travel clinic fordsburg

The Immunization Program offers advice for travelers about vaccines, including immunization requirements and recommendations for travel to specific countries. We provide this counseling in-person at our downtown clinic. There is a $20 fee per consultation. This service is NOT provided over email.

If you have any questions, please call us at 412-578-8060 or visit our clinic downtown. See clinic location and hours .

Travel Vaccinations

Our vaccination clinic provides selected vaccines that are recommended for travel outside the United States. All vaccines are administered by our experienced team of Public Health Nurses.

Travel vaccine consultations are only offered in-person at our downtown clinic. There is a fee of $20 per consultation.

Please note: Our clinic is not a full-service travel medicine clinic and does not have travel medicine physicians on staff. We recommend medications for other travel-related issues such as diarrhea and/or malaria; however, you must call your primary care physician to obtain a prescription for these medications.

Forms of Payment

Vaccine fees for travel may be paid by cash, Visa, Mastercard, or Discover. Checks are not accepted. We also do not accept American Express. A fee will be charged for credit or debit card use. Prices for services are subject to change.

We are now able to accept most insurance coverage; please see the Accepted Insurance List (PDF, 1MB) to make sure your insurer is included. We are not able to accept health savings account or flexible spending account funds.

  • View the Immunization Fee Schedule (PDF, 136KB)
  • See our list of Accepted Insurance Providers (PDF, 1MB)

Note: If you intend to pay for services in cash or money order, please pay only the exact amount due. Change is not provided. Also, if using a debit/credit card an additional bank fee is charged. Please call 412-578-8060 for details on costs.

Malaria Prevention

Currently, there is no vaccine that protects against malaria; however, there are medications available to prevent the disease. We can help travelers determine if they need these preventive medications for malaria and which medications may work for their travel destinations.

The clinic is not able to dispense these medications or write prescriptions for them. Travelers must consult their private physicians to prescribe malaria medication. Questions concerning malaria medication’s long-term side effects, drug interactions, or impact on existing medical conditions should also be discussed with your health care provider.

If the Immunization Clinic does not provide a travel vaccine or service that you require, referrals can be made.

International Travel and Immunizations

For residents of the United States, travel outside US borders may pose health hazards which are not present within the US. Some of these health hazards may come from differences in public health practices and some may be related to the natural occurrence of organisms not commonly found in the United States.

Many resources exist for those considering foreign travel:

  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provides extensive information and advice on its Travelers' Health page.
  • The World Health Organization International Travel and Health Guide provides interactive information on health risks for travelers.
  • The Department of State website provides information on health and other travel risks.
  • The United States Customs and Border Protection Service provides legal and regulatory information that can be helpful when planning an international trip.

Immunizations and Planning Ahead

Remember to plan ahead! Complete protection during travel to some locations requires administration of vaccines weeks or even months before your trip.

If you think you will be traveling outside the US, planning your health needs a year in advance is not too soon.

Traveling with Chronic Health Conditions

If you have an existing health condition, you should discuss your travel itinerary with your physician before you leave.

Remember that there are many popular destinations at altitudes which may be uncomfortable or even dangerous for patients with heart or blood diseases. Your doctor can recommend appropriate preparation for your trip.

Traveling with Your Medications

If you are on medication, plan to take printed copies of your prescriptions with you when you travel overseas, as well as sufficient medication for your trip plus some extra in case you are delayed.

Many medications available in the United States are not available overseas and some overseas versions of medications available in the US are not of the same quality.

Try and leave prescription medications in the bottles in which they were dispensed to minimize problems you may have at customs. Be aware that some medications freely available in other countries may not be importable into the United States so be cautious about what you purchase while abroad.

If you are taking prescription narcotics, you should plan to have documentation from your physician regarding your need for such medication.

If you must purchase medications when outside US territories, be sure to do so only from reputable pharmacies. Counterfeiting of medications has been known to occur and these counterfeit drugs may lack the potency of prescription drugs and may even be dangerous.

Traveling with Pets

Domestic pets exist all over the world, but the requirements for pet vaccinations are not uniform across the globe.

Many countries, including the United States, restrict or forbid the transport of animals and even plants over international borders. Some countries, like Canada, allow US visitors to bring pets, but only when they are accompanied by a certificate signed by a veterinarian who has examined the pet within 6 months of travel.

If you are looking to travel with your pet, the following resources may be helpful in planning an international trip:

  • United States Customs and Border Protection Service
  • Animal and Plant Health Inspection System
  • Centers for Disease Control
  • United States Department of State

Please note : Many countries require a quarantine period for certain animals which may far exceed the length of time you will be traveling. Please check with the foreign consular office(s) of the countries you will be visiting for more information on animal quarantine requirements.

Taking steps before taking off

The key to an enjoyable vacation is taking appropriate health precautions before leaving home and during your trip. Our Travel Medicine team provides a complete range of pre- and post-travel medical services. We offer vaccinations for international travel, including Tetanus Toxoid, Hepatitis A, and Typhoid. While these illnesses are uncommon, they can be severe and potentially even fatal. Many of them are preventable through simple, safe, and effective measures.

A physician evaluates every patient, and a plan is formulated based on the traveler’s itinerary, medical history, and current medications.

Completing a recommended immunization plan before departure is an essential way to prevent travel-related diseases. Many vaccines take at least  4  weeks to achieve maximum effectiveness, so be sure to plan well in advance of your departure date.

If you should fall ill during a trip abroad, our Travel Medicine Service team can provide you with comprehensive care to get you healthy and ready for your next adventure.

What are travel vaccinations?

Travel vaccinations are the immunizations you need to stay safe when traveling abroad. Specific vaccines are required for travel to certain countries. Others protect you from illnesses that are more common in other countries than in the U.S.

Getting the proper vaccinations can help you avoid getting sick during your trip. It also helps lower the risk of bringing a disease back home or spreading it to others.

Who needs travel vaccines?

Most people should get travel vaccines before visiting another country, even if you’re traveling for pleasure or to visit loved ones. These people may also need to get travel vaccines:

  • Business or government travelers
  • Employees of a nongovernmental organizations (NGO)
  • Humanitarian aid workers
  • Parents planning to adopt a child from another country
  • Students in a study-abroad program or on spring break

Required vaccinations for travel

Before you travel, you should make sure you’re up to date on all your routine vaccinations, such as:

  • Chickenpox (varicella) vaccine
  • COVID vaccine
  • Measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine
  • Meningococcal vaccine
  • Pneumococcal vaccine
  • Polio vaccine
  • Shingles vaccine
  • Tetanus-diphtheria (Td) vaccine

Depending on your history and the country you’re visiting, you may need additional travel vaccines:

  • Dengue fever vaccine
  • Hepatitis A and B vaccines
  • Japanese encephalitis vaccine
  • Meningitis vaccine
  • Rabies vaccine
  • Typhoid vaccine
  • Yellow fever vaccine

When should I get travel vaccines?

Experts recommend visiting a travel clinic at least four to six weeks before your trip. It takes several days or weeks for your body to build up adequate immunity after receiving a vaccine. Many vaccinations also require more than one dose. Seeing a health care provider at least four weeks before your trip helps ensure you have enough time to get the right care.

How long before travel should I get the hepatitis A vaccination?

You should get the hepatitis A vaccination several months before traveling to a country where the disease is common. Hepatitis A is a two-dose vaccine series given six months apart. Getting the two-dose series will provide the most protection against hepatitis A. However, if you don’t have enough time to get both doses before your trip, receiving just the first dose will still provide some protection.

Where to get vaccinations for international travel

Your primary care provider may offer the routine vaccinations you need before travel. However, most primary care providers don’t carry the vaccines required for international travel. When visiting another country, the best place to go is a travel clinic.

At these clinics, travel medicine specialists discuss your itinerary with you and provide personalized guidance to help you stay safe. They recommend vaccines and give you any necessary immunizations onsite.

What to expect during your visit to the travel clinic

Before your travel clinic appointment, please print and fill out the traveler history form (PDF) . This form provides us with the necessary information to make the appropriate recommendations about your health and safety. You may need to gather information from multiple sources, so please allow plenty of time to complete the form before your visit.

You’ll need to bring your completed traveler history form to your appointment along with your:

  • Health insurance card
  • Photo identification to verify your insurance, such as a passport, driver’s license or government ID
  • Travel itinerary
  • Vaccination records

You’ll meet with one of our travel medicine specialists to review your itinerary and medical needs. This provider:

  • Answers your questions
  • Evaluates your current health and medical history
  • Prescribes medications as needed
  • Provides vaccinations as needed

Plan for your appointment to last around 90 minutes. We recommend you receive all your travel vaccinations at one location for a more accurate health record.

Travel clinic services

Our travel clinics provide exams, vaccines and medical treatment before you visit another country. We also offer:

  • Contact information for local doctors and emergency facilities in the countries you plan to visit
  • Corporate accounts if you have employees who need our services
  • International Certificate of Vaccinations or Prophylaxis (ICVP)
  • Medical examinations for immigration
  • Medications for travel conditions such as traveler’s diarrhea, altitude sickness and malaria
  • Personalized advice, information about potential risks at your destination, and appropriate precautions based on your age, health history and itinerary
  • Recommendations for travel first aid kits
