It would appear that Tiger’s highly publicized swing changes have pervaded EA’s golf sim as well. Tiger 06 for 360 is a hurried, stripped-down cut-and-paste between current-gen and next-gen consoles.

The courses look cleaner and more detailed than the current gen editions - trees embrace gentle winds, single blades of grass glimmer in the sunlight, characters stand knee high in heavy rough and sparse handfuls of spectators stare off at one another (you can peg them with the ball too). And the golfers, while appearing as if they've been cast in shiny clay, do look notably better - though this makes their less-realistic animations appear abnormally stiff.

Then comes the triple bogey. Unfortunately, next-gen Tiger cuts the courses on the tour to six: Pebble Beach, Pinehurst No. 2, Riviera Country Club, TPC at Sawgrass, Carnoustie and Turnberry. That's fewer than half the number of courses rendered on the current-gen and PC versions. Plus, many of them aren't even unlocked until you play hours banging through tedious skill tests and redundant tournaments.

Game modes suffer a similar hell-pruning. Tiger 360 loses the wonky Career mode in which his uncanny composure and air-mail tee shots are complimented by the ability to travel through time - and goofy though it was, it's a big absence. Many other modes are absent too.

What you’re left with is a bare-bones experience with little single-player action beyond skill challenges and making the PGA Tour. Multiplayer is great with a foursome, but we’d like to play a wider variety of courses instead of betting on the same acreage over and over again.

Tiger ’s gameplay itself has changed little from the current-gen versions, and is geared more toward the sim angle than past versions. No longer can you sit skunk drunk on the couch and throw lawn darts at the green. If you pull the analog stick to the side during your backswing or tilt it off the straight and narrow during your follow-through, your ball will scream off to the side and find the rough. This is even tougher if you're hammering the shoulder button to power up your shot.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 06 review: Tiger Woods PGA Tour 06

What it lacks in features and courses, Tiger almost makes up for in pure challenge.

The Xbox 360 version of Tiger Woods PGA Tour 06 features a picture of a dead-serious Tiger, his right arm raised in defiant celebration. The expression on his face says he's all business and very little fuss. That's also an accurate description of the game this photo appears on. While Tiger Woods PGA Tour 06 for Xbox 360 is missing many of the features that round out the game on current-gen platforms and the PC, what remains is a challenging, enjoyable game of golf that, in some ways, exceeds the more fleshed-out versions.

tiger woods pga tour 06 xbox 360

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 06

The bottom line.

The dual-analog swing system from the PS2 and Xbox versions is still used here. The left analog controls your backswing, while the right analog stick is used to influence the spin and fade or draw of the ball when it's struck. The shape stick works just as promised, and there seems to be more of an emphasis on its use here on the 360. Perhaps it's a function of the courses found in the game -- the tight, hazardous confines of TPC at Sawgrass comes immediately to mind -- but applying spin to the ball has never seemed more important than it is here.

tiger woods pga tour 06 xbox 360

Though swinging the club is controlled the same way, two significant changes keep things feeling fresh. The first is that the sensitivity of the left stick seems to have been upped considerably this time around, meaning it's more difficult to nail a straight shot. If you aren't mindful of your swing, you can shank a ball to the left or right with relative ease. Things get more complex when you compound that with the second control tweak: The power-boost and spin-boost controls have been assigned to the left button on the 360 controller. As a result, maintaining a disciplined, solid backswing with the left analog while rapidly boosting on the left button is very difficult. It took us aback at first, and we shanked plenty of balls into the woods as we got used to it. Eventually we modified our virtual swing by using our right hand to boost on the left button, which freed our left hand up to concentrate on the backswing and follow-through. Just like our real-life golf swing, it doesn't look very good, but it works.

We're big fans of this subtle but effective control tweak. Challenge in the game of golf comes from every angle -- from the course itself, from the competitors playing against you, and yes, from your constant struggles with your own swing. The added sensitivity of the left analog stick coupled with the power-boost switch means that even routine shots have a chance -- however slight -- of going awry. And that feels more like golf to us than Tiger Woods for consoles has in a long time.

The putting controls are unchanged from the console versions of Tiger 06, and as a result, judging distance is still too easy. Judging the break seems tougher this go-around, however. You can still use the ideal-putt cam to pick your ideal approach angle (but why can't you turn this option off in online matches?), but putting doesn't seem to be as automatic a process as on current-gen systems. The biggest challenge we had with putting in Tiger 06 was spotting the hole on non-HDTV setups--the cup itself seems to get obscured a bit on standard televisions.

The core of Tiger 06's single-player game is the career mode. There's no time-travel theme such as that found on the PS2 or Xbox, nor are there the weekend foursomes with your virtual buddies like in the PC game. Instead, there's a much more straightforward approach that has you create a golfer with the familiar gameface system, then launch into a number of skills challenges that will test different aspects of your game, from putting to playing out of the traps. That probably sounds familiar if you've played Tiger before, but where things differ this time around is in the increased difficulty of these challenges. Certainly, some of them you can beat in one or two tries -- putting challenges and other short-game tests being two examples. But some of the long-drive competitions can only be passed after you've jacked up your power attributes appropriately.   Indeed, getting through the four-day Q School tournament and earning your PGA Tour card in the process can be a grueling trial (though you can save your game after each tournament day is complete, which will let you start over if you don't like how your day is going). Your opponents won't give an inch, and you can expect that same level of challenge to continue when you move on to the PGA Tour proper and start competing in weekly events.

tiger woods pga tour 06 xbox 360

So, there's a good amount of challenge to be found in Tiger 06. Unfortunately, that challenge will only take place on a mere six courses -- Riviera Country Club, Pinehurst No. 2, TPC at Sawgrass, Carnoustie, Turnberry's Alisa Course, and, of course, the ever-present Pebble Beach. When compared to Tiger 06 for the Xbox, which featured a full 14 courses (when you count the fantasy courses), this represents the most significant gap between the current-gen and next-gen versions of the game, and for most players will likely be the deal breaker when deciding whether to buy the game. In that same vein, there's also less stuff to spend your tour earnings on in the PGA Tour shop than before. If sheer quantity of courses is your thing, Tiger 06 for the 360 is tough to recommend. On the positive side, the courses that are in the game are diverse and challenging, and they also happen to look great.

That look comes thanks to a sense of depth and detail that simply isn't possible on the PS2 or Xbox. The biggest difference is the quality of lighting and shadows. Player models in Tiger Woods are hit or miss. Some, like Tiger himself, are amazingly lifelike, with bulging veins in their forearms and spot-on facial modeling that makes the virtual golfer nearly indistinguishable from the real thing. Others, such as John Daly, don't fare nearly as well and look more like vaguely upgraded PS2 or Xbox models. The game also has periodic frame rate issues, often during the backswing, which can affect the swing's delicate timing.

Online play in Tiger includes your standard quick-play and custom-match filters. You can create matches based on a number of different game types -- stroke, match, skins, best ball, four ball, alternate shot, and three-hole minigames. The game keeps track of your online stats and has weekly overall leaderboards for stroke and match play, as well as the minigames. There are also daily tournaments to take part in, and the game highlights weekly money winners, golfers of the week, and tourney winners.

In the end, many consumers will judge Tiger 06 by what it lacks -- courses, game modes, and extras -- and these are fair criticisms. What it doesn't lack, however, is challenge, and a feeling that things could slip out from under your control at any moment -- something you couldn't really find on the current-gen versions of the game.

The definitive ranking of every Tiger Woods PGA Tour video game

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2020/05/200513-tiger-2004-2.png

Last August, the newest golf video game—PGA Tour 2K21—was released to the public, quickly becoming a hit among golf fans. While there had been a number of golf games released since the final iteration of the Tiger Woods video game series (in 2014), this was the first one that felt like a must-have, even without Woods' name on the box.

Seven months later, it was announced that Woods will in fact be back on the box. The 15-time major champion has inked a long-term deal with 2K , meaning he'll be returning to a console near you in the future. Rejoice, Cyber Tiger is back.

Of course, this news comes not long after Woods was in a single-car accident, one that has had him hospitalized ever since. Hopefully, Woods makes a full recovery and returns to the real course.

In the mean time, fans might get to relive their Tiger Woods glory days with Woods on an Xbox or Playstation again soon. That got us feeling nostalgic, so naturally we ranked all 16 iterations of the Tiger Woods franchise.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2020/05/200513-tiger-2006.png

2006 was a very weird year for all the EA Sports games. It was basically a lame duck year, as Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 were now the systems to have. That left ’ 06 games in limbo for PS2 owners. Essentially, they were the same game as the year before with a couple of dumb, shiny new features. This was definitely the case for the “Tiger Woods” series as well. ’ 06 was as forgettable as they come.

Not all that different from 1999, which we’ll get to in a bit.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2020/05/200513-tiger-2002.png

The first year of the analog stick swing. Literally changed the game.

Honestly, 2003 was great, but what came after it makes its existence almost irrelevant.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2020/05/200513-tiger-2011.png

One of the big selling points for 2011 was the Ryder Cup mode, which flat out stunk. If you’re going to introduce an event like that into the game, one people hold very near and dear to their hearts, you’ve got to do it right. Funny enough, they introduced a pretty big event in the 2012 version of the game and nailed it.

This is purely out of respect for the franchise. Back to where it all began. Graphics? Terrible. Gameplay? Pretty good for PS1 in 1999! After years and years of playing with the analog stick, I can’t imagine playing a golf game where you had to time a meter like you’re kicking a field goal in Madden, but that’s the way it was. Kinda cool that it was exactly Tiger’s swing, but it didn’t feel like you were controlling him. Like I said, this is out of respect. By the way, something I just learned in doing research for this ranking was that there was an “Easter Egg” in the first 100,000 pressings of the game that played “Jesus vs. Santa,” a lost episode of South Park, which is on YouTube . I’m not kidding.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2020/05/200513-tiger-2001.png

The first “Tiger Woods” to be on PS2 had strong graphics and looked much more like the video games of today, as opposed to the Golden Tee-esque versions of 1999 and 2000. But this game still had the whack swing meter.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2020/05/200513-tiger-2009.png

I think the only thing separating ’ 09 from ’ 08 was Hank Haney being your coach in the game. The hell was that about?

Might as well just lump 2008 and 2009 together. Kind of forgotten years in the series in my opinion. The big jump on the new systems came in 2010. Although, none of the newest games have the Jesus shot:

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2020/05/200513-tiger-2007.png

This year was a massive step forward for the game in graphics and presentation, which makes sense given it was on the new systems. The real fun, however, was on the PS2 version, which I still own. There was a great team mode and some fun fantasy courses (I believe there was a course in Central Park in this game). But the best part was the addition of Riviera, a course I must have played a thousand times in that game. I guess that means I was “woke” before “woke” even existed, which is an elite level of woke-ness.

2010 was a hit for many reasons, and I think the Nintendo Wii version was the most popular of the bunch this year. But I had it for Xbox 360 and it was just delightful. First off, it was perhaps the best cover of the series, featuring Tiger’s famous, double-fisted U.S. Open celebration at Torrey Pines. That was a particularly nice touch because this was also the first year the U.S. Open was in the game, which coincided with the year it was back at Pebble Beach. Most importantly, this was Anthony Kim’s video-game debut, which was such a monumental occasion that there’s video of Tiger talking up Kim in one of the game ’ s trailers. This was probably the first time in the game’s history that I popped in the disc for the first time and played with someone other than Tiger, that someone being Kim.

Considering it wasn’t all that different from ’ 12, ’ 13 probably shouldn’t be this high, but sometimes more of the same is good. ’ 13 continued to focus on Augusta/The Masters, and the collector’s edition of the game even had a green-jacket ceremony. The two best additions to the game were Rory McIlroy, who was somehow left out of 2012 after being in 2010 and 2011, and Dustin Johnson. They both returned in ’ 13 and ’ 14 and were easily the second- and third-best players in the game behind TW. ’ 13 was the last year of Adam Scott and Justin Rose, who were each staples in the franchise for years. Course-wise, ’ 13 also made some great adds in Royal County Down, Royal Birkdale, The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island, Crooked Stick and PGA National.

Some may be scoffing at this being No. 4, which is fair. The first year of Augusta National and a “ Road to the Masters ” career mode in a video game should be worthy of No. 1, but the game only got better in its final two installments. With the introduction of Augusta also came the familiar voice of Jim Nantz, which no one complained about. ’ 12 also featured “The Caddie Experience,” which was cool for all of the first 10 minutes until it became redundant. New golfers included Rickie Fowler, Henrik Stenson, the Molinari brothers, Zach Johnson and Bubba Watson. Sadly, this was the final year of Anthony Kim in the series. Pour one out, folks.

While the year we still haven’t gotten to is the game’s peak, 2005 is actually my favorite year of “Tiger Woods.” Gameplay was similar to the previous year, but there were welcome additions like the ability to adjust your stance/ball position to hit it higher or lower, and the ability to hit a punch and flop shot as well as chips and pitches. Putting was the same, with the same caddie advice and a back and through stroke once you read the putt, but this was the first year of “Tiger Vision,” which you got to use a handful of times per round with the use of the R1 button. By holding it down, your player would zoom in via a narrow cone (just like Tiger!) and see exactly where to aim the putt, turning a sure three-putt into a 76-foot eagle conversion.

Where this game separated itself was the legend mode, which allowed you to unlock Jack Nicklaus, Seve Ballesteros, Gary Player, Arnold Palmer, Ben Hogan and, of course, “Sunday” Tiger Woods. Trying to unlock all those greats, a sick soundtrack, and new courses like Harbour Town, Colonial, Sherwood, Greek Isles (fantasy course) and, my personal favorite, Couer d’Alene, where I once shot 48 with “Sunday” Tiger and … lost to a buddy of mine who shot 46 with Hogan, had me glued to this game for hours on end.

The last “Tiger Woods” game was, in my opinion, the best of the Xbox 360 era, though I won’t fault any ’ 12 or ’ 13 truthers for wanting those higher on this list. All three had Augusta National, which is enough to put them all in a tie for second, but ’ 14, the historic edition specifically, just did it for me. You could play Augusta National in 1934, reverse routing and all. New courses included Muirfield Village, Royal Troon and Oak Hill. In a brilliant nostalgia play, the game also brought back unlockable legends: Jack Nicklaus, Seve Ballesteros, Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, Lee Trevino and Sam Snead. There were even different versions of them, like an early 1960s version Jack Nicklaus and a late 1970s Jack Nicklaus, and you could compete as all of them or against them in reenactments of their greatest career moments. The game’s best feature, however, was having all four major championships in career mode. Much like Michael Strahan, the “Tiger Woods” video game went out on top with the ’ 14 version.

I could just write “DMX. That is all” and drop the mic, but that wouldn’t fully describe this game’s GOATness. Everything about it was perfect right from the “Up in here” opening montage. There were 20 courses, the most in a Tiger Woods game to that point, including new additions like Bethpage Black and Sahalee, as well six fantasy courses (Black Rock Cove was a personal fave). 2004 also featured “Game Face,” which allowed you to create your player’s face to your exact liking, wrinkles and all. The gameplay wasn’t all that different from 2003, but it didn’t need to be. Once the analog stick was introduced, the gameplay was pretty much perfect in the PS2 era. But 2004 was its peak.
