Italy is a beautiful country with art, history, and mind-blowing food. Its sun-drenched Mediterranean coasts in the south are gorgeous.

But pull up a map. Northern Italy borders Switzerland along the Pennine Alps, one of Europe’s most scenic and interesting areas.

So, if you’re looking for a way to fit a visit to Switzerland into your Italian vacation, it may be easier than you think with day trips from Lake Como to Switzerland.

From this enclave in the foothills of the Alps, you’re only a few hours away from experiencing fantastic Switzerland. And an unforgettable Swiss visit to this Italian-speaking region can be done in one day from Lake Como!

We’ve got a terrific list of Lake Como day trips that will give you a satisfying taste (Swiss chocolate, anyone?) of Switzerland.

The Alps where Italy and Switzerland border

Many of these single-day trips will also show you the best of Lake Como in Italy and its stunning surroundings. In the northern regions, Italian lakes, including Lake Lugano and Lake Maggiore, are famous for their crystal blue waters and exciting resorts. And, it’s easy to find one-day trips from Lake Como to explore them.

Here’s our first tip. Pack a plug adaptor for use in your Lake Como hotel or resort. This travel adaptor kit with dual USB ports is a good one that should be compatible with all your travels in Italy.

And don’t forget your travel insurance to cover your Lake Como vacation. We recommend SafetyWing to protect you in emergencies, theft, and accidents. Or, use TravelInsurance.com to help you find the best possible policy using their free quote generator tool.

Como, Italy, & Lugano, Switzerland, Private Full-Day Trip

Lake Lugano with mountains in the back.

At the start of the Como, Italy, & Lugano, Switzerland, Private Full-Day Trip , you’ll experience Como’s San Fedele Church, the Cathedral, and the Roman city walls. In Como, Italy, a portion of the trip is a two-hour walking tour and an hour for a lakeside lunch on your own.

Then buy your tickets from the San Giovanni station for the 35-minute ride to Lugano and the two-hour walking tour of the Swiss city.

Lugano’s Cathedral is the Roman Catholic Cathedral of Saint Lawrence (or Cattedrale di San Lorenzo). Established in the High Middle Ages, it had to be rebuilt in the late 15th century. The Renaissance façade was completed in 1517. Inside, you’ll find many incredible frescoes and Baroque appointments, including the bell tower.

The cathedral is adorned with cherubs, and there are busts of King Soloman and King David. Look outside, and you’ll have mesmerizing views of the town and mountains. It serves as the seat of the Diocese of Lugano and is dedicated to Saint Lawrence of Rome .

You’ll stroll through beautiful Parco Ciani on Lake Lugano, taking in the perfume of brightly colored flowers and the beauty of azure lake waters.

The park is part of the Gardens of Switzerland, so you’re always surrounded by gorgeous colors and greenery. Sit on one of the park’s iconic red benches and admire the peaks of Monte Bré and Monte San Salvatore and the enclave of Campione d’italia.

You’ll also see Lugano’s main square, Piazza Della Riforma, which is filled with bistros and restaurants, but it was also the site of several important political conflicts.

One of those events was the assassination of the progressive newspaper Gazzetta di Lugano editor, Abbot Vanelli. You’ll also see one of Lugano’s most important buildings, the Santa Maria degli Angioli church. The church was built in 1499 and 1500 and was once a monastery for friars.

It houses one of the most famous Renaissance frescoes in existence. The “Passion and Crucification” of Jesus Christ was painted by Bernardino Luini (1480-1532), an Italian artist who studied under Leonardo da Vinci. The dynamic fresco contains more than 150 figures, with some on horseback.

The Cathedral in Como

Jesus is on his cross with the two thieves surrounded by Roman soldiers (some playing dice for shreds of Jesus’ garment), throngs of witnesses, Saint John kneeling with Mary Magdalene, and grieving women soothing his mother, Mary.

Loggias in the background depict Christ encountering Thomas and carrying his cross. Other pieces in the background portray the praying in the Olive Garden and the ascension.

Other pieces completed by Luini at the church are his painting of the Last Supper and his fresco of the Madonna and Child. Saint Francis, as painted in 1728 by Giuseppe Antonio Petrini, is found in the second chapel.

After gazing at the art and attempting to fathom all the history in this space, it’s time to see the much more modern LAC Lugano Arte e Cultura. You may be able to squeeze in a visit to Lugano’s Monte Carlo-style casino. After some free time in Lugano, meet back at the train station for the return to Como and the end of a full, fun day.

Lake Lugano in Switzerland

It’s surprising how close Lake Como is to Lugano in the Italian-speaking region of Switzerland . We’re talking less than 30 kilometers.

And it’s fun to cross an international border without fuss, thanks to the Schengen Agreement . This treaty amended the practice of border checks for people in the area traveling across borders.

You are truly free to move about the country here. Located on the northern edge of Lake Lugano, the city of Lugano, the surrounding area is pure alpine mountain beauty. The people who live and work in the southernmost part of Switzerland speak Italian. So if you’re learning to communicate in Italian, you’re lucky.

You’ll be able to practice in Lugano! That’s so much easier than whipping out your German and French translation books to go across the border for a day or two. The area is known for its Swiss-Mediterranean combination of culture, architecture, and food. It’s elegant and historical. And did we mention beautiful?

You can also easily reach a few other Swiss cities by fast trains. But read on to discover all the best ways to travel from Lake Como to Switzerland.

How to Get to Switzerland from Lake Como

Train passing mountain range and lake.

Part Mediterranean, part Swiss, is a fascinating area to explore on a day trip . Several modes of transportation are available to take you there.

The cheapest way to travel is by bus, which will take about an hour and 16 minutes. Not bad when you consider the ticket is about $6 when you book with Flixbus .

You can also rent a car for a half-hour do-it-yourself drive, which is a good choice for the freedom of movement. We recommend using RentalCars.com to compare prices across multiple rental car companies.

You won’t necessarily need a car in Lugano, though. The public transportation throughout the city is fantastic and cheap. If you’re a guest of a hotel or campground in the area of Ticino, which encompasses Lugano, you can ride the trains, busses, and boats for free with the Ticino Card .

The card also gets you discounts on attractions. Still, if you want to visit the area outside the city, especially Bellinzona, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, you’ll likely need a car.

The third and most European method of getting to Switzerland from Lake Como is by train. The trains are fast–less than 40 minutes–and inexpensive. Check train prices on Trainline to get the best possible time and price for your trip.

A tunnel connects Italy to Switzerland. Then, you’ll make a brief stop while Swiss border patrol takes a walk-through, and the crew switches from Italian to Swiss. There’s a flurry of announcements in many languages welcoming you to Switzerland. Then you’re off again to Lugano, where you’ll arrive on time…always.

They don’t mess with transit times around here. The train station is uphill from town. Once you leave the station, you’ll see you can ride the funicular to the city center or walk down and enjoy the view and your day.

Depending on the time of year and how much brilliant sunshine you’re getting, you may want to explore the museums and squares of Lugano. You can head to the mountain hiking trails and explore the surrounding summits.

OR, if it’s the middle of summer and the lake is beckoning you instead with shimmering turquoise waters, head to the swimming complex of Lido di Lugano for a cooling dip.

There, you’ll find an Olympic-sized swimming pool, green spaces to work on your tan, and a relaxing beach on the shores of Lake Lugano.

Italy to Switzerland in 25 Minutes: A Day Trip From Lake Como

Bellinzona, Switzerland

Sharing is caring!

It wasn’t until I zoomed in on a map of Lake Como, looking for nearby places to visit, that I saw how close it was to Lugano, Switzerland. I then decided I’d spend a few nights in Switzerland, just to say I’ve been. Little did I know, I could get from Italy to Switzerland in just 25 minutes. And while Lugano is the perfect day trip from Lake Como, I happened to stay there a few nights although I only recommend two nights maximum.

Italy to Switzerland

My favorite thing about Lugano is the fact that I didn’t need to try and decipher yet another language as this town is located in the Italian speaking region of Switzerland. Three of the four national languages of Switzerland are Italian, French, and German, so if you know any of those, you’re good to go.

How to Get From Italy to Switzerland

The simplest way to get from Italy to Switzerland is by train although driving is fine too. I bought a $23 train ticket from raileurope.com to go from Lake Como to Lugano and the ride was a breeze. While my ride took exactly 39 minuets, the quickest route is 25 minutes. Driving time is typically 35 minutes so if you insist on driving, it should be an easy trip. Do keep in mind that you’ll have to find somewhere to park once in Lugano.

Check car rental prices here .

Looking at Lugano via map and in person reminds me so much of Lake Como, but once you see the two in person you can tell the difference. The areas around the lake are also vastly different as Lake Como seemed a lot more lively whereas certain parts of Lake Como seemed deserted to me. I could walk blocks over from the lake and maybe see a few other people on the street. I think the area is more akin to a downtown area that isn’t busy on weekends but you’re liable to see people going to and from work.

Easy Day Trips From Lugano

I hope no one is offended by this, but I didn’t feel as though Lugano had all that much to offer. The one person who was in my hostel longer than me actually took day trips every day, which is why I don’t recommend staying here more than two nights. There were exchange students everywhere so if you’re younger than 22, you may have a more exciting time than I did. However, the best thing about this area are the easy day trips from Lugano.

Day Trip from Lake Como

Day Trip to Lake Como, Italy

If you didn’t spend time in Lake Como prior to coming to Lugano then I highly recommend giving it a visit. Read here for my top recommendations of things to do in Lake Como. Some of my recommendations include visiting Bellagio, taking a walking tour of old town Como , and having a dining experience at a locals home.

Bellinzona, Switzerland

Bellinzona is home to three medieval castles: Castelgrande, Montebello, and Sasso Corbaro. All three castles make one UNESCO World Heritage Site and you can purchase a ticket to tour them here . Because I had such trouble finding things to do in Lugano, I hopped on the train to Bellinzona one morning and walked from castle to castle and roamed around the grounds. While I’ve seen castles further east in Europe, they definitely weren’t medieval. This was a very cool experience and one of the best day trips from Lugano.

Bellinzona, Switzerland

Also check out this amazing food tour that allows you to taste the area of Bellinzona like a local. This self guided tour leads you to four places that are all within walking distance of each other. Bellinzona is definitely a walkable city so once you get off of the train you can either get around on foot or hop on the bus.

Zurich, Switzerland

The train from Lugano to Zurich takes just a little over 2 hours and for some of us, that’s an easy day trip. Since Lugano is located in Switzerland’s Ticino region, the Italian speaking region, Zurich is a stark contrast. Also anticipate the weather being much cooler in the northern city of Zurich.

If you decide to spend a full day in Zurich, consider purchasing the Zurich Card . The pass, valid for 24 or 72 hours, can help you save on museums, restaurants, attractions, and tours.

Castelgrande

Also be sure to check out these tours in and around Zurich:

  • 4-Hour City Tour by Ferry, Cable Car and Coach
  • Thermal Baths and Spa with Panoramic Views
  • 2-Hour Sightseeing Bus Tour
  • Day Trip to Grindelwald & Interlaken

San Bernardino, Switzerland

San Bernardino is a village in Switzerland known for its mountains. The San Bernardino Pass is extremely popular among hikers and because it’s located in the Swiss Alps, it’s a great place for skiing in the winter as well. There are several ski resorts in San Bernardino. If you’re not into hiking or skiing, you may want to skip this area.

Milan, Italy

If you’ve never been to Milan, one of the fashion capitols of the world, then it’d be a great day trip away from Lugano. The train ride is only about an hour and after visiting Milan on two occasions, I think it’s nice for a day trip versus spending an extended about of time there.

Bellinzona, Switzerland

When researching things to do in Milan two tours will always be recommended. 1. Visit the duomo and I personally recommend exploring the rooftop of the cathedral. Grab a rooftop ticket here . And 2. seeing the Last Supper painting. Book a guided tour for that here .

The Best Hotels In Lugano

Everyone knows that Switzerland is one of the most expensive countries on earth. I even hear residents constantly complain of how much things cost, so you know it’s bad. Hotels in Lugano are no different than restaurants and other activities. They’re expensive. In fact, that’s probably what you’ll spend the bulk of your money on, so be sure to choose wisely.

Here are the 7 best hotels in Lugano, Switzerland:

  • Lugano Dante Center
  • Hotel City Lugano, Design & Hospitality
  • Villa Sassa Hotel, Residence & Spa
  • Grand Hotel Villa Castagnola
  • Hotel Walter au Lac
  • Splendide Royal Lugano

I am interested in one day trip to St. Moritz from Bellagio on Aug 31, 2022. This is for 6 adults. I will prefer Ferry+Van+Bernina Express. Please send me information and price at following email address. Thanks

Ciao Vijay, thank you for your request. We’ve replied to you by e-mail.

Have a nice day! Ciao from Bellagio

We are looking to do a Bernina Express tour to St Moritz and also a tour of Como/Varena/Bellagio. We are staying in Milan and would like to tie these two tours into 2 days to avoid having to return to Milan between the tours. Is this possible (could stay overnight in Como or St Moritz or somewhere else you can recommend

Ciao Silvana, thank you for your kind request.

We’ve replied to you by e-mail. Hope you could find a solution with our local guide.

Hi there, please could you email me so I can get details of a tour for 2023. Thank you, Jacob.

Ciao Jacob, come stai? We’ve replied to you by e-mail 🙂 Ciao from Bellagio

Hi, could you please send me more info about BERNINA EXPRESS FROM LAKE COMO – TAILOR MADE TOUR, we ( 2 ) are booked in Como July 2 – 7 we are still open for rent something in Bellagio if you have some suggestions.

Ciao Wojciech, thank you for your kind request. We’ve replied to you by e-mail 🙂 Ciao from Bellagio

I am very interested in booking this tour for 7/9 for 4 adults. We are staying in Bellagio.

Hi, We are visiting Como for 1 week in September and would like to do the Bernina Express tour ourselves from Como. Does option 1 still work above? Please confirm, thanks

Buongiorno Gary, come stai?

The do-it-yourself itinerary works, the only thing is the public transport: you always need to check the timetable because they can always vary. You can check online in the website of the ferry timetables and the train timetables.

Feel free to ask more information 🙂

Buongiorno We are travelling to Bellagio in April 2023. We are 3 adults. Please could you provide further information, including costings? thank you

Buongiorno Mona, how are you? You can send an e-mail to [email protected] and we forward your request to our guide. Grazie mille, have a nice day!

I am looking at transport from La Locanda del Cantiere to tirano and back. I intend to take the Bernina express and back. Please email me asap if possible.

Much appreciated

Buongiorno Vinod, thank you for your kind request. Regretfully we don’t offer intermediate service. You can book the tour online and then get in touch with the guide. He offers the tour from Lake Como, he’s based in Como, you can con contact him to organise the pickup. Here the tour we normally recommend: https://www.viator.com/it-IT/Lake-Como/d26113-ttd/p-120889P2?pid=P00091233&mcid=42383&medium=link&campaign=Bernina-with-Guide

We are wanting to take the Bellagio Express Train from Verena to St. Moritz and back. Both ways on the train only. How should we go about this? I’m a little confused about the tours and when there is a driving tour or multiple stops. We are fine with another stop along the way, but don’t necessarily want a driving tour. Also, is the train ride winding or is it straight with some curves as needed? I get sick on roads if it gets too winding and so never do mountains. However, I’m thinking maybe a train wouldn’t be so winding. Thank you.

Ciao Marcia, also Lake Como roads are a litle windy but if you go with a good driver who drives slow you just enjoy the views and that’s it (I suffer the car too so I know what you mean). The good thing of having a driver is that you can talk directly to him about your feelings and you can help you feeling better. That’s the good thing of a private tour with a small group. The guide/driver takes care of you.

The train is smooth and when I did it I had no problem. Anyway some coke helps me (I never drink it, just on emergencies when I travel together with a slice of lemon ☺️) The good thing of the private tour is that you don’t do the train rain twice.

All Lombardy region has windy roads but driving slowly helps you a lot!

I book like to book option 2 for a party of four adults, making sure that we get first class/panoramic car reservations. We would like to travel from Tirano to St. Moritz on the Bernina Express on Wednesday, April 17, 2024. Is there a guide service you can recommend for the ground transportation? Thank you.

Ciao Caron, thank you for your kind request. I can highly recommend this tour https://www.viator.com/en-GB/tours/Lake-Como/Bernina-Express-and-Sankt-Moritz-Private-Guided-Tour/d26113-120889P2?pid=%20P00091233&mcid=42383&medium=link&campaign=bernina organized by a local English speaking guide. His tour is complete because he has it’s own minivan and he drives you directly from Lake Como. This is great because you do the Bernina Express only once, on the way back the guide drives you back from the Maloja pass. I hope this can be helpful!

Ciao Have a nice day

Buongiorno We will be staying in Varenna and would like to book your escorted tour of St Moritz on the Bernier Express on any day for the week beginning Mon 29th April 2024 please. This will be for two adults. Thank you

Ciao, the tour I recommend is this one: https://www.viator.com/it-IT/tours/Lake-Como/Bernina-Express-and-Sankt-Moritz-Private-Guided-Tour/d26113-120889P2?pid=P00091233&mcid=42383&medium=link&campaign=Bernina-with-Guide

See the Amazing Swiss Alps and Lake Como

While touring Europe on Mediterranean cruises , passengers will have numerous Cruise Tours to choose from, including the sky-high adventures of the Swiss Alps. Traveling inland by train, visitors to Switzerland will be treated to stunning views of Lake Como while standing perched atop the continent's highest railway station, a staggering 11,333 feet above sea level.

Just 40 miles northeast of Milan , Lake Como is a magnificently blue body of water that sits peacefully beneath the snow-capped Swiss Alps. Surrounded by gardens, the lake evokes a sense of romance and melancholy that has inspired poets such as Lord Byron to compose eloquent pieces that attempt to capture the myriad of emotions one may feel while gazing across this beautiful landmark. Used as the backdrop for the pivotal romantic scene in Star Wars II: Attack of the Clones, Lake Como is the best place to share a special moment with a loved one on a Mediterranean cruise.

Further along the journey, passengers on a  European cruise will head to Jungfraujoch, a stellar peak known as the "Top of Europe." On a clear day, visitors to this high-Alpine wonderland can see the Vosges mountains in France and Germany's Black Forest, located more than 180 miles away. The Ice Palace is the highest-altitude structure of its kind and lasts year-round. Construction on this unique cave-like attraction began in 1934 when a mountain guide began to chisel away at Aletsch Glacier. The palace boasts massive ice sculptures of birds and penguins, while people line the hallways that lead to an icy bar and carved benches.

Back down the slopes, passengers enjoying a European Cruise Tour will have the chance to visit Lucerne, the gateway to central Switzerland. Situated on the shallow waters of Lake Lucerne, this beautiful town is surrounded by mountains and features great little shops for souvenirs and the country's world-famous watches. Historic houses dot this carless town and provide picturesque frescoes amid churches and bustling market squares. Lucerne manages to seamlessly combine traditional Swiss architecture with innovative design at its Culture and Convention Center. As a landmark of the city, this beautiful structure complements the calm waters of Lucerne Lake without overpowering surrounding historic buildings.  View Europe cruises .

A culinary tour of Ticino, the Swiss canton with Italian influences

The Swiss canton on the Italian border blends Mediterranean and mountain cuisine with charcuterie, honey-sweet panettone and floral wines serves against a towering Alpine backdrop.

Colourful waterfront upon a lake with fishing boats and palm trees

Switzerland’s Gotthard Base Tunnel is the longest and deepest railway tunnel in the world. Trains burrow for 35 miles beneath snow-capped Alpine peaks, plunging to depths known mostly to miners and single-celled organisms. Board a train to journey through it, and you can bear witness to this feat of engineering, and with a window seat you also see how this tunnel divides two different worlds.

North of the Gotthard, you’re in Switzerland, among meadows where cowbells clang and kitchens serve stew and strudel. When the train re-emerges into sunshine, south of the tunnel, palms begin to displace conifers trackside and the hiss of espresso machines can be heard in station cafes. And when the balmy breath of the distant Mediterranean drifts in through an open carriage window, you understand that, in traversing the tunnel, you’ve made the journey from Northern to Southern Europe.

Specifically, you’ve arrived in Ticino, the Italian-speaking canton of Switzerland that in many ways resembles Italy. Here, Vespas stop for you at zebra crossings and statues of William Tell cohabit with those of Dante Alighieri in the elegant town squares. And although food is treated with the same reverence as in that peninsula to the south, it’s   tempered by Swiss precision. There’s certainly much to look forward to when locals glance at their expensive watches and realise it is lunchtime.

It’s noon when I disembark the train in Ticino’s biggest town, Lugano, perched where green foothills meet the vast blue lake of the same name. I’m met by guide Anna Bezzola and taken to a local deli — Gabbani — for my initiation into the rites of Ticinese cuisine. Sausages the size of artillery pieces dangle from the ceiling. Jars of porcini are stacked in pyramids. Fruit panettone hint at the influence of Milan, which is just over an hour away by rail.

Orange soup in a bowl topped with cream surrounded by conkers

Wandering around Gabbani, the aromas of Ticino’s prize produce hits the nostrils: the semi-hard Alpine cheeses that are often produced in remote mountain farmhouses using recipes guarded by jealous custodians and the high ranges that enclose them. Gabbani’s Alpine cheeses are like ancient stones — their exteriors coarse and craggy — until the slice of a knife discloses their young, buttery core. We try a few, including sweet piora and the slightly nuttier alpe manegorio. Anna explains that the pastures the cheeses are named after shape their flavours — cows on south-facing meadows graze on different flora to those on north-facing ones. “Environment is everything,” she explains. “Sometimes you can almost taste the barn.”

Beneath the pastures lies the literal and metaphorical bedrock of Ticinese cuisine. The next day we drive north into the valley of Vallemaggia. Here, Ticino’s topography is steep and high: snowy mountaintops mingle with passing clouds; waterfalls slip through chestnut forests to a valley floor pungent with wild garlic. All around is the detritus of rockfalls dispatched from the summits — and hidden beneath them Ticino’s famed grottoes.

Put simply, a Ticinese grotto is a natural subterranean space dedicated to storing produce — meats, cheeses and wines — a relic of an age before electric refrigerators. You see   them across Ticino — from the outside, they can resemble hobbit houses, with their tiny doors and bits of brickwork. They stay warm in winter and cool in summer — and it’s often summer when their padlocks are unlocked and their contents uncorked or unpacked to be shared at granite tables outside   in the sunshine.

“The grotto is where people congregate,” explains Anna as we explore a complex of them in the village of Cevio. “It’s where cuisine connects to geology.”

Inside their crypt-like spaces is a deep, damp silence that whispers of cheeses and   wines growing venerable. In more recent   times, the concept of the grotto has evolved: some serve charcuterie to passersby,   others offer hot food. In a wider sense, the word   ‘grotto’ has been applied to any restaurant serving hearty mountain dishes and wine in   tiny china mugs emblazoned with the flag of Ticino. At a   grotto, you find a Mediterranean spirit of   epicureanism. But there’s also a pragmatism   characteristic of mountain folk, stashing their bounty through the seasons, patiently waiting until the day the little door creaks open again.

Train crossing over a raised bridge in the middle of a green valley

An hour south, in the village of Arogno near Lugano’s south shores, Gabriele Bianchi has a technique for avoiding bee stings. “You have to pretend to be an astronaut,” he says, moving through a swarm with deliberate, zero-gravity movements. “You should go slowly — and don’t be afraid: they can sense fear on you.”

Gabriele is harvesting some of the first honey of the season at his farm in the hillside village. With a nervously outstretched finger I scoop some from his hive: it tastes richly floral with the tang of false acacia (whose nectar the bees have plundered of late). Soon, Gabriele says, the honey will have a flavour of chestnut, as those trees, in turn, begin to flower.

Beehives are characteristic of Ticino and a mainstay of Gabriele’s organic farm, Azienda Agricola Bianchi. Just 25 years old, the farm takes inspiration from a more distant era, when self-sufficient smallholdings rather than corporate monocultures defined the Swiss hills. The principle, Gabriele insists, is that everything works together — his wildflower meadows support the bees, a flock of geese munch bothersome weeds, while herbs thrive in the shade beneath vines. In ages past, such an approach was necessary for farmers inhabiting heights far beyond the reach of tarmac roads. Today the emphasis is on sustainability.

Sitting under a pergola in late-afternoon sunshine, we savour some of Gabriele’s wines — made with johanniter and solaris grapes, common varieties in Switzerland. This being Ticino, we toast in French, German and Italian before sipping and savouring the view. Above us, bursts of cultivated edelweiss; beside us, young olive trees imported from Lake Como’s shores. They’re ambassadors from separate ecological worlds — and the farm is poised to make the most of both.

“It’s about picking the fruits of the land,” says Gabriele. “And doing it with knowledge inherited through generations.”

Only a few generations ago, Ticino’s uplands were much busier. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, mountain communities emptied out as people sought new lives in France or the US sooner than suffer another hard winter of Swiss snowdrifts.

Not so long ago there were 400 residents in the highland hamlet of Vergeletto. Today, that figure is closer to 40 — one of whom took it upon himself to revive an ancient culinary tradition, and thus revive the fortunes of the village.

Man stands in front of a stone watermill wearing a straw hat and checked shirt holding a sack

Ilario Garbani restored Vergeletto's watermill in order to produce farina bóna, a sweet-flavoured flour once widely eaten across Ticino.

Balancing a straw hat on his head, Ilario   Garbani shimmies down a timber beam   to open a sluice gate. With a creak, his restored watermill chunters slowly into life. Outside, a mountain stream crashes about the paddles, while inside a millstone whirrs, casting off a fine powder. This so-called ‘good flour’, farina bóna — made from roasted corn — was once eaten widely across Ticino but later partly displaced by more versatile maize and all but forgotten in the 1960s after the last miller passed away.

Ilario, a former teacher, interviewed elderly residents about their memories of the mill, and rebuilt its mechanisms from scratch. His sweet-flavoured flour has found its way into everything from craft beer to ice cream and pasta dishes — in its smoky notes you can almost taste ancient winters by the fireside in a mountain hut. It’s coveted by local restaurants, and visitors make their way to Vergeletto to seek it out.

“It’s about food,” Ilario tells me. “But it’s also about the past: experiencing the same flavours as our forebears.”

There’s something hypnotic in watching the flurries of farina bóna floating from the millstone — like parmesan being grated over pasta, or snowfall on a Swiss mountaintop. Soon after, a bag of farina bóna drifts into the Gotthard Tunnel — stashed in my luggage on a northbound train, along with Alpine cheese and a bottle of Ticinese wine.

Where to eat in Ticino:

La Tinèra Located in Lugano’s old town, La Tinèra serves old-school Ticinese food in a rustic setting. Mains are hearty and wholesome. Try specialities like traditional Luganega sausage on a bed of risotto, or a Milanese classic, osso bucco (braised veal shanks) with polenta. Two courses from 45 CHF (£39) without wine.

La Fontana Ristorante

Pasta serves in a marble dish with tomatoes and cheese

You can expect imaginative cooking served at this superlative hilltop spot overlooking Locarno. Seasonal antipasti might include asparagus with toasted almond flakes and ginger sour cream; pastas include raviolini with vallemaggia cheese fondue. Veal mains come wrapped in local prosciutto ham. From 70 CHF (£61).

Ristorante Fiorentina Situated in Locarno’s backstreets, Ristorante Fiorentina has linen-clad tables set beneath vaulted ceilings, and a creative menu. Go for a starter of crispy polenta bruschetta with vegetable ragout, and perhaps a warming main of casarecce pasta with rabbit and truffle. Finish with farina bóna (a corn flour) mousse with brownies. From 40 CHF (£35).

Grotto San Michele Set in the ancient Castles of Bellinzona, this grotto comes with a sunny terrace offering views of vineyards and Alpine ranges. Ticinese charcuterie is served with pickles, while primi include farina bóna gnocchi. A secondi of blue cheese polenta is a must if you can manage it. From 70 CHF (£61).
