Major change for Aussies heading to Bali

Major change for Aussies heading to Bali

Australia’s favourite island getaway is officially back in business.

COVID restrictions are easing in Bali today and Jetstar is the first airline off the rank. More than 300 passengers are taking to the skies for the airline’s first flight to the island in two years.

It’s an important milestone for Jetstar and demand is already incredibly high. Jetstar ran a snap sale last week, offering one-way fares for as little as $99 from Adelaide, Cairns, and Perth, as part of its “Un-Bali-Vable” sale, and Australians were only too happy to start booking. Seats on the Boeing 787, which takes off from Melbourne (Tullamarine) at 9:55am, almost sold out.

“We are very excited to return to Bali today,” says Gareth Evans, Jetstar Group CEO. “We're confident that Bali will quickly regain its position as our most popular international tourist destination now that borders are open. Our recent Bali sale saw the biggest surge in bookings we’ve seen since 2016.”

Here’s everything you need to know about planning your return to paradise.

Jetstar is taking off for Bali today from Melbourne.

Where do Bali flights depart?

At this stage, Jetstar is only flying to Bali from Melbourne (Tullamarine).

However, it plans to ramp up services very soon. At this stage, flights departing from Sydney and Perth are scheduled to recommence in early April, while flights from Brisbane, Adelaide, Cairns, and Darwin are scheduled to resume in May. Definitely keep watching this space.

How often are flights scheduled?

Flights will depart three days a week: Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday.

How much do flights to Bali cost?

There’s a reason Jetstar is Australia’s favourite low-cost carrier, because the fares are second to none. In the latest sale, prices were $125 ex-Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne; $105 ex-Darwin, and $99 ex-Perth, Cairns, and Adelaide. Check out the website to see the latest prices.

What are the entry requirements in Bali?

It’s relatively easy for vaccinated Australians to enter Bali and get a visa on arrival.

You’ll need to bring your international COVID vaccination certificate (available through Medicare) and proof of a negative PCR test taken within 24 hours of your flight. You can register online and complete an express PCR at the Melbourne Airport Histopath in Terminal One for $79.

Once you have your results, you’ll also need to download the Peduli Lindungi App on Apple or Android and complete an electronic Health Alert Card (e-HAC) before you check-in. You’ll also need to complete an electronic Indonesian customs declaration before you land.

When you arrive, you’ll need to complete another PCR test and quarantine until you get the result. You’ll also need to complete another PCR test on day three, and then you’re free to roam around Bali or visit some of the other stunning islands in the Indonesian archipelago.

Bali has also made health insurance mandatory for international travellers.

Australia's favourite overseas destination is back.

What accommodation should I book in Bali?

You’ll need to stay at a certified hotel for at least three days after you arrive. You can find a full list of approved accommodation options here , or take our recommendation and treat yourself to three beautiful nights right on the beach at the The Westin Resort Nusa Dua . You’ll need to present proof of your reservation on arrival in Denpasar, so print this out.

What happens if I test positive while I’m in Bali?

Always get travel insurance. If you test positive during your trip and your symptoms are mild, you can isolate in a hotel. However, if your symptoms are severe, you may be required to isolate in hospital. Quarantine will be at your expense, managed by the local COVID taskforce.

What are the best sources of Bali travel information?

The default source for Australians is the federal government’s Smartraveller website. However, there’s also a lot of great information on the Welcome Back to Bali website.

What do I need to do to return to Australia?

Coming home is also super simple. You’ll need to get proof of a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours of departure and complete a Digital Passenger Declaration. Just download the Australia DPD app on Apple or Android and complete this online before catching your flight home.

What else should I know?

Just in case you want to learn a little Indonesian, selamat jalan means “happy travels”.

Many travellers rely on Google reviews when they're in unfamiliar territory. But there are some questions around its integrity. Case in point: this unassuming supermarket in Ubud, Bali.

Locals and tourists have slammed controversial works at a popular site as they claim it will negatively impact the area.

Aussies heading to Bali have been issued a new warning before boarding their flight, and will need to complete a new document before boarding.
