When we claimed our luggage we didn't see any damage on the outside of the luggage, but when we go home and unpacked, the plastic edge around the fabric that holds the fabric around the zipper up is crushed to pieces. We didn't pay a whole lot for the pieces, but we were expecting to use the pieces for more than 2 cruises. Watching how they load the luggage into these carts one can understand how things can get crushed. I guess we must of been at the bottom of the crate with all that weight on ours.

Anyone had any luck collecting from Carnival after the fact for damaged luggage?

My only suggestion is to use it for your next cruise and when you get your luggage...take it to the Purser's Desk. They can help you from there. You must show them the luggage in person while you are on the cruise.

At least it is a good excuse to take another cruise!! Good Luck!!

Couple of things..

The stevedores (luggage handlers) on the pier are employed by the port, not Carnival, so it would be difficult to establish liability on Carnival's part for this scenario. Did you have insurance? If so, check your policy, you may be able to claim something here.

Did you fly to your port of embarkation, and could the airline baggage handlers be the guilty ones?

We had a similar problem on our Freedom Med cruise this summer. Unfortunately this happened when we first got on the ship. The zipper was broken and we couldn't get the suitcase open. Carnival sent up a maintenance person and he worked on it for a while but couldn't get it open. He finally used his screwdriver and got the zipper open - but broken. We still had two weeks in Europe after the cruise and needed a suitcase. Carnival knew of the situation and asked if we bought the insurance and we had since this was a bigger trip. We could have bought another suitcase but my husband worked on it for a long time until he got it to be usable. when we packed to leave the ship we put clothes that we knew we wouldn't be using the rest of the trip so we wouldn't have to open the case again. We threw it away when we got home.

The insurance was really good and we got a refund quickly after we sent in the forms. I don't know if Carnival would have done anything if we didn't have the insurance but it certainly wouldn't hurt to ask. We never take the insurance for the little cruises from the States so it would be good to know how Carnival will handle this for you.

We currently have a claim with Carnival concerning our luggage. Our luggage was totally distroyed by baggage handlers either on board the ship or at the pier. When they delivered our luggage to our cabin the leg was torn off and it was also crushed and is no longer usable, this happened to two pieces of our luggage. We contacted the Purser's Desk and they filed a report and gave me instructions on what to do. I had to take our luggage to a repair shop and they had to write a letter stating that this luggage was unrepairable and the cost to replace this luggage. I have as of yet to hear from Carnival concerning this. This happened at Fort Lauderdale. We did not fly in so we know the airline did not do this. Since the workers at the pier are loading luggage for Carnival, Carnival should make sure that our luggage is handled carefully.

You might want to contact the Customer Relations Department and file a claim concerning your luggage.

Yes we did have trip insurance. I hadn't checked the policy to see if they covered damaged luggage. I just had the mind set that it was for sickness and cancelaton etc.....

Thanks for the advice.

Good reason to buy cheap luggage. Between the baggage handlers at the airport and those at the port there is a good chance something will happen. We came home will red and blue paint from Carnival all over the bags. We weren't able to recover any costs from that.

Marie51

I have twice had damaged luggage after a cruise. Travel insurance quickly reimbursed me for the cost of the luggage. Just another reason to buy insurance, and yes, it covers more than just sickness or cancellation. Call the company that you bought the insurance from and ask them about it.

I believe you should not have to purchase travel insurance to cover your luggage from being damaged by employees of either the pier or the cruiseline. My luggage has been damaged twice by the workers in Ft. Lauderdale.

Nobody HAS to buy trip insurance, and most that do, buy it for other than damaged/lost luggage reasons. Just so happens that many of the policies do cover this, and the OP may be able to take advantage of this, that's all..

VentureMan_2000

If you use soft sided zippered luggage... you really have to expect it to get crushed, bent, broken, etc. It's just a cheap metal frame and rigid plastic wrapped in a zippered nylon material.

Crimany... there is nothing to these types of bags. And they don't cost anything to begin with. I purchase mine at Mervyn's... they have great luggage sales a couple times a year. I purchased a 5-piece set for $60, that normally sells for $175.

The purchase of hard rigid luggage is your best bet if you do not want any damage.

But for the price difference, it is much less expensive to just plan on purchasing a 5-piece set every few years... after your current lugge no longer holds up to the rigors of travel.

Believe it or not, I got 4 cruises and numerous flights out of my set of JC Penney luggage. On our last cruise the zipper busted on one piece and luckily, for first time, I'd brought duct tape. Didn't look pretty, but it got all our stuff home in one piece.

1,000+ Club

Check your insurance. I bet that will take care of your problem.

It could have been worse, though. At least no one dropped your luggage into the water. We are still dealing with reimbursement issues from that adventure.

Its interesting that many folks feel its ok for the port workers or the Cruise handlers to mishandle and damage luggage and just pass it off to insurers. Do most of you in your line of work do things that cause damage to your customers and think nothing of it. I'm bonded in the work I do but I certainly don't do my job and think nothing of abusing my customers. And I certainly don't expect my insurer to cover me if I did. I said in an above post buy cheap luggage.........but even that shouldn't be necessary. If this were a thread on tipping the port workers most people would be adamant you can stiff them. Well who is it that causes the damage? And when it happens should it just be the problem of the insurance company.

250+ Club

My suitcase was damaged on my last cruise, but most luggage is cheaply made and I chalked it up to cheap luggage. Isn't that what the duct tape is for?:D

my3kids

We also had luggage damaged by 'someone' - luggage was fine when we handed it to the porters before we boarded - and 2 pieces of the 5 were trashed when they made it to our cabin. The garment bag was ripped and had tar and black top on it when we got it, and our other piece of luggage was ripped and appeared that it had also been drug down the road:mad: Looks to us like that is what happened - the 2 pieces must have somehow gotten run over or literally drug down the road.

So - we spent alot of time with the pursers desk trying to get this resolved. The last nite they finally agreed to give us $50 onboard credit for both pieces. They did attempt to clean them - which it is virtually impossible to remove tar from cloth luggage.

The beginning of the ordeal with the pursers desk was not real pleasant, but in the end - I was ok with their decision.

VolzCruiser

I totally disagree with this. I had cheap luggage and was able to use it for only 2 cruises before is was destroyed. I upgraded to higher grade suitcase and have been using the same luggage since. What you want to look for is a High Ballistic Nylon and a High D count. I purchase 4 bags for about $200 1900d ballistic nylon and it was worth every penny.

FrannyK

Almost every single cruise has damaged our luggage. It's usually a broken leg, sometimes a severely bent frame, broken zipper--we've never left a ship with our luggage intact. I don't know why I never went to the purser, and it never even occured to me to use insurance. If it's just a leg I have the shoemaker repair/replace it for $10, otherwise, I've replaced damaged luggage w/cheap luggage. I know it won't last long anyway :)

I think on my next cruise I will carry on all of my luggage. It is a shame that the workers do not take more pride in what they do. I saw them unload luggage on our last cruise and could not believe how the Carnival employees handled the luggage. All of the luggage we purchased will go through the xray machine. Personally, I think no matter how cheap or how expensive your luggage is they should take better care of it than they do.

beccadoby

Almost every single cruise has damaged our luggage.

I guess we have all been through this.

No the handlers do not "handle with care". Thats for sure!

Our cruise last year (disney magic) get got one luggage that was ripped and one that had wheels crushed~ thats not fun at all to deal with when ITS HUGE and HEAVEY!

How exactly did wheels get crushed? Humm...I am just glad that my case of bottled water was not in that one:D

mjbearit

I've never cruised (won't be able to say that for very long! :D ) before, but the airlines are terrible about killing luggage. I have been through several sets because of those apes they hire, or maybe it all the mechanized stuff, I don't know, but all I know is my luggage was in such poor condition when we took it out to look at it for this trip, I made the decision, yet again, to get new luggage. This time I decided to get hard sided luggage. I found the luggage I wanted and kept searching for a price that wasn't terrible. I finally found this luggage on overstock dot com and it was the best price by quite a bit and the shipping was a flat $2.50 or something equally low! This luggage is not light and every place else was charging a fortune to ship it. Unfortunately I found no place except on-line to get this luggage, so shipping was inevitable! They didn't even charge me a fuel surcharge! :p It arrived maybe a month ago and it is everything I had hoped it would be! Now time will tell if hard-sided is the way to go! I figure if it makes it through the cruise then through the airlines when we go visit the grandkids in the fall, it was money well spent! I'm just tired of spending money for the airlines to kill my luggage every couple of years. And of course no-one will take responsibility for it either. The airlines blame the airport, the airport blames the airlines and once in a while they will blame the consumer just to round things up nicely! But anyway it was a 3 piece hard sided for around $139.00! It is very sturdy and I have high hopes! :D

How to Handle Common Cruise Fiascoes: Lost Luggage, Missed Flights & More

By Frommer's Staff

Chris Around the World

Would-be cruisers often worry about the worst-case scenarios . But what about the lesser annoyances and difficult situations that are more likely to happen?

Consumers are becoming more educated about the types of problems that can happen when you take a cruise, says Dwain Wall, senior vice president and manager at CruiseOne ( www.cruiseone.com ), a company that specializes in cruise bookings.

About 60% of the people who book through the company's affiliated travel agents buy travel insurance when they purchase the cruise, up from 40% two years ago. "As people understand the risks of traveling, then they are much more willing to get it," Wall says.

Here are some common scenarios that can crop up during a cruise -- and what you can do to prevent them.

Cruise Fiasco #1: Your luggage goes missing during a transfer. First Response: Carnival Cruise Lines passengers should complete a lost luggage tracking form from the airline to begin the process of locating the missing item, says spokesman Vance Gulliksen. "Carnival then contacts the airlines and travel insurance carrier (if the guests purchased insurance) rather than have the guests call directly, which can be costly when traveling," Gulliksen says. Guests whose luggage did not arrive at the ship are provided with an amenity kit and a T-shirt, and can buy or rent clothing in the shipboard gift shop, he added.

Next Time: Buy travel insurance that contains baggage protection as part of its coverage, Gulliksen advises. Carnival also advises guests to retain their receipts for any purchases/expenses incurred onboard or ashore to present to the airline when they return, he says.

Cruise Fiasco #2: Your laptop is stolen out of your cabin. First Response: Contact the shipboard staff right away so an onboard investigation can get started, says Gulliksen of Carnival. The line will ask the passenger to complete a formal report, and -- with the guests' permission -- search the stateroom and examine lock link readings, which track every time a cabin is entered and what key card was used to access it, he says.

Next Time: Depending on your policy, travel insurance can cover theft of objects. But before you bring a laptop on any vacation, do a thorough backup on an external hard drive before you leave so all of your documents, photo, and data are in safe place.

If you need to access a document or your system on the road, you can save it in a cloud-based system such as Google Documents, or Windows Live, or purchase membership in a storage service such as Carbonite ( www.carbonite.com ), which costs about $55 annually.

Cruise Fiasco #3: Flight delays mean you miss the boat, or the ship returns late and you miss your flight home.

First Response: If you've booked through the cruise line or a travel agent and have what's known as a "Cruise Fare," the airline is required to get you to the next port of call, Wall says. Some travel insurance policies will also cover this; before you buy, check to make sure that it covers weather-related issues (many don't). Otherwise, you should call the airline to get yourself rebooked as soon as you suspect there might be a problem. Depending on what kind of ticket you purchased, you might have to pay a change fee.

Next Time: If you don't want to book through a travel agent or purchase a travel insurance policy, make sure you give yourself plenty of time before and after the cruise to accommodate flight problems. Many cruisers choose to fly in a day before the cruise departs and fly out the day after the ship docks. The extra time can reduce your stress level.

Cruise Fiasco #4: You get back to port, and the ship has left early. First Response: About 450 cruise passengers were stranded in San Juan last year, when port authorities in San Juan ordered Royal Caribbean and Carnival ships to leave the docks early in preparation of Hurricane Irene. The lines handled the situation in different ways: While Carnival paid for passengers to meet the ship at its next stop, regardless of what kind of airfare they bought, Royal Caribbean only provided airfare for those who had booked through them -- forcing the other stranded passengers to pay to get to the next stop (a move that received widespread criticism on the Internet). Luckily, this type of situation rarely happens, Wall says. "It's another reason to buy travel insurance," he says.

Next Time: Cruising the Caribbean during hurricane season , particularly August and September, comes with inherent risks. Even if you don't usually buy travel insurance , this is the one time that you should look into it. And if tropical storms loom on the horizon, it's probably not the right time to take an excursion to the opposite end of the island.

Cruise Fiasco #5: You're injured onboard. First Response: "We have a full medical facility on board every ship in the case of an emergency," says Amanda Graham, spokeswoman for Norwegian Cruise Line. Most of the major cruise lines have similar medical services on board, which Wall discovered when errant fireworks smashed into his traveling companion's eye.

"I was amazed by the quality of the hospital services," Wall says. "Some of the larger ships even have the ability to do minor surgery on board." But if your injury is a life-threatening event, the cruise ship will arrange for a helicopter to get you to the nearest hospital (at your expense).

Next Time: Travel insurance that covers medical evacuation is perhaps the most important protection you can buy, particularly if you're traveling overseas or to remote areas. If you're a frequent traveler, look for a policy that has an annual fee.

Cruise Fiasco #6: Your ship drastically changes its itinerary. First Response: Of all the above scenarios, this is perhaps the most likely to occur, Wall says. "There are a lot of reasons why cruise lines make decisions," he says, including geopolitical and economic uncertainty. "It typically doesn't happen on short notice."

If a cruise line does change its itinerary, passengers are almost always given the option to either stay on the cruise or receive a credit for a future cruise, Wall says. And if they have certain travel insurance policies, they can cancel outright if the change isn't weather-related, he said.

Next Time: Keep up with current events, and you'll realize that some countries, such as Egypt or Tunisia in the Middle East or Mexico's Pacific Coast, have ongoing political or crime issues that have caused the cruise lines to make last-minute changes to planned itineraries. If your heart is set on visiting these places, you might want to consider a land-based vacation instead of a cruise.

Carnival Cruise Line pushes back on powerful controversy

A s recently as a few years ago, a combination of not everyone having a smartphone and lousy internet at sea made keeping your devices charged on a cruise a minor problem. Cruise ships often offered a single American and a single European outlet at the desk area.

This was sufficient to use a hair dryer or keep whatever limited devices passengers had charged. Cruise ships were not designed, at least until recently, for every person in the family to have a phone as well as perhaps a tablet, a Kindle, and maybe a laptop.

Related: Carnival Cruise Line fixing a key passenger pain point

A family of four on a cruise ship usually has more than four devices and keeping them charged is essential. That's because many cruise lines now use QR codes for menus and put their daily schedules on their apps.

Both Carnival Cruise Line  ( CCL )  and Royal Caribbean  ( RCL )  also have messaging services that allow families to keep in touch while at sea. Keeping devices charged can be a challenge on older ships that have limited outlets and USB ports.

Most people make up for the by bringing multi-plug devices with added USB and USB-C ports. That solves the problem, but Royal Caribbean recently shockingly banned any device that turns an outlet into multiple outlets. It also banned adapters that turn the European outlet into an American one.

You could never use power strips with surge protectors on cruise ships — those are a fire hazard due to how cruise ship electrical systems work — but regular multi-plug devices used to be allowed.

Now, Royal Caribbean only allows devices that give you extra USB and/or USB-C ports off a single outlet.

Carnival has some angry passengers

Carnival Brand Ambassador John Heald takes a lot of abuse from angry passengers. He's often held accountable for decisions that he has no control over and sometimes, problems that are not real.

He recently shared one angry passenger's letter and his response on his Facebook page.

"Very infrequently do I get as angry as I am today Heald. Carnival Cruise Line have banned us from bringing on power strips and chargers. There has been no warning. I would not have known this if I had not been a member of the Carnival VIP Facebook group. Carnival has given us no advance warning. I am driving tomorrow to New Orleans to get on the Liberty. I am Platinum and am angry enough to cancel this cruise and take the hit," they wrote.

More Carnival:

  • Carnival Cruise Line takes on main dining room controversy
  • Carnival Cruise Line adds a new homeport, shares new itineraries
  • Carnival Cruise Line shares a passport rule for most ports
  • Carnival Cruise Line defends its beloved towel animals

Canceling seems extreme for a passenger driving to their cruise, given that any gas station would sell outlets that meet the Royal Caribbean standard for not adding plugs. The passenger also had a suggestion for how Carnival should fix this perceived problem.

"Why doesn’t Carnival do like ---- are doing and provide a standardized power strip in each stateroom that is acceptable to the cruise line with 4 charge units and USB outlets? My wife and son and me have 4 devices that need charging each night. This is insane," the passenger added.

Carnival sets the record straight

"Thank you and once again this infamous Facebook page has provided you with the wrong information, no shock there. Anyway, you can bring a power strip. We have not changed our rules and, providing it does not have a surge protector and is in excellent working condition, then poop it into your carry on, mate, and bring it on board. I am sharing this with everyone in case anyone is misled by reading what is posted on that Facebook page," Heald wrote.

Related: Macy's is selling a $440 hardside luggage set for just $98, and shoppers say it's 'sturdy but also lightweight'

The Brand Ambassador also poked a little fun at the passenger's extreme stance and threat to cancel.

"And to cancel a cruise because you are angry, well that is a very high level of anger. I guess I don’t understand that at all. If I have an argument with my wife Heidi the worst thing I do is open a bottle of some condiment or sauce or packet of biscuits when there’s already one open," he added.

Many of Heald's followers jumped to Carnival's defense.

"If people would only not jump to conclusions and instead ask questions. It was RC that banned the power strip. The article went on to explain the reason and offered an alternative. It even said Carnival was NOT going to follow RC but was still ALLOWING the strip," shared Missi Brown.

Over 1,000 people commented on the post and many worried about the mental health of the poster.

"LMAO 'I'm going to cancel my cruise because of power strips' is WILD. I guarantee this person gets road rage at least 15 times a week," added Michele Briggs Allen.

Disembarked this morning from the Magic at Port Canaveral and are missing a bag. Completely apathetic staff to our plight. Anyone have experience with this and have tips on how to navigate the process? The one t shirt we purchased for our son is gone from the most perfect day in St Maarten on a catamaran. Carnival is losing 3 cruisers today. The lack of care or effort illustrates why we won't be on their ships any longer.

The happened to 2 people on my last cruise from Galveston. Not a Carnival cruise. The 2 parties were not together and the port staff  (who work for the port and not the cruise lines) were VERY unhelpful and rude. One of the people finally had the employees contact port security even though they didn’t want to. One of the bags had an Air Tag in it and they could see it moving. They security was able to see where the bag ended up (locally) and matched it with unclaimed luggage in the terminal. An elderly couple picked up the wrong luggage and didn’t verify the tags. Ended up bringing the bags back to the port.

Hopefully it is something equally innocent with your bag and when the person realizes they will contact the port. There should be a lost and found I would think. I would also contact Carnival do they will know about the port employees lack of help even if they don’t work for them.

Once my SIL left a cruise dock in NYC, and completely forgot she had brought a certain bag, and left it sitting on the dock and drove home.  Luckily her identification was on the bag, and a few days later the cruise line (NCL)/port shipped it to her.

I have also heard stories of bags accidentally being placed in different sections in the port during disembarkation, so it always helps to do a walk-through before departing.  Honestly, the responsibility belongs to the port staff, NOT the cruise line.

Hope your bag turns up soon!

This happened to us a number of years ago out of Long Beach.

Another passenger accidentally took our bag instead of his.  Thankfully he lived in the area abs when he opened the bag and saw our tag he called our cell.

There really wasn’t anything the staff could do.  It took a few hours of stress but we got it back.

hope it works out for you.

This is why I don't mind the restricted wardrobe that comes with using a carry on suitcase.  You always have it with you, so it doesn't get lost.  The main reason is having to fly to port - I'd rather not pay for a checked bag if I can help it.

Once the bags leave the ship it (supposedly) is not Carnival's problem anymore - it becomes the dockside workers, who are not through Carnival, from what I understand.   I do agree CCL could be more sympathetic to your plight.  Keep calling the port to see if it turned up- another passenger may have picked it up by mistake.  Hopefully your luggage was labelled and someone can contact you.  We have also learned to put anything we don't want possibly lost upon embark or debarkation in our backpacks, which never leave our hands.   We recently purchased AirTags for our luggage.  Too late for you to do that now, but maybe in the future....

The employees in the baggage area are wearing Carnival uniforms so they are representatives of Carnival. I had the plan for AirTags before the cruise but somehow life got in the way. Bag was labeled so fingers crossed. Ugh

kelkel2

Absolutely hindsight. But I wouldn’t travel without an AirTag anymore. I’m so sorry this happened to you, it’s one of my biggest fears with cruising.

Is there anything you can do? Honestly, aside from contacting the carnival lost and found department I don’t know? Hopefully it’s a situation of someone grabbed the wrong suitcase. But if not, it has to be there somewhere, right? Maybe it will turn up.

Pyrate13

Wearing uniforms, or not, they still do not work for Carnival, they work for the port. Those same folks will wear different uniforms for the next cruise line when a different ship is at the pier. They answer to different bosses.

This does not mean I don't care about your loss, just that you're blaming the wrong entity.

Aren't Air Tags only good up to 100 feet or something like that?  How were they able to see where the bag ended up?  Just trying to see if I should get Air Tags, but if they are only good up to a certain distance, not sure I would benefit with them

Yes but as other people with iPhones pass in and out of range of AirTags, their position is updated.

So if my luggage is 10 miles away, and anyone with an Iphone passes it, the position is updated and I can see the new position on my Iphone at that time?  Did not know that., maybe it is worth getting.  Thanks for the info

That is correct.

"Live from...."

Did you file a report before you left the port?

Most likely someone accidentally walked off with it and hopefully will realize their error and contact the cruise line (my family did this once when traveling with my parents, 4 adults, 5 children, a little chaotic). I don’t know what the port staff can do if this is the case.

jsglow

99% of the time this occurs because some other cruiser has accidentally taken your bag and although infrequent, it does occasionally occur. Given the volume, there is no chance any cruiseline will ever require a 'secure' process where folks will be required to barcode and have their bag scanned upon retrieval.  The cruiseline didn't 'lose' it. A fellow passenger 'took' it.  Even though the risk is extremely low, we never put our bags out for the crew to put them ashore and always carry our own off. I know that's not helpful to the OP and I'm sorry for your loss. I hope your honest fellow passenger calls when they discover the mistake.

Is the lost luggage covered by travel insurance?  maybe through your credit card?

Luggage gets lost/stolen in lots of ways.  Usually it gets found because it does not have much value to anyone but the owner.  I don't think Carnival wants anyone's luggage.  If it turns up, the line will go to some expense to get it to you.

Good luck with the bags turning up.

Hi @love4monsters 🙂

Thank goodness your bag was labeled.

Was this documented & reported at the terminal??

For decades, we always attach seperate, extremely secure luggage tags, other than air line or cruise line luggage tags, that contain only our (Name, Address & Cell Phone) contact information.

And (inside) each suitcase, we also always place a piece of paper on top of our clothing, containing the same information.

Please come back to your post here with updates, when possible.

Good luck & my fingers are crossed for you as well!

Curious if anyone did any paperwork to document your lost luggage?

A few cruises back at Miami my bag did not show up in the claims area. Everyone looked for it from one end of the area to the other no success. Went home hoping for a phone call saying it was found. Well it was found. What happened, was the bag fell off the cart with nobody picking it up. Possibly this same thing happened to you.

You do realize that the people who handle the luggage aren't Carnival employees, right?

Quick update - bag was located but Carnival emailed to tell us they will let us know the cost of shipping the bag. Are they actually serious???????

I was already on board looking at MSC cruises while on the Magic. Time to try a new line. Our son is older and ready to branch out too!

Glad they found it!  Yeah, that's pretty bad if they're actually going to expect you to pay for return shipping cost. 🤨  Even if the baggage loss wasn't their fault, goodwill towards the customer says they should eat the cost for shipping.

Yes, enjoy the other lines - we certainly do!   But we still enjoy the Carnival product too.

Happened to my mom a few years ago. It cost her $125 to get her missing bag from Seattle back to NJ.  It was clearly the cruise lines fault since the bag was never taken off the ship.

This was on CELEBRITY, her favorite cruise line!

Mother should have listened to daughter for once.  I told her, CARRY ON, CARRY OFF (LOL).

Happy they located your bag.  This can happen on any line.

I’m glad you found your bag!  On our last cruise (Royal) our bags were very late in coming to us - way after the other bags had been delivered and pulled into rooms. We do pack extra underwear in our carry on, but we’ve decided from then on, we’ll only pack a 22” carry on and our backpacks. We don’t mind repeating clothes and we don’t do formal nights (although my daughter had a very nice formal dress that could be rolled into a little ball and pop out ready to wear!) so we’ll be easy carry on/carry off!

I recently traveled on Carnival Inspiration for a 4 night cruise out of Long Beach.
