Jenni Fielding from Cruisemunmy.com did what I thought was almost impossible - compile a list of Carnival's all-time top 10 cruise directors. You can see the list at this link:  https://www.cruisemummy.co.uk/top-carnival-cruise-directors/

I thought it was well worth the time to read. It includes lots of details about each of the people picked.

About the list itself, I trust that few veterans here are going to be surprised at her #1. Each of her picks I've heard of and they have their fan clubs here and elsewhere. But I've had the pleasure of sailing with 12 different CDs, and NONE of them made the list. I guess I'm sorry to miss them, if I don't happen to catch them sometime in the future.

I really don't follow the CD's that much while on a ship. But I have met them all. CM has the order wrong though.  JH, sure. Donkey, number two, Dr E, (Good morning, Good morning) number three. Flying Scotchman number four.  The rest, well they're just the rest  😉

Saint Greg

My thought when I saw that yesterday was that can’t be Carnival’s top 10 of all-time. I’ve only been cruising 9 years but there’s no way 5 of their top 6 best cruise directors of all-time are current CDs. And 8 of their top 10 of all-time I could’ve cruised with in the past decade.

It looks like she did her favorite CDs from the last 10 years, wanted to add John Heald so changed it to all-time, and found one other older CD to throw in the 9 spot to make it look legit.

I think JH’s post this morning indicated he felt the same. Throwing out old CDs I’ve never heard of. Those are the names I’d expect to see on an all-time best CD list. That’s what I was hoping to get when I clicked on the article. Write-ups on old school CDs with just a couple of the current ones mixed in.

hard_eight

I wanted to choke Dr E the couple times we sailed with him... I found the reason I hated the guy so much was the Good Morning song. However, I was singing it for weeks upon return! Look forward to his return one day

Haha

I guess I'm strange.  I couldn't tell you the name of any CD over the past decade of sailings.  To me they are an annoyance I overlook selling bingo cards and such.

I am same as you. Last cruise on Celebration I decided to pay some attention the the CD (Lee?) and he wasn't too annoying but damned if he wasn't everywhere.

stobe1

The only CDs I care about are the annoying ones. I find Cookie to be like nails on a chalkboard to me everytime he makes an announcement. I actually wouldn't have expected to see his name on that list at all, much less as high up as he was.

He lives rent free in my head from the trauma lol. "This is your cousin C-C-C-C-Cookie".

Not a fan of Cam either. He isn't on this list, which is a good thing. That poor guy cant make a PA without screwing it up. I honestly genuinely felt bad for him.

That's the M.O. of most of their CDs, I've found. I'm comforted to know this hasn't changed.

Where is Jamie Dee?  She was absolutely fantastic.

It cracks me up to see how people on ship treat the CDs like celebrities. I just got off Panorama and Marty was pretty good. I just enjoyed watching people fawn all over him. 🤣

geovet

Jamie   De e Did retire from cruise work. She was a great cd and best friend onboard.

dmet0225

I immediately discounted that list when I saw Jen Baxter named as one of the 10 best.  Someone earlier commented about nails on a chalkboard.  That certainly fits my description of Jen.  We've had the unfortunate luck of having her on 2 of our cruises.

My favorite will always be Gary Hunter (M.S. Jubilee). He WAS the "fun squad".

mz-s

It only takes an internet connection and about $10 to be a blogger, folks. Take this person's "top 10" list for exactly what it's worth...absolutely nothing.

It's Cruise Critic. Can't we just comment on stupid stuff every once in a while? I don't think anyone on here took this as an end-all-be-all list that will make its way into Conde Nast Magazine or Forbes.

The list isn’t even considered if Mike Pack isn’t included. We never consider a CD when cruising, but Mike was BY FAR the best I’ve seen on 30+ cruises. Noonan is another amongst the top 5. Both were promoted to higher level positions, and for great reason. Dr. E was irritating, but lively. Other than on Carnival cruises, I could not name one CD.

gus1971

I always liked butch begovich. I thought donkey was annoying.

She was the CD on our first cruise on the Dream back in 2015 i think....  She was actually one of the first CD's who started the veterans tribute.  on that first cruise it was held in the piano bar, and it was standing room only.

KarmaCruisers

LOL! How did Jen from the poop cruise get on that list!?  I’ve been on two separate ships/itineraries with her and she’s honestly the most depressing CD ever.

Kyndall should have been higher..but then again I’ve not cruised with the ones above her (they may be better)

havanadaydreaming

havanadaydreaming

i really enjoyed Donkey, i thought he was fantastic.

my first was Butch and he set the bar high for all my future cruises.

i dont know any of the other eight listed however.   Well, i have read John Heald of course.  But never seen him in action.

It can also lead to controversies, as some directors have received negative feedback for their social media posts.

In today’s digital age, a strong social media presence is crucial for cruise directors to succeed in their role. Readers’ Thoughts and Favorites

Back in the day, my family and I went on a Carnival cruise and we still talk about how amazing our cruise director, Reverend Dr. E, was. He was energetic, personable, and always made sure everyone was having a good time. He made us feel like we were part of a big family and created some of our favorite memories from the trip.

From his hilarious jokes to his impressive dance moves, Reverend Dr. E truly made our cruise experience unforgettable. Although we had a great time with him, I’ve read some negative experiences from other guests about certain cruise directors.

It’s important to remember that everyone has different personalities and what one person finds entertaining, another may not. It’s always a good idea to check out the Carnival Cruise Director Schedule to see which cruise director will be on your ship and do a little research on them beforehand.

But overall, I think the cruise directors on Carnival do an excellent job of making sure their guests have a fun and memorable vacation.

List of Carnival Cruise Directors by Ship for August and September 2023

by Prof. Cruise · August 2, 2023

A cartoon "cruise director" with text that reads: List of Carnival cruise directors by ship for Aug and Sept 2023.

One of the most common questions I receive and see asked on cruise boards and social media sites is: Who will my cruise director be? To which there are always several follow up questions asked by new cruisers to the effect of: What the heck is a cruise director? Well I’m here to answer both of those questions! First…

What does a Cruise Director do?

Besides not sleep, smile through exhaustion and frustration, and dish out almost as many corny jokes as yours truly? Quite a lot! In fact, cruise directors are the most visible crew members onboard a cruise ship and often work up to 16 hours per day with no days off during their contract period (usually lasting around 4 months, but up to 9 months in some cases). While passengers will see them constantly out and about introducing shows, MC’ing activities and events, and interacting with guests, they are also responsible for behind-the-scenes scheduling and coordination of all entertainment and activities and certain safety protocols.

Many regular Carnival cruisers have a favorite cruise director they look forward to sailing with. So, let’s get to our second question, who will the cruise director be on my Carnival cruise?

Who will the Cruise Director be on my upcoming Carnival Cruise?

Wondering who the cruise director will be on your upcoming Carnival cruise? Find the list of cruise directors by ship for the months of August and September 2023 here.

Important notes: * There is usually a week of overlap in the contracts of a current cruise director and their replacement. So, if you’re booked on the last sailing of a certain cruise director, you may actually see more of their replacement who is gearing up to take over. I’ve noted the exact “sign-off” and “sign-on” dates during August and September for each cruise director where there is overlap. ** While I try my best to keep this up-to-date, schedules sometimes change at the last minute, so I can’t guarantee this will always be 100% accurate. If you need 100% certainty as to who your cruise director will be, I recommend asking John Heald, Carnival’s Brand Ambassador, via the “community” tab on his Facebook page a week or so before your sailing date. ***All photos courtesy of Carnival Cruise Line

Famed Carnival cruise director Matt Mitcham to take reader questions

Gene Sloan

One of the most popular cruise directors in the history of Carnival Cruise Line will be taking reader questions here at The Points Guy this week.

London-based Matt Mitcham, who announced on Aug. 26 in a Facebook post he was retiring from the line, is taking part in TPG's Ask the Expert series on Instagram.

We'll be posting an initial Instagram story with Mitcham later today on Monday, Sept. 7 on our Instagram account , and cruise fans who have a question about cruising for him will be able to leave it there. Questions can be submitted through the question sticker on the Instagram story or by sending us a direct message.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's new cruise newsletter.

Mitcham will be back on our Instagram account later in the week with answers to questions. Just be warned that, given the high volume of questions we expect, it's unlikely he'll be able to answer all of them.

Mitcham has been one of Carnival's star cruise directors for years, and he has a huge following among cruise fans. His Facebook account, where he posts regularly, has more than 100,000 followers -- a significant number for a cruise industry personality. He's big on Instagram, too.

Matt Mitcham

Up until the day he announced his retirement, Mitcham had been scheduled to become the cruise director of Carnival's new flagship, Mardi Gras , when it debuts in February .

Currently under construction at a shipyard in Turku, Finland, Mardi Gras will be one of the biggest cruise ships in the world when it arrives -- so big, it'll famously have room for a roller coaster on its top deck , a cruise industry first.

Mitcham has served as cruise director on several Carnival ships including Carnival Vista and Carnival Breeze. Known for his six-pack abs, shirtless selfies and effervescent personality, he was recently profiled in People magazine as the "hunky cruise director."

He was named the cruise world's best cruise director in 2019 by the cruise industry's leading magazine, Porthole.

"I am a whirlwind of emotions, from ecstatic to excited to sad to happy to nervous," Mitcham said when announcing his retirement on Facebook. He didn't say what he would do next.

"We've done a lot of talking over the past few months, and it's definitely time for me to move on to my next adventure," Mitcham said.

The Facebook video of Mitcham announcing his retirement has been watched by more than 164,000 people. Nearly 3,000 fans have left comments.

However, a word of caution for all the eager planners out there: while this schedule is a beacon, it’s also fluid. Adjustments can and do happen. A unique aspect is the occasional overlap, where passengers might be treated to a duo of cruise directors. Imagine two maestros! But rest assured, one will always be at the helm.

For those sentimental souls (and aren’t we all a bit?), if a particular cruise director has ever made you laugh a tad harder or dance a bit wilder, this schedule can be your guide. John Heald carnival cruise director

John “The Brit With Wit” Heald : Oh, Johnny boy! No, he’s not the singer of a melodramatic song; he’s the legend with over three decades under his belt at Carnival. While he might have traded in his cruise director hat for the glittery tiara of a “Brand Ambassador”, his unmistakable British humor still reigns supreme.

If you’re cruising around on the ‘www’, hoping to spot John’s cruise director schedule, brace yourself for disappointment. But hey, the silver lining – he’s just one click away on his uproarious Facebook Page, where he’s practically the agony aunt for Carnival enthusiasts.

Leon Smith carnival cruise director

Leon “Mr. Electricity” Smith: 20 years and counting! Leon isn’t just a cruise director; he’s Carnival’s in-house energy drink. With a personality that could rival a bolt of lightning, he’s the human defibrillator ensuring no one’s fun levels flatline. Got cruise blues? Leon’s the man with the tunes!

Alex Siegler cruise director

Alex “The People’s Champ” Siegler : Roll out the red carpet because the ‘Favorite Cruise Director’ – as per several publications – is here. Alex doesn’t just cruise; he builds bridges (not literally) with every passenger, ensuring that every interaction is more memorable than the last. Connecting with him is like finding Wi-Fi in the middle of the ocean – rare and delightful!

Carnival Cruise director Dustin Gabriel

Dustin “Mr. Party Starter” Gabriel: If enthusiasm were contagious, Dustin would be patient zero. Serving on a myriad of Carnival ships, he’s the flame that sets the party on fire and ensures it blazes all night. When Dustin’s onboard, even the ship’s anchor wishes it could dance!

Lee Mason

Lee “Jester from Manchester” Mason: Now, here’s a fellow who can probably make a fish laugh underwater. Lee’s blend of humor ensures that there’s never a dull moment onboard. If keeping passengers entertained were an Olympic sport, Lee would be leaving with a trunk full of gold medals. Our director never misses to shoot a vlog or a chance to entertain.

Jake Miller - The Cruise Maestro

Jake “The Cruise Maestro” Miller: Jake’s not just a name; it’s a brand in the Carnival universe. With accolades like ‘Favorite Cruise Director’ by several journals, Jake is the pied piper of fun, turning every cruise event into an electrifying concert. With Jake, every day is Mardi Gras!

So, the next time you’re on board, look out for these icons. They don’t just set the course; they are the course to unparalleled fun!

Does the carnival cruise director schedule change?

Certainly, various factors can lead to changes in the cruise director’s schedule at Carnival Cruise Line. These may include unforeseen circumstances, internal reshuffling, or personal commitments. While the cruise line aims for consistency in guest experience, adjustments are sometimes necessary. However, passengers are kept informed, and a roster of skilled directors is always ready to step in.

How long is a cruise directors contract?

Cruise Directors on Carnival typically sign contracts lasting 4 to 6 months, although this can vary based on experience and ship itinerary. Once a contract ends, they usually take a break on land to recharge. The duration and cyclical nature of their work ensure they remain energetic and fresh for each stint.

Port of Seattle Approves 10-Year Agreement with Carnival Corporation

  • June 25, 2024

Carnival Corp. ships in Seattle

The Port of Seattle Commission today approved a 10-year preferential berthing agreement with Carnival Corporation, per a statement, which includes Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Holland America Line, and Cunard brands continuing to homeport in Seattle for the Alaska cruise season.

The long-term agreement supports the port’s path to work with partners to achieve its zero-emission sustainability goals, along with providing local economic development opportunities and boosting the economic impact of cruise in the region, the port said in a statement.

The agreement sets a 10-year term (2024 – 2033), with a mutually agreeable option to extend for five more years (2034 – 2038). This agreement builds on prior agreements between the Port of Seattle and Carnival Corporation, adding ambitious environmental, sustainability, and social dimensions that benefit the greater Seattle region and helping to accelerate work underway.

Key elements of the long-term agreement in support of economic investment and sustainability includes:

  • Bringing in an anticipated $186 million in revenue and a minimum 550,000 revenue passengers annually: This would be the total anticipated revenue over 10 years; it could grow to $273 million if extended to the full 15 years.
  • Advancing the Port’s 2027 shore power goals: Carnival Corporation has been the leader on shore power in Seattle, having installed the equipment almost 20 years ago. To help the Port realize its ambition to have all ships at all cruise berths plug in by 2027, Carnival Corporation will seek commercial agreements with other cruise companies to plug in their ships to Carnival Corporation’s shore power assets at Terminal 91. The company’s vessels represented 100% of the shore power connections at the Port of Seattle in 2023, with 102 vessel calls.
  • Piloting the use of biofuel in cruise ship operation: The Port and Carnival Corporation will collaborate on a non-fossil fuel demonstration project and study to identify the end-to-end challenges and opportunities for using sustainable maritime fuels at scale in Seattle. The learnings will support other work in the sector to transition to alternative fuels.
  • Developing a responsible sourcing pilot program: Carnival Corporation will accelerate its local sourcing efforts to partner with local suppliers. Working with the Port, it will develop a pilot program for Seattle that promotes and supports small, diverse, disadvantaged, local, and tribal suppliers. Notably, the pilot program will also focus on building the capability of key suppliers to help create benefits beyond cruising.
  • Promoting overnight stays in Seattle surrounding cruise reservations: Carnival Corporation’s cruise lines will seek ways to further promote and encourage their guests to stay in Seattle before and after their cruise to help drive greater economic impact for the city and region.
  • Supporting educational and workforce development with maritime not-for-profits: Carnival Corporation will build on existing relationships by working with educators to support curriculum development, experiential field-based learning opportunities, and internships where appropriate to help build the maritime workforce pipeline in the region.

“This long-term agreement provides economic certainty for the Port and local businesses who depend upon cruise, while also strengthening our partnership,” said Port of Seattle Executive Director Steve Metruck. “Carnival Corporation has been a valuable partner for constant innovation on environmental sustainability and expanding economic opportunity. We appreciate their support for these shared goals and are eager to get to work on the commitments in this agreement.”

“Our guests love Seattle’s stunning natural beauty, urban charm, and eclectic assortment of attractions, and as our gateway to Alaska, one of our top markets globally. The Port of Seattle has long been a valued partner in our mutual ongoing success,” said Josh Weinstein, chief executive officer of Carnival Corporation & plc. “For the past 20 years, we have worked closely with the Port of Seattle to pioneer shore-power and secure the cruise industry’s role as a vital economic engine for the region. We are proud to continue our tradition of teamwork with this new agreement that will help further our economic, social, and environmental contributions to the region.”

In 2006, the Port of Seattle, through investments by Carnival Corporation, became the first home port in North America to offer shore power at two cruise berths, and today 66% of all cruise calls to the Port are equipped to plug in.

The Port continues to work in partnership with cruise ports in Alaska, Victoria, BC, and Vancouver, BC, and the cruise industry to explore the world’s first cruise-focused Green Corridor from Seattle to Alaska, using innovative decarbonization strategies.

As a part of the agreement, Carnival Corporation will provide data that will feed into  the Port’s cruise dashboard  to track passenger, environmental, and economic impact metrics. That data will be added to the current 2023 information as it becomes available.

In 2023 Carnival Corporation brands brought 140 ship calls to Seattle, representing almost half of the Port’s cruise calls. In 2024 Carnival Corporation has six ships committed to the Seattle market, with the number growing to seven ships in 2025, all shore power capable.

For one, as I said just days ago, companies like  Norwegian Cruise Lines  (NYSE: NCLH ) report record bookings thanks to booming demand.  Carnival  (NYSE: CCL ) says it’s “capturing more guests than ever before.”  Royal Caribbean  (NYSE: RCL ) is hiring thousands to staff its ships and private destinations to meet demand.

Two, according to JPMorgan , the cruise industry could capture 3.8% of the $1.9 trillion global vacation market by 2028 – which may be lowballing it. The firm notes the number of cruise passengers could grow to about 35.7 million this year, which is 6% higher than in 2019.

“Cruise operators are overhauling their offerings in order to appeal to consumers. Key operators are investing in new hardware, notably mega-ships and private destinations. This is driving more eyeballs to the industry, accelerating new-to-cruise acquisition,” they added.

Three, boats are being filled fast. “We’re getting close to the point where we’ll soon be taking more bookings for ’25 than we are for 2024,” Royal Caribbean Group CEO Jason Liberty told investors during a late-April earnings call, adding the company is also taking bookings for 2026.

That being said, it just makes sense to invest in cruise stocks, including:

Royal Caribbean ( RCL )

The last time I highlighted an opportunity in Royal Caribbean,  I said , “It’s just starting to bounce from support at $145, where it’s still a buy. Near term, I’d like to see RCL initially retest its prior high of $157.50, which shouldn’t be a problem with surging cruise bookings.”

At the time, RCL traded at around $149. Now at $154.41, it’s still a buy as it pivots higher.

Earnings have also been solid, as expected. Adjusted earnings per share of $1.77 beat estimates by $0.46. Revenue of $3.73 billion – up 29.2% year over year – beat by $38.9 million. It also hiked its EPS guidance to a new range of $2.65 to $2.75 compared to estimates of $2.37.

JPMorgan also raised its price target on RCL to $175 with an overweight rating. Analysts at Argus also raised their price target on RCL to $172 with a buy rating. All thanks to its optimism over the company’s financial prospects following a spike in occupancy rates.

Carnival ( CCL )

Recent weakness cruise stocks to buy, like Carnival, is another hot opportunity.

With stronger demand and higher occupancy rates, Carnival numbers have been solid.

In its first quarter, revenue hit a record first-quarter high of $5.4 billion. Deposits jumped to $7 billion in the quarter. Adjusted EBITDA more than doubled year over year to $871 million. Even its loss per share narrowed from $0.55 last year to $0.17. Moving forward, I expect for numbers to sail even higher with explosive, growing demand for cruise vacations.

In its second quarter earnings report – out this morning – the company’s EPS of 11 cents beat by 13 cents. Revenue of $5.78 billion, up 17.7% year over year beat by $90 million. Total customer deposits for the quarter came in at $8.3 billion (an all-time high). The company also raised its forecast thanks to strong demand.

In fact, it now expects 2024 adjusted profit per share of about $1.18, compared with its earlier forecast of 98 cents. It also forecast an adjusted profit of $1.15 per share for the third quarter. Analysts had expected a profit of $1.10.

Norwegian Cruise Line ( NCLH )

Another one of the top cruise stocks to buy on weakness is Norwegian Cruise Line. After gapping from about $18 to $16.18, NCLH is just starting to pivot higher. Last trading at $17.40, I’d like to see it initially retest $18.50 again shortly.

Helping, analysts at  Truist just upgraded NCLH to a buy rating with a price target of $21. The firm noted it’s “time to get back onboard NCLH” and that there is still plenty of “attractive upside potential” with the stock.

Deutsche Bank , JPMorgan, Wells Fargo , Stifel , Goldman Sachs , UBS and Citi raised their price targets on NCLH, too. Plus, company director Zillah Byng-Thorne just bought 13,360 shares for about $220,440. Even Jim Simons’ Renaissance Technologies fund recently picked up 252,900 shares of NCLH at the end of March.

Again, just as we’ve said with Carnival and Royal Caribbean, use weakness as an opportunity. With greater demand for cruises, it should be smooth sailing ahead for these companies.

A cruise line for every type of traveler: How to choose the right one for you

top 10 carnival cruise directors

  • Cruise lines have their own identities and areas of focus, and some lend themselves more to certain vacation types than others.
  • Royal Caribbean International, Norwegian Cruise Line and Disney Cruise Line are solid options for families.
  • Aurora Expeditions, Celebrity Cruises and Silversea Cruises offer trips with a spirit of exploration at their core.

No matter what kind of vacation you're planning , there's likely a cruise for you.

Whether you want to spend your trip kayaking and scuba diving or prefer to lounge on a sun deck sipping a cocktail, cruise lines have a wide range of offerings. But not every line or ship is right for every passenger.

Cruise brands have their own identities and areas of focus, and some lend themselves more to certain vacation types than others (amenities can also vary from ship to ship within the same line). Here's what to know:

Best cruise line for families

◾ Royal Caribbean International ships have an array of onboard offerings for kids and adults. For example, the line's most recent addition, Icon of the Seas, has been billed as the ultimate family vacation .

The vessel – the largest cruise ship in the world – has an entire neighborhood designed for young families, a large water park and activities ranging from a FlowRider surf simulator to Crown's Edge, where guests can walk more than 150 feet above the ocean. The line's Bahamas private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay, offers plenty of thrills and places to chill , too.

◾ Norwegian Cruise Line also offers a range of activities like free-fall dry slides, go-kart tracks, and high-caliber stage shows. Disney Cruise Line draws on a huge catalog of stories to bring magic to life on the water, with character appearances, themed dining and special events like Marvel Day at Sea .

◾ Carnival Cruise Line and MSC Cruises also cater to families, and Princess Cruises and Holland America Line are solid options for multigenerational travelers. Mainstream cruise lines generally have kids clubs that are included in the fare, as well.

Best cruise line for adventure and expeditions

Adventure seekers may want to consider expedition ships and lines that offer sailings to less common destinations such as Antarctica .

◾ Aurora Expeditions offers a range of activity-centric itineraries, including Zodiac boat outings, kayaking, snowshoeing and more. Celebrity Cruises, meanwhile, has a vessel designed  especially for the Galapagos Islands .

◾ Operators like HX (formerly Hurtigruten Expeditions) , Lindblad Expeditions and Silversea Cruises also offer trips with a spirit of exploration at their core.

Best cruise line for letting loose

◾ Virgin Voyages offers adults-only sailings and a unique onboard atmosphere with its immersive Scarlet Night celebration and innovative performances . There is also no main dining room or buffet, with a focus on a variety of different food and drinks instead.

▶◾ Guests can also find parties on other lines, such as Carnival . But the length of the sailing and the time of year play a role in a cruise's vibe. Spring break cruises, for instance, may be rowdier than times when school is in session.

◾ Parties can take different forms, too. Cunard Line , for example, hosts formal gala nights .

Best cruise for rest and relaxation

Upscale cruise lines can lend themselves to a more relaxed and pampering experience. Guests are less likely to encounter rock-climbing walls or ice-skating rinks but will find amenities like pools and carefully curated dining. The following operators are all in that category:

◾ Silversea

◾ Regent Seven Seas Cruises

◾ Oceania Cruises

◾ The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection

However, even on mainstream lines, guests can often get away from the bustle of the ship in onboard spas and adults-only areas. Luxe ship-within-a-ship concepts like Norwegian's The Haven or MSC's Yacht Club can also offer a more intimate, laid-back experience.

What should I pack for a cruise?: Here are 5 essential items to bring

Best lines for river cruising

River cruising tends to be small-scale and destination-focused.

▶◾ European river itineraries from lines like AmaWaterways, Uniworld Boutique River Cruises and Viking often stop at a mix of marquee and less-visited ports, so guests aren't fighting crowds the whole time.

▶◾ In the U.S., American Cruise Lines offers a diverse selection of itineraries, from sailings on the Columbia and Snake Rivers to round-trip cruises from Washington, D.C. Viking also has a ship purpose-built for the Mississippi River .

Why Carnival Corp. Rallied Today

June 25, 2024 — 03:19 pm EDT

Written by Billy Duberstein for The Motley Fool  ->

Shares of cruise industry leader Carnival Corp. (NYSE: CCL) were rallying today, up 8.2% as of 1:48 p.m. ET.

The cruise line leader reported second-quarter earnings this morning, beating analyst expectations handily and quelling fears that higher interest rates might be crimping demand for cruising.

It appears there's seemingly no stopping the momentum of the cruise industry as consumers seek affordable "revenge travel" voyages left and right.

Inflecting to positive profits

For its fiscal second quarter, Carnival reported $5.78 billion in revenue, up 17.7%, with non-GAAP (adjusted) net income inflecting from negative $0.31 a year ago to positive $0.11. Both figures handily beat analyst expectations. Adjusted free cash flow came in at a solid $1.3 billion.

Not only that, but management also forecast record bookings numbers despite higher pricing, along with moderating costs. For the full year, management raised its adjusted net profit guidance by $275 million relative to the prior quarter.

Basically, just about everything that could go right went right for Carnival. Customers continued to book cruises despite higher prices, while Carnival was able to hold adjusted cruise costs per available lower berth day (ALBD) outside of fuel costs flat compared with the prior year, thanks to further identified cost savings.

Meanwhile, the cumulative booked position for the rest of 2024 is the highest on record, both in terms of pricing as well as occupancy, and the cumulative booked position for 2025 is even higher. Total customer deposits totaled a record $8.3 billion, about $1.1 billion higher than the previous record last year.

Importantly, the company also continued to chip away at its debt load it accumulated during the pandemic. In the second quarter, Carnival paid down $1.6 billion in debt, while repricing another $2.7 billion. The company also issued $535 million in notes maturing in 2030 to pay off its 2026 unsecured notes, extending its debt maturities. All told, the transactions should lower the company's interest expense by $85 million on an annualized basis. Still, overall debt remains substantial, at $29.3 billion as of May 31.

Reaching its "SEA Change" early?

New CEO Josh Weinstein unveiled Carnival's three-year strategic plan, called "SEA Change," last year, in which the company seeks to decrease carbon emissions by 20%, increase adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) per available lower berth day by 50% over 2023, and achieve a 12% return on invested capital by the end of 2026.

On the earnings release, Weinstein noted the company will already be two-thirds of the way there by the end of 2024.

That's certainly encouraging, and also may have analysts thinking the company could exceed its 2025 and 2026 targets as well. No wonder the stock is rallying today.
