About W.A.S.P. [Text Wrapping Break]Few Bands in the history of Rock N’ Roll have ever incited the love, the hate, the raw emotional effect this Band has had on the world. From the very beginning, in the small venues of Los Angeles California, and later to the numerous countries worldwide that banned these Winged Assassins from performing live, the Band’s unique style of Shock and Rock caused Religious organizations, Local City Councils, Parliaments, and the Washington D.C. Senate to hold hearings in an effort to bar this group from selling records and trashing stages everywhere they played.

The band’s founding member, frontman Blackie Lawless, has led the group as its lead vocalist and primary songwriter since its beginning. His unique brand of visual, social and political comment took the group to worldwide heights and sold millions of records alongside a legacy of sold out shows across the globe for 4 decades.

Joined by bassist Mike Duda and guitarist Doug Blair, whose tenures in the band span 26 and 18 years respectively, along with drummer extraordinaire Aquiles Priester, will take the Band and the Fans back to where it all started. Complete with the stage show extravaganza that many fans never saw live.

Witness Live the Winged Assassins spectacle of “SHOCK and ROLL” as they take you Back…Back to the Beginning!

40 Years Live World Tour – European Leg – 2023 – Crazy Lixx – support act

Moriska Paviljongen Malmo, Sweden 24/4 – 2023

Live pictures and review: Anders Sandvall Review: Ulrika Henriksson

wasp european tour 2023

In 2022 WASP did some festival gigs in Europe as well as a tour in the USA where they hosted meet and greets. This year it was time for Blackie and company to head over to Europe and they played shows in England, Ireland, Spain and Germany before coming to Scandinavia. The band began by canceling and postponing shows in the Netherlands, Denmark and Sweden. The Scandinavian leg started in Tampere, Finland and the show we were supposed to see in Malmo, Sweden was postponed from April 11th to April 24th. I guess we were lucky enough to actually get a new date within the same month instead of experiencing a completely canceled show. The band had a hectic tour schedule in Sweden where they played many days in a row without a break. The tour was announced as the band taking it all back to the beginning with a stage show that, according to Lawless, contains both blood and fire. The tour is called 40th Anniversary of the Winged Assassins… back to the beginning. Well, let’s get back to what the show really contained later.

The band hasn’t released a studio album since 2015’s GOLGATHA, but in 2018 they released a new recording of THE CRIMSON IDOL titled REIDOLIZED: THE SOUNDTRACK TO THE CRIMSON IDOL. On parts of the tour WASP brought the Malmo based band Crazy Lixx with them and they were the support act that night in Malmo. Many of the shows were sold out and so was this night. The band played at the Moriska Paviljongen, which holds about 1000 people when sold out, which meant that there were quite a few fans who wanted to see WASP live in action. The show took place on a Monday night, which meant that it was probably going to be a pretty quiet crowd.

Since the show was sold out, we arrived at the venue about 40 minutes before the doors opened and there was already a line outside. It went fast and smooth to get our passes and well inside the support act had a table with merch that we took a look at. To the left in a bigger room WASP were selling some really expensive merch. T-shirts were sold for 50E, which is really expensive, and hoodies for 80E, signed drumskins cost 300E. Keep in mind that Kiss and Iron Maiden had cheaper merch and they are much bigger than WASP today. The Crazy Lixx merch was also sold for 50E, we can’t imagine they sold a lot of merch on the tour.

Well, inside the huge ballroom a lot of people already took the front positions at the stage and waited for the night to start. The Crazy Lixx gear was already set up on the stage and we could see a drumkit with two smaller backdrops on each side representing the band logo. The fog machine on the left side of the room started blowing smoke and sure it’s nice to have some smoke, but there was no place for the smoke to go out, so it soon got a bit cloudy inside the venue and it was hard to see your hand in front of you. Finally it was time for the support act to enter the stage and they started their show as scheduled at 8pm.

wasp european tour 2023

“Rise Above” was the first song to be played and the lead singer appeared as the intro was played. As the band is from Malmö, there were a lot of local fans as well as the band’s family and friends there to support them. The crowd gave the band a warm welcome and clapped their hands. Vocalist Rexon thanked the crowd and said it was nice to play in Malmö again. “Hell Raising Women” followed and all the members moved around the stage connecting with the fans. It was hard for everyone to move around because of the limited space, but they did their best to put on a show for the fans.

The band’s glam/sleaze metal music was full of energy and speed and it felt like the band was having fun being on stage. Even though we’re not a fan of the band’s music, we enjoyed the band’s energetic performance and they did a good job opening for WASP. The line up is:

Danny Rexon – lead vocals Joél Cirera – drums Jens Anderson – bass Chrisse Olsson – guitar Jens Lundgren – guitar

Many of the band’s songs sound a bit similar and it feels like it has been done before. That doesn’t take away from the fact that they are all really talented and skilled musicians who always give their all on stage. Both the sound system and the lights worked in the band’s favor, and if it wasn’t for the crazy amount of smoke in the venue, it would have been perfect. Rexon urged the fans to scream as loud as they could to prove to WASP that Malmö has the best fans.

wasp european tour 2023

“Silent Thunder” continued the show and the fans sang along with Rexon, it felt like this was the song many had been waiting to hear. After a short intro over the speakers, Rexon brought out a huge American looking flag and waved it throughout “Anthem For America”.

“Blame It On Love” followed and then it was time for the band’s biggest hit to end the show. with “21 Til I Die”. The song really lit up the fans and the singing was a fact. Rexon and the guys thanked the fans for their support and left the stage.

Crazy Lixx were given 30 minutes to warm up the crowd and they really took their job seriously. As we wrote earlier, the material left a bit to be desired, but the lack of great songs was made up for by the band’s explosive performance. It was fun to see the band put on such a solid show on their home turf and they really did a great job warming up the crowd. Had the band been given a little more time on stage, we think the temperature would have risen even higher and created even more frenzied fans.

As soon as Crazy Lixx finished their show, the crew and the band started preparing the stage for WASP. On each side of the stage as well as in the back huge pictures of old carnival cards were hung, which together with string lights made the backline look like a carnival set from the 50s. It took 4 men to get the Lawless mic stand Elvis on stage and it was fun to see the old metal mic stand up there again. The venue was now packed with eager fans waiting to see WASP in action and the general age of the majority of the fans made it clear that they had been listening to the bands since the beginning of WASP. The whole club started to fill with smoke and the closer it got to 9pm, the more the anticipation grew.

At least that was what everyone thought, that the show would start at 9. But boy were we wrong. The clock passed showtime by 5, 10 and then 15 minutes. And 20 minutes late we could finally hear The Doors song “The End” which marked the beginning of the show.

wasp european tour 2023

The intro music included parts of the bands old songs and as soon as the fans heard it, it was time for the show to start the screaming after WASP started. The smoke machine to the left went crazy and it was really hard to see anything but the smoke. A medley of “On Your Knees”, “The Flame”, “The Torture Never Stops” and “Inside The Electric Circus” started the show and because of the smoke and the constant blue light floating around the stage it was impossible to see Lawless behind the mic. In fact, it was hard to even get a glimpse of him during the entire show as the lights alternated between green, blue and red so we couldn’t even see his face even though we were standing pretty close to the stage. Lawless stood solidly behind his mike during the medley while Duda and Blair moved around on either side. WASP is:

Blackie Lawless – lead vocals, guitar Mike Duda – bass Doug Blair – guitar Aquiles Priester – drums

Lawless asked if Malmo was ready to meet his “L.O.V.E. Machine” and the fans all sang along the whole way. Crazy enough more smoke came out and we were worried that the fire alarm would go off because there was no place for the smoke to go out but no worries, Lawless continued the show by thanking the fans for waiting patiently for the band to come out. I’m so glad you never gave up on the band, he said, here’s “Wild Child”. And just like the previous song, the sing-a-long was a fact. Lawless felt uninspired on stage and didn’t do much to connect with the fans. The same was true for Duda, who didn’t throw his bass around like he used to. Blair stood at his side playing guitar and it seemed like the three of them were playing a separate gig, there wasn’t any connection within the band either.

wasp european tour 2023

Lawless said that the band was celebrating 40 years (a little strange with the thought that Lawless is the only remaining original member) and the album THE CRIMSON IDOL was celebrating 30 years (well, that was last year since it was released in 1992) and it was time for the band to play some songs from that album. First up was “The Idol” which set the fans on fire.

The sound system was totally off and the drums were too high in the mix and the vocals were too low. There wasn’t much bass either and the guitar was too high. It felt like the band hadn’t done a soundcheck to be honest. “The Great Misconception Of Me” followed immediately and as soon as it was time for Blair to solo, Lawless left the stage and disappeared.

When the tour started it was said that Lawless would take the fans back to when it all started with a stage show that not many were able to experience, well that wasn’t what we saw that night. The show wasn’t anything like when the band started and it lacked both blood and fire like it was said to be. When it was time for “Chainsaw Charlie (Murders In The New Morgue)” the lights turned red and more smoke came up. It wasn’t easy to get decent pictures of the band and this show was one of the hardest for Anders to photograph. Duda made the fans clap their hands and scream at his command, but that was about the only thing he did during the show. It seemed that none of the members liked being on stage and it felt like just another day at work.

The crowd erupted when “Blind In Texas” started and Lawless let the fans do the chorus for him. Duda did the Chris Holmes part – hey dude let’s party and when Lawless said I’m blind in the fans shouted back Texas and after that the song ended and Lawless said good night and everyone left the stage.

wasp european tour 2023

The original set lasted 60 minutes and of course the fans started screaming for encores right away. After a short while the PA system played a short version of the PMRC interrogation that took place in the 80’s when they accused WASP along with Twisted Sister and other bands of being a threat to teenagers with their music. When the members returned to the stage, it was time for the classic “Animal (Fuck Like A Beast),” which the band hasn’t played live in years due to Lawless’ current religious beliefs. The song lit every fuse in the fans and the sing-a-long was deafening. Every time it was time for the chorus, Lawless let the fans take care of it, so he didn’t have to sing the words that he might consider profane today?

Halfway through the song it changed into “The Real Me”, a cover originally made by The Who, and we wondered why the band couldn’t at least play the whole “Animal (Fuck Like A Beast)” if they finally decided to play it live. And why play a cover when the band has so many original songs to play. Just like God Lawless works in mysterious ways.

The fans loved it anyway and after the song was over Lawless said that the band started the tour 4-5 weeks ago and that he was thinking about how many dedicated fans the band has. I want to thank you all, he said, for being there and supporting us through the years. Before we leave you we want to say this “I Wanna Be Somebody” and this song, which included the usual long singing part in the middle, ended the 80 minute show. Before leaving the stage Lawless thanked the fans and said good night Malmö.

We don’t know where to start when it comes to reviewing such a mess of a show. Let’s start with the setlist, the band has been playing pretty much the same songs live for a couple of years now and it was said that they would focus on songs from the beginning of their career. For us that means songs from the first three albums. Well, that didn’t happen. The set list included the same songs we heard the last time they played in Malmö in 2015, as well as the same songs we heard when they played at Copenhell Festival in 2018. And why did they choose a cover song when they could have focused on performing “School Daze”, “Hellion”, “Ballcrusher”, “Jack Action”, “95 Nasty”, “The Headless Children”, “Mean Man” or “Forever Free”? those were just a few songs that came to mind.

wasp european tour 2023

And what about Lawless’ decision to use only green, red, and blue lights, along with all that smoke? It’s like he doesn’t want to be seen on stage. And if this is the case, why is he still touring?

Anders : The show felt tired and the members uninspired, except from time to time when Blair smiled and seemed to like what he was doing. As mentioned before, the band offered a meet and greet for 370E, which felt a little steep for “only” meeting Lawless, asking him questions, having two albums signed and taking a picture with him. This tour doesn’t feel like a nostalgia tour, it feels more like a cash-in-on-the-fans tour to be honest. I’ve seen the band live since the mid 80’s and wasn’t impressed at all.

I ( Ulrika ) have always been a fan of the band, but I think my days of seeing the band live are over. I was just too disappointed to see them not even trying to make a decent effort to connect with the fans. The last time I saw them live was at the Copenhell festival a few years ago and I was really disappointed to see Lawless spend the show standing with his back to the crowd for most of the show. I didn’t think it could get any worse than that, but I was wrong.

From now on I’ll stick to listening to the band’s albums, I won’t be going to any of their shows again. Sad but true.

Apparently Lawless has problems with his back and is in a lot of pain and that’s too bad for him. We respect that he has problems with his health but maybe this should be taken as a sign for him to slow down and end the tour. It’s better to leave the fans with a great vision of him and the band listening to the music that has stood the test of time. The day after Malmoe the band played two shows in Oslo, Norway, but the show three days later in Norrköping, Sweden was canceled without a replacement date. The future will tell if the band will continue with the announced second leg of the US tour.

Few bands in the history of rock n' roll have ever incited the love, the hate, the raw emotional effect this band has had on the world.

Witness live the Winged Assassins spectacle of "Shock And Roll" as they take you back… back to the beginning!

W.A.S.P reschedule 2022 European Headlining Tour to Spring 2023

WASP European Tour 2023 poster

Blackie Lawless commenting on rescheduling the 2022 European tour: “With enormous frustration I’m forced to announce W.A.S.P. must postpone the 2022 European leg of the 40th Anniversary World Tour. This hideous pandemic that’s striped people of their freedom and lives, that’s caused countless artist’s to cancel or postpone shows for years, once again has reared its vicious head to claim us… again! For years we’ve worked really hard to make this tour our celebration, for not only for the fans, but for all of us involved. I’m sad, mad, tired and pissed off, but I’ll quote from the great W.E. Henley’s poem Invictus, “My Head is Bloody, But Unbowed”. That’s what I want from all of you, to go beyond this place of pain and loss, and NEVER bow to this THING! Our U.S. dates will continue as planned – BUT – WE WILL see you all next year Europe!!!”

W.A.S.P. wrapped up its first U.S. tour in 10 years with a sold-out show on December 11 at The Wiltern in Los Angeles. This marked the 18th sold-out shows for the U.S. tour, which kicked off in late October. W.A.S.P. 's performances included the return of the band's classic song "Animal (Fuck Like a Beast)" , which hadn't been played live in over 15 years.

Looking back on the U.S. tour, Lawless said: "There have been a number of times in my life when I was caught between agony and ecstasy, many times while either making a record that had great meaning for me or a tour that was truly memorable. But the U.S. tour that we just finished has been a joy I've not felt since the first tour we did in '84-'85. When that first tour was over, I felt like a little kid that had his brand new toy taken away from him. When I got up on Elvis [ Blackie 's mic stand] at the end of the last show finale, I stayed up on him longer than I normally do. I held that pose for what seemed like forever, and in my mind, it was a blur and I was flashing in my head all the shows we had just done and how desperately I wished this tour would just keep going and going. I've never wanted something not to end so badly before… even more than the first world tour in '84-'85.

"I've been blessed with a good memory, and as I was on Elvis , I could see the faces of many of you that were at these shows. In a flash it flooded my head and I just wanted to stay up there.

"When we played the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, it had a profound effect on myself and the whole band. We knew we were standing on sacred ground. Where I was standing and singing was the exact spot where Loretta Lynn 's body had been lying at her funeral just a couple of weeks before. She was music royalty; she was true greatness…. the Coal Miner's Daughter. That was an emotional night for us and from that moment on for the rest of the tour, we all kept talking about how we absolutely did not want this tour to end. In these shows we got an awful lot of love from all you guy's and it was so heavy when we'd stand on stage it felt like we could cut it with a knife. Something truly special happened between all of you and us on this tour. More than I've ever felt before in my entire career.

"Additionally, I must take a couple of minutes to address the meet-and-greets. I had never done these before. Especially not where I could have a real dialog with those who were there. In the course of the 30-plus gatherings, I learned more about your true feelings than I've ever learned before. Someone might say I should have started doing them several years ago. If I did, I don't believe it would have had the same effect because the things I was hearing from you was an accumulation of years and years of you studying those lyrics and having the space to let them speak to you that only time can do. Time to let you really reflect on how it's spoken to your lives. The looks on your faces when you spoke was at times for me a frustration that is difficult to express, because mere words cannot paint the raw emotions I was feeling from many of you. And I'm supposed to be the writer here!"

Lawless has led W.A.S.P. as its lead vocalist and primary songwriter since its beginning. His unique brand of visual, social and political comment took the group to worldwide heights and sold millions of records alongside a legacy of sold-out shows across the globe for four decades. He is joined by bassist Mike Duda and guitarist Doug Blair , whose tenures in the band span 28 and 17 years respectively, along with drummer extraordinaire Aquiles Priester .

W.A.S.P. 's latest release was "ReIdolized (The Soundtrack To The Crimson Idol)" , which came out in February 2018. It was a new version of the band's classic 1992 album "The Crimson Idol" , which was re-recorded to accompany the movie of the same name to mark the 25th anniversary of the original LP's release. The re-recorded version also features four songs missing from the original album.

W.A.S.P. 's most recent studio album of all-new original material was 2015's "Golgotha" .

W.A.S.P. 's first live performance since December 2019 took place on July 23, 2022 at Skansen in Stockholm, Sweden.

W.A.S.P. is in the middle of its massive European leg of the 40th-anniversary world tour, with upcoming shows taking place in Spain, Belgium, The Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Germany and more before wrapping on May 18 in Sofia, Bulgaria at Universidada Sports Hall.

CANCELED: W.A.S.P. / Armored Saint "The 40th Never Stops" North American Tour Leg 2023

A statement from Blackie Lawless published July 21 on the W.A.S.P. website reads,

The extent of the trauma I endured on the 2023 European Tour was far greater than originally diagnosed and surgery will now be needed to correct the problem. In addition to the original herniated disc, as that tour continued, a 2nd disc became herniated. Upon returning home a 2nd MRI also revealed a broken vertebrae to my lower back. I've been fortunate to work with the best specialists in the U.S. and I've been in intensive rehab since we got home. It's going well but the damage was pretty extensive and all the Dr.'s agree moving the tour a few months back will be the safest thing. It's all been as the result of an injury that happened several years ago. I'm working my butt off to get ready and I'll be up riding on Elvis... bigger and badder than ever. If the Torture Never Stops, then the 40th Never Stops!
