Chiragh-i-Dihli Dargah in Delhi is located in the Chirag Delhi Village. It is easily accessible from the Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg through the Chiragh main road or the Outer Ring Road through the Soami Nagar South Colony. It houses the cenotaph of the Sufi saint Nasir-ud-Din Mahmud. Known as Raushan Chiragh-i-Dihli, which signifies the 'Illuminated lamp of Delhi', the sufi saint died in the year 1356. Nasir-ud-Din Mahmud was the disciple of Hazrat Nizamuddin. Nasir-ud-din Mahmud became the head of the Chisti sect after his master’s death. The village of Chirag Delhi grew up around this sacred tomb and was earlier surrounded by broken rectangular walls with gateways on each side, built by Muhammad Bin Tughlaq.

The main tomb of the pious saint is a square chamber supported on twelve pillars and enclosed by a dome with turrets on every corner. The dome here resembles that of Mubarak Shah's tomb which rises from an octagonal drum and is a plastered one. Several additions have been made in the dargah complex over time. Today the shrine complex houses the assembly hall (Majlis-Khana) or the symposium hall (Mahfil-Khana), apart from several tombs of noble and distinguished men. The sacred cpmplex houses several mosques. Emperor Farrukhsiyar built one of the mosques in the early 18th century in veneration and reverence of the holy saint.

Chiragh-i-Dihli's Dargah in Delhi is a major tourist attraction in the capital city. It is home to the tomb of the famous Sufi saint Nasir-ud-din Mahmud. He earned the epithet 'Raushan Chiragh-i-Dili' (illuminated lamp of Delhi). He inherited the legacy of Hazrat Nizamu'd-Din, his master as the head of the Chisti sect. The sacred saint died in 1356. The village of Chiragh Delhi which grew up around the tomb of Nasir-ud-din Mahmud is today an urban settlement. The village was earlier enclosed in a large rubble-built rectangular square built by Muhammad Bin Tughlaq.

The tomb has been refurbished over time. Majlis Khana(assembly hall) and Mahfil khana(symposium hall) are the special features of the shrine complex. Several mosques, including the one built by Farrukhsiyar are enclosed within the complex. The shrine complex also houses several tombs and graves.

Chirag Delhi Mosque Overview

Chirag Delhi Mosque

The ‘ Chirag-e-Delhi ’ mosque is located in the Chirag is located in the Village of Chirag, Delhi. The place is accessible from the road via the Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg. The mosque is actually a mausoleum (a burial tomb) of the world-famous Sufi Saint Hazrat Nasiruddin Mahmud Chiragh Dehlavi .

He was actually the one who famously got the name Chirag-e-Delhi . After his death, this mausoleum was built by the Sultan of Delhi at that time, Firoz Shah Tughluq in the year 1358. Later with the advent of time, the mausoleum got newer constructions built-in itself, such as two new gates, a mosque in the later 18th century along with others.

This Tughluq era architectural shrine was famous among both Muslims and non-Muslims even at that time. However, one can see that Qawwalis are not performed at the ‘dargah’ of this Sufi saint due to it being considered ‘unislamic’ by some.

The dargah in itself is an extremely beautiful work of architecture. It holds a very holy and pious feel to it, because of which you will want to come here again and again. That is the beauty of India, a monument of a different religion attracts people from every religion, which is not seen anywhere in the world.

Hazrat Nasiruddin Chirag- Biography

Hazrat Nasiruddin Chirag

Hazrat Nasiruddin Chirag Dehlavi, also known as Nasiruddin Mahmud Chirag was a Sufi saint of the order of Chisti. He is considered the last of the important Sufi saints in Delhi who were from the Chisti order. This famous Sufi saint is known as Chirag-e-Delhi .

Family and Birth

Before becoming a Sufi saint, Hazrat Nasiruddin Chirag held the name Syed Nasiruddin Mahmud Al-Hassani. He was born around the year 1274 in Ayodhya , which is in modern-day Uttar Pradesh. Syed Nasiruddin’s father, whose name was Syed Mahmud Yahya AlHassani was a trader, most importantly trading in Pashmina shawls and other Pashmina related clothes.

The grandfather of Hazrat Nasiruddin was incidentally an immigrant, who had first migrated from Khorasan(north-eastern Iran) to Lahore and afterward to Ayodhya, where he had settled permanently after some time. Hazrat Nasiruddin’s father took his last breath when he was only 9 years old , which was a big shock to him.

Not much can be found about Hazrat Nasiruddin’s mother, or if he had any brothers and sisters. This seems to be all the information which is available on his the family of Hazrat Nasiruddin.

It was the mother of Hazrat Nasiruddin who helped him in getting good Islamic education after the death of his father. He was devout towards his religion since his childhood. However, there’s a little conflict about his early days of education.

According to some sources, he had reportedly studied ‘Bazoodi’ from Qazi Mohiuddin Kashani. But some sources contradict this and say that he studied ‘Bazoodi’ and ‘Hadaya’ from Maulana Abdul Karim Sherwani.

After the demise of Abdul Karim Sherwani, Hazrat Nasiruddin found himself being sent to Maulana Iftikharuddin of Gilan, who is said to be extremely aware of many different branches of Islam. From his teachers, he acquired unprecedented knowledge about different aspects of Islam and general life.

Chiragh Dehlavi

Hazrat Nasiruddin Chirag renounced this world of materialism at the very young age of 25. At that age, he began his strivings (mujahids) against the Nafs. From that time, it is said that for about 8 long years, he could be seen dwelling in the forests and mountains of Awadh, where he would fast a lot. Often he would break his fast from surrounding herbs and other leaves. This was also a part of his education which bought him close to nature and helped him in learning many survival skills.

Hazrat Nasiruddin had come to Delhi aged 43, where he joined the circle of Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya and became his ‘mureed’. During the end of Nizamuddin Auliya’s life, he observed that his mureed, Nasiruddin had accomplished all tasks which one requires in order to become a dervish, he immediately appointed him as a ‘ Khalifa’(divine successor) which was considered to be in line with the will of the divine.

After his appointment, Hazrat Nasiruddin was given Tabarrukaat (sacred relics), which were of the Chishti Order. Even though Amir Khusro, an extremely brilliant and devout mureed of Nizamuddin Auliya seemed to have all the qualifications, it was Nasiruddin who was made the Khalifa, because according to Nizamuddin Auliya, it was Allah’s will.

Hazrat Nasiruddin did well to maintain the ‘silsila’ traditions and after the death of Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya, he did well in spreading the teachings of his mission throughout India. He became extremely popular at that time, with the word about his spiritual teachings reaching as far as Persia, Arabia, and even Egypt.

But in his early days of Khilafat, he had to endure extreme difficulties. At times, he had to fast for days at a stretch, and when he was given even one roti with sabzi, he used to treasure that little meal.

Fasting was to be done every day by him. He wouldn’t accept any food rations from his relatives. He even disguised himself as a ‘Peer Baba’ so that his poverty can be concealed from the world. But in some time, his situation improved.

He used to order the preparations of very delicious food for his mureeds and guests. He liked serving them by himself, while he used to give them small and short lessons on Islam.

Title of Chiragh

Hazrat Nasiruddin Dehlavi, who is famous as Chirag-e-Delhi has many different stories attached to how he got the title of ‘Chiragh’ or lamp.

One story goes as follows- While he was building a water reservoir for his pir, the Sultan at that time, Sultan Ghiyasuddin ordered that all the oil supplies to him be stopped so that no work could be done during the night time.

At that time, Hazrat Nasiruddin performed a miracle and asked that water be put in the lamps in place of oil. The water in the lamps then suddenly transformed into oil, which let the workers work at night. The water reservoir was then built on time.

There’s another story which is attached to the origin of his name talks about how he once went to a ‘mehfil’ (gathering) of one of his murshids and some other Sufis where he did not like the place at which he was asked to sit.

That was because his back would then have to face some other dignitaries who were also present there. At this, his mentor Nizamuddin Auliya said that “ A Chirag has no back .” This is considered a more authentic story about how he got the title of ‘Chiragh’.

Khwaja Nasiruddin Chiragh took his last breath in the year 1357 AD or 17 Ramzan 757 Hijri. He was about 82 or 83 years old at the time of his death. He was a man of wisdom, which made him realize that his silsila’s fragmentation was inevitable.

Due to this, he did not appoint any ‘ Khalifa-e-Azam ’, or a foremost successor. He concluded that if the weight of the silsila was to fall on the shoulders of any one of the mureeds, they would not be able to carry it on their shoulders. He also thought that one reason for it was the destruction of Delhi at the hands of Muhammad Tughlaq.

This decision of his prompted him to ask his mureeds to bury the tabarrukat (sacred relics) of the silsila with him. It was Hazrat Nizamuddin’s very close aide, mureed and Khalifa Hazrat Khwaja Bande Nawaz Gaisu Daraz who had performed the task of ‘ghusal’(cleaning and bathing the dead body). The strings of the ‘charpai'(a traditional bed made of strings) of Hazrat Nasiruddin were cut off by him and later used as a relic.

In 1358, the Sultan of Delhi, Firoz Shah Tughlaq built this great Sufi saint’s mausoleum which later witnessed the addition of two more gates.

Things to See in Chirag Delhi Dargah

Chirag Delhi Dargah

As talked about before, the dargah or the mausoleum was built in the year 1358 by the then Sultan of Delhi, Firoz Shah Tughlaq . At one point of time, the Dargah was a full-fledged fort, with green gardens and even water bodies in itself.

But today, if one goes there, you will find that the place is today a rather cramped urban jungle, with the mausoleum somewhat lost between all the development and concrete. But one finds that even today, the dargah has not lost its sanctity. Also, for most visitors, the concrete maze adds an exciting twist which they seem to enjoy.

In the modern village of Chirag, which has developed around the village, one sees that finding the mausoleum is a rather tedious task. The village has a father mixed population of Hindus and Muslims, which represents the culture of India.

Both the communities regularly socialize in different local festivals. Many local Hindus say that when their family members get ill, they take them to Chirag Delhi Dargah . They say that it helps heal them miraculously, which is quite a thing.

Even though the dargah is in ruins, with the plaster falling off and the paint fading from many places, there are still many people who visit the dargah, only because of its sheer holiness. The popularity of the dargah is pan-religion, and that is what makes it so great.

Chirag Delhi Takht

The dargah has two gateways, which were added to the mausoleum afterward. Today, there is one outer wall and four different gates which enclose the whole structure.

Out of the four gates, it is the Eastern Gateway which is called the ‘taketh Darwaza’. It is a two-storeyed door which has two piers. One could notice that those piers were meant to hold a wooden door in place.

Today, there is no such wooden door. It is one of those gates which were added to the structure at a later period. It is a popular structure of the mausoleum which attracts people to it.

Namaaz Hall

Chirag Delhi Namaaz Hall

The namaaz hall is also one of the several additions which were made to the dargah after its completion. The hall today is used to recite ‘namaaz’(Islamic prayers) 5 times a day.

The hall was previously known as ‘Majlis Khana’ or an ‘Assembly Hall’. It was also called the ‘Mahfil Khana’ or the ‘Symposium Hall’. This hall, along with a mosque was constructed by the Mughal King-Emperor Farrukhsiyar to honor the famous and holy Sufi saint.

Chirag Delhi Graves

The dargah has in itself the mausoleum of the great Sufi saint Hazrat Nasiruddin Chirag Delhi . His grave can found in the tomb of the dargah, which went through different phases of renovation throughout its history.

Today, one can see it being enclosed by a square-shaped chamber, which garments support from 12 different pillars. There are also some shaped towers at every corner which support a larger dome which can be seen sitting on an octagonal shaped drum.

This chamber has now been enclosed by perforated screens (translucent curtains) from which one can look at the resting place of Hazrat Nasiruddin Chiragh and witness the holiness within.

Other Sufi Dargah

Chirag Delhi Sufi Dargah

The disciples and descendants of Hazrat Nasiruddin are found quite far and wide from Delhi. Some are found to be as far as Hyderabad. In Ayodhya, one can find the Dargah of Badi Bua or Badi Bibi , who is considered to be the elder sister of Hazrat Nasiruddin Dehlavi.

There are many other such Dargahs of the Chisti order, such as the Dargah of Hazrat Moinuddin Chisti in Ajmer, Dargah of Sheikh Salim Chisti in Fatehpur Sikri and many others. But not all saints of the Chisti order are related to Hazrat Nasiruddin by blood, but only by the Chisti order.

Chirag Dilli – A Refuge of Sufi Saints

Deep in the narrow alleys of today’s Chirag Delhi lie the treasures of medieval Delhi in the 14th and 15th centuries. The area was named Chirag Dilli as the saint Shaikh Nasiruddin Mahmud, who was given the title of Roshan-e-Chirag Dilli, was buried here. Shaikh Nasiruddin Mahmud succeeded Shaikh Nizamuddin Auliya as the head of the Chistiya sect. The tomb enclosure of Shaikh Nasiruddin houses many important structures such as the mosque of Farukhsiyar and the tomb of Shaikh Zainuddin, among others.

Next to the Dargah complex of Saint Nasiruddin lies the tomb of the founder of the Lodhi dynasty, Bahlol Lodhi. This tomb is iconic in its architectural style and differs on a large scale in comparison with the tombs of the other Lodhi rulers situated in the Lodhi Gardens. The alleys of Chirag Delhi also hide several gateways, enclosure walls and other structures, that still stands today, in a derelict state.

Come, join us in this interesting journey of the lesser known Delhi of the 14th and 15th centuries.

He was also called Shams-ul-Arifeen, which means Aftab Hakim. He was called Bayabani because of making the jungle (forest) his home. It is believed that he became the beloved of God in 1240 AD. A contemporary of Qutbuddin Bakhtiyar Kaki. Whose followers lived in solitude and dense forest. The author of The Delhi Who Knows Nothing, R.V. Smith wrote in the Deccan Herald: “They did not live in Mehrauli where the new rulers resided. In those days this area (Dariaganj) was a forest where many animals roamed, but this man of God had nothing to fear. Their needs were very simple and they ate wild fruits and drank water from the pond which was at the place where Ramlila Maidan is now. As a result, she was not as popular, although Bayabani was counted among her devotees such as Razia Sultana , the only female ruler of the Delhi Sultanate. There is a theory that the Turkman Gate, a landmark in Delhi meant to mark the tomb of a Sufi, may not even be the actual location of his final resting place. Oral traditions say that Basant Utsav was celebrated in this dargah. Every Thursday devotees of all religions come to seek blessings.

The prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) used to pray for him and when the man returned after a few days, it was said that he was completely cured of the disease. After the incident, people started gathering at the dargah to seek blessings. Hearing the news of this miracle, the then Sultan of Delhi, Ghiyasuddin Balban , decided to test Baba’s powers. He sent them iron balls and clay plates. Seeing the plate, Baba covered it and started praying. After finishing the prayer, when he opened the plate, everyone was surprised that the iron balls had turned into roasted gram and clay. Then Baba mixed all these in water and made sweet milk. That’s why he is called Baba Matka Pir because all the ingredients mentioned above are served to him in an earthen pot or pot.

Chirag-i-Delhi-Dargah, Delhi Overview

Address: Malaviya Nagar-Kalkaji Road City: New Delhi State: Delhi Location: North India Constructed By: Nasiru'd-Din Mahmud Type of Construction: Medieval Type of Building: Mosque Religion: Islam

The Chiragh-i-Delhi Dargah is a mausoleum which was built by Feroz Shah Tughlaq of the Tughlaq dynasty (1351 - 1388) as a token of respect for the Chisti preacher Hazrat Nasiruddin as the emperor was a religious follower of his teachings. B wing located in the Village of Chirag Delhi this can be reached from the Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg (Road) and from this road one needs to travel through the outer ring road also called Chirag Road while passing through the Soami Nagar South Colony. One can either drive using own vehicle or even use a public transport like a taxi or a bus. Being born in 1274 in Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh Hazrat Nasiruddin Mahmud Chiragh Dehlavi who was known by the name of 'Nasiruddin' was born to a small Trader of Pashmina wear and textile named Sayed Yahya and was single-handedly raised by his mother. He received his education from Maulana Abdul Karim Sherwani as well as Maulana Iftikhar-ud-din Gilani. Having left Ayodhya around 1314 he came to Delhi at an age of 40 in order to become the follower of Khwaja Nizamuddin Auliya and also decided to spend the rest of his life in his service as a 'Murid'. He succeeded Khwaja Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya after his unfortunate demise and continued preaching Chisty with integrity and also became a well-renowned Persian poet. He was strikingly different from his master as he refused to promote ‘Sema’ which was considered to be a Non-Islamic act of his and favoring that even today 'Quwwalis' are not sung beside his Tomb and Dargah in South Delhi. Hence, most of his descendants fled to Hyderabad and his sister was buried in Ayodhya and her mausoleum being named ‘Badi Bibi’Chirag Delhi has been named after the title which he was honored with that is ‘Roshan Chiragh-e-Delhi' which means the 'Illuminated Lamp of Delhi'. Finally 1356 Ad marked his demise when he was at the age of 82. The date is also known as '17 Ramadan 757 Hijri’. The walls of the Dargah of this saint have been strengthened using rubble stone and have been allotted a rectangular shape. The Dargah was later renovated by Muhammad Bin Tughlaq (successor of Feroz Shah Tughlaq) when a chamber and two gateways were also added on either side of the Mausoleum. Having undergone several renovations this mausoleum today stands comprising of a chamber square in shape which is further supported by Twelve Pillars. At the corners, there are some small towers displaying dome shapes and are also supporting a large dome located on an octagonal shaped drum. A perforated screen encompasses the chamber through which one can look through. It faced even more reformations when Mughal Emperor Farrukhsiyar constructed a 'Majlis Khana' or an 'Assembly Hall' which was also called as 'Mahfil Khana' of which the literal meaning is the 'Symposium Hall’ and also a mosque. As a positive after effect of the phenomenon of Urbanization this area saw developments of settlements surrounding this Dargah and the area around it came to be known as 'Chirag-i-Delhi' which lies very close to Greater Kailash in South Delhi.

Chirag Dilli: The Illuminated Lamp of Delhi

tourist places in chirag delhi

An urban village is a type of urban development that often features mixed-use zoning, good public transportation, medium-density housing, and a focus on pedestrianisation and open space. New Urbanism and smart growth ideologies developed in the United States are strongly tied to the modern urban. Urban villages are sometimes viewed as offering a remedy for the decline of community that is frequently connected to modernism and sprawl. The idea is to create better-functioning communities by drawing inspiration from the social and physical morphology of the typical rural hamlet. Ebenezer Howard’s Garden City ideas, which likewise emphasize environmental determinism in connection to community, have impacted the urban village movement. By promoting social interaction, urban design strategies like public space and pedestrianization help to promote the growth of communities. Many characteristics of this concept are also found in the new urbanism school of thought. High-growth rural areas in the central quadrants and along highway corridors were targeted early on in Delhi’s development to become a suitable capital city. Over time, ‘lal dora’ land—non-agricultural land—in historically rural villages like Hauz Khas or Chhatarpur and Chirag Dilli, as well as some forest land—have been altered to make room for urban tenements.

Establishment of Chirag Dilli

A Sufi saint of the Chishti Order of Islam from the 14th century, Hazrat Nasiruddin Mahmud (R.A) Chirag-Dehlavi was a mystic poet. He was Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya’s student and eventually his successor. He was the last significant Sufi of the Delhi -based Chishti Order. His Persian name, Roshan Chirag-e-Delhi, which translates to “Illuminated Lamp of Delhi,” which means “Chirag-e-Dilli” was given to him by Dehlavi’s supporters. Chiragh, Hazrat Nasiruddin Mahmud born around 1274, in Ayodhya-Faizabad, Uttar Pradesh. Yahya Al HASANI, the grandfather of Dehlavi, and Shaikh Yahya Abdul Latif Al HASANI moved from Khorasan, in northeastern Iran, via Lahore before settling in Ayodhya- Faizabad , in Awadh. Both men traded in pashmina. When his father passed away when he was nine, he was educated by Abdul Karim Sherwani and Iftikhar Uddin Gilani. He moved to Delhi at forty, where he studied under Nizamuddin Auliya. Dehlavi remained there for the remainder of his life as his student and, following his passing, succeeded him. He eventually gained recognition as a poet in Persian. At the age of 82 or 83, he passed away in 17 Ramadan 757 Hijri or 1357 CE, and he is buried in a section of South Delhi, India , that bears his name: “Chirag Dilli” which is become his identity in the modern day and the whole urban village is known as “Chirag Dilli.”

Chirag Dilli: The Illuminated Lamp of Delhi - Sheet2

Present Scenario

It is difficult to visualise that the claustrophobic Chirag Dilli formerly housed a magnificent fort with the sizable ground, lush meadows, and water features. The modern urban town, located adjacent to Greater Kailash, is bounded by four entrances and the ramparts of the fort wall in the shape of a square. While one of the western end’s entrances was lost to urbanization , the other three are disintegrating. Without assistance from a local, it is challenging to navigate the village’s labyrinthine alleys. The sewer system is inadequate, and the lanes are filthy. Large open spaces have been consumed over time by unchecked buildings, making it difficult to preserve its illustrious past. The community still honours its patron saint Hazrat Nasiruddin Mahmud Chirag Dehlavi. The enormous oak tree in the centre of his mausoleum , behind which people used to unwind in the summer , is still there. Old-timers say that many people sought safety in the dargah after the Partition. A sizable number of Jat and Gujjar people live in the area. Born and bred nearby, Khemchand Ahlawat, 92, said, “Even today, when our kids get sick, we take them to the dargah. Actually, after visiting the shrine, people become better. The Khirni tree, as old as the shrine, is still present in the dargah. Additionally, its fruit is thought to possess medicinal qualities.

Characteristics

The majority of the streets have mixed-use construction. Due to its strategic location, proximity to employers, and availability of reasonably priced rental housing, Chirag Delhi acts as a hub for employment. Numerous attorneys are attracted to the region by the Saket Courts’ proximity to find housing. Also residing in this region are some immigrants from the nothern states. Many of these residents support the production and selling of Chinese cuisine products. The settlement’s biggest Chowk is found outside the Chirag Delhi Dargah. The old well there has recently been covered for safety reasons. The area around Bazaar Chowk in the town has the highest concentration of business activity because of its proximity to the Dargah. The presence of grocery stores, vegetable markets, and restaurants influence the area’s character. The main problem in the village is unemployment. Many people fall prey to addictions to drugs, alcohol, and gambling. Due to the purchase of property in 1953, there has been a significant shift in the occupation of farmers, which is one of the main causes of unemployment. Due to the loss of their traditional livelihood, the villagers either rely on rental income or look for work in the city to make ends meet.

Conclusion: Findings of Chirag Dilli

Based on the facts acquired about Chirag Delhi and comparison with Other Places,” it is clear that Chirag Delhi exhibits traits of heterotopias.” It should be noted that most of these traits apply to most urban villages in Delhi. The dominant trend is that older, financially stable families are being replaced by younger, economically less secure male labourers who are travelling from neighbouring states in search of work as low-cost labour. Unlike their elderly neighbours, these inhabitants don’t feel a deep emotional attachment to the neighbourhood. They are eager to continue living their lives just like the rest of the city. As their financial situation improves, they will leave Chirag Delhi for a higher quality of life. So, it’s essential to look over the Chirag Dilli for its better future and possibilities; otherwise, it will become the hub of rentals, rooms , and hostel only, which will diminish its identity and the illuminating lamp that is ‘Chirag Dilli” will be blown up.

New Delhi

Rising gracefully from lush gardens and surrounded by a symmetrical charbagh (four-part garden), Humayun's Tomb exudes an air of tranquility and grandeur. The use of red sandstone and white marble in its construction adds a captivating contrast to the monument's façade, making it a visual delight for visitors and photographers alike.Interestingly, Humayun's Tomb served as an architectural inspiration for the world-famous Taj Mahal, which was built later by Emperor Shah Jahan for his beloved wife. The intricate geometric patterns, arched entrances, and delicate lattice work seen in Humayun's Tomb can be traced in the design of the Taj Mahal.Today, the tomb complex houses the graves of several other members of the Mughal dynasty, making it a cherished historical site and a symbol of India's rich cultural heritage. Visitors can explore the beautifully landscaped gardens, marvel at the detailed calligraphy adorning the walls, and immerse themselves in the captivating history that surrounds this majestic monument.

Rashtrapati Bhavan

Home to the President of the world’s largest democracy, Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi stands as a symbol of national strength. The nation’s most important democratic functions like the swearing-in ceremony of its elected leaders are carried out in these very grounds. The Rashtrapati Bhavan has been witness to honour giving ceremonies of the country’s bravehearts and achievers, signing of historic pacts between India and other nations, of India’s independence and republic day ceremonies, and the hosting of many world leaders. The Rashtrapati Bhavan is a true architectural masterpiece in its own right. The magnificent building spreads across 320 acres, including the splendid ‘Mughal Garden’ and the Rashtrapati Bhavan Museum. The design of the Rashtrapati Bhavan mainly imparts the Mughal architectural styles blended with classical and grand European signatures, credited to the British architects- Edwin Lutyen and Hebert Baker. The building is also diversified with a number of other typically Indian motifs such as ornate Elephant statues on the outer wall or the main gate of the building with the ‘Jaipur column’. All in all, it is quite a visual treat to behold! The building is open to visitors by three different segments or tour circuits. The first circuit comprises of the Main building and the Central Lawn. The second circuit houses the Rashtrapati Bhavan Museum Complex. In the same circuit, you can get a tour of the Clock Tower, the Stables, and the Garages. The third circuit has the magnificent Mughal Garden and other ancillary gardens of the Rashtrapati Bhavan. Tourists can request a trip of each of the circuits separately on the days assigned for each segment respectively for daytime visits from 9 AM to 4 PM. There is much to take in and marvel at around the complex-- the intricate craftsmanship of carved marble statues, the sprawling Mughal Gardens featuring masterful landscaping concepts, the Clock Tower, and a myriad of presidential mementos preserved inside the Museum. Upon exit, you can explore the premier surroundings of this important historical site, often called as the ‘Lutyens Delhi’.
