How do you sort bookmarks in Safari alphabetically?

I have a lot of bookmarks in Safari and I would like to sort them alphabetically. It's a pain to do it manually, and I don't seem to find a "Sort alphabetically" menu option.

Is this at all possible?

• open a Finder window and the Safari Bookmarks window
• drag the folder(s) you want sorted from the Safari window to your Desktop
• go to Finder and open each folder, set the view to list view and then close the window
• drag the folder back into Safari’s Bookmarks window Safari will add it
• open the folder in Bookmarks and you will see your new sorted bookmarks

Note : You’ll have duplicates of bookmarks because the old ones are still there. Click on it and delete it.

In recent versions of Safari, Apple finally added a context menu entry to sort the contents of bookmark folders. To access it, go to Bookmarks → Edit Bookmarks, then right click on any folder and choose 'Sort by...':

Unfortunately, this option does not allow to sort folders on top. Instead, SafariSort may be helpful.

How to sort Safari bookmarks alphabetically

OCD users of macOS 10.13.4 rejoice! You can now reorder your Safari bookmarks alphabetically. Instead of having to settle for having Safari’s bookmarks always being in the order you created them, or having to manually drag them into the order you want, you can now have Safari sort them for you.

Why would you want to do this? Well, if you’re browsing through a huge folder of bookmarks, then having any kind of sort order is better than none. And if you’re using accessibility options — for instance if you are using screen readers because your sight is impaired — then alphabetical listings are essential.

This tip applies to your saved bookmarks. To see your saved bookmarks, got to Bookmarks > Edit Bookmarks in the Safari menubar, or type Option-Command-B on the keyboard. This brings up the bookmark page, which contains all your bookmarks, bookmarks folders, and special collections (Favorites, and the Bookmarks Menu). If you right-click on one of your folders, you get options to rename the folder, or two open all its bookmarks in tabs.

But if you’re running the latest version of macOS on your Mac, then you now have a new option when you right-click on bookmarks folder. You can now choose to Sort By to sort bookmarks alphabetically. You can sort either by the bookmark’s name, or by its address (the URL). The latter is good for gathering all bookmarks from a single website together in your list, whatever their page titles may be.

It might seem to you that this feature should have been there already. It seems like something that would have shipped a long time ago. And in fact, people have been asking for it for many, many years. According to Mac OS X Hints founder Rob Griffiths , the features was first requested in April 2003 — just three months after Safari first launched on the Mac.

In his investigations, Rob also discovered that there is an upper limit to the number of bookmarks that can be sorted: 450. If you have 450 bookmarks or fewer in a folder, you can sort it using this new option. If you have 451 or more? Tough. The option doesn’t appear in this menu.

Sort bookmarks on an older Mac with SafariSort

If you’re not running High Sierra on your Mac, then you can’t use this new feature. But you can get the same behavior using a free app. It’s called SafariSort, and it does the same thing, only in a blunter manner. To use SafariSort, you just launch the app, and click a button in a pop up window. The app will then sort all your Safari bookmarks at once. There’ no way to do it folder by folder. Still, it seems to work, and if you don’t like it, then you can always upgrade to High Sierra.

How To… Alphabetize Bookmarks In Safari

Safari doesn’t have a feature to alphabetize bookmarks or bookmark folders.

Never fear… with a few smart moves it can be done.

First, backup your current bookmarks.

• Open Safari
• Click the File menu and select Export Bookmarks…
• Save your bookmarks.
• If necessary, your bookmarks can be restored using the Import Bookmarks… command under the File menu

To alphabetize your bookmarks we need to get them out of Safari and onto the desktop.

• Go to the Desktop.
• Right click (or hold down the control key and click) and choose New Folder.
• Name the folder “My Bookmarks” and leave it on the desktop.
• Close all other Applications.
• Click the Bookmark icon in the Bookmarks Bar.

• On the left-hand side, the Bookmarks Sidebar slides open.
• Click on Bookmarks Menu in the sidebar. This reveals your bookmarks and bookmark folders on the right-hand side.
• Click on any one of your bookmarks or bookmark folders and press Command A to select all.

• Now, drag everything selected onto the Desktop into the “My Bookmarks” folder.

On the desktop, files and folders are automatically sorted alphabetically.

Next, we need to clean up Safari.

• Open Safari.
• Click the Bookmark icon in the Bookmarks Bar and the Bookmarks Sidebar slides open.
• Click on Bookmarks Menu in the sidebar to reveal your bookmarks and bookmark folders.
• Click on any of your original bookmarks or bookmark folders and press Command A to select all.
• Hit Delete. This deletes your original bookmarks as you no longer need them.

If you make a mistake don’t worry, just hit Command Z to undo your last action.

Finally, we need to bring your alphabetized bookmarks and bookmark folders back into Safari.

• Open the “My Bookmarks” folder.
• Select a bookmark or bookmarks folder. Press Command A to select all.
• Drag these items into Safari and place them in the Bookmarks Menu.
• Once again, if you make a mistake, press Command Z to undo you last action.

Congratulations. Your Safari bookmarks are now alphabetized.

How can Apple be so stupid not to provide a easy way to alpha its bookmarks. This is plum dumb to have so may good features and the hell with this.????

Another stupid mistake is there is not way to read a pdf files or anything using pages. The program will export in 6 formats, but cannot read anything, but itself. How can they make the best computer made and they do not fix minor problems, to become the world leader in word processing.

Very helpful! “A” command did not select the bookmarks so I could export them. I had to select them one by one to move as a group…not sure why, and the same to return them to Safari…selected individually and dragged back to bookmarks, but your instructions led me to the solution, it worked very well, and I thank you for solving this problem that has longed plagued me!

It’s been like this for years… Personally, I’ve given up hope it’s a feature they’ll ever include. Not sure why you had to select each group instead of all bookmarks. Hope you had a good Thanksgiving.

While this works just fine, there should be an easier way – like have the option on the bookmark toolbar in Safari. After all, don’t most people prefer their bookmarks in alphabetical order so they are simpler to locate when needed?

VERY helpful. Finally, I now have my bookmarks alphabetized! Going forward—how do I keep them that way? When I add a new bookmark, how do I tell the bookmark menu where I want it to go?

There is no automatic way. You have to go into Bookmarks and drag it to the correct spot on the list. Amazing, Apple never fixed this. – John C

This is a great idea but sadly doesn’t work for me at all – when I try and drag and drop the alphabetised bookmarks back into Safari they simply do not appear, whether I try and drop them into the sidebar or click the edit button and drop them under the bookmarks menu. Very frustrating. Do you have any alternative solutions for this perhaps?

I should clarify : all my bookmarks are in folders. It will not accept the folders back in Safari but I can drag and drop individual bookmarks – kind of pointless though as I have about 30 folders and need to be able to drag the folders with the bookmarks they contain back into Safari. Thanks.

No one left feedback on the SafariSort software. Was this the final answer? I used to be able to drag my folders into alphabetical order, but now it will insert the folder into the folder above where I am trying to insert.

Try going into Safari Bookmarks. Scroll to the bottom and click Edit. Then in the window that opens toy should be able to move your Safari Bookmark folders around – John

Hi John, I tried this too. But after I deleted the bookmarks in the bookmark menu I am unable to drag and drop the newly alphabetized list. Help? My old bookmarks albeit out of order are Gone!

Have you tried going to the Safari menu and choosing File > Import From > Bookmarks HTML File ?

At first I was clapping because finally I had found a way to alphabetize my bookmarks. However, this morning I discovered that my entire Favorites Bar was deleted and replaced with the generic and very simple favorites bar that comes with beginning Safari. They also are not in the Bookmarks folder I made and put on the desktop, although all the other bookmarks are there. When I go to Import Bookmarks, it just gives me the bookmarks I have on the desktop- with Favorites Bar erased. I don’t know how to get back to Time Machine Backup from Safari. I had sooooooo much in my Favorites Bar that I wanted handy. Any help here would be really good. Sharon

Hello John, Thank you for your thoughtful reply. I have gone to both of your linked help pages and am thinking about what to do. Meantime, I want to tell you that when I was following the process described in this column, I was never able to find the “Bookmarks Menu” you showed so I selected the bookmarks using the rest of your instructions and finished the alphabetizing. I still do not seem to have that “Bookmarks Menu”. I don’t know if that made a difference.

Also while going through the “My Bookmarks” folder I did find one of the Favorites-Bar Folders, opened it, and found the original contents. I was able t get those back into my present Favorites Bar. Couldn’t find any others though. I don’t know if I should try going into Time Machine to retrieve the old bookmarks. I have done about 3 hours of work going through these bookmarks, editing names and deleting things I no longer needed. I would not like to do that again. I will have to read your instructions again to see if I can use both sets of bookmarks to weed out / or save particular items. Hi again, Just a little update on my problem of missing items in Favorites Bar. I just noticed an item on my desktop called SafariBookmarks.html. I missed it before because I didn’t know to look for it – I was only looking for the “My Bookmarks” Folder – and ALSO, my desktop has entirely too much stuff on it.

Anyway, when I clicked on SafariBookmarks.html I found all my previous bookmarks – the original – so I assume that’s what came from the export command. I will have to click on each link to retrieve the site, but that’s ok, I have all my saved favorites and can now put them into my new alphabetized bookmarks. I am delighted.

Hi Elisabeth – Unfortunately I don’t have Safari 9.0.3 to test Safari Sort on, but according to the website it’s been tested and works on El Capitan, Yosemite and MAvericks so I can’t forsee any problems. Follow the instructions in the post to make a backup of your Safari bookmarks and you should be fine. – John C

I dragged my bookmarks out of Safari and deleted the items in safari – then sorted the bookmarks by letter in a folder on my desktop – I now want to drag those items back into safari but it is not allowing me to do so. Does anyone know how to drag these into Safari 9.0?

Open Safari – Go to Bookmarks > Edit Bookmarks. Drag your bookmarks off the desktop into this area.

These instructions where written 4 years ago. Maybe they aren’t applicable to mavericks? I ended up destroying my bookmarks. After hours of trying to do this. I did a restore from an older version of BOOKMARKS from my Time machine. I found a program called SAFARI SORT. Found I had already uploaded it in 2011. Clicked on the icon, clicked sort. clicked “alphabetical” it responded “Done”. 3 clicks… 3 second… done! All the folders and everything in them. Trickiest part is remembering you have the program?

These instructions were written for older versions of OSX. If you wish to try them, make sure you have a backup copy of your contacts in case things go wring. Backing up is mentioned below.

You may also wish to try out Safari Sort, a free App that I reviewed in November 11th, 2015 – Safari Sort – Get The Safari Bookmark Problem Sorted. Safari Sort is a great App, but it does have it’s limitations, so please make sure that you read the instructions carefully.

I’ve had SafariSort for several years and get it updated when a new version comes out. It does a good job at sorting the bookmarks, however, within a day or two the lower half of each list become scrambled again while the upper half of the list remain alphabetized. So, SafariSort sorta works!

John, thank you for this. Unfortunately, my efforts were unsuccessful.

I have 151 bookmark folders that I was able to drag into a folder; I then tried repeatedly to drag them (as a list) from back Finder to Safari, all to no avail. I get the little swirly ball for a few seconds and then nothing.

I also tried to download SafariSort, but the computer wouldn’t let me — can’t get past the Gatekeeper. When I checked my System Preferences/Security & Privacy/General, I get only two options: App Store” and “App Store and identified developers” — there’s no option for “Anywhere.” Can you advise?

More experience with Safari Sort on MAC OS 10.12.6. I have Safari Sort 2.0.2 and it works quickly and accurately to sort my bookmarks. However, the bookmarks do not stay sorted and that is an issue with Safari not Safari Sort. Of course, Sort needs to be run again when I make changes to the bookmark list. So I simply run Safari Sort daily; takes only a few seconds. It is mystifying that Apple does not fix the bookmarks management issue.

I’ve spent hours on this! Now I have deleted all of my bookmarks, but have them in a folder on my desktop. No way of dragging and dropping them back in the bookmark file. At least I didn’t delete them completely, but still a very frustrating and unproductive morning and will have to spend many more hours trying to fix it another day. Wish I never tried to alphabetize in the first place. Thanks anyway.

Hal: The reading list is meant to be a short list of temporary items. I would say that if you have enough of them and are holding on to them enough to want to organize, then you should be using bookmarks, not the reading list for those items.

Organize your Favorites in Safari on Mac

After you add websites to your Favorites, you can organize them in different folders or rearrange them so they’re easy to find.

Do any of the following:

Rearrange your Favorites: Drag them to different locations.

Show only an icon for a webpage in the Favorites bar: Control-click a webpage’s title, then deselect Show Title.

Show only an icon for all webpages in the Favorites bar: Control-click between webpages in the Favorites bar, then select Show Icons Only.

Edit the name of a favorite website or folder: Control-click the name you want to change on the Favorites page or in the Favorites bar, then choose Rename from the shortcut menu. You can also force click the name, or click and hold it until it’s highlighted, then enter a new name.

Remove a website from Favorites: Drag the website from the Favorites bar or from the Favorites area into the toolbar, then let it go. You can also Control-click the website, then choose Delete from the shortcut menu.

Show a different bookmarks folder in Favorites on the start page: Choose Safari > Settings, click General, then use the Start Page Favorites pop-up menu.

Nizhny Novgorod Oblast

Nizhny Novgorod Oblast ( Russian : Нижегородская область , romanized :   Nizhegorodskaya oblast' ) is a federal subject of Russia (an oblast ). Its administrative center is the city of Nizhny Novgorod . It has a population of 3,119,115 as of the 2021 Census . From 1932 to 1990 it was known as Gorky Oblast ( Russian : Горьковская область ).

The oblast is crossed by the Volga River . Apart from Nizhny Novgorod's metropolitan area (including Dzerzhinsk , Bor and Kstovo ) the biggest city is Arzamas . Near the town of Sarov there is the Serafimo-Diveyevsky Monastery , one of the largest convents in Russia, established by Saint Seraphim of Sarov . The Makaryev Monastery opposite of the town of Lyskovo used to be the location of the largest fair in Eastern Europe. [ citation needed ] Other historic towns include Gorodets and Balakhna , located on the Volga to the north from Nizhny Novgorod.

The oblast covers an area of 76,900 square kilometers (29,700   sq   mi) , which is approximately equal to the entire area of the Benelux countries or Czech Republic . Agricultural land occupies 41% of this area; forests, 48%, lakes and rivers, 2%; and other lands, 9%. Nizhny Novgorod Oblast borders Kostroma Oblast (N), Kirov Oblast (NE), the Mari El Republic (E), the Chuvash Republic (E), the Republic of Mordovia (S), Ryazan Oblast (SW), Vladimir Oblast (W), and Ivanovo Oblast (NW).

Nizhny Novgorod Oblast is not rich in natural resources, which are limited to commercial deposits of sand (including titanium-zirconium sands), clay , gypsum , peat , mineral salt , and timber .

The sites of Pustyn I and the settlement of Naumovka I, Krasny Bor 5 and others belong to the Mesolithic era in the Nizhny Novgorod region. Burial grounds of the Fatyanovo culture of the Bronze Age were found in the Chkalovsky, Vetluzhsky and Krasnobakovsky districts. [12]

In the course of the regional reform of Peter I in 1708, Nizhny Novgorod with the surrounding lands was added to the Kazan Governorate . In 1714, the Nizhny Novgorod Governorate was created.

On January 14, 1929, the Nizhny Novgorod Oblast was formed. [13] On July 15 of the same year, it was transformed into the Nizhny Novgorod Territory.

On October 7, 1932, the Nizhny Novgorod Territory was renamed the Gorky Territory (in honor of the writer Maxim Gorky). On December 5, 1936, the Gorky Territory was transformed into the Gorky Oblast (the Mari and Chuvash Republics were taken from the former territory). [14]

On January 7, 1954, the Arzamas Oblast was separated from the Gorky Oblast. On April 23, 1957, the Arzamas Oblast was abolished, and its territory was returned to the Gorky Oblast.

On October 22, 1990, by the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the RSFSR, the Gorky Oblast was renamed the Nizhny Novgorod Oblast. [15] [16] On April 21, 1992, the Congress of People's Deputies of Russia approved the decision of the presidium of the parliament to rename the region, amending Art. 71 of the Constitution of the RSFSR of 1978, [17] which entered into force on May 16, 1992. [18]

During the Soviet period, the high authority in the oblast was shared between three persons: the first secretary of the Nizhny Novgorod (then Gorki) CPSU Committee (who in reality had the greatest authority); the chairman of the oblast Soviet (legislative power); and the chairman of the oblast Executive Committee (executive power). After the abolition of Article 6 of the Constitution of the USSR in March 1990, the CPSU lost its monopoly on power. The head of the Oblast administration, and eventually the governor, was appointed/elected alongside the elected regional parliament .

The Charter of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast is the fundamental law of the region. The Legislative Assembly of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast is the province's standing legislative (representative) body. The Legislative Assembly exercises its authority by passing laws, resolutions, and other legal acts and by supervising the implementation and observance of the laws and other legal acts passed by it. The highest executive body is the Oblast Government, which includes territorial executive bodies such as district administrations, committees, and commissions that facilitate development and run the day to day matters of the province. The Oblast administration supports the activities of the Governor who is the highest official and acts as guarantor of the observance of the oblast Charter in accordance with the Constitution of Russia .

The unique architectural construction—the 128-meter (420   ft) steel lattice hyperboloid tower built by the Russian engineer and scientist Vladimir Grigorievich Shukhov in 1929—is located near the town of Dzerzhinsk on the left bank of the Oka River .

According to the 2010 Census, [20] ethnic Russians at   3,109,661 made up 95.1% of the oblast's population. Other ethnic groups included Tatars (44,103, or 1.4%), Mordva (19,138, or 0.6%), Ukrainians (17,657, or 0.5%), and various smaller groups, each accounting for less than 0.5% of the total. Additionally, 42,349 people were registered from administrative databases, and could not declare an ethnicity. It is estimated that the proportion of ethnicities in this group is the same as that of the declared group. [23]

According to the Federal Migration Service, 20,450 foreign citizens were registered in the oblast in 2006. The actual number of foreigners residing in the oblast as of June 1, 2006 was estimated to be over 22,000. [28]

According to a 2012 survey [31] 69.2% of the population of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast adheres to the Russian Orthodox Church , 2% are unaffiliated generic Christians , 2% are Orthodox Christian believers without belonging to any church or members of other Orthodox churches , and 1% are adherents of the Slavic native faith (Rodnovery). In addition, 15% of the population declares to be "spiritual but not religious", 10% is atheist , and 0.8% follows other religions or did not give an answer to the question. [31]

The oblast ranks seventh in Russia in industrial output. Processing industries predominate in the local economy. More than 650 industrial companies employ nearly 700,000 people, or 62% of the workforce involved in material production. Industry generates 83% of the regional GDP and accounts for 89% of all material expenditures. The leading sectors are engineering and metalworking, followed by chemical and petrochemical industries and forestry, woodworking, and paper industries. The first three sectors account for about 75% of all industrial production.

The oblast has traditionally been attractive to investors. In 2002, Moody's rating agency confirmed a Caa1rating based on the region's long-term foreign currency liabilities. [32]

The region maintains trade relations with many countries and has an export surplus. The largest volume of exports goes to Ukraine , Belarus , Switzerland , Kazakhstan , Belgium , and France . Imports come mainly from Ukraine , Germany , Belarus , Kazakhstan , Austria , Netherlands , China , and the United States .

The stock market infrastructure is quite well developed in Nizhny Novgorod, and the exchange business is expanding. Companies and organizations registered in the region include 1153 joint-stock companies, 63 investment institutions, 34 commercial banks, 35 insurance companies, 1 voucher investment fund, 1 investment fund, 17 nongovernmental pension funds, 2 associations of professional stock market dealers, and 3 exchanges (stock, currency, and agricultural). The oblast is noted for having relatively highly developed market relations. Today, the region needs serious partners interested in equitable, long-term, mutually beneficial partnerships.

Sorting Bookmarks in Safari on iPad

Is this basic function (of sorting Bookmarks alphabetically in Safari Bookmark folders) really still not available in Safari for iPhones and iPads? It was available in the early IOS platforms. Why was it dropped?

I have hundreds of Bookmarks in about a dozen Bookmark folders. I can only sort them - apart from one-by-one manually - by syncing with Firefox, but it is most unsatisfactory.

Wake up, Apple, we iPhone and iPad users should be able to Sort our Safari Bookmarks!

No. Sorting Safari Bookmarks/Favourites alphabetically is not supported.

Why? For reasons known only to Apple, this feature has not been included in recent versions of iOS/iPadOS.

Ne aware that other than Apple’s Moderation Team, Apple do not monitor these forums for comments, nor participate in the user-to-user technical conversations. Apple do however, invite submission of constructive comments and feature requests via its Product Feedback portal. For iPad and iPadOS:
