Home Bunch - Interior Design Ideas

I have never been a huge fan of Spanish Homes until I saw this Modern take on Modern Spanish design. Beautiful arched black windows and the interior arches give this new-construction home a new meaning to Spanish architecture and, as always, Trickle Creek Homes knows how to set the bar high.

This Modern Spanish home is a “kick-your-shoes-off and get comfy” kind of house. The arch detailing gives it an old world feel while the modern windows keep it bright and airy. The kitchen is perfect for hosting dinner parties and the open floor plan flows beautifully, which is perfect for a family!

Get ready to fall in love with this new take on Modern Spanish home design. It will make you rethink your personal taste on architectural details.

Design house: This Spanish-style home beautifully blends rustic design with modern elements

The interior designers used a combination of restoration and renovation to breathe new life into this Spanish-style property.

  • Sign up to our newsletter Newsletter

Nestled in the historic covenant of Rancho Santa Fe, this Spanish Bungalow has all the essentials for ease and comfort. Honouring the classic Spanish architecture endogenous to Ranch Santa Fe, this original Holcombe home was restored to its former glory after a devastating flood.

When the homeowners, a retired couple, approached Intimate Living Interiors to redesign their home. It was in dire shape and needed emergency renovation. 'We worked to restore the property to its original state, which included a complete kitchen remodel and interior architectural and furniture update,' say the designers. This neutral palette is the perfect companion of a lifestyle of peace and joy.

THE PROPERTY

The owners wanted to stay true to the original architecture and construction of their home, which was built by Holcombe Homes. They are known for their early California-style homes that also blend styles from Mexico, North Africa, and the American Southwest. The designers chose to maintain the integrity of the original style while also incorporating modern elements for a complete refresh.

We talk to Intimate Living Interiors about the design house.

We wanted to respect this original design and maintain the integrity of the home, but also clean up and modernise the kitchen. This meant using lighter and brighter materials, a fresh coat of white paint throughout the entire house to brighten it up, and clean finishes paired with gorgeous wooden doors and traditional bronze accents within the house.

We also specified traditional Saltillo tiles on the floor, which run through the entire public living space, including the hallway, kitchen, wine room, laundry, living room, and dining room. Hand-painted Spanish-style tiles were used on the splashback in the kitchen that we juxtaposed with clean, soft Calacatta marble and floating wood shelves.

We wanted to infuse a soft, organic feel to the space that was inviting and cosy, yet clean and refined. Textures and neutrals worked well in the space, giving it a fresh look, but also grounding it with casual comfort. 'Simple yet significant' was our motto as we wanted the finishes and architecture to speak through the design. We enhanced the original design by incorporating moments that are inviting and beckon you to stay a while.

A Designer Brings Back Her 100-Year-Old Spanish Revival Home, Just in Time for the Hollywood Centennial

Interior Designer Elizabeth Law stays true to the home’s roots while infusing it with her own sense of style and life experiences.

Although today it’s easy to picture gorgeous homes dotting the scenery throughout the Hollywood Hills, there was a time when only a handful of homes had been built. Elizabeth Law of Elizabeth Law Design lives in one of those homes, originally constructed in 1923 just as the “Hollywoodland” sign was being put up.

In fact, Law has learned that this was only the third home built in “Hollywoodland” as it was called at the time.

“This home was part of the Hollywoodland development, which was advertised as ‘above the turmoil’ of the city, sort of a country-living locale complete with a barn, walking trails, and hidden stone staircases,” Law explains. One of the styles homeowners could choose was Spanish Revival, an aesthetic approach that this particular home continues to showcase to this day.

hollywood house tour elizabeth law

When Law first purchased the home, she saw the potential to bring it back to its 1920s heyday.

“As a designer, that era and style of house along with the restoration is my passion,” she says. “It is and was a work in progress.”

The updates that had been done in the home were completed in the 1980s and '90s, which is why Law has had to slowly “put the pieces back together,” as she describes it.

Law started with light fixtures and hardware and has focused mainly on the visuals. “The bones of the house have remained true, which was a huge part of the appeal while I was searching,” Law says, adding that she’s kept the original floors, windows, and arches, and even has the original blueprints hanging above her desk. She muses that in old homes like this, there seems to be the constant need to “replace” things, but she has opted to restore it instead.

hollywood house tour elizabeth law

The home has remained faithful to its Spanish Revival roots through its white, hand-troweled stucco and Mission Clay tile roof, entry tower, and French casement windows and doors as well as the awnings.

“The courtyard, while added much later, is very appropriate as well,” Law says.

Within the interior, the arches are classic to that time and style as well as the redwood support beams.

Step Inside This Hollywood Hills Home by Elizabeth Law

Law says that ever since she was a child, she’s been drawn to Mediterranean-style homes, even though she grew up on a farm in South Carolina.

“I was fortunate enough to have traveled as a child and was introduced at a young age to the beauty of tile, architecture, and the old world in general,” she says. “My parents have always been very adventurous and our homes have been full of collected and found things from around the world. I would say that my natural inclination is very in line with my home, and it shows.”

hollywood house tour elizabeth law

Shopping at Los Angeles stores like Obsolete and Galerie Half , along with Pasadena’s famous Rose Bowl flea market , Law has outfitted her home in pieces from the past, saying that the majority of her belongings are either vintage or antique.

“What I am the most excited about in this house are the light fixtures,” she says. “The first thing I bought for the house was the Art Deco fixture in the entry. The painted opalescent glass shades broke my heart and quickly found a place in my foyer. In the kitchen, there were a pair of chandeliers that wanted to be something they weren’t, so I found a pair of French 1930’s iron chandeliers that were the real deal. They have transformed the place completely.”

While still looking cool, classic, and modern, the home does have an air of timelessness, as if it’s now revived from its 1920s beginnings. You can almost see that “Hollywoodland” sign going up as you look out the window. And the parties here whisper of that glamorous time as well.

hollywood house tour elizabeth law

“My goal is to refresh and restore and let the house be its best original self,” Law says. “I know the previous owners were big entertainers, as am I. The house shines when its full of people, music on, all the windows and doors open, and the courtyard buzzing with conversation.”

The exposed beams are just one of its Mexi-Cali charms.

You can taste the salt in the air in this four-story Southern California gem. Its proximity to the sea is what drew the homeowner to the Spanish Colonial in the first place. “He’d always wanted a surf shack,” Jon De La Cruz says of his client, a Silicon Valley venture capitalist and avid surfer.

While far from a shack, the four-bedroom, four-bathroom, 6,000-square-foot home sits on a cliff overlooking the water just steps from the beach. It’s the perfect getaway to roll out of bed and hit the waves or to use as a relaxing yoga retreat, another one of the homeowners’ passions. When De La Cruz toured the place, he was immediately blown away by its beauty. The only real issue was that the property hadn’t been touched in almost 50 years and needed updating.

For De La Cruz, who previously worked with the homeowners on renovating their primary Northern California home, the challenge was making the beach house feel lighter, brighter, and cleaner without destroying any of the original architecture or removing any of the patina. “We liked the beachy casual, sort of weatherworn driftwood feeling of the place,” says the designer. “And we didn’t want to make it feel brand new. We wanted it to feel old.”

We really captured the feeling of the house, that old hacienda feeling, but we freshened it up.

To strike the right balance between authentic and contemporary, the designer and his team avoided structural changes (“It was really just a facelift and a furnish”). Instead, they mindfully modernized the home by installing new durable teak floors, plastering the exposed ceilings to brighten the rooms, and restoring and refreshing fitting and finishes.

In addition to the bones of the home, another key factor informed the design: the location. “It is pretty close to Mexico,” says De La Cruz. “You could smell that when you walked through it. So we didn’t want to harm any of that charm, because you couldn’t pay for that now in a new property.”

Living Room

“It was like a portfolio of an artist,” De La Cruz says of the whimsical series of paintings lining the living room wall, which he sourced locally from a vintage store. “I’m assuming an art student had done them. They were very gestural. I liked the pop of color, and it just felt very easy and unpretentious.” Another design element used for its breezy appeal was slipcovers. “They are very approachable and easy to clean.” Another vintage element is the Louis XVI–style limestone mantel , sourced from Pittet Architecturals .

One striking feature throughout the home is the exposed ceiling beams. “We put plaster in between them so that we could lighten it up and feel a little more finished,” says De La Cruz. This allowed the designer and his team to tuck in some new ceiling tracks and new low-voltage fixtures to light the place without having to cut holes everywhere.

When the family of five wants to plop down in front of the TV, they head in here, where the sofa has cushions upholstered in beach- and sand-friendly outdoor fabric. The Melissa Chandon painting on the wall echoes the view outside. “It’s like adding a window to the space,” says De La Cruz.

De La Cruz and his team did minimal work in the kitchen. They painted the upper cabinets and stained the bright red mahogany bottom ones, which, according to the designer, “were beautiful in the ’80s but not now.” Then they changed the backsplash to a hand-painted Mexican tile, put in new counters, added a butcher block on the island, installed new light fixtures, and called it a day.

“The dining room has a Murano chandelier that looks like a sea creature,” De La Cruz says. The table and chairs, from Lucca Antiques in Los Angeles, felt very Spanish but a little bit more modern, he adds. The reclaimed teak floors were sourced from IndoTeak .

Chandelier: vintage, from Pegaso Gallery . Shell lamps: Object Culture . Painting: Jeff Peters .

Breakfast Area

“I wanted to introduce some softness,” says De La Cruz of juxtaposing a wooden antique Spanish refectory table with the showstopping Holland & Sherry fabric he used to create a slipcover for the banquette in the breakfast area. He chose the spot for its versatility. “That’s a place where you can sit in the morning and look at a laptop and have a cup of coffee, have a sandwich in between surfing trips, even have an informal dinner or set out charcuterie boards and just graze while everyone’s enjoying the sunset,” he says. “It just gave the place a whole new vibe.”

The gorgeous floor tile came with the property. “They’re beautiful and they’re old and they’ve been waxed and polished and mopped for 50 years,” says De La Cruz. “That’s a patina that we couldn’t replace with new. So we left it alone and embraced it.”

mudroom

While the homeowner was pretty hands-off during the design process, one item on his wish list was a room for all his surfboards. “He needed a spot where he could store all his boards and be able to wax them and change and decompress after surfing or mentally prepare for that,” De La Cruz says. To create this man cave, the designer converted a stand-alone garage. “We put up a wetsuit drying rack, carpeted a little bit so it would feel good with bare feet, and then set up a little mini bar where he can store cool drinks.”

Primary Bedroom

“This was a very easy room,” Del La Cruz says of the main bedroom, which has a giant window overlooking the ocean. The designer didn’t want to distract from that feature, so he kept the furnishings sparse and the art minimal. “It’s just about the sounds and the smell of the ocean,” he says. Upgrades included new floors, plaster, and electrical. De La Cruz’s team designed the modern Moroccan-inspired headboard. “The architecture spoke to me in a way that it felt very Spanish, Mexican, but also kind of moorish,” the designer says. “So we played up a little bit of that Moroccan vibe, because that also felt very southern California.”

two beds in a room

The bunk beds—designed to be both kid and adult friendly with queen-size mattresses on the bottom bunks—can easily accommodate the homeowners’ children and their friends or office associates during company retreats. “We approached the room like a little micro hotel,” De La Cruz says. “We wanted everyone to have their own little area.” A closer look at the custom bunks reveals another cool design feature: the fluting on the wood is actually morse code for “surf.”

“I don't like to just pick pretty things,” De La Cruz says. “I like everything to have a meaning or a story so that when you invite people over, you have things to talk about, to share and to show why you chose an item.”

Bed scarves: Beach sarongs from Anthropologie . Carpet: Stark . Curtains: custom, in Zak + Fox fabric .

For the ground floor guest bedroom, De La Cruz decided to use a four-poster bed. “It just gave it a little more architecture. It made it feel a little more private,” he says.

desk and chair

A beautiful Spanish desk is accompanied by a traditional Mexican equipale chair. “They’re handcrafted and they're very comfortable and we just love them,” De La Cruz says. “The chairs along with the waxed saltillo tiles sprinkled throughout the hacienda are a quiet salute to Michael Taylor, one of my design heroes and the benchmark of California-Mexico coastal style.”

Primary Bathroom

house

“When you have a room like this, you have to leave it alone and not fight it,” De La Cruz says of the stunning primary bath. “My client’s wife didn’t care as much about what we did with this house. This was the house for him,” the designer explains. “But he said, ‘Let’s make it as comfortable for her as possible because I want her to come here and enjoy it’” Since she loves taking a bath, the designer created this serene spa moment complete with a sexy Waterworks tub. “Now she loves coming there and hosts her girlfriends on yoga retreats,” he says.

Bathtub: Waterworks . Faucet and fixtures: THG Paris . Rug: Pottery Barn . Table: vintage Sirmos Plaster Quarry. Curtains: custom, in Coraggio fabric .

office

It’s not all surf and sand. For those unavoidable Zoom meetings and conference calls, De La Cruz created a sophisticated office just off the primary bedroom on the fourth floor. “He is literally sitting on top of the ocean looking up at the whole coast of California, and there’s nothing you can’t accomplish sitting on that desk,” he says.

While all the other rooms of the house have beach-centric art, the office is adorned with a more businesslike abstract work in black-and-white. “We wanted him to have a very serious, doesn’t-look-like-I’m-at-my-surf-shack Zoom background,” De La Cruz says. “And we wanted it to look good at night in case he is taking a call in the evening.”

Art: Tom Hausken . Rug: Aga John . Side chairs: Ranier Daumiller from Obsolete . Desk: Lawson-Fenning .

House Beautiful: How did you save money/DIY/get crafty?

Jon De La Cruz: When it came time to furnish the project, we were able to tighten the budget with an aggressive mix of restored antique and vintage focal pieces, mid-level retail furnishings that were reupholstered or modified to stay on concept, and a scant few hero pieces that were benchmade for the project to maximize our trifecta: luxury comfort and functionality. Critical to this success was the freedom to exercise our own creative discretion without having to chase the client down for a line-for-line approval on each piece. They trusted us to assemble a beautiful beach house. Sure, there were a few minor adjustments we made after they acclimated to the house, but in the end it was far less time and money and headache with this approach.

This sunny retreat comes with all the charm and ease you’d expect from a Spanish-revival home in California. The only catch is that the two-story abode wasn’t built during the great rebirth of Mediterranean-inspired architecture in the early 20th century—it’s a product of a groovier era.

“When I saw the pictures online, I kind of stuck my nose up at it,” recalls Nancy Scheinholtz , the lead architect on the project. “‘It’s a house built in the ’70s, ’” she can almost hear herself scoff.

The home came with all the prerequisite quirks you’d expect from a 1970s home, but the bones were solid. “When I got there, I thought, ‘Oh, this is a really nice house.’ The rooms are spacious. The ceilings are high. There’s a courtyard in the middle,” she continues. “Even though it wasn’t built in 1926, it felt really good.”

Luckily, Scheinholtz was in good company. Interior designer Laura Blankstein also had big plans for the home (her blueprints included plenty of tilework, vintage rugs , and cool brass fixtures). “ I personally love a Spanish-style home, so it was easy for me to draw inspiration for this. The main goal was to make it feel sophisticated but lived-in—[the owners have] two small kids,” shares Blankstein.

The pop of turquoise on the coffered front door perfectly sums up the transformation: surprisingly effortless and filled with soul. Ahead, Blankstein and Scheinholtz walk us through this sun-drenched transformation.

Ditch the White Kitchen for Character

While the project boiled down to a full gut job, the soaring ceiling beams were one of a handful of original features that stayed. The exposed wood would eventually act as a cohesive tie between the living room and the kitchen—two spaces that had been previously separated by a laundry room. To visually connect the two rooms, Scheinholtz and her team exposed the peek in the kitchen and continued the beams throughout. “Even though they’re not quite adjacent to one another, they feel like it,” she shares. “There was a lot of hocus pocus going on in there.”

The charming addition was only one part of the equation. Blankstein convinced her clients to go against the grain with a rich charcoal hue for the custom cabinetry. “White kitchens are beautiful, but this house makes so much more of a statement,” says the designer. “Once we found this Spanish tile for the backsplash, I knew it was going to fall short with white cabinets.”

Ground High Ceilings with Rich Textures

Natural sunlight isn’t lost on the living room, thanks to a slew of generously sized windows and the pitched ceiling. The sheer height of the space is further exaggerated by the fireplace and larger-than-life lantern. “Originally, we had the light installed before we put in the furniture, so everyone was a little nervous. I was like, ‘You have to wait for the whole story. When you see it all together, it’s going to be your favorite part of the house,’” says Blankstein.

Scale and balance go hand in hand. Two woven rocking chairs by Masaya give guests a reason to come back down to earth and stay awhile. “Once we saw the colors and textures, it was a no-brainer. They had to go in the family room,” says the designer. Still, the greatest accessory isn’t a vintage rug or wooden vessels. “You can’t beat natural sunlight,” she says. “It just makes that room.”

Invest in Good Windows

A sun-drenched courtyard sits at the center of the home. The bonus outdoor space is now framed by brand-new, insulated windows—an impactful choice the clients made in the name of efficiency. “ Personally, I don’t know a good cheap window,” laughs Scheinholtz. While the home’s original windows were rare and, as Scheinholtz puts it, “hideously expensive,” the eco-friendly swap was worth the extra trouble.

“ Spend your money when it counts,” suggests Blankstein. “ If you don’t spend in the right places, you see it.” In addition to windows, the pair didn’t skimp on custom cabinetry, tile work, or light fixtures—high-impact moments that are bound to draw attention.

Let the Tile Run Wild

image

Nods to Benjamin Moore’s Stained Glass blue —the vibrant hue that punctuates the front door—lives on in the bathrooms. “When we were sourcing all the tile for this project, the clients were like, ‘Bring it on. We love the color. We love the pattern,’” shares Blankstein. An Ann  Sacks floor tile exudes strong Seville vibes in the master bath. Scheinholtz completed the scene with an arched shower door. “They didn’t want to do something that was generic.”

We’re definitely not in the 1970s anymore.

This Modern Spanish Revival: A Dream Home

Sacha Strebe is a former editorial director for MyDomaine and has been writing about home and interior design for eight years. She is currently the editorial director at Create & Cultivate.

Architecture forms the foundation or canvas for everything in a home's interior design process. When people reference a house having "good bones," this is what they mean, and this Spanish Revival home is full of them. Built in 1927, the house formed the ideal canvas for Shannon Wollack and Brittany Zwickl of California-based Studio Life.Style . Although the designer duo renovated the entire house ("almost every room down to the studs"), their goal was to keep the integrity of the iconic Spanish Revival architectural style intact.

Wollack and Zwickl pared down some of the heavy traditional Spanish elements to create a more updated and modern Spanish-style home. "We have a refined, yet approachable, style, and really try to stay true to the architecture of the home or space we are designing," says Zwickl. The dynamic pair's transformation of this outdated home is pretty spectacular.

Bold, Colorful Tile

To maintain the Spanish Revival style, Zwickl and Wollack ensured the entry looked the part, too. "We loved the idea of being immediately greeted with this beautiful tile at the entry," she says. "It is a bit unexpected to see a colored tile in an entry, and it makes a great impact."

This also meant keeping many of the home's original arches. "We left the front entry door and window arched, and added one to the transition from the living room to the dining room," says Zwickl. "We also added an arch above the primary bathroom vanity, and on the back patio."

Primary Bathroom

The term “Primary Bathroom” is now widely used to describe the largest bathroom in the home, as it better reflects the space’s purpose. Many realtors, architects, interior designers, and the Real Estate Standards Association have recognized the potentially discriminatory connotations in the term “Master.” Read more about our Diversity and Inclusion Pledge .

Worn and Aged

The dining room evokes an antique aesthetic, which is quite different from the rest of the home. "The homeowners asked to incorporate the vintage pieces from their travels," says Wollack. "The room has a worn, aged feel that works with the Spanish architecture of the home."

Original Arches

If there's one room in the house where the architecture is completely original to the home, it's the living room with the arched window. They also salvaged an original window from the front of the house and turned it into a mirror that is hung in this space.

Clean and Crisp

Staying true to their design aesthetic, Zwickl and Wollack wanted to keep most of the space "pretty clean and crisp, with touches of color via the tile and reclaimed wood."

Open Kitchen

The major renovations took place in the kitchen. Opening up the living room into the kitchen was important for the overall design of the home. "The kitchen has a very clean, fresh feel with touches of decorative elements, such as the statement marble , and the vintage lighting piece over the island," says Zwickl.

Marble Backsplash

Say hello to the marble backsplash of your dreams. The grey-tinted marble adds some contrast to the otherwise all-white kitchen.

Modern Meets Traditional

The primary bedroom is where you really see the merging of modern and traditional. The neutral tones and soft textures of the bed fuse effortlessly with the blue European floor-to-wall tiles of the complementary bathroom, ensuring an impactful and seamless appearance.

Wall-To-Floor Tile

The stunning primary bathroom tile is also a callback to the original design of the home. "A larger window in the shower and the addition of the decorative arch at the entrance of this bath helped to bring the other elements from the home all together," says Wollack.

Textured Wallpaper

Despite the small size of the powder room, Zwickl and Wollack wanted this space to have some major impact, so they paired a statement tile with a dark, textured wallpaper. "We love when each bath in a home tells its own story," says Zwickl.

Cement TIle

This house has three and a half bathrooms, so the duo wanted to ensure each made its own statement. The combination of the black shiplap and the cement tile incorporates a "great moody intensity."

Black Shiplap

Even the smallest of rooms were carefully considered. We love how much they experimented with darker wall colors despite the small space of this vanity.

Marble Shower

For this bathroom, they wanted to keep it really simple with an all-white motif and let the marble in the shower make the statement.

Indoor/Outdoor Living

Despite all the beautiful rooms in this Spanish Revival home, the designers' favorite thing about the space is the bi-fold doors that open to the charming backyard and pool. "It's really a quaint space, and when the doors are open, the indoor/outdoor really become one," says Wollack.

10 Spanish-Style Homes That Are Warm and Inviting

A Spanish-style home generally features stucco walls, a red terracotta roof, decorative wrought iron elements, arched windows or doorways, dark wood beams, and tiled designs. They can be single-story but also have multiple floors.

These homes often include detailed landscaping and feature courtyards or outdoor areas, seamlessly fusing their interiors and exteriors for entertaining and relaxing. Spanish-style homes perfectly combine traditional design with modern aesthetics.

To give you an inside look at Spanish-style homes and their main elements, we spoke with designers who weighed in on the common characteristics of this popular style.

  • Raymond Jimenez is the founder and creative director at Raymond Nicolas in Miami.
  • Allison Knizek the founder of Allison Knizek Design in Los Angeles.

Thoughtful Architectural Details

Spanish-style homes often feature stucco walls, terracotta roof tiles, and inner courtyards which were "designed originally to keep homes naturally cool," says designer Laura Roberts .

"Other details like wooden [support beams on] ceilings , doors, and windows, as well as ornamental ironwork, are found in Spanish-style homes," she adds.

Adaptable Exterior Designs

Even if you aren't constructing a home from scratch, there are plenty of ways to incorporate Spanish-style influences on the exterior and keep things modern.

"Neutral white or beige stucco on the exterior walls, highlighted with terracotta and/or patterned tiles around a window frame, on stair risers, or the walkway will bring a Spanish flair to any exterior," says Roberts.

Colorful Elements

Bring on the colorful touches when designing a Spanish-style home, says designer Raymond Jimenez . "Adapting a Spanish style to the exterior of your home boils down to a few very simple principles: You’re looking to embody a rich, timeless aesthetic, and you’re not afraid to experiment with color," he says.

These colors like terracottas, blues, yellows, white, black, and of course green are usually not synonymous with ‘timeless’ but when done in such a way, they evoke a very luxe and classic look.

Indoor-Outdoor Living

This modern Spanish-style home truly blends indoors and out, encouraging maximum relaxation.

"This style of architecture is very much laid-back and creates the feeling of always being on vacation," Jimenez says. "It inherently warms you up and calms you down."

Iron Accents

Waypointe Group

Iron detailing, as showcased above, is also commonplace when it comes to Spanish-style exteriors. "It can be used for gates, stair railings , or in Spanish-style exterior light fixtures," Roberts notes.

Designer Allison Knizek points out that touches of wrought iron such as a handrail or a Juliet balcony instantly evoke an old-world Spanish mood.

"Typically painted black, an updated take is to paint them a color, she says. "Same goes for wrought iron furniture—glossy color is an instant update."

Interior Elements

When it comes to modern Spanish-style interiors, Roberts says that details "like smooth plaster walls, arched cutouts between rooms, vibrant accents, and the use of linen in furniture and window treatments all contribute to a true Spanish look."

Lush Landscaping

Many Spanish-style homes boast impressive landscaping and outdoor spaces.

"Spanish-style homes must be surrounded by thick, lush greenery and landscapes to really make you feel like you are escaping into your own personal paradise," says Jimenez.

Tons of Terracotta

Marie Flanigan Interiors

If your home doesn't feature a signature red tiled roof, Knizek offers an innovative solution.

"A collection of terracotta pots against a bright white stucco wall does the trick," she says. "Add some vibrant pink bougainvillea and you instantly achieve that blinding, sun-kissed, Spanish hacienda look."

Beautiful Tiles

Allen Construction

Beautiful tile lines for this outdoor bench and similar designs can be incorporated indoors, too.

"Tile is the best way to infuse a little Spanish mood and decorative tiles are plentiful at the moment at every price point," Knizek says.

All the Arches

Curves and arches, like the ones seen here, are a common characteristic that Knizek incorporates into her spaces.

"I introduce arches or semicircles into every home I’m working on," she says. "A softly arched doorway can stand on its own especially if the door is painted an accent color to complement the room and surroundings."

What is the difference between Spanish-style homes and Mediterranean-style homes?

Spanish and Mediterranean homes have some common features such as ornate architectural elements. That said, Mediterranean-style homes and Spanish-style homes do have some differences, mainly relating to their exteriors.

Spanish-style homes have stucco walls, tile roofs, and bright tiles. Mediterranean homes, on the other hand, have plaster walls and red clay roof tiles. Mediterranean-style homes will typically have more than two stories and incorporate elements such as balconies.

Where did Spanish-style homes originate?

Spanish-style homes originated in 16th-century Spain, during Spain's colonization of the Americas. From there, the style began to become more prevalent in the 17th century, mainly in areas that shared similar climates to Spain such as modern-day Florida, California, Arizona, Texas, and Nevada.

What are the different styles of Spanish-style homes?

Spanish-style homes are known by several different names, such as Spanish Colonial Revival, Mission Revival, and more. The following are the most common types of Spanish-style homes in the U.S.:

  • Spanish Colonial Revival houses became popular in North America during the early 20th century, based on the Spanish Colonial style architecture that originated in Spain in the 1500s.
  • Mission Revival homes are typically found in California and the Southwest, a late 19th-century style built to emulate elements of Spanish missions that include features like arched entryways, stucco walls, tiled roofs, and bell towers.
  • Pueblo Revival (also called Santa Fe Style) is a 20th-century variation on 18th- and 19th-century Adobe-style houses that render the rounded forms of the original style using modern materials such as brick or concrete.
  • Spanish Eclectic is a blanket term for homes that incorporate various Spanish elements to create a modern mashup that can be applied to many of the Spanish-style homes found throughout the U.S. today.

There are various ways to modernize a Spanish-style home. For example, focusing on organic materials, incorporating textures, adding metal accents, and using earthy tones.

Most Spanish-style homes have barrel roof tiles made out of terracotta clay. When it comes to shape and design, barrel roof tiles are semi-cylindrical and are laid out in an interlocking pattern.

Benefits of a Spanish-style home include those of both design and function. Spanish-style houses have stunning architectural elements such as arched doorways, wrought iron accents, and colorful tiles. Functionally, Spanish-style homes can stay cool in warmer climates. The exterior is durable and low-maintenance, potentially meaning less costly repairs and updates.

Actor Chrissy Metz’s LA Hideaway Is a Creative Wonderland

When actor and singer Chrissy Metz first stepped into what is now her home, she just knew it was meant for her. “I remember going into the primary bathroom ,” the This Is Us alum says, “and they had these really beautiful ornate wood screens. I was like, ‘Yep, I want to live here.’”

In the competitive Los Angeles real estate market, Metz’s decisive moment—and offer—came just four hours after the listing had gone live. For the Emmy-nominated talent, whose decision-making typically wavers between uncertainty and conviction, this was an unequivocal yes. As Metz explains, “For me, it’s either, ‘Well, I don’t know,’ or I’m like, ‘Yes.’ And so if I do ever question anything, it really means no.”

The 5,700-square-foot Spanish Colonial Revival–style residence, located in a lush, gated community, represented more than just increased space and security for Metz. (Metz had experienced a break-in at her prior home.) It was kismet: As she puts it, the place was just “very intentional and very beautiful,” a quality evident in every detail. “Even the archways have vents that are arched,” Metz observes. “I think it’s different because the owner was the builder, and when the builder actually lives in the house, where there’s care that’s taken—it’s just very deliberate and purposeful.”

The living room features a pair of Highgate sofas by Una Malan , as well as a pair of Ojai lounge chairs by Lawson Fenning . The Lupa ottoman, complete with feet, is by Martin & Brockett .

Krista Schrock and David John Dick of AD PRO Directory firm DISC Interiors were tasked with transforming Metz’s new space into a place that feels like home. Their partnership began unexpectedly—through the team’s design consultation website. “I thought that’s what I was doing [by giving them a call],” Metz says of what she thought would be a quick conversation. “And they’re like, ‘Oh, we thought you just wanted a consult.’ And I [said], ‘Oh, no, no, I need you to do my whole house.’”

What followed was a design process conducted largely via Zoom, with Metz as an engaged client. “I didn’t know how particular I was until we were going through it,” she admits, describing, for instance, her Princess and the Pea –like search for the ideal dining chair. “I must have sat on, I don’t know, 20 different dining room chairs. The chairs have to be comfortable, but your feet have to touch the ground, but the back has to be…I’m like, ‘Chrissy, just pick a chair.’”

Schrock and Dick skillfully incorporated Metz’s preference for color and jewel tones (more than they traditionally would use), creating a palette that Schrock describes as both “still grounded and very earthy, but still one that gave her the color.” Schrock adds, “The whole house is very calming. And also, it reflects her and her sensibility.” The result is a home that feels both refined and welcoming, a balance Metz articulates: “I want it to feel warm and cozy and also lived in…. I didn’t want it to be precious.”

Metz in her glam room. The actor loves this wallpaper, Future by Wallpaper Direct , because the pattern reminds her of how she’s learned to hold her hand on red carpets.

This approach is evident throughout the house from the sweet and whimsical glam room to the plush and inviting music room. A creative room also serves as Metz’s collaboration space. “I had a shaman come and sort of energetically clear the house, and she was telling me that the back room is a creative space, so we made it the writing room,” Metz explains. (Metz splits her time between LA and Nashville, where she is developing a one-woman show.)

For Metz, whose childhood upbringing was modest, she says, this house signifies more than just its aesthetic beauty. “To have a home that I can invite people to and entertain is so important to me,” the actor confides, adding that she always invites people over when she’s in town. “I want to entertain because I’m the happiest around my friends and obviously my family.” The front sitting room, for example, which doubles as a game room, is the scene of many convivial game nights.

Other favorite spots include the kitchen (“I like to bake more than cook”) and the serene bedroom, which Metz describes as “very peaceful,” with windows that look out to the pool, the mountains, and the canyon. She also loves her comfortable sectional in the family room. “I often fall asleep on it. I’m like, ‘Chrissy, go upstairs,’” she laughs.

For Metz, the house does represent many dreams realized, however. “I grew up in a house so very small that it didn’t even fit a dining table,” she says joyfully. “I can’t even believe I have a glam room. I used to share a bathroom with five people. What in the world is my life?”

Moscow welcomes the initiatives of Brasilia and Beijing to settle the Ukrainian crisis, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said in an interview with RT television.

"We welcome the Brazil-China consensus - a well-known initiative consisting of six points," the official said.

"I think this initiative has ever more support in the Global South. And this meeting of high representatives is the latest example of how the Global South and people who really want to consistently move toward a political settlement are finding good reasons to actively consider this idea."

"I will tell you that Russia has always expressed its readiness to resume negotiations," he went on to say.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and the Brazilian president’s foreign policy advisor, Celso Amorim, met on May 23 and issued a joint statement saying that the only way to resolve the conflict in Ukraine is through dialogue and negotiations.
