Juelsminde: A Popular Coastal Town in Denmark

Juelsminde, once a small fishing village, is now one of the most popular coastal towns in Denmark.

The population of Juelsminde started to grow when the railway line was brought here from Horsens in 1884.. A few years after that the harbor was added and became the focal point for the development of the town. By the time the trains stopped running in … Juelsminde was connected to Horsens by road and regular buses run between the two towns. As the town is situated at the mouth of the Vejle Fjord it does have an extensive coastline fringed with sandy beaches renowned for safe swimming. The most well-known of these beaches is Storstranden or the Great Beach. From this beach, across the water, an historic manor, Palsgaard Slot is visible in the woods that surround it. There has been a manor here since the thirteenth century. The manor is still privately owned but the grounds are open to the public. Some of its previous owners have been benefactors to the town of Juelsminde. In particular, E. V. Schou Palsgaard donated the church and the priest’s residence.

The Church of Juelsminde in Kystlandet, Denmark

This church was consecrated in 1913, and was built through the initiative of local residents who felt it was time they had their own church. It is a cruciform church in neo-Gothic style. The church is surrounded by a small cemetery where each grave as its own little plot all marked out by box hedges.

Inside the church is an original model of the Frigate Jylland. It is a Danish tradition to hang models of ships in churches and they have three purposes – historical, religious and practical. Denmark is a seafaring nation and these models represent its maritime heritage. Sometimes serve as memorials, dedicated to sailors and fishermen. Symbolically, they portray the notion that the church is a safe harbor for the souls of the congregation. Hhistorically, they were used to teach parishioners about shipbuilding and navigation. This particular model was placed in the church as the Frigate Jylland has connections with Juelsminde. It was once owned by landowner Schou of Palsgaard. Close to this church is another example of the lord of the manor’s generosity, Svanedammen, the Swan Pond.

Svanedammen or the Swan Pond was created at the beginning of the twentieth century in the middle of Juelsminde as part of a housing development. This large pond was created by excavating a low, marshy area and then spreading the soil around the area. Once this was done swans could be put on the pond and a garden village created around it. When the pond freezes over it becomes a popular venue for skating. This land originally belonged to Palsgård Slot who had to power of approval regarding planning applications to maintain the quality of new developments. The area is now subject to a local plan in the interests of conservation.

This area also features a church, the Juelsminde Adventistkirke. The Adventist Church originated from the United States where it was established in the early 1800s. It is an evangelical free church and shares many views with other evangelical free churches in Denmark. Not far from Svanedammen is a truly remarkable playground, the Juelsminde Naturlegepark.

The Harbour and Marina of Kystlandet in Denmark

From early morning until late at night the harbour and marina are busy with people indulging in water sports – from crab catching to yachting – of simply wandering along the harbour and marina admiring the boats or maybe stopping for a bite to eat. The Nior Bistro is a favourite offering good views and excellent food including a Kystlandet favourite the Shooting Star. Dominating the Stormolen, the main pier Harbourside is the huge anchor from the famous Frigate Jylland, a landmark of Juelsminde.

The Frigate Jylland or Jutland was built at Holmen in Copenhagen in 1860. It took part in the battle of Helholand in 1864. It was retired in 1886 and sold for scrap in 1908. But, it was saved and sold to Ejnar Schou owner of Palsgaard Slot in 1912. It was anchored in Sandbjerg Cove from 1912 to 1925 where it became a big tourist attraction. During its stay it was used as a radiotelegraph station, had daily contact with the sender in the Eiffel Tower in Paris and fired a cannon salute at noon every day. It lost an anchor when it was washed out to sea during the thaw one winter. This anchor with was later found by a fisherman and brought to shore at Stormolen where it is now. The frigate was sold when Schou died and was moored at Copenhagen until 1960 when it ended up at Ebeltoft (where it is now) and was finally restored in 1989.

Visitors can learn about the anchor and more maritime stories featuring Juelsminde in the Juelsminde Havnemuseum, the harbour museum, that occupies the old harbour smithy. It also tells the story of how Juelsminde developed form a small fishing village to a ferry town and finally one of the most popular and atmospheric marinas in the country. Heading back into the town centre for those who like pottery and ceramics Pottemageren, a potter’s workshop, is well worth a visit.

Pottemageren is both a shop and a workshop selling handmade crafts made on the premises. The works of ceramicist and visual artist Marie Würtz and guest potters are on display here and for sale here. And, if you cannot find what you want Pottemageren do custom work as well. Take some time out to enjoy a coffee in the garden here. A lovely way to end a day in Juelsminde and maybe find a special souvenir of your visit.

From the Tetons to the Caribbean, 6 Getaways for Grown-Ups

We found new and revamped adults-only hotels and resorts for those who want to get away from it all.

If a hotel full of children is not your idea of a vacation, why not try a getaway just for grown-ups? From posh city hotels to tropical resorts, these new and recently expanded adults-only escapes beckon solo travelers, couples and friends with nature hikes, classes like pottery and macramé, spa treatments, tequila tastings and perhaps the greatest luxury of all: peace and quiet.

Sedona, Ariz.

After being closed for two years, this longstanding escape amid the red rocks of Sedona has reopened following a $40 million renovation and expansion. Part of the Relais & Châteaux hotel network, the hotel’s new additions include the Hummingbird at Mii amo restaurant, where you can enjoy seasonal local produce. There’s also a 3,300-square-foot movement and fitness studio; a reflexology path designed to massage and engage acupressure points on your feet; an expanded spa, where you can get a massage with CBD oil and try reiki or hypnosis; and a yoga lawn.

Choose from 16 renovated casitas and seven new casita rooms and suites. All of the property’s 23 rooms have fireplaces, outdoor spaces and heated bathroom floors. The new suites have soaking tubs from which you can take in the views.

Visits to the resort, which in the past have been offered for three-, four-, or seven-night packages, can now be booked for up to 10 nights. Included are accommodations, food and drinks, treatments and activities such as hikes and fitness classes. Prices from $4,100 per person for a three-day package.

Charleston, S.C.

You’ll be welcomed with Champagne when you arrive at this 10-room-and-suite hotel in the city’s Cannonborough Elliotborough area, north of the French Quarter. The hotel, spread across four buildings from the 19th to early 20th centuries, recently expanded, adding a fifth building as well as gathering places and accommodations.

The new building, a two-story pink pool bungalow, has a suite on the top floor with vaulted ceilings and French doors that lead to a wrought iron balcony overlooking the hotel’s saltwater pool. Or consider another new accommodation option: the Charleston king, which has 10-foot ceilings, a porch and a fireplace. There are several communal spots where you can crack open a book and hang out, including a library, a cafe, a courtyard garden and piazzas. Look forward to wine and cheese pairings in the afternoons, and chocolates in the evenings. Reservations also include European continental breakfast and free bicycles. Prices from $379 a night for a loft king; from $579 a night for the new bungalow suite.

Cancún, Mexico

Hyatt Vivid Grand Island

Set between Nichupté Lagoon and the Caribbean, this 400-suite, all-inclusive resort is the first Hyatt Vivid property, an adults-only brand meant to appeal to a new generation of travelers seeking a casual vibe. The resort has a contemporary atmosphere where you can take a Spanish class, make pottery, try meditation, enjoy live music and attend mezcal tastings. Three pools include a 295-square-foot rooftop infinity pool. The nearby Ennea Beach Club has yet another pool, as well as a snack bar and restaurant, and access to Playa Delfines, the white sand beach with the “Cancún” sign that’s a popular photo spot. Plenty of places will sate your appetite, including restaurants with cuisines as varied as Mexican, Italian, French and Japanese, along with half a dozen bars.

Even the smallest suites are roomy at about 570 square feet, and all have balconies with water views. Stay in a Vantage Club suite for additional amenities like soaking tubs and espresso machines, and to use the Vantage Club lounge where continental breakfast is served, as well as hors d’oeuvres in the afternoon, desserts and spirits. A grand opening rate of $350 a night, per person, is available for the remainder of 2024.

Also worth nothing: Hyatt just introduced Casa Zamna in Tulum, a 21-room-and-suite, all-inclusive luxury addition to its Zamna Beach Club, about 15 minutes from its adults-only Secrets Tulum Resort & Beach Club , where you can also use the spa and restaurants. Prices from $605 a night, per person.

Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

Grand Velas Boutique Los Cabos

This new all-inclusive boutique beachfront hotel with views of the Sea of Cortez offers 79 contemporary suites in soothing tones, each more than 900 square feet. Inside you’ll find Mexican art and a living area with a sofa, along with a terrace that has a hot tub or plunge pool. Some suites have fire pits. All rooms have welcome bottles of wine and mezcal. Go for a swim in the infinity pool, then head to the spa for treatments like “ocean sounds,” a massage that incorporates vibrating bowls.

A seaside breakfast can be had at the hotel’s Del Mar restaurant. Later, visit LOTO Robata Grill for Japanese cuisine, including grilled seafood. For cocktails, ceviche and views of the sea or stars, depending on the time of day, there’s Roca Snack & Bar , which takes its name from the area’s rock formations. If tequila and mezcal are your beverages of choice, check out the Agave Tasting Room . For craft cocktails , stop at 51 Bar where, in the mornings, you can grab coffee, breads and pastries. Prices are from $626 a night, per person, in double occupancy, and include meals, beverages (alcohol, too), nightly entertainment, 24-hour in-suite service, taxes and gratuity. At the nearby sister property, Grand Velas Los Cabos , guests may use the amenities at no additional charge, including its pools and dining options, such as Cocina de Autor , which was awarded a Michelin star .

Jackson, Wyo.

Hotel Yellowstone

This 36-suite luxury boutique hotel, with breathtaking views of the Teton Range, opened its doors last month, describing itself as the first adults-only hotel in Jackson Hole. Inside you’ll find tranquil suites that are modern and spacious, with balconies, fireplaces, furniture from Restoration Hardware , and bathrooms with soaking tubs (many with views of the Tetons).

You won’t be far from the boutiques and restaurants of Jackson’s Town Square , and you’ll be about 20 minutes from Grand Teton National Park . Whether returning from a rigorous day of hiking or shopping, you can relax at the hotel’s spa with a massage or facial, or indulge in a package like the Cedar Series for men, which includes a “bourbon and coffee sugar scrub” and a “sage deep tissue massage.” In the Himalayan salt room, relieve your stress and congestion by breathing air infused with micronized salt particles, or go for a swim in the heated indoor pool. Hit Jackson Hole for dinner and drinks, or pull up a chair at the hotel’s Olivia’s Restaurant and Bar for flatbreads, burgers, seafood and cocktails against a backdrop of soaring mountains. Prices from $1,499 a night, which includes daily breakfast at Olivia’s (in-room breakfast is an additional cost).

Hatteras Island, N. C.

Edgecamp Pamlico Station

This 14-suite boutique hotel just opened in the Outer Banks with whimsical 700-square-foot rooms designed by Jonathan Adler . Each has water views, a wood-burning fireplace, living room, kitchen, record player and wellness-themed amenities like yoga mats, resistance bands and, for those with tight muscles, a Therabody massage gun . Beyond your suite, a wellness center with a sauna and hot tub awaits. In-room treatments from local therapists can also be arranged, as can private exercise classes and yoga on your deck or on the beach.

The area’s outdoor pleasures include surfing and kite-surfing. If you prefer to stay on dry land, go for a ride in a dune buggy or bicycle. The hotel is not far from sights like the Cape Hatteras Light Station , the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island and the Wright Brothers National Memorial , the site of the first powered flight. Prices from $244 a night in September with a two-night minimum stay.

The Coastal Path Snaptun - Juelsminde

Prepare for a beautiful and varied hiking route between the two atmospheric seaports Snaptun and Juelsminde – just off the coast. You will pass through deep forests, wide sandy beaches, idyllic villages and beautiful manor parks, before reaching the lovely Juelsminde.

One of the Denmark’s most varied hiking routes

The trail between Snaptun and Juelsminde is a beautiful hike of 22 kilometres. It offers typical beautiful Danish landscape. See the beautiful mansions, walk between the breathtaking yellow rape fields and climb the hilly forest paths. The route also passes through plenty of wide sandy beaches.

We recommend you take the tour in one go, if the weather and the shape is for it, but you can also easily divide it into stages. There are, for example, good parking facilities at the Nature Center Tønballe, Pøt Strandby, As Vig, Birkholm, Palsgaard and Bugten. Information boards are set up along the track. At the trail's start in both Juelsminde and Snaptun, you can find the folder over the coastal path Snaptun-Juelsminde.

Highlights of the hike

1: the little ferry port snaptun.

This small ferry port and marina exudes maritime atmosphere. At the harbour there are eateries and good opportunity to enjoy an ice cream in the sun. From the harbour there are many daily ferry departures to the islands of Hjarnø and Endelave. There is a bus stop at the harbour and a large parking lot. The trail starts at the southern end of the harbour.

2: The redoubts at Horsens Fjord

To protect the city of Horsens from invading Swedish troops, redoubts have several times been established in Horsens Fjord. Around Snaptun you can see ”Little Battery” and ” Big Battery”. On the tour, you pass "the Swedish redoubt" in Tønballe Forest, where two cannons stand on a hilltop.

3: Jensgaard Manor

South of Tønballe Forest you come to the mansion Jensgaard in pleasant rural surroundings. The great big mansion has a history dating back to around 1300, where it was called Inæs and allegedly belonged to Øm Monastery.

After going through the holiday home village Pøt Strandby and Sønderby Forest, you come to As Vig. The great cove is a popular holiday area due to the beautiful sandy beach. The whole tour through As Vig you walk on the beach. Along the way you will see the whitewashed As Church, beautifully situated on a hill near the water. NB: in the southernmost part of As Vig, it can be difficult to follow the beach at high tide.

When you turn from As Vig Beach and into the country, you will encounter mounds of the predecessor of the current Palsgaard Castle. The mounds are located in an artificial lake and consist of two banks. Remains of the old Palsgaard are dated to 1275-1300.

6: Palsgaard Castle Park

After the walk on a beautiful old mansion avenue, you come to Palsgaard Castle Park. The route goes just past the castle with the beautiful park and the well maintained old buildings, but we recommend a little detour with a walk through the picturesque park.

On the trail around the park you pass the majestic main building that looks out over the bay at the city Juelsminde.

The park offers sculptures, beautiful herbaceous perennials, mighty rhododendrons and a variety of rare tree species.

7: Sandbjerg Vig

Passing hrough forest you come south of Palsgaard to the bay Sandbjerg Vig, which also has a beautiful sandy beach. The first stretch along the coast, you walk on an elevated grass path and the last kilometres towards Juelsminde, you walk on the beach. Near Juelsminde there is a campsite and ice-cream kiosk. All the way you have a nice view towards the city and the harbour.

8: Juelsminde

The last part of the tour, you walk along the beautiful houses by the sea. The path ends at the harbour.

Juelsminde is today known as a coastal and holiday town with a buzzing life on the harbour and on the Great Beach, which attracts many tourists every summer. Enjoy the atmosphere, order a delicious fish dish or eat an ice-cream in the sun. There are several opportunities to enjoy life a little extra in Juelsminde.

From Juelsminde there are busses to Horsens and Vejle and there is free parking throughout the city.
