EVOC Bike Travel Bag Pro vs EVOC Bike Travel Bag

evoc bike travel bag dimensions

If you are anything like me, you want to make sure you are getting the best tool for the job and not spending your money on features you do not need. Which leads us to this post, EVOC bike travel bag, and Evoc Bike travel bag pro seem to be the way to travel with your bicycle.

I had difficulty finding the difference between the two of them, so as I did my research and continue to do so these are my notes.

Table of Contents

General Differences

The Pro version is a little lighter but more importantly, it has an improved inside layout with better features for securing your bike.

Another notable difference is the disk brake rotor protection.  The original bag has some protection while the Pro version is much more substantial.

  • Released in 2008
  • Fits: road bikes, triathlon bikes, XC-, FR-, downhill bikes, 29“ bikes
  • Minimal Disk Brake Rotor Protection

Here you can see how a mountain bike and road bike will fit into the original bag.

Bike Travel Bag Pro

  • Released in 2015
  • Fits: road bikes, triathlon bikes, XC, DH, FR, enduro, ≤29“ bikes
  • Has Disk Brake Rotor protection

Mountain Bike Packed

Here you can see mountain bike its rear wheel of the bike fit into the travel bag pro.  When compared to the original, there are more straps, padding, and protection to keep the bike safe and secure. Included with the pro version is the frame pad, which wraps around the top and bottom tubes.

When it comes to wheels, disc brake rotors and cassettes, there is more protection. There is a thicker guar protecting the rotor and two braces to help protect the entire wheel.

Road Bike Packed

As you know road bikes are much smaller than mountain bikes, so you will have more room for your bike or more room to pack a larger bike.

In addition to the frame pad EVOC provides a road bike adapter to help keep everything snug.  the road bike adapter fits around the front forks.

The same wheel protection will help protect your cassette or disc brakes if your road bike has them.

This one is pretty straightforward the Original bike travel bag is available in five colors and the pro model is just two.

While the bags are pretty much the same the dimensions are a little different and one size could be a bit better depending on your bike style and size.

Differences according to the EVOC FAQ

I found the EVOC FAQ and here are what they say the differences are.

Essentially they say that the Pro Bag is a newly designed bag, with aluminum construction, molded parts, more warp resistant and lighter.

  • The Pro Bag is lighter 8000g compared to 9000g. About 2.2 pounds lighter.
  • Pro Bag wheels are smoother, quieter and better.
  • Pro Bag has tougher external material.
  • Pro Bag has a clip-on wheel.
  • Pro Bag comes with a road bike adapter
  • Pro Bag has better disc brake protection
  • Pro Bag has better straps, clips, and velcro making it easier to use
  • Pro Bag has stronger and lighter bike blot.

I hope you have found this post helpful.

For me I think the Pro Bag is the way to go.  With that being said if I found a great deal on the original back I might purchase that one.

If you have any questions or additional information to add please let me know in the comments.  I will do my best to get the question answered or the post updated.

Traveling with your bike can be a real hassle. But landing in a new location ready to hit the ground riding on your own two wheels can often outweigh the pitfalls associated with flying your bike or having to rent a bike at your location. That of course assumes that you can actually get your bike to your destination in one piece – which is not always guaranteed, regardless of the airline.

There are a number of different ways to pack and transport your bike, but when you get into the world of mountain bikes, especially with larger 29″ tires, things get a little more tricky. I ended up requesting a new EVOC Bike Travel Bag when I realized that my original Bike Travel Bag wouldn’t easily fit larger 29″ wheels. The newer bags have larger wheel pockets to fit more common tire sizes – though you may still have to deflate the the tires a bit if they’re on the larger side.

In addition to fitting most modern mountain bikes with ease (and road, gravel, and many other bikes), the EVOC Bike Travel Bag Pro has a number of other benefits going for it as well. Yes, soft sided cases are well, soft sided. But I’ve seen just as much damage done to bikes in hard cases as soft cases. How? It usually happens when TSA opens a hard case, and doesn’t put the bike back in properly, which usually results in pricey damage because it’s harder to put the bikes in those cases properly. To protect the bike, the EVOC bags have a rigid PE board perimeter with glass fiber vertical supports at the end and hard plastic rods inside the wheel compartments. Combined with using the wheels and wheel compartments as structural elements and additional PE board reinforcements with a hard plastic tub with aluminum rails on the bottom, the EVOC design seems to do pretty well for most in terms of protection. There’s also the fact that to an airline employee, a large soft bag (hopefully) won’t get stuff piled on top the way a hard case would.

How to pack & fly domestically and internationally with your bike using an EVOC Bike Travel Bag Pro

The soft sided design also has a huge benefit in terms of storage. Once you take out all of the supports, the bag can be folded down to the same size it ships in. This is far easier to store in your house, apartment, shed, than a full size hard case. Soft cases are also usually lighter than hard cases – an important detail if you’re trying to make checked baggage weight.

And what about cardboard boxes? Well, in terms of rigid protection, cardboard is probably equal to a bag like the EVOC, but it also takes a lot more work to properly box the bike so that it doesn’t get damaged. And if it’s raining while your bike box is on the tarmac, it likely won’t hold up so well.

How to pack a mountain bike for travel?

One of the main things that sets the EVOC Bike Travel Bag Pro apart from the standard Bike Travel Bag, is the addition of the Bike Stand which features thru axle (or QR) mounts for each end on an aluminum tray that is adjustable for different wheel base lengths (maximum wheel base of 126cm). This makes it a lot easier to load the bike in the case, and prevents the bottom of the frame, derailleur, and crank from resting on the bottom of a dirty bag.

How to pack your bike to avoid airline damage?

Up front, there are four different end cap sets included along with a set of spacers that can go under any end cap set for Boost spacing. That allows you to mount standard QR, 12mm, 15mm, and 20mm thru axles in both standard and Boost 110 spacing. There are also three vertical positions to mount the axle to best fit the fork/bike/bag.

how to pack your bike to avoid airline damage?

Out back, it’s the same story, this time with dummy axles in 5 x 130mm, 12 x 135mm, 12 x 142mm, 12 x 150mm, and 12 x 157mm (DH or Super Boost).

How to pack & fly with your bike using an EVOC Bike Travel Bag Pro

The axles slot through one of three vertical positions, and you install the thru axle through them and tighten it down like you would a hub.

How to pack & fly with your bike using an EVOC Bike Travel Bag Pro

One nice feature is the fact that the stand provides something for the derailleur to rest against. This way, if it gets hit from the side, it won’t bend the hanger, and you can leave the derailleur mounted in place. I was a little nervous to leave the derailleur on as I always remove it, but not having to do so saved a lot of time and effort. And it arrived at both ends of the journey with a straight hanger.

How to get a bike bag through the airport

The other thing that makes the Bike Travel Bag worth the Pro upgrade? The front wheel. It’s crazy how such a small detail can make the biggest difference, but when you’re trying to wheel a bike bag and a large roller bag through a crowded airport, the little wheel makes all the difference. Just remember to take it off and stash it inside the bag in a pocket before checking the bag. It clips in place solidly, but I wouldn’t trust it to stay on during the flight.

How to get a bike bag through the airport

The rear wheels are also excellent, with oversized replaceable wheels that can roll down stair cases and over curbs fairly easily. They’re also widely spaced to prevent the bag from tipping over.

Packing Tips

You will notice the bike above does not have a chain. Removing it is way easier than wrapping the chainstay to prevent damage from a flailing loose chain. Yes, SRAM says that their Power Lock chain connectors are not reusable. They may have a point, but I’ve also taken this one apart a few times now without issue. Do so at your own risk though, and make sure you bring a spare just in case.

EVOC does sell chain covers if you choose to leave the chain on and they state it has a separation flap between the chainstay and the chain to keep things protected.

how to pack a mountain bike for travel

You’ll also notice the extra bits of foam wrapped around many of the tubes (especially important for the suspension stanchions). As far as I’m concerned, you can never be too careful when flying with a multi-thousand dollar bicycle. You can pick up packs of this Frost King pipe insulation from your local home improvement store in different sizes for less than $2. It’s pre-slit, so all you have to do is cut it to length, and slap it on. Then when you’re done with your trip, just throw the pieces back in the bag to use them again the next time. To make it even easier on yourself, use a Sharpie to label them for where they go on the bike.

I used some 3/8″ insulation I already had around the house which worked pretty well for the smaller tubes, and stayed in place around the 34mm fork stanchions without the need for tape. Around the larger tubes like the downtube, either foam for larger pipes or masking tape is needed to make it stay in place.

how to pack a mountain bike for travel

While we’re on the subject of safeguarding your bike in the bag, always remove your rotors. Just do it. I was hesitant to leave them on for my first trip with the Bike Travel Bag Pro, but I thought “it has disc rotor protection pockets, I have to try it.”

So I did try it, and I ended up with one severely bent rotor by the time my bike arrived in Italy. That wasn’t the only damage (more on that in a minute), but it was damage that was easily avoidable – especially with Centerlock rotors. Bring a tool, remove the rotors and reinstall them at your destination.

how to pack a mountain bike for travel

If your bike didn’t come with them, you’ll also want to go down to your local shop and ask nicely for some plastic hub/axle protectors that companies stick in the wheels for shipping.

how to pack a mountain bike for travel

The EVOC bags have a reinforced plastic plate on the inside of the bag, but in our experience, this is not  enough to prevent the axle on the hub from wearing through. I recently had to send a review bike back that was shipped in a (well used) EVOC case because the hub had worn completely through this reinforced plate and then wore into the carbon chainstay. Not good. Adding these plastic protectors increases the surface area against the plate, and should extend the life of the bag (and your frame).

Ideally though, I’d like to see EVOC increase the thickness of these reinforcements, or maybe add a metal plate sewn in behind the plastic so that the hubs couldn’t ever wear through the plates.

how to pack a mountain bike for travel

This should go without saying, but you’ll want to slip in the correct pad spacer for your brake calipers. These are designed for this exact purpose and lock into place around the pad spring retaining pin, and it will save you a lot of hassle when you reach your destination and don’t have to reset your pistons.

how to pack a mountain bike for travel

The last bit of added protection I like to include is a layer of bubble wrap around the handlebar. The EVOC bags have a pretty decent way of securing the bar to the bike with the top tube pad and the bag with velcro straps, but there is still the chance of it getting knocked around inside the bag. Again, this is really simple, cheap protection that only takes a few seconds to add.

Once your bike is all loaded on the Bike Stand and placed in the bag, there are at least six velcro or buckle straps that are very important to attach around the chainstays, seat tube, top tube/downtube, and fork. These prevent the bike from moving around inside the bag which could damage the bag from the inside out if not secured properly. Clearly, dropper posts are an advantage here and I was able to leave my seat post untouched and just drop the saddle to fit. If you don’t have a dropper or have a particularly large frame, you may have to drop the post in the frame or remove it completely. The bike above is a medium Santa Cruz Blur TR which fit in the bag with lots of room to spare.

Bike Travel Bag Assembly Trick

For the most part, the EVOC Bike Travel Bags are super easy to put together. But this time I ran into an issue I hadn’t seen before – no amount of pushing could make the vertical supports insert all the way into their respective channels leaving two inches sticking above the top.

How to pack & fly with your bike using an EVOC Bike Travel Bag Pro

Before I broke out the hammers, an investigation of the channels revealed that the bottom of two of them had kinks that were preventing the support rods from passing through.

How to pack & fly with your bike using an EVOC Bike Travel Bag Pro

The solution was super simple though – just stick a flat blade screw driver into the gap between the plastic bumper and the fabric. This straightens out the channel, and allows you to fully insert the support rod.

What Tools Should I Bring?

Depending on your tolerance for assembling a bike with an annoyingly small or finicky  multi-tool, you may be able to get away without many of these. But for me, I like to have tools that make the bike building process as easy and quick as possible. But I also had to be aware of the overall weight limit of the packed bike bag. Depending on the airline, your weight limit will probably be somewhere around 50-70lbs. The bag itself weighs about 26lbs, so depending on your bike, that may not give you a lot to work with.

To keep it to the essentials, I brought along a 4mm T-handle allen (for stem bolts), a 5mm L-wrench allen with spare Gorilla tape wrapped around the middle (don’t forget the zip ties), and a combination 6mm/8mm wrench for pedals. I also brought along the Wolf Tooth Component Pack Pliers ($32.95) which are a must if you’re going to remove the chain again to ship the bike back home. Plus they let you store spare master links, they work as a tire lever, and a valve core tool, so they’re incredibly handy to have along. If you’re running Centerlock rotors, you’ll need a Centerlock tool to avoid the aforementioned bent rotors. The WTC Pack Wrench is ultra light and it has a magnetic 1″ hex at the bottom to use with their steel hex inserts. This way you can also bring along a cassette lock ring tool and their Pack Whip ($44.95). Anyone who’s ever hopelessly jammed a chain behind a cassette after a crash bent the hanger knows that this combo can be a lifesaver.

What to pack in your bike case for international travel. Wolf Tooth Components travel tools are light weight and compact.

The rest of the Pack Wrench inserts are interesting, but for most trips I don’t find it necessary to bring along a splined BB tool, 16mm hex, or 20mm socket (though the 20mm socket could be useful if you’re running one of Otso’s bikes with Tuning Chip dropouts). The 8mm could be handy for pedals though. These can all be purchased individually for $20 with the handle selling for $39.95.

What to pack in your bike case for international travel. Wolf Tooth Components travel tools are light weight and compact.

Wolf Tooth also sells this Travel Tool Wrap which is handy to keep all your tools in one place, and you can hang it from a car door for easy access. But for me, this is a bit overkill for the minimal amount of tools needed for traveling.

What to pack in your bike case for international travel. Wolf Tooth Components travel tools are light weight and compact.

If you’re really concerned about the weight of your bag, the tool wrap alone is 539g – more than the weight of most helmets. With the tools pictured above it was 1343g.

What to pack in your bike case for international travel. Wolf Tooth Components travel tools are light weight and compact.

Instead I threw most of the tools into one of the zippered pockets in the Bike Travel Bag Pro, and left the chain whip and lock ring wrench in the ziplock bags they shipped in. This prevents grease from getting on the brake rotors which were sharing a spot in one of the zippered pockets. Alternatively, you could find a ziplock big enough for the rotors to protect them that way as well.

How to pack your bike in a soft bike bag with other gear?

What Else Can I Pack In there?

This all depends on the weight requirements of the airline you’re flying with, but you should be able to fit some of the bulkier riding gear in there. That includes your helmet (a helmet storage pod is a good way to protect it during shipping), hydration pack or hip pack, and shoes and pedals. The area below the downtube works well to stash these items as it keeps them in place. Other lighter items like bulky jackets, clothing, and more can be placed anywhere else in the bag as well.

What to do if the airline damages your bike or bike bag or bike case?

What Should I Do If My Bag or Bike Gets Damaged?

Unfortunately, I got to deal with this issue on the very first trip with the Bike Travel Bag Pro. Judging by the 15 or more other EVOC bags that all arrived to the Pirelli launch unharmed, it was clear that this was probably a result of the airline mishandling the bag during transit, but what now?

What to do if the airline damages your bike or bike bag or bike case?

The most important thing you can do if you notice damage is to go to the baggage counter  while you’re still at the airport . If you leave, and in many cases wait more than 12 or 24 hours, you will be completely out of luck in terms of getting compensation from the airline.

I learned that the hard way on this trip. I had just arrived to Italy on a delayed flight, it took forever for my bike bag to appear, and other journalists and the Pirelli crew were waiting for me. I thought, “OK, I’ll deal with this later.” Fortunately, Delta took pity on me even though it was a codeshare flight with Alitalia and they made it very clear to never make that mistake again. Don’t expect this to happen often though – or to be fairly compensated. This $695 bag was brand new on its first flight and Delta offered a $100 voucher for a massive hole that was ripped into the main compartment and broken stitching in three places. However, I was also told that this would be covered under warranty through EVOC if it was determined that it was a simple seam failure – with EVOC offering a two year warranty for defects.

What to do if the airline damages your bike or bike bag or bike case?

Long story short, travel with some Gorilla tape – you never know when you may need it. This tape job held all the way back to my house, though it sure isn’t pretty.

evoc bike travel bag pro

It’s important to point out that in spite of the bag being roughed up, there was zero  damage to any of the bike or components in the bag other than the bent brake rotor. The various reinforcement pieces seemed to do their job, and in spite of the damage to the bag, I was able to ride my own bike in a completely new location. Because of that, I would happily use the Bike Travel Bag Pro to fly with my bike again. It takes a little extra effort to get the most out of the bag, but if you plan ahead, you should arrive with your bike in one piece and ready to hit the trails.

I purchased a Trico Iron Case in ’99. They are big, clumsy and heavy (35 lbs) compared to something like the EVOC Pro. However, in using for the last twenty years to haul bikes all over the US, Canada and to Europe my bikes have never been damaged in the slightest way. These include alloy, steel and carbon bikes including big travel 29er’s. In fact, there have been multiple times where I put parts/tools in loose and they arrived in the exact same place. It is by no means as pleasant nor as fast to pack as my friend’s EVOC’s but I will deal with this inconvenience for the proven security it provides.

Really well written piece with plenty of nuggets (remove rotors etc). The comments section is also worth reading. Cheers!

Great tip on using a flat blade screwdriver to straighten the channels for the fiberglass stays. I really struggled with the ones in the front, and finally got them in, but I’ll try this next time I assemble the case.

Evoc Bike Travel Bag Pro Review: A Few Flights With the Sturdy Travel Bag

Evoc Bike Travel Bag Pro Review: A Few Flights With the Sturdy Travel Bag

By: Josh Weinberg October 5, 2022

Evoc’s Bike Travel Bag Pro is what the German brand refers to as their “high-end” solution for bike transport. It’s a soft/hard-sided hybrid case with multiple integrated bells and whistles designed to keep bikes safe and secure in transit. I’ve used the Travel Bag Pro on a few flights this year and, while I’m not a big fan of air travel nor checked luggage in general, this bag has been a pleasure to use.

Let’s check it out in detail below!

evoc bike travel bag pro

Prior to this year, I went a while without flying, and even longer without hauling a bike with me (or checked bags for that matter), but had some trips recently where traveling with my bike made more sense than shipping it or renting once at my destination. My only former experience with bike luggage was an old two-piece hard side case that worked well for road bikes and some older MTBs, but I sold it once my mountain bikes got bulkier and no longer fit.

There are plenty of options for bike travel bags and cases on the market these days, and I honed in on the Evoc line because they appeared to have a balance of efficiency and strength. The soft upper portion also allows them to be collapsed when not in use for easier storage. I own a few Evoc camera bags, as I appreciate their thoughtful organizational layouts and overbuilt qualities, so had an idea of what I’d be getting from one of their bike bags.

The Bike Travel Bag Pro appeared to hit most marks for me: collapsable, accommodates fairly large frame/wheels, and is simple to use with only minimal bike disassembly. But, it is not without drawbacks, which I’ll explain more below.

evoc bike travel bag pro

1988 Toyota Pickup tailgate for collapsed scale

The Pro version of Evoc’s bike travel bags, specifically, utilizes a padded upper nylon portion with removable plastic “sticks” and “tubes,” while the lower hard deck is further strengthened when the bike is loaded onto the aluminum-railed bike stand (included, but also sold separately ). It also fits a fairly large max bike size, which was a selling point over other bags on the market. My Sklar Sweet Jammer has a 1227mm wheelbase which essentially maxed out the bag lengthwise (1300mm is the longest wheelbase that will fit).

  • Capacity: 310L
  • Weight: 22.04 lbs (including clip-on wheel + bike stand)
  • Dimensions: 147 x 36 x 85 cm (Inside 136 x 27 x 80 cm)
  • Maximum bike wheelbase: 130cm
  • Collapsible to 147 x 36 x 22 cm for easy storage

Travel Bag Pro Setup and Loading a Bike

The bag arrived completely collapsed and required the bike stand to be assembled and the sticks/rods installed to give it shape. I first made the mistake of trying to load the bike frame while the stand was inside the bag. My bike comes so close to maxing out the stand/bag that there was hardly any clearance to do so. Hot tip : load the bike on the stand and then  lift everything into the bag together.

Evoc includes a pack of axle adapters sized for “all modern axle standards.” These adapters slot into the hubs at each end of the bike stand, which the bike is then attached to as if threading axles through wheel hubs for a secure fit. Hubs are height adjustable using a series of vertically-slotted holes. I tried to find the sweet spot where my chainring would be elevated off the floor of the bag, while also leaving a buffer at the top where the stem wouldn’t protrude too much into the top of the bag.

With the stand together I removed my wheels and handlebar to mount the bike on the front and rear axle brackets (notice the tape measure in the above image indicating my bike just 9cm shy of reaching the stand’s max length). With the bike affixed to the stand, my handlebars came off and I strapped them to the included top tube protector.

With my bike taking so much lengthwise real estate on the stand, I was forced to remove the derailleur to make it all fit in the bag. This wasn’t really a big deal and I actually appreciated not having it protruding from the bike’s rear end and, rather, resting on the floor of the bag where it was less prone to impact and damage.

I typically ride with chunky 29×2.6 tires on wide rims, so the bag needed to have large wheel holsters. This bag has two separate wheel compartments on the aft end, each with reinforced disc and cassette protectors. The compartments take two 2cm diameter plastic rods for shape and, seemingly, offer added protection to the wheels from outside impacts. These rods would be easily replaceable with PVC of a similar diameter. Fully deflating the Teravail Kessels allowed the entire tire/wheel assembly to slide right in.

No tire removal + no disc removal + no cassette removal = travel bliss!

In addition to adjustable positioning for hub/axle configuration, the bag’s interior includes a variety of strap positions to secure the bike to the side of the case. There are three interior pockets; one clear pocket is located on the sidewall and was perfect for storing pedals, tools, and other bits like my stem clamp and bolts. I stashed my shoes, helmet, and tool roll on the floor of the bag rather than in my stuffed carry-on luggage. I figured that if the bike bag was delayed in transit, I’d have little use for my helmet and shoes anyway and, thus, didn’t need them with me.

Traveling with the Bike Travel Bag Pro

Weighing in at 24lbs, this bag is heavy. I think it will be a challenge for most folks traveling with mountain bikes in this bag to stay under the 50lb limit of most major airlines. I tried to work around this and book a recent flight through Alaska Airlines, which has a reasonable $30 fee for “sports equipment.” Unfortunately, that flight happened to be operated by American Airlines, whose staff looked bewildered when presented with my bike bag and did not hesitate to slap the $100 fee on it.

In retrospect, I could have packed the wheels and gear in a separate bag to reduce weight and likely avoid the $100 surcharge, but would have then been dinged the standard $30 or $40 per bag. In the end, it’s largely a wash between shipping, renting, and checking when figuring in the upcharge, but the convenience of flying with your bike often outweighs alternatives.

The bag rolls on two permanently affixed rear wheels and one optional clip-on front caster that slides into a hole in the aluminum handle system. Evoc claims these are skateboard wheels, but they look more like scooter wheels to me. Regardless, they are replaceable, which is a bonus.

I can’t imagine using this bag without the front wheel. It makes maneuvering around airports a breeze. Just don’t forget to detach it and store it in the bag’s front pocket. It merely rests in the handle slot, so will fall out as soon as the bag is lifted off the ground!

After a few flights with the bag, I noticed a few areas of material wear, both on the inner ripstop nylon and the outer cordura. At this point, I’m blaming this on myself for the way I packed the bike. I don’t think I was careful enough about where my brake levers and handlebar head unit mount were placed inside the bag, which then caused abrasions with who-knows-what was stacked on it during transit. Hopefully I can pack better in the future to eliminate this from happening again. It’s a good lesson, though, and another reason I’m happy with my decision to remove the derailleur rather than try to make it fit in the bag while attached.

The Bike Travel Bag Pro has done everything I need it to do and more, though it’s not without it’s shortcomings that I’ve attempted to point out. So, to wrap this review, here is a list of pros and cons I’ve identified in my time with the bag:

  • Solid, secure, protective
  • Folds to compact size for storage
  • Simple assembly and bike loading
  • Ample internal pockets for small bits
  • Adjustable for a variety of bike types and sizes
  • Easy to maneuver when loaded
  • Expensive (MSRP $795)
  • Heavy (24lbs)
  • Variety of axle adapters leaves a lot of unused plastic pieces
  • Potential for material wear

1. Kedah State Museum, Alor Setar

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Encik Romy Spaxco (@romyspaxco)

Kedah is said to be the oldest state in Malaysia, where civilisation began on the peninsula. The state also carries the pride of being the birthplace of several notable Malaysians, including the nation’s Father of Independence (Tunku Abdul Rahman), the only prime minister to be elected twice (Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad), and the only Sultan who served as Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia twice (Sultan Abdul Halim).

The State Museum is THE place to gain insight into Kedah’s rich history, from its ancient civilisation in Bujang Valley to the present-day industrial hub.

Address: Muzium Negeri Kedah, Lebuhraya Darul Aman, Bakar Bata, 05100 Alor Setar, Kedah

2. Historical landmarks around Alor Setar

In the capital city of Alor Setar , historical buildings stand proudly alongside modern landmarks around the main heritage square, known as Medan Bandar (also known as Dataran Alor Setar). These buildings are within walking distance of each other, and although most of them are not open to the public, visitors admire them from the outside.

The immediately noticeable landmark at the square is the Zahir Mosque (Masjid Zahir), one of the oldest mosques in the country. Built in 1912 and opened in 1915 by the Sultan of Kedah, the mosque has a distinctly Moorish architecture.

Next to the Zahir Mosque is the Big Clock Tower (Menara Jam Besar), which broadcasts the Muslim Call to Prayer, the Adhan, five times daily. Right across the street from the clock tower is the Nobat Hall (Balai Nobat), a three-storey octagonal tower housing the sacred instruments of the Nobat musical ensemble, which only plays during royal ceremonies such as inaugurations and weddings.

Just a stone’s throw away is the Grand Audience Hall (Balai Besar). Built in 1735 by the 19th Sultan of Kedah, the original building was restored after it weathered attacks from the Bugis armada in 1770 and Siamese forces in 1821. Today, the Sultan of Kedah still uses the striking landmark, which has elaborate carvings, arched stairways, and high ceilings, for selected royal ceremonies and state functions.

Within the city square are also the Kedah Royal Museum and Kedah State Art Gallery (Balai Seni Negeri Kedah), where one can learn about the history of Kedah’s sultanate and see the works of contemporary local artists, respectively.

3. Pekan Rabu, Alor Setar

From the city square, you can walk over to Pekan Rabu on Jalan Tun Ibrahim, a bustling bazaar where an assortment of local goods and food are sold. Its name literally translates as ‘Wednesday Town’; the marketplace was named such because it used to operate only once a week.

Pekan Rabu has special significance for the locals. Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Muhammad once worked as a trader here when his medical studies were interrupted during the Japanese Occupation.

The state’s tallest structure, a 165.5-metre telecommunications tower, soars above the city skyline. It was designed to resemble a bunch of paddy stalks as an homage to rice farmers.

From the tower’s Observation Deck, 88 metres above ground, you’ll get a sprawling panoramic view of the city’s landscape. Above the Observation Deck, at 94 metres, is the Alor Setar Tower 360 Degree Revolving Restaurant, where you can dine with a spectacular view.

Further up top, at 100 metres high, is the Megaview Banquet Hall, an aptly named event space. Here, visitors can take a hydraulic lift up to Star View, two units of glass boxes on the Open Deck at 105 metres high, where the whole of Kedah, as far as the eye can see, is practically under their feet.

Do note that tickets to the Observation Deck and Star View are priced differently, and rates are an additional RM1 higher on weekends.

Address: Jalan Putra, Bandar Alor Setar, 05150 Alor Setar, Kedah

Next is Rumah Kelahiran Tun Dr. Mahathir (Birth Home of Tun Dr. Mahathir). Amazon Kindle Paperwhite (2021) review

The Kindle Paperwhite has had a spruce-up and then some

kindle paperwhite text to speech hack

It can sometimes feel like Amazon launches a new Echo device every time you go to make a cup of tea, but the company is a lot more relaxed when it comes to Kindles.

The entire point of a Kindle is that you exclusively read books on it, and there’s only so many ways you can jazz up plain text on a colourless display. Still, it’s been a long time since Amazon updated its Goldilocks e-reader, the Kindle Paperwhite, presumably because the old model has been selling consistently well since it debuted in 2018.

Given the wait, it’s not surprising that in 2021 the Kindle Paperwhite has had a spruce-up and then some. We’re talking about a larger display, reduced bezels, adjustable warm light and USB-C charging. And if you pay a bit extra for the fancy Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition you get more memory, wireless charging and an auto-adjusting front light, a la the top of the range Kindle Oasis.

There’s also a redesigned interface, which makes bookworming the day away easier than ever.

Design and features: bigger is better

kindle paperwhite text to speech hack

Oasis and the oft-forgotten Kindle DX aside, Kindles have had 6in displays since Amazon invented its e-reader in the late noughties. And honestly, we’ve always felt that it was a perfectly fine display size for reading books.

But Amazon has seen fit to up the new Paperwhite’s display from the tried and tested 6in to 6.8in, trimming down the surrounding bezels in the process. A bit of extra space is welcome and overall makes for a more pleasurable reading experience, but it does mean that the 2021 Paperwhite is noticeably larger than its predecessor, both in width and height, even if it is a teeny bit slimmer. Small-handed users might find the proportional change to be unwieldy, but it didn’t particularly bother us.

It definitely looks and feels different, but the new Paperwhite does lift several design elements from the previous model. Once again the display is completely flush, you’ve still got that grippy plastic back and there remains a slightly unwelcome Kindle logo below the screen. The lack of buttons means all interaction with the device when reading relies on the touchscreen, which like every Kindle before it is totally fine but lacks the responsiveness of modern phones and tablets. The best thing about the more expensive Kindle Oasis is its side-mounted page-turning buttons, and we do wish Amazon would add something similar to the mid-range e-reader.

For reasons we can’t explain, the sole button (power) the Paperwhite does have is located at the bottom of the device, next to the charging port. Not only is this a bit awkward to reach with any finger bar your thumb, but if you’re reading with the Kindle propped up on your lap it’s not impossible to accidentally nudge it into standby.

The most notable feature of the 2018 Kindle Paperwhite was probably IPX8 waterproofing, and it’s still very useful nearly four years on, allowing you to read in the bath without fear of butter fingers.

You get 8GB of storage on the standard model, which is enough to hold a library of thousands of books. The Signature Edition comes with 32GB, and you’ll really need to go some to fill that up. Both models support Bluetooth headphones for Audible audiobooks.

USB-C charging is a very welcome addition, and the Signature Edition adds wireless charging too. It’s a shame Amazon denied the cheaper model that option, as most of us have several Qi charging pads lying around now, and to our mind it’s more a useful feature than one that should be considered premium.

Display: Warming to it

kindle paperwhite text to speech hack

As for the display itself, it might be larger than before, but Amazon has kept the pixel density at 300ppi. You’re almost always just looking at text so there’s no need to make it any sharper as far as we’re concerned. The monochrome display is 10% brighter at its max setting compared to the last-gen model, although it’s rare we feel the need to crank it up that much anyway.

A more significant enhancement is the warm light function, which was added to the Kindle Oasis in 2019, and when employed in conjunction with brightness turns the frontlit display various shades of amber rather than blue, which is much easier on your eyes late at night and at the right setting makes the pages look more like those of a real-life paperback.

As with the Kindle Oasis before it, there’s no automatic display temperature adjustment like you get with most half-decent smartphones these days, so you’ll probably spend more time fiddling about in the settings to get it right than you’d ideally like to.

The standard Paperwhite doesn’t have automatic brightness either; you’ll need a Signature Edition for that. But a warmth setting really closes the gap on the Kindle Oasis, so unless you really want the buttons, we’re not sure it’s still worth the extra cash. That is, until a new model is launched, which could happen early next year if we had to guess.

The biggest strength of the Paperwhite display (and any Kindle display for that matter), though, remains the fact it is gloriously glare-free, which no tablet, no matter how ludicrously powerful, can match. It’s why e-readers are still by far the best way to read books that aren’t bound by paper when outside.

Software: new and improved

kindle paperwhite text to speech hack

Along with most other Kindle models released since 2015, the new Paperwhite features a redesigned user interface that makes navigation easier. A bar at the bottom now lets you quickly hop between the Home screen, your currently open book – displayed by a small cover art icon – and the Library screen. There’s also a prominent search bar at the top for finding a particular book quickly without having to swipe through your entire library.

You can now swipe down from the top of the screen, smartphone style, to access quick settings like airplane mode, Bluetooth and dark mode, as well as the adjustable brightness and warmth sliders. Amazon has also added the option of having the cover of the book you’re currently reading on the lockscreen, reminding you to get it read.

All the changes are good ones, although they do relegate the Kindle Store icon to a tiny shopping telly at the top right of the screen. Initially, we were scratching our heads a bit as to how we were supposed to buy books with the new software.

Otherwise, it’s much the same experience as before. You can swipe up on the Home Screen to see recommended books based on your reading history and active subscriptions. When you’re reading a book it’s easy to look up words, hop to different chapters and change everything from font style and size to page layout and theme. Getting around is still sluggish in comparison to using an iPad, but we’re happy to sacrifice a bit of speed for eye comfort and the lack of other distractions that can make trying to get through a book on a tablet problematic

Performance and battery life: fast reader

Amazon says page turns on the new Paperwhite are 20% faster than before, and we definitely noticed a bit of speed boost where E Ink refreshing is concerned. Loading books feels slightly snappier too. You still wouldn’t call it zippy, but the days of Kindles feeling slow to the point that using one can actually be a bit of a chore are long gone.

As for battery life, Amazon says you can expect up to 10 weeks if you’re only reading casually and not getting overzealous with screen brightness. Admittedly we haven’t yet had our review unit for even half of this time, so can’t say either way.

What we can say for sure is that battery drain is still remarkably slow – a good three or four hours probably won’t see you drop more than a few percent – and even hardcore bibliophiles won’t have to worry about regular trips to the nearest plug socket. If you do somehow kill it without realising, a 9W USB-C charger will juice the Kindle up fully in 2.5 hours.

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite verdict

kindle paperwhite text to speech hack

With the redesigned and markedly improved Kindle Paperwhite there’s really no reason why Amazon’s Godzilla-like dominance of the e-reader market won’t continue until the next update. The slightly larger display is just about worth the added heft, while the warm light setting means the gap between the middle child Kindle and the comically expensive Kindle Oasis has never been smaller. We only wish it would pinch it’s flashier brother’s page-turn buttons, too.

The new interface gets a thumbs-up too, and when it comes to ebook stores Amazon’s enormous library and great value Kindle Unlimited subscription continue to win out. That is, providing you’re happy to buy all your books from Amazon, because it doesn’t make it all that easy to read from other sources.

The question isn’t whether you should buy a Kindle if you want an e-reader. That is – perhaps sadly – pretty much a given. The question is what model. Well, we’ve always recommended the Paperwhite as the one to go for, and the 2021 model’s enhancements only cement that further. Sure, the Oasis still offers the ultimate non-actual-book experience, but it’s simply not worth the extra £100. Nowhere close now.

If you have the previous edition and are wondering if it’s worth upgrading, that depends on how much you think the adjustable warm light would improve your reading experience. It’s definitely both nicer to look at and easier on the eye, but we don’t think it’s so essential that you should chuck your old one out of the window immediately.

Stuff Says…

Score: 5 /5

The Kindle almost everyone should buy remains the Kindle almost everyone should buy

Bigger display

Warm light is a great addition

Positive changes to user interface

USB-C…finally

No buttons for turning pages

Awkwardly positioned power button

Larger size won’t suit everyone

Paurush dabbles around iOS and Mac while his close encounters are with Android and Windows. Before becoming a writer, he produced videos for brands like Mr. Phone and Digit. On weekends, he is a full-time cinephile trying to reduce his never-ending watchlist, often making it longer.

  • The text-to-speech feature on Kindle is called VoiceView Screen Reader.
  • You can use VoiceView Screen Reader on Kindle while driving or finishing your tasks.

Enable Text-To-Speech on Kindle

The VoiceView Screen Reader is an accessibility feature that lets you listen to Kindle books over Bluetooth. This feature is available for all Kindle models that support Bluetooth.

Step 1: On your Kindle home screen , tap the three vertical dots at the top-right corner and select Settings .

Step 2: Tap on Accessibility and select VoiceView Screen Reader .

Step 3: Enable the toggle for VoiceView Screen Reader .

Step 4: Keep your Bluetooth device in Pairing Mode while your Kindle device tries to connect with it.

Step 5: After your Kindle detects the Bluetooth device, hold two fingers on your Kindle screen to finish the pairing process.

After pairing your Bluetooth device, you will hear an audio response while navigating your Kindle. You must first select and then double-tap to use the feature or option.

Step 6: Go back and open the book you are reading to use the text-to-speech feature.

After opening your book, the feature will start working automatically.

Adjust Speech Rate on Kindle

Step 3: Tap on Speech Rate . Select the reading speed of your choice.

You can tap the toggle for VoiceView Screen Reader again and select Turn Off to disable it.

How to Fix Kindle Text-To-Speech Not Working or Keeps Stopping

If you can’t use the VoiceView Screen Reader feature on your Kindle, reconnect your Bluetooth device.

Step 1: On the Kindle home page , tap the three vertical dots in the top-right corner and select Settings .

Step 3: Tap on Bluetooth Devices . Select Bluetooth Wizard to disconnect your Kindle from all Bluetooth devices.

bluetooth devices text to speech kindle

Step 5: Reconnect your Kindle with your Bluetooth device and check if the problem is solved.

Another reason the VoiceView Screen Reader is not working might be the low battery levels on your Kindle. We suggest charging it and checking back later to see if the problem is solved. Refer to our post if your Kindle is not charging .

If the problem continues, you might have to install a new Kindle software update. Here’s how to check for one.

Step 1: Tap the down arrow at the top of the Kindle screen to reveal more options. Then, select All Settings.

Step 2: Tap the three vertical dots in the top-right corner and select Update Your Kindle .

If the option is greyed out, your Kindle is already running on the latest software version.

You can also refer to our post if your Kindle is not allowing you to save your highlights while reading ebooks.

How to Use Text-to-Speech with Kindle for PC

March 18, 2018 by Nathan

Kindle for PC Text-to-Speech

Last year Amazon added text-to-speech support to their Kindle for PC application for Windows computers.

Kindle for PC is free to download and use, so if you have a Windows computer and need a text-to-speech program you don’t have to buy a separate device to read Kindle books aloud.

Not all Kindle books support TTS but a lot of them do.

It says on the product page if an ebook supports TTS or not under the “Product details” section.

Kindle for PC’s text-to-speech feature also works with non-Amazon content. I tested a few MOBI and PRC files and TTS worked fine.

PDFs can be imported into Kindle for PC as well and text-to-speech works with them too.

One annoying thing about Kindle for PC is the fact that it doesn’t support personal documents that you’ve added to your Amazon account, but it will open supported files from your computer.

Here’s a basic summary on how to use TTS with Kindle for PC:

Text-to-Speech Keyboard Shortcuts

To use TTS with Kindle for PC you have to turn it on in the Tools menu, or press “Ctrl,T” on your keyboard.

Toggle Text-to-Speech: Ctrl, T Pause or resume reading: Space bar (while in a book) Read the previous sentence: Ctrl, Shift, Up arrow Skip forward one sentence: Ctrl, Shift, Down arrow Increase speech rate: Shift, + Decrease speech rate: Shift, – Toggle continuous reading: Ctrl, Shift, C

For what it’s worth, some Kindle Fire tablets support that text-to-speech feature. My 7 inch HD and 6 inch Fire 6 both have a setting for text-to-speech on a ‘more settings’ menu tab, and once that is selected, books that support text to speech will show a ‘play’ button at the bottom of the page.

I’m not sure if this is possible, but i’d quite like to have Kindle reading to me in the background whilst I’m doing something else on my PC. Unfortunately when I tab away from the kindle ap it stops reading. Is there any way to have it keep going. (sounds simple but I don’t seem to be able to find how to do it!)

This post just exposed me to the wonderful sounding Kindle for PC with Text-to-Speech.

About losing access when you tab away… try opening an entirely new window to continue browsing. It will leave the speech playing and you won’t have to navigate away to a new tab in the same browser.

Couldn’t hurt to try!

' src=

March 9, 2021 at 2:14 pm

Sorry…. but it is not working… It is not about using another tab in a browser. It is about using even another software in the PC while kindle speech is playing. Need to keep it running in the background.

May 12, 2021 at 12:12 am

I use a screen recorder such as Camtasia (while I sleep) to record a whole book. I then convert it to MP4 format and put it on my mobile devices as necessary, and can play it in the background. Best part is it allows me to easily jump around. Just make sure your screen recording captures the position in the book, so you know where you are up to at any point.

Text-to Speech is working but too slow and the ‘SHIFT +’ doesn’t work. Initially the speed was a bit high and I tried the SHIFT-. After this command I lost the control of this function. I uninstall the ‘Kindle for PC’ app and install it again but the problem was not solved. Do you have any hint?

No sound! The Text to Speech function appears to be active in the Kindle Text to Speech menu. When Start Text to Speech is selected there is no sound. I tried a PDF file with the same result. Any suggestions?

On my Kindle Fire, I can chose different voices for reading my ebooks. Is there any option for choosing a different voice in the PC app??

March 13, 2019 at 11:16 pm

Tried CTRL,SHIFT,C to get the test to speech feature to read continuously. It tells me I am in single page reading mode and therefore stops at the end of a page. How do you get out of single page mode?

As someone mentioned earlier, the PC Kindle app Text-to-Speech feature stops reading as soon the the Kindle window loses focus. Even if you use tools to keep the Kindle window on top, it still loses focus and stops reading the instant you try to use another app. I believe this annoying behavior (blocking you from using the PC for any other purpose while the reader is in use) is by design to ensure this feature doesn’t interfere with Amazon Audible sales. I understand capitalism. I’m willing to buy an Audible version of books when available. The problem is, Text-to-Speech is crippled in this way even when there’s no Audible version available.

The best text-to-speech software is “Text Speaker”. This app reads aloud your files in human sounding voices. You can choose from different male and female voices to listen to your text. Give it a try.

There is a fix to this. Control panel>Voice recognition>Change text to voice configuration (Not exact since my Windows is in spanish)

You should try the “Text Speaker” app. It has so many natural sounding voices to chose from in multiple languages. I use it for my french class, most often I create mp3 files of my notes so I can listen to it on the go and practice my french pronunciation. It can even extract text from scanned pages and websites and read them out loud. Great product. https://www.deskshare.com/text-to-speech-software.aspx

My Kindle “Text to speech” for PC ONLY reads on the speakers. I don’t want to bother other people in the room. How do I set the computer for Kindle to send its text to speech to my Bluetooth EARBUDS? I have been battling with this for years, ever since I bought my first kindle book. More than a week ago, I opened a ticket with Amazon Customer Service and have not heard from Amazon. Thanks, Robb. Threes years later amazon kindle still hasn’t fixed the text to speech running in the background while you work in a different software or web browser. Screen recording and converting to an mp3 is a bit much especially when your a student who wants to type notes while they listen to the text book being read. Its pretty ridiculous.

I agree! I also need the ability to speed the speech up. I haven’t seen that as an option yet.

Even without audiobooks, the Kindle Paperwhite can still beat the competition

The new kindle paperwhite lacks the audio features of prior kindle e-readers, but it doesn't need them to beat the competition..

By Dante D'Orazio

Via LibraryCity

via cdn2.sbnation.com

Hidden by all of the improvements that Jeff Bezos extolled on stage yesterday about the new Kindle Paperwhite , Amazon has silently taken some features to the chopping block. The Kindle Paperwhite replaces the Kindle Touch before it, but it has lost the 3.5mm headphone jack and speakers of its predecessor. Clearly, without that hardware, the new Kindle e-reader is devoid of audio features — Amazon's once-highlighted "Read to Me" text-to-speech feature is gone, as is access to Audible's massive collection of audiobooks and the sometimes-useful MP3 playback option on the old Kindle. The Kindle Paperwhite solely consumes text, and its 2GB of onboard storage compared to its predecessor's 4GB makes that abundantly clear.

The Paperwhite is a text-only device

These features were once differentiators for Amazon in the e-reader space, but now that they're gone how does the Kindle Paperwhite compare with the competition? Since none of the leaders — the Nook Simple Touch with Glowlight , Sony Reader PRS-T2 , or Kobo Mini — have audio features, the Kindle now has one less selling point. Still, Amazon looks like it's won again when it comes to the most important features: screen and ecosystem. At this point in the e-reader war hardware is fairly standard across the board — all now have 2GB of storage (though only the Kindle and Kobo Mini aren't expandable), and processors, dimensions, and build quality don't separate these devices.

While it's not clear why Amazon has seen fit to remove audio features that made its e-reader stand out — perhaps it's looking to push multimedia users to the Kindle Fire family — there's no reason to believe this loss will alter Amazon's position in the e-reader space. That's no consolation to those who have heavily invested into Audible audiobooks, but ultimately, the features Amazon has added seem more important than the ones it has removed.

Compare this: Kindle Paperwhite, Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight, Sony Reader PRS-T2, Kobo Mini, and more.

Every Kindle Paper White Hack to Maximize Your Device

Your Kindle Paperwhite lets you carry a mini library inside your purse or pocket wherever you go but did you know that there’s a lot more you can do with it? While nothing can replace the feel of an actual physical book in your hand, there are so many advantages of having an eReader. With a Kindle device, for example, you don’t need to carry a dictionary to look up difficult words. The device has a dictionary of its own that you can access anytime. Sure, you can use your phone to access one, but it can be a source of distraction. That is just one of the perks of using a Kindle. Here, you will find out every hack that you can learn to maximize your Kindle Paperwhite.

This is not a guide to jailbreaking your Kindle. Rather, a great collection of tips and tricks so you can make the most out of your device and enhance your reading experience!

What is Kindle Paperwhite?

The most distinct feature of the Kindle Paperwhite compared to other eReaders is, as the name suggests, its paper-like display. It gives you the experience of reading an actual book instead of reading from a screen like a tablet or a computer. The Paperwhite edition has all the basic features of the previous Kindle devices but with an enhanced design and set of features.

A Kindle device is basically an eReader or eBook reader which lets you access a huge collection of books with the tap of a finger. The great thing about it is that you do not get the common distractions that keep popping up when you are reading eBooks from a mobile phone.

Check out this Amazon eReader model today and start reading eBooks now!

How Does It Compare With Other eReaders?

There are many alternative eReaders out there that work similarly to Kindle devices. What sets the Paperwhite apart is again, the quality of the reading experience you get. The fact that you won’t strain your eyes staring at pages and pages of content is a huge plus.

Kobo, one of its competitors, offers smaller storage space and it doesn’t have the same quality of display as the Paperwhite. The Nook, on the other hand, is quite popular despite its limits in terms of titles that you can get.

Another advantage of the Kindle Paperwhite, as well as other Kindle models, is that it offers plenty of features like free reading for Amazon Prime members and other discounted deals. Once in a while, you will find a number of Amazon Kindle books on sale. There are also other perks like book lending and family sharing.

How Is It Different From Older Models?

Kindle Paperwhite is water resistant

One of the latest enhancements on the Kindle Paperwhite is its water-resistant design. While it may not seem like a necessary feature, it does give you some benefits like being able to read at the poolside without worrying about it getting wet. Even so, you may still want to protect your device with a Kindle Paperwhite case. It is also a lot lighter and slimmer so you can bring it almost anywhere. You can even fly with it so you can read on the plane!

In terms of what’s been phased out, the Kindle Paperwhite as well as other newer models no longer have the buttons that were previously used to turn the pages. It has a touchscreen design so you can simply tap left or right to switch between pages or navigate through your settings.

Kindle Paperwhite Features

Here are the most interesting functionalities of the Paperwhite.

Paper-Like Display (No Blue Light)

Read glare-free from your Kindle

As mentioned several times, the Kindle Paperwhite does not emit blue light which is what you get when you read from a tablet, mobile phone, or computer screen. Blue light often strains the eyes. This Kindle model, however, features 300 pixels per inch (PPI), making it seem like you’re reading on actual printed paper. The screen is also glare-free, which allows you to read under the sun and still see everything clearly.

Thinnest and Lightest

The eBook reader measures only 0.3″ in width, making it one of the thinnest Kindle models you can find. It weighs only 6.4 oz so you can barely notice it in your bag, pocket, or purse.

Storage Capacity

There are two versions of the Kindle Paperwhite that you can choose from. One has 8 GB of storage and the other has 32 GB. Despite the massive storage difference, the 8 GB is plenty for your eBooks. Moreover, Amazon offers free cloud storage for all Kindle users so your eBooks will always be stored in the cloud even if you switch to another one or lose your device.

Water-Resistant

Feel free to relax and read by the beach, pool, or even your bathtub because this eBook reader is water-resistant. It has been professionally rated to withstand accidental immersions up to two meters for up to 60 minutes. A splash or two definitely wouldn’t hurt.

Adjustable Light

The Paperwhite features its own adjustable backlight so you no longer need a clip light or to turn on your night lamp to read in the dark. You can adjust the brightness to your comfort with a few taps.

Battery Life

Another great improvement with the Paperwhite is its battery life. Your Kindle will last weeks with a single charge under regular use.

You will also have the option to remove ads or book recommendations that pop up whenever you turn on your device just like in other Kindle models. You can get the ad-free version for only around $20.

How to Set up Your Kindle Paperwhite

When you first unbox your Kindle Paperwhite and remove all the plastic coverings, you will find that it has been pre-charged but not fully. You can charge it to full if you want but it’s not necessary. Here are the basic steps to get your Paperwhite up to speed.

Power On the Device

This new Kindle’s power button is located on the center-left on the bottom of the device. Press and hold the button and wait for your Paperwhite to light up. You will see the Kindle logo with the photo of a tree appear after a few seconds.

Follow the Setup Prompts

It will now prompt you to set up and personalize your device. First, select your language and then connect to your Wi-Fi network on the next setup page. Once you select your Wi-Fi, a virtual keyboard will appear so you can type your Wi-Fi password. Once you are connected, you can log in and link your Amazon account.

Assuming you purchased your new device with your existing Amazon account, all you have to do is type in your credentials. If your Kindle was a gift or you want to use a different account, you can create a new one. You will now have to register your Kindle Paperwhite as part of your Amazon devices.

If done successfully, you will now see a welcome message with your name on it. You can then proceed by tapping on Continue Setup.

Link Your Goodreads Account

Previously, Amazon allowed you to connect your social media networks like Facebook and Twitter so you can share highlighted passages and notes directly from your device. This feature has now been removed, but you can still connect your Goodreads account.

Why do this? Once you start reading a new book, your device will automatically mark it as Currently Reading in your Goodreads profile. You can turn off this feature whenever you want if you want to prevent others from seeing what you are reading. It will also automatically mark it as Read once you finish reading or get to the last page of the book.

Choose Your Offers

You will now see offers from Amazon for subscriptions for which you may want to sign up like Kindle Unlimited. You will learn more about Kindle Unlimited subscriptions in the latter part of this guide.

How to Buy Books for Your Kindle Device

Change your one-click settings to purchase ebooks

There is one thing you need to set up in order to purchase books and have them directly downloaded to your Kindle. First, you must set up your One-Click Settings. You would have to do this either on the Amazon website or the Amazon app on your account page.

On the Amazon website or your Amazon mobile app, click on the menu, and choose Your Account. From there, go to the second sub-menu called Account Settings and scroll down and tap or click on One-Click Settings. You will now see all the credit cards and other payment methods linked to your account. Scroll and choose the card that you want to use as the default for purchasing Kindle eBooks. Once done, you will see a green check that says Your Default.

How to buy eBooks from the Kindle store

You would have to purchase your eBooks directly from the Store page of your Kindle Paperwhite. Most of the time, if you try to purchase from the Amazon site or app, it will not give you the option to buy it. In some cases, you can do so by clicking or tapping on “Buy now with 1-click”. Access the Store by tapping on the cart icon on the top of the screen of your Kindle. This will be hidden if you are currently reading a book but you can force it to show up by gently tapping on the top of the screen. You can now start searching for titles.

When you tap on an eBook that you like, you can select the Buy button and after confirming that you want to buy the book, it will now be downloaded to your Kindle and will appear in your library in a few seconds.

Kindle Paperwhite Hacks: Tips and Tricks to Maximize Your eReader

Now, here is the fun part. Reading eBooks is fun in itself but being able to bookmark pages, take screenshots of what you’re reading, and highlight compelling paragraphs or sentences makes the experience even more enjoyable! You can also widen your vocabulary and so much more. Here are some of the most interesting hacks for your Kindle Paperwhite that you may not have known.

Maximize Your Vocabulary Builder

Use Kindle's vocabulary builder

Every time you come across a word that is new to you, you can highlight it by long-pressing the word. It will automatically show the dictionary and the definition of the word. You can swipe left or right on the popup and it will show you a Wikipedia page related to the word and a translation option where you can translate the word to other languages.

Learning and Mastering Words

Each word you highlight or lookup will be stored in your Vocabulary Builder within your device. Whichever page you are on, tap on the top of the screen and then tap on the upper-left icon. Tap on Vocabulary Builder from the dropdown.

Learning and Re-Reading Definitions

You will see three options on the top: Words, Books, and a dropdown labeled Learning. All the words that you have highlighted or looked up will be listed there and they will be listed by default under Learning. Click on any of those words anytime you want and it will show you its definition again.

Mastering Words

Use vocabulary builder to master words

If you feel like you have learned enough about the word or have mastered it, you can tap on Mastered on the lower-right of the pop-up. The word will then be moved to the Mastered list. You can access the words you have mastered by tapping on the Learning dropdown and selecting Mastered. It will now list all of the words you have mastered. Just the same, you can tap on them at any time and see their definitions again.

By utilizing the two features above, you can learn a lot of new words and master them. You might just be a wordsmith in no time!

Get the Most of Your Notes and Highlights

Almost all habitual readers and booklovers find that once in a while, they will resonate with a specific passage in the book. It could also be that they were fascinated with a particular sentence or find some paragraphs meaningful. You can highlight those passages by long pressing on the first word and then dragging your finger to the end of the sentence/s or paragraph/s.

Once you have highlighted something, Kindle will give you the option to add a note about that highlight or just leave it as a highlight. Either way, your highlights will be stored in one place just like your Vocabulary Builder.

Accessing Your Highlights and Notes

To access your notes and highlights, tap on the Home icon which will show you your library of all the books you have downloaded. If it’s not on the first page, simply swipe left or right and look for the book that says Your Clippings. It will have a scissor icon on it.

Once you tap on it, it will list all the highlights including the notes you have added to them and they will be listed in order of oldest to newest. If you are like many readers, it is highly likely that you have highlighted plenty of passages so finding a particular highlight may be difficult. If you are having trouble finding a specific highlight, gently tap on the top of the screen again and type a word or several words on the search bar. Kindle will then look for that particular passage within your highlights or clippings.

Use X-Ray to Examine Every Detail in Your eBook

Use x-ray to explore your eBook

You may be wondering why this feature was called X-Ray, and the reason behind it is mind-blowing, to say the least! Like an actual x-ray, this feature allows you to see the skeleton or the bones of your eBook. What does this mean?

Once you tap on X-Ray by, again, tapping on the upper-right menu, you will see several options that will let you explore the book in-depth. What are those?

Notable Clips

Under this sub-menu, your Kindle Paperwhite will show you passages that other readers have found meaningful. You can swipe left or right to see several highlights that others have made as well as passages that Amazon Kindle’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) has deemed important.

The next sub-menu is the People page. From here, you can see people or characters (if you’re reading fiction) with notable quotes that they have said. You will also see the number of how many times those people, characters, or names have appeared in the book. This is a great tool when you want to compile a list of quotes from a favorite character in your book.

Another tool or sub-menu is the Terms page. Here, you can find important words or words that have significant relevance in the book in general or certain topics or chapters. Kindle will show you not just the definitions but also some additional information about those terms. If you tap on that particular term, your device will take you to that passage or chapter where the word was used. You can also see All Mentions which lists all the places in the book where that specific term was mentioned.

Under images, you can see all the photos that were included in the eBook. If there are none, you will usually only find the book cover.

Adjust Your Preferences to Read More Comfortably

Adjust your Kindle’s font settings

Not only can you choose the type and size of the font you want in the book, but you can also choose the theme and layout of the display. You can set your display to either large or compact which is very helpful for those with vision problems. For the layout, you can choose whether to read the normal way or change the orientation from portrait to landscape.

To access these settings, gently tap again on the top of the screen and select the icon on the upper-left on the second layer that has the Aa icon on it. From there, you can also choose what you want your Kindle Paperwhite to display as you are reading. Here are some of the things you can customize.

Popular Highlights

You can tell your Kindle to show you popular highlights from people who have read the book as you are reading. That means that you will see their highlighted passages and it’s up to you if you want to highlight them yourself as well.

Kindle can automatically suggest that you look up definitions for words that are unfamiliar to many people and it will show a hint of what that word means as you are reading.

Show the Clock While Reading

Change your Kindle’s display settings

Under the same options page, you can choose whether or not you want the screen to display the time as you are reading. Some people find this distracting and others find it helpful because they may have something important that they need to do at a certain time.

Display Your Reading Progress

You can also choose whether or not you want the screen to show where you are in the book and how much time is left to finish it. It can show the percentage of your reading progress or the page of the book you are reading. You can also view the time left to finish the book or chapter.

Take Screenshots from Your Kindle Device

Take screenshots from your Kindle

This feature is surprising even to Kindle Paperwhite owners that have been using their eReaders for a long time, sometimes even years. Who would’ve known you can take a screenshot from a simple eBook reader? The process is simple but accessing the screenshots you’ve taken maybe a little tricky but here’s how.

Whichever page or screen you are on, tap on the upper-right and lower-left corner simultaneously. If you see a flash, that means you have successfully taken a screenshot of the page you’re in.

Accessing Your Screenshots

You will not find your screenshots within your Kindle device as it will not be in your device’s library. To see them, you will have to connect your Kindle Paperwhite to your computer using a USB cable. It can be any USB cable that is compatible with Android devices. Your Kindle device will show up on your files list. Click on that and you will see Screenshots among your downloaded content.

Use Your Kindle Paperwhite with Audible

Whether you want to listen with your Alexa speaker or on your Audible app on your mobile device, you can listen to your eBook using Audible. However, you must purchase the Audible version of the book as well. Usually, there is a discounted deal when you purchase both the eBooks and their paired Kindle audiobooks. This is especially true to those included in the top Kindle books and best books lists on Audible.

Let Alexa Read Your Kindle eBooks Aloud

As mentioned, you must have the Audible version of the book for Alexa to read your eBooks out loud. Simply say, “Alexa, read…” and then say the title of the book. Your Alexa speaker or device will search your library for that particular book and start reading it for you. You will not hear Alexa’s voice. Instead, taking its place will be the voice actor who was hired to read the book on Audible.

Find out here if Alexa is always listening .

Lend or Borrow eBooks from Friends

Access your Kindle device from Amazon

Amazon Kindle has a feature that lets you lend eBooks from your library to friends. You will have to do this from your desktop browser. Log in to Amazon and navigate to your Electronic Purchases then select Kindle from the list. You will now see your purchased content. Take note that this list will not show personal documents that you have uploaded to your Kindle Paperwhite. You can learn more about uploading PDFs and other files to your Kindle below.

Once you are on the eBooks list page, click on the menu icon beside the book that you want to lend, and select Loan this Title from the dropdown. Enter your friend’s email address that they used to register their Kindle. Your friend will have access to the book they borrowed for up to 14 days. While the title is on loan with your friend, you are unable to read the book from your device. Likewise, your friends can do the same to lend you their Kindle eBooks.

Borrow Books from Libraries

While the entire Amazon Kindle system is a private service, public and school libraries still allow you to borrow eBooks from them and read them directly from your Kindle Paperwhite. You would have to do this through a system called Overdrive which is very popular with students. You don’t have to be a student to borrow books but you would need a library card from any public or school library. If you are a student, however, all you need is your student ID.

Head to the Overdrive official website and enter your library card or student ID information to start borrowing eBooks!

Link Goodreads to Get More Accurate Book Recommendations

Not only will linking your Goodreads profile with your Amazon Kindle account update your friends of what you’re reading, but it will also allow Kindle to provide you with better book recommendations. Based on what’s been marked as Read, Reading, and what’s been included on your Wish List, Amazon will recommend books similar to those titles. Sometimes, it will recommend titles from the same authors you like. Of course, there are also recommendations from Amazon Kindle bestsellers .

Achieve Your Reading Goals

Linking your Goodreads account is also a great way to motivate yourself to achieve your reading goals. Goodreads has a feature where you can update your reading progress which, as mentioned above, can be found on your display settings. Imagine seeing that you are almost 100% done reading a book. It’s a great way to motivate yourself to read the rest of the pages! No matter what reading goal you’ve set on Goodreads for the year, this feature is a great tool to achieve it.

Read Personal Documents on Your Kindle Paperwhite

Edit your Kindle email to read personal documents

Your Kindle Paperwhite allows you to upload documents on your Kindle account so you can read them directly from your eReader. All Kindle devices are compatible with a large number of file types including PDF, Docx, and ePub.

All you have to do is email the document to your Kindle email address. Yes, Amazon has assigned you an email for your Kindle account. This email address is usually long and difficult to remember but you can modify it and personalize it to your liking. To do this, go to your Amazon account on your desktop browser and navigate to your Content and Devices under the dropdown menu of your Accounts and Lists.

Click on your Kindle device and from there, click on Edit beside the email address that’s been assigned for you. You can now enter a username. The email address will always end with “@kindle.com”. Anytime you want to upload a document to your Paperwhite, simply email it to your Kindle email address. It will appear in your library in a minute or two.

Organize Your Book Collections

Personalize your book collections

Your Kindle Paperwhite allows you to create customized Collections to organize your eBooks. Tap on the Home icon then the icon on the upper-right corner and scroll to the bottom. You will see Create New Collection on the dropdown. Tap on it and give your collection a name. To start adding books to your personalized collections, navigate to your library. Tap on the small icon on the lower-right of any book cover then select the first option—Add To Collection. You can access your collections anytime using the Filter in your library.

Link Your Kindle Device with the Kindle Mobile App

Download Kindle from Play Store or App Store

The Kindle App is available on Mac, Android, and iPhone. Go to the App Store or Play Store and type Kindle on the search bar then download the app and log in. The app will then automatically sync your content as well as your progress in the books you are reading. It syncs your bookmarks, notes, and highlights as well!

Tips When Flying With Your Kindle

eBook readers are allowed on the plane in both checked and carry-on luggage. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) considers Kindle devices as part of the electronic tablets category in their items list. If you’re flying with your Kindle Paperwhite, it’s good to know TSA’s regulations to avoid unnecessary inconvenience upon passing through security. According to TSA rules, any electronic device larger than a cellphone using lithium-ion batteries must be separated into a different basket for screening. These will go with your laptops and tablets if they are in your carry-on. These items include eReaders. Make sure that you can easily take out your Kindle before you pass through security. No further action is needed if you packed your Paperwhites in your checked luggage.

Should You Subscribe to Kindle Unlimited?

Subscribe to Kindle Unlimited

Kindle Unlimited is a subscription service that lets you read books for free. However, not all titles are eligible for free reading. Still, there are plenty of eBooks out there in any genre that you can enjoy with a Kindle Unlimited subscription that comes at around $9 per month.

Whether you should subscribe to this plan or not depends on how much you read and how much you can maximize it. Do you read more than ten books per month? The average cost of most eBooks is around the same price ($9 – $10) so if you can only read one or two books per month, it may not be necessary. If you do read a lot, say, five or more books per month, you can save more money in the long run with a Kindle Unlimited subscription. You can do a 30-day free trial to see if you can maximize it.

There are endless possibilities of what you can do with your Kindle Paperwhite. You just have to know how to explore its different features. Hopefully, this guide has helped you unlock many of its potential. Not only are Kindle Paperwhites a great tool for learning, but they’re also a great source of fun and entertainment!

Amazon kills text-to-speech with new Kindle Paperwhite

kindle paperwhite text to speech hack

For the last few years Amazon has been been offering a text-to-speech option in some Kindle eReaders. This lets you listen to books by plugging in a set of headphones or by using the speakers in a Kindle Keyboard or Kindle Touch.

What’s cool is that this works with almost any eBook because the Kindle software converts text to speech. You don’t need to pay extra for an audiobook.

But Amazon’s newest Kindle eReaders don’t support text-to-speech .

Amazon Kindle text-to-speech

In fact, the new Amazon Kindle Paperwhite doesn’t even have a speaker or headphone jack. So you won’t be able to listen to MP3s either. That’s a feature some older Kindle models supported.

To be fair, both text-to-speech and MP3 playback were always described as “experimental” features, which suggested two things: They might still be buggy, and Amazon could kill the features at any time.

Text-to-speech also isn’t all that great on older Kindles. Instead of listening to a voice actor performing a dramatic reading of a book with, you get a digital voice that mispronounces words, struggles to pause correctly at punctuation marks, and mangles proper nouns.

But since I picked up a Kindle Touch 10 months ago, I’ve found myself using the feature more often than I would have expected. It lets you “read” a book when you’re in a situation where it might otherwise be difficult. For instance, when you’re bobbing up and down on an exercise machine, or when you’re riding a bus (if, like me, you get motion sick when trying to read a book on a bus).

Text-to-speech also allows people with visual impairments listen to books that don’t have an official audiobook version, including many out of print titles or independent releases .

While many Kindle readers won’t miss this feature, it was one of the things that helped set Amazon’s eReaders apart from the competition.

I guess Amazon is counting on the new paperwhite screen, higher resolution display, and glow light to do that now.

Pity! The Touch I have here (first Touch) reads almost well. It just does weird things when it really should be VERY easy to know what to do -such as not pausing after end of quotation, or end of sentence. Sometimes it repeats itself, and stumbles. All signs of some minor bugs that only needed ironing out. Any half decent programmer should be able to dig into the code and correct just those annoying things. Sometimes the unexpected intonations sound just like John Malkovich!

Sadly I bought the Paperwhite without realizing it didn’t have text to speech. I did have the keyboard Kindle and I stored all my audible books on it and listened when I couldn’t read. Now I can’t listen to my audible books on my kindle. Had I know…

I use both text to speech and Audible for listening to books, which is my primary method of consumption since I can do it during the workday. I think this was a poor decision on Amazon’s part.

I am disappointed that text to speech is missing on the paperwhite,if I had knowen I would not have purchased it .To be fair Kindle should have mentioned it when selling the Paperwhite

Did old Kindle´s text to speed supported other languages (in particular, brazilian portuguese)?? My grandmother (95 yo) has visual impairment, which is a shame since she always loved to read. I want to find her a way to listen to books. If old Kindle´s support text to speech, I would go with them, otherwise an Android tablet would be an option, since they have several TTS apps.

I suspect why Amazon would kill the Text-To-Speech feature: let’s say I buy ANY book from Amazon in kindle format for let’s say, $12 (which is a lot of money already for a text file, but don’t get me started). There is a 95% chance of having included Text-To-Speech. “So what” if it sounds like your Roomba robot is reading to you? It’s cheaper than an Audiobook. With the added advantage that I can read what’s on the screen if I don’t understand. The problem is….. Amazon cannot compete with itself. It has Audible Audiobooks to sell. They’re more expensive, they’re bulky audio files, but sound better because someone got paid to read it. Probably it comes down to a hard business decision. Hopefully someone discovers that a machine reading text to you is the future of interactivity.

I hope so because I can not stand the overdramatic reading on an audiobook

Do you really believe that the fact somebody was paid for reading the book justifies the difference in the price? 🙂

I was about to purchase a paperwhite today and when i realized there was no text to speech, that feature alone, completed caused me to cancel my order. Bring it back Amazon!!!

I used text-to-speech often to help me concentrate better on the book while I read… especially, as you mentioned, while on treadmill – I liked that it turned the pages for you so you don’t have to as you ran, too – man, am I gonna miss that feature.

I so wanted to buy paperwhite, but hell no, I rather keep my awesome kindle touch because it reads to me when i can’t

i have the 2nd gen kindle i think and i love the TTS function. The only reason i was looking at the new one is because the earphone jack is acting up. I wonder if amazon will change their minds about it..now i don’t know if i should buy 1 generation back just for the TTS…

Without text to speech the new Kindle will be worthless. I won’t be buying one.

The Kindle Fire Series (with a colour backlit display) all feature excellent text to speech, just make sure you purchase one optimised for the UK, US or Australian market as appropriate to you and its also on the older A4 sized Kindle DX. This is one reason to purchas a Fire Tablet rather than Android. (Fire is essentially Amazon’s heavily modified Android but only Fire has TTS)

I assume that on the paperwhite versions Amazon decided to save a few tens of dollars or pounds by eliminating all audio (both the speekers and audio jack socket have been engineered out) to get the cheepest possible e-reader out to the masses. A late model 7 inch kindle fire has an excellent screen and is not too expensive though its backlit screen is usable in sunlight e-ink is better by far and one then has the hassle of recharging the battery every second day under heavy reading.

Some say Amazon did this to avoid conflicting with its Audible buisiness of professionally read books. This can’t be true as the paperwhite e-ink readers have no audio at all and amazon can disable TTS on specific e-books as required by the copyright owner. It simply needs to get its basic e-reader out to the public as cheap as possible.

The iPad can do Kindle text to speech by turning on the “voice over” option in the accessibillity section in settings. It’s an excellent voice (Siri) though as it’s designed for blind people so its a little awkward since you must now tap to select each menu item and then double tap to confirm but I got used to it.

The the solution is simple buy a kindle fire to replace or supliment your e-ink kindle or use the iPad/iPhone voice over or just buy the audible version.

Since I love to use my kindle on the beach both purchasing, reading and then swiching to TTS as I sunbake I’m hanging on to my old Kindle Keyboard 3G whose older non paperwhite display is at no disadvantage in that bright setting. There is no problem running 6 Kindle devices.

I love the the text-to-speech and that feature is why I have not updated to a newer Kindle. I also like to continue my housework or to listen while driving.

The tts feature was the deciding point in purchasing my original kindle and the reason I’ve kept purchasing kindle products over other readers. I am very disappointed.

What a disappointment. I’ve been following the news about the new Kindle ever since it was first announced, and it has looked perfect up until now.

I’m one of the ones who DOES use the voice feature, frequently. It’s great to be able to read a bit, and pick up where you left off on the drive to/from work.

I still may get one, but this feature is a big one that I just loved.

I will not buy another amazon device that does not have text to speech. I really love my kindle and just sold my kindle fire last week to buy the new tablet. If they don’t support TTS I will get Nexus if it offers TTS.

If it weren’t for my Kindle’s text-to-speech feature I wouldn’t get to read at all. I use it during my work commute, while doing household chores, yard work, etc. While it’s not exactly like listening to an audiobook, it certainly fills the void — and the Kindle books are MUCH cheaper than audiobooks. I was interested in the new Paperwhite until I found out it has no TTS … think I’ll stick with my keyboard model.

Removal of this feature may force people who count on it to Windows tablets, where one can install third party text to speech (TTS) voices and software.

The advantage here is that the voices, such as Ivona’s, are much better than the awful Nuance voices (the 800 lb gorilla in the TTS voice arena). The TTS software can also be very good, as in NextUp’s TextAloud, which can also convert the computer generated spoken text in mp3 files.

Unfortunately, some ebook management/reader software do not work with TTS.

There is a role for government here, to mandate that ebook reader software work with TTS software, if industry doesn’t police itself, to comply with the Americans with Disabilities (ADA) Act.

As America ages and its collective eyesight degrades, the market for TTS can only grow.

Ebooks with dialog in them can be tagged such that, if you have multiple voices installed on your computer, different voices can be used, one for each character, similar to the way different instruments play on MIDI.

One of the problems with single voice TTS is that you sometimes don’t know which character is speaking.

I can understand Amazon narrowing the focus here to a pure-play paper book replacement device. After all, real books don’t have speakers or read to you either, and that is the product they are apparently aiming to make obsolete here.

I am disappointed in the loss. My mom uses it all the time and it is the only reason she still uses her Kindle with Keyboard. She prefers her fire, but she uses the text to speech.

I wonder how much the problems with the disabled community have influenced this. Amazon was sued and had some pretty strong reports against them because the text to speech was not good enough for many disability rights organizations. So I suspect that they may have just gotten rid of it instead of improving it to meet their standards. (That and because it was a way to shrink the device and eliminate some cost.)

What about the more recent Vox KOBO models…do any of these support this feature?

I use TTS for their morning and evening commute 10 Hours a week. My wife got me the Kindle for Christmas a few years back and its on the fritz TTS is not working and the pic screens (not text screen) is all messed up. dose the Kindle Fire have Test to speech? How about the Nook, i-Pad?

Does the new paperwhite have text to speech?

Really bummed that the new paperwhite is still the same form factor. I had one before but now I use my iPad to read instead. I found the 7 inch screen uncomfortably small. I can’t justify the price difference of the oasis 2 just for 1 inch in screen size.

Would anyone know if this has text to speech function ? Not audible integration but the dictation feature that the kindle fires have.

Text to Speech was just for books, not for Accessibility. btw, most of the posts stating that Text to Speech wasn't on current models were made 6 years ago and were true back then and we did mention the audio adapter on the 2015 Paperwhite. Text to Speech = 2009 (possibly 2007) -> 2011 except for the Basic Kindle and the Kindles had speakers.

The the text to speech on Kindle is a bit shit honestly. And good narrators add so much more to a book reading.
