The first thing that you need to figure out is where to stay when  planning your fantastic tropical vacation . There are many options for Hawaii military cabins, resorts, hotels, and vacation rentals.

1.  Hale Koa

The Hale Koa Hotel is located on the beach in Waikiki and is the Shades of Green military resort Hawaii. This Hawaii military hotel has discounted rates for active duty, retired, surviving family members, and all other veterans of the armed forces.

2.  Bellows Air Force Station Cottages, Condos, and Camping

One of the best options for lodging, and is not known to many people outside of Hawaii, is Bellows Air Force Station’s cabins and camping options. They offer the best military cabins Oahu has to offer.

They are located right on the beach. The military cabin rentals in Oahu and camping are SUPER affordable and very spacious. The beach is just awesome. The best part is that you have your own private area.

Plus, the amenities on the base include a mini store, a putt-putt golf course, a small restaurant, a brewhouse, and beach equipment rentals. Everything that you need, plus the surrounding beauty. It is a central location so you can enjoy all the beautiful island has to offer.

3.  Cabanas at Kaneohe Bay

Kaneohe Bay  is an absolutely stunning area with plenty of activities to engage in.

The military family is very lucky to be able to rent stunning vacation rental homes right on the Marine Corps base at Kay Bay!! There is camping, a military resort Oahu, and beach cottages available as well.

Just as the Air Force Base above, be sure to book far enough in advance. These rentals are very affordable, on the beach, and they book up quickly!! Don’t let these deals slip through your fingers!!

There are a few other military hotels in Honolulu located here too, including the Fairway Inn, Five Palms, and Inn of the Corps.

4. Navy Lodge

The Navy Lodge is located in Pearl Harbor and is another great choice for a military discount Hawaii vacation.

Best Things to do on Oahu for Military Families

Now that you know where to stay and you are settled in, it is time to fill in your days.

Wait?!! You don’t want to spend every moment at the beach? Ok. There are plenty of things to do and see on this very small island of Oahu.

1. U.S.S. Arizona Memorial

You may have already been planning on visiting the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial. It is definitely a Hawaii must-do.

This is why Pearl Harbor is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Hawaii. There is bound to be a line. Plan to get there early. This is especially important when visiting  Pearl Harbor with kids .

If you get there before 0700, 1300 free tickets are given away daily, and you are likely to get one.

Or, if you go  HERE , you can book your tour up to two months in advance for a small contribution. There are also plenty of  private Pearl Harbor tours  worth booking.

2.  Polynesian Cultural Center

The  Polynesian Cultural Center  is an immersive experience where you get to tour and learn about the Polynesian cultures.

You will get to see six different villages, an erupting volcano, a lagoon, and a waterfall. You will also get to sample food, sing, dance, and play. This is one of the  best things to do in Oahu  with kids and teens.

Military discounted tickets are available at all ITT offices on the island . There is even a luau at the end of the day should you choose to participate.

4.  Honolulu Zoo

The  Honolulu Zoo  located right off of Waikiki Beach is spectacular. They have tons of animals, a beautiful park, a play area for the kids, a petting zoo, a shopping area, and places to eat. It is a nice area to stroll through with the family.

They offer a lot of educational opportunities as you walk through the many paths and visit the different animals.

5.  Atlantis Submarine

Have you ever wanted to tour the beautiful crystal clear waters of Hawaii and see the wildlife and coral reefs?

Atlantis offers just that opportunity with its unique submarine tour. It is an environmentally safe option to see sharks, sea turtles, stingrays, and more.

They offer a military discount , so spend the day learning and visiting the sea creatures!!

6. Visit Waterfalls

Hike the Waimea Valley and see one of the beautiful  waterfalls on Oahu . Wear the correct shoes. It can get muddy. The reason everything is so lush and green is because of the lovely rain the area receives.

If you are on Kauai, you will love seeing Opaekaa Falls or Wailua Falls. There are tons of Kauai waterfalls to enjoy, especially because of all the rain.

Bellows Beach

If you’re looking for an amazing beach, Bellows Beach is located on Bellows Air Force Base. It is a popular beach but is far less crowded than the beaches of Waikiki.

It is gorgeous and the perfect place to spend a relaxing day basking in the sun. 

Hickam Beach

Hickam Beach is located on Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickam. It is less crowded than many of the Oahu beaches and it is absolutely beautiful.

It is not too rocky on your feet and there is not a large undertow. This is great for the kiddos that want to get out and play.

It also makes it a fantastic place to learn how to stand up paddle board if you have never tried it. The beach has a shack that rents out equipment for a fair price. 

Haleiwa  is a town, not an activity as you may have guessed. It is a super cute  North Shore  town in Oahu that makes for the perfect day trip. There are tons of cute little shops, eateries, and beach areas. Everything there is super  Instagrammable .

Shave Ice(don’t add the D) at Matsumoto’s

This is a must while visiting Haleiwa. Stop in and have some shave ice . You won’t regret it.  Matsumoto’s  has been a favorite in Hawaii since the 1950’s.

Cafe Haleiwa

Cafe Haleiwa  is the best place to stop and eat if you get hungry on your trip. It is family-owned. All of the food is made-to-order, fresh, and organic. Check it out if you get the chance.

And….Don’t forget to take your pic by the famous Haleiwa sign!!

9. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

If you are staying on the Big Island, you will love exploring the Volcanoes National Park in Hawaii.

It is such a fun place to explore, especially if you want to see some lava!

10.  Snorkeling

For a military stay in Hawaii, you have to go snorkeling! There are plenty of beaches you can visit and snorkel at for free or cheap if you need to rent some gear.

Or, you can go on plenty of snorkeling tours where a boat takes you to some top snorkeling locations all over the islands.

Molokini Crater is one of the best snorkeling spots on Maui .

If you are on the Big Island, you will love going on a snorkel manta ray tour .

You can go snorkeling on Oahu at Shark’s Cove or at Hanauma Bay.

You will find plenty of snorkeling locations on Kauai as well!

1. Hawaii Rental Car Discounts

2. Commissary

There are several commissaries on the island of Oahu.

If you have a hotel room or cottage with a partial kitchen area, a great way to save money is to purchase some of your food. Eat breakfast in the morning before you leave, pack a lunch to take with you, and bring something to drink for the day.

Purchase your  sunscreen  at the commissary instead of the ABC store in a popular tourist area.

Think smart, plan ahead, and you will be sure to save more of your hard-earned money on your Hawaii trip. 

If you  rented a car  for your vacation, make sure to purchase your gas from a military location or from Costco if you have a membership.

This will surely save you lots of money. 

4.  ITT

When you are making your plans for the events listed above, be sure to check  ITT  to see if you can purchase discounted tickets.

There are   ITT locations  on every base and at the Pearl Harbor NEX Mall.

Things To Know When Visiting Hawaii

1.  weather.

In general, the summers in Hawaii are fairly hot and dry and the winters are humid and a bit lower but still warm. There may be a slight breeze in the evening. You would be smart to bring a light sweatshirt.

Frequent rain is the norm and should be expected. It is how the island stays so green and tropical.

2.  Reef-Safe Sunscreen

It may not feel as if the sun is burning your skin. Don’t be fooled. You will see tourists walking around who thought this very thing and they will look just like that lobster you had for dinner last night.

Please remember to keep applying sunscreen regularly. It is your skin and it is important.

3. Hawaii Etiquette

People in Hawaii are very friendly. Be respectful and kind to all. Take your shoes off if you find yourself entering someone’s home. Call the locals “locals.” Not all people who live in Hawaii are Hawaiian. Use the terms Aloha and Mahalo.

Be careful how you use the terms “the States” and “American.” Remember Hawaii is a state and the locals of Hawaii are Americans. This may seem dumb, but, several people have messed up those statements and it is very offensive.

Just respect the land and the culture, take pictures, and have fun!!

4. Swimming in Hawaii

The undertow is strong on certain beaches on Oahu. The waves may not look huge, be very careful.

Listen to the locals. Don’t jump in with your boogie board on Sunset Beach when a local tells you otherwise!! It is probably not safe!!

There are tons of Oahu hotels with military discounts. Some of the most popular include the  Kahala Hotel ,  Shoreline Hotel Waikiki ,  Hilton Waikiki Beach ,  ‘ Alohilani Resort , and the  Moana Surfrider . And Hale Koa  is one of the best military places to stay in Hawaii.

YES!  Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa  offers some pretty hefty military discounts (up to 40% off!) To get Aulani military discounts, just show your valid military ID and make sure the active military member is listed on your reservation.

Not for visiting the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial. But, active duty members are allowed to drive onto Ford Island to see the U.S.S. Utah Memorial (which isn’t on any tours.) And the U.S.S. Bowfin Submarine will give you a $4 discount for active military. And there are several  Pearl Harbor tours  that offer military discounts.

Each military lodging in Hawaii will have its own requirements, but typically, active duty, employees, army retirees, and their immediate family members are allowed in Hawaii military lodging. Other Hawaii military resorts might have other requirements too. It is just best to reach out to each military hotel in Hawaii to verify beforehand.

There are a few military hotels in Hawaii, but the most popular one is the Hale Koa Hotel. It is the best military hotel in Honolulu.

If you are a member of Active Duty, Reserve and National Guard, Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Space Force, Coast Guard, and Cadets of Armed Forces Academies, you are eligible to stay at Hale Koa Resort Hawaii.

These days, money is tight in the islands because tourism traffic has dropped considerably….good deals abound and in most cases, all you have to do is ask.

Oahu Lodging for Service Families

Waikiki —  The big kahuna is the Hale Koa Hotel , right on Waikiki Beach in Honolulu.  Since 1975 it has been  “a first class hotel and recreation facility at affordable prices for military members and their families.”  I stayed there with my family a few years back and found excellent amenities (a small PX in the lobby, self-service laundry facilities, nice pools and here’s a military Mom’s blog post about the Hale Koa Luau ) plus a convenient location downtown.  Reserve as far in advance as you can (up to a year) on their Web site or by calling 800-367-6027 (in CONUS) or 808-955-0555 in Hawaii.

Other Oahu military hotels and lodging (for access to these you’ll probably want a rental car….)

Close To Or On The Beach

***   The Pililaau Army Recreation Center (PARC) on the usually-always-sunny Waianae, or Leeward, coast, has beachfront cabins, an equipment rental facility and a small shopette.

***  Also towards the Leeward side are the MWR Barbers Point Beach Cottages – be prepared, a lot of the amplifying info (eligibility, application, etc.) is on clunky PDFs.

***  Some of the very nicest Hawaii getaway places are on the Windward side at the Bellows Air Force Station beach cabins ; they are wildly popular and fill up very quickly, but the Waimanalo Bay setting is lovely. Camping is available, too.

***  At the Marine Corps base Kaneohe Bay, you’ll find the Lodge at Kaneohe Bay and some beachfront cottages (close to breeding grounds for monk seals and sea turtles.)

Inland Oahu

***  Near the Arizona Memorial and other Pearl Harbor tourist attractions, the Pearl Harbor Navy Lodge is worth a try; it is close to a massive Navy exchange and commissary (buy your macadamias/gifts there instead of out in town, and ship them home from the base post office!)

***  I am appalled at the apparent lack of a decent Web site for the Royal Alaka’i at Hickam Air Force Base , but Hickam is very roughly in the same area as Pearl Harbor and the rates look cheaper than the Navy Lodge.

***  Tripler Lodging fills with people who have family (or appointments themselves) at nearby Tripler Medical Center, but they might have space-available rooms.

***  The Inn at Schofield Barracks is pretty far inland; rather than use their rather primitive online reservation system, I’d pick up the phone and call instead.

Big Island Lodging for Service Families

***   Kilauea Military Camp — this is a Joint Service Recreation Center that is located in a mountainous (often quite cool) setting right inside in the Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island. You can’t beat that for being in the center of the action!  There are ninety one-, two- and three-bedroom cottages and apartments, restaurants, a Recreation Lodge and even golf. Arrange to fly into the Hilo airport; it’s much closer to Kilauea than the Kona airport on the other side of the island.

Kauai Lodging for Service Families

***  Barking Sands Beach Cottages on Kauai (at the Pacific Missile Range Facility or PMRF)  —  If you and the family want to get away from it all like Robinson Crusoe on the sunny western side of the island, this is the place.  There are 12 oceanfront cottages and 6 set back a bit with “ocean view,” plus a small restaurant, shopette and tours/recreation center.

Although it is a beautiful beach and pristine area, it is a long drive to much of anywhere, so you may wish to spend a few days at Barking Sands simply unwinding (and maybe hiking Waimea Canyon ) then shift to another part of the island for more access to restaurants and activities.

Guide to Hawaii Military Resorts and Recreational Lodging

Whether you’re traveling solo, as a couple, or with the entire family, Hawaii is the perfect destination for a military vacation! With so many Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) lodging options to choose from, you’re sure to find one that is right for you.

Looking for a luxury resort in Waikiki? The Hale Koa Hotel fits the bill. How about beachfront cabins? Try Barber’s Point or Pililaau. Is rustic camping more your style? Check out the family campgrounds at Bellows Air Force Station. And if you’re looking for unique access to one of Hawaii’s top National Parks, book your stay at Kilauea Military Camp!

Those are just a few examples of the incredible military resorts in Hawaii. You can find facilities all over Oahu and on Kauai and the Big Island. (There is no military lodging in Maui or the other islands).

Hale Koa Hotel (Oahu)

The Hale Koa , one of four Armed Forces Recreation Centers (AFRCs), is the most well-known military hotel in Hawaii. It is also the only military hotel on Waikiki Beach. The Hale Koa’s prime location gives you easy access to Oahu’s iconic beach as well as the many shops and restaurants in the Waikiki area.

The Hale Koa is a full-scale military resort that easily rivals neighboring civilian hotels in terms of location and amenities. The spectacular pool complex was renovated in 2019 and includes two large pools. The main pool, which overlooks the beach, has a water slide, a play pirate ship, fountains, and many other kid-friendly features. The adults-only pool is set in a peaceful garden-like atmosphere surrounded by palm trees.

A range of dining options include multiple full-scale restaurants, a coffee shop, several quick and casual eateries, and the famous Barefoot Bar, which is the perfect spot to enjoy an evening Mai Tai.

Other amenities at the Hale Koa include a day spa, beach rental equipment, a fitness center, and numerous on-site activities organized by the hotel. The Hale Koa’s tour desk will help you find the best things to do in Honolulu and plan your visit to the many tours and attractions all over Oahu.

Bellows Air Force Station (Oahu)

Bellows is an Air Force resort located along a beautiful stretch of Waimanalo Beach on Oahu’s eastern (windward) side. The facility offers a range of lodging options to suit every budget and travel style, including 100+ beachfront cabins, 16 condo units, 10 camper cabins, and more than 50 campsites.

Bellows’ beach cabins are furnished and have fully-equipped kitchens. They can accommodate up to four guests. The Nā Mokulua condo units, each with two bedrooms, are also fully furnished and can comfortably sleep four adults. The cabins and condos all have WiFi.

The more rustic Cedar Camper Cabins are located in a wooded area. They have no electricity, kitchen, or bathroom but are convenient to the nearby bathhouse. Each cabin has one queen bed and one set of twin bunkbeds. If you prefer tent camping, Bellows offers three different family campsite areas along with a group campsite.

The Turtle Cove Shoppe is the central location for all recreation at Bellows. They rent a range of sports and beach equipment as well as anything you might need for camping. Other activities offered through Turtle Cove include kayaking tours, yoga, golf, horseback riding, and various ocean sport lessons. At Turtle Cove, you can also purchase discounted tickets to local attractions.

Marine Corps Base Hawaii Lodging (Oahu)

Further north along the windward side of Oahu is Marine Corps Base Hawaii (MCBH) on Kaneohe Bay. MCBH has several recreational lodging options located throughout the base. Details, pricing, and reservation information for all facilities are on the MCBH lodging website .

While staying at MCBH, enjoy all of the MWR facilities on the base, including the Marina, Outdoor Recreation & Equipment Center, swimming pools, and the Kaneohe Klipper golf course, ranked among the top military golf courses!

The Beach Cottages at Kaneohe Bay

These two-bedroom cottages, all of which are furnished and have a full kitchen plus dining and living area, feature private decks with BBQ grills and views of Kaneohe Bay. The cottages also have air conditioning, WiFi and daily housekeeping service.

The Cabanas at Kaneohe Bay

The Cabanas are located directly on the water and feature 29 individual rooms, each with a king or two queen beds, a small living area, sink and mini-fridge. Guests use on-site community restrooms that have bathroom and shower stalls. Described as “upscale camping” on the MCBH website, the Cabanas also offer WiFi, air conditioning, and daily housekeeping service.

Klipper Villas

These two, three, and four-bedroom units are located right next to the famous Kaneohe Klipper golf course. All have a full kitchen, washer/dryer, and WiFi.

In addition to these recreational facilities, MCBH also has regular military lodging at Inns of the Corps and Fairway Inn. Information about both facilities is available on the MCBH lodging website .

Barber’s Point Beach Cottages (Oahu)

These two- and three-bedroom cottages are located on White Plains and Nimitz Beaches, on the southwestern side of Oahu. They are fully furnished with kitchens and washer/dryer.

The cottages are convenient to Barbers Point Golf Course, and of course, fantastic beaches that are perfect for kayaking, surfing, or stand-up paddle boarding. White Plains Beach Surf Shack rents bodyboards, surfboards, stand up paddleboards, and other beach equipment. They also offer private surfing lessons!

Pililaau Army Recreation Center (Oahu)

This Army resort , located on Pokai Bay Beach, is in Waianae, a non-touristy area on the west side of Oahu. It’s perfect for low-key R&R and unforgettable sunsets! Pililaau offers beach cabins ranging in size from studios to three bedrooms.

During your stay, enjoy waterfront dining at The Beach House at 604, Pililaau’s on-site restaurant featuring a beautiful outdoor deck overlooking the ocean.

Pacific Missile Range Facility Barking Sands Beach Cottages (Kauai)

Far from the hustle and bustle of Oahu is Pacific Missile Range Facility (PMRF), located on the west side of Kauai island. This beautiful island has incredible beaches, canyons, waterfalls, and hiking. It’s a great destination for families who love outdoor adventures, and there are many thing to do on Kauai with kids .

PMRF is the only Kauai military resort and features beach cottages , plus a hotel-style facility. Most cottages sleep up to six guests, while the VIP cottage can accommodate up to eight. All cottages are fully furnished and include a kitchen, washer/dryer, and BBQ grill.

During your stay, rent outdoor gear and water sports equipment at the Community Recreation Center, get discounted tickets for local activities though the Tickets & Travel office, or catch a movie at the base’s outdoor theater.

Kilauea Military Camp (Hawaii Island)

Located on Hawaii Island (aka the “Big Island”), Kilauea Military Camp (KMC) offers the unique experience of staying in a tropical rain forest on 52 acres right in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (HVNC), one of Hawaii’s most famous landmarks . KMC is also the only Big Island military lodging.

Accommodations at KMC include one- and three-bedroom apartments and cottages ranging in size from one to three bedrooms. KMC also has a small number of six- and seven-bedrooms houses, plus dormitories suitable for large groups.

You will have no shortage of things to do while staying at KMC. On-site amenities include bike rental, tennis, basketball, and the fitness center. Take advantage of your location in HVNC to do a few day hikes, or explore the rest of the island. KMC offers numerous tours, such as Kilauea Volcano, the town of Hilo, and various island beaches.

Besides recreational lodging, you can stay in regular base lodging on any of the other Hawaii military installations, all of which are on Oahu.

• Navy Lodge has one facility on Ford Island, which is part of JBPHH, convenient to the USS Missouri Memorial and the Pacific Aviation Museum.
• The Inn at Schofield Barracks is in an inland part of Oahu by Wahiawa.
• Tripler Army Medical Center/Fort Shafter lodging , run by IHG Army Hotels, is roughly between JBPHH and Honolulu.
• Inns of the Corps and the Fairway Inn , as mentioned above, are located on MCBH.
• Five Palms transient lodging facility is also located on MCBH.

Eligibility: Who Can Stay at Military Resorts in Hawaii?

In general, eligible patrons include:

• Active duty, retired, and Reserve members of the United States military and their family members
• Current and retired DoD civilian employees and their family members
• Disabled veterans , Purple Heart recipients and former POWs who have a VA Health Identification Card (VHIC)
• Registered Veteran Caregivers

Some facilities have broader eligibility. Contact the facilities directly for their specific policies and ID requirements.

My wife and I are jet setters who used the space A travel quite frequently up to 15 years before I retired from the Army in 1996 and another 20 years + after up to this day.

We just booked the Hale Koa for two weeks next summer. But there are a few places you mentioned that I would like to check out. My husband loves Bellows but we never seem to be able to find availability. Barbers Point? Are those ocean front cottages? I have two teens so keeping them busy is a must! July 2021 – my husband, I & 9 yr old grandson enjoyed 11 days @ Hale Koa, 5 days @ KMC & 5 days @ barking sands. Absolutely beautiful. Did it all from the Green sand beach to a helicopter tour.

Hi Stephanie, if I take my sisters with me, will they have access to get on and off base while staying on base. Will they be able to accompany me in the commissary?

Policies vary by installation. At MCBH, for example, you must sponsor your guests and they can get a day pass from the pass house (see the FAQs tab on this page ). They can accompany you in the commissary but can’t buy anything themselves.

How many people can stay per beach cottages including kids. Beach cottages at Konehe Bay

Their website does not specify a limit. The beach cottages are 2-BR. Each bedroom has a queen size bed, and the couch in the living area is not a pullout bed. If you want to squeeze in more than 4 people, I recommend contacting MCBH to confirm that it’s allowed (and perhaps they can supply a cot).

A budget and more affordable Hawaii vacation will be around $100 per person per day and an estimated $700 per week to $1,400 for two weeks. A one-month economical trip will be about $3,000.

These amounts are provided from previous Hawaii travelers, and Active Duty Service Members’ discounts are not included in the estimates.

Most establishments offer discounted rates and other perks for their product and services to recognize and support military personnel’s service.

The holiday business and leisure industry are dynamic sectors that honor vacation and travel discounts for military families.

Offering special military discounts gives a positive marketing advantage to companies and establishments by creating a good impression not only to those in the service but also to civilians and regular customers.

Car Shipping

One way to save costs on local transportation in Hawaii is to have your car, especially if you plan to stay for an extended period. If you’re thinking, “I want to ship my car to Hawaii ,” car shipping services are also readily available.

Car shipping fees from the US mainland to Hawaii would range from around $1,500 – $1,800, while the cost for shipping a car from Hawaii to the mainland will be about $800. Most car shipping services offer a $100 discount for military personnel.

Plenty of restaurants, travel agencies, and tour businesses all over Hawaii give great discounted offerings to military members, and you need to know where to look to find them.

There are restaurants in Hawaii that offer up to 50% off on food purchases on select days. However, this does not include alcoholic beverages. Some tour agencies even offer complimentary tours to military sites and historical landmarks for military families. Other tours give a 10% – 15% discount on their inter Island excursion rates.

Most businesses would require a valid identification card as proof of reference before active and retired military men can avail of their offered discounts.

Active-duty personnel can present their official military ID card. Veterans can use their Veterans ID cards as proof of identification.

Hawaii is an excellent option for a vacation, but the costs can be high. Fortunately, many establishments offer discounts and promos for military personnel that can help reduce their expenses as they enjoy their vacation.

Acceptable Identification at the TSA Checkpoint

Adult passengers 18 and older must show valid identification at the airport checkpoint in order to travel.

• Beginning May 7, 2025, if you plan to use your state-issued ID or license to fly within the U.S., make sure it is REAL ID compliant . If you are not sure if your ID complies with REAL ID, check with your state department of motor vehicles.  
• State-Issued Drivers License or State-Issued ID
• U.S. passport
• U.S. passport card
• DHS trusted traveler cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST)
• U.S. Department of Defense ID, including IDs issued to dependents
• Permanent resident card
• Border crossing card
• An acceptable photo ID issued by a  federally recognized , Tribal Nation/Indian Tribe
• HSPD-12 PIV card
• Foreign government-issued passport
• Canadian provincial driver's license or Indian and Northern Affairs Canada card
• Transportation worker identification credential
• U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Employment Authorization Card (I-766)
• U.S. Merchant Mariner Credential
• Veteran Health Identification Card (VHIC)

In coordination with its DHS counterparts, TSA has identified acceptable alternate identification for use in special circumstances at the checkpoint.

A weapon permit is not an acceptable form of identification. A temporary driver's license is not an acceptable form of identification.

Beginning May 7, 2025, if you plan to use your state-issued ID or license to fly within the U.S., make sure it is REAL ID compliant . If you are not sure if your ID complies with REAL ID, check with your state department of motor vehicles.

TSA currently accepts expired ID up to a year after expiration, for the above listed forms of identification. DHS has extended the REAL ID enforcement deadline to May 7, 2025. Learn more about REAL ID on  TSA’s REAL ID  webpage.

TSA does not require children under 18 to provide identification when traveling within the United States. Contact the airline for questions regarding specific ID requirements for travelers under 18.

Forgot Your ID?

In the event you arrive at the airport without valid identification, because it is lost or at home, you may still be allowed to fly. The TSA officer may ask you to complete an identity verification process which includes collecting information such as your name, current address, and other personal information to confirm your identity. If your identity is confirmed, you will be allowed to enter the screening checkpoint. You will be subject to additional screening, to include a patdown and screening of carry-on property.

You will not be allowed to enter the security checkpoint if your identity cannot be confirmed, you choose to not provide proper identification or you decline to cooperate with the identity verification process.

TSA recommends that you arrive at least two hours in advance of your flight time.

Names With Suffixes

TSA accepts variations on suffixes on boarding passes and ID. Suffixes are not required on boarding passes. If there is a suffix on the boarding pass, and there is not one on the ID or vice versa, that is considered an acceptable variation.

If your identity cannot be verified, you will not be allowed to enter the screening checkpoint.
