Cyndi Lauper announces farewell tour, documentary: 'Right now this is the best I can be'

tour 4 lettres

In her fifth decade of fame, Cyndi Lauper is finding that life is still a succession of hellos and goodbyes.

Her complex history – from her multicultural upbringing in Brooklyn and Queens to her abusive stepfather to her pre-solo-career success with Blue Angel – is examined in the documentary “Let the Canary Sing,” arriving on Paramount+ June 4.

For many, it will be an illuminating introduction to a backstory far deeper than casual fans would expect of the zany, flame-haired “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” singer. There are plenty of smiles, too, as Lauper recalls an early job as a secretary (“I’d fall asleep reading the mail”) and landing on Tipper Gore’s infamous “Filthy Fifteen” song list for the taboo-at-the-time “She Bop.”

But Lauper, soon to be 71, is also realistic about the sands of time and on Oct. 18 will embark on a 23-date farewell arena tour, including her first headlining show at Madison Square Garden in her native New York on Oct. 30. A ticket presale begins June 4 with the general on sale starting June 7 at 10 a.m. local time.

“It was all like a perfect storm,” Lauper tells us.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

In “Let the Canary Sing,” directed by Alison Ellwood (“Laurel Canyon,” “The Go-Go’s” ) and named for a comment made in a judicial ruling in her favor during a long-ago court case with a former manager, Lauper’s varied career (remember the wrestling era?) is presented briskly and colorfully.

Lauper also remains committed to her philanthropic work with her True Colors United foundation, which assists homeless LGBTQ+ youth, and her more recently established Girls Just Want to Have Fundamental Rights fund to benefit women’s rights and reproductive health .

The always-loquacious, ever-forthright Lauper checked in recently to talk about plans for her final tour, why she finally agreed to a documentary, the status of “Working Girl” on Broadway, and why she doesn’t listen to music at home.

More: The Beatles' 'Love' closes July 6. Why Ringo Starr says 'it’s worth seeing' while you can

Question: So you’re really saying farewell to touring. Why was this the right time?

Answer: Because right now this is the best I can be. It’s an arena tour, which I haven’t done in a long time. I just want to thank everybody, say goodbye, celebrate with fans that have been so loyal and sweet and were there for every crazy-ass concert or thing that I did, and I’m excited about doing it. I don’t think physically in another five years I will be as good, but now I can do it, you know?

If this is being billed as a goodbye, what are you thinking as far as the setup of the show and the set list?

I’m going to include a piece of everything – (songs from) Blue Angel, “Shine” – and combine art and moving visuals, use a lot of color and design. I haven’t had a fun tour since ’84, so now it will be the ‘24 fun tour!

I love the documentary footage of you on tour in the ‘80s, flying over the crowd in a garbage can like in the (live) video for “Money Changes Everything.”

I asked for a cherry picker and they gave me a garbage pail! I thought it was on a pulley system, but it was 10 men pulling me. They had me sign my will before (going up). I don’t want any more garbage cans. I want more class.

More: Adam Lambert talks Pride, announces new EP 'Afters'

For years you’d been reluctant to do a documentary. What changed?

A lot of people had come to me before and said "Let’s do a documentary," and I thought: "Wait, I’m still here. I’m not dead." And people said, "You should do it while you’re here so you can get it right." So I figured OK. I had been watching all these documentaries during COVID and I saw “Laurel Canyon” and I was really moved. I thought, she did a documentary but she’s a freakin’ filmmaker and she can tell a story. So when people started again on a documentary for me, I was like, you know, this woman Alison looks like a real filmmaker and I think she would tell a truthful story.

A lot of music documentaries lately seem to be multi-part and many hours, but yours in an efficient 90 minutes. Did you specifically want it to be easily digestible? Listen, it’s not my whole entire life; it’s just a time period. It’s good that Alison didn’t make it 2Âœ hours. Do you really need to see me that much? I’m excited because they’re going to show (the film) at the (TCL) Chinese Theatre (June 4) and come on, I get to do the handprints. It’s so kitsch, I love it.

Your sister Ellen says in the documentary that singing is like your church. Do you still feel that way? Yeah, it has to be. I start to get bogged down and (need to) go back to the source, which is a spiritual source. I have to do that or I can’t sing. I always ask, "What is my highest purpose?" when I’m singing because that’s the most important thing. The fact that I was given that ability – that was a gift. It saved my life , and when you don’t feel so great, singing is fantastic.

Do you sing a lot when you’re not performing?

Not since the whole (home) stereo thing went kaput. I don’t sing around the house or listen to music. I don’t like listening on the computer. I think it sucks. It’s not like it used to be having the big stereo console in your living room and everybody laughing and singing and dancing.

You’ve been involved with turning “Working Girl” into a musical since 2016 and certainly put in your time with your Tony-winning "Kinky Boots" in 2013 . Do you find the pace of Broadway frustrating? Now I can say that in 2025 we will be out of town and in 2026 we will come to Broadway . (The pace) is a little frustrating. When you do an album you have a budget, you’re working, you finish it. Everyone is working on the same thing. On Broadway, it’s everybody trying to make a living, and if you’re a creative, you don’t get paid (until the show is in rehearsals) and then directors don’t get paid until they actually direct. It’s a whole different thing.

How are things going from the music standpoint?

This story takes places in the ‘80s, so easy-peasy, right? I brought (longtime collaborator and founder of The Hooters) Rob Hyman in because for a moment we were the ‘80s . I called on Salt from Salt-N-Pepa to write something, too. You really just want to get it right.

NEW YORK (AP) — Jennifer Lopez has canceled her 2024 North American tour, representatives for Live Nation confirmed to The Associated Press.

“Jennifer is taking time off to be with her children, family and close friends,” they said in a statement.

The tour was to be her first in five years, in support of her first solo album in a decade, “This Is Me... Now” and its companion film .

The tour was scheduled to kick off on June 26 in Orlando, Florida, and conclude in Houston on Aug. 31. Live Nation shared that attendees who purchased tickets through Ticketmaster will be automatically refunded.

Lopez offered her own statement to fans on her OntheJLo website and newsletter, writing, “I am completely heartsick and devastated about letting you down. Please know that I wouldn’t do this if I didn’t feel that it was absolutely necessary.”

She continued: “I promise I will make it up to you and we will all be together again. I love you all so much. Until next time
”

“This Is Me... Now” was released early this year, 20 years after her hit album, “This Is Me... Then.” Lopez told the AP that the new album was a “miracle” and “a second chance. And I’d love to capture this moment in time the way that album captured that moment in time.”

The Grand Tour star forced to axe his own TV show after 4 years

Richard Hammond, Jeremy Clarkson and James May

James May has become the victim of his own success and has been forced to axe his TV show.

In Oh Cook! James documented his journey as his cooking skills went from abysmal to satisfactory, and finally, pretty damn good.

The two series of the Amazon Prime Video show have made the The Grand Tour star an accomplished cook in four short years.

The whole concept of Oh Cook!, which was a play on his famous catchphrase – Oh c**k, was James, 61, receiving tutition as he is hopeless with an oven.

At first, he tried to get a grip on the basics including lasagne, fish pie, and a full Sunday roast for the whole crew’s lunch was his final hurdle in the first offering. Having gained his confidence in the kitchen, for the second season he tried his hand at Japanese food, vegan delights, and even made dishes for a 70s themed-party.

Off the back of the programme, the TV star even released a cookbook, which has become a best-seller.

James May with a lasagne

‘It was a totally fresh concept that viewers lapped up, as usually cooking series are presented by professional chefs,’ a source told The Sun .

‘But after two seasons, James is now quite a good cook, so it’s not a gag he can continue to flog.’

While he may be hanging up his chef hat on TV, it’s not the end of the road with Amazon as he will continue to explore the globe in travelogue James May: Our Main in
He’s already embraced local culture in Japan, Italy and India, and the world is quite literally his Oyster with Amazon budget.

Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond.

Of course, there’s the bread and butter – The Grand Tour, which he presents with Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond.

The former Top Gear hosts have starred on the motoring show since 2016, and their special in Zimbawe is set to air towards the end of this year.

The series will end after the conclusion of the fifth series , but the trio, who’ve worked together since 2002 could be back together once more.

‘I wouldn’t rule it out,’ said James. Although, he quickly added: ‘But you do have to bear in mind that we’re all getting on a bit.’

Metro.co.uk contacted Amazon and James May’s representatives for comment.

Olympic Golf Rankings update: Collin Morikawa continues late surge to Le Golf National

Olympic Golf

Change Text Size

With under two weeks remaining – including the upcoming U.S. Open – until the deadline to finalize the field in the men’s Olympic golf competition, no player has taken advantage of a late surge more than American Collin Morikawa.

After a series of less-than-stellar performances (by his standards) to start the year caused a drop to No. 20 in the Official World Golf Ranking, Morikawa finished T3 at the Masters Tournament to jumpstart a stretch of four top-10 finishes in five events. Over the past two weeks, Morikawa has finished T4 at the PGA Championship and fourth at the Charles Schwab Challenge. The hot stretch has moved him up to ninth in the world, surpassing Patrick Cantlay and Max Homa to become the No. 4-ranked American in the world. Countries can only have more than two representatives if they have more than two within the top 15 of the Olympic Golf Ranking (OGR) with a maximum of four players, making the fourth position amongst Americans a coveted one.

Collin Morikawa chips in for birdie at PGA Championship

After bursting onto the scene as a rookie in 2019 and into the 2020 season, Morikawa won the 2020 PGA Championship and 2021 Open Championship to solidify himself as one of the top players in the game. He entered the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 as the highest-ranked player in the field and just missed out on a podium performance, falling in a seven-man playoff for the Bronze medal to C.T. Pan.

Now he's charging toward an opportunity to tee it up at Le Golf National in Paris..

“I knew -- let's call it two, three months ago where I stood, and I knew I had to start playing some good golf and we've played some good golf to put myself in contention,” Morikawa said. “So at the end of the day, these next two weeks are going to be big and I know what's at stake.”

Elsewhere in the OGR, Austria’s Bernd Wiesberger has leaped into the top-60, the threshold needed to qualify for the men’s competition, after a T2 finish in the DP World Tour’s European Open last week. Wiesberger, who finished T11 eight years ago at the 2016 Rio Olympics, is now likely to join countryman Sepp Straka in representing Austria in Paris later this summer.

With less than two weeks on the calendar prior to the cutoff, all eyes will be on finishes at major events such as the Memorial Tournament, the Volvo Car Scandinavian Mixed and the U.S. Open.

Yuka Saso soars into top 15 after winning the U.S. Women’s Open presented by Ally

After a tough test toppled the major championship dreams of the world’s top talent at Lancaster Country Club, it was ultimately Yuka Saso who was left standing on Sunday in Pennsylvania, victorious once again at the U.S. Women’s Open presented by Ally.

Saso won by three shots over Hinako Shibuno en route to claiming her second U.S. Women’s Open title, and the victory vaulted her up in both the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings and Olympic Golf Ranking. After missing the cut at the Mizuho Americas Open, the 22-year-old came to the second major championship of the 2024 LPGA Tour season ranked 30th in the world and wasn’t yet qualified to represent Japan at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Her second LPGA Tour title sent Saso soaring into the top 15 in the Rolex Rankings to No. 6 in the world, having knocked out Miyu Yamashita to claim a spot in the field at Le Golf National with three weeks left to qualify. Saso is now the highest-ranked Japanese player in the world and the Olympic Golf Ranking, sitting ahead of Nasa Hataoka, who is 17th in the standings.

The 2024 Olympics would mark Saso’s second time competing in the Games, as she represented the Philippines in 2021 in Tokyo, but it’s likely to be her first time playing for Japan, as Saso elected to adopt Japanese citizenship in 2021 following the Olympics.

Other notable movements in the Olympic Golf Ranking involved players from New Zealand, Chinese Taipei, Ecuador and Norway. Momoka Koburi of New Zealand has replaced her fellow countrywoman, Fiona Xu, who won the Copper Rock Championship earlier this year on the Epson Tour, in the top 60.

Chinese Taipei native Wei-Ling Hsu’s top-25 finish at the U.S. Women’s Open has moved her inside the top 60 in the Olympic Golf Ranking, bumping out Chia Yen Wu for the second available spot.

Additionally, Megan Khang has fallen out of the top 15, leaving the United States with just three representatives – Nelly Korda, Lilia Vu and Rose Zhang. Khang was replaced by Daniela Darquea of Ecuador, who currently holds the 59th position in the Olympic Golf Ranking.

The U.S. is one of four countries with two or more representatives in the top 15 at the moment, joined by the People’s Republic of China, who have Ruoning Yin and Xiyu Lin in the top 15; Australia, who have major champions Hannah Green and Minjee Lee currently qualified; and the Republic of Korea, represented by Jin Young Ko and Hyo Joo Kim.

The qualification period for the women’s golf competition at the 2024 Paris Olympics ends on June 24 following the conclusion of the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship at Sahalee Country Club.

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler has complete control of the Memorial, despite wild winds

Scottie Scheffler has once again showed why he is the best player in the world, as he holds the 36-hole lead at the Memorial.

Scottie Scheffler, PGA Tour, the Memorial

Scottie Scheffler never ceases to amaze.

On a blustery day that made PGA Tour players look foolish, Scheffler made things look easy. He paraded around Muirfield Village, making four birdies and a brilliant eagle on the par-5 15th to card a 4-under 68 at the Memorial Tournament .

“Around this golf course, especially when the winds are up, just because have you so many trees that block it and when it’s gusty, it can be really challenging and start blowing from directions where it’s not quite supposed to at times,” Scheffler explained.

“That’s another one of the challenges of playing this golf course. But I felt like we did a good job today of executing and putting ourselves in the right spots out there.”

Perhaps nobody has executed better this week than what Scheffler did on 15.

He pounded his drive right down the middle of the fairway and then stuck a 3-iron from 238 yards to about nine feet. Scheffler then rolled it in for an eagle to get back to 8-under, reinstilling his two-shot advantage that he briefly surrendered with bogies on the 11th and 13th holes.

“It was just a nice hold 3-iron. I felt like I had a good number, and it’s nice when I have a number where I want to cut it, and the pin’s on the right, and that was one of those instances,” Scheffler said of his approach into 15 .

Leave it to Scottie Scheffler to make an eagle look this easy. He leads by 2 @MemorialGolf . pic.twitter.com/UFrEqh2fEJ — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) June 7, 2024

“So I was able to hit a really nice shot in there pretty close to the pin and hole the putt.”

Scheffler entered the day trailing Adam Hadwin by a stroke at 5-under. But Hadwin went out and shot an even-par 72 in the morning, giving Scheffler an opportunity to take full control of the tournament. In fact, Hadwin had gotten his score up to 8-under, but a double-bogey at 17 brought him tumbling back down to six.

Scheffler never made as grave an error as that, even though he played sloppily between holes 10 and 13. He made an incredible par-save at the 10th, holing a 16-footer to do so. Then, on the par-5 11th, Scheffler knocked his third shot into the front bunker and failed to get up and down.

Two holes later, Scheffler had a horrible lie just off the fairway, which led to his second bogey in a three-hole span. But then he showed everyone why he is the best player in the world at 15, making it look easy.

He then went on to cap his round with a beautiful birdie on the 18th, despite putting his drive into the right fairway bunker. It marked the second straight day he birdied the final hole.

And yet, Scheffler refused to describe this game as ‘easy.’

“Easy is definitely not the right word. I feel like what I love about this game is how difficult it is. I love coming out here and competing against the best players in the world on the best golf courses, and this is obviously a pretty challenging track,” Scheffler explained.

“I really just love competing out here, and I don’t really think about whether or not it’s easy or hard, and some days I play good, and some days I don’t, but outside of that, I’m just out here trying to compete.”

Scheffler is now vying for his fifth victory of the season, which includes a win at Augusta National . He definitely loves competing against his fellow tour pros, but do his peers like competing against him?

Probably not.
