If you’re like me, you’ve seen Air Europa’s name multiple times as a member of the SkyTeam alliance and wondered more about it. However, I had never flown the Spanish airline until recently. After booking my flights, I had the same question you might have: What is flying Air Europa like?

Specifically, what’s it like for short-haul flights within Europe? Long-haul business class to the U.S. is likely a different beast; after all, airlines tend to put their best foot forward for those flights. But what would I get for 2 separate flights, both just over an hour, inside Europe?

Here’s a review of my experience flying Air Europa from Porto, Portugal, to Madrid, Spain, and onwards to Málaga, Spain, at the end of February 2024.

Let’s start with what I liked about my 2 flights, which were both on Boeing 737-800 aircraft. My wife and I took both of these flights on the same day in a single reservation, from Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport (OPO) in Porto through Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD) to Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport (AGP) in southern Spain.

On-Time and Organized

Both of our flights left on time, and the gate crew did one of my favorite things in the world: They turned away passengers who tried to board before their group was called. We had boarding group 3, and the people in front of us on the MAD-AGP sector had boarding group 5. When it was time to scan their boarding passes, the employees told them to get out of line and wait for their group. Fantastic!

Beyond the boarding process, check-in was organized, the bathrooms on the plane were kept clean, and everything the crew did felt organized, such as announcements and inflight services.

Partner Booking Options

As a member of the SkyTeam alliance , Air Europa flights can be booked through all alliance partners, such as Delta SkyMiles or Flying Blue miles.

Cheap Cash Fares Available

However, you may not want or need to book with partner miles. Cheap cash fares are available on many Air Europa flights within Europe. Most days of the week, nearly any time of the year, you can book the flights we took for $80 per person .

Granted, you’ll pay more if you want to choose your seat, get a preferred seat with more legroom, or check a bag. But inexpensive fares on Air Europa are available.

When paying for a flight — or just paying the taxes and fees on an award ticket — pay with one of the best credit cards for airfare to maximize your rewards and benefits. I used The Platinum Card ® from American Express , which earns 5x points per dollar spent on flights  purchased directly with the airline or with AmexTravel.com (up to $500,000 per year, then 1x).

Space To Work

Unlike airlines I’ve flown with similar low-cost fares, the tray tables were still a great size . Here’s my 13-inch laptop on the tray table for comparison.

The seatback pocket was a generous size as well. This definitely wasn’t Ryanair , which you might think of when you see the cost of some Air Europa flights.

Cheap Inflight Food and Drinks

Another thing that really surprised me was the cost of food and drinks for sale on the flights. I’m very used to U.S. airlines ripping me off for a few crackers with some hummus. Paying €5.50 (close to $6) for a muffin and a juice or coffee seemed pretty reasonable by comparison .

Combos were available to save against the price of buying items individually.

However, not everything was roses. There are a few areas where Air Europa left us wanting more.

Full-Service Cost, Budget Airline Amenities

It seems like every airline is cutting back on inflight services these days, and Air Europa was no exception. I wasn’t expecting a full meal on these short flights, but at least you get a drink and maybe a cookie on a short flight in the U.S. With Air Europa, we paid for anything we wanted to consume .

There also was no entertainment system at the seats … not even a music option accessed by plugging your headphones into the armrest.

Minimal Space

In this aspect, Air Europa definitely felt like a low-cost airline. Spacing between rows of seats was tight. I’m 5 feet 10 inches tall, for reference, and my knees were nearly hitting the back of the seat in front of me . If you’re much taller, good luck.

The planes had business class seats at the front, providing some extra space but not much beyond that.

You can pay for “XL seats” in the exit rows. But anyone not forking over €30 to €40 or getting upgrades from elite status will wind up in the seats we had.

Minimal Information From Employees

There was a desk agent on the phone at the check-in desk who was still on the phone when it was our turn to check in and remained on the phone throughout the process . Thus, he didn’t tell us anything at all. Not even the location of our gate, which seemed pretty important.

Air Europa very much felt like a do-it-yourself airline. The check-in agent simply waited for us to hand over our passports and put our luggage on the scale — no talking involved.

This sizer for hand baggage was available near the check-in desks, and you could test out your bag on your own. Beyond that, flight crews didn’t help passengers find their seats, chat with customers, or talk in any way that went beyond absolute necessity. There’s a happy medium between “lips are sealed” and “won’t shut up” for airline employees, and Air Europa could improve by moving into it.

We got from A to B efficiently, cheaply, and safely. At the end of the day, that’s what matters most. Were we impressed by Air Europa after our short-haul flights in Europe? Not really. But we also didn’t hate it.

We earned a few miles from paid flights, got where we wanted to go, and didn’t receive any frills along the way . Employees weren’t talkative by any stretch of the imagination, but at least they enforced boarding groups and didn’t overcharge for inflight food.

Air Europa Flight Check In

When it comes to checking in for your Air Europa flight, you have several options to choose from. Whether you prefer the convenience of online check-in or the traditional check-in counter at the airport, Air Europa has got you covered.

If you want to save time and skip the queues at the airport, online check-in is the way to go. Air Europa passengers digitally verify passports with Amadeus Travel Ready

Move allows passengers to save time by reducing queues at the airport

 International passengers traveling with Air Europa are now able to digitally verify their passports before they arrive at the airport. 

Supporting Air Europa’s goal to offer a better traveler experience by allowing passengers to save time by reducing queues at the airport. 

New, digital experiences are a top priority for travelers, with the 

Amadeus has confirmed that Air Europa is deploying its Travel Ready by Traveler ID product suite.

The full suite of products are designed to make travel easier by automating and digitising the document verification process. 

This news comes after IATA Global Passenger survey finds that 75% of travellers would like to use biometric data over passports and boarding passes. 

The study also indicated that travellers are keen to streamline certain processes away from the airport, with check-in and immigration procedures as their top priorities. 

Air Europa is deploying Amadeus Travel Ready by Traveler ID solution which is a full suite of products making travel easier by automating and digitising the document verification process.

The technology gives peace of mind for travelers, allowing them to verify the compliance of certain documents before heading to the airport. 

International passengers of Air Europa can now use this new feature during the online check-in, through any of their favorite digital channels (mobile or desktop). 

Once a passport has been verified, passenger status will automatically be updated within the airline system as SKYCLEARED, saving time by speeding up the manual document verifications at check-in, bag drop and boarding and consequently reducing queues. 

In the future, Amadeus Travel Ready will not only offer the possibility to Air Europa’s passengers to verify other documents such as visas, but will also facilitate biometric identification processes at the airport via the passengers’ mobiles. 

The solution will provide capabilities to match key travel credentials with biometric facial data that will be used for identification at the different airline touchpoints. 

Estelle Leray, alliances director and head of customer experience of Air Europa, said: “We are very excited with this new solution as it aligns perfectly with our innovation strategy. 

"We want to deliver the experience our customers anticipate: an easy and smooth journey. We are looking for the development of biometrics enrolment capabilities which will truly enhance the experience for both our customers and agents.”

Air Europa was one of the first airlines to implement Amadeus’s digital health verification solution, allowing for the verification of COVID-19 documents before a passenger arrived at the airport. 

Amadeus has verified more than 25 million health documents since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. 

Francois Blanc, managing director, Traveler ID of Amadeus, said: “The digital verification of travel documents is accelerating, and Amadeus Travel Ready allows carriers to offer an enhanced experience for passengers. 

"This is just one example of how Amadeus is able to support the travel industry with innovative, traveler-centric initiatives, utilizing digital identities.”

Amadeus Travel Ready is aligned with the IATA One ID initiative, which aims to further streamline passenger journey by promoting advance sharing of information, contactless technologies and biometric options.

Once upon a time, the requirements for international travel weren’t all that complicated: always a passport, sometimes a visa.

Today, to leave one country and enter another is to contend with confusing rules and restrictions that continue to change as borders reopen and travel resumes.

Americans will encounter varying health protocols while traveling abroad. France is allowing vaccinated visitors from a short list of “green” countries — which includes the United States — to enter without restrictions. Greece and Lebanon are, too. But since January, everyone traveling to the United States has been required to take a Covid test within three days of their flight. That applies to residents and visitors, vaccinated and unvaccinated, alike.

Although vaccination requirements are set by countries, not airlines, airlines are not allowing passengers to check in for international flights without first verifying whatever documents are required, including vaccination records and virus tests.

What that means logistically depends on the airline — and sometimes the airport. Passengers on Delta Air Lines flights, for example, will have their documents verified in-person by a check-in agent and again by a gate agent before boarding. United Airlines passengers are cleared for check-in after the necessary documents are verified in person or online at United’s Travel-Ready Center , an online hub that tells confirmed ticket-holders what’s required, based on their destination. (The digital option allows carry-on die-hards to get a boarding pass without an in-person check at the airport.)

Depending on a multitude of factors, including where you’re going and how airports are set up, you should also expect to produce proof of vaccination at other touch points along the “getting there” part of the trip, including at customs and immigration after landing.

There are a bunch of new digital health pass initiatives that verify and store vaccination records and test results, including one from Clear, the biometrics company. Digital passes provide another layer of safeguard and allow you to easily show proof of vaccination when asked, whether it’s by a check-in agent at an airport or a host at a restaurant where indoor dining is reserved for vaccinated patrons. But because digital passes are nonstandardized at this point, and are accepted at a venue’s discretion, it’s important to always have your physical card when traveling, as well. Treat it like a passport or driver’s license; as in, something you would never leave home without and something you’re asked to routinely pull out on command while traveling.

In addition to vaccination records and test results, many international destinations are also requiring that health declaration forms be filled out before arrival. The Delta Discover Map is a handy online tool for keeping the dizzying mess of what’s required, and where, straight.

My husband and I purchased plane tickets to the U.K. and Copenhagen for late September. In the fine print of Denmark’s updated policies, “fully vaccinated” is defined as: “You must have received your final dose of vaccination at least 14 days, but no more than 180 days, before traveling.” But because my husband was vaccinated in early February, he will be outside the 180 days when we visit. Denmark has reopened for fully vaccinated American travelers and those from several other countries. But as if to underscore the ragtag, in flux nature of the nitty-gritty of travel in the Covid era, the rules have evolved further in the few weeks since. To boot: When I emailed Visit Denmark, the country’s tourism organization, a spokeswoman directed me to the press office for the Danish Health Authority, where a spokesman steered me to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where a spokeswoman sent me to the Ministry of Justice.

A few days later, a spokesman from the Danish Ministry of Health emailed with news: As of July 2 , vaccinations are now “valid” for 12 months.

Long story short: Wherever their desired destination, travelers should expect country-by-country requirements to shift, so it’s important to continue to check for updates and book tickets that can be changed or canceled without penalty.

This winter, while living in Barbados, I received two properly spaced doses of Covishield, the version of the AstraZeneca vaccine that was manufactured in India, as well as a temporary vaccination certificate that includes my United States passport number and other essential information. I’m planning a trip to Germany and Italy in September, and I’m wondering if the European Union will recognize my Barbados vaccination certificate. Tom

The Barbadian Ministry of Health and Wellness is in the process of issuing electronic certificates to everyone who’s been vaccinated in the country, including those who initially received temporary certificates. The new certificates will feature a barcode and security seal, and can be requested by phone or email.

Although Covishield was approved for emergency use by the World Health Organization in February, it has not yet been formally authorized by the European Medicines Agency, the branch of the European Union that oversees the scientific evaluation of medicines and vaccines. By contrast, vaccines manufactured by Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson, plus the version of the AstraZeneca vaccine that was manufactured in Europe, have all been authorized by the E.M.A. Those are also the four that have been approved by the European Commission for the EU Digital COVID Certificate , which is designed to ease travel within Europe.

In considering who’s allowed to enter for nonessential travel, some European countries are still taking their cues directly from that list. But because individual countries can also choose whether or not to accept other vaccinations as proof of immunity, Germany, Iceland, Belgium and a growing list of others , including France, are now accepting Covishield. Italy isn’t yet, but travelers coming from elsewhere in Europe can also take a virus test to enter, even if they don’t possess the needed proof of vaccination.

In an email, a spokeswoman from the E.M.A. said the agency “has not received a marketing authorization application for Covishield. Should there be any change we would communicate about it.”

“The decision on entry in the E.U. is a Member State competence,” a European Commission spokesman said in an email. “However, in order to ensure a coordinated approach across the E.U., the Commission is discussing these vaccines — those that correspond to E.M.A. authorized vaccines, and vaccines listed by the W.H.O. — with the Member States in the Health Security Committee.”

In short, keep a close eye on Italy and other E.U. countries, because they may add Covishield to their lists of vaccines that prove immunity and exempt travelers from testing and quarantine.

What Are the Advance Booking Requirements?

To bring a pet with you on Air Europa, you’ll need to reserve a “Pet in Cabin” spot at least 48 hours prior to your scheduled departure. This is due to the advance coordination required between Air Europa and animal relief areas at airports. It also allows time for any necessary schedule changes if your pet cannot be accommodated on a specific flight due to space limitations.

Because pet space is limited, reservations are handled on a first-come, first-served basis. So the earlier you book, the better chance your pet will have a confirmed spot. You’ll receive an email confirmation once the pet reservation is made.
