and this ultimately impacts their well-being. While there is some merit in the argument that the money that you pay for the activity goes towards keeping the elephants and their mahouts employed, we know that it also fuels demand for elephants to be captured in the wild or captive-bred. We thank you for your support in improving the welfare of these majestic creatures.

After breakfast, take a walk to the Rapti River from where you’ll be taken on a boat/jeep safari through the national park. Enjoy some brilliantly-coloured-bird watching along the Rapti River and a picnic lunch. Keep your eyes peeled for gharials – this fish-eating crocodile has long been hunted for the supposed aphrodisiac qualities of its snout. Learn more about them when you drop by the crocodile breeding centre. Once back at your accommodation, there’ll be time to relax or to take part in a number of optional activities offered by the park. Tonight, you’ll be treated to a cultural performance by the locals.

  • Chitwan National Park - Park Entry
  • Chitwan - Canoe trip
  • Chitwan - Canoe safari, Bird Watching walk or Jeep safari
  • Chitwan NP - Tharu cultural performance

From October to June, when jeep safaris resume, you will travel by boat part of the way before meeting drivers and touring the national park by vehicle (approximately 3-4 hours),

Today you'll journey by bus from Chitwan to Nepal's capital, Kathmandu (approximately 6 hours). This is a ride that takes in all the sights that define Nepal – iridescent rice terraces, deep gorges, fast-flowing rivers, and looming mountains. Kathmandu is a mixture of ancient architecture and modern development and, with its rich artistic and cultural heritage, it remains the legendary destination it has been for decades. Crowded markets and bazaars are the centre of Nepali life and the narrow streets are home to holy men, monks, bicycles, incense, goats, and sacred cows. Perhaps head out into Durbar Square, in front of the old royal palace and home to numerous beautiful temples and browse the stalls of merchant's wares.

  • Kathmandu - Durbar Square - NPR1000

Today you’ll head out to the ancient Swayambhunath Temple, known to tourists as the Monkey Temple and Kathmandu's most important Buddhist shrine. The sleepy, all-seeing Buddha eyes that stare out from the top have become the quintessential symbol of Nepal. You’ll also join the pilgrims at Bodhnath Stupa – the largest stupa in Nepal and the holiest Tibetan Buddhist temple outside Tibet. It's the centre of Tibetan culture in Kathmandu, rich in Buddhist symbolism, and you can observe Buddhist monks in prayer in the monasteries surrounding the stupa. You will also visit Pashupatinath – the most famous Hindu temple in the country – located on the banks of the holy Bagmati River. Here you will see Hindu holy men (sadhus) meditating and pilgrims bathing. There are also a number of optional activities to take advantage of if you have the time, including our Urban Adventures. Maybe take-off on a flight from Kathmandu airport to see some spectacular mountain scenery. Those who don't have the opportunity to go trekking can get panoramic views of the Himalayas in just an hour.

  • Kathmandu - Swayambhunath Temple
  • Kathmandu - Bodhnath Stupa
  • Kathmandu - Pashupatinath Temple
  • Kathmandu - Everest Scenic Flight (Including transfers) - USD240

Your adventure through Nepal and India ends today and you're free to leave the accommodation at any time.
