While sitting at gate K16, between flights at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport, I overheard an older couple grumbling about the 5-hour layover until their Zurich flight departed. What would they do?

I didn’t mean to eavesdrop but lightbulbs were going off in my mind! I contemplated, “Am I going to be that person who speaks up and starts a conversation, or should I mind my own business?” Well, anyone who knows me would say that I’m quite chatty. I turned and leaned toward them and said, “I happened to overhear your pickle and I have a few ideas that might make your stay here in the airport better!”

Hustle and Bustle inside of O'Hare Airport

My 10 Favorite Ways To Spend A Long Layover At Chicago O’Hare Airport

You can quickly learn about our 10 favorite ways in the story below or can learn about them in more detail by continuing to read:

1. Get Away From The Hustle And Bustle

Located on the Mezzanine floor, in the rotunda of Terminals 2 and 3, above one of the busiest airports in the country, is a quiet sanctuary that used to house a first-of-its-kind Aeroponic Garden. Sadly, the garden has been removed, but it is still a quiet place to get away from all the hustle and bustle of the gates below.

The entire upper floor is a quiet place with many contemporary, movable chairs to rest, make calls, and check emails while utilizing the free WiFi provided by the airport. Large floor-to-ceiling windows allow natural light to flood the area. Military families can seek a bit of respite at the USO area on the same floor, which serves free refreshments in a quiet lounge.

Pro Tip

Stop and grab a bag of Chicago ’s best-kept secret, Garrett’s Popcorn, en route to the sanctuary. Located between Terminals 2 and 3 next to security. Made nationally famous overnight by Oprah and her “Favorite Things,” this popcorn is truly amazing.

The locals call it “the Chicago Mix,” a blend of caramel and cheese popcorn mixed in a bag. If you are a popcorn aficionado, these are heavenly kernels. Garrett lovers will know you have indulged by the orange halo on your mouth. They do offer wipes “to-go” and free samples. Don’t miss it!

Yoga Room at O'Hare Airport.

2. Downward Dog And Coach Seats

Chicago O’Hare Airport is said to be one of the best layover airports in the U.S. because it has a lot to offer. Between flights, relax, recharge, and reflect in a tranquil yoga room available for passengers, gratis. Located next to the quiet area, in the rotunda of Terminal 3, across from the USO, a yoga room with sustainable bamboo-lined floors, wall-to-ceiling mirrors, yoga mats, and an instructional TV with yoga classes allows you to recharge.

There is a designated area to place your luggage and belongings. A perfect place to rest your mind and body, especially if you have a 10-hour flight in coach! A frosted-glass wall allows privacy while letting natural light fill the room. Plants line the exterior windows, while the calm earth tones enhance your being in a relaxed state. Meditate in a quiet environment or listen to calming sounds.

Public restrooms nearby make it easy to change clothes and wash your face. The yoga room is open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Neon Underground tunnel.

3. Art And Airplanes

Look no further if you want to stretch your legs and see a bit of history, all the while looking at the many art installations within the Chicago O’hare Airport. Starting in American Airlines’ iconic Terminal 3 , see the world flags hang, representing every country American services from Chicago. Head over to Terminal 1 and see the four-story-high brachiosaurus and visit the field museum.

Visit the “Sky’s the Limit” a 744-foot-long kinetic neon sculpture of light and sound. See the $1.2 million installation, an underground tunnel, connecting Terminals 1 and 2 with access to United Airlines. It’s a great backdrop for fun and features very interesting pictures. Over at Terminal 2, you can read and see WWII war hero Butch O’Hare’s story and see the F4F-3 fighter airplane. Coming soon, to Terminal 5, will be an art investment, with a hefty budget of $3.5 million.

Take a great Instagram shot at Terminal 3 in American Airlines’ concourse. Grab your cheeks and duplicate the famous image of Home Alone , or when the family ran through the airport to catch their flight to Paris.

4. Spa La-La

Who doesn’t like to sing “spa-la-la” when entering the magical doors of a spa? There is such a place located within the airport that offers all kinds of pampering. Located in Terminal 1, near gate B12, and Terminal 3, is the Terminal Gateway Spa . They offer “walk-in” services or appointments. Bask in a full body massage, and get a “Last-Minute” manicure or a “Jet-Lagged” foot massage. Bask in the calm, serene area of the spa or consider a facial and a wax if you have extended time.

Night time at Chicago O"Hare, airplane on ground.

5. Marvel At The Machinery

For many of us, watching airplanes never gets old and O’Hare has some great viewing areas. Over in Terminal 1, catch a bite and a view at Berghoff Cafe near gate C26. Head over to the food court in Terminal 1 and get a meal and a view. Back over at Terminal 3, near gate G10, head over to Chillis to order a burger and soda and watch the airplanes.

6. Destination Culinary Flight

I love to eat good food. Chicago O’hare Airport offers the opportunity to get a taste of Chicago without leaving the airport. Rick Bayless, a locally-known Chicago food rock star, and former Bravo Top Chef , has changed the face of airport dining with his very popular restaurant Tortas Fronteras. The Chicago Tribune coined the restaurant: “a reason to get delayed at O’Hare.” Enjoy an outdoor seating environment, similar to what you would experience in Italy enjoying northern Italian-style food in Tuscany.

A place for ice hockey buffs awaits at Stanley BlackHawks Kitchen and Tap. Dine on pub favorites, grub, and beer, soaking up the hockey ambiance. Belly up to the bar that is the Sushi Bar at Wicker Park Seafood in Terminal 2.

There are over 70 places to get food at this iconic airport, certainly more options than I can list. From fresh, farm-to-table vending machine salads to delicious worldly cuisine, there is something for everyone. And if you have time to leave the Chicago O’hare Airport, Chicago offers some must-try restaurants .

7. Cleared To Shop

Like most airports, there are a myriad of shops — such as the Dufry Duty Free Shop — bookstores, and fashion, something for everyone. Be sure to visit TMS to buy some local honey-infused products. The first airport Apiary (Bee Hive) is used to create products with a rehabilitation workforce and airport land.

8. Time To Sweat It

Although a bit of planning is required, consider catching a workout between flights. For a small fee, become a “Day Member” at the very popular Hilton Health Club , utilizing their indoor pool, sauna, and weight and exercise room with full shower service. It has two easy walking options, from Terminals 1, 2, or 3, and the Hilton inside the Chicago O’hare Airport complex. Choose a covered area, if weather conditions are extreme, or walk outdoors, both ways lead to the lobby.

Before leaving the secured area, visit your airline’s customer booking kiosk . Make sure you have a boarding ticket for your next flight, and skip waiting in the “check-in” line. If you have a carry-on bag or purse, walk directly to the security line and to the access gates. Consider trying “Clear” for two free months to go to the front of the line if you are traveling at a busy time of the year.

9. Luxurious Lounge

If leaving the airport to work out requires too much energy, consider utilizing the United Airlines or American Airlines day pass to their private customer lounges. Based on how many members are utilizing the clubs, each offer, for a fee, gives daily access to their lounges. Both airlines have lounges located amongst their gates and each has one lounge with shower access. It’s a relaxing place with tables, chairs, sofas, and recliners to wait away the hours. Depending on the time of day, food is complimentary as well as certain drinks. Cocktails, beer, and wine are available for an additional fee.

Do your due diligence, for rules that apply, before you arrive at the airport. Presently at this best airport worldwide , only United and American Airlines offer daily access to non-members. There are many credit card options and amenities available to make your travel experience better. I think it’s worth investigating.

10. Carnivals And Children

Located in Terminal 2 is a free 1,800-square-foot Family Lounge with stroller parking, device chargers, and a colorful seating area, all within a secured area designed to let your kids run wild before getting on a flight. Scheduled, live entertainment, and events within this lounge will keep the kids entertained — giving parents a moment to recharge their batteries while letting their kids burn off energy in a safe, enclosed area.

A private “Mother’s Room” is located next door. It’s a place to breastfeed, recharge, and change diapers, with a toilet and sink.

Mother's Private Room at O'Hare Airport.

11. Get In Touch With Your Spiritual Side During Layover

If you require a serene space to pray or meditate, visit the O’Hare International Airport Chapel is the place. The interfaith chapel is located on the mezzanine level of Terminal 2, directly overhead of the ticket counters for JetBlue and Alaska, and is open 24 hours a day.

Materials for worship such as bibles, Korans, rosaries, and carpets are provided.  Whether you are Jewish, Protestant, Roman Catholic, or Muslim, getting in touch with your spiritual side can be a great way to get away from the chaos of the airport.

12. Get Out of O’Hare

One of the best ways to spend time during a Chicago layover is to go sightseeing at places near the Chicago airport. Chicago L’s Blue Line from Terminal 2 will get you downtown in 45 minutes.

Once you’re outside the airport, you can explore some of Chicago’s world-class museums, the Adler Planetarium, and the Shedd Aquarium, or take in the gorgeous views on top of SkyDeck. Just keep in mind there’s plenty to do in Chicago, and you may lose track of time.

As awesome as airports may be, sometimes you just need to step out of them if your layover is pretty long.

And while taxiing out on your departure flight, look for the special grazing herd on O’Hare’s property , made up of sheep, goats, and a donkey, nibbling on the grass.

Is There Free Internet Access at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport?

Yes. Unlimited free Wi-Fi internet access is available throughout all terminals at O’Hare International Airport and is offered both pre and post-security. The internet speed may vary and it may be slower during peak hours.

How to Transfer Between the Terminals at Chicago O’Hare International Airport?

Every few minutes a free shuttle bus and a free fully-automated train system transport passengers and employees between Terminals 1, 2, 3, and 5. The terminals also take between 10-20 minutes to walk between depending on your gate.

Where Can I Get Travel Assistance at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport?

Travelers Aid Chicago social service agency located at O’Hare provides guidance, support, and advocacy services for passengers during travel. Travelers Aid volunteers stand ready to assist passengers throughout O’Hare Airport as well.

Is There Duty-Free Shopping at Chicago O’Hare International Airport?

Yes, Chicago O’Hare International Airport has a total of three Duty-Free stores in the airport’s busiest places. They are available in Terminals 1, 2, 3, and 5. In addition, the O’Hare International Airport offers a wide range of retail shops and newsstands for passengers’ convenience.

Is There Anything Open 24 hours at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport?

Yes, plenty of  Canteen Healthy Snacks and Farmer’s Fridge vending machines are available to grab a nighttime snack or well-needed coffee at Chicago O’Hare Airport so you can spend a night in the airport without interrupted sleep and a case of midnight munchies.

Pre-pandemic, Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) was the busiest U.S. airport in 2019 in terms of aircraft movements, serving over 900,000 flights. It’s a major airport for connections all over the U.S., operating as the main hub for United Airlines and the third-largest hub for American Airlines.

Flight connections are easy between the 3 domestic terminals, all connected by airside pedestrian walkways. However, Terminal 5 is a bit more of a journey for international flight connections. That’s set to change in the future with a huge expansion project currently underway that will replace Terminal 2 with a new “global terminal” to accommodate both domestic and international flights under the same roof.

In the meantime, here’s what you need to know to get around O’Hare.

The road system that runs inside ORD is a hexagonal shape, with Terminals 1, 2, and 3 situated along the outside of the bottom 3 sides, and the parking lots, Multi-Modal Facility (car rental), and I-190 located in the top half.

Terminals 1 to 3 are referred to as the domestic terminals, and these 3 terminals are connected to each other via pedestrian walkways.

Terminal 5, the last terminal to be built, is located a short distance from the other terminals, connected by shuttle services and the Airport Transit System (ATS). Although it is referred to as the international terminal, some international flights do depart from other terminals — but they only arrive into Terminal 5 .

Chicago O Hare International Airport Terminal 1

Terminal 1 (T1) consists of Concourses B and C, with Concourse B attached to the main terminal, and Concourse C as a satellite terminal , connected by an underground pedestrian walkway.

Overall, the terminal has 54 gates, numbered B1 to B12, B14, B16, B16A, B17, B17A, and B18 to B24 in Concourse B, and C1 to C10, C10A, C11, C15, C16, C16A, C17, C18, C18A, C19 to C23, and C25 to C31 in Concourse C.

Both concourses have shops and restaurants and a United Club . Concourse C also has a United Polaris Lounge , as T1 is the primary terminal for United Airlines for both domestic and international flights.

Hot Tip: Want to find other United lounge locations? Check out the full list of U.S. United Club lounges .

Chicago O Hare International Airport Terminal 2

Terminal 2 has a total of 41 gates across 2 concourses. Concourse E has gates numbered E1 to E17, and Concourse F has gates numbered F1, F3 to F7, F9 to F12, F14 to F17, and F19 to F28.

The lower numbered gates are situated in the main terminal, with E gates on the right and F gates on the left, until the terminal forks into the individual concourses.

There are shops and restaurants across both concourses and a United Club in Concourse F.

Chicago O Hare International Airport Terminal 3

Terminal 3 is a large terminal, consisting of 4 concourses and 76 gates numbered as follows:

  • Concourse G: G1A, G1B, G2A, G2B, G3 to G5, G6B, G7 to G14, G14A, G16 to G19, G19A, G20, and G21
  • Concourse H: H1 to H6, H8 to H10, H11A, H11B, H12, and H14 to H18
  • Concourse K: K1 to K6, K8 to K10, K12, K13, K15, K16, and K18 to K20
  • Concourse L: L1, L1B, L2A, L2C, L3 to L5, L6A, L6B, L7 to L9, L10A, L10B, L10C, L11, L11A, and L11B

If passing through the central security checkpoints, Concourse G is to the far right and Concourses H and K are down the main central walkway, with Concourse H to the right where it forks and Concourse K to the left. Concourse L is to the far left of the terminal.

Concourses G and L both have an Admirals Club, and Concourses H and K have an American Airlines Flagship Lounge.

Hot Tip: Are you an American Airlines flyer trying to find other Flagship Lounges? See the full list of U.S. AA Flagship Lounge locations.

ORD Terminal 5

Terminal 5 is ORD’s main international terminal , as it’s where the most international airline ticket desks are based. T5 also serves some domestic flights, and the other terminals serve some international flights.

In T5, flights depart from Concourse M, where there are 36 gates numbered M1 to M11, M13 to 21, M24 to M30, and M32 to M40. Passing through the security checkpoint, gates M18 to M40 are to the left, M13 to M17 are straight ahead, and gates M1 to M11 are to the right.

Chicago O Hare International Airport Connections

Connecting between Terminals 1 to 3 and Terminal 5 is usually straightforward via the Airport Transit System (ATS) that runs between terminals.

The train service also connects passengers to the new Multi-Modal Facility for the car rental center, economy parking lot F, Kiss ‘n’ Fly, Pace buses, and Metra.

Airside Transport Post-security

Terminal transfer bus (ttb) .

Chicago O Hare Terminal transfer bus

Hot Tip: The TTB service has been temporarily suspended .

The terminal transfer bus transports domestic arrival passengers between Terminals 1 to 3 and Terminal 5 for connecting flights, without the need to re-clear security again on arrival at T5.

This service is for passengers who are not required to collect their luggage in between connections, and it’s not available for international passengers arriving into T5 with connections in Terminals 1 to 3.

Buses operate daily from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and depart from the following locations in Terminal 3:

Terminals 1 to 3 are connected by airside walkways, which are useful for passengers arriving on a domestic flight and connecting to another domestic flight.

To walk from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2, the walkway is located on the departures level, opposite gates B5 and B6. The walkway arrives near gate E1 in Terminal 2.

To reach Terminal 3 from Terminal 2, the walkway is located near gate F1 and arrives into the rotunda of Terminal 3.

Walking time will depend entirely on which concourse and gate you’re walking to and from. The furthest points (Terminal 1, Concourse C to Terminal 3, Concourse L) are just over a mile apart from each other, so at an average speed, the maximum walking time would be around 20 minutes.

Landside Transport Pre-security

Airport transit system (ats).

Chicago O'Hare International Airport ATS

The ATS is a light rail service that stops at all terminals. It’s located outside of the secure area, so you do need to re-clear security again at your connecting terminal.

Each terminal has an ATS station located landside and is well signposted with “ATS” signs. Trains depart frequently and run in both directions, so you can choose the route that will get you to your connecting terminal quickest.

Hot Tip: Are you looking for some things to do while you’re there? Check out these popular Chicago activities and attractions .

Chicago O'Hare International Airport Expansion Plan

Chicago recently announced the winning architectural firm for the O’Hare 21 expansion plan for a new Global Terminal. With an estimated completion of 2028, you’ll be waiting a while. But the $8.5 billion expansion project will replace the existing T2 with a modernized terminal and 25 additional gates.

The winning design by lead architects Studio Gang aims to bring the outdoors in, with lots of trees, sunlight, and open space. T2’s additional capacity will enable both domestic and international flights to depart from the new terminal.

Now that the Airport Transit System has been newly renovated, passengers can now ride this free service between all the terminals and to the car rental center, Multi-Modal Facility, economy car parking lots, and Metra train station with ease.

Terminal 5 has also seen some significant improvements with its capacity increased by 25%, new roadway enhancements, and expanded curbside pick-up and drop-off areas.

5 Tips for Visiting Chicago for the First Time

Last Updated on July 27, 2023

Visiting Chicago for the first time? Brace yourself for an experience bursting with architectural marvels, culinary diversity, and a rich cultural scene. This guide is designed to help you make the most of your maiden trip to “the Windy City”.

Read on as we uncover some essential tips to make your first visit to Chicago an experience to remember.

Why You Should Visit Chicago

Chicago, affectionately known as “the Windy City”, is a remarkable destination for tourists. It’s not just the incredible architecture that leaves visitors in awe. You’ll be just as enchanted by the rich cultural history, world-class dining, and vibrant arts scene.

Museums of international reputation are a major draw, but the city’s lively music festivals often steal the show. Outstanding parks await exploration too. There are so many things to love about Chicago , almost too many to mention.

Here are some tips for your first visit to Chicago that will help you get the most out of your visit.

5 Handy Tips When Visiting Chicago for the First Time

1. plan your transfer from the airport to your hotel ahead of time.

Navigating a new city can prove challenging, particularly when you’re fresh off a flight and carrying heavy luggage. To alleviate any potential stress, book your airport transfer ahead of time. Consider a professional Chicago car service for comfortable, hassle-free transportation straight to your hotel. The city’s main airport, O’Hare, is about 45 minutes from Downtown Chicago, also known as “The Loop”.

2. Explore Beyond Downtown, aka The Loop

Downtown Chicago is commonly called “The Loop” because the Chicago subway (known as the L because it runs on elevated train tracks above the city streets) loops around what’s considered to be the center of the city, bordered by Lake Street on the north side, Wabash Avenue (east), Van Buren Street (south), and Wells Street forms the western border. The Loop offers many fantastic things to do, including the Willis Tower, plenty of shopping, great food, and the beautiful Chicago River Walk.

However: venturing beyond it is highly recommended. Areas like Wicker Park and Lincoln Park are filled with distinct attractions and delicious restaurants, providing visitors with a more local and authentic Chicago experience. It is also interesting to see how distinctly different each of the neighborhoods feel. If you’re an active person, I recommend renting a bicycle downtown and heading north along Lake Michigan.

3. Invest in a CityPASS

Chicago’s top attractions are all worth visiting, but the cost can quickly add up. A CityPASS serves as a valuable solution because it grants access to five paramount attractions at nearly half the price.

Furthermore, Skydeck Chicago – an exceptional viewpoint of the city – is included in the pass, and this is definitely a Must-Visit spot. Seeing the sprawling city and the vast lake (which seems more like an ocean than a lake!) from above will give you a whole new perspective of Chicago.

4. Embrace the Variety of Food

Don’t limit yourself to deep-dish pizza or hot dogs when you’re in Chicago; diversity is key here! The city takes pride in its rich culinary variety spread across different neighborhoods — Korean dishes in Albany Park or Mexican cuisine in Pilsen should be on your list too. A food tour around Chicago’s broad range of tastes can prove extremely satisfying – there are a number of guided food tours, or you can create a DIY food tour, including pizza, tacos and Polish pierogies. If you’re a fan of pizza, you should definitely hop on a pizza tour – Pizza City USA offers the best Chicago Pizza tours.

5. Check out Free Events

The city constantly hosts free events for both locals and tourists to enjoy. From concerts at Millennium Park during summer to fascinating art exhibits held in local galleries, there’s always something accessible for every visitor.

See if you’re visit aligns with the Taste Of Chicago, which is the world’s largest food festival (or plan your visit around it!), or if a food truck festival happens to take place while you’re in town – they’re culinary experiences you won’t forget anytime soon. You can find out which free events take place while you’re in town by doing a quick Google search for “free events in Chicago” or “the best free things to do in Chicago this month”.

Is Finding Hotel Accommodation in Chicago A Hustle?

Booking a hotel in Chicago doesn’t have to be a hustle. It’s home to a wide range of hotels with accommodation, ranging from luxurious five-star establishments to budget-friendly alternatives.

Nonetheless, it pays to book your stay well in advance. This is especially true when visiting during the peak travel season or big events. There may be a big trade fair happening during the time you’re planning to visit, Lollapalooza or the Chicago Marathon – and for events like these, hotels book up quickly.

Also, deciding on the location before booking can make a significant difference. Popular neighborhoods like The Loop or Near North Side are often favored by tourists due to their proximity to main attractions. Make sure you book a hotel in an area that makes the most sense for you.

Other Things to Know About Chicago Before Visiting

  • Public Transportation is Efficient : The city’s public transportation system, led by ‘The L’ trains and buses, is comprehensive, making it easy to navigate the city without a car.
  • Weather Can Be Unpredictable : Chicago has a reputation for having quite fluctuating weather. Packing layers and checking the forecast frequently can ensure that you pack appropriate clothing. The Chicago winters are known to be brutally cold, and the summers get very hot, but can come with unexpected downpours and intense summer storms.
  • It’s truly a Sports City : Whether you’re into baseball, basketball, or football, there’s always an exciting game to catch in this sports-loving city. Check the Chicago sports calendar to see if a game happens while you’re in town. Seeing the Cubs play in Wrigley Field is an incredible experience that not just baseball fans will appreciate.
  • The City Loves Festivals : Chicago hosts several festivals throughout the year covering music, food, art, and more. Checking the schedule before your visit could lead you to some entertaining experiences. The above-mentioned Taste Of Chicago is the most popular food festival, and Lollapalooza is one of the best music festivals in the country.

As you set off on your maiden voyage to explore Chicago, remember that the city offers a dynamic fusion of attractions and experiences. With these tips in hand, you can embrace the city’s charm and make your adventure truly memorable.
