What Are the Longest Cruises You Can Take?

By Sally Macmillan, Sue Bryant

Last updated: July 22nd, 2024

Longest Cruises - Celebrity Edge

  • Find a Cruise

Our longest cruises—those with itineraries of up to 19 nights—offer a wonderful opportunity to experience a variety of destinations in one memorable vacation. Some of these voyages are repositioning, transpacific or transatlantic cruises, depending on where they are sailing, while others are “one way”, from point to point, rather than starting and finishing at the same port.

You might board your ship in one continent and disembark in another, cross the world’s biggest oceans, and tick off an enviable wish list of different countries along the way. Leisurely days at sea allow plenty of time to make the most of your ship’s restaurants, spas, sporting facilities, and enrichment classes—or relax and do absolutely nothing.

Here’s a selection of our nine longest cruises and where they can take you.

19-Night Tahitian Treasures

Unique architecture of Pearl Harbor National Memorial

Pearl Harbor National Memorial in Honolulu, Hawaii

Board your ship in Honolulu for a memorable voyage across the Pacific Ocean to Sydney in the land Down Under on some of our longest cruise itineraries. If you can spare a few hours before embarking, a visit to the Pearl Harbor National Memorial is a rewarding, if sobering experience.

After five days to enjoy the South Pacific sunshine, you’ll arrive in the lush islands of French Polynesia.  Papeete, the capital of French Polynesia on the idyllic island of Tahiti , is the place to admire vast mounds of tropical fruit at the open-air market and inspect or buy black pearls at the Robert Wan Pearl Museum.

Lush landscape of Vaipahi Water Gardens

Vaipahi Water Gardens in Tahiti, French Polynesia

There are ample opportunities to snorkel and swim in unbelievably clear tropical lagoons or explore the island’s lush interior. One driving tour of the breathtaking West Coast takes in Polynesian sacred sites, Tahiti’s biggest underwater cave, and a walk through the magical Vaipahi Water Gardens.

Clear water of Moorea

Dreamy Moorea is characterized by jagged green mountains and tumbling waterfalls, as well as sparkling black sand beaches. Lush Raiatea, meanwhile, is the place for dazzling white sand beaches, tiny islets, and superb snorkeling.

After more time at sea to soak up the sunshine, you’ll arrive in Tauranga , the location of hot, bubbling mud springs and dramatic geysers.

One of the best things about cruising into Auckland on New Zealand’s North Island is that your ship docks right in the center of town. Many major attractions are within walking distance of the wharf, including the instantly recognizable Sky Tower. Take a trip to the top for panoramic views and, if you’re exceptionally brave, sign up for the 630-foot Sky Jump.

Majestic view of Haruru Falls

Haruru Falls in Bay of Islands, New Zealand

The Bay of Islands is not only a haven for wildlife lovers and adventure-seekers; it also played a pivotal role in New Zealand’s history. A wonderful way to learn about Maori culture is by joining members of the Ngapuhi tribe on a river trip aboard a traditional war canoe. As you paddle the Waitangi River from the spectacular Haruru Falls, storytellers regale you with tribal tales and local legends.

This epic voyage ends in Sydney . You’ll want to be up early to enjoy the arrival in Sydney Harbour, surely one of the world’s most beautiful approaches to port. Without a doubt, you should extend your stay to explore this dynamic city.

16-Night Galapagos & Machu Picchu Cruise

City view of Quito, Ecuador

Quito, Ecuador

Combine the thrill of exploring the extraordinary Galapagos Islands , a volcanic archipelago like nowhere else on Earth, with an in-depth tour to the Inca city of Machu Picchu, Cuzco, and the Sacred Valley.

There are multiple elements to this spectacular adventure, each one unique. Start your journey in Quito, the capital of Ecuador. One of the highest capital cities in the world, it’s surrounded with mountains on all sides, including the cone-shaped stratovolcano, Cotopaxi. Explore the Spanish colonial-era architecture and the cobbled squares of the city center.

You’ll fly to the Galapagos, 600 miles from the coast. Enter a world of active volcanoes, beaches of black, white, green, and sparkling red sand, and an astonishing array of wildlife .

Sea lions on a beach in the Galapagos

Beach in the Galapagos

Huge colonies of marine iguanas bask on jagged black rocks, while sea lions and their pups are hauled out on what seems like every beach, completely unafraid of humans. You’ll see dragon-like land iguanas, too, as well as Galapagos penguins and all manner of bird species , including blue-footed boobies, pelicans, and frigate birds.

Under the water is a miraculous world of canyons and rock walls teeming with fish in every color of the rainbow. You may see white-tipped sharks circling beneath you, or pop up for breath next to a sea turtle. For many, the Galapagos is a life-affirming expedition.

Longest cruises - Machu Picchu, Peru

Machu Picchu, Peru

The final part of your adventure takes you to Lima, the cosmopolitan capital of Peru . From there, you’ll fly to Cuzco, high in the Andes, and travel to the emerald green Sacred Valley.

Visit Ollantaytambo, a colossal Inca fortress. The next day, take a scenic train to Machu Picchu , one of the world’s most iconic sights. You’ll have time in Lima, too, to check out the city’s thriving culinary scene and sample a few pisco sours.

16-Night Bermuda & Spain Transatlantic Cruise

Quaint waterfront of Bermuda

Transatlantic cruises are among our longest cruises. This epic voyage departs from Tampa, Florida and sails to Rome, Italy over 16 nights, calling at four unforgettable destinations en route.

You’ll break the journey at Bermuda’s Royal Naval Dockyard , where you can explore the island’s military history, lounge on those famous pink sand beaches, and perhaps pick up a pair of Bermuda shorts as a souvenir.

Scenic waterfront promenade of Gibraltar, UK

Gibraltar, UK

Next, there’s a blissful seven days of crossing the Atlantic, the perfect chance to unwind, enjoy the many activities on board, and watch the rise and fall of the waves.

Your first glimpse of Europe will be craggy Gibraltar , clinging to the south coast of Spain, famed for its military installations and enduring colony of Barbary apes. A visit to the Great Siege Tunnels is one of the best things to do here.

Cityscape of Cartagena, Spain

Cartagena, Spain

Next, it’s to Spain, stopping at Cartagena , where a magnificent Roman amphitheater was uncovered in the city center in the 1980s. Once you’ve explored this fascinating site, head for the impressive National Museum of Underwater Archaeology.

Before your cruise ends in Rome , there’s a day in Barcelona, where a highlight is La Sagrada Familia, the astonishing basilica designed by the visionary architect Antoni Gaudí. After your visit here, visit the Picasso Museum, or wander the tangled alleys of the Gothic Quarter, stopping for tapas.

16-Night Panama Canal Cruise

Celebrity cruising the Bridge of the Americas

Bridge of the Americas, Panama

Bookended by Los Angeles and Fort Lauderdale, Florida, a Panama Canal cruise is one of the most popular of our longest cruises. In between visiting ports in Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica, and the Caribbean, you’ll experience the engineering marvel that is the Panama Canal, as well as enjoy leisurely days at sea.

Los Arcos in Banderas Bay, Puerto Vallarta is an instantly recognizable landmark, a series of granite rock arches, caves, and tunnels, around which the snorkeling is superb. The bay’s 60-plus miles of coastline takes in Los Arcos Marine Park plus an intoxicating mix of beaches, old Spanish colonial districts, and the busy Malecon boardwalk.

From here, you’ll sail to Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala , where you can visit the gorgeous old colonial city of Antigua, famed for its vibrant colors, and learn about coffee on one of the country’s many plantations.

Bridge in the middle of Monteverde Cloud Forest

Cloud Forest Reserve in Monteverde, Costa Rica

Costa Rica is renowned for its exotic wildlife, eco-adventures, and rare cloud forests. A trek in Monteverde’s mist-shrouded Cloud Forest Reserve reveals an incredible diversity of lush rainforest, rare tropical plants, dramatic waterfalls, and brightly colored birds and butterflies. The cooler climate makes a refreshing change—just remember to pack a lightweight rain jacket.

Gatun locks of Panama Canal

Panama Canal

Sailing through the Panama Canal is the centerpiece of this cruise. Connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, the 50-mile, man-made canal opened in 1914 and revolutionized sea journeys by cutting hundreds of miles from the original routes, which took ships all the way around South America.

The vast freshwater Gatun Lake, 85 feet above sea level, forms a major part of the canal. Be sure to be on deck to take in the scene, especially as your ship passes through the enormous locks.

Beautiful skyline of Cartagena

Cartagena, Colombia

Once you’re in the Caribbean, you’ll head to Cartagena, Colombia . This beautifully preserved walled city dates back to the 16th century and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The best way to explore its many cultural and architectural treasures is on foot, with a guide to fill you in on its fascinating history. Your final two ports of call in Jamaica and Grand Cayman offer a chance to unwind completely on glorious beaches, soaking up the Caribbean sunshine.

15-Night Australia Cruise

Sydney, Australia

Enjoy a leisurely, 15-night voyage from Sydney to Singapore, tracing the east and northern coasts of Australia and stopping in blissful Bali before heading north to Singapore.

Celebrity Solstice will glide out of Sydney Harbour and set a course north for Brisbane , the city’s skyscrapers gleaming in the sunshine of the Gold Coast. Check out some of the world-class art galleries, take a surfing lesson, or visit the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary for a close-up encounter with Australia’s cutest marsupials.

Couple snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef

Airlie Beach is the gateway to the spectacular Great Barrier Reef , whether you choose to explore on a snorkel trip, a dive, or a glass-bottomed boat. Admire the scenery from the air on a sightseeing flight over exquisite Heart Reef. There are further chances to explore the reef from Cairns, head into the rainforest, or even try whitewater rafting.

There’s a day in Darwin to experience the red rocks and cascading falls of Litchfield Park, learn about Aboriginal culture, and taste the freshest imaginable barramundi.

White sands of a beach in Bali, Indonesia

Bali, Indonesia

Then it’s farewell to Australia as you sail to Bali for an overnight stay. Head inland to arty, spiritual Ubud to visit the Sacred Monkey Forest or fly on a swing high over the emerald rice fields. Admire intricate Hindu temples, or simply sunbathe on Bali’s glorious beaches.

15-Night Portugal to Argentina Transatlantic Cruise

Longest cruises - Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon, Portugal

Embark on a thrilling Atlantic crossing aboard Celebrity Equinox, setting out from Lisbon , the Portuguese capital. There’s a stop in Tenerife to ascend Mount Teide, Spain’s highest mountain, or join a tapas tasting tour of Santa Cruz, the elegant capital.

You’ll have six blissful days at sea to commune with the mighty Atlantic and look out for whales and dolphins before making landfall at Brazil’s Salvador de Bahia . The city is famed for its colorful center, the whole of which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site thanks to its magnificent colonial architecture and 300 churches.

Longest cruises - Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Glamorous Rio de Janeiro , the next port of call, needs little introduction. Take the cogwheel railway up Corcovado Mountain to gaze at the colossal Christ the Redeemer statue, or people-watch on the wide sweep of Ipanema Beach.

You’ll then cross the border into Uruguay with a day in Montevideo to feast on steak and red wine. Your journey ends in Buenos Aires, the cosmopolitan capital of Argentina , famed for its tango, passion for football, and legacy of Eva Peron.

14-Night India, Sri Lanka & Thailand Cruise

You’ll have a day in dreamy Goa to relax under the coconut palms or admire Portuguese colonial architecture before heading south to Cochin. This city was once the hub of India’s spice trade and brims with character. Browse the craft shops in the historic center and snap a shot of the traditional Chinese fishing nets on the beach.

Cityscape of Colombo, Sri Lanka

Colombo, Sri Lanka

There’s an overnight stay in Colombo, Sri Lanka , giving you plenty of time to explore the beaches, learn about Buddhism, and admire the architecture of the city center. Hambantota, meanwhile, is the gateway to Bundala National Park, where you could spot elephants, buffalo, and a dazzling array of birds.

Scenic landscape of Phi Phi Island, Thailand

Phi Phi Island, Thailand

Thailand enjoys spectacular natural beauty. From Phuket , you could visit Phi Phi Island, with its movie-star looks, or dramatic Phang Nga Bay, dotted with otherworldly, jungle-tufted limestone towers.

Penang is your second overnight stay, where you can sample the multi-layered Malaysian cuisine. Explore UNESCO-protected George Town, where Christian churches sit alongside ornate mosques and Buddhist, Taoist, and Hindu temples.

Iconic Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

14-Night Antarctica Cruise

Icy landscape of Paradise Bay, Antarctica

Paradise Bay, Antarctica

Gaze in awe at the most pristine wilderness on earth, the White Continent, on a 14-night adventure from Buenos Aires on Celebrity Equinox.

The excitement mounts in Ushuaia , the world’s most southerly city, with the feel of a frontier town as it’s hemmed in between the snow-draped Martial Mountains and the island-speckled Beagle Channel.

View while cruising Cape Horn, Chile

Cape Horn, Chile

You’ll set sail between the rocky islands that make up the scattered jigsaw of Tierra del Fuego to windswept Cape Horn , guarded by a lonely lighthouse. Then, it’s out into the Drake Passage, where you could spot graceful albatross skimming the waves as you keep a lookout for the first icebergs.

Once the white mountains, rock-strewn shorelines, and vast icebergs of Antarctica are in sight, you’ll see all kinds of wildlife, from bustling penguin colonies to giant humpback whales. The landscapes are incredible; huge, creaking glaciers and icebergs shot with sapphire, their undersides a brilliant turquoise.

You’ll pass Elephant Island , where Shackleton’s crew were famously stranded for an entire winter, waiting for help after their ship became trapped in the ice.

Quaint waterfront of Port Stanley, Falkland Islands

Port Stanley, Falkland Islands

There’s more wildlife to admire around Port Stanley , the capital of the Falkland Islands. Encounter penguins and sea lions, learn about the islands’ military history, and stop in one of the British-style pubs. 10 Around-the-world Cruises for the Trip of a Lifetime

These world cruises offer the ultimate itineraries.

Elizabeth Rhodes is a special projects editor at Travel + Leisure , covering everything from luxury hotels to theme parks to must-pack travel products. Originally from South Carolina, Elizabeth moved to New York City from London, where she started her career as a travel blogger and writer.

cruises over 20 days

Want to island hop around French Polynesia, visit Africa's incredible cities, and cruise through Asia without ever switching hotels or repacking your bags? An around-the-world cruise provides the ultimate itinerary, packed with exciting international destinations (some even visit hard-to-reach destinations like Easter Island and Antarctica), and luxury cruise lines provide comfortable accommodations, specialty restaurants, and plenty to do on and off the ship.

There are two main things you need before booking a world cruise: plenty of time and some spare cash. Prices range from around $20,000 to upwards of $100,000 per person, and all our top picks are more than 100 days (one is even a whopping 275 days), so they're ideal for retired travelers looking for their next big adventure. Pack wisely for a range of destinations and climates, and get ready for the journey of a lifetime, filled with postcard-perfect destinations and new friends (because you're bound to meet a travel buddy or two after 100-plus days on a ship). If an around-the-world cruise is at the top of your travel list, you'll want to book sooner rather than later — these journeys frequently sell out because many cruise lines only offer a limited number of sailings.

Here are ten of the best around-the-world cruises you can take in 2023 and 2024.

Viking Ocean Cruises

Viking world cruise.
