21 Great Things to Do in Bethlehem, PA (and the Rest of Northampton County)

The best things to do in Bethlehem PA

I’ve traveled all throughout Pennsylvania, and one of my favorite places to visit is the Lehigh Valley city of Bethlehem. This vibrant city features a fascinating history and has emerged from the loss of its main industry to become a charming and vibrant city.

Based on my travels through the area, I decided to share a few of my favorite things to do in Bethlehem, PA. Whether you love history, outdoor fun, or are simply looking for a way to relax, there’s a lot to love about this part of the Lehigh Valley.

Here are a few of our favorite things to do in and around this great destination.

National Museum of Industrial History

The National Museum of Industrial History is one of my favorite things to do in Bethlehem, PA

Located inside the once-abandoned electrical repair shop for Bethlehem Steel, the National Museum of Industrial History offers a fantastic overview of the industries that shaped the Lehigh Valley and the surrounding region.

The museum highlights the region’s steel-making history, as well as the silk and propane industries. There’s also a section that showcases giant engines designed for the 1876 Centennial exposition in Philadelphia.

Christmas Markets

The Christmas markets in Bethlehem, PA

Bethlehem is known as Christmas City USA , so it should come as no surprise that there are many great things to do during the holiday season.

One of the highlights is the Christmas markets that can be found throughout the city. The many shops in downtown Bethlehem, PA, also come alive during the season and are great for finding a perfect gift for everyone on your list (or yourself).

America on Wheels

America on Wheels is a great thing to do near Bethlehem Pennsylvania

America on Wheels is a great museum dedicated to the transportation history of the region. Located five miles west of Bethlehem, the museum is one of the best things to do in Allentown and is worth the short drive to visit.

The museum focuses on over-the-road transportation throughout the country with a focus on the car industry in the Lehigh Valley. Exhibits include a gas-powered car built in 1889 by Henry Nadig, one of the first gas-powered cars ever constructed.

There is also a great exhibition on the once-locally-made Mack Trucks, though those with a serious interest in the subject will want to head over to the nearby Mack Trucks Historical Museum .

Hoover-Mason Trestle

SteelStacks in Bethlehem, Pennsylvnaia

While the Bethlehem Steel Plant on the edge of downtown might no longer be producing steel, it has been turned into a focal point known as the SteelStacks.

The Hoover-Mason Trestle is an elevated train track that has been turned into a walking path alongside the stacks. From here, you can get great looks into this former steel mill and learn about the history of the site. While the path isn’t long, it’s one of the more interesting historical walks in Pennsylvania and one of the most interesting things to do in Bethlehem, PA.

Crayola Experience

Creating your own crayon at the Crayola Experience in Easton, PA

If you are looking for things to do with kids near Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, the Crayola Experience  is a great destination.

Located in nearby Easton, the Crayola Experience is sadly not a factory tour. However, it is an interactive art destination for kids that is sure to inspire the budding artist in us all. Kids (and adults) can try their hand at a variety of coloring activities, create their own crayons, and much more.

Historic Hotel Bethlehem

Exterior of the Historic Hotel Bethlehem

The Historic Hotel Bethlehem is located in the heart of the downtown area and has been greeting visitors since it was built by Charles M. Schwab in 1922. Since then, it has hosted four Presidents, Winston Churchill, the Dali Lama, Shirley Temple, and many more well-known visitors.

While it is one of the top places to stay in all of eastern PA ( Check current prices here ), it’s also a neat spot just to pop into and enjoy the displays and shops in the public areas.

Lehigh Valley IronPigs

Lehigh Valley IronPigs are a great things to do near Bethlehem PA

If you love baseball, you won’t want to miss a Lehigh Valley IronPigs game during the summer months.

The IronPigs play their games at Coca-Cola Park and are the Triple-A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies. Since the players here are one step below the Major Leagues, the quality of the baseball is very good, but the atmosphere is still intimate and the prices reasonable.

The IronPigs season runs from April through early September each year and is definitely one of my favorite things to do in the Lehigh Valley .

Fegley Brew Works

Grab a drink at Fegleys while visiting Bethlehem, PA

Fegley Brew Works is a Lehigh Valley brewery that has two locations: one in downtown Allentown and one in downtown Bethlehem.

Their location in Bethlehem is located right along Main Street and located inside a beautifully decorated historic building. Dine and sip their delicious drinks with their brewing equipment nestled near your table.

I’ve had a chance to eat and drink at Fegley’s on a few different occasions and have always been impressed with the quality of their food and beers.

Moravian Historical Society Museum

Moravian Historical Society Museum in Nazareth, Pennsylvania

Bethlehem and many of the surrounding communities were founded in the 18th century by the Moravians. To learn more about them and the history of the region, head to the Moravian Historical Society Museum in Nazareth, PA.

The museum is located in a building that dates to 1740 and features many fascinating displays on both the impacts of the Moravians as well as non-preachy information about their beliefs and how they worship.

Lost River Caverns

Moravian Book Shop

The Moravian Book Shop in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania

The Moravian Book Shop is located in downtown Bethlehem and is the oldest bookstore in the United States (and possibly the world).

This store sells all manner of books from both popular new pieces to rare and hard to find books. The interior of the store also features a gift shop with a variety of wares, including popular Moravian stars. There is also a brewery and a deli inside if you need a quick snack or meal while browsing the store.

National Canal Museum

Riding a canal boat near Bethlehem, PA

Located east of Bethlehem near Easton, the National Canal Museum offers a fascinating look at the history of canals in the region.

There is a museum that features both great signage for those interested in learning the history of canals as well as a ton of great interactive elements for kids or adults that want to have a bit of fun.

Outside, an authentically recreated canal boat offers rides along a small section of the old Lehigh Canal. The boat is still steered just as it used to be done 150 years ago and is even pulled by mules.

Ringing Rocks County Park

Ringing Rocks County Park in Bucks County is a short drive from Bethlehem, Pennsylvania

Ringing Rocks County Park is located about 30 minutes from Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, but this incredibly strange place is definitely worth the drive.

At this park, the rocks in the boulder field ring like a bell when struck with a hammer. Hitting different rocks offers different sounds, and some even try to play various songs using just the rocks.

If you happen to visit when water levels are high, the park is also home to High Falls, the tallest waterfall in Bucks County and likely the closest waterfall to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

If you drive down here, you might also want to explore our favorite things to do in Bucks County .

Moravian Museum of Bethlehem

Historic Downtown Bethlehem, PA after dark

Located in downtown Bethlehem, the Moravian Museum offers a look into the history of this community and how it grew from a small religious village into one of the largest cities in Pennsylvania.

The historic buildings here date back to the mid-18th century and give visitors a chance to learn how the Moravians lived and about their beliefs.

There are also several buildings throughout the downtown area where visitors can see how artisans lived and worked in Bethlehem hundreds of years ago.

Weyerbacher Brewing Company

The Tasting Room at Weyerbacher Brewing Company in Easton, PA

There are many fantastic breweries in Pennsylvania , but few can compete with Weyerbacher Brewing Company in Easton.

Weyerbacher opened in 1995, making it one of the oldest craft breweries in the state. Since then they have crafted some delicious beers, and a stop at their tasting room gives you the chance to try many of them for yourself.

If you want to learn more about their beer, Weyerbacher also offers free tours on Saturdays and Sundays.

Of course, they are just one of the many fantastic Lehigh Valley breweries , so make sure to check out a few others during your visit.

The SteelStacks in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania at sunrise

Every August, Bethlehem comes alive with the country’s largest free music event: Musikfest .

Held throughout town and at the SteelStacks in the shadow of the former Bethlehem Steel mill, there are more than 500 performances during this 10-day extravaganza. With so many performances, you are sure to find something that matches your musical taste.

In addition to the free concerts, there are also paid concerts held nightly featuring some of the biggest bands in the world.

Martin Guitar Factory Tour

Today, some of the world’s best guitars are still made in this small Pennsylvania community, and visitors come from all over the world to take the free tour of the factory and to gaze at the artifacts in their museum.

Lehigh and Keystone Valley Model Railroad Museum

Inside the Lehigh and Keystone Valley Model Railroad Museum in Bethlehem, PA

The Lehigh Valley has a rich railroading history and that history is kept alive at the Lehigh and Keystone Valley Model Railroad Museum .

Visitors to the museum can walk amongst three different train lines that have been incredibly recreated featuring local landmarks from throughout eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Thanks to the incredibly intricate displays here, this is definitely one of my favorite things to do in Bethlehem, PA.

Unfortunately, the museum has very limited hours, but this is definitely a spot not to miss if you can make it to their monthly open houses or during the holiday season.

Lehigh Valley Heritage Center

The Lehigh Valley Heritage Center is one of the first things to do near Bethlehem, PA

The Lehigh Valley Heritage Center in Allentown tells the story of Lehigh County and its impact on the world.

This historical society museum features thousands of artifacts from the county’s history and offers a great overview of how the region was settled and how the residents here lived their lives.

If you want to learn more about the history of the region, this is a spot definitely worth visiting.

Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

Tom of the Unknown Soldier in Bethlehem, PA

Located on a bluff overlooking downtown Bethlehem is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier .

During the Revolutionary War, Bethlehem served as a major hospital center, even once treating the Marquis de Lafayette for wounds he suffered in the Battle of Brandywine .

Unlike Lafayette, however, many of the wounded who came here did not survive. As many as 500 of them were buried in a mass grave on this hillside. To honor their sacrifice, one of the bodies was reinterred under a plaque honoring the unknown soldiers that are buried here.

I lived in BETHLEHEM from 1932 to 1953. Enjoyed seeing all the treasures of BETHLEHEM and the Lehigh Valley Area! I worked at the BETHLEHEM Steel Company for several years and my father worked in the Electrical Dept. For 40 years and died there in 1958. I have many fon memories!! Especially Illicks Mill and the Monocacy Creek where I did a lot of fishing!!

Love Bethlehem and love your website! Thanks to your postings, we have enjoyed some wonderful day trips visiting some interesting places we otherwise would not have known about. Still plenty of things to explore on my bucket list. Thanks!

Thanks for all the insights and cool suggestions. It will surely May our visit more enjoyable.

Musikfest, although a great festival, is usually during the hottest period of the summer. Be prepared to bring handheld fans, cooling cloths and containers to keep drinks cold. If you’re sensitive to the heat and are thinking it’s not for you, December is another great time to visit.

SteelStacks

When Bethlehem Steel, one of the largest steel manufacturers in the nation, shuttered its historic plant in Bethlehem after around 120 years of production, the city was left with a vacant eyesore that seemed too large for any new business to fill. But thanks to a partnership between local authorities, the nonprofit ArtsQuest, and several other groups, the site was reborn in 2011 as SteelStacks.

This 10-acre arts and entertainment complex now puts on more than 1,000 concerts every year , many of which take place on a stage in front of the iconic blast furnaces. There are also dance recitals, a movie theater, live comedy, and food experiences.

A variety of festivals take place at SteelStacks throughout the year, as well, including the annual Christkindlmarkt and an i mprov comedy festival. Check the website to see what's happening during your trip to Bethlehem.

For more than 80 years, transfer carts transported raw materials (like iron ore and limestone) to Bethlehem Steel's blast furnaces via the Hoover-Mason Trestle. Today, it has been reimagined as a 1,650-foot elevated linear park , where tourists can get an up-close view of the awe-inspiring blast furnaces.

The structures, of which two are more than 230 feet tall, each produced up to 3,000 tons of iron per day when they were in use. Educational plaques along the pathway make the experience feel like an outdoor museum, teaching about the history of this once-bustling plant and the workers who labored here.

The park is just a short walk from the National Museum of Industrial History , which provides even more information on steelmaking in the region.

National Museum of Industrial History

Learn about the important technologies and machines, along with the workers who operated them, that turned the U.S. into an industrial powerhouse at the National Museum of Industrial History .

Located at the SteelStacks campus , the attraction is housed in Bethlehem Steel's former electrical repair shop–a fitting site, considering the museum's theme.

The permanent collection displays several huge machines , including a 115-ton Corliss steam engine, a 20-foot-tall Nasmyth steam hammer, and a loom that was used to produce textiles for restoration projects at the White House. Several artifacts on display come from the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History.

The museum also helps shed light on the roles of the Lehigh Valley and Bethlehem Steel in the industrial boom. You can see equipment from the company's research labs and an original model of its steelmaking processes on display.

Address: 602 East 2nd Street, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania

Christkindlmarkt

Christmas is a big deal in Bethlehem, and its annual Christkindlmarkt has earned recognition as one of the best holiday markets in the country .

The event, which takes place at the PNC Plaza at SteelStacks , features live holiday music; handmade crafts from fine artisans across the nation; and authentic holiday collectibles from Germany's Käthe Wohlfahrt, including ornaments and nutcrackers.

When you work up an appetite from all that shopping, you can refuel with traditional holiday fare, including Christmas cookies and strudel. The market takes place Friday through Sunday from mid-November until nearly Christmas. Throughout December, it runs on Thursdays, as well.

Also at SteelStacks this time of year is an authentic ice rink. The outdoor ice-skating rink has a unique vibe with the blast furnaces in the background.

Ilick's Mill

Ilick's Mill , which is located on the eastern edge of Monocacy Park, is a historic grist mill that dates back to 1856. The four-level stone mill structure was named to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005 and now houses the Appalachian Mountain Club's Mid-Atlantic office. It's also used for a mix of public and private events.

The mill and the surrounding park look like a Claude Monet landscape painting brought to life. There's a large grassy meadow, a gentle creek, and walking paths shaded by huge trees. It's the perfect place to visit to get some fresh air and take in beautiful scenery on your trip to Bethlehem.

Address: 100 Illick's Mill Road, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania

Burnside Plantation

Just south of Monocacy Park, the Burnside Plantation is a 6.5-acre historic site that preserves what farm life was like in the 18th and 19th centuries for the Moravian community. The attraction, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is home to one of the country's only remaining high horsepower wheels that still works.

There's also a farmhouse where early Pennsylvania organ builder David Tannenberg once crafted his famous instruments, a circa-1825 summer kitchen that now hosts colonial culinary experiences during special events, a corn crib and wagon shed, and two barns.

In the spring and summer, it's also worth visiting the Louse W. Dimmick Garden, just outside the farmhouse. The volunteer-run garden, which stands as an example of an early American kitchen garden, has earned several awards.

Address: 1461 Schoenersville Road, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania

Historic Bethlehem Visitor Center

Visiting the Historic Bethlehem Visitor Center is one of the top things to do on your first trip to Bethlehem. It's housed in a structure that's believed to be one of the oldest brick homes in the town . Staff here can help you plan your itinerary, offer tips on seeing the top attractions, and provide useful brochures.

More than a stop to pick up brochures, though, this visitor center also has a museum store that is filled with crafts and artwork from local artisans, one-of-a-kind photography, books on local history, candles, soaps, and silver jewelry. It's the best place to shop for souvenirs in Bethlehem.

Address: 505 Main Street, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania

Colonial Industrial Quarter

The Colonial Industrial Quarter is branded as America's earliest industrial park. Part of Historic Moravian Bethlehem (a National Historic Landmark District) , this attraction features a number of structures erected by the Moravians as part of their effort to be a self-sufficient community.

Experts say that the streets and buildings are so well preserved that a Moravian from the mid-1700s would feel right at home in this district.

Within the Colonial Industrial Quarter, tourists can see the roughly 240-year-old Grist Miller's House and Garden and the nearby Springhouse, which is a reconstruction of a log building on the site of the original springhouse from 1764. You can also see the archeological ruins of several other structures, including a pottery, limestone dye house, butchery, and oil mill.

Guided walking tours are available from the Historic Bethlehem Visitor Center , but you're also free to explore the complex on your own.

The Banana Factory

Assembled from half a dozen buildings (including a former banana distribution center), The Banana Factory is a mecca for arts.

Tourists can wander around several floors of rent-subsidized working studios for artists from the region and see displays of their work hung all over the hallways. There are also rotating art exhibitions throughout the year, along with special events (like artists' talks ) on the First Friday of every month.

Outside the complex, you can take a look at the Banana Factory's large-scale public art, including giant whimsical flowers made from clay and the "Mr. Imagination Bus Shelter" embedded with hubcaps and colorful hands.

If seeing all that art sparks some creative inspiration, you can put it to good use in one of the Banana Factory's art classes. It offers a variety of workshops, some of which are completed in just one day, that can easily fit in a tourist's itinerary. Highlights include alternative photography, needle felting, rubber stamp carving and printing, make-your-own ornaments, and Bob Ross paint-along sessions. Free art classes are frequently available.

Address: 25 West Third Street, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania

Moravian Museum of Bethlehem

Just a couple of blocks away from the Kemerer Museum of Decorative Arts, the Moravian Museum of Bethlehem is a National Historic Landmark focused on the earliest history of Bethlehem.

The attraction is housed in the 1741 Gemeinhaus, Bethlehem's oldest building and the country's largest 18th-century log structure that's been in continuous use. Fun fact: It was also where Lewis David von Schweinitz, also known as the "Father of North American Mycology," was born.

The museum is part of a larger complex that also includes a 270-year-old apothecary and the Nain-Schober House , which is the only existing 18th-century building constructed and inhabited by Christianized Native Americans in Eastern Pennsylvania.

Visiting the museum and its buildings is through guided tours only, which are available on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, as well as by appointment during the week.

Address: 66 West Church Street, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania

Kemerer Museum of Decorative Arts

Bethlehem is home to Pennsylvania's only museum focused exclusively on decorative arts: the Kemerer Museum . The attraction was founded by art collector Annie S. Kemerer and contains many of her personal finds. It's housed in three interconnected Victorian-era homes just north of the Lehigh River.

Guided tours are required for all visitors. Within the museum, you can see one of the country's largest collections of antique dollhouses , many of which are completely set up and displayed with miniature furniture, dolls, and accompanying accessories.

There's also a Bohemian glass collection, period-era rooms, handmade furniture, antique Chinese porcelain, and temporary exhibits with contemporary art and more obscure parts of the permanent collection (like uranium glass).

Hot tip: The holiday season is perhaps the best time to visit this attraction. That's when you can see a unique Christmas tree in every room.

Address: 427 North New Street, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania

Main Street Commons

Occupying a historic building that was once home to Orr's Department Store, Main Street Commons is home to a variety of different storefronts on two levels. This low-key mall makes a convenient place to visit for a bite to eat and to do some shopping before or after visiting the Colonial Industrial Quarter .

Inside, you'll find a pizzeria, a sporting goods store, salon, and massage center. There's also an escape room, which is a particularly popular attraction among families with kids.

New stores occasionally open in this space, so it can be fun to pop in again on future visits to Bethlehem. Main Street itself has even more boutiques where you can fill your shopping bags.

Address: 559 Main Street, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania

Linderman Library

If sitting in a beautiful space and getting lost in a good book sounds like your idea of a perfect vacation, you'll adore the Linderman Library. Affectionately nicknamed "Lindy," this historic library on Lehigh University's pristine campus opened in 1873 and features Venetian architecture and a semi-circular layout inspired by the British Museum.

The Hogwarts-esque library houses an impressive collection of rare books, such as Darwin's Origin of Species and first editions of English and American literature from as far back as the 17th century.

But the real draw for literature-loving tourists are the reading spaces. The Victorian Rotunda is crowned by a spectacular stained-glass window, and features elegant archways leading to shelves of tomes and several reading chairs next to warmly lit lamps.

The Grand Reading Room, which was added to Lindy in 1929, is also magnificent, with its rows of wooden tables for studying and an ornate ceiling. You could easily spend the entire day immersed in a novel in these elegant, near-silent spaces.

Who were the Moravians?

tourist attractions in bethlehem

Deeply religious. Industrious. Undeterred by hardship. Peace-loving. Progressive. All of these words describe the Moravians of Bethlehem, members of a Protestant church that dates back to 15th century Europe. Seeking to spread their faith as missionaries, they immigrated from Moravia (now part of the Czech Republic) in 1735 to the British colony of Georgia. When they arrived, the pacifist Moravians found themselves unwillingly involved in a conflict with the Spanish as well as with Native Americans. This prompted their resettlement to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, in 1741.

The early settlers lived a communal life in the Gemeinhaus (community house), fittingly named because it was not only the center of the community, it actually housed the settlement’s 80+ people for several years. The Gemeinhaus was home, school, doctor’s office and church, all in one. Here, the settlers lived a disciplined and spiritual life, with work and church as their focus. In the early years (through 1762), the Moravians contributed to a communal economy, meaning that all individual labor was for the benefit of the community, its growth and missionary work. As the Moravian community matured, a cash economy was adopted, and settlers established their own businesses.

Progressive in many ways, the Moravians of Bethlehem valued education for girls as well as boys and treasured beautiful music (one of the earliest orchestras in the Americas was founded here in 1744).

15 Interesting Things to Do in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania

By Author Lance Longwell

The Steel Stacks in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

Located just 90 minutes from both New York City and Philadelphia, the Lehigh Valley has all the makings of the perfect weekend getaway location. It’s close to just about everywhere on the East Coast and there are a ton of activities to keep you busy. And yet, Bethlehem and Allentown are often overlooked. We should know since we live just 45 minutes away and have spent a lot of time here. Here are some of our favorite fun things to do in Bethlehem and nearby.

Explore the Steel Stacks

Walk the hoover-mason trestle, see the moravian museum and historical sites, visit wind creek bethlehem, tour the martin guitar factory, take a covered bridge tour, visit mack trucks historical museum, the moravian book shop, play around at dorney park & wildwater kingdom, see a show at godfrey daniels, go to musikfest, shop the christmas markets, sample the spirits at social still distillery, hang out at hardball cider, try a flight at fegley’s bethlehem brew works.

The Steel Stacks during Musikfest in Bethlehem

Arguably the biggest and the best of the Bethlehem attractions, the Steel Stacks tower over the south side of town. The massive gray and black structure casts a long shadow over the city and speaks to the city’s roots as a company town.

The history of the site dates back to 1857 and the creation of the Bethlehem Iron Company, which later became the Bethlehem Steel Corporation. Along the shores of the Lehigh River, the furnaces turned out steel for skyscrapers and ships, including much of the heavy armor plating for the Navy during World War II.

Defunct blowing engines

When the steel factory went silent in 1995, these massive blast furnaces were left to deteriorate. Today, the SteelStacks arts and cultural campus surrounds the giant shell of the blast furnaces, hosting numerous events.

Visitors can explore the site on a guided offered by the Historic Bethlehem organization. The tour, “Along the Lehigh River: The Rise & Fall of Bethlehem Steel,” explores all aspects of the company’s and the town’s history.

Walkway lined with steel stacks

Located just below the blast furnaces, the massive Hoover-Mason Trestle is an engineering marvel. Constructed around the turn of the 20th century, this section of track is over 40 feet off the ground and extends about a third of a mile. The narrow-gauge railroad that ran along this track would carry raw materials for steel production.

While much of the old steel plant is gone, the Hoover-Mason Trestle has been refurbished and turned into an elevated walkway for visitors. Information panels explained what used to happen along the trestle and the nearby furnaces.

Historic stone Moravian building

Most people associate the colonial period in Pennsylvania with the historical sites in Philadelphia , but there is lots of history in Bethlehem, too. In 1741, 80 Moravian refugees from Europe settled here to live the life of religious freedom. On 500 acres of land carved out of the Pennsylvania wilderness, they lived in peace with nature and surrounded by animals.

The Moravians hailed from the area that would now be considered the Czech Republic. They fashioned their community as a collective Utopia where all property was held by the church and everyone worked for the collective benefit of the community. From the beginning, women were given standing and the community even welcomed formerly enslaved people. The community was a Utopian ideal, at least for a time.

Historic building with a cupola

A visit to the Moravian Museum of Bethlehem is a great way to learn about this interesting historical period. Better yet, try to get in on one of the many walking tours offered of the various Moravian buildings in town. Children will particularly enjoy the blacksmith demonstrations in the original blacksmith shop dating from 1750 right on the main street.

Built on the site of the old steel plant, the Wind Creek (formerly the Sands Casino) was part of a massive brownfield redevelopment initiative for the city. Most of the plant was torn down, and a destination resort was built in its place.

The Wind Creek contains a hotel, table games, slot machines, The Outlets at Wind Creek Bethlehem shopping mall, and numerous restaurants. We’re not huge gamblers, but if that is your passion, Wind Creek is a great place to indulge.

Brick exterior of the C. F. Martin & Co. factory

The large Martin guitar factory is a temple to the glorious sounds of music. From country to rock, it has all been done on a C.F. Martin & Co. guitar. We don’t play guitar, so we aren’t as passionate as many visitors, but the tour is a fascinating and enjoyable experience.

Visitors enter though a rustic barn entryway into a thoroughly modern factory inside. The tour traces the 300 different steps in building a guitar as well as quality control, which includes employees riffing out some tunes on the newly minted instruments. But the highlight is the memorabilia room where famous Martin Guitars can be seen along with displays about the musicians who put the company on the map.

Display case full of guitars

After the tour, you can pick one up in the visitor center and play a few tunes. And the 1833 shop has some of the most interesting and unique merchandise we’ve ever seen on a factory tour. The factory is a fascinating visit even for the casual music fan and is one of the best free things to do in the Lehigh Valley.

Red covered bridge

Pennsylvania has long been known as covered bridge county. Immigrants, primarily from Germany and Central Europe, built several thousand covered bridges in Pennsylvania using the same construction techniques as the first covered bridges in Switzerland. Today, nearly 200 remain, with seven of them in the Lehigh Valley, mostly crossing the Jordan Creek.

Driving the 50-mile Lehigh Valley Covered Bridge Tour is like traveling back in time. All seven of the bridges can still be visited today, and you can drive over five of them.

Wooden interior of a covered bridge

Along the tour, there are numerous information panels explaining the history of the bridges and the local area. And you’ll even learn the answer to everyone’s question: why are covered bridges covered? The answer is to keep the trusses and roadway dry, thereby preventing rotting and lengthening the lifespan of the bridge.

This handy guide is helpful if you want to drive to the seven covered bridges in the area.

Beginning in 1905 and for more than 100 years, the Mack Truck company was based in Allentown, Pennsylvania. While the headquarters has moved to North Carolina, the sentimental heart of the company remains with the Mack Trucks Historical Museum .

This museum is one of the best family-friendly things to do in Allentown and is every four-year-old boy’s dream. The museum features dozens of big trucks to geek out on, including the Megatron truck from the Transformers movie, while also showcasing the company’s history and memorabilia. More than just a corporate museum, the Mack Trucks museum is a look at the technological design and developments in the industry as a whole.

Storefront of the Moravian Book Shop

On Main Street in downtown, you’ll find The Moravian Book Shop. This just isn’t your average bookstore! It is the oldest continuously operating bookstore in the world and the second oldest bookshop in the world. Since 1745, the shop has been seeing to the intellectual needs of the town.

One of the top attractions near Bethlehem are the twin amusement parks of Dorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom. Drawing visitors from all over the Mid-Atlantic, these parks hold the attention of kids and the young at heart. But thrill seekers will enjoy riding one of the longest roller coasters in the world.

Originally built in 1860 by Solomon Dorney on his farm/estate, the park was quickly taken over by the local trolley company. Dorney Park became one of the many trolley parks in the U.S. that were used to boost trolley ridership on the weekends. Over the years, the park has gone through numerous upgrades adding lots of roller coasters and thrill rides.

Built within Dorney Park is Wildwater Kingdom, one of the top Lehigh Valley attractions in the summer. This park has over 25 water slides and aquatic features to keep people cool during the hot summer months. On hot days, this park can be packed.

Why not save some money? Get discounted tickets for Dorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom here .

On the south side of Bethlehem in a rather unassuming building is a world-class music venue: the Godfrey Daniels Music Hall. From humble roots in an abandoned donut shop to now being on the international map for independent musicians, Godfrey Daniels has been welcoming bands for over 40 years. From major musicians playing throwback sets to up-and-coming artists, a show at Godfrey Daniels is one you won’t likely forget.

Band performing on stage

For 10 days every August, hundreds of musicians descend on this former steel town to perform a series of concerts that is collectively known as Musikfest . It’s part fair, part concert, and all kinds of fun. Spread over several stages, you can catch shows by Pennsylvania favorites The Amish Outlaws, or big-name acts like Dierks Bently, The Chicks, and Maroon 5.

Best of all, the entire festival is free! Only the headline acts on the Musikfest Sands Steel Stage require a ticket. We spent a long weekend enjoying dozens of acts, including a performance by Dierks Bentley.

Bethlehem markets itself as Christmas City USA. Named by the Moravians for the little town of Bethlehem in the Bible , the one in Pennsylvania tries to live up to its name. Every December, the city has the Christkindlmarkt Bethlehem, named one of the world’s best Christmas markets by Travel & Leisure magazine.

In big tents near the Steel Stacks, visitors can shop and browse for holiday gifts and try to create the magic of the German Christmas markets . While the great Christmas markets of Europe are outdoors and in the cold, the Bethlehem markets are in a tent to keep you out of the cold (and rain, as we experienced last year).

For more details on visiting the market and seeing the city during the holidays, check out this article .

Still enclosed behind glass

The craft spirits revolution was late in coming to Pennsylvania to due to antiquated liquor laws. However, there are number of great Pennsylvania distilleries today, and one of them is here.

Located in an old bank building, the Social Still distillery is one of the most beautiful working spirit houses in the United States. The glass-encased production facility is a beautiful visual showpiece to the spirits and cocktails they produce. The on-site restaurant features light bites and full meals from truffle fries to seared scallops.

Craft cider has come to Pennsylvania with the Hardball Cider Company in Mount Bethel, PA. At their tasting room, visitors can sample their ciders, wines, and local beer while enjoying food trucks and live music most of the year.

People sitting at a bar lined with glasses

You can’t spend any amount of time here and not end up at Brew Works . This local institution has been dedicated to the craft since 1998. They serve top craft, both their own as well as from other breweries of merit, plus top-flight pub food. When a local tells you to meet them at the Brew, this is what they are talking about. And if you miss it on your visit, then you are just missing out.

Where to Stay The Historic Hotel Bethlehem – The granddaddy of Lehigh Valley hotels, this hotel has a prime location right on Main Street steps from all the Moravian sites, as well as numerous restaurants. Year after year, the Hotel Bethlehem is named one of the best places to stay. Wind Creek Bethlehem Casino & Resort – Whether you are a gambler or not, there’s no beating the Wind Creek Resort. It’s a great location right at the Stacks and the hotel offers amenities like indoor pool and valet parking. The Sayre Mansion – The Sayre Mansion is one of the finest B&Bs in Pennsylvania. At the same time, those passionate for another fruit– the grape –enjoy tours and tastings at more than 12  wineries , and hop-lovers taste still another side of the area's award-winning, small-batch breweries that make up the  Lehigh Valley Ale Trail . And did we mention the handcrafted cocktails from local  distilleries ?

For history buffs

Lehigh Valley’s historic Moravian  Bethlehem , a tentative for World Heritage Designation, draws both U.S. and international visitors with sites demonstrating a unique, historically rich, and culturally significant way of life for over 300 years. Those wanting to explore the history of the former Bethlehem Steel won't want to miss a walk along the  Hoover Mason Trestle , an elevated 1/3-mile walkway built along the railway that once hauled iron ore to Bethlehem Steel’s blast furnaces. You can actually touch – and ring – a replica of the Liberty Bell that rests at the Liberty Bell Museum in Zion’s Reformed United Church of Christ in Allentown. The site was not only where America’s most famous symbol of freedom was hidden during the Revolutionary War, but it also served as a refuge during Indian raids, a hospital, and a meeting place for the reading of the Declaration of Independence. While these sites form a triple-crown for history lovers, the region offers much more for anyone fascinated by glimpses of the challenges, culture, and quirks of colonial and industrial life.

Historic Moravian Bethlehem Awaits World Heritage Site Designation

In Bethlehem, a welcome to send chills down the spine of any Jew visiting the jewel of Palestinian tourism amid Gaza war

  • 'Expect long lines,' the tourism website reads, but I am one of just a handful of visitors to the Grotto of the Nativity in Bethlehem seven months into Gaza war
  • A pilgrimage site for three religions, Bethlehem is run-down and the visitors few. I'm a Westerner, and it's hard to see when tourists like me will return

"What's your religion? Jewish? You are Jewish, aren't you? You shouldn't be here. It's dangerous for you."

It's May 2024, Gaza is being levelled and the welcome, if one can call it that, sends a chill down my spine as I walk through Bethlehem, 10km (6.2 miles) south of Jerusalem, in the Palestinian-administered area of the West Bank.

Revered as the biblical birthplace of Jesus, King David and other figures, Bethlehem has been an important pilgrimage site for Christians, Jews and Muslims for centuries.

Until October 7 last year - when Hamas attacked Israel from Gaza, sparking a bloody war - Bethlehem was also a tourist hotspot: the jewel in the crown of the US$1 billion Palestinian tourism industry.

"Whether you're interested in the history, religion or culture of the city, it is definitely a fascinating place to visit," reads information posted on the website of Tourist Israel, a travel company that runs tours in Israel and the West Bank. However, when I asked to join one of its Bethlehem tours, a spokesman for the company said those had been cancelled "due to the current situation".

I had better luck at the tourist information centre in Tel Aviv's old port city, Jaffa, where I met an Israeli who took tourists to Bethlehem before the war and who told me I could easily get a bus to Bethlehem from the Old City of Jerusalem.

Shortly after departing from the Damascus Gate, the largest and most elaborate of the entrances to the old city of Jerusalem, my bus is stopped. A pair of machine-gun-wielding Israeli border police board, to check everyone's ID.

There are two other tourists on the bus, a Christian couple from Romania. The rest are Palestinians.

The road south of Jerusalem is an engineering marvel, with tunnels, bridges and long curves that peel down the Judaean Mountains. The views are dramatic of steep, jagged, barren hills festooned with villages.

We arrive in Bethlehem 40 minutes later. First impressions? Everything is broken and dirty - the roads, the shops, the footpaths. Rubbish and weeds are everywhere. Old cars are dumped at the side of the road.

A taxi driver follows me on foot. He wants 20 Israeli shekels (US$5) to take me to the Unesco World Heritage-listed Old City of Bethlehem, where most of the historical sites are found and which lies atop a steep hill. He is pushy and arrogant.

When I tell him no, he asks me if I'm Jewish. As I walk away he shouts, "F**k you! I will get Hamas to kidnap you".

My heart starts pounding. I can feel my pulse in my hands. It is impossible to know if he is just a taxi driver with an attitude or whether he is at that very moment on the phone with Hamas.

If it is the latter, walking back to the bus stop isn't going to save me. I stay my course.

The road climbs and narrows, now lined with tall white terraces made from limestone that shine brightly in the sun. Soon I find myself in a bustling marketplace where cobblers and fruit sellers call out their wares and the smell of freshly baked flatbread wafts through the air. From a bell tower, church bells ring.

As the only Westerner, I draw looks from everyone I pass: either thinly veiled disdain or an expression of indifference. Scowling stallholders tell me not to photograph them. The only hospitality I receive is from children, who ask me where I come from.

The road narrows further, into a cobblestone alleyway lined with souvenir shops selling handicrafts and religious trinkets. But the shops are empty and the owners depressed.

"Bethlehem is a tourist place. Without tourists, how can we survive?" one laments.

"I haven't had a single customer since October 7," says another, mumbling that the war is Israel's fault.

At the top of the hill stands the Church of the Nativity, the main attraction in Bethlehem. Built in the Romanesque style in AD565, it is Christianity's oldest continually used place of worship and the oldest major church in Israel.

It is immaculately maintained, with stunning courtyard gardens full of flowers, and there is a knight's armour in a glass casing set within a wall.

The Grotto of the Nativity, where Jesus is said to have been born, is a cave underneath the main altar in one of two large churches. Plated with brass and silver, the altar is fronted by a constellation of candelabras, each an elaborate work of art.

"The grotto is the most sought-after site in Bethlehem, so expect crowds and long lines," warns Tourist Israel's website. "No guide can guarantee the time to actually enter the grotto itself."

Today there is only a small group of tourists from an Arabic country and a couple from somewhere in Africa.

International tourist arrivals in Israel have dropped 80 per cent since October 7, and most of those coming now are Jews or Christian evangelists who support the Israeli government unequivocally and are unlikely ever to set foot in the West Bank.

I go back the way I came, stopping at the marketplace to buy a falafel sandwich stuffed with hummus, salads and pickles for 5 shekels, a fifth of what it costs in Israel, and a glass of orange juice that is squeezed in a press in front of me.

I also speak with two Palestinian policemen and mention the taxi driver who threatened me. They dismiss the incident as "personal problems" and assure me Bethlehem is safe.

Before returning to Jerusalem I want to visit another key pilgrimage site, Rachel's Tomb, the burial place of the Biblical matriarch who is held in esteem by Jews, Christians and Muslims.

The route takes me along a wide, scorching hot, treeless boulevard lined with dingy storefronts where men sit smoking water pipes in groups and beggars creep out of corners, demanding money to feed their children.

When I reach Rachel's Tomb I hit a wall - literally.

Stretching for more than 700km, the West Bank Wall is a brutal nine-metre (29ft) high concrete separation barrier built by Tel Aviv 20 years ago following a wave of Palestinian suicide bombings in Israel.

The Israeli government says suicide attacks dropped 84 per cent in the three years after the wall was built compared with the three years prior. Palestinians, on the other hand, claim the wall is a tool of racial segregation and apartheid.

Although I cannot visit Rachel's Tomb, I do get to see another of Bethlehem's attractions, Banksy's Wall, a section of the separation barrier wallpapered in political graffiti and murals.

Named after British street artist Banksy, it was a popular "dark tourism" spot before the war, attracting tens of thousands of visitors every year. But on this day, I alone admire the striking murals painted by local and international artists.

I hail a taxi. The driver tears through the narrow streets of Bethlehem like a maniac, yelling sexually explicit insults at women we pass. He complains to me about the war, and says it is all Israel's fault, before dumping me at a bus stop.

I don't have to wait long for a ride. The bus winds up a series of tight hairpin turns on a steep road wedged between terrace buildings. After joining the highway to Jerusalem, we come to a stop at a military checkpoint. Everyone has to file out and present their IDs and travel permits for Israel.

Five Palestinians are pulled aside, including a couple with a baby; there is a problem with their permits and they look stressed. But after 20 minutes, everyone is waved through.

I sigh with relief when the bus enters Israel. I do not recommend travelling to Bethlehem currently.
