What will students see and do.
Looking for school trips to Europe and battlefield tours for schools? Anglia Tours offers high-quality educational trips across the continent that allow Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 students to visit important historic sites based in France, Germany, Belgium and beyond.
Students will have the opportunity to delve into the history of Europe, including the Western Front, with options to visit WW1 trenches and key sites including the Ypres and Somme battlefields. Many study experiences with Anglia Tours also cover the WW2 timeline, with educational visits to the site of the Dunkirk evacuation or school travel to visit Auschwitz in Poland.
History school teachers can also enrich students’ understanding of the French Revolution by taking classes to visit the Palace of Versailles, the site of the Bastille and the Conciergerie, where Marie Antoinette spent her final days. Students will also have the option to explore the culture and history of Paris by visiting the Louvre and taking a trip on the Seine.
Teachers who choose to stay local to the UK still have plenty of school trip ideas to consider, including London walking tours. Guided walks can help students better understand life on the Home Front while British troops, then known as the British Expeditionary Force (BEF), were fighting abroad in the Second World War. This history trip could cover stops at the Imperial War Museum and the Cabinet War Rooms. Other popular tours in London involve crime and punishment in Whitechapel, with a must-see Jack the Ripper tour.
How does the trip link to the curriculum?
Anglia Tours offers bespoke history school trips that are tailored to your class’s needs. Travelling across the English Channel opens the door to engaging and thought-provoking opportunities for learning outside the classroom. School trips abroad will enrich the knowledge students have built through their studies with impactful in-person experiences at places of interest, like WW1 battlefields and key World War II sites.
European battlefield tours offer a number of opportunities for further learning, from trench warfare and WW1 weapons, such as machine guns, to life in Nazi Germany and the beginnings of the Cold War. Students can also learn more about the Holocaust with a history tour beginning in Berlin, where Adolf Hitler planned the Final Solution, and culminating with gas chambers and crematoria at an Auschwitz tour.

Anglia tours.
An Anglia tour is an outstanding educational experience. At Anglia we care about our customers, our staff, the places we visit, the stories we tell and the organisations we work with. These key principles define who we are and what we do. We believe they are also the reason why Anglia is the market leader in fully-guided history tours for UK schools. We work with you to design a bespoke tour which meets the specific needs of your school and which supports what you are teaching in class. We start by asking what you want your students to see and what you want them to experience, then build the tour around these requirements. To further support your learning, Anglia also offers a choice of itineraries in Berlin, London and Ypres & the Somme designed endorsed by Edexcel to specifically support thematic studies. An assured member of the School Travel Forum(STF) and holder of the prestigious Learning Outside the Classroom Quality Badge, Anglia has also been recognised by the Western Front Association as a key provider for UK schools’ WW1 battlefields and is a member of the Guild of Battlefield Guides. We select carefully the sites we visit, mindful of their relevance to the tour and the environmental impact which groups repeatedly visiting the same places can have. Booking a tour with Anglia also provides you with financial security. We are a member of ABTA and the flights and flight-inclusive packages we offer are financially protected by the ATOL scheme. We also include as standard, travel insurance specifically tailored to the needs of educational groups. As you will have an experienced guide with you throughout your tour, someone who is able to deal with any issues which may arise, we can also offer you far greater peace of mind wherever you are travelling to. It is all part of the Anglia Standard. Anglia are part of the Next Generation Travel Group, which is the only educational tour operator with a government standard Customer Service Excellence accreditation.

WW1 Battlefield Tour Companies and Guides: Starting from the UK
An increasing number of guides and tour companies offer tours to the First World War battlefields: these tours can include one day visits or all-inclusive tours over several days, walking tours, themed tours, cycling tours, self-drive and personalized tours for individuals or groups. Tours will usually range in size from coach tours, to minibus tours, to tours by private vehicle.
Most tours will provide the opportunity for the first-time visitor to see the main sites of interest in a battlefield sector. An increasing number of tour companies are also able to offer, separately or within a standard tour itinerary, an extra special personalized service, whereby travellers wanting to follow in the footsteps of an ancestor who served on the battlefields can be taken to specific places of action and commemoration. Do be aware that your guide will more than likely need sufficient notice if you have a particular request to visit a place of special interest, so ask well in advance of the tour if you have any special requests.
Travellers should expect a high level of experience and expertise in the subject from a guide to the WW1 battlefields. It goes without saying that you should also expect a high standard of service for all the travel and accommodation requirements of a given tour. You are advised to look at testimonials from previous travellers and ask for the tour guide's credentials before booking a tour. Guides and companies requesting to be listed on this website are taken on trust where they are not already known to greatwar.co.uk.
List of Tour Companies and Guides Starting from the United Kingdom
The following list is an overview of organizations or individual guides offering tours to the First World War battlefields where the tour starts from designated pick-up points in the United Kingdom.
This list is offered to assist travellers in finding a tour company to suit your specific requirements. You are advised to contact the tour guide or company directly with any enquiry about the tours they offer. You must be satisfied that they comply with travel, package holidays and package tours regulations. Greatwar.co.uk cannot be held responsible for a guide or tour company failing to comply with package holiday travel regulations and public liability cover.

Anglia Tours aims to bring history closer to home with new packages
2020-10-16T15:20:00+01:00
Anglia Tours is offering a range of options to help support classroom-based teaching, taking pupils to range of historically significant places across the UK.
Schools can book their spots on a range of history day trips with Anglia Tours.
The team has said that now is still a good time to boost students’ knowledge and passion with the help of its guided history tours throughout the UK.
Whether it be trips to historically significant places, walking tours or living history workshops within schools, every session is designed to enhance subject learning and boost pupils’ confidence.
UK day trips
Anglia Tours’ UK day trips, which can be tailored for different ages, have been designed with the aim of enabling students to develop a deeper understanding of the events, experience and legacy of World War One:
- The Christmas Truce: through unique re-enactments, pupils will meet with a Recruiting Sergeant to be put through their paces with a Drill Sergeant and learn about how wounds and injuries were treated from a Medical Officer.
- World War One day tour to the Midlands: the tour begins at the Great War Hut, Cannock Chase to learn about recruitment and training of the British Army, before moving on for a guided tour of the nearby Commonwealth and German Military cemeteries. Then it is on the to the Staffordshire Regiment Museum, where pupils can see a large, reconstructed trench system, period equipment and weaponry close up and experience a World War One training camp. The tour will end with a visit to the National Memorial Arboretum.
- World War One day tour to East Anglia: delivered in conjunction with Khaki Devil and the Great War Huts, students will: visit restored, original World War One buildings; see a large reconstructed trench system; and take part in a fully-guided tour of a local cemetery which contains a number of Commonwealth War Graves Commission burials.
London-based walking tours
Led by an Anglia guide, each London walking tour visits a range of carefully selected sites throughout the city. By making use of different historical sources such as official documents, drawings, and photographs, the tours aim to help students visualise the environment in a way which a text book cannot:
- Whitechapel: Crime, Policing & The Inner City: focussing on the case study of Jack the Ripper, this fully-guided walking tour will cover key themes such as housing, unemployment, poverty, immigration and crime. There is also a detailed examination of investigative policing in Whitechapel at the turn of the 20th century.
- London & The Second World War: with visits to locations such as St Paul’s Cathedral, Smithfield Market and the ruins of St Dunstan’s in the east, and covering themes including the Blitz, weapons and London’s response to the war, this tour will look at how the city and its people dealt with an unprecedented threat.
If schools are unable to get outside of the school grounds at this time, Anglia Tours can also bring history to you, through a series of presentations, each delivered in character by historical interpreters. These days can be tailored to meet specific requirements.

MoneySavingExpert's Martin Lewis appeals for help to find missing Norwich teacher Anthony Hill
- Martin Lewis
- Tuesday 18 June 2024 at 1:31pm
Home finance guru Martin Lewis has appealed for help to find a former colleague who has been reported missing, echoing calls from the man's family to find him.
Anthony Hill, 37, from Thorpe St Andrew near Norwich, had worked on Mr Lewis's MoneySavingExpert website before retraining to become a primary school teacher.
He was last seen leaving his home on Plumstead Road East at 7.45am, but his school St William's Primary said later that day that he had been reported missing, and police have appealed to the public.
Mr Lewis, posting on X, described the news as "devastating", and urged his followers to share the appeal.
"Anthony is a lovely man who used to work on the MoneySavingExpert deals team before leaving to pursue his valiant passion to get into teaching.
"I hope and pray he's OK. Please please spread word."
Mr Hill's wife appealed on Facebook for people to review any doorbell camera or dashcam footage from the area.
Police described Mr Hill as white, 5ft 7 inches tall, of a slim build and with short brown hair.
He was last seen wearing brown chino trousers, a black checked shirt, a green coat and a yellow rucksack.
Police said they were concerned for Mr Hill's welfare and would like to hear from anyone who has seen him or knows where he is.
Anyone with any information should contact police on 101, quoting incident number NC-17062024-507.
