Are the Superior Suites on Fred Olsen Balmoral worth the extra money?
As is the case when you book a suite on any cruise ship, you’ll have more room in a Superior Suite, with a separate sitting area and balcony as well as your bathroom and bedroom. Certainly, with the the Superior Suites on Fred Olsen Balmoral, you do get more for your money, because they qualify for the line’s Suite Dreams package. Qualifying for the package means sparkling wine, fruit and flowers in your room and daily canapés before dinner. You’ll have your own bathrobe and slippers, a world atlas and country guide in your suite, as well as shuttle vouchers to help you get to your land excursion destination and to pay for your laundry and pressing of formal wear. It’s worth noting, however, that if you’re travelling on a mini-cruise, not all these services are available. Share this:

As we sail, we find that our passengers like to sit on deck, absorbed by the awe-inspiring riverside panoramas that unfold before them. From the comfortable vantage point of a teak-floored Pandaw deck, it's hard not to become hypnotised by the unceasing human and wildlife activity that characterises the great rivers of Asia.
Your Stateroom
The Pandaw stateroom is the most celebrated feature of our ships, combining splendid colonial-era character with exquisite contemporary comfort.
Finished in brass and teak, the main and upper deck rooms are a spacious 168 square feet (15.6 sqm), with the exception of the Zawgyi Pandaw which is 150 square feet (14 sqm). As the space is much loved by all our passengers, we have ensured that with each ship we build, the stateroom remains essentially the same. Be advised: our cabins do not have mini-bars, satellite TV's, internet access or telephones. Passengers tend to choose Pandaw in order to escape from the tiresome features found in international business hotels.
New for 2021 are the exclusive Pandaw suites, available on Mekong Pandaw, Tonle Pandaw, Orient Pandaw and Pandaw II. These suites, the size of two regular Pandaw Staterooms, offer guests even more space and comfort with private balcony and lounge area in every suite from which to enjoy the serene surroundings. In addition to the original 'Owners Suite' aboard the RV Kalay Pandaw, guests now have more opportunities to experience true colonial luxury with Pandaw.
Many passengers have described life on board a Pandaw as more like being a guest on a private motor yacht, than a passenger on a conventional cruise ship. For a start, our itineraries and our quest for the most spectacular sights and experiences is far more intrepid than conventional cruises. And when passengers return to the ship after experiencing the wonders of life onshore, they are coming back to a floating oasis of low-key luxury, caring service and all the good things of life.
- Fruit and flowers on arrival
- Kimonos and slippers
- Spa-branded amenities
- Unlimited mineral water
- Free use of mini DVD player on request and selection of DVDs from our library (subject to availability)
The Pandaw dining rooms are designed to open up along the sides to allow cool breezes to waft through. Only at night we do close them up and turn on the air-conditioning. We know our passengers prefer fresh air to chilled air. The new Katha Pandaw, designed in response to feedback from our passengers, has no formal dining room but rather an open air dining space on deck.
At Pandaw we pride ourselves on offering a great choice of local cuisine and exotic foods. We source supplies and ingredients as locally as possible, always in accordance with strictly-monitored environmental health standards.
Breakfast is a buffet, while lunch features a buffet, plus soup, salad and a desert table, with the main course served at the table. Dinner is by waiter-service at the table.
We are happy to cater for individual dietary preferences. Passengers who prefer not to be served hot or spicy foods are offered delicious European-style alternatives and vegetarians are especially well catered for. Other special diets may be accommodated, by prior arrangement. Our chefs know that most passengers want to sample versions of the best, most characteristic dishes of each country they pass through.
Spa & Gym
Currently only available on our Mekong Pandaw ship, the Pandaw Spa offers head massage, foot massage and body massages in dedicated spa areas.
Our onboard spa is compact in size and staffed by a single highly-trained individual. As demand can be high, please be sure to book in advance.
Lecture & Cultures
From its earliest days, the Pandaw concept has been deeply rooted in cultural and historical expertise, worn lightly. On any Pandaw river expedition, daily briefings are hosted by your purser and guide, which provide a forum to discuss the day's events and plans.
Most sailings will feature at least one cultural performance: in Burma it is the marionette theatre; in Cambodia the Royal Khmer Ballet; in Laos villagers perform a dance on deck.
We also offer a range of onboard activities including: cooking demonstrations, fruit carving, napkin tying and a tour of the working ship.
Themed movie nights are also popular - the film Indochine in Vietnam, The Killing Fields in Cambodia and The Lady in Burma are some of the favourites.
Whilst the peace and tranquillity of our passengers is our priority and many passengers prefer to read, write or engage in painting or photography, we do offer a number of social activities that have become a traditional part of any Pandaw river expedition.
There are a number of social events during an expedition which will include a welcome dinner, cocktail parties on deck, a farewell gala dinner and dinners themed with local menus and costume. In the Burma dry season we often tie up on a sandbank and have a barbeque beach party on the sands, usually around a bonfire in winter.
Excursions ashore are a key part of any Pandaw river expedition. These may take the form of a good walk through the countryside and villages; further explorations by speedboat going deeper into jungle or up river; horse cart rides in Burma or cyclos in Cambodia.
We try not to use cars or coaches wherever possible and in some places only the most basic local transportation is available, like at Katha in Burma where you may find yourself in the back of a truck looking for a working elephant camp.
We stop at least once a day, and usually twice. On the Mekong we will spend a day and a night in exciting Phnom Penh; in Burma we need at least a day and a half in both Pagan and Mandalay. Our expert guides will accompany you on these explorations ashore or you are welcome to make individual excursions as there are no issues of safety or security in any of the ports we visit.
- All scheduled excursions are accompanied by members of the crew with first aid kits, water and cold towels
- Entrance fees for sights included in the itinerary
- Comprehensive fact sheets or 'trip books' provided
- Passengers can visit Pandaw Charity projects along the way and interact with the local communities who welcome us
- There is an opportunity to travel to local markets with the Pandaw Head Chef at least once during the cruise programme
- We provide crew assists for those who require them in areas where river banks are steep and slippery
- While individual excursions are encouraged, passengers are asked to rejoin the ship at the appointed time to avoid delays in our schedule
Imagine making your own discoveries by bike though the pagodas and temples of Pagan or exploring the scenic Burmese countryside and friendly villages at your own pace.
Pandaw offers high quality Giant brand mountain bikes on all Pandaw ships, for departures from December 2015. At each river stop, the Pandaw crew will advise travellers on the best routes to follow for independent exploration and if required, a member of the crew will accompany travellers on their cycle adventures.
Family-Friendly Cruises
Contrary to some perceptions, Pandaw river expeditions are not just for the more mature. They offer brilliant educational experiences for younger people. Given that all our sailing areas are very safe and secure and the local people are friendly, these sailings provide a great way for your kids to interact with locals and learn about different cultures.
We carry fishing rods and badminton nets, and often when we tether for the night on a sand bank, the crew will set up the badminton net or arrange a game of football with the locals all joining in. We carry also board games like chess, Monopoly and Scrabble to while away those long afternoons cruising. Kids also enjoy the cookery demonstrations and other onboard activities. Certain school holiday departures are designated as especially 'family friendly'.
Thanks to the adventurous spirit of three brothers on the shores of Oslofjord in Norway, Fred. Olsen have been sailing the world for 175 years. And every little thing they've learned informs the way they cruise today.
There are many reasons why cruising with Fred. Olsen is so special.
It's their award-winning, hand-crafted itineraries designed to take you to the most amazing places on earth, at the very best possible times. The Azores when the Perseid meteor shower streaks the night sky, Canada, to witness the famous 'Fall' leaves, and to seek out the mesmerising Northern Lights, when they are at their strongest.
It's their smaller ships, where the atmosphere on board is always warm and friendly, as well as being able to get to the more interesting places - like the furthest reaches of Norway's lesser-known fjords, and through Europe's narrow waterways and canals, to the very heart of some of the world's most fascinating cities.
And it's their unrivalled on board experience, where a great amount of care and consideration goes into ensuring that every single day is as enjoyable as possible. Because of this, guests can enjoy Signature Experiences on board, which include hosted stargazing on deck, regional cuisine - with cookery demonstrations and tastings, wildlife experts that host engaging talks, as well as off-the-beaten-track scenic cruising.

Fred Olsen launches ‘Suite Dreams’ extras package
- Share on WhatsApp
- Share by email
Fred Olsen is launching a Suite Dreams package of extras to try to boost sales of its top-end cabins. Two pages in the second-edition 2010/11 brochure are devoted to the package, available from January 2010. They spell out the benefits of having a larger cabin with more space and a balcony, as well as the various extras passengers will receive. These include a bottle of sparkling wine and fruit basket, canapes served in the afternoon, a free pressing service for formal wear, discounts for using the laundry service and free access to port shuttle buses. In addition, suites will be equipped with binoculars, a world atlas and country guide, and a pair of umbrellas for use ashore. Fred Olsen general sales manager Lol Nichols said the cruiseline has a lot of suites to sell after stretching two of its ships, and always struggles to sell them on shorter cruises. Both Balmoral and Braemar were cut in half last year and mid-sections inserted , increasing the passenger capacity and number of suites available. Nichols said agents should point out the Suite Dreams benefits to clients as they might persuade customers to trade up, which would increase their commission on that booking. He said: “Once someone has booked a suite and appreciated the pleasure of the extra space and a private balcony, and a whole host of attractive little extras, they will be reluctant to trade down.” He added that Fred Olsen is offering early check-in, with lunch on board, to suite passengers on a trial basis across the fleet. “It is always very busy on turnaround days because we have ship visits, so we are testing it to make sure we can deliver on board.” The second-edition brochure goes on sale on November 5.

QE2 Cruise Packages
Combine at the world’s most iconic floating hotel with a luxury cruise aboard the regal Queen Mary 2 with our exclusive QE2 cruise packages…
Built in 1967 and originally known as Hull 736, Queen Elizabeth 2 was synonymous with luxury cruising. The ship’s colourful history, which saw her cover 5.6 million miles and complete 806 transatlantic crossings for Cunard – as well as a stint carrying troops in the Falklands War – means the QE2 is rightfully remembered as the world’s most famous ocean liner.
Now based in Dubai, Queen Elizabeth 2 has been reborn as an elegant hotel. The period furniture and original portholes have been maintained, while modifications to the ship’s suites and restaurants mean that she sits effortlessly among the world’s most desirable hotels.
The collection of packages below give you the opportunity to enjoy a stay on Queen Elizabeth 2 either before, or after, a voyage aboard another famous Queen, the QM2 . We’ve included a variety of Cunard sailings to suit all preferences and are delighted to feature itineraries in the Mediterranean, Asia and Australia.

Moscow Day trip - is it worth the expense?

We are booked on the Zuiderdam and will be in St Petersburg, Russia on 6/28 & 29, 2019. HAL offers a very expensive day trip (17-1/2 hrs) to Moscow. Has anyone done it? Is it worth the expense? We do not plan to ever return to Russia so we want to do what we need to do while there!
Any help or recommendations will be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much...Annette

JMHO but ... having been to both St. Petersburg and Moscow on multiple occasions, I would not take the long trek to Moscow if I had only 2 days in port. Two days in Saint Petersburg barely scratches the surface of this beautiful city that, again just my opinion, much more beautiful than Moscow. Booking a cruise that offers 3 days in St. Petersburg would have the benefit of taking a trek to Moscow on the middle day - that is the only way that I would consider visiting Moscow if I arrived via cruise ship.

I would not recommend that you go to Moscow with only two days. it will be a very hard trip for you. I recommend instead of Moscow to visit Peterhof and Pushkin in the suburbs of St. Petersburg. they're great.
If you've not visited St Petersburg before I wouldn't suggest a side-trip to Moscow even if you had three days in port.
I think Moscow has been added (usually to cruises with 3 days in St P.) as an option primarily for the benefit of those who've previously visited St P.
Just MHO as always

Spot on, per usual JB. Even with three days in port, the Moscow trip is a very long day and the following full day's tour is StP would most likely find me sitting like a zombie on the tour bus.
In addition to those who have previously visited StP, Moscow often appeals to those who want to "see it all" but often end up seeing/enjoying less due to fatigue.
There are river cruises that offer Moscow but river cruises necessitate procuring a Russian visa.
I absolutely love Moscow. There is nothing like the feeling of standing in Red Square, going through the Kremlin, etc.... Though - I agree with the others - even if you have 3 days, I would spend all 3 in St. Petersburg.
I have been 2x, once on a land trip and once on a river cruise. I was disappointed in the river cruise. My high school land trip did a much better job in St. Petersburg (then Leningrad) and Moscow. If you want to see Moscow, go back on a land trip.
Yes, Moscow is a beautiful city, but to visit all the important attractions it takes at least 3 days.

Agree with above posts - a land trip is, imho, the best way to visit Moscow - there is much to see.

Rancho Mirage, Ca. #6. Posted November 5, 2015. To me unless you have a 2 rooms it's not a suite. I think the should call the PH a large cabin--that is what it is. However every cruise line does the same thing so it's not just "O".
