Touring Colorado Wineries Near the Springs

Exploring Colorado wineries in the Royal Gorge region is an easy day trip from Colorado Springs. Here’s our entertaining experience and itinerary. Tip: It’s great for taking out-of-state visitors.

Overlooking the vineyards at The Winery at Holy Cross Abbey, one of the Colorado wineries in the Royal Gorge region

It was that time when your relatives come in from Stockholm, Sweden, and announce that they’d like to tour some of the local wineries.

“Colorado is dry,” said Anders, mid-40s, 6 and a half feet tall, in that clipped way that comes from English being your second language and Swedish being your first. “There are mountains.”

“There should be good wine,” said his wife, Mari.

“What do you think, Johannson?” I asked their 14-year-old son.

“He has his headphones on,” said Anders.

This was true.

“Are we all going to fit into one Subaru?” said my wife, Katherine. “With the dog?”

“We’re from Europe,” said Anders. “In Sweden, this is an SUV.”

“It’s a plan,” I announced.

Though I’ve lived in Colorado Springs for more than 15 years, though I consider myself something of a cognoscenti when it comes to all things Colorado Springs, and though I love wine, the truth is that I have never explored the wineries around Colorado Springs, though most certainly I had heard about them. Being the intrepid reporter I am, I got Googling and soon came up with a modest itinerary that would take us to three wineries, all of which were not much more than a 45-minute drive from our city.

A bottle and glass of wine white in harvest gold hues at Bugling Elk Vineyard and Winery, one of the Colorado wineries in the Royal Gorge region

Stop One: Bugling Elk Vineyards & Winery, Penrose

We started off at Bugling Elk Vineyards & Winery , which is about a 35-minute drive down Nevada Avenue, which turns into State Highway 115, toward Cañon City. As we drove I took the time to survey the Swedes to find out a little about their wine preferences in advance of actually tasting any.

“Beer,” Anders told me. “And if not beer, snaps . And if not snaps , wine.”

“Red or white?” I said.

“I am for the red,” said his wife, Mari.

“How about you, Johannsen?” I asked their 14-year-old.

“He’s 14,” said my wife.

“I don’t know how it works in Stockholm,” I said.

“It doesn’t work like that,” said the 14-year-old.

Run by Shawn Kauffman and his wife, Alexis, Bugling Elk Winery is housed in a sprawling wood-paneled space which Shawn, a former Green Beret, built himself. “Except for the concrete floor,” he admitted.

We sat down in the corner of the room and Shawn offered to arrange a tasting for us, which would cost each of us $5. This seemed more or less standard at the wineries we visited, and for the budget conscious among us is one of the key reasons to recommend the experience: It’s affordable.

We were the only ones there, perhaps because it was noonish on a Sunday and the rest of Colorado was either still asleep or not on, well, as European of a timeline as we were.

After supplying us with a tasting menu, Shawn began bringing out wines for us to sample, as well as a killer charcuterie platter which he constructed himself with lightning speed in between bringing us glasses of wine.

Though they serve a winning gewürztraminer and riesling from Palisade, Colorado, the standouts for us were Bugling Elks reds, particularly the Crimson Cabernet which Shawn told us had been aged in whiskey barrels procured from Axe and the Oak right here in the Springs. We all took home a bottle. ( For the budget conscious, it’s $7 a glass or $22 a bottle.)

An aerial view of the pastoral scene at Pop's Vineyard, one of the Colorad wineries in the Royal Gorge region

Stop Two: Pop’s Vineyard, Penrose

Our next stop was about 10 minutes away at Pop’s Vineyard , which is run, as you might imagine, by Pop and his family — there’s a plaque above the door with the names of the whole family. It’s housed in a welcoming, lodge-like space with a terrific outdoor seating area. Pop greeted us warmly, made a couple of jokes about how the secret purpose of the winery is to give his kids a reason to come home, and offered us a tasting for $5.

He began with lighter, fruity wines and moved toward the reds. There were a few other parties there, one of them being a trio of women who seemed to have ridden their horses there.

“Seriously?” I asked.

“There’s the horse,” one of them told me.

We all looked at the horse.

“This is very Colorado,” said Anders.

Which is exactly true — it is very Colorado to ride your horse to a winery. And that seems to me another important reason to undertake a journey like ours. It’s a relaxed, low-key way to show visitors from out of town the beauty and impressive expansiveness of the Centennial State.

And also the wine is very good.

Pop admitted a preference for sweeter wines. His Just Sweet Enough Red is a standout, as was the cabernet-merlot blend, which features a picture of Pop and his son on the label from a few years earlier — back when Pop was still working for the Department of Corrections and was about 30 pounds heavier. “I’m the fat guy,” he said, pointing to himself on the label.

When I went inside to buy a bottle, it seemed as if most of Pop’s family was there, and they let me know that if you buy a bottle of wine, they waive the price of the tasting. “I’ll take a bottle of the red with the fat guy on the label,” I told them.

His son knew exactly the bottle I was talking about.

Pouring a glass of award-winning red wine at The Winery at Holy Cross Abbey, one of the Colorado wineries near Colorado Springs

Stop Three: The Winery at Holy Cross Abbey, Cañon City

Our final stop of the day was at The Winery at Holy Cross Abbey which is located in the middle of Cañon City and is one of the most celebrated wineries in Colorado. This is clearly a bigger operation than the other family-run operations that we had visited, and we sat outside in an expansive seating area with a clear view of the historic abbey next door. Compared to the extremely serene surroundings of Pop’s place and Bugling Elk, the Abbey seemed to me positively urban.

“This is nothing compared to Stockholm,” pointed out Anders. “That is urban.”

“And the wine is fantastic,” said Mari.

About this there is no question. Though The Winery at Holy Cross Abbey offers a VIP tasting option for $40, we opted to construct our own experience. We selected our own set of reds and whites, making sure not to miss their truly high-end, award-winning bottles: the 2019 Revelation and the impressively robust 2021 Cabernet Reserve. The bottles themselves were at the top end of our price range, but the tasting experience offers a chance to experience some of the best in Colorado wines. If you have folks in from out of town who aren’t necessarily up for multiple stops, the Abbey is the place to hit.

We returned home around 5 p.m. after an amazing experience that frankly did not break the bank. And yeah, we know we missed some wineries. But this was our Part One. If you’ve got a favorite place or want to send us somewhere to taste the wine, let us know. Please.

Guide to Wine and Wineries in Colorado

Bookcliff VIneyards Palisade Colorado

Northern California isn’t the only place in America known for great wine anymore. Thanks to Coloradoan’s passion for quality, wine here is award winning. You can find a variety of styles, with most of the local grapes grown on the Western Slope.

Today there are over one hundred wineries across the state, situated everywhere from the Front Range and Western Slope, to mountain towns such as Steamboat Springs and Bailey. Some even offer lodging on-site . The Colorado Wine Industry Development Board states:

Colorado’s Rocky Mountains are blessed with warm days, cool nights and low humidity – perfect conditions for cultivating wine grapes with the complex character and chemistry needed to produce award-winning wines.

Palisade CO Wine Vineyards Mount Garfield

Wine got started on the Western Slope more than 100 years ago when the first vineyards were planted. However, during Prohibition in the 1920s, vineyards were replaced with fruit orchids. In the last few decades, vineyards have once again reclaimed their soil on land around Palisade, as well as across Colorado. Winemaking is alive and well in the Rocky Mountains!

Elevations on the Western Slope range from 4,500 to 6,000 feet, making the vineyards some of the highest on earth. The dry climate helps keep plant disease low, the high elevation and 300+ sunny days gives the grapes great flavor and complexion, and the cool nighttime temperature encourages acid retention, crucial to the best winemaking.

Guided Wine Tours

Several companies offer guided tours of Colorado wine country. Sit back and relax as you’re shuttled safely around the vineyards. Enjoy wine tastings around Palisade with your friends and family.

American Spirit Shuttle offers winery tours in the Grand and North Fork river, and Surface Creek valleys of Western Colorado. They also give Agricultural and Brewilery™ tours, as well as trips to national parks, monuments, and areas of Eastern Utah.

Exploring Colorado’s Wine Country: 8 Perfect Places To Visit

  • Wine Regions

Colorado may not come to mind when you think of wines and wine regions, but it should! The state’s cool nighttime climate and more than 300 days of sunshine make it an ideal place for growing grapes.

Settlers planted vines in the 1800s, but it wasn’t until the state passed the Colorado Wine Industry Development Act in 1990 that the wine industry really took off. Five wineries opened that year; now there are well over 100 in the state.

Colorado’s wineries are the highest in North America and the second-highest in the world, slightly behind those in Argentina. Plus, they aren’t as crowded as the wineries in Napa , making for a more relaxing experience.

Here are eight great places to visit for an introduction to Colorado’s wine scene.

Peach tree rows in Palisades Colorado orchard on sunny summer afternoon

1. Palisade

There are two areas in Colorado that are federally designated American Viticultural Areas (AVAs). One of them is the Grand Valley, which includes the town of Palisade. Palisade is the heart and soul of Colorado’s wine country and a must-visit on any Colorado wine tour. You’ll find Palisade off of Interstate 70 in western Colorado, under an hour from the Utah border.

Palisade is home to Colorado’s original winery, Colorado Cellars , an award-winning, family-owned operation. It offers a wide range of varieties , from chardonnay to cabernet to port, plus some interesting blends as well. Try out its huckleberry, elderberry, and peach wines, as well as its interestingly named Roadkill Red.

There are more than 25 wineries in Palisade, and all offer something unique. Red Fox Cellars is a relative newcomer to the Palisade wine scene. This family-run establishment has a rustic and humble vibe that will make you feel right at home. It’s known for its merlots, fruit wines, and creative wine cocktails. Port lovers should head straight to Graystone Winery . The boutique winery offers both red and white ports that have won several awards. Maison La Belle Vie Winery offers great wines with equally great views. Sip on reds like merlot and cabernet sauvignon and enjoy a freshly prepared charcuterie board, all while overlooking the vineyard and nearby rugged mountains.

The best way to experience all that Palisade has to offer is to follow the Palisade Fruit & Wine Byway . Its three routes will take you to fruit orchards, wineries, lavender farms, and more. You can opt to drive the byway or rent a bike in town and pedal from stop to stop. Most of the road is fairly flat, but there are a few climbs, so be sure to map out your route beforehand. There are also a number of companies that offer drivers and tours to take you around to the wineries; this is a great option for enjoying yourself safely.

2. West Elks

Colorado’s second AVA is West Elks, an area that includes the towns of Hotchkiss and Paonia and is home to about a dozen wineries.

The Leroux Creek Inn & Vineyards in Hotchkiss is a 54-acre farm with an adobe-style inn, fields for wildlife, and a 4-acre vineyard. The winery organically grows two hybrid grapes: Chambourcin and Cayuga, which they make into French-style wines. The Storm Cellar is a boutique winery in Hotchkiss that released its first wines in 2019, but it has already been featured in national magazines and won several local awards. The Storm Cellar specializes in white and rose wines and grows its grapes in an old apple orchard.

Art meets wine at Azura Cellars and Gallery in Paonia. A couple bought the property when they outgrew their art studio in the Vail Valley of Colorado and named it Azura after their beloved sailboat. They established the art gallery first before taking on winemaking. Today, you can sip on bold reds like merlot and malbec or whites like pinot gris and riesling while browsing the stunning artwork .

Aerial Photo of Boulder, Colorado

Although there are only two federally recognized AVAs in Colorado, there are a number of other wineries in business across the Centennial State.

You will find award-winning mead in Boulder at the Redstone Meadery . Mead consists of alcohol fermented from honey instead of grapes. There are fewer than 500 meaderies in the United States, and eight of them are in Colorado. The Redstone Meadery is a leader among meaderies and has won several national and international awards. The meadery began by offering only one mead wine, Black Blackberry Nectar, but it has since grown to include other flavors.

Aerial View of Colorado Springs at Dusk

4. Colorado Springs

To taste a large selection of Colorado wines, head to the Colorado Springs area.

The Wines of Colorado tasting room offers daily tastings at the base of the iconic Pikes Peak. Find your favorite wine and sit at a table overlooking Fountain Creek for a meal . A local favorite is the Colorado Wine Burger, piled high with mushrooms, onions, and green chiles.

Benedictine monks founded the beautiful Winery at Holy Cross Abbey . The Abbey was once a boarding school, but the school closed in the mid-1980s. The remaining monks decided to start a winery and brought in winemakers to help. Today, the winery produces award-winning wines on its tranquil grounds. Taste the wine in the tasting room, and then grab a cheese plate or fruit tray to enjoy on the grounds. Or you can pair your tasting with a little adventure on the Whitewater to Wine tour. The half- or full-day tour will take you rafting down the Arkansas River and later to a VIP tasting at Holy Cross complete with a selection of cheeses and fruits.

5. Evergreen

Head to the Colorado foothills, and you just might see winemaking happening in a parking lot.

Creekside Cellars sits in the heart of downtown Evergreen. Its small parking lot is often full of crates of fresh grapes ready to be crushed and made into fine wine on-site. The winery doubles as a restaurant that serves up delicious paninis big enough to share. But the wine is best enjoyed on the winery’s outdoor patio overlooking Bear Creek. It’s a serene place, and you will likely see some deer, elk, or maybe even a bear! Note that the dining area is small, so you’ll want to make reservations.

Located in southwestern Colorado, Olathe is known for its sweet corn, but it’s also home to a local, family-owned winery, Mountain View Winery . The organic farm also grows fruits and vegetables that visitors are allowed to pick in the spring and fall. From vine to bottle, all the wines are made on-site, with choices ranging from port to white and red wine.

The winery is part of Harvest Hosts , a members-only club that allows RVs to park and camp overnight for free.

Create your own wine blend at Four Leaves Winery in historic Durango . The boutique winery imports its grapes but makes the wine in the building. You can try your hand at winemaking , too. First, try the wines to see what flavor profile you like, and then work with the winemakers to come up with your own blend. Finish by bottling and corking your wine and creating your own custom label. This is a unique experience perfect for groups and special occasions.

Wine in a keg? That’s right! Your wine will come straight from a stainless steel keg or in a can at The Infinite Monkey Theorem in downtown Denver . The winery claims that wine keeps better in a keg as opposed to an open wine bottle, but the can is just for fun. The Infinite Monkey Theorem takes pride in its urban, unpretentious roots and aims to incorporate the community into each of its wines. The tasting room has a funky feel and is a must-see when visiting the Mile High City.

The best time to visit Colorado’s wine country is during the harvest season in September. The weather is phenomenal, and the wineries are bustling with activity. It’s also when Palisade holds its annual wine festival, Colorado Mountain Winefest . It’s a weekend filled with food, ice sculpting, seminars, live music, and, of course, lots of wine!

Image of Amy Sward

Amy’s passion for traveling and writing started at a young age. She grew up traveling with her family -- visiting three continents by the time she was 16. She’s always looking for her next trip and isn't happy until she has at least one (or two) on the horizon. She is most fulfilled when she’s exploring new areas like a local and finding good deals on travel and activities.

Amy studied broadcast journalism at the University of Missouri-Columbia. She started her career as a TV news producer in Tulsa and Denver, winning 4 Emmy Awards for her work. She’s also worked in production for HGTV and as a spokeswoman for a small Colorado mountain town.

Amy is married with two young kids. Both kids got their passports before age one, as it’s her goal to instill the travel bug in them from a young age. If you can’t find Amy at an airport, you can find her trying out new restaurants, reading, or running.

The town of Palisade, as well as Grand Junction, are renowned hubs for over 25 wineries, many offering unique Colorado wine tours.

The region boasts an ideal climate with gentle breezes and abundant artesian wells, making it a prime location for expansive vineyards to flourish.

In addition to taking a guided wine tour, visitors can also:

  • Educate themselves on winemaking
  • Listen to music amidst the Colorado vineyards

7. Grand Junction Wine Tours

colorado springs wine tour

With a reputation for its exceptional Colorado wineries, Grand Junction is a charming town situated in the Grand Valley. And it boasts two-thirds of the state’s vineyard acreage and over a quarter of its wineries.

Benefitting from ample irrigation, the Grand Valley’s microclimate, creates the perfect conditions for grapes to mature to perfection.

The weather is characterized by sunny days, dry air, and cool nights. The end result is a range of award-winning wines that you simply have to taste.

Wine tastings in this climate, along with high altitude conditions, make for a totally unique experience for wine lovers.

If you’re looking for a fantastic Colorado wine tour experience, or even a boutique winery, we recommend booking a guided tour in Grand Junction wine country.

When is the best time for a Colorado wine tour?

There’s no wrong time of year to book a Colorado wine tour, but you may find certain seasons more enjoyable than others.

In the winter, some Colorado wineries offer tours but the summer and fall harvest seasons are the best times to visit for the full wine-tasting experience.

Spring is also a great time of year to take a tour of the winery as it offers a bit more peace and quiet as you’ll find fewer people visiting.

In addition, the spring weather is still quite cool but there are more activities and tastings available than in the winter months.

How many wineries are in Colorado?

According to this fact sheet about the Colorado wine industry , there are over 150 licensed wineries in the state.

And near Denver in particular there are just over 100 wineries, many of which offer gorgeous scenery along with delicious wine tastings.

These figures includes about twenty cideries and other similar producers thanks to the lush growing seasons.

Colorado-grown grapes are deliciously unique and make perfect pairings with wines like cabernet franc or even dessert wines.

Does Colorado have good wineries?

Yes, Colorado’s wine country is like none in North America! The state is home to popular wine tasting rooms and vineyards, like Holy Cross Abbey and the Colorado Mountain Winefest .

But Palisade is considered the wine capital of the state and is located about an hour away from the Utah border. Palisade Wineries are especially a must-visit for any Colorado wine tour.

For the largest vineyard in Colorado, check out Colorado Cellars Winery which is an award-winning, family owned winery founded in 1978. Some of their most popular wine brands today include Rocky Mountain Vineyards!

We hope this list of the best Colorado wine tours tantalizes your taste buds and helps you discover the amazing wine regions of the state.
