6 Things to Know Before Traveling on Amtrak

Here's everything you need to know before traveling on Amtrak.

amtrak train travel rules

Riding the rails — it's a beloved experience that many prefer to plane or car travel. There are no security lines and no traffic, plus the benefit of wider seats and more legroom. But among those who don't travel Amtrak regularly, it's common to hear complaints about ticket fares , the lack of luxury offerings more commonly seen with air travel , as well as the boarding and exiting frenzies famous in places like New York's Penn Station and Washington, D.C.'s Union Station.

We can dispel some of these myths. With a little advance planning and some well-trod intel, you can enjoy the best that train travel can offer in a way that works for your budget and peace of mind. Read on for our Amtrak tips, then get ready to sit back and enjoy the ride.

Many people think of train travel as a last-minute getaway option (and they should, last-minute fare deals are out there — more on that below), but planning ahead will always work to your advantage. "The more in advance you make your travel decision, the better off you are," says Marc Magliari, a spokesman for Amtrak. "Your best chance to get the lowest price is to book as far in advance as possible."

Booking your trip at least three to four weeks before you depart can give you drastically lower fares, often 50 percent less than what you'll see within two weeks of your departure and return dates. Magliari also notes that sleeping compartments for overnight trains often sell out farther in advance — so bear that in mind for long trips.

Know About Discounts

Booking tip.

Amtrak has a discount for those aged 65 and over, starting at 10 percent — thought it varies from route to route.

Magliari recommends that travelers head to the deals section on Amtrak's website before purchasing a ticket. There, you may find offers for 25 percent off a trip on Acela, the high-speed business class train on the Northeast corridor, or reduced fares for getaways to New Orleans or Miami.

You don't have to wait for special offers, either. Amtrak has standing discounts for children, who get half-price fares from age two to age 12 (infants under two ride for free), senior travelers , active military personnel as well as veterans, and more. Select these options when booking, and you'll regularly get a percentage off of a standard fare.

Check Out a Station Lounge

Though station lounges aren't quite up to par with some of the luxury offerings that airlines are investing in, Amtrak does have several types of private lounges for Acela Express First Class passengers, sleeping car passengers, Amtrak Guest Rewards Select Plus, and Select Executive members.

With free beverages and snacks, internet access, and TVs, as well as attendants who can help you with your trip, they're a great way to spend time before departure. Magliari also notes that this is an area Amtrak is investing in — there are new options for buying day passes to lounges, too.

Make Use of Red Cap

Carrying bags? You'll want to opt for Red Cap service, a free baggage handling service available at 12 major stations nationwide. Most travelers don't realize Red Cap is available to all travelers. Look for the people in uniformed red shirts, show them your ticket, and they'll escort you and your bags to your train, allowing you to board early. You can pick where you want to sit, and they'll stash your bags for you; upon arrival at your destination, a conductor can set up a Red Cap for you when you de-board. Note: though this is a free service, tipping is recommended — especially during heavily trafficked times, like the holidays.

Consider the Quiet Car

Several lines on Amtrak reserve one Quiet Car per train — an entire car where all passengers adhere to a blissful library-like atmosphere, eschewing cell phone use, keeping conversation to a minimum, and politely donning headphones for their devices. If you don't want to talk to your seatmate or hear someone else's music the whole ride, this is the car for you.

Join the Rewards Program

If you're interested in taking the train more than a handful of times a year, Amtrak Guest Rewards quickly becomes worth it. You earn two points for every dollar you spend on Amtrak or with partners like Hertz, Hilton Hotels, and more. You can redeem points for Amtrak reward travel (beginning at just 800 points), hotels, car rentals, and gift cards. Once you hit certain levels, like Select and Select Plus, you get more perks (upgrade coupons, lounge access), and your reward point earnings increase even more. Bonus: unused points won't expire until there hasn't been any qualifying activity for 24 months, giving you plenty of time to redeem them.

Amtrak's Baggage Policies

Learn What Types of Luggage Amtrak Allows Passengers to Bring

amtrak train travel rules

Scott Olson/Getty Images

Whether for work or pleasure, taking the train as your mode of transportation is relatively inexpensive, faster than driving, avoids traffic hassles, and allows passengers to get more work done in comparison to flying. In general, Amtrak is an excellent option for business travelers in the Northeast (and other areas, depending on your trip plans).

But before you embark, it's important to understand what types of baggage Amtrak allows you to board a train with. Many Amtrak routes (like the Northeast routes) lack baggage services, so you need to be prepared to board the train and exit with your own bags.

Carry-On Baggage

Amtrak baggage requirements  allow passengers to bring with them two personal items and two carry-on items. Each personal item must be under 25 pounds and cannot be larger than 14 x 11 x 7 inches, while each carry-on item must be under 50 pounds and no larger than 28 x 22 x 14 inches.

Carry-on baggage must be stowed either overhead or under the seat in front of you (standard Amtrak trains usually have rather large overhead areas for storing luggage). The Acela Express trains also have overhead compartments with sealable doors, which are slightly smaller than Amtrak's regional bin space but larger than many airline overheads. Usually, there are also baggage storage options at the end of some of the cars.

Keep in mind that just like anywhere else, it's a good idea to keep an eye on your luggage while you're on the train to make sure your bag isn't stolen or rifled through. If you get up to go to the cafe car, take a stroll, or go to the bathroom, make sure to take your valuables with you unless you have someone to watch them. A good tip when traveling with your valuables, electronics, travel documents, and any medicines is to put them in a messenger bag or backpack - and take it with you when you get up to move about the train.

Checked Baggage

Amtrak does offer checked baggage services on some routes and some stations, but you must check their website to make sure that the stations you're using provide checked baggage services. If they do, you may check two bags for free and up to two additional ones for $20 each. Again, the bags can't be heavier than 50 pounds or greater than 75 total inches (length + width + height). Oversized baggage (that means anything from 76 to 100 linear inches) is also $20 extra each.

Amtrak requires that checked baggage be checked 45 minutes prior to departure. Also, be aware that if your travel plans include route transfers, you need to allow at least two hours of scheduled layover time to accommodate the transfer of your checked baggage.

Special Items

Some train passengers may have special requirements due to disabilities or medical conditions. Amtrak does make some allowances for these situations. For example, standard wheelchairs, scooters, oxygen equipment, canes, and walkers are allowed but do count as one of your carry-on items. However, such devices do not count toward your carry-on or baggage requirements if you have booked a mobility-impaired fare. In addition, if you have any special requirements, it's important to check with Amtrak directly to confirm the specific details and baggage requirements and allowances as they apply to your situation.

Amtrak Guide

By train travelers for train travelers, traveling on amtrak: 5 things to know.

Coach Amtrak Car

New to traveling on Amtrak? The U.S. passenger rail service provides a variety of train routes that can be used for commuting or long-distance trips. Since funding for train travel hasn’t been a priority in the United States, Amtrak has its pros and cons, but it still offers an old-fashioned, adventurous and sometimes easier way to travel. To make your experience better, here are key things to know:

The cheapest Amtrak tickets are coach seats, which are not assigned seats, rather you find an open seat or seats in the coach or quiet car once on the train. Some regional Amtrak trains also have first class or business class tickets that are more expensive, but offer some additional amenities. On the overnight trains, you will also have the option to book sleeping accommodations, which are the most expensive ticket option. Note that meals are included when you book a roomette or bedroom.

To save money on Amtrak tickets, sign up to get an email when sales are announced. You might also qualify for everyday discounts . And if it works with your travel plans, buying in bulk or purchasing a USA or California rail pass might reduce overall cost.

If possible, book your tickets in advance ( refunds apply in some cases if you need to cancel). Amtrak fares usually get more expensive the closer you are to the travel date, largely because cheaper fares sell out.

2. Frequency

Amtrak routes can be grouped into two categories: long-distance trains and regional trains. As you might expect, the regional trains, or trains that travel in just a few states, are more frequent, with multiple train departures each day. On the other hand, long-distance routes usually only have one train per day in each direction. In general, the most frequent trains are in the Northeast, around Chicago and in California.

View the list of Amtrak routes with sleeper cars to learn about the long-distance trains that are less frequent than other routes.

3. On-Time Arrivals

Because regional trains don’t travel as far as long-distance trains, they are more likely to be on time. Long-distance trains can have delays due to yielding to freight trains across the country (sometimes delays can be more than an hour). For that reason, don’t book an Amtrak trip if you have a very time-sensitive schedule unless you are traveling in the Northeast corridor or on a regional train. In terms of punctuality, here are the most on-time routes  based on 2017 data :

  • Hiawatha (Chicago-Milwaukee)
  • Capitol Corridor (Northern California)
  • Keystone (New York-Pennsylvania)
  • Empire Service (Upstate New York)
  • Ethan Allen Express (Upstate New York)
  • Missouri River Runner (Missouri)
  • Pennsylvanian (New York-Pennsylvania)
  • Heartland Flyer (Oklahoma City-Fort Worth)
  • Northeast Regional (Boston-Norfolk)

Lastly, don’t forget to look at Amtrak’s new train tracker . You can see where your train is and view estimated real-time arrivals if a train gets behind schedule.

You can check bags at some, but not all, Amtrak stations. Fortunately, you can bring personal items and larger bags on the train as long as you follow Amtrak’s carry-on baggage policy .  View the Amtrak timetable  for your route to see if checked baggage is an option at your starting station (look for the suitcase icon). You can also look up station information on the Amtrak.com website.

For your carry-on items, luggage racks are above and under the seats in coach, and there are other storage areas for luggage, including in the sleeper cars. Be sure to pay special attention to baggage guidelines if you are crossing into Canada on a train.

Lastly, if you are traveling in a large group or need luggage assistance, look for the “red cap” desk or an Amtrak staff member wearing a red cap before your train arrives. They can help you find seats on the train and bring your bags on board (suggested tip between $10 and $20).

Amtrak trains have a cafe car where you can buy snacks and light meals. Additionally, overnight trains have either a dining car available to all passengers or a flexible meal service available to sleeper car passengers only. Learn more about Amtrak dining options on the different routes.

Otherwise, bringing food on the train is a good idea. A small cooler counts as a carry-on bag, and you can bring snacks, meals, take out food from nearby restaurants and even alcohol on Amtrak (note that to consume alcohol, you must be in a roomette or bedroom).

Special Diets : You can request kosher meals with 72 hours notice on overnight trains and 24 hours notice for Acela Express first class. Amtrak also provides some vegan meals on a first-come, first-serve basis (you only need to request a vegan meal if you are riding on Acela in first class). Note that peanut-free or allergen-free food cannot be guaranteed so be prepared with medication and/or your own food if you have a severe food allergy. Learn more about special meals .

Riding Amtrak For The First Time: 12 Things You Need To Know

Robert Marmion

If you are planning on riding Amtrak for the first time, there are a few things you should know before you board. This list will help your trip be smoother and more enjoyable, as you won’t be caught off guard by some of the thing that happen aboard an Amtrak train.

  • 1 Can You Smoke on Amtrak
  • 2 Is There a Microwave on Amtrak
  • 3 What Should I Pack For The Train
  • 4 Where Is the Food Cart on Amtrak
  • 5 Is Amtrak Ever Early
  • 6 How Much Should You Tip On Amtrak
  • 7 Do Amtrak Sleeper Car Rooms Lock
  • 8 Is There A Weight Limit On The Amtrak Upper Bunk
  • 9 Will The Train Run Out of Food If It Is Delayed
  • 10 What Happens If You Fall Asleep on Amtrak
  • 11 Do Amtrak Trains Have Air Conditioning
  • 12 Can You Make Phone Calls On Amtrak

Can You Smoke on Amtrak

Smoking is not allowed on any Amtrak trains in any part of the train. If you smoke, you can do so at a fresh air break. Trains make fresh air break stops about every 4 hours where passengers can get off and smoke. These stops last about 15 minutes and provide enough time to smoke and stretch your legs. Passengers cannot get off at shorter non designated stops.

Is There a Microwave on Amtrak

There is not a microwave available for passenger use on Amtrak. If you bring food with you to eat on the train you will not be able to warm it up no matter if you are in coach class or the sleeper cars. There is also no way to warm up water to make drinks. If you would like a hot drink or hot food you can purchase that at the cafe.

What Should I Pack For The Train

Pack light. You should have a bag of snacks and other necessities like toiletries and a change of clothes if you are riding overnight. You should also have a backpack or bag for valuables that you keep with you all the time. We’ve compiled a list of 20 must have items for your next Amtrak trip . Large bags can be checked or stored on the luggage racks.

Amtrak Luggage Racks

Where Is the Food Cart on Amtrak

The Cafe car which serves food to all passengers on Amtrak is located in the middle of the train between the sleeper cars and coach class. On Superliner trains the cafe is located on the bottom level of the observation car. Food from the cafe car can be eaten in the observation car at nice big tables, in your seat in coach, or in your sleeper car room.

Amtrak Cafe Car

Is Amtrak Ever Early

Amtrak trains can arrive early but it is rare for them to do so. They cannot depart stations early, so if a train gets ahead of schedule by a few minutes, it will be back on schedule after the next station. Unlike planes that don’t stop, the constant stops of the train factor in to the on time record being poor.

How Much Should You Tip On Amtrak

The standard tip in the dining car on Amtrak is $2-3 per person per meal. We usually leave $5 after each meal on the table. In the dining car we tip after each meal instead of at the end of the trip because there can be more than one person working in the car. The usual tip for a room attendant is $5-10 per person per night and is tipped all at once at the end of the trip.

Tips are not mandatory and you are not required to leave them. We would estimate around half of the passengers in the sleeper cars give a tip after the trip.

Do Amtrak Sleeper Car Rooms Lock

Amtrak sleeper car rooms can be locked from the inside but not from the outside. While you are in your room you’ll be able to lock the room. When you leave your room to go to the bathroom or to the dining car, the door will close, but you will not be able to lock it.

Do Amtrak Doors Lock

Is There A Weight Limit On The Amtrak Upper Bunk

We get asked this question quite a bit, so we asked a few Amtrak employees. There is not a weight limit on the Amtrak upper bunk bed. In our own personal testing of the beds, these seem really sturdy, and we would not be concerned about the weight on them. For being on a train, the beds are more solid than we thought they would be.

Amtrak Upper Bunk Weight Limit

Will The Train Run Out of Food If It Is Delayed

Amtrak trains have extra food on board in case of emergency, so if your train is delayed, Amtrak will not run out of food. In fact, they have extra menu items that you wouldn’t otherwise get. On a recent delayed trip of the California Zephyr we were served an extra meal and were given the choice to have beef stew. The train could run out of things like rolls and salads if they are late by too much.

Amtrak Food

What Happens If You Fall Asleep on Amtrak

If you fall asleep on Amtrak and your destination is coming up, an Amtrak conductor will wake you up. When you board the train the conductor will put a destination ticket above your seat to let them know which stop you are getting off at. If you are asleep when that stop happens, this ticket will help them know who needs to wake up to get off.

You should never switch seats without also moving the ticket above your head that lets them know when you need to get off.

Do Amtrak Trains Have Air Conditioning

All Amtrak trains are air conditioned. The air temperature is controlled by staff and in coach you will have no control over the temperature. In sleeper cars there are air temperature knobs to turn the air colder or warmer. In our experience though, these controls don’t do very much to change the temperature. The more effective way to adjust your comfort level is to turn the vents to either face you or be away from you. If the vents do not move on your train, you can place something between you and them to divert the cold air.

Amtrak Air Conditioning

Can You Make Phone Calls On Amtrak

Phone calls are allowed on Amtrak both in coach and sleeper cars. The only place you cannot make phone calls is in the quiet car. Phone calls should not be made anywhere with the speaker phone activated. During parts of your trip you might lose cell service if you are traveling across the country. Once the train leaves cities and isn’t near a highway you will lose service. You should always think about those sleeping around you and keep calls as quiet as possible.

A Guide to Amtrak Train Travel During the Pandemic

what to know about mask rules, service cuts, change fee waivers and more.

Passengers board a train bound for Boston on the day before Thanksgiving at Union Station on November 24, 2021 in Washington, DC.

Larry Bleiberg,

Sarah Elizabeth Adler,

After a dramatic drop in ridership during the first few months of the pandemic , Amtrak has been steadily welcoming back more customers — but it's still operating with modified policies and guidelines to keep passengers safe in stations and onboard trains.

First up:  facial coverings . As with airlines, federal regulations require all Amtrak passengers to wear masks at all times aboard trains and in stations, regardless of vaccination status and state and local laws. Refusing to wear a mask may lead to fines, denied boarding, being removed from the train and being barred from future travel.

Passengers must remain masked unless in a private room (available on long-distance routes) or actively eating or drinking while maintaining appropriate distance from other passengers.

Here’s more on Amtrak’s latest policies and practices.

Service changes

The national rail service has temporarily cut back operations due to staffing shortages fueled by the omicron variant .

Overall, it has reduced service by 8 percent, including on its busy Northeast Regional service (from Boston to Virginia). It has also temporarily suspended operation of the Silver Meteor train, which runs between New York and Miami. (Riders can still use the Silver Star or Palmetto routes to reach destinations served by the Silver Meteor.)

Nine other long-distance trains are reduced to operating five days a week, instead of daily. The affected trains include the Southwest Chief (Chicago-Los Angeles), Coast Starlight (Los Angeles-Seattle), California Zephyr (Chicago-San Francisco), Empire Builder (Chicago-Seattle or Portland, Ore.), Crescent (New York-New Orleans), Texas Eagle (Chicago-San Antonio), Capitol Limited (Washington, D.C.-Chicago), Lake Shore Limited (New York-Chicago) and City of New Orleans (Chicago-New Orleans.)

Anyone who has a trip canceled due to the service cuts will be notified and offered alternative travel plans. Amtrak says the reductions should have minimal impact because ridership remains down by 25 percent, and the schedule changes coincide with a slower travel season.

ARTICLE CONTINUES AFTER ADVERTISEMENT

At the station

Before their trips, passengers are encouraged to download the  Amtrak app , which allows you to scan an e-ticket to board and receive gate and track information on your device at certain stations — eliminating the need to crowd around departure boards.

Stations (and trains) are receiving enhanced cleaning, particularly of high-touch surfaces like door handles and countertops. At certain stations you might also see clear plastic barriers at the customer counter.

To keep station crowds to a minimum, Amtrak is also urging passengers not to arrive too far in advance. A half hour before departure is recommended for most passengers, 60 minutes for those who need help with ticketing or baggage.

And again, plan to arrive wearing a mask: Passengers are required to wear facial coverings both at the station and onboard unless they are in a private room with the door closed or actively eating and drinking while maintaining distance from others.

An empty Amtrak car is shown pulling out of Union Station

On the train

Like the  airlines , Amtrak is no longer limiting capacity and can’t guarantee an empty seat next to you for social distancing. But it has made it easier to determine if you’ll find the train crowded once you’re aboard.

When searching for travel online or on the Amtrak app, the percentage of seats sold displays next to each trip option. The number adjusts as additional seats are sold, which gives passengers the chance to switch to a train that is less crowded without a fee, although a fare difference may apply.

Private rooms, available on long-distance and overnight routes, are another option for customers hoping to keep their distance from others while onboard.

Other precautions include the removal of non-safety materials from seatback pockets, and “automatic door open” buttons that customers can tap with their foot to move between cars.

All trains are also equipped with onboard air filtration systems that Amtrak says offer “a fresh air exchange rate every four to five minutes.” Augmented onboard cleaning procedures include the use of EPA-registered disinfectant.

Food and beverage service

Onboard dining service is largely back to pre-pandemic practices.

Café service is available on most trains but is suspended on two California lines: the Capitol Corridor between Sacramento and San Jose, and the San Joaquins service connecting the Central Valley to Oakland.

For passengers in private cabins, formal traditional dining with chef-prepared meals has returned to most long-distance trains. Customers can make reservations for set mealtimes in the dining car, or they can chose complimentary room service in their private cabin.

Booking and cancellation policies

If Amtrak needs to change your reservation, it will contact you and offer you an alternative trip.

If you want to change your reservation, Amtrak is waiving all change fees for bookings made by April 30, 2022. A fare difference may apply to your new itinerary. The change fee waiver does not apply to a previously purchased fare rebooked for the same train, date and origin/destination at a lower fare. The removal of some restrictions on Multi-Ride tickets on the Northeast Corridor is extended through April 30, 2022.

Amtrak operates much of the rail network across the United States, providing an alternative form of transportation to driving or flying . But is Amtrak safe? Let’s take a look at a few common questions people may have when they consider the safety of train travel with this company.

What is the Amtrak safety record?

Like other forms of public transportation, train companies, including Amtrak, have to conform to a series of standards to maintain safety and reliability.

The U.S. Federal Railroad Administration oversees train travel in the United States and aims to assure a high level of train safety. It is also responsible for systemwide innovations and upgrades that can improve the experience and efficiency of train travel around the country. Amtrak must adhere to this body's regulations in order to operate.

Amtrak also has its own board of directors that oversees day-to-day operations and sets policy for the network. The U.S. Department of Transportation secretary (or an appointee) is also on the board.

Train crashes are unlikely, but they do happen. A 2013 study in the Research in Transportation Economics journal found that a person was 17 times more likely to die while traveling in a car compared with on a train. (That same study found that air travel is about 100 times safer than traveling by car). In short, derailments are scary, but are thankfully uncommon.

Does Amtrak have onboard and station security?

Amtrak offers onboard and station security, but you may not always see its staff in action. That’s because Amtrak has more than 400 employees both on the front lines and behind the scenes conducting safety measures. This includes Amtrak’s own police department, which is responsible for keeping passengers and train crew safe.

These employees work to deter crime on board trains as well as in and around Amtrak stations, for everyday safety and for events that may require additional support, like political conventions, large-scale community events or severe weather situations.

Is the Amtrak safe when traveling alone?

Yes, because of security patrols, it is generally safe to travel Amtrak alone. But, like in any situation, it is wise to remain vigilant and keep your eyes on personal belongings, regardless of the mode of transportation.

Luggage racks on trains can sometimes be out of sight, so it’s best to pack light so that you can keep your belongings as close as possible. If you can store them in an overhead rack, that’s even better.

Be extra aware when trains are approaching a station since someone could take your items and disembark. You can always contact an Amtrak employee if you notice something out of the ordinary or feel unsafe.

It’s wise to arrive at the station 20-30 minutes before departure so you can locate your departure platform and be fully aware of your surroundings. When you’re rushed, it’s easier to let your guard down.

A wise option for solo travelers is to choose a seat in the quiet car (if available), which limits conversation and cell phone use to provide a more comfortable travel experience. There’s no additional charge on most trains to sit here, and unless you are on Acela (the company's passenger train service along the Northeast Corridor), seats in the quiet cars are first-come, first-serve.

Another option is to purchase a business class seat for more exclusivity.

Is Amtrak safe at night?

It’s always wise to be aware of your surroundings, but like during the daytime, Amtrak employs its own security and police staff at night. The onboard staff can also address security concerns.

If you plan to sleep while on the train, be sure to protect your belongings and keep them near you as an added precaution.

On some trains, sleeper bunks or private cabins are an option and can provide more privacy and security.

Is there security at train stations?

Unlike at airports, there is usually no security check before boarding the train. This can be disconcerting for some, since it means there is no one reviewing what travelers bring aboard.

While Amtrak does prohibit certain items in carry-on bags aboard its trains, there’s generally no way to verify that passengers aren’t bringing them on the train. This means that your best chance of safety is being aware of your surroundings and reaching out to train staff if you notice something that feels off or worrying.

Amtrak safety, recapped

Generally speaking, Amtrak is a safe travel option. But, it’s wise to use good judgment and remain fully aware of your surroundings. Keep an eye on personal belongings, and don’t hesitate to reach out to staff if you notice something out of the ordinary.

🌍 Help Me, LP! How do I make the most of Amtrak’s USA Rail Pass?

Lauren Keith

Use your Amtrak USA Rail Pass to take in the country’s staggering scenery from the comfort of an observation car © Jacob Boomsma / Shutterstock

In this series, Lonely Planet’s team of writers and editors answers your travel problems and provides tips and hacks to help you plan a hassle-free trip. When an Amtrak question came across the transom, we turned to Lonely Planet contributor (and major train) fan Lauren Keith.

Question: My trip around Europe with the Eurail Pass was one of the best I’ve ever taken. Is there anything like this in the United States?

Lauren Keith: Hopping off and on trains, waking up to a new city in the morning, carrying your suitcase through elegant train stations, meeting new friends from across hostel bunk beds: taking an extended train trip in this fashion actually is possible in the United States .

Modeled on the Eurail Pass , which allows travel around 33 European countries, Amtrak’s USA Rail Pass might get you across only one international border. But the experience can be just as varied, intriguing and eye-opening as its European counterpart.

The US might have the world’s largest road network, sure – but taking a car-free “road trip” across the country is a ticket to an unforgettable adventure, and may be the most European-style journey you can have on this side of the pond.

I’ve just bought my second USA Rail Pass, and I’m starting to pack my bags for my next Amtrak sojourn. In 2021, I took to the rails on a loop from Kansas City , going through St Louis , San Antonio , New Orleans , DC , Baltimore , Philadelphia , New York City and Boston . Here’s a quick dive into the nitty-gritty of the Amtrak pass and some of the questions I was most commonly asked about my trip.

What is Amtrak’s USA Rail Pass?

The USA Rail Pass allows riders to go on 10 Amtrak “segments” within a 30-day period for a set price. A segment isn’t always the same thing as a one-way journey – any time you get off the train is the end of a segment. A one-way journey between Seattle and Denver , for example, consists of two segments because you have to change trains.

Launched in 1976, the USA Rail Pass in its current form differs significantly from the Eurail Pass, and even from previous versions of itself. Instead of regional restrictions, the entire country is now fair game, and the pass is valid for a set 30 days, and only 30 days – travelers no longer have the option of choosing longer or shorter durations.

When can I use the Amtrak Rail Pass?

Once you purchase the pass, you have to use it within 120 days (about four months). After the first segment is traveled, the clock starts ticking, and you have 30 days to take the other nine segments.

How much does the USA Rail Pass cost?

Amtrak sells the USA Rail Pass for $499 at full price – but it’s been on sale for as low as $299 a couple times in the last few years. And at this promotional price, each segment costs less than $30, regardless of length.

People sit in an observation train car looking out at the sunset on an Amtrak train, USA

What are the USA Rail Pass restrictions?

While the USA Rail Pass is pretty flexible, it’s important to know a few details before buying one.

With the pass, you must travel in coach class. Business class and sleeper cabins (which are soon to be upgraded ) are not an option, unless you want to pay for them outside of the pass at the going rate. While Amtrak’s reclining seats are far superior to those of any airline’s economy class (39 inches of legroom compared with 28 inches when flying), they can be a challenge to sleep in overnight.

Passengers using the USA Rail Pass cannot ride the Auto Train (between Virginia and Florida ), Acela trains (high-speed trains in the Northeast) or Canadian routes that Amtrak operates with VIA Rail Canada. However, these regions are still accessible to pass holders on other (slower) routes.

Riders can travel between the same two stations only twice (two round-trip journeys), so the pass is best for travelers looking to explore a larger region, or the entire country. If you’re looking to commute between cities or visit friends or family in the same place, opt for a Multi-Ride Pass instead, which doesn’t have this restriction.

Though the USA Rail Pass doesn’t have any blackout dates, only a limited number of seats are saved for pass holders on each service – which means advance reservations are highly advisable. It’s possible that some trains will be unavailable; unfortunately, the number of eligible seats isn’t shown when searching the schedules. You have to reserve seats in advance, and it’s best to book your journeys as soon as you know where you want to go, even if you haven’t nailed down all the details. If you change your mind, you can cancel and rebook any time before the scheduled departure of the train, a super-flexible option.

An Amtrak Surfliner train passes a beach and the Pacific Ocean, California, USA

Where can I go on Amtrak’s USA Rail Pass?

The country is your oyster. Amtrak’s routes roll across the US from the Atlantic to the Pacific, and from the Mexican border to stops in Canadian cities. More than 30 train lines crisscross the entire country on some 21,000 miles of tracks. Trains stop in 500 cities in 46 states, along with a handful of destinations in Canada .

How can I make the most of Amtrak’s USA Rail Pass?

That all depends on you and your travel goals. You could feel the West Coast sun along the coast in California before cozying up in a bookshop among the grays and greens of the Pacific Northwest . You could focus on the East Coast’s big-hitters, such as DC, Philadelphia, New York and Boston. The bold could even cross the country from every direction within 30 days: east from Los Angeles to New Orleans, north from Miami to Maine , west from Chicago to Seattle, and south from Vancouver to San Diego , where you can cross the border to Tijuana , Mexico , on foot.

Although the observation car might sound like the best way to soak up all the extraordinary diversity of scenery on an epic journey like that, I wouldn’t personally recommend it – unless you’re sure you’ve packed plenty of snacks and your body can handle days without fully lying down to sleep. The California Zephyr , one of the longest train journeys in the world, takes 52 hours from California to Chicago, and that’s assuming there aren’t any delays – a rarity.

Start by looking at Amtrak’s route map and deciding which stops are a priority. Remember that you don’t necessarily need to start from your home city: if you want to pack more in, you could fly or take a train (without using your pass) to a hub like New York, Chicago or DC that has multiple options for long-distance routes.

Another important factor is timing. You have 30 days to use your pass, and outside the Northeast, most routes run just once a day – or even as little as three times a week, as is the case for the Sunset Limited (Los Angeles to New Orleans). The small number of services mean that strange departure times are inevitable. My first trips on Amtrak in 2008 left from a small-town station in Kansas with two daily departures: 2:45am going south and 2:59am going north.

People in the grand waiting room at Union Station, Los Angeles, California, USA

Which Amtrak routes are the most scenic?

Amtrak’s long-distance trains are some of the most scenic journeys in the world. The Coast Starlight is absolutely worth a trip, hugging the coast so closely between San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara that you seem to hover at the cliff edge, as if on a roller coaster. The California Zephyr takes in the widest variety of landscapes, from the snow-capped Sierra Nevadas to the salt flats of Nevada and Utah to endless bends around the Rocky Mountains .

Even many of Amtrak’s stations are scenic. Los Angeles’ Union Station is an art-deco jewel with its own brewpub. Denver’s Union Station is home to an impressive food hall, and the coffered ceilings of Kansas City’s Union Station (do we see a naming trend here?) are just as gorgeous as those in Chicago and Washington, DC.

How to Plan Your First American Rail Adventure: A Step-by-Step Amtrak Train Travel Guide

If you've ever gazed out of a window and dreamed of rolling along endless tracks, passing vibrant cities, serene valleys, and majestic mountains, you're not alone. Traveling by train is more than a mode of transportation; it's a passage into the heart and soul of the country. This is the charm and allure of rail travel in America, specifically Amtrak. Amtrak's range of services is not just about getting from point A to point B. The real magic lies in the myriad experiences on offer. Whether it's the majestic mountains, sprawling deserts, lush forests, or glittering coastlines, each route has something unique to showcase.

But where do you start? How do you choose the perfect route, book the right ticket, and ensure that your journey is as smooth as the rails themselves? Don't worry! You've stumbled upon the perfect Amtrak Train Travel Guide. In the following sections, we'll embark on a comprehensive journey of planning your first Amtrak adventure. From selecting your dream route to packing your bags, managing your budget, and beyond, consider this your one-stop manual to becoming an Amtrak pro.

Step 1: Understanding Amtrak's Services

Northeast Amtrak Train

When planning a trip with Amtrak, it's important to understand the variety of services available. The options range from short-distance travels among regions to long-distance journeys that traverse the vast American landscape.

Northeast Corridor: Primarily serving the busy Northeastern United States, these trains connect major cities like Washington D.C., New York, and Boston. Ideal for business travel or city breaks, the corridor boasts affordable and frequent services like the Northeast Regional and the high-speed Acela Express .

Long-Distance Routes: For those looking to explore beyond the hustle and bustle of the cities, Amtrak's long-distance trains offer a scenic escape (although they do serves some pretty amazing cities as well). Routes like the Empire Builder, California Zephyr , Cardinal , Coast Starlight , and Southwest Chief promise a panoramic view of the diverse American countryside.

Regional State-Supported Routes: In collaboration with individual states, Amtrak offers more localized regional travel options, such as Capitol Corridor , Cascades , Piedmont , and Hiawatha just to name a few. These services are perfect for exploring specific regions and are often time competitive with driving.

Commuter Services: These are short-distance urban train services often served by local municipalities and transportation agencies rather than Amtrak, however Amtrak does operate a few of these services in the Northeast.

Understanding Amtrak's services and offerings is the first step in planning a successful rail adventure. From the fast-paced Northeast Corridor to the scenic long-distance journeys, there is something for every traveler, whether you're looking for convenience, luxury, or a way to explore unseen corners of the country.

Step 2: Selecting Your Route

Amtrak California Train Pacific Surfliner

Selecting the right route is at the heart of a successful Amtrak adventure. Whether you're a nature lover, history buff, city explorer, or simply seeking relaxation, Amtrak offers an array of routes tailored to different interests.

For Nature Enthusiasts: Routes like the California Zephyr, Coast Starlight , Empire Builder and Cascades , offering glimpses of the Rockies and Sierra Nevada, or the Cascades Mountain Ranges, showcasing the American West’s natural splendor, are perfect for those seeking scenic beauty.

For History and Culture Seekers: Consider the Crescent , connecting New York to Atlanta and New Orleans, for a journey through the heart of American history, culture, and music.

For Urban Explorers: The Northeast Corridor is ideal for hopping between bustling cities, offering convenience and connectivity. Or on the West Coast try the Pacific Surfliner Service between Los Angeles and San Diego.

For Leisure and Relaxation: Take the Sunset Limited from New Orleans to Los Angeles and indulge in a leisurely ride filled with southern charm and picturesque landscapes. Add an extra day to your trip and continue north through Texas and onto the Ozarks in Missouri aboard the Texas Eagle .

When selecting a route, several factors come into play:

Travel Time: Consider the duration of the journey. Shorter routes like the Pere Marquette between Chicago and Grand Rapids only take a few hours, while cross-country trips may last several days.

Frequency: Some routes have multiple departures daily, such as the Northeast Corridor, while others may only run a few times a week, such as the Sunset Limited and Cardinal .

Scenery: Determine what you want to see. Coastal views, mountain landscapes, or urban skylines all offer different visual experiences.

Time of Year: Some routes such as the Cardinal and Adirondack are known for their stunning autumn colors, while the Empire Builder and Vermonter provide a glimpse into a snowy wonderland during the winter months.

Connections: Check for connections to other Amtrak trains, thruway bus services, and other modes of transportation not directly served by Amtrak.

Selecting the perfect Amtrak route is akin to crafting your personalized adventure. Whether you want to immerse yourself in the wonders of nature, delve into history, explore cities, or simply unwind, Amtrak's wide array of routes offers something for every traveler. By considering factors such as travel time, frequency, scenery, connections, and leveraging available resources, you can tailor your journey to fit your preferences, budget, and schedule. The key is to align your route choice with what you hope to experience, making your train travel not just a means to an end but a significant part of the adventure itself.

Step 3: Planning Your Itinerary

Amtrak Train California Zephyr

Planning your itinerary for a rail journey is about connecting the dots between exciting destinations, scenic vistas, comfortable accommodations, and convenient transportation. Let's explore how you can craft an unforgettable adventure.

Identifying Points of Interest Along Your Route

One of the joys of train travel is witnessing the ever-changing landscapes from your window. But equally important are the destinations you'll explore. Before you embark, research the points of interest along your route. Perhaps it's a historic site, a breathtaking national park, or a lively city center. Engaging with these attractions will enrich your journey and provide memories to last a lifetime.

Exploring Layover Options, Thruway Buses, and Local Transportation Connections

Layovers can be more than just waiting for the next train. With thoughtful planning, they become mini-adventures of their own. And depending on whether you have a few hours, or choose to extend it to a few days, layovers are a great way to see a new place. Check the local transportation options available at the layover stations. Whether it's a quick subway ride to a nearby museum or a stroll through a charming downtown, maximizing layover time can add unexpected delights to your trip. Amtrak also provides numerous Thruway Bus connections throughout the system that can help extend your trip to locations off the rail network.

Hotels and Lodgings Near Stations

Accommodation planning is essential, especially for multi-day journeys. Proximity to the station can make your travels more comfortable and stress-free. Many cities have hotels within walking distance or a short ride from the Amtrak station. Look for those that cater to travelers, offering flexible check-in and check-out times, luggage storage, and perhaps a special charm that reflects the local culture.

Apps and Tools for Managing and Organizing the Trip

In our digital age, numerous apps and tools can help manage and organize your trip. From booking confirmations to daily itineraries, apps like Google Maps can streamline your travel experience. Consider downloading local maps, transit agency apps, or destination guides to keep information at your fingertips, even when offline. And always have the Amtrak App downloaded with your tickets included, this will ensure a smooth trip even if you lose paper tickets.

Tip : Take a screenshot of your digital ticket, it will make it easier to access in case you are out of cell service.

Crafting a rail journey itinerary is exciting! From identifying unique points of interest to optimizing layovers and selecting the perfect accommodations, planning is not merely a practical necessity; it's an art form and one of the best parts about travel! Embracing the possibilities of each destination, engaging with local culture, and harnessing digital tools will not only elevate your journey but help you enjoy your trip as much as possible. As you plan, remember that the train itself is not just a means to an end; it's an integral part of the adventure.

Step 4: Traveling in Comfort

Amtrak Train Dining Car

Amtrak offers a variety of options designed to cater to the comfort and needs of every traveler:

Coach Class: With adjustable reclining seats, ample legroom, and individual power outlets, Coach Class is ideal for short trips or budget-friendly travel. Seats often include personal reading lights, and free WiFi is usually available on many short and medium distance routes.

Business Class: Offering an upgraded experience, Business Class includes wider, more comfortable seats, complimentary refreshments, and free newspapers. Priority boarding and additional loyalty points make this option appealing for frequent travelers. Not available on all routes.

Roomettes & Bedrooms: Designed for privacy and comfort on longer journeys, these sleeping accommodations include convertible beds and seating, fresh linens, and towels. Bedrooms additionally offer in-room sinks and restrooms. Exclusive access to showers and dedicated attendants ensures a home-like experience.

Accessible Accommodations: Specially designed for passengers with mobility needs, these options provide easier access and adjustable features.

Observation Cars: Uniquely crafted cars with panoramic windows, these offer a communal seating area perfect for socializing and enjoying the landscape. On long-distance routes with Superliner equipment only. Other trains have similar Café Lounge cars, just without the panoramic windows.

Can you choose your seat?

While choosing your own seat beforehand is still not available for most Amtrak trips (an outdated practice Amtrak needs to change), however you can usually choose your own seat, or at least ask to move if the conductor seats you somewhere you don’t like, when you bard the train. Conductors usually assign coach seating at the time of boarding on long-distance trains. Some state-supported services and Northeast Corridor services allow you to choose your own seat once you board. Also there are no middle seats on any of the trains!

Amtrak also offers a variety of food options onboard:

Dining Cars: Full-service dining cars are found on long-distance routes, serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The menu often includes regional specialties, vegetarian options, and a children's menu. Sleeping accommodation passengers receive complimentary meals.

Café Lounge Cars: Open throughout the journey, café cars offer casual dining with snacks, sandwiches, salads, and beverages, including local wines and craft beers. These are available on basically every route in the system, short and long-distance.

Room Service: Those with Sleeper accommodations can always have their meals served directly to their room. Again free of charge.

Special Dietary Needs: Amtrak’s culinary team can cater to specific dietary needs, such as gluten-free, low-sodium, or vegan meals, with advance notice.

Amtrak also offers options for accessibility and bringing pets onboard:

Accessibility: Passengers with disabilities can request special services such as assistance with boarding, sign language interpreters, or accessible documentation. Stations typically offer ramps and elevators, and many trains include accessible restrooms.

Pet Policies: Most Amtrak routes allow small cats and dogs in designated carriers, subject to fees and availability. Service animals are accommodated according to the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Traveling in comfort with Amtrak is an essential part of the rail journey, encompassing everything from personalized seating choices to delectable dining experiences and the thoughtful inclusion of all passengers, including those with accessibility needs or traveling with pets. Attention to these details transforms a simple train ride into an unforgettable experience, enhancing the adventure and setting the stage for what's to come.

Step 5: Packing and Preparation

Amtrak Train Luggage

When it comes to traveling by train, preparation is key. But packing for an Amtrak journey is not the usual routine you might follow for other modes of transportation. It's about comfort, convenience, and aligning with Amtrak's specific policies.

A Packing Guide Tailored to Train Travel

Consider first the clothing. Versatility and comfort are vital, especially if you're embarking on one of Amtrak's scenic, long-haul routes. Think layers that can adapt to changing temperatures and are easy to take off and put back on. Also don't forget travel essentials like identification, tickets, chargers, and medication. If you're planning an overnight journey, a travel pillow and blanket can be lifesavers. Bringing entertainment like books, magazines, or downloaded movies will make your journey more enjoyable. And even though dining options are available on many routes, packing your favorite snacks and a reusable water bottle allows for personalized refreshment anytime.

Amtrak's Luggage Policies

Amtrak's luggage policies are generous but specific. Carry-on bags should not exceed 50 lbs each, and passengers are usually allowed two. Checked luggage policies vary by route, but on certain ones, you can check up to four bags, with the first two being free. If you're a musician or an avid cyclist, oversized items like bicycles or musical instruments might require special handling and fees. Always remember to label all bags with your name and contact information and be mindful of prohibited items.

Travel Essentials: Beyond the Basics

Going beyond the basic packing, understanding what to have at hand can make or break your travel experience. Here's what to consider:

Documents: Keeping ID, tickets, and travel visas easily accessible will save you stress at the station.

Chargers and Adapters: With power outlets at every seat on many routes, you'll want chargers for all your devices. If you're traveling internationally on a cross-border service, appropriate plug adapters are a must.

Snacks and Dietary Needs: If you have specific dietary preferences or needs, packing snacks or meals ensures your culinary comfort. It will also save you money.

Health and Safety

Last but not least, health and safety considerations are paramount. Personal hygiene items like hand sanitizer and wet wipes should be packed for personal cleanliness. Any necessary medication and a small first-aid kit can be essential. Considering travel insurance might be a wise precaution, too.

Packing and preparation for an Amtrak journey extend far beyond mere logistics. It's an integral part of the travel experience that sets the stage for a relaxed and enjoyable adventure. Whether it's selecting the right wardrobe, understanding luggage restrictions, or complying with health and safety guidelines, careful planning enhances the whole journey. Train travel is a unique adventure, one that begins even before you step on board. By embracing these aspects of preparation, you'll find yourself well-equipped and ready to fully enjoy all that Amtrak has to offer.

Step 6: Understanding the Onboard Experience

Amtrak Train Superliner Observation Car

The Amtrak journey is not just about reaching your destination; it's about embracing the ride itself. From the moment you step aboard, you enter a world of comfort, camaraderie, and the unending allure of the scenery gliding by. Let's explore what awaits you on this unforgettable voyage.

What to Expect During the Trip

From coastal cliffs to mountain vistas, Amtrak’s routes offer a stunning array of scenery. The ever-changing landscapes provide a captivating backdrop to your journey. And while the views are mesmerizing, it's the staff's warm hospitality that truly enriches the experience. Amtrak's crew are often more than mere service providers; they become storytellers, sharing local lore and travel tips, enhancing your connection to the places you're traversing. More often than not, especially when traveling in sleeper cars, you will have an amazing experience with Amtrak staff. Some are not cut from that same cloth, but overall they really seem to love their jobs.

Entertainment and Socializing

The onboard experience encourages relaxation and connection. Many travelers find joy in simply gazing out the window, losing themselves in thought or diving into a good book. If you're feeling social, the lounge or observation cars provide opportunities to meet fellow adventurers. Shared experiences create bonds, and it's not uncommon to make lasting friendships over a game of cards and drinks in the lounge or a shared meal in the dining car. Also if you dont feel like socializing, then you dont have to! You are always welcome to eat by yourself in the lounge, back at your seat, or in your private room. Just remember that the diner car is communal if your group is smaller than 4 people, so you will likely be seated with others.

Unique Experience and Amenities

Certain Amtrak routes offer unique features that elevate the travel experience. On routes that operate with Superliners, observation cars with panoramic windows invite you to immerse yourself in the landscape. On some journeys, National Park Service guides join the ride to share insights and history about the parks and historic landmarks you pass. Themed excursions, such as wine-tasting trips or historic reenactments, add an extra layer of excitement, appealing to a wide array of interests.

The Amtrak onboard experience is a rich one, full of human connections, and unique opportunities to engage with the places you travel through. It's a world where the journey itself becomes the destination, where time slows down, and the beauty of life on the rails unfolds. Whether you're a solitary traveler seeking reflection or a social butterfly ready to mingle, Amtrak's trains offer something for everyone.

Step 7: Estimating and Managing Trip Costs

Understanding and managing trip costs is the cornerstone of a stress-free travel experience. Here's how you might approach this:

Fare Type: Choose from options like Saver, Value, or Flexible, depending on your travel needs and budget.

Accommodations: If you're planning a multi-day trip, consider the range of onboard accommodations, from seats to roomettes or bedrooms. There is a big difference in price between coach seats and private roomette or bedrooms.

Meals and Extras: Factor in dining and any special onboard purchases you might anticipate. Sleeper car fares include all Dining Car meals, while coach fares do not.

Additional Travel Costs: Include trip insurance, ground transportation, hotels, and attractions at your destination.

Money-Saving Tips

Amtrak offers various ways to save money, especially if you're flexible with your travel plans:

Book Early: It is almost always an advantage to book as early as possible. Sometimes you can find good roomette and bedroom deals at the last minute but this is risky, usually booking early is the way to go.

Off-Peak Travel: If your schedule allows, traveling during non-peak times can result in significant savings. This means avoiding holidays school breaks if at all possible. Travel during the week is also usually cheaper than weekends.

Amtrak Deals and Specials: Amtrak offers a surprising number of good deals and discounts throughout the year, keep up with their marketing email list to access these deals. If you are flexible you can get some incredible discounts.

Rail Passes: For extended travel, consider a rail pass that allows multiple segments over a set period.

Package Deals: Look into vacation packages that bundle train travel with hotels and attractions. AmtrakVacations.com are experts at putting together these travel packages, their fee is often worth the expertise and discounts they can provide.

Membership Discounts: Various memberships, such as the National Rail Passengers Association (NRPA) or student discounts, might apply to your fare. If you are planning a rather expensive trip, the NRPA membership will likely pay for itself right away.

Amtrak Credit Card: Amtrak and Mastercard offer an Amtrak Rewards credit card that comes with a serious sign up bonus that could help pay for your entire trip. If you use it regularly it can also help you pay for future trips

Budgeting for an Amtrak journey is about more than just dollars and cents; it's about aligning your financial planning with your travel dreams. From the initial estimation of costs to savvy use of discounts and awareness of potential extras, thoughtful budgeting empowers you to travel with peace of mind.

Navigating Challenges and Delays

While train travel with Amtrak is a delightful experience for many, it's certainly not immune to delays. Unfortunately Amtrak is at the whim of the freight railroads whos tracks it operates on, and this is the primary reason for delays. (DonDelays, cancellations, or mishaps can (and often will) happen, but with a prepared mindset and a little knowledge, these needn't spoil your adventure. Let's explore how to approach these challenges.

An unfortnate rule of thumb with Amtrak: ALWAYS EXPECT DELAYS . If you go in with this mindset you will have a much more enjoyable trip.

When faced with a delay or cancellation, a proactive approach can make a significant difference:

Stay Informed: Utilize Amtrak’s website, mobile app, or station information boards to keep up to date on your train's status.

Utilize Staff Support: Amtrak staff are usually well-informed and ready to assist. Don't hesitate to politely ask for guidance.

Pack Snacks and Entertainment: In case of long delays, having some snacks and entertainment can make the wait more comfortable.

Know Your Rights: Familiarize yourself with Amtrak's cancellation and delay policies so you can advocate for yourself if needed.

Should you need assistance, knowing where to turn is essential:

Amtrak Customer Service: Reachable at 1-800-USA-RAIL, this line can assist with various inquiries. They are especially good at dealing with ticketing issues, or changng travel plans. Compared to airlines Amtrak customer service is much more flexible to deal with.

Station Personnel: Don't overlook the station staff, who are typically well-equipped to provide local assistance and information. Many station staff members are volunteers who are there specifically to help you. Remember to always be polite and kind.

Amtrak's Website and App: Both of these digital platforms offer valuable resources, including real-time updates and support contacts.

While it might sound cliché, maintaining a positive attitude during travel disruptions can profoundly impact your experience. Delays are often beyond anyone's control, so embracing the unexpected as part of the adventure can turn potential frustration into an opportunity for relaxation or new acquaintances.

Traveling by Train

How to Travel by Train with an Oxygen Concentrator

There are many different ways to travel by train, whether using national or regional commuter trains as well as local rail lines. If you are wondering what to bring on a train when it comes to oxygen supplies, it is a good idea to check with each train company about traveling with oxygen tanks or lightweight portable oxygen. If you are traveling within the United States, it is likely you will be using Amtrak, in which case you should review the Amtrak train travel rules for traveling with oxygen . Rail carriers in countries outside the United States may have different requirements, as well as different standards for electrical outlets. Before you begin your trip, it is important to call the specific rail carrier to ensure that any specific guidelines are met.

Amtrak Restrictions on Oxygen Equipment [1]

Amtrak allows passengers who use oxygen equipment (e.g., bottled oxygen, oxygen concentrators) to bring the equipment onboard Amtrak trains with certain restrictions. Oxygen equipment transport is allowed on trains only for passengers with a disability. You may be required to provide a medical necessity to bring oxygen aboard the train.

Because it is not possible to make reservations that include oxygen equipment on Amtrak.com, you must call 1-800-USA-RAIL (1-800-872-7245) to let Amtrak know of your need to bring oxygen equipment and to make your reservations in advance. For TTY service, call 1-800-523-6590. Agents are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Portable oxygen equipment must meet the following specifications:

  • Power Source : Oxygen equipment, including oxygen concentrators, must be able to operate a minimum of four hours without available onboard electrical power (in the event of a power disruption onboard). Using the train’s power to charge your unit is acceptable.
  • UL or FM Listed : Oxygen equipment must be Underwriter’s Laboratory (UL) or Factory Mutual (FM) listed.
  • No more than 2 tanks, 50 lbs. (22.7 kg) each, or
  • No more than 6 tanks, 20 lbs. (9 kg) each

Tips for Bringing Lightweight Portable Oxygen on a Train

When you are taking stock of what to bring on a train, it is a good idea to carry proof of your medical need for supplemental oxygen, as well as bringing a copy of your oxygen prescription with you. In addition, consider the different needs of each oxygen delivery system. Traveling with a lightweight portable oxygen concentrator will require power and charged extra batteries, while traveling with oxygen tanks requires a safe storage space and extra tanks. Here are some additional tips for train travel with supplemental oxygen.

  • If you are using a travel oxygen machine, request a seat with a power port when making your train reservation. Confirm your seat has a power port upon boarding the train.
  • Carry the additional adapters that came with your travel oxygen machine in case there are different power port configurations.
  • Carry enough batteries for the duration of your trip in case your train does not have power ports available.
  • Check with the train company and make sure you are clear on any requirements or restrictions on traveling with oxygen equipment. The Amtrak train travel rules above are quite clear, but different companies may have different guidelines.

A Travel Oxygen Machine Makes Train Travel Simple

While you are welcome to travel with any oxygen delivery system that meets the Amtrak train travel rules, as long as you have a medical need, using a lightweight portable oxygen machine certainly makes it easier.

Lightweight portable oxygen concentrators , like those from Inogen, offer a compact solution for oxygen therapy. Easy to use both at home and on the go, any Inogen One model provides travel portability for a patient’s active lifestyle. First Zero-Emission Hydrogen Train Launching in the US Later This Year

This train can travel an astounding 46 hours before needing to charge.

Flirt H2 hydrogen train is shown in Berlin in 2022.

Hydrogen trains have come a long way.

As  zero-emission cars  gain in popularity, you can expect to hear more about sustainable trains. You can also expect to be able to board one soon if you live in the US, specifically on the West Coast. The first zero-emission, hydrogen-powered passenger train in the US, called the FLIRT H₂, will begin running routes starting in Southern California later this year.

The record-holding commuter train will operate on the Arrow line of the Metrolink train, the San Bernardino County Transportation Authority  announced  earlier this month. But don't expect to take it cross-country, or even from one end of the state to the other. The train will travel a 9.6-mile route between San Bernardino and Redlands, California.

Besides running on zero emissions, the FLIRT H₂ will also offer passengers a quieter experience on their rides than the county's current diesel-powered trains.

"When you're on the [FLIRT H₂] train, you can sit across from one another, either at a table or facing seats on the train and have a very quiet, pleasant, normal conversation uninterrupted by what typically we experience with train noise," Tim Watkins, San Bernardino County Transportation Authority's chief of Legislative and Public Affairs, told  LAist .

FLIRT H₂, manufactured by Swiss company Stadler Rail, has already set a world record even before welcoming riders onboard. In March, it set the record for the longest distance by a prototype hydrogen fuel cell electric multiple unit train without refueling, making it into the Guinness Book of World Records by traveling 1,742 miles straight on a test track in Colorado. It began running with full tanks on March 20, and stopped once the tanks were empty on March 22.

"Stadler is consistently focusing on the future of rail transportation with alternative drive systems by continuously developing innovative technologies," Stadler US CEO Martin Ritter said in an article posted on the company's website. "By using hydrogen as a clean energy source, we are actively contributing to environmental protection and shaping the sustainable and zero emission travel of tomorrow."

The train industry in the US is moving toward sustainability. In an  April release , Amtrak stated that the company is aiming to achieve Net Zero emissions by 2045. And in its statement, Stadler says it's the first train manufacturer in the world to produce narrow-gauge hydrogen trains, and that the company has been contracted to supply a total of 15 hydrogen-powered vehicles in Italy.

The ferry industry is on board with similar sustainability efforts as well. The  first hydrogen-powered ferry  is expected to debut in San Francisco this year.
